Japan Golf Tour

Professional golf tour / from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, dear wikiwand ai, let's keep it short by simply answering these key questions:.

Can you list the top facts and stats about Japan Golf Tour?

Summarize this article for a 10 year old

The Japan Golf Tour ( Japanese : 日本ゴルフツアー機構 ) is a prominent professional golf tour . It was founded in 1973 and as of 2006 it offered the third-highest annual prize fund out of the regular (that is not for seniors) men's professional tours after the PGA Tour and the European Tour . However, since the early 1990s, the growth in prize money has not kept pace with that on the two larger tours. Official events on the Japan Golf Tour count for Official World Golf Ranking points and success on the tour can also qualify members to play in the majors .

Most of the leading players on the tour are Japanese, but players from many other countries also participate. The tour is currently run by the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO), which was established in 1999 to separate the tour from the PGA of Japan. [1] The JGTO also organises a developmental tour called the Japan Challenge Tour .

Masashi Ozaki has been the dominant player on tour, leading the career wins list with 94, the career money list with over ¥ 2 billion and winning the money title twelve times between 1973 and 1998. [2]

Entry to The Open Championship is given to Order of Merit winner and runner-up, Japan Open Golf Championship winner, two players not already exempt from the money list up to the Japan Golf Tour Championship and the top four non-exempt players from the Mizuno Open .

In 2000, the tour signed a title sponsorship agreement with Iiyama , being renamed as the iiyama Tour . The agreement was reported to be worth ¥ 1,500,000,000 over three years. [3]

In 2008, the tour ventured outside of Japan for the first time, co-sanctioning the Pine Valley Beijing Open in China, alongside the Asian Tour . [4] In 2013, the tour also co-sanctioned two events at the beginning of the year in Thailand and Indonesia with the OneAsia Tour . [5] [6]

In December 2022, a new agreement involving the JGTO, PGA Tour and European Tour was announced. As part of the deal, from 2023 onwards the top three on the Japan Golf Tour's season-ending money list earned status to play on the European Tour for the following season. [7]

Xander Schauffele

Xander Schauffele won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. He has a deep connection to Japan where his mother, who hails from Chinese Taipei, grew up in Shibuya where his maternal grandparents still live in the area. A seven-time PGA TOUR winner, he qualified for the 2023 U.S. Ryder Cup team and finished runner-up in the 2023 TOUR Championship.

Message from the Player

Japan is a special place to me both professionally and personally and every year I have the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP week circled on my calendar. I'd love nothing more than to get a win for all the family I have over there and in front of the amazing Japanese fans. Securing a win in what I consider as my second home will be the perfect way to cap off the year.

Akshay Bhatia

Akshay Bhatia

Akshay Bhatia is amongst the new generation of young golf stars emerging on the PGA TOUR. The left-hander turned professional at age 17, bypassing the opportunity to play college golf, and has already won once on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022 and subsequently breaking through in a big way on the PGA TOUR with his victory at the Barracuda Championship in July. He enjoyed a stellar amateur career and became the youngest player to represent the U.S. in the 2019 Walker Cup when he was still 17 years old.

Japan is one of those leading golf countries that everybody talks about visiting and I'm very excited to receive an invitation to play in the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP. I've heard so much about the amazing and knowledgable fans and the list of ZOZO champions is absolutely incredible. Getting there this October will definitely be a highlight to what has already been a life-changing year for me on the PGA TOUR.

Min Woo Lee

Min Woo Lee

As a rising star in the game, Min Woo Lee, 25, is already a two-time DP World Tour winner from Australia and has produced strong performances on the PGA TOUR, including a T6 at THE PLAYERS Championship, T9 at the Travelers Championship and T5 at the U.S. Open in 2023 which helped him secure Special Temporary Membership. Min Woo has a big following on social media and goes by the mantra “Let’s Cook”.

Having officially attained my PGA TOUR status and gaining a start at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP is a dream come true for me. I'm looking forward to my ZOZO debut, playing on what looks like a challenging golf course and also eating a variety of Japanese foods and cuisines over there.

Masters 2021: Hideki Matsuyama and Japan's best male golfers of all-time

1232214203

Eighteen holes separate Hideki Matsuyama from Masters greatness. His would be the rare win that transcends self, as his home nation of Japan desperately craves its first male major championship winner. Certainly Matsuyama is a fitting candidate: 14 worldwide wins, seven career major top-10s, four Presidents Cup appearances and reaching as high as No. 2 in the World Ranking.

