While everyone is social distancing, closing ranks and donning masks while they shop, life can seem somewhat surreal to the senses. Yet, through all of the chaos, one thing is constant, music brings us together. Now, on the 40th Anniversary of the landmark, Los Angeles , and 35 years since the original band have released an album – X , one of the greatest Punk Rock bands in music history, releases ALPHABETLAND now. Listen or Buy . The original foursome - Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake have now made the album available for fans to purchase and by adapting to this moment, X continues to embody the same spirit they did when they began in 1977.

“ When your heart is broken you think every song is about that. These songs were written in the last 18 months & it blows my mind how timely they are,” explained John Doe. “We all want our family, friends & fans to hear our records as soon as it’s finished. This time we could do that. Thanks to Fat Possum & our audience. ”

Formed in 1977, X quickly established themselves as one of the best bands in the first wave of LA's flourishing punk scene; becoming legendary leaders of a punk generation. Featuring vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom, and drummer DJ Bonebrake, their debut 45 was released on the seminal Dangerhouse label in 1978, followed by seven studio albums released from 1980-1993.

Over the years, the band has released several critically acclaimed albums, topped the musical charts with regularity and performed their iconic hits on top television shows such as Letterman and American Bandstand. X's first two studio albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift are ranked by Rolling Stone among the top 500 greatest albums of all time.

The band continues to tour with the original line-up fully intact. In 2017, the band celebrated their 40th year anniversary in music with a Grammy Museum exhibit opening, a Proclamation from the City of Los Angeles and being honored at a Los Angeles Dodgers game where Exene threw out the first pitch and John Doe sang the National Anthem.

In 2019 X reissued and remastered their first four classic albums via their collaboration with Fat Possum Records. Los Angeles (1980), Wild Gift (1981), Under The Big Black Sun (1982) and More Fun In The New World (1983). In 2020, X celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Los Angeles and celebrated with a surprise release of Alphabetland, their first new studio album, featuring the original line-up, in 35 years.

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Jon Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., in 2013. David Bergman/Hulu hide caption

Jon Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., in 2013.

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Jon Bon Jovi was interviewed for Thank You, Goodnight .

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

x band tour

Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in Thank You, Goodnight Disney/Hulu hide caption

Former Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in Thank You, Goodnight

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Alec John Such, a founding member of Bon Jovi, dies at 70

Alec John Such, a founding member of Bon Jovi, dies at 70

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

x band tour

Jon Bon Jovi with guitarist Phil X. Disney/Hulu hide caption

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

The audio and digital versions of this story were edited by Jennifer Vanasco .

Linkin Park considering reunion tour with new female vocalist, reports say

FILE -- Chester Bennington, left, and Mike Shinoda of the musical group Linkin Park perform on...

(Gray News) - Linkin Park is reportedly considering reuniting with a female vocalist in place of late frontman Chester Bennington.

Billboard reports three members of the group are considering a 2025 reunion tour with a female vocalist to succeed Bennington.

Following Bennington’s death in July 2017, Linkin Park has been on a hiatus.

The band’s surviving members have only performed together at a tribute concert honoring Bennington in October 2017.

Earlier this year, the group released a new greatest hits album “Papercuts,” celebrating the 20th anniversary of their “Meteora” album.

“Papercuts” quickly grabbed the No. 1 spot for hard rock albums after its release, according to Billboard . It also featured a new song titled “Friendly Fire” featuring never-before-heard vocals from Bennington.

Since Bennington’s death, there have been some discussions on how to continue the band. The group’s co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda has said when there is something to share about the band’s plans, he will.

Regarding the latest rumors, booking agency WME has been reportedly taking offers for a Linkin Park tour along with headlining festival dates featuring Shinoda, Brad Delson and Dave Farrell.

Billboard reports that a source said the band is hoping to find a female vocalist to front the reunited band.

Earlier this month, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee shared with iHeartRadio Canada that Linkin Park fans have said they would want her to join the band, but the group had not contacted her yet for any such gig.

“I have not been contacted or anything like that. But [I’m a] huge fan, and our fanbases are a lot of the same people,” she said. “They should ask me about that. I don’t have a ton of free time, but I might do it part-time.”

Linkin Park is one of the most successful rock groups from the 2000s, having sold nearly 30 million albums, according to Nielsen Music .

Music Monday: Stones start tour, Swift album debuts at No. 1

(CNN and The Associated Press) - Taylor Swift is once again outdoing herself. Her latest double album, “The Tortured Poets Department” has debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s 200 chart.

The music has racked up more than 2.6 million sales in its first week. It is Swift’s 14th album to reach No. 1.

Swift thanked fans on Instagram. She told them her mind is blown and thanked them for embracing her new music. Swift is now tied with Jay-Z for the second most No. 1 albums by a recording artist. The Beatles are No. 1 with 19 top albums.

Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones.

What many believe to be the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

The Rolling Stones announced Tuesday they're returning to Atlanta in 2024.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album,  “Hackney Diamonds,”  the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday’s 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single  “Angry.”  They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimmer Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021  death of drummer Charlie Watts , the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs.

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

Slipknot Announce Knotfest 2024 and 25th Anniversary Tour

By Nina Corcoran

Slipknot

Slipknot have announced a 2024 North American tour that takes place this summer. The nu metal band is also returning to its hometown music festival Knotfest Iowa . This year marks the 25th anniversary of Slipknot’s self-titled album, and their festival set is billed as “a unique set drawing heavily from their 1999 debut.” See Slipknot’s full list of tour dates below.

“Every time I’ve walked onstage, it’s never been about how many people have been there because my culture, the maggots, always show up,” founding member Shawn “Clown” Crahan said in a statement. “But as we’ve grown as a band, we have had fewer and fewer of those intimate, personal moments, trading them for massive ones. So we’re gonna make it more personal on the anniversary.… Just get ready to have your face kicked in, because we just do what we do, spread that maggot culture—that disease. And you’ve been infected.”

Dubbed the Here Comes the Pain Tour, Slipknot begin their run in Noblesville, Indiana, on August 6 and perform in Baltimore, New York, Toronto, Austin, and more cities. While the North American leg ends at Knotfest Iowa in Des Moines on September 21, Slipknot have plenty more dates scheduled in Europe on through to the end of 2024. Opening select shows in North America are Knocked Loose, Orbit Culture, and Vended.

The Rolling Stones review — the Hackney Diamonds tour starts with a bang

Challenge yourself with today’s puzzles.

The Rolling Stones arguably invented arena rock. But in a stadium named after an electricity company, amid the smell of corporate sponsor beer, defrosted chicken strips and VIP lounge complimentary cocktails, what space could there be for the well-dressed anarchism of those ageing satanic majesties? Nonetheless, as soon as Keith Richards cranked up essential curtain-raiser Start Me Up , it was the Stones in their sardonic glory.

The opening date of the band’s Hackney Diamonds tour marked the upcoming 60th anniversary of their first US tour, and of their first Texas show. “That was my first rodeo,” announced a grinning Mick Jagger. Ever the consummate frontman, he did the traditional callouts to the Lone Star State’s cities: Austin, Dallas, Cut and Shoot (the latter eliciting
