How Much Do Travel Nurses Make in Colorado?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nurses in Colorado earn an average annual salary of $80,670 which is higher than the national average of $77,600. The compensation for travel nurses is directly reflective of this as well as the ongoing need for nurses. Therefore, it is one of the highest-paying states for travel nurses.

Indeed.com reports an average base salary of $2,156 per week, with top locations in Pueblo, Wheat Ridge, Denver, Aurora, and Englewood.

Highest Paying Nursing Specialties in Colorado

The highest-paid travel nursing specialties depend on a variety of factors including location within the state, demand, and urgency of needs. The demand for travel nurses in Colorado has always been high, causing the pay to be above average. Furthermore, Colorado has a high influx of visitors during the summer due to its breathtaking national parks and during the winter due to the winter ski season in the mountains.

As a result of the increased demand for nurses, wages that are being offered are steadily increasing. Unfortunately, this is not being seen across all disciplines of nursing.

Medical surgical nurses, long-term care nurses, and clinic nurses will see significantly lower rates than other specialties, but this is generally the case even for staff nurses. Increased certifications, credentials, and skills will command higher pay.

Historically speaking, the top-paying travel nurse specialties are:

  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Labor & Delivery
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
  • Operating Room (OR)
  • Post-anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

According to Vivian.com , the top-paying specialties for travel nurses in Colorado are:

  • Registered Nurse First Assist – $4,543 per week
  • OR Circulate – $3.445 per week
  • Perioperative – $3,390 per week
  • Cardiovascular OR – $3,358 per week
  • OR Scrub RN – $3,336 per week
  • Pediatrics PACU – $3,331 per week

Cost of Living for Travel Nurses in Colorado

As the national cost of living continues to rise, Colorado is also seeing a significant rise in the cost of living. In fact, an ongoing issue for travel nurses is finding affordable housing during contracts. There have been many reports of travel nurses not being able to find housing until days before or even days after a contract starts.

Despite all travel nurse companies providing a stipend for housing, at times it is not enough. Furthermore, depending on the location, hotels may not be a viable long-term solution. Travel nurses have resorted to utilizing alternative websites such as Airbnb and Furnished Finders to find housing while traveling.

Cost of living is defined as the amount of money needed to cover basic expenses such as housing, food, taxes, and healthcare. According to Bestplaces.net, Colorado’s overall cost of living is 20.5% higher than the U.S. average. Let’s take a look at some of Colorado’s top cities:

Pros & Cons of Travel Nursing in Colorado

With any career, there are pros and cons to the job. Travel nursing is no different. It’s important to take into consideration your own personal circumstances, family obligations, and reasons for wanting to be a travel nurse. Reasons that some nurses might see as a con may in fact be a positive for you.

1. Increased earning potential

Travel nurses have the ability to earn significantly more money than staff nurses. Furthermore, they can make more due to reimbursements and incentives, which can be earned tax-free . Most travel nurses receive free housing or have a hefty monthly allowance to put toward housing expenses.

One of the main reasons travel nurses start this adventure is to experience different cities and states they may not otherwise get to experience. It also is great for nurses that are not sure where they ultimately want to settle down.

3. Flexibility

You have the ability to take a contract when you want to and where you want. If you really want to travel to Colorado, you have the ability to find a nursing contract that fits your needs. It is also easier to get a permanent staff position if there is a hospital that you eventually want to work at.

4. Networking

Most don’t consider this a huge pro of travel nursing, but it is! With an increase in the number of nurses that go on for an advanced degree, making connections with different hospitals, providers, and nurses can be very important when trying to find preceptors for graduate-level clinical rotations.

5. Avoid hospital and unit politics

Most don’t like to admit it, but bedside nursing comes with drama and politics. It can be as simple as a hierarchy based on seniority or something more serious. Being a travel nurse allows you to avoid all of this by not being fully invested in the unit but instead helping out for a very specific amount of time.

1. Always the new person

Being new to a unit can be exciting but can also be frustrating or even lonely. Not knowing anyone on the unit can affect the type of help you will get in your work environment.

2. Not the best assignments

Some hospitals will assign travel nurses patients just like any other nurse on the unit. Others will assign them the easiest patients, the hardest patients, or the ones that no one wants to deal with.

3. First to float to another unit

Despite being contracted to a specific unit, most travel nurses will have to float to other parts of the hospital within their skill set. This again will make you the new person which can affect how others perceive you as well as assist you throughout the shift

4. Finding a place to live

All travel nurse companies offer their nurses places to live during each contract. However, it is not always in the location that you want, has the amenities you desire, and/or fits your needs. Additionally, if the agency places you in housing, you won’t be offered the housing stipend. Contracts that offer a housing stipend instead, which most travel nurses take, leave the responsibility of finding appropriate housing to you.