However, while Matsuyama can rid his country’s major monkey at Augusta National Sunday, he is far from the Land of the Rising Sun’s only star. Here are the best golfers of Japanese heritage.

Masashi “Jumbo” Ozaki Known as Jumbo for his length off the tee, Ozaki led the Japan Golf Tour in winnings 12 times and is the circuit’s all-time victory leader with 94 (more than 40 more than his nearest competitor). He was ranked inside the Official World Golf Ranking top 10 for more than 200 weeks in his career, reaching as high as No. 5. Never won in America but did have three major top-10s, his best finish a T-6 at the 1989 U.S. Open. Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011.

87933250

Augusta National

Isao Aoki Best known for the 1980 U.S. Open at Baltusrol, where he was tied with Jack Nicklaus for the lead after 54 holes, ultimately finishing second to the Golden Bear by two strokes. Became the first Japanese player to win on the PGA Tour by capturing the 1983 Hawaiian Open (now known as the Sony Open). Had five top-10s in majors in his career and 17 senior major top-10s. Is second to Jumbo Ozaki on the all-time JGT victories list with 51 titles.

Tommy Nakajima Won 48 tournaments on the JGT and was the leading money winner four times. Nakajima logged six career top-10s in majors, highlighted by third-place finish at the 1988 PGA. Unfortunately he’s often remembered for two blow-up holes: Making a 13 at Augusta National’s 13th hole during the 1978 Masters and putting into—and taking four shots to escape from—the Road Hole bunker while in contention at the 1978 Open Championship.

Shingo Katayama.jpg

Shingo Katayama Shared the lead at the 2001 PGA Championship after 36 holes, ultimately finishing T-4. Also came in fourth at the 2009 Masters thanks to a final-round 68, the best Augusta finish by a Japanese player. Led the JGT in earnings five times and racked up 31 wins. Because of his distinctive hats he was known as “Cowboy Shingo.”

Joe Ozaki Younger brother of Jumbo, Joe was very much his own man with 32 JGT wins and another six global victories. Made more than 185 starts on the PGA Tour, his best finish a T-2 at the 1997 Buick Open and had three top-10s at the Players Championship. Member of the 1998 International Presidents Cup team, the only team to beat the Americans in the history of the event (Joe went 2-1 on the week).

1183501402

Chung Sung-Jun

Ryo Ishikawa Won on the JGT as a 15-year-old and was T-2 after 36 holes at the 2010 U.S. Open as a 19-year-old. Along with Rory McIlroy was once dubbed the “Arnie and Jack” of the post-Tiger generation. Although he never lived up to that hype, he has won 18 worldwide titles.

Shigeki Maruyama Has three career top-10s at majors, his best finish a T-4 at the 2004 U.S. Open. Played on the 1998 and 2000 International Presidents Cup squads, and had a 5-0 record during the Internationals’ upset win in 1998. Maruyama won three times on the PGA Tour and has 12 other worldwide wins, but is best known for shooting a 58 during U.S. Open qualifying in 2000.

Masahiro Kuramoto Finished T-4 at the 1982 Open Championship. Is sixth on the JGT’s all-time wins list with 30, and also won Japan’s Amateur Championship three times. Was the medalist at the PGA Tour’s 1992 Q School.

The Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) unveiled its expanded schedule with at least 26 tournaments slated for its 50th season in 2023- two more than this year.

JGTO members will slug it out for a combined prize fund in excess of ¥3.3 billion across tournaments outside the four Major Championships, including three co-sanctioned events with the Korea Players Golf Association Tour (KPGA) and DP World Tour.

The Tour will tee off with the Token Homemate Cup at the Token Tado Country Club in Nagoya from March 30-April 2 and runs for nine consecutive months until the season-ending Golf Nippon Series JTC Cup from November 30-December 3.

The two new tournaments added to the Tour schedule are Hana Bank Invitational, to be held at Chiba Isumi Golf Club in Chiba from June 15-18 and Yokohama Minato Championship - Fujiki Centennial at Yokohama Country Club in Kanagawa from August 3-6.

With Hana Bank Invitational making its debut this season, the JGTO will now co-sanction two events with KPGA as the two Tours are currently joining forces to stage the Shinhan Donghae Open.

