British Isles Cruise – Complete Packing List + Printable Checklist

If you are considering a British Isles cruise you may be wondering what you need to pack. The unpredictable weather can make packing for a British Isles cruise a little harder than other locations but I have successfully managed it and will show you everything that I packed in this article.

I took a British Isles cruise in 2018 and it was amazing.

Below is a photo of me during my British Isles cruise. Note the red coat, that came in handy! We talk about clothing later in this article.

British Isles Cruise Loch Ness Passport

British Isles Cruise – Packing List: Essentials

Your passport is the most important item you’ll pack.

Even if you are from Britain and are taking a British isles cruise you will need a passport.

If you are from America or Australia there are certain cruises which you can do without a passport but this isn’t the case in Britain, all passengers must have a valid passport.

All guests coming from overseas will need a valid passport. It was the case that 6 months validity is required after the trip.

Bring Your Cruise Ticket to Make Everything Easier

Prior to your cruise, you will either:

  • Be emailed a cruise ticket (most common).
  • A ticket will be sent to you in the mail (less common).

If you are able to print out the cruise ticket it makes the process of checking in for the cruise much easier.

At check-in all that you need is this cruise ticket and your passport, a credit card also usually makes things easier but it isn’t mandatory for you to embark on your cruise.

In theory, the cruise line could find your booking from your passport but it’s much easier if you print the ticket yourself.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance Confirmation

You will need travel insurance for a British isles cruise even if you are British. If you did become unwell or injure yourself treatment onboard is still incredibly expensive and getting you back to land to seek further treatment can cost a lot.

If you are from outside of Britain this is even more important.

Travel insurance can also cover you for things like lost luggage and possibly even missed ports if the travel insurance you buy includes this feature.

I always use a comparison website to buy my cruise specific travel insurance, check out my recommendations here: Travel Insurance Recommendations .

If you are not yet convinced that you need travel insurance to cruise check out this post which tells the story of a man who died when he had a stroke on a Carnival cruise and was unable to get back to the US as he didn’t have travel insurance.

Bring Any Prescriptions You May Need (Plus Extras!)

When cruising it’s always important that you bring any prescription medicines you may need and also bring your prescriptions with you if possible.

This way if you run out of your medicine when on board for any reason you may be able to get a refill and it provides a useful record of which medicines you take.

It’s important that when you check-in for your cruise you bring medicines in your hand luggage rather than your checked-in bag as you will be separated from your checked-in bag for a while and there is always the possibility that it will be lost.

Cruise ships do have pharmacies on board but these are limited. To learn more about the onboard medical facilities, check out the post below:

Cruise Ships Don’t Have Full Pharmacies on Board – Here’s What They Have

Print Your Own Luggage Tags if Possible

Many cruise lines will send you luggage tags. Some send the actual tags and others you are required to download and print at home.

This isn’t usually mandatory and if you don’t do it you can get the tags at the port but it makes things much easier if you have already done it at home.

The last thing you want is to have to stand in another line when you get to the port!

You usually have to either staple or tape your luggage tag to your suitcase so I usually bring a roll of tape with me if I am staying somewhere before the cruise.

You NEED to Pack Travel Adapters For Your Cruise

When I took my first British Isles cruise with a friend she forgot to bring travel adapters (I had a spare)!

Don’t assume that cruise ships cruising the British Isles will have UK plug sockets because the majority don’t.

Generally speaking, cruise ships have a combination of UK and US plug sockets so bring an adapter for both. You can usually buy adapters onboard in the gift shop but these are incredibly expensive.

Bring Your Phone/Camera to Take Photos

I think this one goes without saying but make sure you pack your phone if you have one.

I use mine primarily is as a camera and carry it with me everywhere.

If you have a separate camera or action camera bring this too but don’t forget to bring all the chargers that you’ll need!

I’d also suggest bringing a battery pack if your phone is likely to keep running out of battery.

There isn’t much more annoying than wanting to take a photo of something and realizing your battery has run out.

You’ll Need a Credit/Debit Card and Cash

It’s usually easiest to attach a credit or debit card to your onboard account and to pay for your onboard expenses this way.

On many cruise lines, you are also able to ‘load’ cash onto your onboard account or pay in cash at the end. I also suggest bringing some cash for things like taxis and tipping.

It can be difficult to know just how much cash to bring on a cruise, I usually bring very little, to find out what I do recommend, check out this post:  How Much Cash Should I Bring on a Cruise? Budgeting Guide

british isles cruise packing

Save Money on Laundry by Bringing Travel Wash

If you think that you may need to wash some items of clothing but don’t want to pay for the onboard laundry one option is to bring a small bottle of travel wash and wash some clothes in the sink.

I’ve done this on a number of occasions and it does work well for certain things.

Some cruise lines do have self-service laundries and if the cruise line you’re cruising with has these this is usually an easy way to wash your clothes for a cheap price.

That said, don’t spend too much of your cruise doing laundry!

Embarkation Day Bag

When you embark you will check in your luggage and it’ll arrive later in your cabin. For a few hours on embarkation day you will be without access to your luggage so it is important that you keep any essentials that you need in your embarkation day bag.

I usually keep everything I need in my Mia Tui handbag.

A few things to keep in your embarkation day bag are:

  • Any Medicines You May Need
  • Your Passport
  • Your Car/House Keys
  • Cameras/Phones
  • Cruise Tickets and Documentation

British Isles Cruise – Packing List: Clothes

For a 7 night British Isles cruise I would recommend packing the following quantity of each item:

Pack More Underwear Than You Think You’ll Need!

I’d always recommend packing at least 7 sets of underwear/socks and would suggest that you pack more than this.

You might go swimming mid-way through the day and want to change or you might go on an excursion and get wet feet.

It’s always better to pack more underwear than you think you’ll need! If you do run out though, you can use the travel wash that we mentioned earlier.

Underwear is very easy to wash using a travel wash and can be hung in the bathroom to dry.

Simple T-Shirt and Tops Are Key!

7 t-shirts or tops of some kind should be more than enough. That said, you will probably want to get changed for dinner and may want to include some more formal t-shirt or blouses.

If you are planning on doing any exercise classes onboard you may also need a couple of workout appropriate tops.

Princess cruises cruise around the British Isles frequently and have free Zumba classes onboard. Don’t miss these if you are cruising with Princess!

To learn more about the included Zumba and other things that you shouldn’t miss on a Princess cruise, check out this post: Golden Princess Review, Food, Ship & More!

Bring Evening Wear if You’d Like to Change

Depending on the cruise line you may have formal nights.

Formal nights usually require men to wear a shirt and women to wear either an evening dress or a top/trousers combination.

I usually pack 2 or 3 ‘formal’ outfits for a 7-night cruise but don’t forget that things like formal shoes/cardigans/shrugs can be re-worn!

It isn’t against the rules to wear the same thing for multiple formal nights either, you’ll likely only be wearing it for a few hours and if you don’t spill anything down your front you are good to go!

Norwegian Cruise Line Formal Nights

You’ll Need Pants/Trousers/Jeans as The Weather is Unpredictable

The weather in the British Isles can be INCREDIBLY unpredictable.

I was very lucky when I cruised to the British Isles because we had glorious sunshine almost every day.

That said, even if it’s sunny in the morning it can be pouring with rain in the afternoon so it’s important you have enough trousers/jeans to wear every day if needs be.

For a 7 night cruise, I would pack around 3 pairs of pants/trousers/jeans.

Do NOT Cruise to The British Isles Without Multiple Sweaters/Jumpers/Hoodies

This is possibly the most important thing that you will pack for a British Isles cruise and I would recommend that you pack more layers than you usually would.

For a 7 night cruise, I would recommend packing 3 hoodies/jumpers/cardigans/pullovers of some kind.

Even if you are lucky and have the best weather possible this is likely to be mid 20c’s (70f’s) and the weather can change fast.

I’d always recommend bringing something small with you incase it does get cold and/or rain. The weather, particularly in Scotland can be very unpredictable.