5. Changing health insurance policies

With each contract may come a new health insurance policy. This will be dependent on the agency that you work with. If you switch between multiple agencies, then there will most likely be a lapse in your health insurance. However, nurses can opt for private insurance and pay out of pocket. That way, when the assignment ends, you won’t lose your insurance.

Why Colorado?

The are countless reasons why you should find a travel nursing position in Colorado. First, Colorado is part of the eNLC (Enhanced Nursing Licensure Compact). The eNLC allows nurses to hold one license to practice in participating states without having to pay additional licensing fees. For those nurses that hold primary residence in an eNLC state, traveling to Colorado can be simple. As a non-resident of an eNLC state, you can apply for licensure by endorsement but will only be issued a single-state license instead of the compact license. Nurses can hold multiple single-state licenses.

Colorado continues to see growth in the travel nursing market. A 2021 study found that while Colorado currently has a nursing gap of around 2,600 nurses, that number will grow to a projected gap of more than 10,000 nurses by 2026. Beyond the needs at the bedside, travel nurses in Colorado can expect adventure in both the summer and winter.

Travel nursing offers a unique work experience with the opportunity to earn above-average hourly wages. These wages may even exceed those of other registered nurses (RNs) with the same education and credentials.

Travel nurses are typically employed by travel nursing agencies and work assignments across the country wherever nurses are needed. Because each assignment is different, the total annual income for travel nurses can vary significantly. Factors include the details of the pay package, where the assignment is located, and nursing specialty.

On this page you will find the most recent information about travel RN salaries, benefits, specialties, and the states with a high demand for travel nurses.

Fast Facts About Travel Nurses

  • Travel nurses generally earn as much or more than staff nurses with the same experience and qualifications.
  • Lodging reimbursement and tax advantages impact travel nursing salaries.
  • The most in-demand travel nursing specialties include labor and delivery, emergency room, and medical-surgical/telemetry.

The average travel nurse salary varies greatly depending on the work assignment. Depending on travel location, these practitioners can earn between $3,000 and $7,000 per week, averaging a 36-hour work week. According to Vivian , a healthcare jobs marketplace, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), travel nurses earn jan average of $2,183 per week, while RNs earn a mean hourly wage of $42.80. However, aspiring travel nurses should note that living on the road leads to additional personal expenses, so the increase in pay accounts for living accommodations.

Max Weekly Pay

Average Total Weekly Pay

Source: Vivian , September 2023

Travel nurse pay differs from full-time nursing positions because agencies offer hourly rates for each assignment, meaning RNs can shop around and find opportunities with ideal pay. In contrast, RNs working full time at hospitals, physicians’ offices, and other facilities usually rely on raises or additional education to increase their earning potential.

Practitioners considering this role also need to explore what take-home pay looks like for travel nurses . Nursing agencies set their own conditions, so pay packages vary. For instance, organizations may offer an hourly base pay with additional stipends to cover housing or meals, while other companies may offer a higher hourly rate to account for additional expenses.

Travel nurse salaries vary by state and region. Locations in need of RNs typically offer more competitive wages. In fact, the popularity of a particular region can influence travel nurses’ earning potential. Less popular locations may pay more, while desirable locations may pay less. Likewise, states with a higher cost of living offer higher wages relative to living costs.

According to 2023 data from Vivian, the top-paying states for travel RNs included New Jersey , California, and Alaska. Practitioners also want to consider the highest-paying specialties to determine earning potential which may vary by state. The following section includes the top specialties in demand.

Highest Paying Travel Nurse Specialities

Typically, nursing specialties that lack licensed practitioners offer more pay than other specialties, which further increases earning potential for travel nurses. Higher acuity facilities also offer higher pay, as they need skilled practitioners who can meet their patients’ needs. Here are five in-demand specialties for travel nurses.

Labor and Delivery

Emergency room, medical-surgical/telemetry, critical care – intensive care unit, operating room registered nurse, 4 ways to increase pay as a travel nurse.

While travel nurse pay may exceed traditional full-time RN salaries, travel nurses can additionally increase their earning potential by considering factors like demand for specialties, understaffed or unpopular shifts, and locations in need of skilled RNs.

Travel nurses should examine the full benefits package to determine if jobs can provide sufficient take-home pay. For instance, regions with a high cost of living may impact how much practitioners actually earn if stipends do not cover all costs.

Frequently Asked Questions: Travel Nursing Salaries

How much does a traveling nurse make per year.

