11 Facts About 7-Eleven
By rob lammle | jul 1, 2022, 10:36 am edt.
Happy 7-Eleven day! Don't forget to pick up a free Slurpee —and while you're enjoying the iconic slushie , read up on little-known tidbits about the popular company.
1. 7-Eleven started in 1927.
That was when Joe Thompson , an employee of the Southland Ice Company in Dallas, Texas, began selling eggs, milk, and bread from a makeshift storefront in one of the company’s icehouses. These bare necessities were kept cold thanks to the ice Southland produced, and local residents liked the convenience of avoiding the crowds and aisles of a regular grocery store if they only had to pick up a few items.
Thompson eventually bought out the ice company and started opening convenient little stores all over Texas. Shortly after, a company executive brought a souvenir totem pole back from a trip to Alaska, and set it in front of one of the busiest locations. Soon, the spot had earned the nickname the “Tote’m Store,” not only because of the totem pole , but because customers toted away their purchases. The company officially adopted the name and decorated their locations with an Inuit-inspired theme to match. The name changed to 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect their new store hours—7 a.m. to 11 p.m.—in order to capitalize on the post-World War II economic boom.
2. 7-Eleven's new schedule was unheard of at the time.
No one thought there would be demand for a store that was open 24/7—until one night in Austin in 1962. The local 7-Eleven had seen such a rush of students following a University of Texas football game that they were forced to stay open until dawn the next day. Sensing a trend, the store continued to stay open all night on the weekends, and soon more and more locations adopted the new schedule as well.
3. 7-Eleven is one of the world's largest franchise companies.
They beat out McDonald’s in 2007 and have since outgrown them by about 20,000 stores. Japan is the largest market with more than 20,000 stores under the name “Seven & I Holdings,” the parent company of 7-Eleven since 2005. North America has more than 9800 stores . And the company keeps growing, with a brand new store opening somewhere in the world every two hours of every day.
4. 7-Eleven ran the first television advertisement for a convenience store in 1949.
The ad touted their curbside grocery delivery service, and an animated rooster and owl reminded customers that the store was open early and closed late.
5. The Slurpee was actually invented at a Dairy Queen.
In the late-1950s, Omar Knedlik of Kansas City owned a rundown Dairy Queen . When his soda fountain went on the fritz, he improvised by putting some bottles in the freezer to stay cool. However, when he popped the top, they were a little frozen and slushy. Folks loved them and started requesting "those pops that were in a little bit longer." Realizing he had a surprise hit on his hands, Knedlik built a specialized machine using the air conditioning unit from a car, and cranked out slushy soda by freezing a mixture of flavored syrup, water, and carbon dioxide to make it fizz. He called it an ICEE, but when the drink concept was licensed to 7-Eleven in 1965, the company’s marketing department renamed it the Slurpee after the sound made while sipping it through a straw.
6. Since 2002, 7-Eleven has given away free small Slurpees to celebrate the company's birthday.
On July 11 (7/11), 7-Eleven gives away about 500,000 gallons of Slurpees ... in North America anyway. In Australia, where the ice cold drink is also very popular, Slurpees are given away on November 7 (written Down Under as 7/11) to the tune of about 270,000 gallons.
7. Almost all Slurpee flavors are considered kosher pareve (food that is neither meat nor dairy).
There are a few, such as Diet Pepsi and the Jolly Rancher mixes, that are considered kosher dairy (due to the chemical tagatose in the artificial sweetener), while others, like the popular Piña Colada drink, are not certified at all. Some 7-Eleven stores get the machines themselves certified kosher as a selling point for their Jewish customers.
8. For more than 20 years, the ruling Slurpee capital of the world has been Winnipeg, Canada.
Manitoba has an average of over 188,000 Slurpees sold in five regional stores every month. Winnipeg in particular is known— and celebrated —for its taste for the icy treat. People display their love of Slurpees outside the store, too: Some even have the machines installed for private parties.
