1. Clear Safari Data

10 Ways to Fix Safari Not Working on an iPhone

Follow these simple troubleshooting steps to fix Safari if it isn’t working properly on your iPhone.

Safari is the native browser for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. It comes pre-installed on almost every Apple device, and it's designed to be fast and efficient for them. However, there are times when Safari doesn't work.

When this happens, it usually means there's a setting or software issue. There are even cases where you might not be able to access the internet at all on your iPhone or iPad. Luckily, there are a variety of things you can try to get Safari working again.

1. Restart Your Device

You hear it all the time—turn your device off and on again. While this may sound too simple to work, restarting your iPhone or iPad has been known to clear your usable memory, which can speed up Safari.

If Safari is frozen or just a blank white screen, restarting your iPhone or iPad can also fix these problems. Before you try anything else, just make sure you cover the basics.

2. Turn Off Safari Suggestions

3. Turn On Cellular Data for Safari

If you're frequently connected to Wi-Fi, you may have cellular data off for Safari to save internet data. While helpful, if your Wi-Fi isn't functioning right, connecting to cellular data could fix your issue.

To do this, head to Settings > Cellular > Safari and turn this on. If it was off, this was most likely the cause of your issue. Alternatively, you can turn off Wi-Fi if you're connected and just connect with cellular data. If you can connect this way, that means there's a network issue with your Wi-Fi network.

4. Edit Your Screen Time Settings

If you've ever changed your Screen Time settings or blocked certain websites through Screen Time, try turning these settings off. To block websites, you need to enable Content Restrictions which can inadvertently block websites you still want to use. If you can't load a link from an email or text message, this could also be a sign that content restrictions are on.

To fix this issue, head to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn this option off. If it was on, then this was most likely your issue. If it was off already, proceed to the next fix.

5. Clear All Safari's Data

If you frequently use Safari, you might have a lot of data stored within the app, making it fail to load correctly. This is especially true if you're using an iPhone or iPad with a lower storage capacity. If you get low storage notifications, this fix could resolve your issue.

To clear Safari's data, head to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data . This will erase all extra data in the Safari app. Some users report this works, but you'll need to do it often if you can't eliminate storage space elsewhere on your iPhone.

6. Update iOS to the Latest Version

Close Safari on iPhone X or later models – Go to the Home Screen, Swipe Up, and pause in the middle. Now, swipe up the Safari app preview to close it.

If you’re unable to access Safari on your iPhone, and you’re using a Wi-Fi network, just toggle the Wi-Fi switch to clear away any minor bugs that may be causing Wi-Fi issues on your device. If your iPhone can’t detect or connect to a Wi-Fi network, or your Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping, you may face issues with the Safari app. To fix these issues, toggle Wi-Fi on your iPhone.

Sometimes, the connection parameters get changed on the wireless access point or the Wi-Fi network information gets corrupted on your iPhone. This can cause Wi-Fi issues on your device, which in turn, could leave you with Safari not working on Wi-Fi. To deal with such situations, you must delete the network information to refresh your device’s Wi-Fi connection. This will re-establish the connection between your iPhone and the Wi-Fi network. Plus, it also clears away the saved information on your phone that might be causing trouble with the authentication.

Make sure to remember the Wi-Fi password as you would have to enter that again to re-establish the connection to your Wi-Fi network.

Disconnect the Wi-Fi router and other networking equipment from the power source for at least 15-20 seconds. 4. Use a different Wi-Fi network

If restarting the Wi-Fi router didn’t work for you, call your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to fix the internet problem. Just for the time being, you can connect to a different Wi-Fi network or use a Wi-Fi hotspot from your family member’s or friend’s smartphone and check if you’re able to access Safari or not.

1. Check if you’ve turned ON Cellular Data for Safari

If you’re using mobile data to access Safari on your iPhone, make sure that you’ve allowed Safari to access data on your device. There can be instances when you’ve mistakenly disabled mobile data for Safari. If you’ve done so, Safari will only work when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, and not on mobile data.

2. Toggle Mobile Data

When you toggle mobile data, it will wipe off any minor network errors on your iPhone. It has helped me fix Safari not working issues on my iPhone 11 quite a few times, therefore, make sure that you try this method as well.

Follow either of the methods to toggle Mobile data on your iPhone.

1. Swipe down from the top-right of your screen to access the Control Center . Now, tap the Mobile Data icon . Wait for 5-10 seconds, then tap the icon again.

2. Go to Settings > Mobile Data and turn the slider OFF for Mobile Data. Wait for 5-10 seconds, then turn the slider ON.

3. Check your data plan . 

It can be possible that Safari is not working on cellular data because you’ve run out of data. To be on the safer side, check your data plan on your mobile carrier’s official app or try to open WhatsApp, Instagram, or any other app on your iPhone. If

Instagram or WhatsApp is not working on your iPhone , there are high chances that you’ve run out of mobile data. In case you’re sure that you have sufficient data, it’s time to check for cellular network issues. 

