Manchester is a buzzing, youthful city that your students will love. But it also has a long and fascinating history. The city really rose to prominence during the Industrial Revolution, when it was an important centre for textile production, and cotton goods in particular, earning it the nickname ‘Cottonopolis’.

The establishment of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, followed by the Manchester Ship Canal, added to the city’s prosperity, and Manchester soon became a battleground for capitalists and Marxists.

During WW2, the city’s factories were largely commandeered to produce items needed by the British Armed Forces, and so Manchester became a target for the Luftwaffe. Much of the city’s historic centre was destroyed during the Manchester Blitz.

The Manchester Museum , part of the University of Manchester has a collection that spans early natural history to the development of technology.  With objects like dinosaur skeletons and mummies from Ancient Egypt, the collection crosses millennia.

The Science & Industry Museum explores how ideas can change the world, from the Industrial Revolution to the present day, with a particular focus on the city’s achievements in science.

At the Imperial War Museum North , you can walk through a timeline of history from the First World War to the present day.  In this museum, every object, piece of art and carefully selected exhibition is designed to live long in your memory.

Then pay a visit to the Sea Life Manchester , dive beneath the waves and come face to face with over 2000 creatures!  You’ll be able to see jellyfish and sea turtles and get amazing views from the sea bed in the Ocean Tunnel.

Arrive and settle into your accommodation.

Start the day with a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the BBC studios at MediaCityUK .  The well-informed and friendly tour guides will entertain and surprise you as you walk in the footsteps of your favourite stars.  Students will have the chance to see the most interesting areas available, as well as gaining a fascinating insight into how TV and radio work.

Whether you are looking for a Victorian themed school trip or a chance to learn about an important Manchester woman, we can offer a school visit to meet the learning needs of your school group.

Described after her death as ‘ one of the greatest female novelists of all time ’ Elizabeth Gaskell was born in 1810 and lived at 84 Plymouth Grove in Manchester with her family from 1850 until her death in 1865. Elizabeth Gaskell was a celebrated Victorian author and social activist best known for writing Cranford, North and South  and the biography of her friend Charlotte Bronte.

Elizabeth welcomed other Victorians such as Charles Dickens and Charlotte Bronte to her House. Her family mixed with a range of Victorian society from the poor of the workhouse to the likes of Florence Nightingale and Charles Darwin.

Elizabeth and her family did a great deal to help the working people of Manchester including supporting and delivering education to the Victorian working classes. They ran early forms of food-banks, supported unmarried mothers and were actively involved in the anti-slavery movement.

Building on the legacy of Elizabeth Gaskell and her family, our hands-on approach and relaxing environment mean we are an inspiring, sensory and creative space for school children of all ages.

Primary School Visits 

Ks1/ks2: victorians / then & now.

Who lived in a Victorian house like this? Through a variety of playful and hands-on activities, we will discover more about Elizabeth Gaskell’s Victorian home. Pupils will compare life in Victorian times to life today through three activities during their visit. These are usually;

1. A tour and exploration of five Victorian rooms (can include a focus on the role of Victorian women)

2. Handling and talking about Victorian household objects used by Victorian servants.

3. A craft activity making a Victorian toy (KS1) or a literacy activity (KS2) using chalks and ink

Key information

£4.50 per child (£3.75+VAT). (minimum charge of £100)

• Up to 30 children per session
• Visit lasts 2 hours.
• Available to book Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
• Coach drop off on the road next to the house
• We ask for 1 member of staff per 10 children plus extra for children with special needs.
• The house has step-free access, a lift to all levels and accessible toilets on each floor.

It's been 60 years since the residents of Stockport could only watch in horror as a tragedy played out in front of their eyes. But what they did next was extraordinary.

On the morning of May 28, 1964, a train carrying more than 230 children ploughed into a bridge in Cheadle Hulme . The trainload of schoolchildren and their teachers were travelling from Gnosall in Staffordshire for a day out at York Minster.