9. Since the 2000 presidential election, 7-Eleven has run a promotion called "7-Election."
Customers vote by purchasing special red or blue coffee cups printed with each candidate's name. The cups are scanned at check-out and automatically entered in this unscientific, but surprisingly accurate poll—in 2000 and 2004, the number of coffee cup votes and the number of actual popular votes for both candidates was only off by 1 or 2 percentage points. While 2008's 7-Elections results were still correct, they gave the election to Obama by a landslide—60 percent to 40 percent—when the margin was really only about 7 percent. The trend continued in 2012, as caffeine enthusiasts went blue to the tune of 59 percent for Obama to 41 percent for Romney, while the actual vote wound up being 51 percent to 47 percent. In 2016 , 31 percent voted Democrat, 29 percent Republican, and 40 percent opted for the special "Speak Up" (write-in vote) cup.
10. To promote the release of The Simpsons Movie in 2007, 12 7-Elevens in North America were converted to Kwik-E-Marts.
That's the convenience store in Springfield owned by Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. At a cost of about $10 million, the 7-Eleven stores had their exterior signs replaced to reflect the fictitious store name and many of the products inside were modeled after those seen on the show. For example, customers could buy Krusty-O’s cereal, a limited edition Radioactive Man comic book, six packs of Buzz Cola, and even Squishees, the Simpsons version of the Slurpee. Sadly, Homer’s favorite swill, Duff Beer, was not available as the film being promoted was rated PG-13. Instead, they had a Duff Energy Drink with a label very similar to the animated brew. While not all locations were transformed into Kwik-E-Marts, special Simpsons merchandise was available at all 7-Eleven locations, including Homer’s own Woo-Hoo Blue Vanilla Slurpees with collectible straws.
11. 7-Elevens are different all around the world.
In America, we see 7-Eleven as little more than a convenient place to grab a quick cup of coffee before work or a Big Gulp while we’re out running errands. But in other parts of the world, the shops are a lot more important to the local population. In Indonesia, for example, 7-Elevens are more like a hip, upscale coffeehouse where a majority of customers are under the age of 30. The stores offer free Wi-Fi, plenty of tables and chairs inside and out on the sidewalk, and often feature live musical performances. Young people gather there late into the night to socialize, work online, and eat local favorites like fried rice, tiny sandwiches filled with cheese or chocolate called pillow bread, and chicken katsu, a Japanese-style fried cutlet.
In Taiwan , 7-Elevens are more common than Starbucks in Seattle. In the capital city of Taipei, there are more than 4000 locations in a city of 23 million, with many city blocks capable of sustaining more than one location. Aside from purchasing local food and Slurpees, customers can pay credit card and utility bills, book travel arrangements, and buy small electronics like iPods. It’s also not unusual for people to have packages delivered to their closest 7-Eleven instead of their home, because it’s more convenient to pick it up late at night instead of trying to coordinate with a deliveryman. The government has even given into the popularity of the shops by allowing people to pay traffic tickets and property taxes there, and using them as a hub for special programs like health screenings.
A version of this story originally ran in 2018; it has been updated for 2022.
I rarely visit 7-Eleven in the US, but on a trip to Japan, it became one of my favorite spots
- Japan is home to more 7-Eleven stores than anywhere else in the world.
- On a trip to Tokyo and Kyoto, I understood why the convenience store has grown in popularity.
- It became a daily stop for me. I'd grab cash, pick up sushi, and try Japanese snacks.
There's pretty much only one reason I ever step inside a 7-Eleven in the US, and it's when I'm craving the artificial sweetness of a blue-raspberry Slurpee.
But on a trip to Japan, I found myself inside a 7-Eleven practically every day.
Whether it was to grab cash or scarf down a quick sushi roll, the convenience store has a new place in my heart (and my stomach).
A 7-Eleven in Tokyo, Japan. Monica Humphries/Insider
7-elevens are huge in japan.
According to Sugoi Mart , 7-Eleven is the largest convenience-store chain in Japan. I saw that firsthand. There were rarely times on my trip when I wasn't a five-minute walk to a 7-Eleven. And usually, I had my choice between three or four within walking distance.
According to the Los Angeles Times , there are between 50,000 and 60,000 7-Elevens spread across the country.