4. Check for Network issues

Network or Data issues could be an underlying cause for Safari not opening or working issues on your iPhone. To double-check, you can ask your family member or a friend who’s on the same network, and verify if he/she can use Safari or not. If they are also facing the same issues, there could be some network issues. In such a case, you can either wait for some time and then check if the issue has been fixed or switch to a Wi-Fi network (if available).

5. Check if APN Settings are configured properly on your iPhone

APN (Access Point Network) defines the network path for all mobile-data connectivity. If you’ve checked everything and are still not able to use mobile data on your iPhone, then you must contact your service provider and verify if the APN settings are properly configured on your iPhone. It’s worth-knowing that the users who’re using an unlocked iPhone or a prepaid SIM card might need to adjust the APN settings for their SIM card. Here’s how to clear History and Website data on your iPhone:

1. Head to Settings > Safari

10. Reset RAM on your iPhone

Many users have reported Safari crashing issues on iOS 13 and Safari screen freezing at random on their iPhones. If you are also facing this, it’s time to reset the RAM on your iPhone. Moreover, if Safari keeps reloading pages, unable to load new pages on your iPhone, or works extremely slow, resetting RAM will help you fix such issues too. First, we need to enable Assistive Touch. For this, head to Settings> Accessibility > Touch > turn the slider On for Assistive Touch . Now, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Go to Settings > General
  • Scroll down and tap Shut down
  • You’ll see the slider to turn off the power along with the Cancel option.
  • Tap the Assistive Touch button.
  • Press and hold the Home button
  • Now, your iPhone will be locked and you’ll be asked to enter the passcode.

Reset RAM

      7. Enter the passcode to unlock your iPhone, and you’re done.

Here’s how to reset RAM on iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and earlier models:

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
  • Once you see the “Slide to power off” option on the screen. Release the Sleep/wake button
  • Now, press and hold the Home button.
  • After a few seconds, your iPhone will return to the Home Screen. You’ve cleared your iPhone’s RAM successfully.

Alternatively, you can also force restart your iPhone to free up RAM. It’s useful in situations where the display of your iPhone has frozen.

To Force Restart iPhone 8 or later models, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Press the volume up button.
  • Now, Press the volume down button.
  • Press and hold the sleep/wake button.
  • Keep holding until you see the Apple logo.

To Force Restart iPhone 7 and 7 Plus , press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Volume down buttons until you see the Apple logo.

To Force Restart iPhone 6s or earlier , hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button until you see the Apple logo.

That’s it. You’ve successfully reset RAM on your iPhone. Now, check if Safari is working properly on your iPhone or not.

11. Reset All Settings on your iPhone

If you’ve tried everything on the list and nothing has helped you fix Safari on your iPhone, you can resort to the last option of resetting all settings on your device. 

When you update iOS, it can automatically override your iPhone’s settings, and this could result in some conflicts with the apps present on your iPhone. Therefore, if you notice that you started facing Safari-related issues on your iPhone after a recent iOS update, resetting all settings can help you get rid of such problems. Once you reset all settings on your iPhone, your device will load up the default settings. It’s worth mentioning that this method will not delete any media or files on your iPhone, it will simply clear all the website details and login information. How to Fix Search Not Working on Apple Safari

1. Introduction

Searching the web is something we do every day. Whether you are searching from Safari's address bar, or have its homepage set to take you to your favorite search engine's website instead, you've likely gotten accustomed to the way you search on a daily basis. If that search experience has suddenly changed seemingly without warning, that's a clear sign that something is messing with Safari's settings without your knowledge or consent. This guide will help you make sure that Safari on your Mac is configured properly so that your search experience returns to normal once again.

Tools You'll Need:

  • A paperclip
  • iPhone charging cable
  • Access to a computer with iTunes installed
  • Any other non-consumable tools needed
  • Comment out tools section if no tools are necessary

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Any other consumable supplies
  • Comment out supplies section if no supplies are necessary

Before You Begin:

  • You must have access to a computer with iTunes installed.
  • You must have that thing for the other thing so you can do the thing.

2. Clear History and Saved Data

  • Open Safari.

3. Remove Problematic Extensions

Extensions provide extra features to Safari. Sometimes, these Extensions are not coded well, break after an update, or they change the way Safari works in a malicious way to show you advertisements.

Disabling or removing unneeded or unwanted Extensions can help resolve these problems.

Some pop-ups are created from extensions/add-ons installed on your browser. We will be going over steps to remove the extension.

  • From the Safari menu, choose Preferences .