At around 9.40 am, the train travelling at speed reached Cheadle Hulme Station when one of the carriages began to rock from side-to-side. Eyewitness reports said the erratically moving carriage then rolled over on its side with a deafening crash.

It was dragged on by the train and then the carriages behind it fell away, smashing into the bridge over Station Road and destroying the platform. People could only look on in horror at the carnage left on the tracks in front of them.

The Stockport Advertiser reported at the time how Cheadle Hulme became a 'village of horror... and heroism' as people rushed to help injured children. Adding: "There was a loud grinding noise, then a terrifying roar.

"It reached a frightening crescendo of splintering woodwork and tearing metal... then there was a silence. Tragedy came to a stunned Station Road."

The Manchester Evening News reported that "sandwiches, sweets, and comics, lay strewn among the tangled tracks" - the belongings of the children onboard. Badly injured children and teachers were trapped inside the carriages, or thrown onto the tracks from one of the carriages that had plunged onto its side.

The tragedy took the lives of three people. Eight-year-old Christine Heffernan and 12-year-old Lewis Stevens, alongside Mr M Pedley - a railway representative from Burton-on-Trent who was travelling with the party - were all killed, with dozens more injured.

But what was astonishing is that more people were not killed in the devastating crash. One railway official said: "It is nothing short of a miracle. When you look at the damage to the carriages it is hard to believe that so many got out uninjured."

In the station there was a scene of utter devastation, with five wrecked carriages leaning at crazy angles, the bridge was partly demolished and the station platform had completely shattered. Many eye-witnesses were reported to have "wept openly" looking at the scenes after the crash. But large numbers of people ran straight into the twisted metal and rubble to help.

Mr Donald Pimlott, a butcher, of Swann Lane, Cheadle Hulme, told of coming to the rescue of a badly injured 10-year old girl. She told him: "Am I dreaming - I must be dreaming."

Mr Pimlott, added: "She was dreadfully conscious. I talked to her to comfort her."

Dozens of women were reported to have climbed up the steep embankment to the scene of devastation, and tore up clothing to attend to the injured. Others brought tea to the struggling rescue workers who had arrived quickly on scene.

Among the horror and terror there were acts of tremendous bravery and decency. One seriously injured nine-year-old child travelling on the train was John 'Tich' Gibson.

He was trapped in an overturned coach for an hour - and described by an ambulance man as "the bravest kid I've ever seen". Trapped between a rail and girder with his head resting on a sleeper, the nine-year old's courage amazed his rescuers.

He talked to firemen and doctors as they fought to free him and "never once complained". He was finally freed and taken to hospital with terrible injuries which resulted in having his arm amputated - but miraculously he survived.

Another incredible story was that of Mary Tiernan. The nine-year old lay in coma, critically injured with head wounds as well as fractured bones and burns at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Nicknamed 'Sleeping Beauty' by reporters , she woke up three months later in hospital. Her first words were 'There's my daddy." She went on to make a full recovery.

Those who were not injured were reportedly taken to the nearby Methodist Hall where they sat in quiet groups while local women and social workers made tea. Many of the children cried while others "sat huddled and quivering with nerves" in the arms of teachers.

A lot of the teachers were injured themselves with "torn clothes and bloodstained faces" but they sang songs to calm the children like 'Ten Green Bottles' and gave out pop and cakes.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News on the 50th anniversary of the crash in 2014, Frank Stringer, then aged 24, was a driver with the Cheshire County Ambulance service and was dropping patients off at Cheadle Royal Hospital when he was called to the station.

He witnessed the aftermath of the horror. He told the M.E.N : "My job when I got to the scene was to take the injured to Stockport Infirmary on Wellington Road South.

"I took two casualties and then returned to the scene where I was instructed to go to a nearby school hall and play the piano to entertain the injured children. Luckily, there was a reporter there called Brian Trueman who could play so I was relieved of my duties. I then helped to clear the track and look for more casualties."

Frank, a grandad from Heald Green, later became a police officer at Manchester Airport . He continued: "When I got the initial call, I think my adrenaline was racing. I was just there to do my job.

