The Shaw Centre was abuzz Saturday as the 27th annual Travel and Vacation Show made its return to Ottawa.

More than 150 exhibitor booths from travel agencies and embassies were set up and ready to give the public a snapshot of sunny destinations from around the world.

"I think the general public is tired of trying to plan these trips on the internet rather than just talk to people from various countries and people that are actually doing the tours," said general manager Robert Player on Saturday.

"This way, they get a much better idea of where they would like to go."

Player says the show is expecting around 17,000 visitors over the weekend. To him, it signifies the travel industry is healing from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It’s improving after being down for three years," he said. "There was very, very little happening, but last year was a pretty good year here and this year is even better."

Walking the show floor were Vera Yuzyk and Terri Tomchyshyn, two friends who were brainstorming some upcoming trips.

"There's some really interesting brochures and places that I haven't been to, so it's a great opportunity to learn about other countries," said Yuzyk.

Tomchyshyn, having recently retired, said she wants to start expanding her travel experience.

"As much as I love living here, it's time to go see the world," she said. "This looks like a good opportunity to see who's got what available for us and to have a good time doing it."

Cuban music filled the air near the Caribbean booths as performers serenaded passersby. Some exhibitors were handing out samples of food traditional to each country.

"There are many different countries - unexpected places I've never heard of before," said Jean Roberth Souza. "It's a chance to see the world in one single place."

Others were planning trips closer to home. Terry O’Keefe is looking forward to a summer trip to Newfoundland with his wife.

"It's the only province we haven't been to yet and so we've got to take that off our list," he said. "It just looks like such a magical place."

The show provided him a chance to speak one-on-one with locals at the extensive Newfoundland display.

"There was so many people there to answer questions - that was really helpful."

The show continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shaw Centre. Tickets cost $10 at the door.

IMEX-Frankfurt

Yesterday, on the eve of the grand opening of IMEX Frankfurt 2024, event professionals from across the globe converged for specialized education sessions designed to reshape the future of corporate and association events. Held at the prestigious Melia Frankfurt City and Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel, these sessions provided a unique platform for learning and exchange ahead of the main expo.

Exclusively Corporate: Addressing Challenges and Creative Solutions

At the Melia Frankfurt City, corporate event planners from over 25 countries gathered under the banner of Exclusively Corporate. This session offered them a rare opportunity to network and share insights across industries, each bringing their unique perspectives shaped by diverse professional backgrounds in marketing, tourism, and human resources. Sonia Cuchillo from the European Central Bank highlighted the session’s relevance, noting the high expectations of clients that demand new, creative solutions within strict budgets and resource limits.

A key discussion point was the prevalent issue of planner burnout. Mike Ford, founder of Grateful Lemon, led a session on managing stress and promoting recovery. “Understanding how to balance stress with adequate recovery is crucial for maintaining professional performance,” Ford explained, emphasizing the importance of physical, mental, and emotional well-being in the workplace.

Association Focus: Elevating Sustainability and Communication

Simultaneously, the Association Focus group convened at the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel, sponsored by Amsterdam Convention Bureau. This gathering, in collaboration with ICCA, AC Forum, and ASAE, addressed the pressing need for sustainable event solutions. Evelyn Mansutti from the European Association of Nuclear Medicine shared their progressive steps towards sustainability, including measuring CO2 emissions and implementing new green initiatives annually.

Another critical challenge discussed was the overload of information and the struggle to communicate essential messages effectively. Jose Luis Mira Mira of UPEI pointed out the difficulties in raising awareness about sustainability and transitioning to greener energy solutions in a hyper-connected world.

Leveraging AI in Event Planning

A highlight from the sessions was the introduction of Artificial Intelligence in enhancing association impacts. Veemal Gungadin, CEO of Gevme, presented on how generative AI could serve as a valuable tool for event planners. “Think of AI as your new brainstorming partner, capable of managing those initial drafts of emails, presentations, and proposals, which frees up your time for more strategic tasks,” said Gungadin. This session underscored AI’s role not as a replacement for creativity but as an aid to streamline the preliminary stages of content creation.

