Tips for Buying Travel Hat Boxes

Determine the best size and shape.

It’s important to consider how many hats you’ll want to pack before determining the best hat box for your purposes, as various options have different capacities. Measure your largest and widest hat to make sure it fits inside the selected case.

How you plan to carry your hat case is important as well. If you’re hoping to place it inside a checked suitcase, make sure to measure the hat box against your suitcase first to ensure it fits. If you plan to tote it separately as a carry-on or personal item, look for adjustable shoulder straps in a wide width for comfort.

Choose the proper material

Hardshell hat boxes will be the most protective, however, they also tend to be a heavier option. If you’re traveling by plane, you may want to invest in a hardside case that can withstand being jostled around. Water-resistant cases are also great for mass-transit travel as they can keep items safe from unexpected spills.

If you’re traveling by car, you may be OK with a softside case, which will be easier to carry. Soft cases are also perfect for closet storage, as they help keep hats organized and shielded from dust.

Hat boxes have rigid sides so hats don’t get crumbled and smushed in your luggage. The shape of a hat box should reflect the type of hat you’re carrying — for example, wide-brim hat boxes tend to be large and round, while hat cases meant for baseball caps tend to be smaller. A hat box will keep your accessory separate and secure from any potentially damaging sharp objects or liquids in your luggage (or elsewhere). Hat boxes can also keep your hats protected from dust while you store them in your closet at home.

If your hat box has a shoulder strap, you may wish to use it as a personal item or carry-on in order to save suitcase space. Many hat boxes will be able to accommodate other small items — such as sunglasses or wallets — so be sure to check the capacity if you’re hoping to stash a few extras in the case as well.

If you want to check your hat box on its own, we recommend a hardshell hat box as those will be best able to withstand the jostling around that happens on a luggage belt or on a plane. Make sure the hat box has secure zippers or clasps, and that you detach any straps before checking the case.

If you have a smaller, more lightweight hat box, you may opt to put it inside your checked suitcase. An alternative way to carry a single hat you plan to wear most of the time is by using a hat clip, which you can secure to the outside of a bag. They come in a variety of price points and styles, from simple clips to fancy leather options.

It can suck to travel with hats. Trust us — we have to do it pretty often.

Hat-wearing jet-setters are often forced to choose between four pretty poor options:

• Travel without a hat:   Not an option — NEXT.
• Wear the hat:   This works   pretty well,   if you don't have to stash it in the overhead bin. It also only works if you're bringing one hat — and a guy's gotta have options. 
• Shoved into checked suitcase:   Throw caution to the wind and hope they come out looking remotely like they did when they went in.
• Delicately packed in checked suitcase:  Stuffing the crown with underwear and socks sounds like a great idea on the   first leg of your trip when they're clean, but do you really want to do the same on the way home?

Enter the Two Roads Hat Travel Case. As frequent travelers ourselves, we designed this bag from the ground up, taking much of our hard-earned experience and creating a go-to companion for hat-wearer's young and old.

So what did we design into this simple-yet-robust travel case?

The Travel Case fits both in overhead storage and (usually) beneath the seat in front of you. We can't promise it will fit in every one, but we haven't found one yet that it won't fit under.

I really appreciate this hat case to carry my Fedora Hats when I travel but the sturdiness inside the case is not the best. In the video you provided to put the case together there's a small center piece that was installed that didn't come with case. Maybe that one little piece would've made the case more sturdy when carrying... I really love the case it's the best hat case in the game!!!

How to Measure Hat Size

Women's hat sizes are fairly intuitive. The average women's head size measures around 57cm. If you are unsure of your hat size the Gigi Pip small/medium hat would be the best starting point. The small/medium hat size is made to fit 57cm + can be adjusted down to 55cm. If you know you have a slightly larger head go with the 59cm size. As far as Gigi Pip sizing goes this is a medium/large, made to fit a 59cm head size + then can be adjusted down to 57cm. The largest size Gigi Pip offers is a 61 cm, labeled as an XL, like our other sizes the 61 can be sized down to 59 cm. For women who feel they have a slightly smaller head than normal we recommend an XS which begins at 55cm + can be sized down to 53 cm. In select styles we offer kids sizing which begins at 53 cm + can be adjusted to 51 cm.

There are two primary methods of measuring your hat size + are based on the style in which you wear your hat. You will need to take both measurements (shown below) + then use the larger of the two measurements to determine your hat size. Once you've received your hat, you can decide how you would like to wear it + adjust your hat size accordingly.

TIP: If you don't have a textile measuring tape, use a string or piece of yarn to measure the distance around your head. After you have marked the yarn around your head, lay it out flat on the ground or table + measure the straightened out piece of yarn with a measuring stick or regular measuring tape.

• Use a textile measuring tape (or string) to measure the distance around your head crossing through the center part of the back of your head + the forehead just above the eyebrow. The tape should be level with the ground.
• Check the measurement of the tape wrapped around your head. Hat sizing is in cm. If you are in-between sizes, we suggest sizing up + adjusting your hat accordingly.

• Use a textile measuring tape to measure the distance around your head passing through the back of your head, just above the neck, + the front of your head high on the brow. The tape should be higher in front than in back.
• Check the measurement of the tape wrapped around your head. Wearing a hat Halo style is usually a smaller hat size than wearing a hat traditionally. Since there is typically a difference in measurement we recommend using the larger of the two hat sizes. If you are in-between sizes, we suggest sizing up and adjusting down.

Adjustable Inner Band Instructions

Flip up the sweatband to find the Velcro tab + pull to tighten. Velcro the ribbon back in place to secure your desired fit. The adjustable band can adjust the hat up to 5 cm when necessary! Some helpful tips about our adjustable inner band-

Hat Sizing Tape Instructions

Hat sizing tape is an additional option for tightening the fit of your hat. Place the foam tape on the inside of your hat, behind the sweatband, with the sticky side facing towards the hat wall. Wrap the tape completely around the hat for maximum size decrease or cut tape length in half for a more moderate decrease. Size to fit prior to removing the adhesive cover. Once the fit is correct, remove the adhesive cover, press firmly into place, and wa-lah.