The chain's rise to popularity came about for a few reasons. First of all, 7-Elevens are convenient. Japan has a fast-paced lifestyle and long working hours, and since 7-Elevens are open 24/7, it makes it an easy place to grab a quick bite to eat, Sugoi Mart reports.

The quality food has also contributed to its popularity, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"The quality is next level," Kaila Imada, a senior editor for Time Out Tokyo, who has written connoisseur's guides to the convenience store, told the Los Angeles Times. "You can find dinner there and it will be a top-notch dinner."

I discovered it was a fun place to try japanese snacks and an easy place to take out cash.
The convenience store practically became a daily stop on my 12-day trip to Tokyo and Kyoto.
It was one of the first places I visited when I arrived since 7-Elevens have ATMs where anyone can take out cash. Since Japan still heavily relies on cash , it was almost always easier to find a 7-Eleven than a bank that worked with my debit card.
The stores were both eerily similar and exactly the opposite of the ones I've been to in the US. While the exterior, branding, and store layout were identical, the food was completely different — and that's why I think I was enamored by it so much.
In the mornings, I popped in to try different canned coffees, matcha, and teas. I guzzled bottles of Craft Boss matcha.
In the afternoon, if I wanted a snack between dinner and lunch, I'd grab an onigiri, which is a Japanese rice ball filled with seafood and covered by seaweed — the perfect walking snack. While the convenience-store sushi didn't compare to the restaurants I visited in the country, it could compete with some of the sushi I eat back home in Denver, Colorado.
At night, I almost always popped into the store to grab some sweets. During the two weeks of my vacation, I tried a Choco Monaka Jumbo , which is an ice cream surrounded by a crispy wafer and crunchy chocolate shell; I devoured down Crunky Cookie Balls , which are crispy cookies coated in chocolate; and had more than my fair share of Pocky , which are popular biscuit sticks coated in chocolate, strawberry cream, cookies and cream, matcha, or banana cream.
Perhaps the best part was that the snacks were always affordable. I never spent more than a few US dollars on my 7-Eleven stops, so trying the popular snacks quickly became one of my favorite parts of my time in Japan.

'Brain Freeze,' 7-Eleven Wine, and More Fun Facts About America's First Convenience Store

Thank Heaven
Few stores are more ingrained in the fabric of American culture than 7-Eleven. Still, the world's largest convenience-store chain has some secrets unknown to even its most loyal customers, including a newly launched line of clothing and other merchandise for 7-Eleven fans who, say, want to wear a Big Gulp without having to waste a drop.

Grab Your Favorite 7-Eleven Merchandise
Fans of 7-Eleven can now wear their loyalty on their sleeves — literally. Slurpee and Big Gulp enthusiasts can now find their favorite products emblazoned on short- and long-sleeved T-shirts, along with other merchandise featuring the 7-Eleven brand logos, including hats, totes, fanny packs — even a coffee-scented air freshener — at 7-Eleven's online shop . Starting Thursday, orders placed using the code 7Collection11 get an 11% discount, but hurry, the offer expires Aug. 31.
Yes, a Giant Lizard Paid a Visit to 7-Eleven in Thailand
Wait, what's that about giant lizards? Anyone who's been in a convenience store late at night has probably seen their fair share of strange characters, but it was broad daylight when a 6-foot lizard decided to chill out in a 7-Eleven near Bangkok. The Asian water monitor — the second-largest kind of lizard in the world — scaled shelves packed with beverages and lingered near the ice machine for more than an hour. No word on whether the valued shopper got a Big Gulp or Slurpee for his trouble.

It Started With a Guy Selling Groceries From an Ice Dock
Long before 7-Eleven made it to Thailand, convenience retailing was born in Oak Cliff, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. In 1927, Southland Ice Co. employee "Uncle Johnny" Green started selling milk, eggs, and bread from the ice dock on evenings and weekends when grocery stores were closed. The small retail endeavor was an immediate success and expanded to all the company's ice docks.
The Store Was Originally Called Tote'm
First called Tote'm Stores because customers literally toted their groceries away, the first convenience store was later renamed 7-Eleven in 1946 to reflect its 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. hours of operation. Some of the original Tote'm stores even featured totem poles out front.
