Ultimate Day Trip from LA to San Diego

The Coronado Bridge in San Diego, CA at dusk

If you’re looking for a respite from all that snarling traffic and general chaos from the valley to the hills, Los Angelinos would do well to pack their bags, cobble a new playlist together, hit the Santa Ana Freeway south and retreat to the coastal beauty of San Diego. At about 121 miles, this 2+ hour road trip takes about as much time as some rush hour commutes, but the payoff is so much more rewarding.

Shopping

Whoever coined the old adage that says, “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey” must’ve spent some time on the open road headed for California’s southernmost city. There’s a lot more to do than play ‘I Spy’ or count out the state plates to make the time pass on this journey and we’re going to break it all down for you. To preface, these recommendations do not take into account whether you’re taking your sweet time. They are predicated on using I-5 as your main route, so take it for what it’s worth. Without any further adieus, lets get this show on the road!

First, here are the must-see towns on the way and why

Before we start pulling over and stretching our legs, let’s at least wait until we hit Anaheim. If you’ve got the inclination or a car full of aspiring mouseketeers, spending the day in Disneyland might be in the cards. This is one of the most visited places in the world but if money or time are of concern, pop in a movie for the kids and just keep on truckin’.

Santa Ana/Orange County

Further south in Orange County, located in Santa Ana, is the far more accessible Bowers Museum of Cultural Art. As the county’s largest museum, it celebrates the finest art and culture from Asia, the Pacific Islands, Ancient Egypt and more including housing exhibits on loan from world-class museums and a great, interactive section specifically designed for kids.

Further down in Tustin you might want to check out the Marconi Automotive Museum where you can walk amongst an impressive 30 million dollar collection of some of the world’s rarest and sought after mechanical machines like the sapphire blue FX Ferrari, designed by Frank Williams of Formula 1 fame. You might’ve worked a healthy appetite by this point and you’ve got some legit options in the area that go beyond the kind of fare you normally get from a drive-thru window.

View this post on Instagram Our patio at our Anaheim location got a little love this week. Patio is reserved tonight for a private event, but come on down this weekend to check it out. We are giving away our old picnic tables for FREE. If anyone wants one, just come on by the tasting room. #drinkbsb #backstreetbrewery A post shared by Backstreet Brewery (@backstreetbrewery) on Apr 18, 2019 at 1:14pm PDT

In Irvine, you can satiate your yearnings for Korean food with a visit to Seoul Haus. Burntzilla takes the hot dog game to new, delicious heights and the BackStreet Brewery makes a monster burger you can wash down with a variety of tasty craft beers.

San Clemente

With a full stomach, you’re ready to hit the road again for another 30 miles until you reach San Clemente and The Surfing Heritage Foundation to discover, understand and appreciate surfing as a sport, lifestyle and culture that is quintessential California.

San Onofre State Beach , Carlsbad State Beach, The San Diego Botanic Garden and The Birch Aquarium At Scripps are all solid contenders as some of the best roadside attractions worthy of your travel time and dollar as you make your way to ‘America’s Finest City.’

Ok, you’ve arrived in San Diego, now what?

Sightseeing Tour Options

Now that you’ve rolled into town and are ready to seize the day, there is but one thing to do above all others. Whether you’re tight on time or taking things at your own pace, the very best way to immerse yourself in the history, culture and people of San Diego is by booking yourself an Old Town Trolley Tour.

Here’s why:

For a comprehensive, fully-narrated experience that allows you to hop-on and hop-off at any time during the tour, it’s a personalized way to enjoy and discover this wonderful town! You’ll learn about the rich history of Old Town San Diego with a walk back in time at their museum. You’ll also get to browse over 40 different shops where you’ll see skilled artisans plying their trade along with some delicious dining options.

View this post on Instagram Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool😎 A post shared by San Diego Seals Tour (@sandiegoseals) on Sep 14, 2018 at 12:53pm PDT

Another alternative worth investigating is a San Diego SEAL tour . This is the only land and sea tour of the city that provides visitors with a one-of-a-kind perspective on a trip that’s part tour and part amusement park ride. This tour covers just a few of the places found on the Old Town Trolley along with a few new ones and culminates with a dramatic splashdown into San Diego Harbor for the tour’s second leg. The SEAL is a specially designed amphibious vehicle that was inspired by the WWII era hybrid transport trucks responsible for bringing troops and munitions to and from shore, known affectionately as DUCKS.

Excellent experience and tour! Michael was our guide and he had a vast knowledge of Orange County and the history. We visited many places around Orange Country and got to experience "can't miss" sights. This is a great option for anyone who wants to see Orange Country and explore. I felt as if I learned and saw so much.

We took the Temecula Wine tour, starting off with lunch a Robert Rinzoni winey, before getting to the winery we drove through old town Temecula and stopped to see some long horn bulls and water buffalo. The Best Coast Tours team made us feel comfortable and showed us a great time. I have been going to Temecula for years, and this was a fun, new side of the area I hadn't seen.