Preparing for a Pioneering Event

As IMEX Frankfurt 2024 officially opens its doors today, the anticipations and challenges addressed in these pre-show sessions set the tone for a transformative event. Participants are armed with fresh insights into battling burnout, harnessing creativity within constraints, and pushing the envelope on sustainability.

The event promises to be a melting pot of ideas where industry professionals will explore the latest trends, tackle the most pressing challenges, and discover innovative solutions that will shape the future of the global events industry. With a focus on sustainability, creativity, and the effective use of technology, IMEX Frankfurt 2024 is poised to guide event professionals through the evolving landscape of their field, fostering connections that will lead to enduring innovations and success.

THIS WEEK IN OTTAWA: tulips, bike days, a drone show and a roller skate party

Happy Monday, Ottawa! Do you smell the pollen in the air? Yeah? That must mean we're officially well into tulip season .

As we speak, over a million tulips are blooming all over the National Capital Region. Isn't that wild? The largest tulip festival on the planet is going on right now, and it's here, in Ottawa, "the city that fun forgot."

Here's the hard and cold truth: Ottawa is not boring after all. You just need to know where to look.

This is exactly why Narcity and I are here to provide you with a weekly guide to help you get through your week in the capital. I'll keep you updated with everything you need to know about what's happening in Ottawa each and every Monday. That includes the weather, things to do, entertainment, food recommendations, and so much more.

With all that being said, let's get started.

🗞️ THINGS TO KNOW 🗞️

☀️ weather ☀️.

The sun and rainfall will play peek-a-boo for the first part of the week, but starting Wednesday, you should expect to see more reliable sunshine.

This week's high will be 20 C, with a low of 15 C. If you plan on attending the Tulip Festival, this weekend will be the best time to go, as it'll be a nice and comfortable 20 C.

All in all, even though the weather should be relatively cooperative for this week's festivities, it may be a good idea to keep an umbrella on hand as the weather has been quite unpredictable recently.

If you notice that the city feels smoky this week, don't be alarmed. Wildfire smoke is drifting across Canada and triggering air quality advisories in some areas, although the majority of this is expected to have cleared by the weekend.

🌷TULIP FESTIVITIES ALL WEEK LONG🌷

Over the weekend, the 72nd annual Canadian Tulip Festival officially kicked off and will continue until May 20. It's important to mention that although the festival's official location is Commissioners Park, vibrant tulip displays can be found all over the city.

Commissioners Park is beautiful, but it's relatively small, so if you want to get the most out of this year's tulip season; get your steps in. Consider taking the O-Train to uOttawa station, walking over to the canal, and then walking an hour along the water until you get to Commissioners Park. Along the way, you'll be able to take in the vibrant pinks, purples, oranges, and reds of the blooming tulips of spring.

This week, you'll also find a whole spectrum of colourful tulips in Ottawa and Gatineau's downtowns. I highly recommend taking some time to appreciate how charming the National Capital Region looks right now.

🏒A NEW HEAD COACH FOR THE OTTAWA SENATORS🏒

The search is finally over! Last week, it was announced that the Senators had found their new head coach, Travis Green.

Green, the former head coach for the Vancouver Canucks, and, most recently, the interim head coach for the New Jersey Devils, is set to be the head coach for the next four years.

Before starting his coaching career, Green was a player for 14 seasons, getting his start in the 1989 NHL Draft.

🚲 NCC WEEKEND BIKE DAYS ARE BACK 🚲

Last weekend marked the beginning of the National Capital Commission's Weekend Bike Days for the 2024 season.

Three Ottawa parkways operated by the National Capital Commission will be pedestrianized every weekend until October 14, 2024. No cars or buses will be permitted on the parkways, making it a beautiful place to take a bike ride by yourself, with friends, or with loved ones.

The Kichi Zībī Mīkan Parkway and Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway will be open to just bikes and pedestrians from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. The Queen Elizabeth Driveway will be car-free every Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

🍔 JUST A REALLY TASTY BURGER 🍔

Last week, I had the best burger I've ever eaten in a parking lot in Little Italy. Smash Daddy is Ottawa's most viral food truck, and it only opened in March of this year.