There Are Nearly Twice as Many 7-Elevens in the World as McDonald's
In many parts of the world, you don't have to travel far to find a 7-Eleven. As of January 2020, 7-Eleven operated more than 70,000 stores in 17 countries around the world, including more than 20,000 in Japan. By comparison, worldwide there were about 40,000 McDonald's locations in operation in 2020 and some 32,600 Starbucks locations.
The Big Gulp Was Originally Milk-Carton Shaped
The Big Gulp drink, 7-Eleven stores' proprietary 32-ounce fountain cup, is the granddaddy of large-size drinks. First introduced in 1976, the original milk carton-shaped Big Gulp cup nearly doubled the company's fountain business overnight. At the time, it was the biggest cup on the market.
7-Eleven Was the First Convenience Store to Stay Open 24 Hours
7-Eleven is home to a number of notable worldwide firsts. Not only was it the first convenience store to stay open 24 hours, it was also the first convenience store to sell gas, as well as the first to offer ATMs.
The Slurpee Was Invented by a Kansas Hamburger Stand Owner
7-Eleven stores began selling Slurpee drinks, then called Icees, in its stores in 1965. The frozen, carbonated beverage was first invented in 1959 by a Kansas hamburger -stand owner. Using an automobile air conditioner, he created a sophisticated piece of equipment that would freeze a carbonated soft drink and serve it in a sherbet-like form that could be sipped through a straw.
7-Eleven Coined the Term 'Brain Freeze'
The Slurpee name was created in May 1967 during a brainstorming session of the Stanford Agency, 7-Eleven stores' in-house agency. While drinking the product through a straw, agency director Bob Stanford commented that it made a "slurp" sound coming through the straw. In 1994, 7-Eleven trademarked the term "brain freeze" to communicate the painful joy of drinking a frozen Slurpee.
7-Eleven Launched Its Private Brand Wine in 2005 …
The company entered the wine market with its own private-label wine in 2005. Thousand Oaks, a California vintage, was introduced in five varietals: cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot, pinot grigio and white zinfandel. Within months, sales of the Thousand Oaks varietals pushed it up to the second-most popular wine at 7-Eleven, only behind mega-brand Gallo. Thousand Oaks is no longer available.

… and Today Has Several Private Brand Wines
In 2009, 7-Eleven in the U.S. and 7-Eleven Japan partnered to create and introduce Yosemite Road wine, the world’s largest convenience retailer’s first foray into global merchandising. 7-Eleven expanded its private brand wine selection in 2017 with the launch of Trojan Horse brand white wines, adding Voyager Point in 2018 as a more expensive option. In 2021, 7-Eleven introduced Plot + Point chardonnay and pinot grigio, packaged in a screw-top carton.
It Even Has Its Own Canned Wine Brand
For on-the-go wine drinkers, 7-Eleven introduced its first canned wine, called Roamer, in 2018. Roamer is available in chardonnay and rose. Though glass bottles still hold the vast majority of wine sales, canned wines sales have surged in the past few years.
7-Eleven Produces About 1,500 Private Brand Items
7-Eleven produces some 1,500 private brand items and sales of these proprietary packaged beverages, foods and nonfood items topped $1 billion last year. Products include Skýra Icelandic spring water, 7-Select Replenish sports drink and Quake energy drinks, and 7-Select GO!Smart organic cold-pressed juices.
7-Eleven Sells More Than 1 Million Cups of Coffee a Day
Of all its proprietary products, 7-Eleven sells more fresh-brewed coffee than anything else — more than 1 million cups each day. Since 2016, 7-Eleven has introduced Rainforest Alliance Certified coffees from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Sumatra, Colombia, as well as an African blend from Ethiopia and Rwanda, all marketed as responsibly grown.
7-Eleven Has Its Own Delivery App
Introduced as a test in Dallas-Fort Worth in 2017, the 7NOW delivery app is available in nearly 414 cities, offering consumers more than 3,000 items from grocery staples and over-the-counter medicine to beer and wine in participating markets. Orders are delivered in about 30 minutes, though demand may impact delivery times.