Travel nurse salaries vary significantly, especially since the outbreak of COVID-19. Factors that can influence earning potential include geographic location and specialty. However, travel RNs should anticipate working 46 weeks a year and earning about $2,183 on a weekly basis .

Do travel nurses get paid more?

Travel nurses typically earn more than full-time salaried RNs because they often take job assignments where there is a nursing shortage. Travel nurse agencies also pay practitioners by the hour and offer additional benefits, including housing and meal stipends.

Is travel nursing worth the money?

Travel nurses generally earn more than salaried RNs. However, practitioners should consider their lifestyle as well. For instance, an RN with a family may not feel the additional pay outweighs time at home, while another practitioner may find the pay suitable and enjoy the travel opportunities.

Do travel nurses get time off?

Travel nurses often do not receive time off since they work hourly and take temporary job assignments. While assignments vary, travel nurses should plan to work for 8-26 weeks at a time. Most travel nurses schedule time off between job assignments.

A northern Colorado rancher tossing bales of hay to cattle was killed when he was struck by lightning on Saturday, authorities said. The bolt also killed 34 members of the herd he was feeding.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Mike Morgan, 51, was feeding more than 100 of his cattle that were standing around his trailer when lightning struck, the Colorado Sun reported.

The impact killed Morgan and knocked the animals off their feet, George Crocket, the Jackson County coroner, told the newspaper.

“The 32 cattle did not get back up,” Crocket told the Sun . “As best I can tell, it hit him on the trailer. The cattle were bunched up around the trailer and it hit them all.”

The incident occurred in the town of Rand, about 120 miles northwest of Denver, a sheriff’s office spokesperson told KCNC-TV .

Morgan, his wife and father-in-law had just finished branding the cattle and were feeding them when lightning struck at about 2:08 p.m. MDT, the Sun reported. His wife and father-in-law survived the strike.

Crocket told the newspaper it was one of the worst lightning strikes he had witnesses. He said that a strike once killed seven cattle at his grandfather’s ranch.

“I’ve seen horses get killed, but it’s usually one at a time,” Crocket told the Sun .

Morgan was on the board of the North Park Stockgrowers Association, according to the newspaper.

“Our deepest condolences go out to family and friends during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release obtained by KDVR-TV .

The National Weather Service has kept records of  lightning-related deaths and injuries in Colorado  from 1980 to 2021, according to the television station. It was the first time a strike had been recorded in Jackson County during that time.

How I Manage My Money: Nurse, on £1.7k a month, who puts travel before pension

Matilda taylor has her dream job in the nhs but much of her salary is eaten up by rent.

colorado travel nurse pay

In our How I Manage My Money series we aim to find out how people in the UK are spending, saving and investing money to meet their costs and achieve their goals.

This week we speak to Matilda Taylor, 24, who lives in Brixton, London, with her boyfriend, who is 25 and works as a management consultant. Matilda is working in her dream job as a children’s nurse in the NHS , but makes extra money via an app working at events. She thinks she would need a six-figure deposit to buy her own home and can’t see herself getting on the property ladder until she is over 30.

Monthly budget My monthly income: I earn around £1,720 per month after deductions from my job as a children’s nurse in the NHS. I also make between £200 to £550 a month from my work via Pioneering People. My share of the monthly outgoings: Rent, £1,000 – our rent is £2,000 in total; council tax, just under £100; utility bills, around £95; mobile phone, £15; student loan from salary, around £100; money into cash ISA, this varies a lot, but generally around £20 to £50 a month when possible; money into work pension, around £200; holidays, eating out and socialising, around £300, but often lower. As a couple, we spend about £200 per week on groceries.

I grew up in London and my parents worked as management consultants. I studied nursing at university and got a job as a children’s nurse at an NHS hospital earlier this year. I really enjoy it and my take-home pay from this job is about £1,720 per month.

On top of my full-time job, I have a side-hustle, which I started earlier this year. I take on work via Pioneering People, which matches me for different short-term jobs near where I live. I work at events and help set them up and serve drinks. The lowest I’ve been paid for an event was about £13.50 per hour. The pay comes through really quickly. I try to do a few events and jobs each month and my side-hustle adds around £200 to £550 per month to my income. In this day and age, it’s normal for people, particularly Gen Z , to have a side-hustle.

The extra money from my side-hustle is really useful, particularly in a cost of living crisis . I don’t have to worry so much about my monthly expenses and bills. If I’m going to people’s weddings or heading away on holiday, I don’t have to scrimp and save so much any more.