Bring Comfortable Shoes (and Formal Shoes Too)

For a British Isles cruise, I would recommend that you first pack a pair of shoes which you are comfortable walking in such as sneakers or trainers.

You will probably be walking quite a lot and if you are visiting places like Giants Causeway it’s important that you have a good grip and feel comfortable walking in the shoes.

I’d also recommend that you bring some waterproof shoes such as boots. When it rains it rains a LOT and having wet shoes is not ideal. I’ve been on cruises before where it has taken multiple days for my shoes to dry after a rainstorm.

For formal nights/onboard the ship I would recommend that you pack a couple of pairs which are either heels/flats/sandals.

It’s usually relatively warm inside the cruise ship and you don’t have to worry about your feet getting wet!

Don’t be afraid to re-wear the same shoes, by sticking to neutral tones you can avoid having to change your shoes to go with each outfit.

I usually bring one pair of nude or black heels which I pair with most outfits for dinner.

british isles packing list

Consider Bringing Nightwear

This one is up to you but I’d recommend packing some nice pajamas.

Some cruise cabins do include bathrobes but being able to step out onto your balcony in your pajamas is nice!

The Most Important Thing to Pack for a British Isles Cruise is a Coat

I would recommend that you pack at least one good heavy coat.

The best thing to do is usually to wear this on embarkation day as then it doesn’t take up too much room in your suitcase.

As far as coat sizing goes bring a larger coat than you would usually wear because you’ll probably be layering up and wearing this over a sweater.

Don’t be fooled if you are embarking on a British Isles cruise in Southampton and the weather looks good that it will be for the entire cruise.

The weather changes quickly and it can be sunny in one part of the country and pouring with rain in another. Never take a British isles cruise without packing a coat.

British Isles Cruise – Packing List: Extras

Consider a small umbrella.

Having a little umbrella in your bag can save the day when on a British isles cruise.

I wouldn’t recommend bringing a full-sized umbrella as having to carry this around can be quite annoying but a small fold-up one that can fit in your backpack or handbag is definitely a good idea.

If you are cruising with a luxury cruise line like Viking you will have umbrellas available for you to use.

To learn more about cruising with Viking, including how to make the most of the included drinks, check out this post: Viking Ocean Cruises: What’s included (12 things)

viking cruises umbrella

Pack Hat and Gloves if Cruising to the British Isles

It can get incredibly cold and having a simple hat and gloves is definitely a good idea.

You probably won’t need these in the peak of summer (July-August) as it’s more likely to be rainy than cold but if you are traveling at any other time of year I’d recommend packing some.

If you’re cruising outside of summer a scarf might be a good idea too.

You May Need Suncream/Sunscreen, Even in Britain!

This may sound silly given the suggestions above but believe it or not, it can get pretty hot on a British Isles cruise!

Before you go have a quick look at the weather forecast and if there is any risk of hot wear make sure you pack sunscreen/suncream.

You would be able to buy this on the ship if you forgot it but toiletries sold on the ship are usually very expensive.

Always Bring A Small Fold up Coat

On my British Isles cruise, I took a very small fold-up waterproof coat that folded into a bag.

It was very inexpensive and wasn’t really very waterproof but it did the job when there was a light rain forecast.

Fold up coats like this are also great because they don’t make you very warm, sometimes wearing a big coat can feel too hot even if it is raining, especially if you are walking around a lot.

What to pack for British Isles?

I am going on British Isles Cruise. We will be in South Hampton, then stopping in Ireland, Scotland, Paris. This will be at the end of August into early September. When we return to South Hampton, we will be heading to London to spend a few days. Suggestions on what to pack?

Clothes: 1) good quality packable raincoat with a hood 2) zip-up fleece type vest or jacket. You can wear the zip-up fleece and the raincoat separately or together based on weather conditions. If you like birds/wildlife - bring compact binoculars (8 x 20). I like lightweight day-hiking boots and smartwool socks (medium or heavy weight). You will be walking on hills and uneven stone/concrete surfaces.

Rain gear. A good sweater. The weather is variable, and rain is often a constant companion. Also, it's often cooler than what we experience in certain parts of the U.S.

Late August and Early September in the UK and the Continent can be hot because it is still Summer. You only need a light weight weather resistant jacket. You can wear this over a cardigan or pullover sweater for warmth at night or at sea. You can carry an umbrella. Comfortable shoes are the most important item: water resistant leather with rubber soles. You can wear cloth shoes or sandals on the boat. Wear nice slacks. Remember to bring a swimsuit. I would bring a couple of skirts, so I could dress up for an occasion. Bring a hat with a tie for rain, wind or sun.

Sorry dont mean to be picky but it is Southampton not South Hampton😀

Careful Caro, I gently admonished someone previously for making that mistake. It appears I hurt their sensitive sensibilities as I received some gentle words of advice from the Webmaster. I sometimes wonder how some people manage in the big wide world and if they get upset because I've advised them the correct way to write or say the name of a city (Edinburgh is a common one, frequently pronounced in the same way one would would pronounce Pittsburgh. Personally I'd be grateful that someone advised me correcrtly in order to save me from future embarassment).

Not saying this is the case with the OP, quite possibly an auto correction.

I would want a waterproof, hooded jacket (or something longer). On a cruise you will have little time at each destination and will not want to give up sightseeing time to huddle in a cafe every time it starts to rain--which it is likely to do quite often in the places on your itinerary. It may be blustery, especially in coastal areas, so an umbrella will not always be useful, thus the recommendation for a hooded jacket. I use a soft sun hat that I've wateproofed and can wear under the hood to keep rain off my face.

Whether you need to run out and buy waterproof shoes (or waterproof shoes you already own) depends on your tolerance for wet feet. The shorter the trip, the more I'd be tempted to just take something comfortable from my closet. You may not have time to break in a new pair of shoes. But understand that it would not be shocking to have rain every day--though I imagine that would be statistically unlikely.

Thank you for the warning JC😁

What to pack for a cruise to the UK and Cruise Packing Checklist

What to pack for a cruise to the UK and Cruise Packing Checklist

CRUISE TIPS: The UK is rich with historical sites and breathtaking landscapes and therefore a delightful destination to cruise. Cruising allows you to take in the region’s most exciting and iconic attractions easily and see a lot in a short period of time. Here’s what to pack for a cruise to the UK.

what to pack for a cruise to the UK packing checklist

Although the UK is known for its rain, the summer months are relatively warm with little rainfall compared to the rest of the year. However, there can be unexpected and sudden rain and gusty winds so it’s important to know what to pack for a cruise to the UK that allows for a variety of weather conditions with little warning from Mother Nature.

what to pack for british isles cruise in august

What to pack for a cruise to the UK includes bringing clothes that can be layered. Depending on which areas of the UK you are travelling to, temperatures can vary dramatically even during the summer.

pack for UK cruise bridge and castle

The coastal and northern areas such as Scotland, Ireland and northern England tend to be chilly, so pack jackets such as a light raincoat or waterproof windbreaker with a hood that can be worn over shirts and sweaters. The warmer, southern regions of the UK won’t require as much protection but pack a light coat and umbrella in your knapsack just in case. While many shore excursion buses provide umbrellas for tours, they are not always offered.

pack for UK cruise church

In the UK you can expect to visit a wide range of attractions from magnificent castles and glorious gardens to large museums and cozy pubs and shops. On days that you know you’ll be walking a lot, wear a pair of comfortable shoes.

pack for UK cruise castle

There are lots of cobblestone streets in the UK, so it’s best not to wear high heels or other unstable footwear, nor open-toe shoes so you don’t stub your toe. Footwear can take up lot of space in your suitcase so consider choices that do double-duty. Sneakers are great for both site-seeing and working out. Loafers can go from casual to dressy if they’re the right colour and style. Consider black or neutral dress shoes that go with almost everything.