7-Eleven Is Currently Testing a Cashierless Store
Last year, 7-Eleven began testing a cashierless store at its corporate headquarters in Irving, Texas. During the pilot, the 700-square-foot nontraditional store is available to 7-Eleven employees. To shop, employees download an app, sign up, check in at the store, shop, and exit. A detailed receipt appears in the app automatically after the customer exits.
You Can Pay Your Taxes (in Cash) At 7-Eleven
In recent years, the IRS has partnered with retailers , including 7-Eleven, in the 50 states and Puerto Rico to allow cash tax payments up to $1,000 a day. How does it work? After the IRS verifies your identity, you receive an email with a link to your payment code and ask the clerk to either scan or enter your code upon payment.
7-Eleven Has Hosted Informal Polls During Presidential Election Years
Every four years from 2000 to 2016, 7-Eleven has hosted an informal "7-Election" poll where customers make their party preferences known by choosing different colored coffee cups either blue for Democratic or red for Republican. In recent years, the company has also offered a third nonpartisan purple "Speak Up" cup that urges costumers to discuss issues that are importance to them. The company skipped the poll in 2020, citing an "unprecedented and financially challenging year for customers," but it isn't ruling out a return in 2024.
The Company Gives Away an Estimated 9 Million Slurpees on 7-Eleven Day
7-Eleven Day is an annual promotional holiday held by the company every July 11 in which the retailer offers free small Slurpees from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Past years have also included special deals on other items like hot dogs, pizza slices, and yes, Slurpee-flavored cookies. The company suspended celebrations in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic but revived it for 2022 to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the company's founding.

Inside the 7-Eleven, QuikTrip War for Your Business
By omar villafranca • published june 30, 2010 • updated on june 30, 2010 at 11:30 pm.
Dallas-based 7-Eleven is the world's largest convenience store company, but the company expects some competition from Tulsa-based QuikTrip .
James Massey , the real estate manager for 7-Eleven in Texas, said the "C-store" giant has 270 locations in Dallas-Fort Worth right now and expects to open up 15 more spots by the end of the year.
Fast forward a few years, and the company plans to open up 75 shops across North Texas in the next three years. Massey said Dallas County will see its fair share of new locations, but people living in Rockwall, Collin and Denton counties can expect to see more stores around town.
But don't expect all the new 7-Eleven stores to have gas pumps. Some stores won't have gas available if space is limited.
"Consumptions of cigarettes is down, beer is about flat, and sodas have been declining or flat over the last several years, so if you want to grow your business, you have to do something else," Massey said.
Massey said the company has listened to customer demands and added more fresh food products, such as fruit and veggie trays, salads, along with bread and milk that is delivered daily.
But don't expect to see a big beer selection at all 7-Elevens. At the store's downtown location, surrounded by office buildings, only four cooler spaces are dedicated to beer and wine.
The latest news from around North Texas.

"People use the store differently downtown because they're on foot," Massey said. "They don't want to carry a case of beer back to their car or hotel or home."
Massey said each store monitors which products sell and which ones don't. Some stores will sell more beer, while others will sell more chips and coffee. If one product is doing better at the register, slower-moving products will get moved out for quick-selling items.
"We also introduce 20 new products a week, so if things come out, other things have to come in, and that's how we find out what the customers want," Massey said. "It's a low-cost way to find out what the customers do want. If they buy it, it stays. If they don't buy it, it doesn't stay."
7-Eleven makes 300 of its "7-Select" brand products from chips to cookies and sandwiches. The company plans to unveil a "Game Day Beer" in Texas, brewed in Wisconsin.
The company is also making headway in the social media world of Facebook and Twitter. 7-Eleven has marketed products featuring "Farmville" and "Mafia Wars," two popular Facebook games.
Tulsa-based QuikTrip has 76 stores in North Texas, and five more are under construction.
Mike Thornbrugh , a spokesman for QuikTrip, said the company plans to build and open up eight to 10 stores in North Texas per year. The company chose North Texas to expand because of the sheer size and the expectations that the DFW area will grow even bigger.