  • The following steps can be repeated to remove multiple browser extensions.
  • Click the Extensions  tab. Click on Uninstall  for any extensions you want to remove.

  • You will get a confirmation window.  Click on Uninstall to confirm removal.

  • If a new tab opens up, you can close it by hitting the X .
  • Extensions are now gone, you may have to restart your browser for it to take effect. If you removed a malicious extension, it might have changed your homepage.

4. Remove Potentially Unwanted Programs

Potentially unwanted programs, or "PUPs", often arrive bundled with your computer or can tag along with another software program you meant to install. Most times, they are snuck into the EULA as a "Recommended Offer" that many of us are so accustomed to just click right through. Lots of these types of programs end up being junkware that your computer will not benefit from. Unfortunately, some of these programs can add unwanted browser toolbars or extensions that can clutter your browser, track your web browsing, show additional advertisements, or change your search page and other related settings. Usually, unless these types of programs are removed, they will continue causing issues with your web browsing experience.

Removing an app may also remove all data for that app. Make sure you have any information you need backed up before removing an app for your Mac.

  • Open the Launchpad from the dock.

Test your browser after removing any PUPs from your machine. This may require you to restart your browser or your computer beforehand depending on what was removed.

5. Verify Safari Homepage Settings

If your search experience hasn't returned to normal, the next step is to verify that Safari's homepage settings are where they should be in order to provide you with the search experience you're familiar with. If any settings were previously 'hijacked' by a malicious extension and were not reverted back to what they were originally set to, your search experience may still not be right.

Your web browser's homepage settings dictate the website that is loaded when it is opened up.

  • Open Safari .
  • From the (1)  Safari  menu, choose (2)  Preferences .

  • Click on the  General  (1) tab, then ensure that the  Homepage  (2) is set to the website you would like Safari to load when it is first opened.

6. Try Your Search Page Again

  • Test things out to see if your search experience has returned to normal.

Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data to clear Safari’s data. This will delete all unnecessary data from the Safari app. Some users claim this works, but you’ll have to do it frequently if you can’t free up storage space elsewhere on your iPhone.

Enable Cellular Data for Safari

Cellular data could be off for Safari on your device to save internet data, especially if you’re often connected to Wi-Fi. So while Wi-Fi is very useful, if it isn’t working properly, connecting to cellular data may help fix Safari not working on an iPhone.

To do so, go to Settings > Cellular > Safari and enable it. If cellular data was off, this was most likely the source of your problem. Alternatively, you can disable Wi-Fi and only connect via cellular data. If this works to fix Safari not working on an iPhone, it indicates that there is a problem with your Wi-Fi network.

Update iOS to the Most Recent Version

Updating iOS may also help fix Safari not working on an iPhone if Safari isn’t loading, or if it’s crashing or simply not connecting to websites on your device.

With iOS updates, Apple does an excellent job of addressing widespread issues. So, if Apple is aware of an issue, it may be addressed in a subsequent update.

Reset Your Network Settings

If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac

If Safari doesn't load a webpage, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or otherwise doesn't work as expected, these solutions might help.

These solutions are for issues that can affect Safari on Mac, including issues such as these:

A webpage is blank, doesn't load all of its content, or otherwise doesn't work as expected.

You can't sign in to a webpage, despite using the correct sign-in information.

A webpage asks you to remove or reset cookies.

Safari slows down, stops responding, or quits unexpectedly.

Reload the page

From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload Page. Or press Command-R.

If Safari doesn't reload the page, quit Safari, then try again. If Safari doesn't quit, you can press Option-Command-Esc to force Safari to quit .

Install software updates and restart

If that works, use the following steps to remove the website's data, including its caches and cookies. The website can then create new data as needed. If it's a website that you sign in to, make sure that you know your sign-in information before continuing.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Privacy.

Click Manage Website Data.

Select the affected website from the list shown.

Click Remove.

Click Done.

Open the website again in a non-private browser window.

Check Safari settings

The webpage might not be compatible with one or more browser settings, which you can turn on or off as needed. From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences). Then click Websites, Privacy, or Security to access these settings:

Privacy settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you allow cross-site tracking, show your IP address, or allow cookies.

Security settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you enable JavaScript.

Check VPN or other security software

Check network settings

Certain network settings, such as custom proxy settings or custom DNS settings , can affect access to content on the internet. Even if you haven't changed these or other network settings yourself, you might have installed software that changed them for you.

To find out whether the issue is with the network settings on your Mac, try viewing the page from a different web browser or different device on the same network. Or reset your network settings by setting up a new network location on your Mac.

If the issue affects other devices and web browsers on the same network, the issue is probably with the website, and you should contact the website developer for help.

