Today we use jaunt to mean a short trip taken for pleasure, as in “a weekend jaunt to the lake.” But jaunts weren’t always about pleasure. Originally the word, which was sometimes rendered as jaunce , was for a trip or activity that left you tired or sore:

The origin of jaunt is unknown. And while there might be a temptation to connect the noun to the adjective jaunty (meaning “sprightly in manner or appearance”), that word is actually a modification of the French gentil , which once meant “noble.”

Sortie is a word most often found in military contexts, referring to a sudden issuing of troops from a defensive position or an air attack by a single plane.

In French-speaking countries, you might see the word SORTIE on signs that denote exits. It derives from the Middle French verb sortir , meaning “to go out” or “to leave.” Occasionally English use of the noun emphasizes the notion of going out for a journey intended for adventure or to achieve a task:

The etymology of sojourn points to a particular length of time. The Anglo-French verb sujurner derives from a Vulgar Latin verb that combined the Latin sub (“under, during”) with the Late Latin diurnum , meaning “day.” The noun journey took a similar route through the Anglo-French noun jur , also meaning “day.”

The most well-known sense of holiday in the US is for a day designated for a celebration or reflection, such as Memorial Day or Independence Day. The Old English hāligdæg means “holy day,” as early holidays were intended for religious observance.

Although found frequently enough in American English, the use of holiday to mean “vacation” has a British pedigree:

A junket can be any trip or journey, but it is used more specifically to refer to a trip taken at the expense of another (such as an employer). You might hear of an actor going on a press junket to promote a movie, for example.

Junket was once a popular term for any sweet dish. William Adlington's sixteenth-century translation of The Golden Ass of Apuleius (1566) lists a few examples: "Bread pasties, tartes, custardes and other delicate ionckettes dipped in honie." So how did a word for a food become a word for a trip?

The Latin noun juncus referred to a rush (a marsh plant used in the making of mats and baskets). The name junket (likely derived from the Italian giuncata ) was used for a kind of cream cheese stored in a container made from this material. From there the word came to refer to the dessert, then a pleasurable outing or feast at which such a dish might be served.

A sabbatical is a leave granted to someone (such as a professor) so that time can be devoted to research, writing, or some other project apart from their regular teaching job. Traditionally, a sabbatical is offered every seventh year of a teaching career and can last for an entire academic year.

Sabbatical is related to Sabbath , which also has to do with sevens as the Biblical day of rest after six days of labor. We trace the origins of both sabbatical and Sabbath to the Greek word sabbaton . Sabbaton itself traces to the Hebrew word shabbāth , meaning “rest.”

A recent coinage, staycation is a portmanteau of stay and vacation . It’s a perfect word to describe a time away from responsibilities that doesn’t involve traveling to distant places, whether due to financial limitations or simply a desire to stay home.

Between running a start-up company and wrapping up his graduate degree, Pierre Huguet is too busy to take a vacation this summer. “I don’t have much time to travel around, so I’ve decided to stay home,” he says. Are you planning a vacation and can’t choose between a short trip vs long trip? Keep reading to learn the pros and cons of both.

Vacations are a great way to recharge our batteries. We all need them after grinding away at our jobs for countless hours every week. Vacations help improve our mental health by allowing us to step away from our reality for a period of time and recharge our batteries. The question is: How long do you go for?

Everyone is different when it comes to how much time off we get. Typically, employees get between 3-4 weeks of paid vacation per year. Not everyone wants to go on a trip but those who do often struggle to decide whether to take it all at once or chop it up into shorter vacations.

Let’s dive in, break down the pros and cons of a short trip vs long trip and figure out how to decide which one to plan for your next getaway!

Pros and cons of taking a longer vacation

Pros of a long vacation, more time off.

When debating a short trip vs long trip, it may come down to how much time you have. Going on a long vacation – of 2 or more weeks gives you more time away from reality. It usually takes a few days to adjust to being off work but then you have more time to rest and relax. This goes a long way to finding motivation for when you get back to life. With a longer trip, you have more opportunities to see more places at your chosen destination. No one wants to sit on a resort for 2 or 3 weeks. Get out and experience the local culture, explore new cities, and learn new things. Check out these adventure vacations on a budget for inspiration.