"There is a tremendous population base. People use their vehicles quite a bit, and they're thirsty, and they're hungry," Thornbrugh said. "As the population continues to grow in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I mean, QuikTrip is going to build a lot more stores."
Thornbrugh said QuikTrip is so committed to expand in North Texas, they have a contract on a distribution plant in Midlothian to service their stores. The company already has a distribution hub in Colleyville.
Like 7-Eleven, Thornbrugh said QuikTrip customers have been asking for fresh options when it comes to food.
"The fresh-food market -- there's no question, that's where we're headed," he said. "We recognize it's going to take us a long time to do it the way we want to, but we're very patient."
Thornbrugh also said the company is trying to make waves in the social media market via Facebook and Twitter.
"We're learning a little bit about what the word Twitter is and how you use it, but honestly, the best thing you can do is meet the expectation of that customer every day," he said.

Amid trying season, Bill Belichick, Patriots hoping trip to Germany serves as a reprieve
FRANKFURT, Germany — Bill Belichick sat down in the middle of a row of microphones Friday and smiled at the sight before him. He was in the state-of-the-art facilities of the German national soccer team. Several dozen German reporters looked on gleefully at the most successful head coach in NFL history, and multiple times, they congratulated him on all of his success, including the six Super Bowls his New England Patriots have won.
They wanted to know if he’d had time to explore this historic city, his thoughts on whether the league would expand into Europe and how he looked at his legacy built over nearly 50 years in the league.
At one point, a local reporter in the front row noted that he’d been a fan of the Patriots for 23 years.
“I’ve never seen you laugh so much,” he told Belichick.
Indeed, we saw a different Belichick on Friday. Over the course of his longest news conference of the season, Belichick joked with reporters, commented on the pretzels that were being served, apologized when he didn’t have full answers and was downright jovial.
LIVE: Bill Belichick Press Conference 11/10: https://t.co/vTSe8IQ5lz — New England Patriots (@Patriots) November 10, 2023
For a Patriots team that has been so consumed by the pressure and questions about job security that come with a 2-7 start, a trip across the pond provided an instant reprieve from the intense burden of a disappointing season at home — even if it came with a side of jet lag.
“I’m kind of running on fumes here,” Belichick said. “Not sure how long I’ll last tonight.”
That’s not to say this break will last forever. If the Patriots return from Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts with another loss, Belichick will be firmly on the hot seat with questions swirling around whether he’ll get to remain the head coach in 2024. But on the Patriots’ first afternoon in Germany, those were questions for another day.
What are the Patriots' options for getting rid of Bill Belichick? Exploring 6 scenarios
On this day, the team enjoyed the break that a visit to Germany provided. Belichick talked about building relationships with the few teams here that play American football, explained why he still enjoys coaching and joked that when he coached German players like Sebastian Vollmer, “I learned that when they were saying things under their breath to me in German, it probably wasn’t complimentary.”
The Patriots did most of their prep work back in Foxboro, condensing their schedule to allow for a lighter Friday. Even on this trip that takes them away from the pressure of home, there are plenty of concerning aspects they still need to work through.
Trent Brown , their starting left tackle, is set to miss a second straight game — he was listed on the injury report as absent due to both an ankle injury and personal reasons, though Belichick didn’t go into detail on the latter. The Patriots are already without another starter after leaving J.C. Jackson back in New England after he showed up late to the team hotel before last weekend’s game against the Commanders . And they’ll play a second straight game without DeVante Parker (concussion), which, combined with the loss of Kendrick Bourne , means they’ll be without their top two wide receivers.
Then there’s Jack Jones . The much-maligned cornerback was benched for the first two series last week after he, too, was reportedly late to the team hotel last weekend, but he made the trip to Germany and is expected to play Sunday.
“He’s responded,” safety Jabrill Peppers said of Jones. “We’re all grown men. He took it like a man. He knows what we expect from him, and we expect we’ll get that from him.”
Why has the Bill Belichick coaching tree produced such imperfect fruit?
