This is a self made tour without governmental support but with the heart and energy of young historians who are very actively reflecting on their recent history and ongoing struggle as a young country. Contains lots of personal experiences but always reminds you about the importance of different perspectives and understanding for people who see things differently. We have seen so many great free city walking tours but this was one of the best (if not the best) for sure! Read more Written May 7, 2024
  • akaneak 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best history tour! This tour was extraordinary. It exceeded my expectations beyond measures. Vid was not only extremely knowledgeable about the history and the topics related to war (since he has two master's degrees!), but also provided us with numerous personal stories of his own and his parents/grandparents who had experienced the war. As this was the last leg of my trip to the former Yugoslavian countries, all the pieces came together at the very end and it truly was a remarkable experience for me. Vid also explained everything from many different perspectives and stayed very objective/neutral, which I really appreciated. In a sense, I felt like I was back at university taking a history lesson (in a good way) with the coolest profesor! Not to mention, we got to see the tunnel and bunker used during the war which was not accessible to the public. 1000% recommend taking this tour!! Read more Written May 6, 2024

How to Spend a Perfect Night in Zagreb

zagreb night tour

Croatia’s capital is a city for wanderers. Arch your neck towards the skies, and you will see domes, spires, and red rooftops. As the sun begins to set in Zagreb , all this architectural glory is set off by dipping pastel hues, all the way until darkness falls. If you’re looking for things to do in Zagreb at night, you’ve come to the right place!

Nightlife in Zagreb is about discovering local traditions, dinner and a show, nightcaps in bars playing songs that soothe the soul, or partying streetside. Discover a perfect night in Zagreb.

Explore the old quarter on foot

One of the best ways to discover Zagreb at night is by wandering around the city and experiencing the liveliness of this city on foot. Renowned for its music, cafes, bars, and pubs, the good times flow out onto the streets where even passersby can enjoy Zagreb’s colourful ambience . Many of the streets in the centre of the city transform into alfresco hangouts, especially during the summer. In the winter months, around the holidays you can discover a charming market that takes over almost every nook and cranny in the city.

Stroll around Tkalčićeva

If you want to experience Zagreb’s romantic café culture and street side pub scene, then head north of the city’s main square, and you’ll find Tkalčićeva Street. This famous vibrant strip is filled with small boutiques, traditional stores, and places to eat and drink, making it the perfect day-to-night destination. The old houses and paths will add a fairytale aspect to the proceedings. For a soulful, jazzy affair, get yourself to Melin Café or Booze and Blues Bar.

Visit the Strossmayer Promenade

For a perfect night in Zagreb, go and watch the sunset on Strossmayer Promenade. After this, you’ll be in the best position to enjoy the lively atmosphere in this part of town. Depending on the season, you’ll find many different things to do, but it’s the most fun in the summer, where this promenade turns into a lively outdoor hangout.

Take a peek at Zagreb; 360°

For 360-degree visuals and to see the city flickering with picturesque bright lights, head over to the Zagreb’s observation deck . It’s touristy, but it’s one of those activities that even the cynics won’t mind. It’s a great way to see the city, from the old buildings to the glittery skyscrapers, the nighttime sky only brings out Zagreb’s charm.

Enjoy a beer at Pod Starim Krovovima

A classic watering hole, Pod Starim Krovovima is Zagreb’s oldest tavern. Located in a 14th-century building in Upper Town, with artsy patrons like writers and actors, it’s one of the city’s unique late-nite experiences. Wooden panels and tinder beams add the necessary details for an authentic old-school experience. Art exhibitions and impromptu concerts and dance parties make it the perfect spot to linger over Vukovarsko beer and wine.

Take in a show at the Croatian National Theatre

If you are looking for a different kind of cultural experience why not visit the Croatian National Theatre? This prestigious space teeming with old-world glamour is where you can see classic plays written by the greats, beautiful ballet performances, and amazing operas. It’s a unique way to enjoy the local nightlife while you’re visiting Zagreb, and what could be more magical or traditional than doing dinner and a show?

Expand your mind at the Arthouse Cinema

For another alternative to bars and partying, why not visit one of the city’s arthouse cinemas? Kino Europa is a 1920s cinema with a classic cafe-cum-bar that frequently screens arthouse movies.

If you’re looking for a magical night out, Zagreb more than delivers on culture, entertainment, and, yes, that nightlife Croatia is famous around the world for. With a little know-how, you can make your night in Zagreb an absolute dream!