Boost mental health

That extra week off can do wonders for our mental health. We all get lost in the grind sometimes and need to take a break from everyday life. 2 – 3 weeks off straight is a great way to accomplish this

Decreased burnout

Getting a proper recharge from work can lead to feeling less burnout at work. Some companies even mandate taking a full week off just to avoid burnout of their staff. Long vacations are a great way to decrease the burnout you are feeling.

Cons of a long vacation

Only going once a year.

If you have limited vacation days from work then taking a long trip could use up most of them in one go. This might be the right move however if you have a lot of plans for your vacation. Get the most out of it by booking around the holidays.

Stressing about work while away

Another downside of a long vacation is feeling stressed about work while you are away. If you had some big projects put on hold you probably can’t help but think about it. A break is necessary and so ask for someone to back you up while you are away.

Costs can stack up

Traveling isn’t cheap. Taking a long vacation can be much more costly if you are adding in multiple stops. Hotel rooms, eating out and all can really add up. On the flip side, you won’t have multiple flights like people who take several short trips a year.

Getting homesick

For some of us, being away from home for a long time isn’t normal. If you go on a long vacation, you could really start to miss the comforts of home, especially if you are taking an extended break that lasts for more than a month.

Lots of planning

Travel takes planning. A downside of a longer vacation is having to plan so many things. Sometimes life is already stressful enough without adding the need to plan a long vacation.

Pros and cons of taking a short vacation

Pros of a short vacation.

Taking several shorter (1 week or less) vacations in a year allows you to visit more places. You can spend a week in the Caribbean, a week in Europe, and a week at a local destination to get the most out of your vacation time assuming you get 3 weeks.

Go more often

Taking one long vacation means potentially only taking one vacation a year. But that means you have 11 months straight without a break. Taking smaller vacations gives you more breaks throughout the year. Traveling more often means more airport security, here are some tips you should check out .

Less expensive

While more flights could cost you a lot more, traveling for 1 week is much cheaper than traveling abroad for 3 weeks or more. It’s simple math. All those hotel rooms, excursions, food, and gifts will really add up. Not as bad if you only go away for a week.

Less boring, more fun

Spending multiple weeks in one place can be boring. But being there for a week can be a lot of fun. You fit in everything you want to do and don’t have a chance to get bored.

Less Planning

Cons of a short vacation

Not enough time to recharge.

A short vacation can simply not be enough to give you the break you deserve. It can take a few days to settle in and start relaxing and by that point, you’re already thinking about going back. If this is you, take some extra time off to truly disconnect.

Over before you know it

Vacations can fly by. This is especially true for a short vacation. You’re having so much fun in a short period of time it can feel like a blur. Don’t forget to try and fit in some quiet time and perhaps even some mindfulness to soak in the experience.

Limited time for activities

Short trips can mean not having enough time to do all the amazing activities a place has to offer. Make sure you choose wisely to get into what activities you are craving. Sometimes there is just never enough time in a day.

Risks of cancellations

A flight cancellation could easily eliminate 1-2 days of your trip. This is always a risk with shorter vacations and it’s best to be prepared for that. With a longer vacation, missing 1-2 days might not seem as bad.

There is no clear answer to whether taking a short trip vs long trip is right for you. It totally depends from person to person. To decide you really need to reflect on your personal circumstances and goals. If you want to see multiple places in a year, then taking several shorter trips is the right way to go. If you are stressed out at work and need to truly decompress, maybe take an extra week so you get the time off you need.

Planning a Short Trip: A Step by Step Guide to Getting the Most out of Travel

It’s possible to travel, have new experiences, and live an adventurous life while pursuing a career, education, or other dreams. I believe this, live this as much as I can, and it’s the vision behind my blog. My trips over the last few years have ranged from 3 days to 3 weeks, and I’ve loved every single one. I’ve learned a lot and come up with all kinds of strategies to make the most of these trips. In this post, I’m passing these on to you!

Every strategy that I use to maximize a short trip is in this post.

Chances are, if you’re like most people then you’re not aspiring to a globe trotter existence or van life. Travel can be a passion without being the only thing you do! My trips up to now have all been in between semesters of University (I just finished my H. B.Sc in Neuroscience, yay!) – and if you’re here, then you’re probably travelling in between classes, work projects, or some other important aspect of your life, too.