Tour was 9-6; Saw everything you could wish to see - Beverly Hills, Hollywood sign, Farmers Market, Rodeo Drive etc. The driver was knowledgable. It was a great value. We never would have been able to see so much, navigate the highways and directions. It was an excellent experience.

Joe was very knowledgeable and even personalized the tour a little. We had a smashing day visiting Laguna Beach, Crystal Cove, Marina Del Rey and others all of which enhanced our holiday no end. On the way back, Joe was flexible enough to take us to a lovely spot to spend the evening at Newport Beach rather than a return to our hotel.

We toured both LA and Orange County beaches with Best Coast Tours last week. Joe and Michael are outstanding hosts providing historical information regarding the sites along with just the right mix of pop culture. Not only are the extremely knowledgeable about the area, they are fun! We are so glad to have picked Best Coast Tours to introduce us to California.

Leave Feedback

it was just so much to see in a single day about the San Diego city. I think it was the one of the best ways to visit core charms of that city since the humongous airplane carrier, Harbor cruise, and historic city tours helped us leaned so much. Thanks for this wonderful and reasonable bus trip. WE enjoyed a lot!

I admit that our bus journey was quite fascinating, however in my opinion it could have more fascinating as well as enjoyable if we could have toured a bunch of more places. The pick-up and drop-off service was facilitating as it picked and dropped us at our hometown Los Angeles. It was good day.

I had an amazing day during that tour, it was my first time to see all these places, i really loved the Aircraft Carrier in the Midway Island, and the San Diego Harbor Cruise was great!. i just hope i can join that tour again with some friends .

i really loved every second during that tour, i was really surprised to see the tour guide speaking great Chinese! also the places we went to were really beautiful and the tour was really organized. it was such an amazing experience

David J. Henderson

Well i am going to be honest, i was really upset because most the people on that tour were Chinese, and we were the only Americans, so the tour guide was speaking Chinese most of the time! if it was not for the fact that i saw these places before, it would have been really bad! other than that the tour was great of course

Taylor Swift's '22' hat from ‘Eras Tour' in Paris goes home with San Diego Swiftie

”i thought she was leading me to the exit until she stopped in front of the stage, and the guy asked, 'can i pick you up' and i was like, 'yeah' and then i finally realized what was happening", by brooke martell - meteorologist • published may 16, 2024 • updated on may 17, 2024 at 2:46 pm.

A trip to Paris can be the experience of a lifetime: Seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time or Notre Dame or a cruise on the Seine only scratch the surface of the beauty of the City of Lights.

Last week, thousands of people went to the City of Lights for another reason : To see Taylor Swift kick off the European leg of the "Eras Tour" at París La Défense Arena.

24/7 Los Angeles news stream: Watch NBC4 free wherever you are

Those in attendance included 9-year-old Julissa Vargas and her mom, Telemundo 20 executive producer Kathia Lopez-Santos. The trip of Julissa's dreams turned into one she'll never forget.

Vargas received the surprise of her life when she attended Night 1 of the "Eras Tour" in Paris.

NBC 7's Brooke Martell, a Swiftie herself, asked Vargas what it was like being hugged by Taylor Swift. Because, yes, that happened.

"I don’t know. It was awesome," The 9-year-old said. "It was, I don’t know, it was one of the best moments of my life. And she gave me a high-five with her two hands.”

But a hug from the world-famous pop icon was not on the original itinerary. The original plan: a trip to Paris with her parents and a chance to see the singer. It's already something so many people, let alone a 9-year-old girl, could never imagine in their wildest dreams.

"I’ve always wanted to be in Paris,” Vargas said. "That’s my favorite!"

So, last week, after a long flight and a night of sleep, it was already time to get ready to see Swift. Wearing a black beaded dress, the Californian native couldn't wait.

"I was dressed Reputation-theme because that’s my favorite album — all of it," Vargas said.

As the mother and daughter made their way through the crowds of Swifties, they found their spots on the floor of the arena, waiting in anticipation for the night to begin.

"Everyone was there to dance, and the worst part: It was the tallest people," Vargas said.

They didn't have the best view, but that didn't matter.

"I was fine with it," she said. "I honestly just wanted to hear the music coming from her mouth, like hearing actual words in the actual moment."

Someone had their eye on Vargas though, which meant her experience was about to become unforgettable.

”I thought she was leading me to the exit until she stopped in front of the stage, and the guy asked, 'Can I pick you up? and I was like, 'Yeah!' " Vargas said. "And then I finally realized what was happening.”

It's a moment all Swifties dream of but only one gets to experience per night, as Swift performs her song "22."

For those who've attended the show or seen the concert clips online, this is a point in the show from the "Red" era. The singer skips down the runway of the stage, and there's always someone at the end of it waiting for her. This time, it was Julissa Vargas.

