Journey Down the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail: It’s More Than Just Gorillas!

by Ilana Robinson | Sep 27, 2021 | Animal Kingdom , WDW Blog

Have you seen the sign for the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at the exit of the Kilimanjaro Safaris and wondered whether it was worth the 15 minutes to explore the trail? My take: Absolutely.

In fact, there are several reasons I recommend taking the time to enjoy the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail experience on your next Disney visit.

[metaslider id=”50088″]

Not Everything Has to Be Go-Go-Go

I think we all feel the urge to pack as much into our Disney trip as possible to raise the return on investment on our, let’s face it, super expensive vacation .

It’s important to take it easy on your Disney World vacation, sometimes. Photo by Mike Billick

But what about slowing down and contributing to the stockpile of simpler memories?

Sometimes, there is just so much sensory stimulation going on with the ride experiences that our young kids (or even us, uh, not-so-young folks) can get overloaded. That’s why it’s important to take a breather in between rides and enjoy the beautiful scenery, educational opportunities, and animal observatories that the trail has to offer .

There is a lot to discover, on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, and if you allow the time to do so, you won’t regret it. Plus, it’s only 15 minutes of your park day.

3 Tips for Tackling Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Here are three tips to enhance your experience on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail:

1. Always Look Up and Down

Disney is notorious for its impeccable theming . Some of the best decor at Disney isn’t found at eye level.

Spot these animal tracks on the ground of Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Photo by Ilana Robinson

On the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, you can find animal tracks along the trail floor , as well as beautiful displays of artwork on the ceilings of buildings you walk in and out of as you meander down the pathway.

2. Ask Questions

Cast Members are scattered about numerous locations throughout the trail, in addition to the Wilderness Explorer stations. You can learn so much, and feel more connected to the animals and habitats , just by asking simple questions.

The CMs love to answer questions. Photo by Ilana Robinson

Trust me, the Cast Members love to tell you about the animals.

3. Read the Fine Print

The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is more than just looking at animals. In fact, if you actually read about the exhibits , it might feel like information overload.

There’s so much good stuff to read on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Photo by Ilana Robinson

But it’s worth it.

Slow down and take the time to read the posters containing information about the animals you see, and learn something new!  Show your kids that educational experiences can be fun too.

You Can Plan When to Be at the Right Place at the Right Time

Wait around for that magical moment. Photo by Laurie Sapp

As always, timing is key . While randomly catching fun animal moments can be exciting, it may be easier to control your luck via the observation points on the trail .

When you’re riding the safari, it’s sometimes a hit-or-miss experience because the trucks cannot stay stationary for too long. That issue doesn’t exist on the trails.

If you want to observe the animals for longer, you can just stay . I have seen a meerkat protecting its lair (actually quite cute), monkeys climbing bridges, birds feeding and building nests, hippos doing donut spins in the water, and a baby gorilla wrestling with her mom (quite possibly the cutest sight ever) —all because I waited around for the right moment.

While there isn’t a perfect time to visit, it does help to have a bit of insider information on the trail .

When to Visit Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

First, the trail closes at 6:30 PM currently, but typically about 1 hour before dusk .

Take note of opening and closing times. Photo by Ilana Robinson

Second, the gorillas are most active between 9 and 11 AM .

All of the gorillas go inside for the day at around 4:30-5:00 PM because baby gorilla Ada (10 weeks) needs indoor bonding time with her family. This will likely change as she gets older, but future baby gorilla will likely cause the same disappearance.

Third, if you head to the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at park open or park close, there will be significantly less foot traffic , and you may actually have the entire trail to yourself

Not Just Gorillas

You’ll spot other primates on the trail. Photo by Cliff Wang

Yes, the attraction is named the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, but it houses many different animals , not just the gorillas.

You can find monkeys, a bird atrium (complete with a screened in area so they can fly freely), fish, meerkats, hippos, giraffes, zebras, and more.

Stop in to see the birds. Photo by Ilana Robinson

Plus, t he path itself is beautiful and offers many spots that are the perfect backdrop for photographs—whether selfies or a family photograph. And on those sunny days, it’s a nice shady escape (though air conditioning may be the better option).

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail: A Must-Do

The next time you go for a Safari ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, don’t just turn right and make your way toward Everest or Pandora. Instead, turn left and head down the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail for a bit more laid-back fun.

Trust me, you’ll love it.

