Kentucky Derby Museum Questions & Answers

Is there a dress code for visiting and touring? I'm seeing a dress code for Churchill Downs and we are hoping to check out the museum and tour on our way back from a trip in Gatlinburg, TN of which I didn't pack more than shorts and jeans. Thanks for your help in advance. Last minute detour on the way back to the Chicago suburbs.

The Museum is very casual! If you join in the historic walking tour (included with general admission) or add on one of our additional tours there is a lot of walking--and much of it on cobblestone/paver areas of the racetrack, so good walking shoes are a must! The dress code is mainly for visiting Churchill Downs in certain clubhouses and other areas on live racing days.

No dress code when we were there on a Wednesday (no races on Wednesday, but everything else was open). People were dressed casual, summer shorts, etc.

I wanted to follow up and thank everyone for their help. Our last minute trip with casual attire to the museum was totally fine. The additional tours were sold out for the day prior to our arrival, they cap at 15 people. The 30 minute (included) walking tour was good and I'm thankful for having that experience but next time I'd like to do and learn a little more behind the scenes (I grew up with horses in the backyard and still ride, so I love horse stuff). Our kids 10 and 13 years old had fun with simulator racing, placing bets, watching the 360 degree movie, etc within the museum. Well worth the stop while passing through. We stayed at the Hyatt on 4th street. 4th street seemed to be hopping until after 12:00 am- we were hungry so we found a restaurant on fourth street after we checked in at 10pm. It looked fun with piano bars etc. Security checked our ID just to walk into the general area of restaurants and bars on the street. I know this is more info but I hope this is helpful for others. No dress code. Basic tour of the track is included with Museum Entry.

Casual attire is acceptable for the museum and general admission to the grand stands. A more in depth dress code only applies to specific suites.

There is certainly no dress code for the museum/tour. T-shirts and shorts were the norm. I can't speak for some of the high end clubhouse areas, but if you just want to visit the museum, take the tour and/or see some races, there is no dress code.

Go online to the Kentucky Derby site and it gives a dress code, come to find out it is only on the Big Derby day.

There shouldn't be a problem at all. The dress code is for the races. At the Museum, it's standard tourist attire. If you've seen any news coverage of the Derby, you've probably seen a lot of folks in elegant dress for the Derby. One of the popular exhibits is fancy, colorful (and unusual) Derby hats! Enjoy!

Jeans are definitely ok for the museum. I took my class there and they wore jeans. I would think shorts would be too if they are of a reasonable length,but you might want to call ahead just to be sure.

20 Written and Unwritten Rules Kentucky Derby Guests Must Follow

It's a classy affair.

The race, which is always held on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs in Louisville , Kentucky, is steeped in southern tradition, from the freely flowing bourbon to the preppy fashion—think florals, pastels, and plenty of seersucker. Although the Derby has frequently been dubbed the greatest two minutes in sports, the event is truly a day-long affair, with gates opening nearly twelve hours before the race.

Here are 20 written and unwritten rules for Derby-goers, from dressing to impress to leaving the selfie stick at home.

Attendees can only bet with cash.

Kentucky state law prohibits betting with a credit card, which means " cash is king " at the Derby. Although there are plenty of ATMs on the premises, lines can understandably get rather long as spectators line up to place their wagers, so it's best to come prepared.

Lost tickets are not honored.

After placing bets, Derby-goers should safely stow away their tickets to collect post-race winnings. If a ticket gets lost, there's no way to cash in.

Guests cannot go in and out of Churchill Downs as they please.

Visitors should make sure they have everything they need before entering the facility, because according to official policy , "Patrons are not permitted to leave Churchill Downs and return on the same ticket."

Upscale attire is expected.

Although some Derby-goers opt for laid-back looks (they're likely headed for the infield, where the atmosphere is a bit more casual), the Derby's official dress code states that "upscale attire" is encouraged.

But flip-flops aren't necessarily frowned upon.

Although spectators might be tempted to wear a sleek heel, when spending the entire day at the track it's best to consider comfort with a pair of sandals, espadrilles, or—if you need additional height for optimal viewing—a manageable wedge. Chances are, there could be mud, so Derby fashion experts —perhaps unexpectedly—encourage packing a pair of flip-flops as backup.

Hats are essentially required.

One of the Derby's unwritten rules is that women must wear a hat. After all, it's a sign of good luck, Louisville milliner Jenny Pfanenstiel told Forbes .

Zanna Roberts Rassi, editor of the Kentucky Derby Style Guide , actually recommends starting with the hat when it comes to perfecting a Derby Day look. We've rounded up our top picks here , from fascinators to embellished sun hats.

And they shouldn't be smushed.