”I could only hear the part where she says, 'Can I give you a hug?' and she also said, 'Thank you for coming,' " Vargas said.

A hug and she received something to keep: the coveted "22" hat.

"This is the hat she gave me, and it’s signed inside," Vargas said, gesturing.

la tours from san diego

It's a night the 9-year-old will never forget.

"I still can't believe it actually happened to me," Vargas said. "I see the YouTube Shorts and I'm still like, 'Me?' "

She said she'll never forget that moment and sees herself as a lifelong fan of Taylor Swift.

”I’m the luckiest girl in the world," Vargas said.

Don't worry: After Vargas met Swift, she was taken to the VIP section where she and her mother had the best view to watch the rest of the show.

Danny Ocean Announces 2024 “Reflexa” Tour

One Of Latin Music’s Most Thought-Provoking And Fast-Rising Young Artists Will Bring His Innovative ‘Pop of the Future’ Sound To The Live Stage During His Most Extensive North American Tour

Tickets available via presales starting tuesday, may 14; general onsale begins on, friday, may 17 at 10am local time at livenation.com.

Danny Ocean , acclaimed for his role as a musical innovator and provocateur within Latin music, is set to embark on his highly anticipated North American “Reflexa Tour” – presented by Toyota and produced by Live Nation. The tour kicks off on September 13 at the Moore Theater in Seattle, with stops planned in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, Houston, and many more major cities.

With a career already boasting multi-platinum hits that have collected nearly TEN BILLION streams and a highly praised just released new album, Danny Ocean is poised to make his biggest mark yet on the North American live music scene with a trek that reflects both his artistic evolution and the growing fan demand for his ‘high-energy performances.’ With his fanbase expanding rapidly, this tour marks a significant milestone as Danny takes the stage in larger venues and ventures into nine new markets, for his most extensive tour across the United States and Canada.

“Reflexa” (‘Reflections’) is a profound exploration of introspective themes on a journey of self-discovery, marking a pivotal moment in Ocean’s career. The album has already garnered significant acclaim from fans and critics alike as “ A Breath of Fresh Air…with a sound of his own…creating the ‘pop of the future” (Rolling Stone). As further testament to his new music’s reception, advance singles AMOR, Cero Condiciones   and the May 2 nd full album release all dominated Billboard’s “Favorite New Latin Music Release” poll -winning the weekly reader votes by wide margins.

“Wow Danny Ocean, you have really grown. The Venezuelan star delivered a high-energy performance that was unexpected in its mishmash of styles… its edginess and its self-affirming lyrics…. Danny Ocean’s music doesn’t sound like anything out there right now… Reflexa is Danny’s most personal album yet, but it’s also his most sonically experimental…  He’s real, raw, and overly honest about life, and a fierce protector of the art he puts out in the world” – Billboard

“After three years of absence, Danny Ocean returned strongly to the Pal Norte stage to conquer a new audience, filling the venue with excitement and energy. The night began with his iconic song ‘Mónaco,’ unleashing euphoria among those present and marking the start of an unforgettable evening. The set concluded with his worldwide hit ‘Me Rehúso,’ leaving the audience wanting more. Danny Ocean excitedly announced that new shows and new music are [arriving], ensuring a bright future.” – Mitoteros Show

TICKETS: Tickets will be available starting with an artist presale beginning on Tuesday, May 14 at 10am local time. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning on Friday, May 17 at 10am local time at LiveNation.com .

About Danny Ocean

Danny Ocean was born in Caracas, Venezuela, but he spent the first years of his life in the Caribbean and Namibia due to the needs of his parents’ careers. His return to Caracas sparked his interest in music, especially electronic music and hip-hop beats. After moving to Miami, he discovered his voice and wrote the hit song “Me Rehúso,” which became a global viral hit and the Latin song with the most weeks on Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart. It has now garnered over 1.6 billion streams on Spotify, and 1.8 billion views on YouTube. As a result of the song’s success, Danny signed with Atlantic Records and released  additional popular songs like “Dembow” and “Vuelve .” These tracks and more personal songs formed his first studio album, 54+1. Ocean has also collaborated with several artists and has been the composer of hits such as “Ay Dios Mío” by Karol G and “Raptame” by Reik. Before the release of his second album, Danny Ocean reflected on his identity and creative direction and released @dannocean by Danny Ocean, which features reggaeton songs such as “Apartamento” and “Fuera del Mercado,” which received multiple Platinum certifications. From there. Danny continued to build his visibility through extensive touring of Latin America, both with his own critically praised concerts and appearances in Major festivals such as Lollapalooza. Simultaneously Danny continued to have a strong voice as a social advocate, and has become a strong supporter of The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Now, Danny Ocean takes another major career step forward with the introspective & musically innovative “ Reflexa” album and global tour.

“Siempre he querido ir a París”, dijo Julissa.
