Ford V10 to 12-Valve Cummins Conversion

We had the bright idea putting a 2nd generation 12-valve Cummins in our 2000 F350 to replace the depleted V10. So with a little help (a lot) from DieselConversion .com , we managed to pull it off without too many hiccups.

With a little over 100,000 miles on the truck, we thought it would be a great application, taking our weakling of  a truck to a diesel monster.

We did some serious looking to find the right motor, right mileage, right year, etc….

At this point, it would be good to mention that the parts that were used to make this conversion possible were provided by DieselConversion.com . In the above picture, the obvious would be the un-rusty header that clocks the turbo downward for clearance in the Ford.

Before we made it look all pretty, we had to do some enhancements of which included installing a piece of metal to keep the “killer pin” from working its way out and reeking havoc.

Transfer case had to come out reason being that our transmission needed some work.

It was a little difficult clearing the oil pan over the cross member with the cab still on the truck.

Our particular truck spent its early life in the north with heavy snow fall, salt had taken its toll on the underside. So we cleaned it up and did some painting.

The old V10 that came out of the truck had an issues with the cam shaft being worn in the block. It would produce a knock on cold start which would go away as soon as it was warm. Power was also definitely lacking.

Our Ford 4R100 transmission needed some serious work, so we had it beefed up pretty good to deal with the extra diesel torque.

Like a glove…it started out with plenty of room but got crowded once it was all in there.

ECU help with 12 valve Cummins swap

I am in the planning stages of a 12 valve swap. Haven't bought a truck yet, but am actively shopping for one! Preferably a 05-07. It WILL be a 6-speed. I did buy a 97 180hp Cummins already. Anyway, I have some questions for y'all: With all the possible sensors hooked up, can I get a "tune" to turn the check engine light off? Will the Integrated Trailer-brake Controller still function? I would really like to be able to control the 6.0 VGT. I can adapt the turbo to fit, if it is worth the trouble. Any helpful information regarding the tuning aspects of it would be great.  

Nobody has any information on this? Can anybody point me in the right direction of who to talk to?

I c your trying to turn the check engine light off on the cummins with a tune it isnt possible the 12 valves are completely mechanically tuned motors short of the tps and fuel shut off solenoid hope that helps  

Surely the computer can be flashed to only show a CEL at startup. Here is what I am trying to do: I want it to at least pass the ODB II part of an emissions test. I am also going to be running a Catalytic convertor and muffler. Under the hood I will be trying to make that 12-valve look as it came there originally. Yes I know it will never pass a tailpipe sniffer test, but I would atleast like it to pass everything else. No they don't really do emission testing in my area, yet! But I am planning to be keeping this truck forever. Here the Highway Patrol is known to pull you over for a visual. And they even ticketed my best friend $116 for Faulty equipment/no muffler on a 96 Ford. His hole reason for getting stopped was the trooper said it sounded as if the convertor was cut off and only had the muffler. When he crawled up under the truck (2WD with small tires and lowered 2" in the rear) he found the converter was there but muffler deleted.  

Your not getting it the p pump 12 valve is a COMPLETELY mechanical motor to the point you can unhook the batteries after you start it and run it just the same as far as the ford portion of the truck im not as well versed but id imagine there will be all kinds of confusion on the computers side  

The p pump unmolested is epa approved as well if unmolested your 180 pump is at 12.5* timing and no where near out side emmisions stamdard i wouldnt sweat it  

I will for sure talk to DeStroke about this too. I just talked to them 5-1-15 about my swap stuff. I will be getting my Adapter, Spacer, Flywheel, Mounts, Manifold, Turbo, Downpipe, and Tach adapter from them.  

bowmanjoel23 I understand the 12-valve is full mechanical. I am just trying to pass it off (should the need arise one day) as a 100% stock/complete/functioning FORD. To the people in Atlanta and those select New-England areas, What do I need to do to sneek it by the emission testers?  

since you mention emissions so much you may already be screwing yourself your putting an older year motor in your o6 so your not compliant since that motor did not meet the same emission standards the 06 did going same year or newer is safer and what I would have done but I know you wanted a 12 v so I am just mentioning a possible future hurdle  

Z mann is right again they WILL be looking for specific more current emmisions equipment on an 06 that were not available in a 97  

You will never pass emissions testing. You will never pass the PCM check, nor the visual inspection. Nor will you have the federal emissions sticker that states it meets all emissions requirements for the year of manufacture.  

Could I claim it is a 24 valve? What if I use an older truck like say a 2002 an say it is a 2002 24-valve? Remember I have not bought a truck yet, just the motor. I for sure want a 99+ Super Duty.  

Depends on the state you live in but when they run that vin your stuff better be correct honestly your opening a can of worms you dont want to when you said yourself your state doesnt even test

if a mechanic sees a ford super duty with a cummins in it, no matter what year dodge it came out of, and doesn't immediately recognize its an engine swap, is no mechanic i would want behind the wheel of my truck. inspection or actually issues, no thank you. you aren't the first person to try to put an engine swap through an inspection and act like its stock. it isn't going to work( unless you know the inspector). get with destroked, and they will get you what you need to make the swap look factory. as far as inspections/emissions goes... if it isn't from the same year or newer it will automatically fail. if the inspector doesn't know any better about swaps, he will still know to look for the EGR in a 2003 or newer diesel truck. good luck and god speed.  