How to Experience Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Since Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is a self-guided experience, guests won’t find a Standby Line here, nor any Lightning Lanes or Single Rider Lines .

Instead, there’s typically no wait to experience the trail, and you can come and go as you please, spending as much time as you’d like observing the animals here.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Like with most other attractions at Disney World, you may find that this trail is at its busiest in the afternoon, when the park is usually at its most crowded.

For a quieter experience, you might want to visit in the morning or at the end of the day, but since the trail usually opens later and closes earlier than the rest of the park, be sure to check the hours in the My Disney Experience app while planning your visit.

Do I Need To Use Genie+ at Gorilla Fails Exploration Trail?

Genie+ isn’t offered at this attraction, but you wouldn’t have needed to use it in order to be able to explore at your own pace. You should expect to walk in without a wait, no matter what time of the day it is when you visit.

Colobus Monkeys gorilla falls exploration trail

Plenty of attractions at Animal Kingdom do offer this service, though, so be sure to check out our touring strategies for Animal Kingdom for more Genie+ advice.

What to Expect When You Visit

There is no queue here, and that’s a good thing — it means that it never gets busy enough to need one! You should be able to walk right in and start exploring when you arrive. Remember that this is an entirely outdoor attraction, with only a few covered areas along the way.

Accessibility Information

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is fully accessible, so guests using ECVs and wheelchairs will be able to stay in them while experiencing this attraction. Audio description is also available for guests with hearing disabilities.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail Accessibility Information

During the Experience

After you pass under the sign for the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail — which is themed as a conservation school and animal sanctuary on the Harambe Wildlife Reserve — you’ll set down a sprawling trail that offers plenty of shade from the lush greenery that surrounds you.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

You’ll follow the trail around through different areas and habitats, enjoying elements like waterfalls and bridges along the way. Plenty of Cast Members are on hand and are happy to answer any questions you might have about the animals.

zebras meerkats gorilla falls exploration trail

There are a ton of animals on the trail to see, including:

  • Western Lowland Gorilla
  • Hippopotamus
  • Ball python
  • Black and white colobus monkeys

Fish and plenty of different birds are found here, too; there’s an entire aviary to explore.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

How much time you spend here is totally up to you — if you’re pressed for time, you can probably manage to see everything in about 20 minutes, but if you’d rather walk at a leisurely pace and really take in all the exhibits, you could easily spend an hour or more.

Is Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail Kid-Friendly?

This trail is one of the most kid-friendly experiences in Animal Kingdom. Not only do they have plenty of space to explore, but children of all ages who love animals will truly be in their element here.

meerkat gorilla falls exploration trail

And if you’re not visiting strictly for the animals, this is a great place to take a walk and keep kids occupied while waiting for a Lightning Lane at Kilmanjaro Safaris or a dining reservation in the park.

Unless there are particular animals who frighten your child, there’s nothing scary here that should freak little ones out. While planning your trip, don’t forget to check out our guide to things that might scare kids at Disney World .

Since this is a completely accessible trail, strollers are allowed on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, making this the perfect place to enjoy while your little one is napping (or when they’re too tired to walk… been there!).

The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail opened with the rest of the park when Animal Kingdom debuted on April 22, 1998. Just a few months later, the trail was renamed Pagani Forest Exploration Trail, but would revert back to its original name in 2016.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

The storyline behind the attraction is that you’re visiting a conservation school headed up by Dr. Kulunda, and the Cast Members you encounter are actually research students who are studying there. That must be why they always have the answers to all your animal questions!

While the animals here may change, over the years, this attraction has remained basically the same, aside from the brief name change.

Other Fun Details

  • The trail spans five acres, giving you a few extra steps to add to your count for the day (as if you needed that at Disney World).
  • Some of the animals you see on this trail are the same that you’ll see while on Kilimanjaro Safaris, including the hippos.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail Fun Facts

Did you know.