"I think the scene affected some of the older ambulance men. It is a day that should be remembered."

Adding: "It was a big day for Cheadle Hulme and all the community who pulled together."

And it was the emergency services that Frank was part of that were praised for their immediate action. At Stockport Infirmary, doctors stood by to perform emergency operations while rest centres were set up around the disaster scene for the children who escaped physically unhurt, while the wreckage continued to be searched for trapped survivors.

British Rail officials later also thanked all the people living near the line who had helped with first-aid and the organisation of rest centres while supplying the professional rescue teams with refreshments. Like Frank said, it was in those moments of horror that the people pulled together.

An investigation by the Ministry of Transport found the accident was down to driver error and the train being driven at excessive speed.

Barnstead Elementary School is now home to a tree that once took a trip around the moon, thanks to one teacher known for her love of space.

The so-called "moon tree" was grown from a seed that travelled aboard NASA's Artemis I space mission. On that mission, the seeds travelled more than 275,000 miles and orbited the moon.

NASA and the USDA received more than 2,000 applications to receive a moon tree.

Brittany Sylvian, a fourth grade teacher at Barnstead Elementary School, submitted an application for the school to be a host site for one of the trees, and she was chosen to be a top candidate.

"It's definitely an interesting step to know that trees and other plants can start to germinate and start the whole process in space, which is amazing for future scientific developments as people look toward the moon, mars, and beyond," Sylvian said.

The American Sycamore tree arrived earlier this week. On Friday, it was planted on the school grounds with the help of Sylvian's fourth grade class.

The class nicknamed the tree "Arty" in honor of the Artemis I mission.

It is currently the only moon tree in the state.

Good morning!

Parliament was dissolved at one minute past midnight, and there are no longer any sitting MPs - meaning the tooth-and-nail fight for all 650 parliamentary seats, and the keys to Number 10, is well and truly under way.

Political parties are spreading out across the country to get their message out ahead of polling day on 4 June.

Here's what you need to know as campaigning continues today:

• Sir Keir Starmer will be launching Labour 's campaign in Wales at a major event this morning, attended by many of the party's candidates, as well as shadow cabinet ministers and representatives elected to the Senedd;
• Meanwhile, shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper will be out and about promoting the party's pledge to tackle crime and "rebuild safety on Britain's streets";
• But the party's message is being overshadowed by the continuing lack of clarity over whether veteran MP Diane Abbott will be able to stand as a Labour candidate - she told constituents last night she will be their MP for "as long as possible";
• And after repeatedly failing to rule out increasing taxes like VAT after multiple questions from journalists, such as Sky's Sam Coates - shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves finally did so last night after an attack from the Tories;
• Anas Sarwar will also be out campaigning as Scottish Labour continues its push to take the fight to the SNP and win back seats;
• Rishi Sunak will hit the campaign trail in the South East as he continues to try and make up his party's poll deficit;
• The Tories ' key focus is the economy, with the chancellor seemingly forcing Labour into ruling out any rises in VAT - and the PM pledging to lower taxes, arguing that voters should back his plans if they want interest rates to fall;
• The party is due to ramp up its criticism of Labour's economic plans, with new advertising due to be launched this morning;
• SNP leader John Swinney will be out meeting activists and talking to media this morning, before he faces First Minister's Questions in Holyrood at noon;
• The Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, will be in Somerset highlighting his party's call for a mental health professional to work in every school, with data showing 336,886 children are on mental health waiting lists;
• The Green Party will launch its general election campaign in Bristol this morning as it launches its bid to win more parliamentary seats;
• And Reform UK is launching its immigration policy at an event at lunchtime.

And in other news...

• Lord Cameron is heading to Prague in his official capacity of foreign secretary to attend an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers marking the 75th anniversary of the alliance's founding;
• He will also hold a series of bilateral meetings on the margins as the business of diplomacy continues, despite the election campaign.

Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has launched his campaign to be re-elected as the independent MP for Islington North tonight.