Well, I do have a truck, 3 of them actually! 2001 XL 7.3 dually. Spins but no oil pressure. LPOP is not putting out a drop. 2005 f250. 2005 XLT 5.4 4x4. Runs good but timing chains are making a TON of noise. I will either fix the 2005 5.4 truck and sell it to help offset the price of the other 2, or swap the transmission into my other 2005 that has been sitting since early 2014 when I robbed the transmission to fix my other 2005 truck. I am starting to think I might have an addiction to Super Duty trucks. I do have 6 of them now and one Excursion.

you missing out on the coil front end of the 05 up and the better turning radius  

Good looking out ZMANN, but 2WD. Now if I wanted 4WD I do have that coil sprung strait axle 2005 4x4 5.4 truck.

So what kind of paperwork has to be carried around to make say a 2001-02 24-valve legal? I am sure y'all can see where I am going with this. Can I put a 2001-02 valve cover and emission tag on my 97 12-valve and appear legal?  

And I am not trying to open a can of worms, I am trying to plan ahead. I am looking at it like; what if I spend all this time and money building another truck and love it, and then they start emission testings and I can't drive it anymore. The future what if really stems from my best friend getting pulled over in my little town for a Catalytic Convertor check.

Why not just build the 7.3? Not sure if it's just a "I want to put in a Cummins, because I think it's cool" thing or a "I want to put in a Cummins, because I want it to be dependable" thing or a "just 'cause" thing. If it's the middle one, IMO, you'd be better off just building the 7.3.  

24 valve cover will not fit a 12 valve ... The oil fill on the 24 valve is on the valve cover and on the 12 valve its on the timing case

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Ford 6.0 auto to 12 valve cummins zf6 conversion

Hello I’m new here. I looking for a few answers to questions I’ve been searching for and have been unable to find. Background is I acquired this 2003 f250 that has a 12 valve industrial Cummins with a zf6 and electronic shift transfer case. Truck was originally an auto transmission and this truck is still using the auto transmission pcm. Truck is not done it has the destroked kit for the sensors, tach and mounts. One of my questions is will the speedometer work? Knowing the 5r110 and an output speed sensor and the zf6 does not. If not how can I get that to work? Also how will I get the electronic shift transfer case to work as designed ? I also am unsure of the AC. I believe the pcm need to see rpm which is will when done. Basically I want everything to work as it should. thank in advance for any info.

Yes the speedo will work, it’s driven by the sensor on the rear diff that counts the teeth on the tone ring bolted by the ring gear. The electronic shift transfer case will require a certain wire to be grounded to get 4x4 low to work ( 4hi will work with doing nothing). You’ll need to get a factory wiring diagram manual to figure out what color wire to ground because Ford changed the color of that wire through the years and with what the original drivetrain was. The PCM will need to see the engine running to allow the AC clutch to engage. DCS sells a complete plug-n-play wiring harness that includes a swap helper brand tach helper. It’s expensive to buy the ready made plug-n-play version, but you can buy the tach helper separately and do the wiring yourself if you want. …  

Thank you so much for the information. I do have the destroked tone wheel and sensor. I have that wired up and it does show rpm. I just haven’t been able to drive it yet as transmission is currently out of truck. I do have the factory wiring manual and am absolutely capable not wiring it myself. I plan to use all the ford sensors. I plan to even use the auto trans temp sensor to keep the “check gauges” light off.  

Good luck with the 5r110 trans temp sensor. It’s inside the transmission and its 0-5 volt range is reversed from most other temp sensors out there. …  

Yup. I have a junk 5r110 at my shop. And I plan to grab the pigtail and sensor and just wire it to the pcm and leave it in the engine compartment hidden just so the pcm sees it. I haven’t been able to find anybody that has been able to mount the auto TFT sensor to the zf6. I understand how the TFT mounts in the 5R110.  

I’m running an nv4500 where a 5r110 used to be in my Excursion. I don’t recall if I pulled the LED for the check gauges light or not ( I know I pulled the check engine LED out of the cluster). Just breaking the led off the cluster board might be a little on the redneck / hack side, but it works and it’s free. I tried swapping a cluster from a manual trans truck into the Excursion but a few CAN bus issues resulted ( like the interior lights wouldn’t work and the radio wouldn’t shut off when you opened the door). If you’re good with Forscan (or another similar program) you might be able to reprogram the BCM for the manual truck cluster. No place I’ve found has said they could do it, and of course Ford won’t program a manual transmission cluster to an Excursion because they never offered the Excursion with a manual trans. …  

Oh thank for answering another question I I didn’t even ask. About the check engine light. Are the led’s soldered in the board?  

I assume so, I just broke the LEDs off the board with needle nose pliers. Didn’t take a lot of effort. …

There was no check gauges light with the auto trans removed and manual swapped with auto computer and a 12 valve. The gauge just reads right right in the middle without anything hooked up.