Shoes that are waterproof are also a good idea to bring in case it rains and you have to walk near puddles, wet grass and dirt. Or bring waterproof shoes or shoe covers that you can easily slip over your shoes if needed. Today’s newest covers slip on easily over your shoes and have grips along the bottom for traction.

pack for uk cruise towers

Sites such as religious buildings may require you to wear modest clothing to enter. Therefore, what to pack for a cruise to the UK should include items you can use to cover up your bare shoulders, arms and head.

pack for UK cruise stone bridge

Pack clothes that can also do double-duty such as dark jeans that are fine for site-seeing and more presentable for dining rooms than blue jeans when on the ship. Or pack workout wear that could also be worn when site-seeing on shore.

what to pack UK cruise churches castles

Pants with leg zippers are also ideal to easily convert to shorts if the weather is warm. And cargo pants with lots of pockets are ideal for travelling and carrying many items – as long as the pockets can be secured.

On the ship

Knowing what to pack for a UK cruise to wear when on the ship depends on the cruise line as some are more formal than others. Visit the cruise line’s website and search “Dress code” for guidance.

In general, most cruise ships have a wide variety of restaurants and bars so pack at least one outfit that’s formal enough to adhere to the most upscale dining venue so you can enjoy any of them even if you’re a bit ‘overdressed’ for the more casual options.

Business casual is the most common dress code for most ship venues and for men this means longer tailored dress shorts or pants and a collared shirt. For women, this includes dresses, skirts and blouses, dress shorts or capris. Always carry a shawl or sweater for those chilly spaces such as dining rooms and theatres that are heavily air-conditioned so you don’t have a long walk back to your cabin to get one.

If you want to attend formal night activities or venues, men can wear suits or dress slacks with a sport coat, dress shirt and tie, or go all out with a tuxedo if it’s an upscale cruise line. For women, cocktail dresses, pant suits or elegant skirts and blouses are ideal. Consider clothing made of fine fabrics like silk and polyester that are lightweight and don’t take up much space.

Casual jeans, T-shirts, workout wear, sleeveless shirts (for men), flipflops and sneakers are best to wear around the pool, gym, recreational or sports venues such as basketball courts, mini-golf and shuffleboard, casual outdoor bars or out on deck.

With most ships having amenities such as pools, hot tubs, waterparks and spas, pack a swimsuit for those days spent at sea or after the end of a long day at the spa.

Also consider an overall colour theme such as black and white clothes to offer greater ability to mix and match. Black items perform well for evening wear and white clothes for casual day wear. When used together they always match.

And if there’s something you’ve forgotten to pack, the cruise ship gift shop likely has something you can wear that’s suitable until you can go ashore and shop for exactly what you want.

Cruise packing tips and tricks

For your carry-on luggage keep your important documents in a safe place that can be easily reached for officials who need to check them frequently. Also pack a spare outfit that could be worn for site-seeing, as well as restaurant dining on the ship in case your luggage gets lost or delayed and takes a day or two to catch up.

Medication and essential toiletries also need to be in your carry-on luggage and if for some reason your carry-on must be gate-checked for your flight, keep medication in one small bag that’s easy to pull out and carry by hand on board.

While many people like to roll their clothes to reduce wrinkling, it doesn’t always conserve space due to the gaps in between.

Instead, try flat packing – laying each item open and flat such as an unfolded shirt with the sleeves hanging over the sides of your suitcase and the collar at the top. Layer all your shirts or blouses open and on top of each other in the same way and tuck in all the sleeves altogether along the sides of the case. Also use the circumference of your suitcase for shoes with heels in the corners.

For pants and skirts, alternate where waist bands go. Arrange so that half the waistbands are at one end of your suitcase and the other half are at the other end, or stagger the location of belt areas like a waterfall to balance out the bulk.

Another packing style many travellers like is using packing cubes to keep similar items together for great organization in your cabin. But cubes might mean fewer items will fit in your suitcase simply due to the construction of the cubes taking up space.

What To Pack for a British Isles Cruise

June 24, 2019 by barb

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned or linked to in this post, including Amazon Affiliate links.

A few days ago I returned from a 14 day British Isles cruise on the Norwegian Pearl. I fretted for months about what to pack for a British Isles cruise because you have so many variables to think about. The weather can change from cold and rainy to hot and humid daily. With the itinerary so spread out you may hike, city tour and just kick back in pubs-all within a few days. I thought I would do the round up of what worked and what didn’t to help any of you out there considering a similar cruise.

What To Pack for British Isles Cruise

Our British Isles Cruise Itinerary:

  • 3 stops in the Norwegian Fjords (Flam, Geiranger, Haugesund)
  • Scottish Highlands (Inverness)
  • Paris (Le Havre)

We sailed mid June. 75% of the time it was cold and rainy. The 25% like London and Paris and Brugge were hot and humid. We only saw the sun one day on the ship. The ship had freestyle casual dining and no formal nights. There were only 3 at sea days. I used the thermal spa every day of the trip so the two suits were absolutely necessary for drying. We hiked in 4 of the spots. I had a bag of laundry sent out on day 7 to be done by the ship.

A picture of what to pack for a British Isles cruise is below. If I were to do it again I would not bring the shorts, white jeans, flowered blouse or one of the black v neck t’s. You can’t tell in the pic but the first black t-shirt has a criss cross cut out so it was redundant to have both.

What To Pack for a British Isles Cruise

What To Pack for a British Isles Cruise WINNERS:

Both pairs of Lululemon On the Fly black pants . I know they were very similar – one 7/8 and one crop but it was good to have clean ones to mix up. The crops were great for London and Paris and the 7/8 for 2 days of very long travel plus dinners on the ship.

Athleta Headlands Highland Pant-these are water resistant so they were both my hiking pants and my touring pants on very rainy days. I wore these the most out of everything I brought.

Lululemon Black High Waist Align Tights were perfect for lounging around on the ship and could have been worn with anything I had.

Eddie Bauer Infinity hiking shirt was easy to sink wash and hang for hiking

The black/white was a sweater and I was very glad to have it.

The white/Black was a cotton long sleeve and it was perfect for layering.

Scott E Vest Lucille black cardigan is great to do double duty as a bathing suit cover up and anywhere else you would need a cardigan. I always fly with it.

Scott E Vest red travel vest made it easy to carry my passport and money on the days we hiked or had big walks and I didn’t want to carry a bag.

Puffer jacket was from 32 Degrees and was comfy and had a great little pouch.

Rain jacket was Columbia Splash A Little II

What To Pack for a British Isles Cruise: Shoes

Salomon trail runners (Speedcross 5) worked great for our hikes and I even wore them to Giants Causeway for better footing. It’s very slippery on the rocks there. You don’t NEED them for there but since I already had them with me it was perfect.

ECCO Women’s Omni-Vent GORE-TEX waterproof Sneaker were PERFECT for city walking. Held up great!

Allbirds white tree runners heavily sprayed with stain resister. These were comfy for days with less walking and more tours. I would never wear these in a big city though. They would be ruined.

Allbirds ballet flats worked perfectly on the ship for dinners. I went back and forth between these and my poppy Tieks before leaving and these won for comfort. They are super light and a nothing to pack.

Flip flops -see comment about thermal spa. Plus it was just nice to give my feet a break. They are Crocs that I picked up in Hawaii years ago and so comfy.

What To Pack for a British Isles Cruise: Bags

Rebecca Minkoff Julian Nylon – I really loved this. It did fit a ton and was comfy to carry. That said, it rained a lot and I wished I had sprung for the leather model. Also the nylon does not have zipper on back but a reach in pouch so I kept money/passport inside with all the clips locked together. I didn’t use this in Paris or London as I didn’t like that it wasn’t slash proof.

Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Messenger Bag (Truffle) purse with two water bottle holders was perfect to put a water bottle on one side and tiny umbrella on the other. Umbrellas are useless in Amsterdam wind btw.

For both of the bags I used jacket clip ons . Worked great. They were a lifesaver.