If guests are traveling by plane to the Derby, experts from America's Best Racing recommend packing hats in a cardboard box to ensure the airline will classify them as cargo to be deservedly treated with care. Others suggest shipping hats to Louisville ahead of time, or even preordering headwear from a local milliner for pick-up upon arrival.

Men have a dress code too.

Although women's hats are usually the topic of sartorial conversation at the Derby, men are encouraged to wear a topper of their choice too—whether it's a straw fedora, a vintage flat seersucker cap, or a custom ornate number. The Derby's official dress code also recommends that male attendees opt for a suit.

Smoking is prohibited.

While lighting up cigars is a Derby tradition for everyone from spectators to elated horse owners and trainers after a big win, Churchill Downs has recently begun to crack down on smoking. It has officially been banned in indoor areas, any outdoor location where food is served, and at the Spires Terrace for fear that smoke residue will damage the historic building.

Spectators can't bring their own cocktails.

While cocktails and Derby Day may be synonymous, guests cannot bring their own alcohol into Churchill Downs. Luckily, the mint juleps (or, if you prefer vodka over bourbon, the Oaks Lily , a.k.a. the official cocktail of the Kentucky Oaks) are free flowing once visitors enter. Just remember to imbibe responsibly. While the horses are sprinting, the day is a marathon.

Umbrellas are not allowed.

The Derby has never been cancelled or postponed due to weather—and despite the rain-or-shine nature of the event, umbrellas are not permitted inside Churchill Downs. Instead, veteran Derby attendees suggest packing a clear, foldable rain poncho so Derby outfits are still on full display.

But spectators can opt to sit undercover.

Nine-time Derby-goer Dana O'Neill recommends scoring a seat undercover in the grandstand. Not only are guests protected from the elements there—whether it's extreme sun or pouring rain—but they'll also have a birds-eye view of the big event.

There are no ticket refunds.

Sadly, in the event that plans change, tickets are non-refundable . That being said, it's possible to resell tickets through the Kentucky Derby's official resale platform.

And no re-issued tickets either.

Although all Kentucky Derby tickets are now accessible digitally to avoid hiccups, Churchill Downs has a strict policy that states they will not re-issue lost or forgotten tickets "due to the sheer size of the event." There are also no will-call booths at Churchill Downs.

Guests can't access Wi-Fi.

While Derby-goers take plenty of photos at the event, they likely have to wait until they get home to post them on social media. Why? There's no Wi-Fi at Churchill Downs, and the facility has also noted that cell service is pretty unpredictable. All the better to live in the moment and take in the event, right?

Professional cameras, tripods, and selfie sticks are a no-go.

Speaking of photos, tripods, selfie sticks, and professional cameras are not allowed at the Derby. Although cell phone photos are permitted, spectators are restricted from bringing cameras with detachable lenses, as well as any type of photo equipment that comes complete with a stick or pole.

And please, no flash photography.

While spectators could probably get away with using flash when taking photos in the grandstands, they're asked (by Derby sign maker Todd Herl ) not to use flash photography near the thoroughbreds and riders—for safety reasons, of course.

Large bags are prohibited.

Like most major sporting events, the Kentucky Derby follows a strict bag policy . Though visitors might be tempted to bring a sizable bag to carry rain gear, comfortable shoes, and other essentials, purses larger than 12" x 6" x 12" are banned, along with backpacks and luggage.

Spectators should not necessarily expect a perfect view of the track.

Over 150,000 people pack into Churchill Downs for the Derby. Although massive screens have been installed to allow the maximum amount of spectators to watch the Run for the Roses, it's important to note that some seats offer limited or obstructed views of the track.

Signs are not permitted.

Although some people attend the Kentucky Derby to root for a specific horse, there are no banners or signs allowed in the grandstand on race day. The official policy does allow for pre-approved exceptions for passionate Derby-goers.

All right, ladies, we've come into the home stretch — it's time to get serious about what you'll wear for the 149th running of the  Kentucky Derby .

Whether you plan to watch the horse races from inside the historic  Churchill Downs racetrack, or with family and friends at a Derby-themed party, there is nothing quite as grand as dressing for the "Run for the Roses." 

Louisville-based fashion consultant Jo Ross is a pro when it comes to advising women (and men) on their Kentucky Derby Day wardrobe. For more than 25 years, she's been a regular at New York City's iconic Fashion Week and  Prêt a Porter in Paris .

Ross combines designer trends with a splash of traditional Southern belle to create the perfect Kentucky Derby look. After all, running a close second to the thoroughbreds on the track, the biggest show at the Kentucky Derby is the fashion.

So here's your "dress code" guide for what you should wear at Churchill Downs.

Is there a Churchill Downs dress code?

You want to look fabulous when you are off to the races and that means checking your tickets to know where you are seated. It's important to review the official Churchill Downs dress code for specific areas of the racetrack.