Zagreb nightlife guide

Zagreb nightlife is arguably the best in the country. Discover the finest venues for live music, clubbing and more

Vienna? Budapest? Ljubljana? Zagreb nightlife is matched by few places owing to the range of regular live music on offer – and for the sheer number of venues to stage it. Zagreb is also known for its music bars – places such as  SPUNK  transform into small clubs as the night wears on, with occasional live acts too. Read on for our list of the best places to dance the night away.

The best nightlife in Zagreb

SPUNK

  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Nightlife venues
  • price 2 of 4

Located under the gleaming glass-and-steel National University Library (NSK), it's a coffee-break bar for students during the day, and an alternative music bar serving discerning bohos by night. The interior features comic-book murals by Igor Hofbauer, vintage movie posters and twinkling ceiling panels that look like the sky at night. Indie and cover bands occasionally squeeze into the corner of the room; DJs spin garage-rock discs at weekends.

AKC Medika

  • price 1 of 4

Still going strong despite the municipal authorities' threat to dramatically raise the rent, this shrine to all things alternative grew out of Zagreb’s anarchist movement and is still run as a non-profit-making collective. A courtyard decorated by some of Zagreb’s best street artists has a café-bar on one side, and a concert venue-cum-club space on the other. Events range from anarcho-punk gigs to dub reggae DJs and cutting-edge dance music, with all kinds of other styles thrown in for good measure. Visual arts association Otomptom throw impromptu film evenings screening animation and shorts. Popular with a broad spectrum of Zagreb’s club-hungry youth, Medika is much more than just a gathering point for the grungey underground.

Aquarius

  • Out of the Centre

The one club on the Jarun lakeside to be open 12 months a year, this 2,000-capacity, two-floor venue, which opened in 1992, is still ahead of the field. This is largely due to its commitment to mixing danceable beats with innovative DJ styles, augmented by a regular agenda of live music (with international rock and world music predominating) and Dj sets by international big names. The two floors – Aquarius 1 and 2 – pump different sounds but do, on occasion, come together. Friday might feature anything from Goa Trance to RnB (check the website), while Saturdays usually see an eclectic mixture of cutting-edge House and electro presided over by chief resident DJ Martyn Negro. In summer, Aquarius opens its beach branch at Zrće at Novalja on Pag. Entrance fees range from 30kn for club nights to 120kn for gigs.

Boogaloo

A 15-minute walk south of the train station, Boogaloo is a 1,500-capacity DJ club and live venue, opened in a spacious former cinema and cultural centre –  scene of seminal shows by Laibach and Einstürzende Neubauten in the mid-1980s. Expect a varied schedule of retro parties, house or techno DJs, and live international metal acts.

Bunga Bunga

Bunga Bunga

  • Bars and pubs

One of the flashiest of the currently fashionable nightspots, Bunga Bunga is an essential night out for connoisseurs of Croatian popular culture. Expect Croatian and Balkan dance-pop, dancing girls, and a shake of local celebrities.

Funk Club

  • Late-night bars

A rather tatty-looking café-bar by day, by night the Funk Club is lively indeed. Spontaneous interaction sparks around a horseshoe-shaped bar, while thumping beats come up from the cellar. Down a spiral staircase, in a small plain basement with stone-vaulted ceilings, DJs spin catchy tunes (house, jazz and broken beats) to a dance-happy crowd Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Gallery

One of the snazziest clubs by Lake Jarun – and in Zagreb – Gallery has hosted DJs such as Ian Pooley, David Guetta and Martin Solveig. The interior is funky-chic and filled with chandeliers and candelabras. Big doormen keep a tight control on numbers and enforce a dress code (no trainers or jogging suits, please). Once you pass the face test, you get to rub shoulders with local bling, actors, sports stars and the odd random hipster thrown in. Fridays are devoted to hip hop and r'n'b, while Saturdays are dedicated to house. The wooden terrace is a boon. If you're in, it's fun. Typical cover charge: 30kn for women and 40kn for men.

Hangar Club

Hangar Club

One of the most enjoyable places for mainstream weekend clubbing with a no-nonsense, dancefloor-filling DJ style, a lighting rig that must have cost a few bob, and a fair share of wacky party ideas. Hangar is an apt description for the large, minimally decorated main room. A centrally located main bar and relative absence of tables and alcoves gets everybody mingling and dancing.

Hard Place

  • 3 out of 5 stars
  • Rock and indie

Fancy a night out at the National Library? The row of retail units that runs along the base of the library building is increasingly being taken over by music bars, of which alternative hangout SPUNK is the most famous. Previously located near Kvatrić Market, the Hard Place rock club moved here in early 2014. It has an excellent live music performance space at the back for local bands (expect hard rock/indie/pop-rock covers), a two-level bar area at the front, and a scattering of outdoor seating.