The candidate, who is independent after losing the party whip, said he is "disturbed" by the way Labour MP Diane Abbott "has been treated".

The party whip was restored to her yesterday, but she has claimed that she has been barred from standing for Labour in her Hackney North constituency.

Sir Keir Starmer denies this is the case.

Mr Corbyn told Sky News: "Whenever I read the feeds to her social media, my stomach churns with the abuse that she puts up.

"It's a threat she's suffered, the indignity that's been thrown at her. And she's come through it all so strong. 

"The last rally she went to: fantastic. 

"There were thousands of people there, particularly black women, who knew what it was like to suffer racism and weren't going to let it happen to Diane."

In a speech, Mr Corbyn promised to stand up for those "who aren't being served by our political system...who aren't being heard" and whose "demands fall on deaf ears".

The demands include an end to the occupation of Palestine, a fully public NHS, the abolition of the two-child benefit cap, public ownership of water and energy, and rent controls, according to his campaign.

"When I vote in parliament, I don't vote alone," Mr Corbyn concluded.

"I vote with my community - and our campaign will bring people of all ages, backgrounds and faiths together for a fairer society."

Rishi Sunak has been "a bad prime minister" since he took office two years ago, according to exclusive polling for Sky News.

The Great Britain poll - conducted on Monday and Tuesday this week by YouGov - put the Conservative Party 27 points behind Labour as the general election nears. 

But the survey also showed discontent with the Conservative leader.

Sir Keir Starmer didn't fare much better, according to the statistics, with 47% saying he would be "a bad prime minister" if he won the vote on 4 July. 

But in another blow for Mr Sunak, 19% of people who voted Conservative in 2019 said they would instead back Reform this time round, while 14% would go for Labour. 

The polling also found 42% of the public felt worse off than they did six months ago, despite the prime minister and has team repeatedly saying the economy had "turned a corner".

And 14% of those asked said they felt better off. 

Speaking in a Q&A earlier today, Mr Sunak said he was "not worried about the polls" after a stream of bad looking numbers for the Tories.

"The only poll that matters is the one on 4 July, when all of you get to choose our future, that's the one I am focused on," he said. 

"And as you can see, I hope, I am working my socks off to talk to as many people as I can over the next five weeks."

Trebling taxes for search engine and social media firms could fund a mental health professional in every primary and secondary school, the Liberal Democrats have said.

Party leader Sir Ed Davey said children are "being left in limbo" when they seek mental health care.

The Lib Dems have unveiled plans to employ mental health professionals in schools if they make it into government, which they claim could be funded through an increase to the Digital Services Tax - currently 2% on search engine, social media and online market place companies' revenues.

Sir Ed said: "Thousands of children are being left in limbo, forced to suffer intolerably long waits for mental health treatment.

"They are being failed by this Conservative government who have neglected the NHS and abandoned parents and children.

"Liberal Democrats would put a dedicated, qualified mental health professional in every school both primary and secondary, funded by a tax on the social media giants that are such a big part of the problem.

"Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to get rid of this appalling Conservative government and fix the health and care crisis."