The professional golf scene in Japan continues to receive tremendous support from the corporate sector with Fujiki Enterprise Co., Ltd. and San Co., Ltd being the latest two companies to join the JGTO family, providing its members with more playing opportunities with the inauguration of the ¥100,000,000 Yokohama Minato Championship - Fujiki Centennial.

Another event that is set to generate a lot of interest in the forthcoming season will be none other than the ISPS Handa Championship at the PGM Ishioka Golf Club in Ibaraki.

The ¥270,440,000 (US$2,000,000) will become the first regular tournament in history to be jointly sanctioned by the JGTO and DP World Tour.

The tournament was supposed to make its much-anticipated debut this year, but it could not take place schedule due to ongoing travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.

Instead, the tournament still went on as a solely sanctioned event on both Tours, carrying the name of ISPS Handa Championship in Japan and ISPS Handa Championship in Spain.

For the 2023 season, there were changes made to several tournaments pertaining to name, dates and prize purse.

The Asia Pacific Open Golf Championship Diamond Cup will now be known as the ACN Championship Golf Tournament.

Traditionally held in May, the next edition will be played from October 5-8 with the venue will be announced in due course The Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Sammy Cup, The Crowns and Golf Partner Pro-Am Tournament are the three tournaments returning next year with an increase in the prize pot.

The total prize money for Shigeo Nagashima Invitational Sega Sammy Cup has been boosted by ¥30,000,000 to ¥150,000,000, while The Crowns and Golf Partner Pro-Am Tournament will offer ¥10,000,000 more than their existing prize fund of ¥100,000,000 and ¥50,000,000 respectively.

The number of events on the 2023 schedule could go up to 28 as discussions are still ongoing in regard to the staging of the Heiwa PGM Championship and For the Players by the Players.

Of the two, the Heiwa PGM Championship looks more likely to return in 2023. Efforts are being made for the event to be held from October 26-29.

Named after Tiger Woods, Japan’s rising star Taiga Semikawa is once again showing his stripes following an opening 7-under 64 in THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson on Thursday to trail leader Matt Wallace of England by one stroke.

Korea’s K.H. Lee, who won the tournament back-to-back in 2021-22, and Byeong Hun An, the highest ranked Korean on the FedExCup points list, opened with matching 66s at TPC Craig Ranch while defending champion Jason Day also shot a 66 in the weather-delayed first day in which nine players failed to complete their rounds.

The 23-year-old Semikawa, a former world amateur No. 1 and a four-time winner in Japan, carded eight birdies against a lone bogey as he made the most of a sponsor exemption to feature on the leaderboard.

“My putting felt pretty good coming off from last week and even though there was an hour delay," said Semikawa, who finished tied 24th in the DP World Tour’s ISPS Handa Championship in Japan last weekend. "I didn’t feel any nerves and was able to just play my own golf. My driver was great today. The feeling I had off the tee is what I usually feel when I’m striking it well. I’m excited to see how things go tomorrow.

“There weren’t many dry spots on the course, but fortunately I was able to find the fairway quite often and because we were playing preferred lies, I was able to set myself up, so was lucky in that regards.”

Like many other top Japanese golfers including nine-time PGA TOUR winner Hideki Matsuyama, Semikawa attended Tohoku Fukushi University during his amateur days and made history in 2022 by becoming the first amateur to win the Japan Open since the tournament’s inception in 1927. He has featured in four PGA TOUR events this year, making the cuts in three and was in contention at the Sony Open in Hawaii after 54 holes before settling for a T30 finish.

With TPC Craig Ranch yielding low scores – a total of 116 players were in the red when play was suspended due to darkness – Semikawa knows he needs to keep attacking the pins to stick close to the leaders, and live up to his first name.

“I’d like to continue making a lot of birdies like today," Semikawa added. "But I’m not going to worry about what position I’m in and just try and keep up the same play as I did today.”

Earlier in the year when Semikawa played his way into contention in Hawaii early, he told the media how he was given his first name. "I was named after Tiger Woods and I kind of took on the way he plays," said Semikawa. "I grew up watching his aggressive style, and I think that kind of fits my personality and is something I try and replicate in my own game."

Located in Hanno City, the Kuni Country Club has one golf course which opened in 1964. The course consists of 27-holes comprising three nine-hole routes named the East, West and North Courses. The golf course was designed by Seiby Railway Company on land that had formerly been used to hunt. The location and topography of Kuni Country Club lends itself to outstanding beauty. You will find a naturally hilly golf course pockmarked by ponds and laced with pine forests. Strategy is the key to your golf game here.