  • Find Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail situated at the exit to Kilimanjaro Safaris.
  • After debuting with its current name, Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, on the Animal Kingdom’s opening day, April 22, 1998, the exploration trail was termed “Pangani Forest Exploration Trail” from August 1998 to May 2016.
  • Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail features a backstory that has the trail situated within the “Pangani Forest Conservation School and Wildlife Sanctuary.” This fictitious venture between the residents of Harambe and international animal preservation groups is overseen by a Dr. Kulunda and research students, the latter actually well-informed Disney Cast Members , who will answer any questions you may entertain about the animals. “Pangani” means “place of enchantment” in Swahili.
  • Guests encounter many animals along this trail. Guests interested in birds should make sure to stop by the aviary on this trail to experience many feathered friends. Meerkats (the species of Timon from Disney’s 1994 film The Lion King ) are also very visible from this location. Of course, many gorillas reside here. Silence is required on the gorilla portion of the trail because these creatures deem loud noises a threat.
  • A similar trail with Asian animals, Maharajah Jungle Trek , is located in the Animal Kingdom’s Asia section.

The Wilderness Must Be Explored!

  • Guests participating in the Animal Kingdom’s free interactive game, Wilderness Explorers , can earn five of 31 possible badges (stickers) on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Guests can register for the game, which is based on Disney and Pixar’s Up (2009), at a kiosk on the bridge between the Oasis and Discovery Island near the front of the Animal Kingdom.
  • Earn the Ham Radio Badge by listening to a radio and recording requested information into the Wilderness Explorers Handbook.
  • Earn the Hiking Badge by recording requested information along the trail into the Wilderness Explorers Handbook.
  • Earn the Birding Badge by viewing the birds in the trail’s aviary.
  • Earn the Tracking Badge by identifying animal tracks, such as footprints and scratch marks.
  • Earn the Gorilla Badge by walking the trail and imitating a gorilla’s behavior to a Cast Member.

A Visit to Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is a walk-through attraction located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. This experience is located in the Africa section of the park and offers guests the opportunity to see gorillas in a unique habitat.

In this review, we’ll take a detailed look at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. We’ll cover the exhibits you can expect to find on the trail and the best time to tour this area.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is unique, unlike anywhere I’ve ever visited. Anyone who enjoys animal habitats will be blown away by this peaceful attraction that can be experienced at your leisure.

Gorillas tend to be beautiful creatures known to provoke many different emotions and curiosity. This trail allows for a unique observation window into the life of these land mammals.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is tucked neatly next to Kilimanjaro Safaris in the Africa section outside Harambe. As the current name of the trail states, you can expect to see gorillas and waterfalls.

I mention the current name because it was formerly known as the Pangani Forest Trail. The gorilla part was added a few years back to attract more guests.

However, in addition to the gorillas, this trail offers many more animal encounters and learning opportunities. Before we look at those, here’s a quick reference for the trail.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail Review

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is self-paced. Therefore, you can walk through as fast or as slow as you would like.

On average, it will take a minimum of 30 minutes to experience the trail if you take the time to view each animal encounter.

Additionally, the trail closes earlier than the rest of the park. On most days, depending on the season, you can expect a 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. close.

Gorilla Falls is home to the following animal encounters:

  • Hippopotamus
  • Grevy’s Zebra
  • Bird Sanctuary
  • Colobus Monkeys

Colobus Monkey’s on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

One of the first things you’ll encounter on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is the Angolan Black and White Colobus Monkey.

Animals on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Colobus Monkeys are from Angola, the Congo, Tanzania, and Kenya. There are several signs with facts about the species. Often, a cast member is in the area to answer any questions you might have.

gorilla trek disney world

Here is a look at their habitat. These guys can be pretty active during the day. I enjoy catching them out during their feeding time.

Make sure to stop if they are out and about. The Colobus are incredibly entertaining.

gorilla trek disney world

If you enjoy monkeys, the Maharajah Jungle Trek offers the opportunity to see Lion Tail Macaque monkeys. Additionally, there is a considerable Gibbons monkey encounter in the heart of Asia at the Animal Kingdom. The Gibbons are located near the entrance to Kali River Rapids .

As we move along down Gorilla Falls, you’ll encounter a termite mound like the ones they point out on Kilimanjaro Safaris. Below is a look at the dissected mound.

I’m sure anyone with any real estate experience knows what havoc and expense these tiny pests can cause.

gorilla trek disney world

Okapis on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Next, there’s an Okapi viewing area. This area will be on your left-hand side after passing the termite mound.

gorilla trek disney world

Okapis, at first glance, appear to belong to the zebra family due to their striped legs. However, they are part of the giraffe family.

Bird Sanctuary at Gorilla Falls

Moving on, you will enter an enclosed area that becomes part of a bird sanctuary. For reference, the bird sanctuary here is entirely different from the one at the tiger trail.