Suitcases: my son and I both had carryons and we brought an almost empty checked bag on the way there. We came home with those and an extra foldable duffel bag I threw in all FULL. Lol.

Carryon: Genius Pack 4. The dimensions on Icelandair state this is too big but to everyone’s surprise it fit in their slider every time. I had tried it prior to the trip as well.

Checked: Ebags Motherlode 25 . Love this bag. Holds a TON but easy to go overweight in.

An absolute essential was a small grocery bag in a tiny pouch that I kept in my purse. Most merchants either didn’t have bags or charged for them. I used this most days.

I would really like to thank the Travel Fashion Girls Facebook group for all the wonderful advice and friendship I receive there as I get better and better at packing more efficiently. You should join if you want some more, friendly advice and Alex, the owner of the site, has some fabulously detailed packing guides guides if you need more help.

Packing: British Isles Cruise

We recently went on an 11-Night British Isles Cruise with Norwegian Cruise Lines, and I struggled to find suggestions on what to pack. We went in late Spring, so the best tip we could find was to bring clothing that was easy to layer based on forecasts.

A good point to note is that Norwegian is “Freestyle Cruising,” which means you don’t have to get dressed up to go to dinner and there is no official formal night. I wish I knew that in advance! I would have packed a little differently.

Here’s what I packed that I actually used on the cruise!

Packing for for your British Isles Cruise

We would strongly recommend that you pack for a range of climatic conditions varying from warmer weather to cooler and wetter days by taking light and medium-weight clothing, which can be layered for warmth/comfort as the weather changes. If your cruise is classified as an expedition cruise, a warm, waterproof and windproof jacket or windbreaker is essential to protect you against the cold, wind, rain and spray whilst in Zodiacs. It is also important to ensure your walking boots/footwear are waterproof in case of rain or sea spray coming into the Zodiac.

The dress code on board is defined as casual. During the day, comfortable and casual attire is appropriate and the evenings are smart casual. Jackets and ties are not required although you may wish to wear something a little dressier for the welcome & farewell dinners.

View Expedition Leader, Pam Le Noury’s top tips for packing for temperate regions such as the British Isles

For excursions, the following items of clothing are recommended:

  • Sturdy and waterproof shoes/boots to use in Zodiacs (if applicable) and when going ashore.
  • Sturdy shoes or trainers with good grip for hikes, guided walks and on board the ship.
  • Warm socks.
  • Waterproof shell jacket.
  • Waterproof over-trousers (strongly recommended, particularly for Zodiac trips).
  • Comfortable long trousers & convertible three-quarter length trousers.
  • Shirts for on board and ashore.
  • Mid-layers, for example wool jersey, fleece, down jacket.
  • Head cover: peak cap and/or woollen hat (beanie).
  • Gloves; a lighter pair is ideal for use with binoculars and cameras and a thicker pair for cold days.

The following equipment and accessories are also recommended:

  • Sunglasses; preferably polarised.
  • Camera, protective case, charger or spare batteries, spare memory cards or film.
  • Binoculars.
  • Universal or US adaptor for use on board the ship (as outlets accept American standard 2-rectangular-pin plugs). If your electrical devices are not dual-voltage and/or do not operate on 110 volts you would also require a voltage convertor - a limited number of adaptors are available from Reception. Please refer to the “Adaptors” and “Electricity” sections of the Ship Information booklet for further details.
  • Backpack; lightweight and water-resistant for carrying items ashore and keeping your hands free.
  • Sunblock, insect repellent, motion sickness remedy, a personal medical kit, a money belt, a phone charger, a collapsible walking stick (if required), an umbrella and a water bottle.

Please note that the above information is a general guideline for packing for our British Isles cruises. Please contact one of our experience travel consultations for specific information pertaining to each cruise itinerary. Further information will also be provided to booked passengers.

Overall, it was truly the trip of a lifetime. What I love about cruising is that you unpack ONCE…I tend to overpack for our getaways (…blaming it on my profession haha), so hanging up all my clothes and sliding my suitcase under the bed + not having to even think about it for two weeks is pure bliss. It’s really nice to have a “home base” after long days of exploring new cities…we really enjoyed the room service aspect, too, ha! Pro tip: pizza service ends at 10pm, so make note! 😉

If you have questions about our trip, please leave a comment below!! I had so much fun chatting with y’all via Instagram during this getaway…we loved all the recommendations we received! As always, thanks for stopping by, XO.

A big thank you to Princess Cruises for sponsoring this post! All opinions are my own.

I love all your photos! I’m leaving next Friday for a Mediterranean cruise. It’s a different trip then yours but I enjoyed seeing that you had a great time in spots that you only had a few hours in. We have to travel an hour and a half by train into Florence Italy. So I’m already worried about getting to see enough. But you looked like it’s doable for sure! Love your style! Just adorable! And Edinburgh is my most favorite city in the world!

This trip looks like it was amazing!! I’ve always been a little nervous about cruises but I think I could handle one that brings me to cities like these (versus Caribbean cruises!) They all look like such fun places to visit and after seeing all of your photos I know I need to plan a trip there!

Oh and I wish I could hire you as a personal stylist / personal shopper – your style is amazing! I always use your photos as inspiration when I’m shopping!

Love this itinerary! And your pictures are gorgeous (as always!). How do you edit your pictures??

' src=

Always so jealous of your travels! This trip looked AMAZING and I’ve definitely added like all of the locations you mentioned to my travel bucket list, haha! Also that flannel you wore in Glasgow is perfect.

I’m so excited to see Edinburgh included here! I am going there in October and have put your recommendations on our list of activities!

Obsessed! This cruise is now on our list for travel plans in the next couple of years. Every stop looked like a dream. Can’t wait!

Thank you so much for posting all of this! We went to Ireland this past May for a week for my husband’s 30th and now we’re trying to figure out what to do for mine next summer. This looks perfect!! (And you look fantastic as always!)

Always checking back for that Irish soda bread recipe! 😉 This trip looks unreal and has been moved to the top of our lists of next vacays to plan for! Thank you for sharing!!

I hear ya girly! 😉 JUST published that recipe post, yay!! http://livvyland.com/2018/09/26/traditional-irish-soda-bread-easy-recipe/

Thanks for the kind words, hope you love the Irish Soda Bread! xoxo

Love everything about this post!! My 88 year old grandmother, my mom, my 5 year old daughter & I are taking this same exact cruise next month!! I’ve been so busy with work it was hard to get excited about the trip but after reading this & seeing your pictures I too am getting the feels!! As for Paris, did you pay for the excursion to get there (the 2.5 hour ride) or when you got off the boat did you hop in a cab? Not thrilled about the long drive, I’ve been to Paris before but we will be too close to miss it! Thanks for any other recommendations you would like to share!

Hey Becca! Aww, what an incredible trip you’re about to embark on!! It’s SUCH a wonderful itinerary, you’ll have the best time – and what a special girls trip with FOUR generations! Memories to cherish forever. I worked with Princess Cruises via partnership for my blog, thus, they had a bus for all of the bloggers on board. However, they do have a bus option that you would book as an excursion. It’s a “hop-on, hop-off” option. But totally agree, too close to miss Paris!!

British Isles cruise tips: Everything you need to know about cruising the UK

Author: Susan Johnson

Published on: 25 May 2022

What to see on a British Isle cruise? Or rather, what’s not to see on a British Isle cruise? From beautiful coastlines, castles, rolling green countryside, to dramatic mountain landscapes and traditional pubs, British Isle cruises exude culture and heritage.

British Isle cruises make an excellent holiday option for several reasons. To begin with, the UK and its islands are home to picturesque coastlines and diverse scenery. And what is a better way to experience it than from the sea and the waterways?

A cruise offers a perfect and enjoyable way to see the best features of the British Isles without lengthy and tiring road and rail journeys or short-haul flights.

What’s more, being small in size, you will never have to spend more than two sea days on longer cruises and one sea day on shorter itineraries. This gives you ample time to explore the ports you will be visiting.