For instance, if your seats are located in the Finish Line Suites, you are asked to dress "business casual." That means dresses, pantsuits, capri pants and slacks are appropriate. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts halter tops, athletic wear and tennis shoes are not permitted.

Other sections at the track suggest you dress "smart casual" or "track casual."

There is no dress code for guests purchasing a reserved box or general admission tickets to Churchill Downs, however, management reserves the right to deny admission to anyone whose attire they consider to be inappropriate.

There are more than 30 different locations at Churchill Downs with specific dress code requirements. To find more detail on appropriate attire and requirements for the section where you will be attending the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, visit  churchilldowns.com .

Picking the perfect Kentucky Derby hat

A hat is a right of passage at the Kentucky Derby. When people think of fashion at the races, they often think about big, bold, beautiful hats and fascinators.

It's your personal preference whether it's extravagant or understated, but wearing one is most definitely encouraged, regardless of where you'll be sitting. There are oodles of milliners who specialize in the style of hat worn to the spring meet races, including The Hat Girls ,  Jenny Pfanenstiel  and  Christine A. Choose spring dresses for your Kentucky Derby outfit

You can't lose when you wear a flirty spring dress. Polished, comfortable and functional — especially when you're wearing one with pockets to hold your cash and betting tickets — nothing beats a beautiful lightweight dress at the Derby. 

But keep in mind, there's no rule that says you have to wear a dress, though most women do.

"Some women are more comfortable in pants and that is fine, too. There are all kinds of fun pants for instance, black with big yellow flowers or high-waisted with big full legs, fitted pants suits and jumpsuits," Ross said. "But absolutely do not wear your favorite skinny jeans or leggings, no matter how comfortable — they are not appropriate for the Kentucky Derby."

Go monochrome with a black and white Kentucky Derby outfit

We always see a lot of black and white at the track. It's a trend that returns year after year.

"Black and white or navy and white are traditional spectator color combinations at the race track," said Ross. "They are always in style." 

If you want to "Derby up" a black and white or navy and white theme, it's a great idea to add a splash of color in your hat and handbag.

New in 2023, all white dressing with a pop of color in your accessories will feel fresh and on-trend. 

Remember the Kentucky Derby is a day-long party and you want to feel festive. For some, it's a day to mix patterns in an interesting way.

"For instance, create a black and white outfit mixing florals, stripes or dots," Ross said. "But the key to this look is making sure the prints are in different proportions." 

Add some bright, springtime colors to your Kentucky Derby outfit

While Black and white and navy are always classic combinations at the racetrack, let's keep in mind we're in Kentucky where bright colors and florals are a springtime favorite. The Kentucky Derby gives you an opportunity to take spring fashion to the next level and really push the envelope.

"Think of the vibrant colors of the jockey silks (the jacket and cap worn by a jockey in a race)," Ross said. "We love color in Kentucky because it's bright and fun and we love floral prints." 

This year color trends are bursting with color, even brighter than in the past. Think neon yellows, Kelly green, vibrant blues and always lots of brilliant pink.

Wear the hemline that makes you comfortable for Kentucky Derby 2023

Hemlines crept ever higher on the spring 2023 runways and you can be sure they'll show up at Churchill Downs. 

Mini hemlines are great news if you've got beautiful legs. Show them off in a short romper or sundress. It's Kentucky Derby so anything goes. 

Ross also recommends another Fashion Week trend for this year — longer hemlines with a flirty ruffle in breezy lightweight fabrics. We expect to see lots of long billowing skirts and dresses skimming the brinks on the way to the Paddock. 

Churchill Downs bag size restrictions won't derail your Kentucky Derby outfit

Petite handbags are a subtle addition that gives your Kentucky Derby outfit a posh and on-trend look. Sure, there will only be enough room for your credit card, a bit of cash, lipstick and a moderately sized cellphone, but Ross offers this fashionable solution.

"We have a rule here at the Churchill Downs that no purse can be more than 12 inches in any direction, but you can bring a tote bag," Ross said. "A lot of ladies like to keep a pair of flip flops or cute flats in the tote to slip into when their stilettos start to hurt."

You might want to include in that tote a pair of sunglasses, a small tube of sunscreen, a pen to keep track of your bets, tissues, a phone charger and a lightweight wrap for when the sunsets. 

How to dress for rain at the Kentucky Derby

Spring showers are very much a reality at the Kentucky Derby and we want you to be prepared just in case it rains (like it did by the bucket-full in 2018). 

"As much as we love Kentucky and it's beautiful, it does rain on occasion and if you are in the infield or the Paddock area for eight to 10 hours, it will be miserable if you aren't prepared," Ross said.

Keep in mind that umbrellas are not allowed at Churchill Downs, "so I suggest you have a 'bad weather' outfit on hand just in case. Find a fun water-repellent raincoat or a clear poncho (to let your cute Kentucky Derby outfit show) and water-repellent shoes or boots because if it does rain, you'll be delighted that you've got that." 