This viewing area offers a beautiful waterfall. Thousands of bright blue and yellow fish fill the stream below.

gorilla trek disney world

Look close all around, and you’ll find many interesting birds.

Exotic Birds on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

However, you’ll want to look quickly. Some of these birds appear as though they are posing for a picture. In reality, many of these birds are constantly moving and challenging to photograph.

Here’s that pool of fish.

These birds below like to pop in and out of their nests.

Hippopotamus Viewing Area on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

After exiting the bird sanctuary, the trail continues through a building that looks into an underwater hippo exhibit. This area can be pretty crowded at times.

Unfortunately, sometimes the water is cloudy. But if the hippo comes up to the window for a swim, you’re in for a treat.

gorilla trek disney world

You might also be able to see it out in the distance if it’s not swimming.

gorilla trek disney world

Grevy’s Zebra and Meerkat on Gorilla Falls

Moving on, you’ll come to this covered area with a view of the savanna, where you might run into a Grevy zebra.

gorilla trek disney world

Closer in, there’s an opportunity to see the Meerkat family. They are adorable.

gorilla trek disney world

One brave meerkat takes on the lookout role to protect the rest of the group. This one above looks to the sky for predators that might attack his little family while the rest are busy at work in the picture below.

gorilla trek disney world

For those participating in the Wilderness Explorer’s activity , there’s an opportunity to pick up a badge in this area. This is a fun way for children to get involved.

Additionally, it’s a pleasant educational experience. As you can probably tell, there are quite a few things to do on the trail.

Gorillas on Gorilla Falls Trail

Finally, we’ve made it to the first gorilla viewing area on the trail. Unfortunately, this portion of the trail can get pretty congested depending on how many gorillas are out at any given time.

Below we see a few gorillas who appear to be a little lazy.

gorilla trek disney world

Several baby gorillas have been born here in recent years. Below we have Grace cradled by her mom while her brother sits close. Baby Grace is several years old now. She is quite a bit larger than what’s shown in the picture below.

gorilla trek disney world

As you move past the glass enclosure, you’ll cross a suspension bridge. This area looks out into the gorilla habitat on both sides. A ravine sits between you and the enclosure.

gorilla trek disney world

To the left side, you’ll usually see some of the silver-back male gorillas hanging out. It’s a vast area, so it might take a few moments to locate the gorillas. Most of the time, there’s a cast member pointing them out.

This portion of the trail is scenic, and even though I have mixed feelings about animals living in captivity, I don’t get that feeling here. I’m sure that’s a controversial opinion.

However, I’m thankful they have a large gorilla family with a massive habitat providing plenty of space for them to roam.

There is also a good bit of information on the trail about gorillas. This one below states that the stream beyond the fence marks a rough boundary between the home range of a family troop of Lowland Gorillas and territory used by a “bachelor” or all-male group.

gorilla trek disney world

Here’s one of those bachelors belowy playing the role quite well. Maybe there’s a hidden built-in TV screen above him?

gorilla trek disney world

Or he could just be wondering when that cute blogger is coming back to photograph him? Completely unaware that I’m already there. Or maybe he knows I’m there, and this is his latest stance.

Whatever the case, make sure to look closely. There might be more than meets the eye, like this hidden gorilla in the picture below. Seeing see him lean in for the picture was a complete delight when I had no idea he was even there in the first place.

gorilla trek disney world

In fact, this is my favorite picture I’ve ever taken at Walt Disney World. There’s a considerable amount of emotion behind this one.

As you wind yourself around to the end of the trail, you’ll encounter a tropical-like setting.

gorilla trek disney world

And a little Bougainvillea to round things out.

gorilla trek disney world

There’s one last waterfall and viewing area as you exit the trail and head to your left. Unfortunately, it is probably missed because most guests tend to exit toward the right and don’t realize there’s another opportunity to see the gorillas.

gorilla trek disney world

Final Thoughts on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is an attraction you should add to your list of things to do at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. While the park covers a lot of ground, a day spent truly exploring the Animal Kingdom can enhance your life in a way that some of the other parks can’t.

Not only that, but conservation efforts have become an integral part of today’s world and help protect species from going extinct. Here at Gorilla Falls, we can all learn a lot about how to help further the safety of our wildlife. I hope you will take the opportunity to walk the trail on your next visit.