This is everything you need to know about taking a UK cruise.

The right time to be in Britain really depends on your preferences.

With four distinct seasons, it is a year-round destination. Spring (March, April, and May) is an ideal time to see the countryside in full bloom and explore the towns when they are less crowded.

While summer (June, July, and August) is the peak holiday period with the warmest weather, autumn (September, October, and November) is when you can witness the countryside lit up with hues of orange, red, and yellow.

Winter (December, January, and February) is the coldest season, but it’s when the country radiates the Christmas spirit – and is maybe even dusted with snow!

British Isles cruise tips

Pack for the weather.

The weather in Britain can often be unpredictable. Regardless of the season, there’s always a chance of rain. So, make sure you include an umbrella in your packing list.

When it comes to the onboard dress codes, most cruise lines accept casual by day and more formal in the evening.

Nevertheless, more traditional cruise lines like Cunard tend to give you guidelines.

Additionally, consider packing clothes that can be layered, an outdoor jacket and a pair of comfortable shoes.

Learn about the tipping culture

While you will have to follow onboard gratuities policy, tipping isn’t the same way as it is in other countries such as the US on dry land. For instance, you don’t necessarily have to pay a tip for fast food, takeaway meal, or self-service. Likewise, in coffee shops, tipping is rare. But you sure can leave £1 or your change to appreciate their service.

In almost all restaurants, 10 to 15 percent of the bill should be left in gratuities. Make sure you check your tab, as some restaurants tend to add a 12.5 to 15 percent service charge. If you don’t spot this, you will end up tipping twice.

It isn’t customary to tip bartenders in pubs and bars. Nonetheless, if you wish to show your appreciation, say “and one for yourself.” This means you are offering to buy him or her a drink. Typically, the bartender will deny pouring a drink and take the money.

Know the onboard currency

Depending on the cruise line, the currency used onboard could be the US dollar or the British pound. For instance, if you cruise on a British line such as P&O , all your onboard charges will be calculated in British Pounds.

However, when sailing on American cruise lines like Silversea or Celebrity , you will pay all your bills in US dollars.

A British Isles cruise is a wonderful way to explore the diverse and picturesque landscapes of the United Kingdom and Ireland. However, when it comes to packing for a 12-day cruise, it can be challenging to decide what clothing items are essential. The weather in this region can be unpredictable and vary greatly from day to day, so it's important to pack wisely. Here are some essential clothing items to consider when packing for a 12-day British Isles cruise.

Layered clothing:

The weather in the British Isles can change rapidly, so pack a variety of clothing that can be layered. This will allow you to adapt to different temperatures and conditions throughout your cruise. For example, pack lightweight and breathable t-shirts and long-sleeved shirts that can be easily layered with sweaters or jackets when it gets cooler.

The British Isles are known for their rainy weather, so it's important to be prepared. Bring a lightweight and waterproof jacket or raincoat to keep you dry during those inevitable showers. Additionally, pack a compact umbrella that can easily fit in your bag.

Comfortable walking shoes:

Exploring the ports of call during your cruise will likely involve a lot of walking, so make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Opt for a sturdy pair of sneakers or walking shoes that provide good support and cushioning.

Formal attire:

Most cruises have formal nights where passengers are expected to dress up for dinner. Make sure to pack at least one or two formal outfits such as a cocktail dress or a suit. Check with your cruise line for their dress code requirements to ensure you pack appropriate attire.

Even though the British Isles are not known for their warm and sunny climate, there may still be opportunities to enjoy the ship's pool or the beaches at certain ports. Pack a swimsuit so you can take advantage of these amenities when available.

Light and breathable fabrics:

Given the changeable weather, it's a good idea to pack clothing items made from light and breathable fabrics. Materials such as cotton or linen will help keep you cool in warmer temperatures and can be easily layered for added warmth when needed.

Accessories:

Don't forget to pack accessories such as a hat, sunglasses, and a scarf. These items can provide additional protection from the sun and wind and can also add a stylish touch to your outfits.

Laundry supplies:

If you don't want to pack an excessive amount of clothing, consider bringing some travel-sized laundry detergent or stain remover. This will allow you to do some light laundry in your cabin and reuse some items throughout your cruise.

Remember, packing for a British Isles cruise requires flexibility due to the ever-changing weather. By packing a mix of layered clothing, rain gear, comfortable shoes, and formal attire, you will be prepared for whatever the weather brings during your 12-day adventure. Enjoy your cruise and all the beautiful destinations the British Isles have to offer!

Essential Items to Pack in Your Pregnancy Bag

You may want to see also

When traveling to the British Isles, it is important to be prepared for the unpredictable weather conditions that can occur throughout the year. The region experiences a temperate maritime climate, which means that weather patterns can change rapidly and vary from one area to another. As a result, it is important to pack a variety of items to ensure that you are comfortable and safe during your trip.

One of the key items to pack for the British Isles is a waterproof jacket or coat. Rain showers are common throughout the year, and having a reliable waterproof layer will help keep you dry and protected from the elements. Look for jackets that are both waterproof and breathable, as this will allow you to stay comfortable even if you are active or the weather becomes humid.

In addition to a waterproof jacket, it is also important to pack layers of clothing that can be easily added or removed depending on the temperature. The British Isles can experience both warm and cold weather, even in the same day, so being able to adjust your clothing accordingly is essential. Pack a mix of t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a lightweight but warm jacket to ensure that you are prepared for any type of weather.

Footwear is another important consideration when traveling to the British Isles. The region can be quite muddy, particularly in rural areas and during the wetter months, so having a pair of waterproof boots or shoes is highly recommended. Not only will this help keep your feet dry, but it will also provide better traction on slippery surfaces.

Packing a hat and sunglasses is also advisable, as the British Isles can experience both sunny and cloudy weather. Even on cloudy days, it is still possible to get sunburned, so protecting your head and eyes from the sun's rays is important.

Finally, don't forget to pack a small umbrella or travel-sized rain poncho. While a waterproof jacket will provide adequate protection in most situations, having an umbrella or rain poncho can be useful for unexpected downpours or when you want to keep your backpack or belongings dry.

Overall, packing for the differing weather conditions in the British Isles requires a combination of waterproof and breathable clothing, layers for temperature adjustment, appropriate footwear, and accessories for sun and rain protection. By being prepared with these items, you will be able to enjoy your trip to the British Isles regardless of the weather conditions.

Essential Items to Pack for Hajj: Your Complete Guide

When packing for a British Isles cruise, it's important to consider the potential for rain and the need for comfortable footwear to navigate uneven surfaces. Exploring the beautiful and historic sights of the British Isles often involves walking on cobbled streets, rugged coastal paths, and sometimes even venturing into the countryside. To make the most of your cruise and stay comfortable throughout, it's crucial to have the right footwear.

The best type of footwear for a British Isles cruise is a versatile and waterproof option, such as hiking shoes or boots. These types of shoes are designed to provide ample support and grip on uneven surfaces, making them perfect for exploring the varied landscapes of the British Isles. Look for shoes with a sturdy sole and good traction to help prevent slips and falls, especially when walking on wet or slippery surfaces.

Waterproofing is also a crucial feature for footwear on a British Isles cruise. The weather in the British Isles can be unpredictable, and rain is not uncommon. Having waterproof shoes will help keep your feet dry and comfortable throughout your excursions, even if you encounter some unexpected showers.

In addition to waterproofing and grip, comfort is key when choosing footwear for a British Isles cruise. You'll likely be doing a significant amount of walking, so it's essential to have shoes that fit well and offer proper arch and heel support. Investing in a quality pair of shoes that have been broken in prior to your cruise will ensure you can enjoy your time exploring without any discomfort or blisters.

It's also worth considering the specific activities and excursions you plan to participate in during your cruise. If you're planning on hiking along coastal paths or exploring rugged terrain, opt for hiking boots that provide extra ankle support. However, if your activities mainly involve walking around cities and towns, a comfortable pair of walking shoes or sneakers may be more suitable.