Jabuka

Everyone knows the Apple, where a generation of thirty- and fortysomethings danced and found romance a decade or two ago. This grungy Tuškanac club, set in one of the nicest neighbourhoods in town, has a worn-in feel and still offers the rocking sounds of the 1980s in its modest dance room with multi-coloured spotlights. DJs mix in R&B and soulful tunes with New Wave, Eighties and other retro genres as a mixed-age crowd jiggle and writhe about the bar and the expansive back courtyard. There are occasional live bands and half-litres of domestic beer run at 16kn. It’s a beautiful 20-minute walk due north from the centre or a quick taxi.

Old Zagreb Walking Tour Provided by Domagoj

Zagreb, a city rich in history, culture, art & beauty

Zagreb has a lot to see and do. The Croatian capital's cityscape consists of Medieval, neo-gothic & Austro-Hungarian influences, reflecting an ancient legacy stretching back to Roman times. Strolling from the thousand year old Upper Town district of Gornji grad, in view of the magnificent Cathedral Spires reaching skyward, down tree-lined Strossmayer Promenade to the cobbled streets of Donji Grad, the 19th Century lower town, all around are impressive sights such as the Croatian Parliament, Presidential palaces, galleries, museums, & theatres.

Freetour.com recommends doing a free walking tour in Zagreb for the best insight to a vast & fascinating history, including Medieval conflict, a devastating 17th Century fire, a very recent war of independence, key sights like Stone gate, Krvavi Most - the bloody bridge & 13th Century Lotrščak tower.

After exploring Zagreb with a charming local guide, you can relax in one of many beautiful places, like Maksimir park, indulge in some shopping on Ilica, a coffee in Ban Jelačić Square, view art in the Art Pavillion & works from Manet, Rembrandt & Renoir in Mimara museum. Zagreb's nightlife is lively & atmospheric with a number of clubs & pubs to explore. The many bars, restaurants & cafes of Tkalčićeva street host a vibrant local social-life & culture enjoyed by both young & old which should not be missed when in this wonderful city.

St.Mark's Church as seen from the side in Zagreb Croatia, a must-see when spending one day in Zagreb itinerary

The Perfect One Day in Zagreb Itinerary

Commit to spending one day in Zagreb, Croatia’s lovable capital city, and you just might find yourself enchanted.

Though Zagreb is home to one of the biggest airports in the country and plenty of travelers pass through, far fewer travelers stop to appreciate this beautiful city, instead making a beeline for the coast or national parks that Croatia is known for.

And while we deeply understand the temptation–it took us four visits to Croatia before we properly appreciated Zagreb–it really is worth slowing down your busy trip to Croatia just enough to enjoy a day in Zagreb.

Colorful churches, gorgeous architecture, interesting history, tasty food–Zagreb has a little bit of everything, and it’s worth recognizing as a destination in its own right, even in a country packed with as many beautiful places as Croatia.

Here’s how to make the most of this colorful, vibrant city when exploring Zagreb in a day!

Other Fun Things to Do With One Day in Zagreb

Start your one day in Zagreb at Ban Jelacic (Zagreb’s main square).

Where better to kick off your one day in Zagreb itinerary than with a visit to the main square?

Lined with colorful buildings on one side and an endless parade of bright blue trams passing by on the other, Ban Jelacic is both beautiful and busy.

The square is also conveniently located in the midst of many of the best things to do in Zagreb, making it a great jumping-off point for your day in Croatia’s capital city.

Seek out incredible views at Zagreb 360.

After seeing photos of what the view from the top of Zagreb 360 looked like, we couldn’t resist heading up ourselves–and we’re so, so glad we did.

Housed on the top floor of an otherwise unremarkable-looking office building at the edge of Ban Jelacic, Zagreb 360 is home to some of the best views of Zagreb you could ever hope for.

The tickets are good all day, with however many entrances you want.

If you’re so inclined, feel free to return to Zagreb 360 in the evening to appreciate the sparkling lights of Zagreb lit up against the night sky!

Prefer to have the context of a tour during your one day in Zagreb? This popular walking tour is a great introduction to the city!

View of Ban Jelacic from Zagreb 360, a must-visit during one day in Zagreb!

Stroll through the Dolac Market.

As you head closer to the Zagreb Cathedral, pass through Dolac Market to enjoy the sights, smells, and possibly tastes of this marketplace!