• Sir Keir Starmer  was out and about in the West Midlands to promote his pledge to clear the backlog of patients waiting more than 18 weeks for NHS treatment within five years of government; 
• His shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting, told our political correspondent Tamara Cohen the NHS was "over-reliant" on overseas workers;
• But their message on the health service has been completely smothered by a lack of clarity on whether the veteran MP Diane Abbott will be able to stand for Labour at the general election;
• In short - Ms Abbott was suspended over a year ago due to comments suggesting Jewish people do not face racism, and that instead they suffer prejudice similar to "redheads";
• The party whip was restored yesterday - but she told Sky News that she has been barred from standing for the party at the election;
• The Labour leader said it in not the case, but "no decision has been taken"; 
• But at a rally in Hackney, Ms Abbott vowed to whatever it takes to stand for election and said: "I'm not going to allow myself to be intimidated or frightened by forces beyond all of our control";
• And Angela Rayner , the deputy leader of the Labour Party, has been cleared by HMRC over the tax on the sale of her former home, Sky News understands.
• Rishi Sunak  was in the South West of England promoting his promise to replace "rip-off degrees" with 100,000 apprenticeships each year by the end of the next parliament;
• Mr Sunak has lots of work to do to make up ground against Labour - an exclusive Sky News / YouGov poll reveals the opposition is a whopping 27 points ahead;
• But the PM insisted he was "not worried", telling a Q&A in Devon the only one that matters is on 4 July;
• The Tories also accused Labour of "scrambling to distract" from Labour's Diane Abbott row, after the party claimed Conservative pledges will leave people worse off;
• And the Home Office has been accused of having "little to show" for the money it has used on the Rwanda scheme, with a group of MPs claiming there is "not a credible plan";
• Elsewhere, Scotland's former health secretary Michael Matheson has been handed the most severe sanctions in Holyrood's history after racking up £11,000 roaming charges on his work iPad during a holiday in Morocco;
• The senior SNP MSP has been banned from the Scottish parliament for 27 days. He will also have his pay docked for 54 days;
• In Wales, the  Lib Dems  have been launching their campaign with a pledge to provide £1bn of extra funding for agriculture;
• And  Welsh first minister and Labour leader could be facing a vote of no confidence after the Welsh Tories tabled a motion.

We're still very much in the early days of the election campaign - but policy announcements are coming in thick and fast from the main two parties.

Here's a breakdown of what we've heard so far...

The Conservative Party

National service - The Conservatives have vowed to bring back a "modern" form of national service for 18-year-olds in the UK, which could involve military service of volunteer work.

'Triple lock plus' -   The party has promised to cut taxes for pensioners by creating a new "age-related" tax-free allowance - dubbed "triple lock plus". In short, a pensioner's allowance would rise in line with either average earnings, inflation or by 2.5% - whichever is higher - from next April.

Education - The Tories have promised to create a new qualification framework called the Advanced British Standard for those aged 16 to 18. The party also proposed making "some form" of maths and English compulsory up to the end of school.

Environment - Rishi Sunak has said he remains committed to plans to reach net zero by 2050, a goal adopted under Theresa May in 2019.

Apprenticeships - The prime minister wants to replace "rip-off" university degrees with 100,000 new apprentices a year, which he thinks will leave young people better off and with greater opportunities.

The Labour Party

Taxation - Labour has pledged not reverse the two recent cuts to national insurance - and not to increase income tax. 

Economy - Two flagship economic pledges from Labour are the abolition of the non-dom tax status held by some wealthy foreign nationals, and the introduction of VAT to private school fees.

Waiting lists - The party has said it will get the NHS "back on its feet" by delivering 40,000 more evening and weekend appointments per week, helped by "crack teams" to help staff clinics at those times.

Environment - A major policy pushed by Labour is the formation of Great British Energy, which would be publicly owned. The party claims this would reduce household energy bills and create jobs.

Education - Also a headline policy from Labour is a plan to recruit around 6,500 new teachers in key subjects - and create a "national excellence programme" to support professional development.

Earlier today, Darren Jones, Labour's shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, accused the Tories of launching a "severe" threat to family finances with their campaign pledges so far.

He claimed that the policy proposals - such as national service and a "triple-lock plus" for pensioners - could cost as much as £350 a month to mortgage holders.

Responding to this, a Conservative Party spokesman claimed "their own promises would come to a staggering £196.4bn of unfunded annual borrowing" under the same analysis.

The spokesman said: "Really this is pathetic, desperate stuff from the Labour Party as they scramble to distract from the fact it has been proven Keir Starmer lied on multiple occasions about the Diane Abbott investigation.

"Now the Labour leader is embroiled in a ‘he said, she said’ with the veteran Labour MP, sending their limp campaign into even more of a tailspin.

"Instead of sticking out shoddy documents with made-up figures, Keir Starmer needs to explain why he repeatedly lied about the status of the Diane Abbott investigation, and when he plans to apologise to the British people."