The Little Known Safari Feature Even Google Chrome Can't Do On iPhone

W ith every new version of iOS comes a slew of useful upgrades that could change the way you do certain tasks on your iPhone. Most of these updates improve upon the functionality of Apple's slate of built-in apps. In the case of Safari, thanks to the latest version of iOS 17, iPhone's mobile browser now lets you create multiple profiles to keep work-related searches separate from your personal ones. It's also more responsive and does a better job of providing more applicable suggestions that match your original query.

Of the many useful and game-changing Safari features you can take advantage of on your iPhone, one was actually first introduced with iOS 15: the ability to create tab groups. On a computer, this feature is incredibly essential for those who use web browsers regularly and need to organize and consolidate the many pages they have open. Not many mobile browsers offer this functionality. Based on testing, tabs can't be added to groups through Google Chrome on iOS.

If you own an iPhone and happen to have a different default web browser assigned, find out why it may be worth reverting to Safari and make using tab groups one of your mobile browsing habits.

How Tab Groups Work In Safari On iPhone

If you're the sort of person who likes to click on links and read them on Safari, a "tab group" is essentially a feature that lets you compile several webpages currently open on your mobile browser app into collections. Although you can technically add any page to any tab group, the function is more useful as a method for organizing all the links you have yet to read into similar, smaller, more manageable sets and allows you to find the page you need more easily. For instance, you can add recipe pages to a Food tab group, news articles to a Current Events tab group, and Reddit threads to a Random Learning tab group. You get the idea.

To add an open Safari web page to a new tab group using your iPhone:

  • Launch the Safari app.
  • Tap the Tabs view switcher. It's the two-square icon in the bottom navigation bar.
  • Long-press on one of the page tiles you'd like to add to a tab group.
  • Select Move to Tab Group.
  • Tap New Tab Group.
  • Type in your desired name and hit Move.

Once you have several tab groups in place, you can easily switch between them by tapping the Tabs icon and swiping left or right on the tab group name carousel at the bottom of the screen. You can also hit the List icon between "+" and Done to see all the tab groups you created in one go.

Other Things You Can Do To Safari Tab Groups On An iPhone

To rename a tab group, tap the Tabs icon and then hit the List icon between "+" and Done at the bottom of the screen. Then follow these steps:

  • Tap the three-dot icon next to the tab group name you want to update.
  • Select Rename.
  • Enter a new name.

If you'd like to finetune the theme of your tab groups so that collated pages are more relevant to each other in terms of content, you can opt to move a tab from one group to another:

  • Open the tab you'd like to relocate on Safari.
  • Long-press on the Tabs icon.
  • Pick a group you've already created, or create a new one entirely.

You can also improve organization within tab groups by reordering them according to your preferences: 

  • Tap the Tabs icon.
  • Swipe on the tab group names at the bottom of the screen till you get to the one you want to rearrange. 
  • Long-press on any tab in the group and drag it to your preferred spot. 
  • Alternatively, you can long-press on any tab in the group, select Arrange Tabs By from the menu, and pick one of the sorting options.

Finally, you can pin an open tab to prioritize it from other links in the collection:

  • Select the tab group you want from the bottom navigation bar.
  • Long-press on the tab you want to pin.
  • Select Pin Tab from the menu.

This will minimize the tab to a smaller size, but it will always stay at the top of the tab group it belongs to, so it's the first thing you see when you view the collection.

Meeting SDK Web doesn't auto-join audio successfully on iPhone

Meeting SDK Type and Version Web 3.6.1

Description We have the Zoom Meeting SDK for Web integrated into our web application for webinars. When a user tries to join a webinar on an iPhone the auto-join of audio is not working correctly. The user has to disconnect and then reconnect audio to get it working, which is not an obvious set of steps.

I can reproduce the issue on the following configurations: iPhone 15, iOS 17, Safari only (Chrome works) iPhone 14, iOS 16, Chrome & Safari

Error? FYI I can’t see any associated error message in the browser console.

Safari search enginge suggestions not working on iPhone after changing to iOS8

I recently changed my iPhone 5 to iOS 8. Since then, the search engine suggestions in my Safari search bar no longer work. The function is turned on in my settings. However, it doesn´t work with any of the search engines available. I this is a iOS8 bug? I can´t really find anything about it online though so I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.

I had the same problem on my iPhone 5s after upgrading to iOS 8. To troubleshoot I did a restore to iOS 8 without restoring my backup and search suggestions worked. I then cleared all settings and restored my last backup and again on iOS 8 the search suggestions were not working.

It was then that I realized what the problem was. I was in a Private browsing session. Just close all your open Safari tabs (windows) and then click the new Tab option. If Private has a white box around it then you are in a private session. Just tap on private to remove the box and return to a regular session and search suggestions hopefully will start working for you.