The red umbrellas shading the market are well known and incredibly photogenic.

Selling fruits, veggies, flowers, meats, and more, the Dolac Market is a must-see during one day in Zagreb.

While you’re there, definitely consider picking up a snack for later!

Photo of Dolac Market shaded by red umbrellas, a must-see on a one day in Zagreb itinerary

Step inside the Zagreb Cathedral.

This Gothic-style church is beautiful inside and out and also happens to be the tallest building in Croatia.

(This is probably not surprising to hear once you see how much the cathedral towers over everything around it!)

Though a church has been present in this location since the 12th century, this building dates to the 13th.

The current cathedral has been modified as it sustained damage over the centuries, most notably in the 1880 Zagreb earthquake.

Photo of Zagreb Cathedral from the front--definitely add this to your lists of things to see with one day in Zagreb Croatia.

Make your way to the Stone Gate.

Built in the 13th century as one of four gates fortifying medieval Zagreb, Stone Gate is the only one that is still standing today.

You can walk right through the gate when visiting Zagreb, and as you do, you’ll pass from the Lower Town to Upper Town.

You’ll also notice that the Stone Gate is not only a gate, but also a shrine.

In fact, it’s the largest and most important shrine in Zagreb, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Photo of interior of Stone Gate in Zagreb Croatia, a must-see when spending one day in Zagreb

Check out Lotrščak Tower.

This 13th-century tower once acted as a guard tower protecting what is now the Upper Town of Zagreb.

And, as all guard towers should, it has a great view of the surrounding area!

Unless you’re intent on getting every single overview of Zagreb possible, it’s probably not necessary to climb it given the fact that you already visited Zagreb 360 and also have some more epic views coming up.

It’s still worth stopping by to take a quick look during your one day in Zagreb, though, especially since the tower is located right along your route.

Pay a visit to the Strossmayer Promenade.

Strossmayer Promenade may not be perched as high above the city as Lotrščak Tower, but it is a beautiful, peaceful place that–once again–boasts beautiful views of the city.

Stop by and rest your feet for a moment during your one day in Zagreb, Croatia.

Peruse the Museum of Broken Relationships.

The Museum of Broken Relationships has been on our list for years, and after finally making it there, we absolutely believe that it lives up to the hype and can heartily recommend making room for it in your itinerary when seeing Zagreb in a day.

Made up of donated items that represent lost relationships, each item is accompanied by a short story about the love story that it was part of.

The items vary dramatically, from clothing to jewelry to books to pizza boxes and beyond, and the stories just as much so.

Some stories are touching, some are gut-wrenching, some are deeply uncomfortable.

Save plenty of time for this compelling museum–it’s easy to spend over an hour here.

Photo of white wall in the Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb Croatia. Black text reads "All love affairs happen in foreign cities."

Admire St. Mark’s Church.

Though the Zagreb Cathedral is certainly larger, the colorful, tiled rooftop of St. Mark’s Church, framed perfectly by the wide, nearly empty square in Upper Town that the church calls home, is among the most recognizable aspects of the city.

Once you lay eyes on its brilliant colors in person, it’s not hard to see why!

Kate Storm and Jeremy Storm in front of St. Mark's Church--even if you're only seeing Zagreb in a day, it's definitely worth stopping by here!

Head down to Tkalčićeva Street.

At this point, you’ll likely be ready to wrap up your Zagreb sightseeing for the day (or perhaps not–we’ll cover some more suggestions on how to fill one day in Zagreb below for those who want extra ideas!), so it’s time to head to Tkalčićeva Street.

Filled to the brim with restaurants, cafes, and bars, Tkalčićeva Street is the perfect place to settle in for a laid-back Croatian dinner and reflect on the beauty of the city.

Depending on how early of a start you get to your one day in Zagreb, how long you linger over cups of coffee in outdoor cafes in true Croatian style, and how much sightseeing you like to do in a day, the one day Zagreb itinerary outlined above very well might fill your day!

However, if you’re the type to want to pack your sightseeing days completely full, here are a few more fun things to do that you just might have time for when seeing Zagreb in a day.

Check out the Grič Tunnel.

Built during WWII as a bomb shelter, the Grič Tunnel has experienced many fates over the decades, but today serves as a tourist attraction.

Stroll through the tunnel for a different perspective on Zagreb–literally.

For additional historical context on the Gric Tunnel and beyond, consider joining this well-reviewed Croatian Homeland War Tour .

Ride the funicular to Upper Town.

Zagreb’s funicular is one of the shortest in the entire world, drawing opinions that suggest it’s more about fun than function.