The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is lush, beautiful, and filled with interesting educational exhibits explaining the flora and fauna on display.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

An Attraction in Animal Kingdom

Last updated: May 3, 2024

At a Glance

As the trail winds between the domain of two troops of lowland gorillas, it’s hard to see what, if anything, separates you from the primates. Also on the trail is a hippo pool with an underwater viewing area, plus a naked-mole-rat exhibit. A highlight is an exotic-bird aviary so craftily designed that you can barely tell you’re in an enclosure.

INTRODUCTION

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is a self-guided walking tour that takes you into a lush, tropical forest found in the heart of Africa where you can explore a variety of old and new animal friends.

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is located near the exit of Kilimanjaro Safaris.

gorilla trek disney world

As you enter the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail , look to the right. The first animal exhibit is that of the Black and White Colobus Monkeys. Their diet consists of leaves, buds, seeds and fruit and in the wild (Kenya) are found mostly in trees. They are hunted for their fur, but today, their existence is more threatened by the destruction of forests. Unlike other monkeys, Colobus monkeys have no thumb.

gorilla trek disney world

Shortly up ahead, you may find Okapi!

The Okapi , Okapia johnstoni , is the only known living relative of the giraffe. They are dark chestnut brown with distinctive stripes on their legs, similar to Zebras. The most giraffe-like feature of the okapi is their very long black tongue. The Okapi have always been rare and is very shy. They are native to the tropical forests of northeastern Zaire.

As you leave the first observation post, your path takes you into a research building. The research building has a few small exhibits, including reptiles and amphibians, but the highlight of your visit will be the Naked Mole Rats .

gorilla trek disney world

Soon the sound of birds fill your ears as you enter the aviary area. Carmine bee-eaters , red-bearded barbets , Brimstone canaries and other rare African birds can be found here. Don’t spend all your time looking up — you’ll find birds on ground level too!

Hippos! Leaving the aviary through a screen door, you pass into another open air shelter with a dam on the far wall with a large panel of inch-thick glass, holding the pond. The pool is home to a trio of giant hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius).

gorilla trek disney world

This is a great underwater viewing area. The Hippo is a river dwelling mammal from tropical Africa and is related to the pig. Males are approximately 5 feet tall and can weigh five TONS! The hippos will spend most of their time in the water but can relax on nearby boulders, particularly in cooler weather.

Back on the trail you will come to a thatched roof structure and a large Savannah overlook into the grasslands.  Meerkats reside here and are really fun to watch.  Meerkats are found in Southern Africa and the Kalahari Desert. They are 12 inches tall and have tails that can grow 8 inches long. They are very territorial and can often be found standing erect, guarding their space. Meerkats have an interesting diet which includes scorpions (they are immune to their venom) beetles, spiders, centipedes, worms, crickets, small mammals, small reptiles, birds, eggs, and roots.

gorilla trek disney world

Following the leafy trail is the Gorilla Research Camp . As you enter, you’ll find everyone pressed up against the glass viewing the gorilla family. Animal Kingdom is home to several adolescent and young gorillas.

gorilla trek disney world

Exit this area to come to an open air viewing area of the gorillas. Here you may spot the males! Stand on the swaying suspension bridge for a wonderful view of the more gorillas.

Trail walkers catch a final glimpse of the gorillas through a “bamboo” fence before heading to the end of Pangani Forest Exploration Trail near the Harambe station of the Wildlife Express trains.

TRAIL LOGISTICS

This is a self guided tour so you can move as fast or slow as you’d like. To really see everything on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, give yourself about 20-30 minutes. It is a natural flow along the path as you exit the Kilimanjaro Safaris

Accessibility:  Guests may remain in wheelchair/ECV.  Audio description is available.  Due to the nature of the experience, guests with service animals should check with a Cast Member at the attraction for boarding information.

Be sure to ask the Guides any questions you might have about the animals you encounter during your trek.

There are plenty of viewing areas for kids and lots of educational opportunities too.

gorilla trek disney world

Make sure to show respect for the animals by not tapping or banging on the glass or screaming.

There is usually a small cart near the exit of the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail that has plushes of various animals seen on the trail or Kilimanjaro Safaris, as well as a few other animal souveniers.

INTERESTING FACTS

The hippos are actually the same ones you will sometimes see on the Kilimanjaro Safari ride in the savannah. The hippo barn resides in between  Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail and the savannah river.

June 2016, the name has reverted back to Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. When Animal Kingdom opened in April 1998, this trail was named Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail — it was renamed a few months later.