So after a week full of drama, the Patriots are hoping this trip delivers a break from all that has plagued them, though they won’t have a ton of time to see the sights. The team landed in Frankfurt on Friday around 8 a.m. Players were told not to nap so they could more quickly adjust to the time difference. Now, they’re hoping the time before the game can lead to some bonding.
“I think this trip could definitely be good for us,” running back Ezekiel Elliott said. “A change of pace. And it’s happening at the perfect time in the middle of the season with the bye week coming. So it’s a chance to be able to spend a little more time together at night and for the guys to get some beers together and dinner and have some camaraderie.”
Some beers, huh? Sample the local flavor? Maybe a German pilsner or two?
“I’m kind of joking,” Elliott said. “But just having that camaraderie is important. You’ve got to have that to get closer and bond — but not necessarily pounding beers.”
Friday’s early afternoon practice was a light one with plenty of players and coaches joking around before it started. Elliott and Matthew Slater competed against each other in German trivia. (Slater won.)

“I’m not saying it’s Brady-Manning, but it certainly means a lot,” Slater said of the trip and the upcoming game. “I love playing in Europe because I feel like the loudest the stadium gets is when the ball is kicked.”
Through all the jokes, everyone still knows all eyes are on Belichick as he navigates what may be the most trying season of his career.
During his 17-minute press conference, Belichick was asked what keeps him motivated to coach, an interesting question amid the ones swirling about his job security.
“I enjoy all aspects of it: the preparation, the staff, the players, it’s a great environment,” Belichick said. “Honestly, it beats working.”

16 Groundbreaking Tips for a Successful Solo Road Trip
Posted: March 23, 2024 | Last updated: March 23, 2024
Are you brave enough to go on a road trip all on your own? It’s perfect for people who love their own company and those who want some alone time. If you’re ready for this adventure, here are some tips to guide you along the way.
1. Identify and Accept Your Driving Limits
On a solo road trip, you must do everything independently. You can’t switch with anyone as a driver, so you must identify your driving limits and plan your travel accordingly. If you can drive for 8 hours daily, limit your driving time to under that. Try to plan several breaks in between to avoid exhaustion.
2. Use Navigation Tools
Navigation tools make all road trips easier and safer. Using multiple navigation tools beats using a single map you can follow. If your internet connection is stable, you can use Google Maps. If you have no access to the internet, prepare a paper map in advance. Ensure you’re using a legitimate map like the ones National Geographic offers.
3. Pack Efficiently
Always pack light when on a road trip . Hauling heavy luggage to a rest stop makes the trip unbearable, and the added weight burns your fuel. Packing efficiently and carrying fewer items is much more convenient.
4. Choose a Fun Theme for Your Trip
Spice up your solo trip with a theme! Choose something that interests you, whether it’s art, culture, or rocking out to music. Explore national parks with art installations or hit the road to legendary music venues.
5. Book Your Accommodation in Advance
When you’re planning your solo road trip, book your accommodation beforehand. From Airbnb to Booking.com, you have many options. Checking reviews helps you choose a great place and avoid any unpleasant surprises.
6. Use Roadside Assistance
Keep the contact details of roadside assistance on hand. Having the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the Canadian Automobile Association’s (CAA) numbers can be a lifesaver on the road. You never know when you might need their assistance with a flat tire, dead battery, or other car troubles. They can provide you with quick and easy help with minimal hassle.
7. Bring Health Meals and Snacks
Bringing healthy meals and snacks keeps your body fit and helps you save money. Rather than buying meals from fast food chains along the way, you can prep your favorite meals and pack them in food containers. You can bring grapes, trail mix, and protein bars for light snacks.
8. Set the Right Pace for Your Drive
While driving, enjoy the view with a carefree pace. Plan your driving time with breaks and rest stops built in. A leisurely pace lets you arrive refreshed and ready to explore.
9. Keep Yourself Entertained
Driving alone can be boring, but there are many ways to beat boredom safely. Listen to your favorite tunes, catch up on podcasts, or try a new audiobook. Just choose entertainment that lets you focus on the road.
10. Stay Hydrated
Keep your water on hand and well-stocked on a solo road trip. While you risk having more stops for bathroom breaks, being hydrated guarantees that your body is always in good condition. Use a recyclable bottle for your water and keep it near you.