Designed by J. Michael Poellot and opening in 1990, the Caledonian Golf Club entertains stunning views throughout. Officially a parkland course, it plays like a modern inland links. Bunkers, greens and lakes provide various challenges as does the heavily treed areas between holes. Your approach shot will count for everything thanks to various doglegs, lakes and green formations. The golf course impressed Tom Doak “The cape par-4 13th around the lake at the back of the clubhouse, the par-5 15th with its approach vaguely reminiscent of the 13th at Augusta, and the par-5 closer with an alternate fairway route like the 15th at Seminole.”

Constituted of 18-holes with a par of 73, Dai Hakone Country Club was designed by Otani Komyo and Asaka Yasuhiko in 1954. It has hosted the LPGA’s CAT & Mitsubishi tournaments. This championship course is spread on the Sengokuhara plain against the background of the broad mountains of the out rim of Hakone Crater. The truly unique landscape provides a very memorable round of golf. Framed by mountains on all signs, the golf course is lined with forests and laced with trees, but the magnificent green complexes and undulating land makes for a fantastic round of 18-holes.

Hakone Kurakake Golf at Kanagawa

Perched on top of Hakone mountain with clear vistas to Mt. Fuji, Lake Ashi and the glistening Pacific ocean in the distance this course makes for a memorable round. The course is mostly flat and wide with welcoming fairways and not overly long making it well received by female golfers. Access is also easy here, making it a popular course for group competitions. Should the weather be cooperating you will be treated to a very memorable round with Mt. Fuji views most holes!

Perhaps the most famous course on our itinerary is Golden Valley Golf Club at Hyogo prefecture. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the golf course opened in 1987 and has since hosted the Japan Professional Golf Championship (PGA Event). Utilising creeks and the natural landscape, Jones made maximum use of water which features on 16 holes in various forms. The beauty of the complex is astounding so don’t forget your camera.

Fukuoka Century Golf Club

Featuring two 9-hole golf courses, Fukuoka Century Golf Club comprises the Chikushino and Asakura golf courses. Whilst each hole has nine holes in play, they both have a “0” hole which forms Japan’s only 20-hole golf course when played all together. Surrounded by nature, this parkland route has a lot of water and trees to be wary of. Hitting it straight is the aim of the game at Fukuoka Century Golf Club.

Designed by Akira Hattori, The Queen’s Hill Golf Course opened in November of 1992. The 18-hole course has a par of 72 and measures over 7,000 yards from the tips. Water is a big theme in Japan’s golf courses and with The Queen’s Hill, it is no exception so bring some extra golf balls. The golf course is laid out over an expansive area with many open fairways. The trick with this challenging course is to keep your golf ball dry and get it as close to the pin as possible. The greens at this club are enormous.

Can I bring my non-golfer partner?

Of course you can. Our tours are specifically designed so non-golfing partners enjoy the trip as much as their golfing partners. Our hotels are always central to towns and popular activities. We also create non-golfer itineraries that are crafted with the interests of the non-golfers in mind and that means we consult with you before we book any non-golfer activity.

Do I need a certain handicap to join this tour?

No, our golf tours are accepting of all golfers. Depending on the destination, some golf courses require you to have a certain handicap, and this will be expressed prior to any booking confirmation. Otherwise, you are welcome to join our golf tour as they are always inclusive.

What happens on tour?

Escorted golf tours are one of the most enjoyable types of holidays. Our groups are small and everyone gets to know each other on a first-name basis early-on in the tour.

On a golf day, breakfast is usually taken between 6:30 - 08.30, and our first tee-times are usually mid-morning. This allows for the early risers and late-goers to enjoy a two-hour period for breakfast. We like to keep the afternoons free for sightseeing, resort relaxation, shopping or general downtime. We usually restrict each day to having one activity, whether it's a half-day tour or round of golf, it's usually quite relaxed.

Apart from the welcome dinner and farewell dinner, we usually keep evenings free to enjoy whichever destination you are in. If you are travelling by yourself, the tour leaders have an open invitation to dine with them; if this is the case, you're in for a real treat as the tour leaders know where to go for the best meals. We always stay in destinations where local restaurants are either a short walk or short transfer away, so there are plenty of options to dine.