Trebling rents and prices changing daily: life in the country with 300% inflation

Trebling rents and stickered over prices: life in the country with 300% inflation

I am currently renting a one-bedroom flat with my boyfriend. The rent is £2,000 a month and I pay a share of £1,000 per month. I’d have a very different life if our rent wasn’t so expensive. Our landlord has mentioned that a future rent increase could be on the cards, which is very worrying.

As I’ve only recently started working full-time, I haven’t even thought about owning my own home just yet. It’s not on my agenda. I think I would need a six-figure deposit and can’t see myself getting on the housing ladder until I’m over 30. At the moment I’m enjoying my work and home life, and try not to get too stressed about the future.

I don’t put aside a lot of money in savings, but do have a cash ISA with Barclays, which I try to add £20 to £50 a month to when I can. I’d like to be able to add £100 to £200 to it every month. I like to keep my savings, including my cash ISA, in easy access accounts, so I can take the money out if or when I need to.

As I’ve only recently graduated I haven’t thought much about my pension or how much money I might need in it by the time I retire. The NHS pension is good, but I know I will need to increase my contributions to my work pension as I get older. I add about £200 a month to my work pension now. Having an auto-enrolment scheme in place is a good idea.

I’ve only recently started my job at the hospital and am keen to save money where I can. I’m hardly ever at home, so that helps us save money on utility bills! I used to get a coffee on the way to work each month, but stopped doing this. I enjoy travelling a lot, but always search for the best deal available.

Money is important to me, as I feel it is to everybody living in London. It’s expensive here, but there is also so much to do and explore with the money that you do make. My job as a nurse is so important to me that I would not replace it with a career which would enable me to make more money. I’m glad I can work in my dream job while earning a little extra money on the side.

In terms of financial goals, all I want to do at the moment is travel more. When I get annual leave I like to do city trips around Europe and understand more about different countries’ culture, history and food.

€85,000 age discrimination payout for nurse forced to retire at 66

The case “serves as a significant warning to employers” in relation to age-related discrimination, an employment lawyer has said

A ruling that a nursing home must pay €85,000 in compensation to a senior staff nurse for discriminating against her when forcing her to retire at the age of 66 “serves as a significant warning to employers” in relation to age-related discrimination, an employment lawyer has said.

Richard Grogan was commenting after the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) ordered the payout. Aideen Collard, the WRC adjudicator, said the award was “proportionate” in circumstances where the nursing home made no effort to comply with the Employment Equality Acts.

Collard said that the senior staff nurse “suffered stress and indignity” along with 11 months’ loss of earnings and denial of statutory redundancy and an ex-gratia payment. In evidence, the nurse put the loss of earnings over the 11 months at around €64,713, along with a statutory redundancy of approximately €7,500 and an ex-gratia payment of around €3,000.

Collard stated that from July 27, 2018, when the senior nurse was informed by letter by her employer that she would retire compulsorily on October 31, 2018 upon reaching her 65th birthday, “her employment was tainted with illegality and discrimination on the ground of age”.

The nursing home granted the senior nurse a one-year extension but Collard stated that when the senior nurse requested a further extension in writing, there was no meaningful engagement by the nursing home.

In her letter, the senior nurse manager wrote: “I am fit and able to work and have never been out on sick leave in the last five years, including in the last year.”

Collard said she fully accepted the nurse’s evidence that there was ample work available, particularly as the nursing home was recruiting agency and non-European Economic Area staff at the time of her dismissal. With an exemplary work record, the nurse was entirely capable of undertaking the work required, the adjudicator added.

The nurse alleged that the nursing home had acted unlawfully and in breach of the Employment Equality Acts on the ground of age including refusing to engage meaningfully with her in relation to her request to remain in employment for an additional year.

The nurse also claimed that the nursing home failed to show that its refusal to allow her to remain in employment corresponded to a real need and legitimate objective and was an appropriate or necessary means to achieve that objective.

The nurse stated that the decision not to renew her fixed-term contract amounted to discriminatory dismissal. She said that but for her age she would have remained in employment with the nursing home until it ceased trading.

The nursing home is subject to a High Court winding-up order and the appointed liquidator attended the WRC hearing in its place. However, no evidence was proffered in rebuttal of the senior nurse’s complaint.

Commenting on the case, Dublin-based solicitor, Richard Grogan, a Dublin-based solicitor, said the “substantial” award served as a significant warning to employers of the need to comply with employment equality legislation concerning age discrimination.

He said: “The days of someone who has got to 65 and is going to retire have well and truly ceased. The 65 age was historically picked because that was the old age pension age and there was no other reason.”

Grogan, who was not involved in the case, said that the nurse will receive the €85,000 despite the nursing home company being in liquidation.

“This lady is guaranteed payment of the award through the EU Insolvency Directive and will be paid from the insolvency fund,” he said.