When in doubt, it's always a good idea to consult your cruise line or travel agent for specific recommendations tailored to your itinerary and the time of year you'll be visiting. They may have firsthand knowledge of the conditions you're likely to encounter and can give you additional guidance on what type of footwear will be most suitable.

In conclusion, when packing for a British Isles cruise, it's important to prioritize footwear that is versatile, waterproof, and comfortable. Opt for hiking shoes or boots with good traction and waterproofing to navigate the potentially rainy and uneven terrains you may encounter. Make sure to choose a pair of shoes that fit well and provide proper support to minimize discomfort and blisters. By selecting the right footwear, you'll be well-prepared to explore the beautiful sights of the British Isles and make the most of your cruise experience.

Packing Essentials for a Memorable Trip to Hinchinbrook Island

When planning a cruise vacation, it's essential to take into consideration the dress code requirements onboard the ship. Many cruise lines have specific guidelines when it comes to what to wear during formal events and dinner. These dress codes can greatly influence what to pack for your trip.

Formal nights are a common feature on most cruise ships. These nights usually include a formal dinner where guests are expected to dress in their best attire. The dress code for formal nights can vary from ship to ship, but generally, it is more formal than the typical attire worn during the day.

For men, formal attire typically includes a tuxedo or a dark suit paired with a dress shirt and tie. Women are expected to wear an evening gown or a cocktail dress. It's important to note that on some cruise lines, formal attire is strictly enforced, while others may have more lenient guidelines.

In addition to formal nights, many cruise ships have semi-formal or elegant casual nights. These nights are less formal than the formal nights but still require guests to dress up. Men can wear a suit or dress slacks with a collared shirt, while women can opt for a dress or dressy separates.

Aside from these formal and semi-formal events, the dress code during the day is usually casual. It is recommended to pack comfortable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and bathing suits, for activities on the ship or during port visits. It's also a good idea to bring comfortable walking shoes for any excursions or activities ashore.

When packing for a cruise, it's important to check the specific dress code requirements of your chosen cruise line. Some lines are more formal than others, and it's essential to pack accordingly to avoid any embarrassment or inconvenience. Most cruise lines provide detailed information about their dress code on their websites or in the pre-cruise documentation they send to passengers.

It's also worth considering the length of your cruise when planning your wardrobe. If you're going on a longer cruise, you may need to pack a more extensive range of outfits for different events and activities. On the other hand, if you're going on a shorter cruise, you may be able to pack less formal attire and focus more on casual wear.

Here are a few tips to help you pack for a cruise with dress code requirements:

  • Research the dress code: Check the cruise line's website or contact their customer service to find out their specific dress code requirements. This will help you know exactly what to pack and avoid any surprises.
  • Mix and match: Pack versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down. This will allow you to create different outfits with fewer items.
  • Plan for layering: Cruises can have variable temperatures, so it's a good idea to bring layers that can be added or removed depending on the weather.
  • Consider theme nights: Some cruise lines have theme nights, such as tropical or 80s night. If your cruise has these, pack accordingly to participate and enjoy the festivities.
  • Don't forget the accessories: Accessories can elevate any outfit, so don't forget to pack statement jewelry, scarves, or ties to complete your look.

Ultimately, the dress code requirements onboard a cruise ship can greatly influence what to pack for your trip. By doing some research and planning ahead, you can ensure that you have the appropriate attire for any formal events and enjoy your cruise to the fullest.

Essential Packing List for an Unforgettable Antarctica Cruise Adventure

When embarking on a British Isles cruise, there are certain items and accessories that can greatly enhance your experience. From practical items to unique accessories, being prepared for all weather conditions and having the right equipment can make your trip more enjoyable and memorable.

One essential item that can come in handy during a British Isles cruise is a good pair of binoculars. The British Isles are known for their stunning coastal landscapes, rugged cliffs, and diverse wildlife. With a pair of binoculars, you can get a closer look at the seabird colonies, spot dolphins, or even catch a glimpse of a seal lounging on a rocky beach. Binoculars allow you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the British Isles and make the most of your time spent at sea.

Another item that is worth packing for a British Isles cruise is a high-quality raingear. The weather in this region can be unpredictable, with frequent rain showers and quick changes in temperature. Having a waterproof jacket, pants, and boots can protect you from the elements and keep you dry and comfortable while exploring onshore. It is recommended to invest in a breathable and durable raingear that can withstand the windy and rainy conditions commonly found in the British Isles.

In addition to practical items, there are also some unique accessories that can enhance your experience on a British Isles cruise. One such accessory is a camera with a good zoom lens. The British Isles offer breathtaking landscapes and picturesque villages that are perfect for capturing memorable photographs. From the colorful houses of Portree to the majestic cliffs of the Giant's Causeway, having a camera with a zoom lens allows you to capture the details and beauty of these scenic locations.

Another accessory that can enhance your cruise experience is a good guidebook or travel guide specific to the British Isles. These guidebooks provide valuable information about the history, culture, and attractions of the various ports of call. They can help you plan your excursions, learn about the local customs, and discover hidden gems that may not be mentioned in mainstream travel guides. Having a guidebook on hand can enrich your journey and make you more knowledgeable about the places you visit.

Lastly, don't forget to pack some comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots. The British Isles offer numerous opportunities for hiking, whether it's exploring the lush gardens of the Isle of Mull or trekking along the stunning coastal paths of Cornwall. Having proper footwear is essential to ensure your comfort and safety while enjoying the outdoor activities available during your cruise.

In conclusion, there are several items and accessories that can enhance the experience of a British Isles cruise. From practical items like binoculars and rain gear to unique accessories like a camera with a zoom lens or a travel guidebook, being prepared and equipped can greatly enhance your enjoyment of the stunning landscapes, wildlife, and cultural attractions that the British Isles have to offer. So, pack wisely and get ready for a memorable cruise experience in the British Isles.

Be sure to pack travel-sized containers or purchase travel-sized toiletries to comply with airline regulations and save space in your luggage.

In addition to the essentials, there are a few items you may want to consider packing for your time on the cruise ship. First, consider bringing a power strip or extension cord, as there may be a limited number of outlets in your cabin. Additionally, pack a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. Don't forget to bring any necessary documents, such as your passport or identification, as well as any medications or medical supplies you may need during the cruise.

Packing for a British Isles Cruise

Normally when you think about cruising, you think about some tropical destination, hot sun, blue water and lots of activities. But cruises are more than just visiting tropical locations! There are cruises to almost any destination around the world.

Since we discovered that we love cruising as a way of travel when we went to the Mediterranean in 2016, we were on the look out for a cruise to the British Isles which was the next foreign destination on our travel list.

But packing for the British Isles is very different than packing for a tropical destination. Even though we traveled in June, our suitcases didn’t look like we were going on a summer vacation.

The Basics:

When you’re traveling, there are some basics that you’re always going to take with you. Items like clothing, proper shoes, toiletries, swimming suit, medication, electronics, etc.

When you’re on  any  cruise it is also nice to bring extra swimming suits, laundry supplies (if you’re  going on a long cruise which is what we like to do), fancy clothes for formal nights at dinner, and seasick medication like dramamine or Sea Bands (these worked great for me since I was pregnant on this cruise and couldn’t take dramamine).

British Isles Specific:

There are a few things that we are glad we packed specifically for this trip. The weather in the British Isles in the summer time is actually nice: not too hot, not too cold, but it can get quite chilly and quite toasty. We were in London on the 3 hottest days of the year and were in Scotland on some of the rainiest and coldest days of the spring/summer.  So we had lots of variables to pack for.

You will want to make sure you bring clothes that you can layer, layer, layer! The weather can change so quickly that it is nice to have multiple layers in order to get to the right temperature for your body. I made sure to pack a variety of t-shirts, mostly short sleeved, but I did bring one long sleeved t-shirt as well. I also brought a button up chambray shirt and 2 cardigans that were nice to layer with my t-shirts. I also brought a packable vest that could fold up small but was nice to add as an extra layer.