What is the make-up of your tour guests?

Over the decades, our tours average the following guest ratio: 70% couples, 30% singles. Our tours are comprised on average of 55% male and 45% female. One fact we are proud of is that our tours enjoy an average of 70% or higher repeat guest rate .

Are you an accredited travel company?

Absolutely. We are firm believers in travelling safely and with transparency. See our full list of accreditation here .

High-level golf runs in the family for 16-year-old Kris Kim, who will make his PGA Tour debut this week at the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. Kim’s mother, Ji-Hyun Suh, played on the LPGA in 1998 and 1999, at the same time superstar Se Ri Pak burst onto the global stage.

Kim, who hails from Surrey, England, brings quite the resume to Texas. His 2023 triumphs include the R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship, European Boys Individual Championship and the McGregor Trophy.

He also went undefeated at the Junior Ryder Cup, defeating another up-and-coming star, Miles Russell, 5 and 4, in singles. The 15-year-old Russell, of course, tied for 20th recently on the Korn Ferry Tour .

“I can’t wait to play in front of big crowds again. I’ve never hit the ball as far as I did at the Ryder Cup,” Kim said in a release. “The adrenaline rush makes golf so much fun. That said, having played that course, and a few more Tour courses, I appreciate the task ahead and look forward to the challenge.”

Kim, who is playing in McKinney on a sponsor exemption, became the first amateur sponsored by CJ Group last May. Managed by Trinifold Sports, Kim also became the first European amateur to sign an NIL deal with Under Armour and the first British amateur to sign with TaylorMade.

Suh, who briefly returned to competition in Europe in 2014 after a 12-year break, told tour officials that she took up golf at age 13 in Seoul after her father forced her to quit tennis.

“My father would take me at five in the morning and I would hit balls all day and my hands would hurt,” she said. “I didn’t like it very much, but my father did. So I continued practicing from the age of 13 and I became very good. Then, I joined the Korean National team, turned professional in 1998 and afterwards I decided to try and play in America.”

Suh recorded two T-15 finishes in 1998 on the LPGA at the Friendly’s Classic and Giant Eagle LPGA Classic.

Her stint in America fell short, she said, because her English wasn’t very good and it was difficult to travel on her own. With no sponsors in the U.S., she ultimately left for the Japan LPGA, where she played for one year until she met her husband and stopped altogether.

That was in 2002. The couple moved to Surrey and Suh took up a teaching career at a local golf course.

While Suh’s path into the game was laid out by her father, Cuddington Golf Club director Paul Schunter told BBC Sport that Kim’s passionate pursuit is self-motivated.

“I’ve never known a more dedicated youngster,” said Schunter, who watched Kim’s game develop as a youngster at Cuddington.

“And he could not have asked for better parents. They have been so encouraging. All the pushing has come from Kris because he has always wanted to play and practice more and more.”

Kim doesn’t have to look far to learn more about how to handle the next step of his career.

“I’ll definitely ask my mum for advice,” he said. “It is going to be a very different environment and you don’t know how you will respond to it. She’ll help me deal with it. She’s my coach and we talk about everything from dealing with nerves, taking one shot at a time, leaving bad shots behind and keeping it simple right through to course strategy.

“My first aim is to make the cut and then see what happens. At the end of the day I’m one of 144 competitors and we’ve all got a chance. Whatever happens, it’s going to be super helpful for my future because I’ll gain so much experience. I know I’m still young and pretty much every week I learn a lesson, but this week is going to be a lot bigger.”

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event Sunday, beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

Trainer pushed a 6-foot par putt to the right of the cup to end it, with Lowry and McIlroy sharing a smiling embrace on the green.

The 34-year-old McIlroy, playing in the event for the first time, won his 25th PGA Tour title and first of the season. Lowry claimed his third PGA Tour victory. The Irish tandem closed with a 4-under 68 in the alternate-shot final round to match Ramey and Trainer at 25-under 263.

Ramey and Trainer began the day tied for 27th and shot to the top of the leaderboard with nine birdies between the seventh and 18th holes. They tied the alternate-shot tournament record of 63, but then had to wait nearly three hours to see if their lead would stand up.

They struggled to execute on the playoff hole. Trainer pulled his drive into the left rough, Ramey also yanked his approach left off the cart path and into the wall below the suites around the 18th green. Trainer then chipped short before Ramey finally got onto the green.

Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard missed the playoff by one shot when Brehm’s birdie putt from the fringe narrowly missed to the right. Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair, the 54-hole leaders, were tied for the lead until failing to birdie the par-5 16th and taking double bogey on the par-3 17th.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hannah Green closed with a 5-under 66 and won the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for the second straight year, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at Wilshire Country Club.

A year after making a 25-foot birdie on the final hole of regulation and winning on the second hole of a playoff, Green took the drama out of this one for her fifth LPGA Tour victory and second of the year.

Green began the key run with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 12th and made a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 13th. Then, after Stark bogeyed the par-4 16th two groups ahead, Green ran in a 25-footer for eagle from the fringe on 15 to open a four-stroke lead, and she made it 5 under in five holes with a birdie on 16.

Stark birdied her last two holes for a 68. The 24-year-old Swede also finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year.

Grace Kim, four strokes ahead entering the weekend, closed 76-77 without making a birdie the last two days. She tied for 25th.

LIV GOLF LEAGUE

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Brendan Steele closed with a 4-under 68 to hold off Louis Oosthuizen and win LIV Golf Adelaide by one shot at The Grange Golf Club.

The 41-year-old Steele finished with a 54-hole total of 18-under 198 for his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

Steele had a streak of five consecutive birdies early in the round, before some putting jitters appeared in his back nine to open the door for a fast finishing pack of challenges including Oosthuizen (65) and former previous Masters champions Charl Schwartzel (64) and Jon Rahm (64).

Schwartzel and Rahm were among a group of five players at 16-under 200, with Joaquin Niemann (66), Andy Ogletree (65) and Dean Burmester (67) in a tie for third.

Defending champion Talor Gooch shot 70 and finished in a tie for 26th at 10-under.

Australia-based Ripper won the team title on the second playoff hole against South African-based Stingers.

EUROPEAN TOUR AND JAPAN GOLF TOUR

GOTEMBA, Japan (AP) — Yuto Katsuragawa began the back nine with five birdies in seven holes that carried him to a 7-under 63 and a three-shot victory in the ISPS Handa Championship, the third Japanese player this year to claim a European tour title.

The tournament was co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour. Katsuragawa follows Rikuya Hoshino at the Commercial Qatar Masters and Keita Nakajima in the Hero Indian Open for Japanese winners. A year ago, Ryo Hisatsune won the French Open.

Katsuragawa started the final round three shots out of the lead, but got into the mix when 54-hole leader Casey Jarvis and Yannik Paul faltered on the front nine. The 25-year-old pulled away and won by three over Sebastian Soderberg, who had a 67.

Jarvis closed with a 74 to tie for 18th. Paul, who started one shot behind, shot 76. It was a missed opportunity for Paul, in the mix for the second and final spot for Germany in the Olympics.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

DULUTH, Ga. (AP) — Stephen Ames celebrated his 60th birthday with a successful title defense in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, closing with a 5-under 67 for his eighth PGA Tour Champions victory.

A stroke behind Paul Broadhurst after matching the tournament record Saturday with a 64, Ames had two eagles in the final round. He won by four strokes, finishing at 14-under 202 at TPC Sugarloaf for his record third victory in the event.

Broadhurst, the 58-year-old Englishman coming off a victory last week in the Invited Celebrity Classic, closed with a 72 to tie for second with Doug Barron (69). K.J. Choi (70) and Steven Alker (71) were 9 under.

Ames became the first multiple winner this year on the tour, also taking the Chubb Classic in February. He has six victories in his last 29 starts after winning twice in his first 175 — the first at TPC Sugarloaf in 2017 — on the 50-and-over tour.

KORN FERRY TOUR

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tim Widing of Sweden won for the second straight week on the Korn Ferry Tour, closing with an 8-under 63 to cap off a week of low scoring with a four-shot victory in the Veritex Bank Championship.

The week began with Frankie Capan III posting a 58 for the third sub-60 round on the Korn Ferry Tour this year. It ended with Widing’s worst score of the week a 65 on Saturday.

He finished at 31-under 253 to boost his position atop the Korn Ferry Tour points list as he closes in on a PGA Tour card.

Myles Creighton of Canada closed with a 62 to finish second, followed by Trent Phillips (65). Capan wound up seven shots behind in fourth place. None of the Korn Ferry Tour players who broke 60 this year have gone on to win.