11. Sleep Well Before Your Solo Road Trip
Prepare for the road trip by ensuring your body is in top condition for driving. Sleep well before the day of the trip so you won’t be sleepy while on the road. To be safer, start the trip in the morning after a good rest. Make sure to schedule several breaks between your drives. Stopping every two hours can help your body avoid exhaustion.
12. Inspect and Tune Up Your Vehicle
Prepare your vehicle for the trip whether it’s a short or long drive. Have your car professionally inspected so that if repairs are needed, you can immediately fix them. Pay closer attention to your car’s tires and the cooling system. Make sure your car is in optimal condition before traveling.
13. Get All the Insurance You Need
Look into all the insurance you need to be completely covered on your solo trip. Check out your travel insurance to see if it’s updated and if you can still use it. Depending on the coverage, you won’t have to worry about hospital bills in worst-case scenarios or even hotel accommodations when included in your plan. Add roadside assistance and rental car insurance to the mix just to be sure you cover all the bases.
14. Keep Yourself Alert and Attentive
On a solo trip, you must be alert to avoid getting sleepy while driving. You’ll feel sleepy and bored on the road with no one to talk to. You can try to keep your eyes open by chewing gum and sitting up straight. Energizing scents like menthol and peppermint can also be used inside the vehicle.
15. Stay in Touch With Family and Friends
Since you’re traveling alone, stay in touch with your family and friends. Send them a short message or call to let them know your location and destination. The important thing is to keep them updated for your safety and their peace of mind.
16. Plan and Plot Your Rest Stops
More than just having breaks in your drive to avoid getting tired, you can also plan to visit amazing destinations in your stops. Get a map and look into interesting sites you can visit when taking your break from the long drive. You can also schedule them during mealtimes to eat out comfortably.

Truck driver accused of killing Utah officer was holding woman captive
Michael Aaron Jayne, an Indiana man accused of intentionally killing a Santaquin police officer by running him down, was released from the hospital on Saturday. Police report that a woman was held against her will in his semitruck just before the inc
A truck driver accused of intentionally killing a police officer during a traffic stop in Utah had been holding a woman against her will inside his truck, according to new court documents.
Incident details and arrest
Michael Aaron Jayne, 42, allegedly drove his rig into Santaquin Police Sgt. Bill Hooser, who died at the scene on May 5. Officer Hooser was assisting a woman who had escaped from Jayne's truck.
Jayne, from Garrett, Indiana, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, kidnapping, burglary, vehicle theft, and evading police. He is being held without bail in Utah County Jail.
Traffic stop and escape
Sgt. Hooser and Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Dustin Griffiths stopped Jayne's truck after an anonymous 911 caller reported someone standing on the back of the rig.
While Jayne was distracted, a woman fled from the passenger side, seeking help from Hooser. She told police she had been riding with Jayne voluntarily until an argument at a truck stop in Beaver, Utah, where he later forced her back into the truck with a knife and bear spray.
Fatal encounter
As Griffiths reached for Jayne's door handle, Jayne locked the door and drove off, making a sharp U-turn and accelerating towards Hooser, hitting and killing him.
Jayne then attempted to run over Griffiths and the woman, who managed to escape.
Jayne's criminal history and capture
Jayne, whose criminal history spans over 20 years, fled on foot to a gas station, stole another semitruck, and later a 1976 Ford F250, driving to a vacant house in Mt. Pleasant.
He eventually crashed a stolen Ford F150 near Vernal, Utah, after police intervention. Jayne was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Fallen officer honored
At Sgt. Hooser's funeral, his youngest daughter, Courtney, called her father a hero and expressed her heartbreak over his death.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox condemned Jayne as a "despicable human being" and assured Courtney of the community's support.
Jayne's violent past
Jayne has a history of violence against police, including convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and threats of violence. In 2009, he was charged in Oregon with attempted aggravated murder for trying to hit an officer with his vehicle, resulting in a prison sentence.
No attorney was listed for Jayne in court documents as of Monday.
The Associated Press contributed to this story. It was reported from Los Angeles.