Make sure to take a somewhat heavy jacket, not necessarily a coat (although we did see people wearing coats while we were out), but something that is heavy enough to keep you warm but small enough that it doesn’t take up a lot of room in your suit case. This is similar to the one that I own and took on our trip (although I got mine at an Oakley Outlet on sale). I love it because it is warm material without being bulky. It has a great hood and it is water repellant (it can get soaked in a downpour, but it good at repelling mist). It also has really good pockets.

Rain Jackets

Ben and I both purchased rain jackets for this trip because we knew that it could be raining a lot. ( Ben’s is here and mine is here .) We just got cheap ones from Amazon . They weren’t the highest quality, but they kept us fairly dry when we needed to be. Mine wasn’t super warm which I actually liked because sometimes the rain made it so humid and hot that I didn’t want to be warm and it actually didn’t do that great in downpours. But it folded up super small and could easily fit in my small backpack.

Beanie and Gloves

We didn’t take beanies and gloves but we wished we had! Especially on our days in Scotland, it rained a lot and we got very cold. Beanies and gloves don’t take up a lot of room and we wished we had brought them.

We always try to travel lighter with our shoes (as in, we don’t take many pairs and those that we do take try to serve multiple purposes.) For this trip we packed our Chacos which we were able to wear some days when it was warmer. We also each packed tennis shoes (for exercise, rainy days, and to give our feet a break from Chacos) and formal shoes for the formal dinners (Ben packed regular dress shoes and I packed a pair of flat, semi casual sandals). I also brought my pair of TOMS because I like how they feel on my feet (very light weight) and how they cover my toes while still being breathable.

Stroll through the Botanic Gardens and observe the park’s Victorian heritage. Or experience true country living in the cottage of a breadmaker, where you can make fresh-baked goods to accompany your afternoon cup of tea.

In a land where fable and fact blend to become folklore, Cork is a beacon of romance among Ireland’s iconic cities. On a British Isles cruise, see the city’s emerald terrains reflected in the lakes of Killarney National Park. Savor an Irish coffee in the 18th-century village of Blarney. Or enjoy a lunch on the hills of Cashel, with the Romanesque architecture of St. Patrick’s Rock as your backdrop.

Experience the best of Irish hospitality on a British Isles cruise to Dublin. Stop by a pub and hear stories of the city from the people who call it home. Tour Trinity College, one of the world’s most famous universities. Or discover the secrets to brewing a stout at the Guinness Storehouse, and sip on a complimentary glass just a few hundred yards from where it’s made.

With centuries of cultural change, Edinburgh is home to a diverse landscape of design. Cruise the British Isles and follow the Royal Mile to the top of Castle Rock, where Edinburgh Castle sits overlooking the city below. Marvel at the expansive collection of artwork in the Royal Yacht Britannia, or shop for souvenirs on Princes Street while admiring the Georgian architecture of New Town.

Cruise the British Isles to investigate the mysteries of Stonehenge, and learn about the grape-to-glass process at Langham Wine Estate. Or see hundreds of baby swans parading through the grounds of the 600-year-old Abbotsbury Swannery.

Why Cruise the British Isles

The British pubs, Parisian artwork and Irish castles invite you to live like royalty.

Storied and splendid

Castles are the emblem of these regions. Between the chandeliers and tapestries, step into luxury when you visit the British Isles. Cruise to Dublin and parade through the 13th-century halls of the city’s fortress. Experience the grandeur of Urquhart Castle, and search for legendary ghosts in Glamis Castle. Or visit Edinburgh Castle, where kings, queens and nobles once lived and medieval secrets continue to linger.

Melodies of memories past

As the birthplace of many music icons, the British Isles invite you to sing, dance and raise a glass to songs played around the globe. Visit Liverpool to walk in the footsteps of a beloved boyband, and head to a local pub to hear the boys at their best. Cruise the British Isles for an evening of Irish song and dance in Dublin, or watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo assemble bands, bagpipes and drums for a soul-stirring show.

Globally recognized, historically prominent

The British Isles are a mecca of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Cruise from Southampton to Liverpool, and walk along the Royal Albert Dock, the first structure in Britain to be constructed without wood. Shop along Princes Street in Edinburgh’s New Town. Or travel to Brú na Bóinne in Dublin and get up close to Europe’s largest collection of prehistoric megalithic art.

Raise a glass to adventure

In lands famous for their stouts and ales, pubs are the cornerstone of tradition. Cruise the British Isles and step into age-old establishments that are bustling with spirit. In Dublin, get a taste of true pub “craic” — an Irish term that equates to an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and good company. With festive music playing in the background, sip on world-famous beers that originated nearby while sharing a laugh with locals.

Natural Phenomena

Unexplainable yet undeniable

Discern fact versus fiction on a British Isles cruise, where mysteries and mythologies abound. In Portland, learn about the 5,000-year-old stone circle that displays an advanced understanding of arithmetic and astrology. On itineraries that sail to Cork, search the sea for the Bioluminescence beams created by the region’s gleaming plankton. Or hunt for Invergordon’s legendary monster in the waters of Loch Ness.

Museums & Art Galleries

Ancient artifacts and acclaimed artwork

No cruise to the British Isles is complete without a visit to Paris. See “Venus de Milo” and da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” or tour Notre Dame, a work of art in and of itself. Visit the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, where interactive galleries invite you to explore. Those departing from London can also stop by the Victoria and Albert Museum which houses over two million artifacts.

British Isles excursions

Our award-winning shore excursions bring you up close to beautiful coasts, monuments and historical wonderlands. On a British Isles cruise, snap photos of Dublin’s iconic sites — like St. Stephen’s Green and Christ Church Cathedral — and taste a world-famous stout at the Guinness Storehouse. Or ride through quaint villages in Belfast on your way to Giant’s Causeway, and revel in the natural structures that surround you.

Local connections

When you cruise the British Isles, meet the diverse personalities that call these lands home. In Dublin, head to a countryside bed and breakfast where a local chef invites you to savor homemade scones and jam. Or set out on a day-long tour in Cork with your loved ones and visit the city’s most iconic sites. Stop by the 18th-century village of Kinsale, and then continue to Blarney Castle, where legends and landmarks await.

More ashore

Enjoy even more history and culture during your British Isles cruise with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Visit several pubs during an evening tour, and hear stories from locals over a pint of local brew. Savor a traditional Scottish dinner in Edinburgh, and see the Royal Mile illuminated by street lamps and the evening light. Or explore Dublin by night, and indulge in Irish entertainment.

Cruise Packing List

Wondering what to bring on a cruise?  I’m here to give you a list of all of the things you need on a British Isles cruise with a printable packing list!

What to pack for a cruise to the British Isles

This post is in partnership with Princess Cruises . I am beyond thrilled to work with a company I absolutely love!

The most overwhelming thing about going on a cruise for me is what to pack.  Since I’ve been on a few cruises now, there are some things that will always be included in my luggage but each cruise is unique.  Packing for Alaska was different than packing for the British Isles .  Although I ended up needing similar things for both cruises.  But going to the Caribbean in the summer versus Alaska in the fall?  Very different cruises. I’m going to tell you everything I brought, what I wish I would’ve brought and have a printable packing list for you to use at the end.

What to pack for a cruise

Because weather in the British Isles can be somewhat unpredictable, I had a list of things I needed leading up to the trip but kept checking on weather reports to see how I should adapt my list.  All in all, we ended up having pretty great weather (it was originally supposed to rain for most of the trip) and I mostly brought what I needed.

What to pack for a cruise to the British Isles - in Ireland

At Stromness, Orkney Islands, Scotland

Just like Alaska, most articles I read and people that I talked to told me to bring lots of layers.  I brought layers but I could’ve been a little smarter about the layers that I brought.  On this cruise we went from port to port with excursions that ranged from shopping and walking along the city to a little bit of a longer walk along the Giants Causeway.  Because of that, I felt like I needed to bring so many different types of clothes.