At a mere 66 meters of track length, the Zagreb funicular is both short and steep.

It’s also a fun way to get to Upper Town if you’d rather avoid a (mild) climb!

view of blue cars of zagreb funicular from above, one of the best things to do in zagreb croatia

Duck into the 80’s Museum.

This interactive museum is dedicated entirely to 1980s Yugoslavia: the culture, the technology, the style.

Step inside to be immersed in the (fairly recent) past.

Stroll through Green Horseshoe Park.

Made up of 8 parks that curve through Zagreb in a vague horseshoe shape, this is a beautiful place to rest and relax in Zagreb.

The green, leafy parks are incredibly tranquil, and we found ourselves finding excuses to spend extra time in them!

Green Horseshoe Park Zagreb Croatia

When deciding where to stay when spending one day in Zagreb, we recommend choosing a hotel within a comfortable walk of Ban Jelacic and/or St. Mark’s Church.

By doing so, you’ll ensure you’re in a good place to reach just about all the best things to do in Zagreb, Croatia on foot.

Here are a few popular, well-located properties to consider for your trip to Zagreb!

shaded greenspace in horseshoe park as seen when visiting zagreb croatia for a day

DTA Zagreb — This popular guesthouse is perfect for those looking for something a step above a hostel, while still visiting Zagreb on a budget.

Located just a short walk from Ban Jelacic, you’ll be within reach of all the best Zagreb sightseeing from here!

Check rates & book your stay at DTA Zagreb!

Premium Zagreb Delux Studio & Rooms — We loved our stay at this property!

The studio we rented was easy to find, a reasonable walk from everything you’d hope to see in Zagreb in a day, incredibly comfortable, and a great place to retreat at the end of the day.

We’d be thrilled to stay again.

Check rates & book your stay at Premium Zagreb Delux Studio & Rooms!

Hotel Dubrovnik — Set right on Ban Jelacic and boasting spacious rooms, great reviews, and a tasty included breakfast, you can’t go wrong with a stay at the popular Hotel Dubrovnik!

If you’re looking to make your trip to Zagreb as smooth and simple as possible, this is the hotel for you.

Check rates & book your stay at Hotel Dubrovnik!

Take This Map With You! Click each highlight to pull up the name of the destination. To save this map to “Your Places” on Google Maps, click the star to the right of the title. You’ll then be able to find it under the Maps tab of your Google Maps account! To open the map in a new window, click the button on the top right of the map.

Getting around during your one day in Zagreb should be incredibly easy: you can walk just about everywhere!

Zagreb is not a large city, and if you choose a hotel or apartment within walking distance of the main square, it’s likely you won’t need any other forms of transportation during your time exploring Zagreb.

Photo of a blue tram in Zagreb Croatia

If you do need or want to use additional transportation, Zagreb’s extensive tram system is easy to use and a huge benefit.

Uber does also operate in the city and connects to local taxis.

If you’d like to avoid climbing the hill to Upper Town (it’s really not bad at all, though!), or you’re just a fan of quirky transportation, you can also ride the funicular all 66 meters up.

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Need to know about steps to see sites. After ride to upper area is it flat walking?

Fairly flat, yes. Unfortunately I can’t recall if there are any small staircases along the way, but it’s not a climb once you’re up there.

Super helpful recs. We almost did it all. Thanks for sharing such great insight.

So glad you guys had a great time!

We are visiting this year and looking forward to following your itinerary. Sounds perfect. Thank you

Thanks, Jackie! Hope you guys have a great time.

We have 2 nights in Zagreb at the end of a 10-day trip through Croatia. Between Split and Zagreb, we’re planning to visit Plitvice National Park, leaving really just one full day in Zagreb. We’re torn between a planned day excursion to Ljubljana/Lake Bled or just spending the final day relaxing and exploring Zagreb. I’d really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you may have related to which option would be better. We will have a driver/tour guide if we opt for the Slovenia excursion.

Thanks, Kevin

That’s a tough call! Lake Bled is definitely a memorable place, but I’d probably default to Zagreb simply to avoid spending 5+ hours in the car versus a full day enjoying a city.

Ljubljana and Zagreb are both fun cities to spend time in, so it’d be simpler to opt for the one you’re already in. 🙂

Because of that, I’d weigh your decision based on how much you want to see Lake Bled (with the caveat that you won’t have much time to spend there).

Thanks, Kate. I appreciate your feedback.

I am visiting in March, and I am following your one day itinerary ! Thank you so much

That’s great to hear, thanks Stavri! Enjoy Zagreb! 🙂