This reminds us: the Kentucky Derby is a long day of racing. Many people arrive before noon and will stay until 8 p.m. and then head out on the town. A lightweight coat or wrap is a good idea to keep you comfortable throughout the event.

Pick a Kentucky Derby outfit that makes you 'feel amazing'

Barn and Backside Tour

Did you know there’s a vibrant community of horses and horsemen who live and work on the Backside of Churchill Downs? (Yes, there’s even a church onsite!) In this guided van tour, you'll ride among the signature green-roofed barns that are home to 1,400 horses during the racing and training season. In addition to the horses, you’ll also see some of the hundreds of people who live and work on the Backside as they care for and train the world-class Thoroughbreds. You never know who you may see on the Backside – a legendary Derby trainer or even next year’s Triple Crown winner! Bring your camera for panoramic views of the racetrack, Grandstand, and the historic Twin Spires™.

The Barn and Backside Tour is a great tour for horse lovers, but please note that guests will not be able to touch the horses.

Visiting in Winter? The Backside looks a little different during the Winter season. Horses aren’t stabled at Churchill Downs from December – mid March, but you’ll still get plenty of insight for life on the Backside, plus an up close look at Triple Crown winner, Secretariat’s historic barn and stall.

A stellar field has turned out for the 156th Belmont S. (G1) at Saratoga this Saturday.

Seven of the 10 entrants are proven graded stakes winners, and for the first time since 2013, the Belmont features a rematch between Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winners. The 1 1/4-mile race is shaping up as an exciting conclusion to the 2024 Triple Crown.

Let's take a horse-by-horse tour through the field:

Mystik Dan will have every chance to reach the rail while breaking from post 3 in the Belmont, and the consistency he's shown against tough competition this spring suggests a top-three finish is within reach.

The Peter Pan is an important steppingstone to the Belmont, but Antiquarian's career-best 95 Brisnet Speed rating looks a little light against Saturday's field. He'll need another step forward to win the third leg of the Triple Crown.

He's a tough competitor on his best day, counting victories in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and Remsen (G2) on his record, so if he's able to beat Seize the Grey to the lead in the Belmont, there's a chance Dornoch will rebound in a big way.

He'll need a step forward to turn the tables on rivals like Resilience, Antiquarian, and The Wine Steward, but Protective has the pedigree to shine over 1 1/4 miles and may have upside for improvement.

But Sierra Leone was lugging in down the homestretch, as he's shown a tendency to do throughout his career, and like Honor Marie he must avoid falling too far off the Belmont pace in order to have the best shot at winning.

Mindframe is unbeaten and unchallenged in two starts, dominating a seven-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park by 13 3/4 lengths before wiring a Churchill Downs $100,000 allowance optional claimer by 7 1/2 lengths. There's clearly a world of talent here, and Mindframe stacks up well against the Belmont field from a Brisnet Speed rating standpoint, but he secured a very easy lead in his Churchill victory and will face much tougher competition at Saratoga. The jump up in class is an obstacle to overcome.

Membership includes a season box and entitles one primary member and one secondary member access to the Turf Club during live meets, except for Kentucky Derby and Oaks days. The primary member is provided with a Turf Club parking pass and the opportunity to purchase a six-seat reserved box for Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks days, subject to availability. Temporary parking passes will be provided during Derby Week, excluding Derby & Oaks. Regular parking hangtag is valid for the remaining days of the racing meets after the Kentucky Derby.

Turf Club II Membership ($2,990)

Membership entitles one primary member and one secondary member access to the Turf Club during live meets, except for Kentucky Derby and Oaks days. The primary member is provided with a parking pass and the opportunity to purchase a six-seat reserved box located on either the third floor of the grandstand or the first floor of the clubhouse for Kentucky Derby and Oaks days, subject to availability. Temporary parking passes will be provided during Derby Week, excluding Derby & Oaks. Regular parking hangtag is valid for the remaining days of the racing meets after the Kentucky Derby. Memberships must be renewed annually and are non-transferable. Once a secondary member is selected changes will only be permitted upon renewal each year.

Bourbon Bar Access. An exclusive selection of bourbons is offered in the Turf Club.

Do's: Jackets and blazers, vests, shirts with collars, sweaters, dresses, pantsuits, slacks and capri pants are appropriate.

Don'ts: Jeans/denim, shorts, t-shirts, crop or midriff tops, athletic wear, swim wear, and flip-flops are all considered inappropriate attire & are not permitted in these areas.

*Dress Code for Roses Lounge is Smart Casual, except for Derby Week, Mother's Day, Preakness, Belmont, Thanksgiving and the Clark Handicap when this room is considered to be Turf Club Roses Lounge. On these days the dress code is Business Casual.