What to pack for a British Isles Cruise - at the Giants Causeway

At the Giants Causeway, Northern Ireland

Here is my must haves list that I bought and used throughout the cruise:

  • Nike tennis shoes – similar to these , I wore them the most throughout the cruise
  • Sorel Boots – I cannot sing the praises of these boots enough.  I loved them in Alaska but didn’t end up wearing these much on this trip because I mainly wore my tennis shoes.
  • Tieks – I brought along my camel colored ones because they’re neutral and go with a lot
  • Some cute beanies
  • Warm socks and athletic socks – 10 pair
  • Long sleeved shirts – 5
  • Short sleeved shirts – 4
  • Sweat pants -2
  • Fleece lined leggings
  • Athleta hybrid tights – totally lucked out on these being on sale.  I LOVE THESE!
  • American Giant ponte joggers
  • Every day cap in black
  • Work out clothes – for excursions or if you plan to work out
  • Pajamas – 2 or 3 pair
  • A couple of jackets – I had a North Face one that was great and I got the green one that I wore a lot from Stitch Fix
  • Nice clothes for dress up nights – (2) – mix and match if you can!
  • 1 pair of nice shoes to wear for the dress up nights
  • 1 big suitcase + cruise luggage tags
  • Umbrella for the rain
  • Magnetic clips to hang stuff on the walls
  • Laundry detergent – because this cruise is 12 days, we did laundry and I brought pods to make it easier
  • Wrinkle release spray – there aren’t irons in the room (though you can go to the laundry room and iron in there), this is a convenience
  • laundry bag  – the rooms aren’t big and having a spot for all of the dirty laundry to go makes it easier to stay organized

And while these aren’t mandatory, my Bose noise cancelling headphones are my favorite travel item.  I’m obsessed!

What to pack for a cruise to the British Isles - at Loch Ness, Scotland

At Loch Less looking for Nessie

What I wish I had packed in addition to what I brought:

  • a nice rain jacket – I got one in Edinburgh towards the end of our trip and wish I had it throughout!
  • more jeans and/or sweats – I brought a few pairs but felt like I was wearing the same thing a lot
  • A heavier jacket – I wasn’t really cold too often but I should’ve brought a more substantial jacket.
  • My bff Taryn brought a puffer vest that she wore throughout the trip (pictured above) and I wish I had one!

Because I went on an Alaskan cruise, I knew that there were a few dress up nights on this trip.   There is a wide range of what people wear on dress up nights.  You will see people looking like they are going to the Academy Awards and then people wearing nice pantsuits.  My vote is to wear something that you feel like you look good in and feel comfortable.  This is what I wore on one of the dress up nights:

Please post your packing list for 12 night British Isles cruise

Cool Cruiser

I'm leaving in a few days and I'm really confused on if I'm brining enough warm clothes. I have a mix of 1/2 short sleeve shirts and 1/2 long sleeve but they aren't heavy ones. I have two zip up cardigans/hoodies packed. A lightweight jacket and I keep thinking I should have a slightly heavier jacket (I have one with lining that removes to make it more lightweight). I have a couple capri pants (calf length) and a couple longer pants. I keep wondering if the capri are warm enough. Then a lot of my nighttime things are short sleeve with skirts. I am brining a wrap though and a blk cardigan for night.

Any packing lists or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds reasonable to me - very much like the clothing I'm planning to take for a Baltic cruise at the end of this month. (Likely to be cooler then as it's later and further north for most of the time.)

The weather here at the moment is very mild - but this year has been marked by lots and lots of rain too. When the sun is out, it can also be very warm and we have hardly needed a light jumper/fleece for some time. Make sure you include waterproof/umbrella though! We usually take a light-weight waterproof (the sort you can roll up easily) for wet weather, but it also comes in useful if there is a cooling wind providing a welcome extra layer.

We live in the south which is milder than further north and most people here are wearing crops/capris/shorts etc just now - temps have been around 20C for a few weeks but there have been strong winds and a mix of hot sunny days too. So you do need to be flexible and prepared for everything. Layering is probably the key - our weather is notoriously unpredictable!

One thing I would suggest though is give a little thought to footwear especially in case of wet weather - I usually take two pairs of walking flats but as they're not waterproof I have an alternative pair to allow a 'drying out' day if necessary.

Evening wear sounds ok too - should be warm enough indoors - and a wrap will be useful if the A.C. is a bit chilly in the restaurants etc.

Hope you have a great trip.

thank you for the feedback. That helps to hear what others are wearing in the area. I do have a disposable pancho packed and an umbrella. And my jacket is a good one for rain. That's a good idea about the extra pair of walking shoes. Thanks again!

We are just back on sunday from an 11 night cruise. Quite cold in places off North Scotland, once 0nly 8c !!. Glad I took my Antarctic jacket LOL. Still had a good cruise with some wet weather & one missed port, superb day in Kirkwall Orkneys when Edinburgh & most of rest of nth UK was getting flooded. Have a good trip.

We were on the Grand Princess a couple weeks ago for the British Isles cruise. (One of our favorite cruises to date!) I wore Dockers for the entire trip for shore excursions. Capri pants would work on warmer days. Tops were short or 3/4 sleeves. I got good use out of a light weight rain jacket with hood. As for evenings, the same attire goes as for any other cruise. I resisted the urge to over pack but still brought a few too many things. Princess has a $20 per bag laundry deal that is very useful and worth every penny. I didn’t spend valuable vacation time doing laundry.

Here's a basic list of things I needed:

5 pair Dockers

6 short sleeve tops

3 3/4 sleeve tops

Formal attire & black shoes

4 Dress pants & tops

1 light weight rain jacket

1 pair walking shoes

KCcruisin07

I think you could go to http://www.weather.com and look up the weather for a couple of your ports. I tend to run cold near or on the ocean, and when we have gone on cruises, I have taken either a thermal long sleeved shirt and long johns, one heavy pullover or sweater, and a thin but warm coat and a windbreaker to wear on deck. We walk on deck a lot at night, and I need to be comfortable. (My friend who travels a lot just takes a fleece jacket.)

Also I carry a clear poncho that folds into nothing when we go into port. Sometimes rain comes up unexpectedly, and I would rather not use an umbrella unless it pours. It seems like I take a lot, but I somehow I stay within the weight limit.

Bon Voyage! Have a wonderful cruise. I hope to go to the British Isles next summer!

I live and travel around the UK and I can definitely tell you that for most of us the summer - what summer? - is over! Just also got back from a Med Cruise and instead of the intense heat and airlessness of Rome I'm back to damp and fresh air! It's quite nice actually! Like others have said, do take rain jackets - maybe a couple - and ensure they'll cover you - think longer length. Also pack some good walking shoes, waterproof if you can get them! Do pack some sweaters also and I hope you enjoy your cruise around these waters!!!

What kind of shoes do you mean?

Since we are planning ahead is there less rain in a certain month? We have "monsoons" here in August, and then it cools down a little. (But they are normally in the afternoon.) Is the rain there all day or part of the day? I know it is beautiful in the pictures!

I don't mean wellies or serious rain shoes / boots. You should be ok without these!;) I, for example, have some walking shoes which have a waterproof exterior. Water just bounces off them and they keep my feet inside very dry! I'm sure a sensible pair of flat, covered shoes will be fine! It's impossible to predict the rain for certain months but we have had bad times in the last couple of years. This shouldn't put you off though. I would say that June is a good month but last year we had floods in various parts of the UK at that time just like we've recently had floods in Northern Ireland. I'm sure you'll be fine and weatherproof either way whenever you visit the UK as long as you can find a nice cosy cabin on the ship to return to. :p All the best!

I know: I see beautiful pictures and I haven't been reading of problems with the weather, so there has to be some sunny weather. It is always good to know and to be prepared. I think I'll ask our local shoe store about waterproofing walking shoes with a spray.