Wherever you are in the city, this food truck is a must-visit.

Government of Canada supports tourism in the Ottawa Region

From: Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario

News release

FedDev Ontario enhances three Ottawa region tourism organizations with $530,000 investment

May 10, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario

With its historic landmarks, natural beauty and cultural festivals, Ottawa is a prime tourism destination in Canada. By attracting domestic and international visitors, the local tourism sector is contributing to good jobs and economic growth in the community and across Ontario.

Today, Marie-France Lalonde, Member of Parliament for Orléans, on behalf of the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario ( FedDev Ontario ), attended the opening of the 2024 Canadian Tulip Festival to announce a combined FedDev Ontario investment of $530,000 through the Tourism Growth Program for the Canadian Tulip Festival , the Ottawa Children’s Festival del la Jeunesse and South Nation Conservation . MP Lalonde was joined by the Honourable Mona Fortier, Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier, and Yasir Naqvi, Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre.

With an investment of $130,000, the Canadian Tulip Festival has added an expansion to the UV-lit tulip garden, located in the ByWard Market, a highlight of this year’s festival. The expansion includes giant artificial flower gardens and displays, all of which are illuminated by UV light at night. This expansion will attract visitors from all over, providing attendees with a large-scale immersive garden and unique pollinator-focused educational experience. It will also draw people to see and shop all the ByWard Market has to offer.

The Ottawa Children's Festival de la Jeunesse will receive a $200,000 investment to expand the festival from a four-day event to five days, which will include the addition of evening events and weekend interactive experiences and performances. This will help to attract new and diverse audiences and communities.

Through an investment of $200,000, South Nation Conservation will revitalize the original Findlay Creek Boardwalk to enable safe and accessible access to the Leitrim Wetland, a significant wetland and biodiversity hotspot for active outdoor experiences. This project also includes the installation of a new trailhead and signage.

The Government of Canada is supporting tourism businesses and organizations that attract visitors to the region while contributing to the local economy and positioning Canada as an all-season destination of choice.

Quick facts

The Canadian Tulip Festival was established in 1953 to celebrate the historic royal gift of tulips from the Dutch to Canadians immediately following the Second World War, as a symbol of international friendship. The Festival preserves the memorable role of the Canadian troops in the liberation of the Netherlands and Europe, as well as commemorates the birth of Dutch Princess Margriet in Ottawa during World War II—the only royal personage ever born in Canada. In 2023, the Canadian Tulip Festival welcomed 416,000 visitors across 11 days.

Incorporated in 1985, the Ottawa Children's Festival de la Jeunesse delivers live performing arts experiences for young audiences to foster creativity while promoting individual expression. Each year, the festival welcomes approximately 15,000 visitors from all over to experience the finest quality theatre, dance and music for young audiences.

Established in 1947, South Nation Conservation welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors each year to its 4,400 km 2 of land in Eastern Ontario. The organization has led hundreds of stewardship projects to protect or improve natural resources.

Delivered by Canada’s regional development agencies, the Tourism Growth Program is providing $108 million, over three years, directly to businesses and organizations to help diversify regional economies by investing in tourism products and experiences that will encourage visitation to and within Canada. In southern Ontario, FedDev Ontario is delivering over $30 million through the program.

Since 2015, the Government of Canada, through FedDev Ontario, has invested over $415 million in more than 1,440 tourism-related businesses and organizations, estimated to create over 4,700 jobs and maintain over 20,000 jobs.

The latest on the massive solar storm

By Angela Fritz, Elise Hammond and Chris Lau, CNN

Incredible lighthouse picture from Maine

From CNN's Chris Lau

A long-exposure photo shows the aurora borealis over Portland, Maine, on May 10.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Watch the full interview with Williamson here .

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

By CNN's Chris Lau

The northern lights can be seen from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on May 10.

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle."

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun are creating dazzling auroras across the globe .

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

Bill Nye the Science Guy speaks to CNN on Friday, May 10.

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

From CNN's Angela Fritz

An infrared satellite image taken around 10:30 p.m. ET.

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour.

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.

Aurora seen in Atlanta around 10:15 p.m. ET.