Which means you don’t have infinite time for travel, and you want to maximize your time in a destination once you arrive. Well, you’ve come to the right place.  Let’s start planning your next adventure!

Planning a Short Trip

1. choose your destination.

The destination does matter when you have limited time. If you’ve only got a weekend, a 24 hour long flight there and back definitely doesn’t make sense.  The farthest that I’ve travelled over a weekend was from Ottawa (my home) to Orlando, Florida, so that I could spend a weekend at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It was fantastic, and totally worth it.  What Harry Potter-themed trip isn’t fantastic and totally worth it, though, really?

Things to Consider

• Travel-time:  If you’re flying to the other side of the world, I do think it’s good to stay for at least a week. That’s a long trek, and probably an expensive flight so do get your time and money’s worth. 
• Time zones:  Particularly if you know that you’re prone to jet lag, make sure you won’t loose too much of your trip to exhaustion. Personally, I prefer not to change time zones by more than 2 hours for a weekend trip, or by more than 5-6 hours for a week. If you have 5 full days or less, stay within a 3 hour time difference. If you have a week or more, go up to a 6 or 7 hour difference if you want. Once you hit 8 hours, that’s a two week + trip (at least in my book).

2. Prioritize Your Activities and Sights

This is the biggest, most frequent question that people ask me. How do you decide what to see and do when there are so many amazing options?

I always start my sightseeing-plan the same way: a Top 3 list .

What are the 3 things you absolutely, most-definitely, can’t leave without seeing or doing? Hypothetically, let’s say you’re never going back again… what are the things that you really, really want to see? And for those of you who think you probably will return so you want to save a few highlights for a future trip, don’t worry about that. Wherever you go, you will always discover other things to do that you didn’t originally know about that will make you want to return.

Here are a couple examples from my own trips:

• Philadelphia: Eastern State Penn, City Hall Observation Deck, and the Beyond the Bell Women’s History Tour. ( 2 Days in Philadelphia )
• Montreal:  a Food Tour, Old Montreal Walking Tour, Mont Royal Observation Point. ( 3 Days in Montreal )
• New York City: Top of the Rock, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge.

Travelling with another person? Perfect, get their list as well . There’s often cross over, because most cities have particular places and attractions they’re known for, but it’s ok if there’s not.

Make an “others” list, too. What other things would be great to see, time permitting? I typically do this on one piece of paper. The column on the left is my Top 3 , and the column on the right is  others.

Tips for Choosing What to See and Do

Overwhelmed? There are so many choices, depending on where you’re going. Here are some tips for choosing:

• Pick  experiences  and sites that are unique to that place:  what  can’t you do or see someplace else in the world, that is unique to the place you’re visiting? Depending on where you live, some of the major attractions in a place you’re visiting might actually be things you can see, or have seen the equivalent of, elsewhere. Consider whether a museum you’re thinking of, for example, will be very similar to another museum you’ve been to. This is particularly true of science and natural history museums, in my  experience! The Titanic Museum in Belfast on the other hand, is only in Belfast. That’s something you can’t see elsewhere.
• Choose things that can’t just be seen online:  it’s worth doing a little bit of research and finding out if there’s more to a place then just the view you’ve seen on Instagram. If you really want to go somewhere, go – but know that in some places if you’ve seen a photo, you’ve seen it all. Top of the Rock in New York is actually a really good example. If you love photos and want your own photo there, go. The photos you’ve seen already are it though. There’s nothing else there (though it is a cool view).
• Go for variety:  to get a feel for a new place, it helps to see it in different ways. Doing and seeing different types of things on your trip will make it more memorable, and feel as if you had more unique experiences. Going to see churches, castles, iconic buildings, or anything else that there are multiple of one after the other can feel repetitive. Spice it up! I often like at least one walking tour or place to walk around, a museum or historical site , and a great view !

• Philadelphia: Eastern State Penn (historical site), City Hall Observation Deck (great view), and the Beyond the Bell Women’s History Tour (walking tour).

3. Research Suggested Itineraries

The things on your Top 3 list have already been on someone else’s. There’s probably a blog about it (maybe even on this site)! Take advantage and let some planning be done for you. I always look up suggested itineraries and guides that contain the specific places that I want to see before I travel, because these often give recommendations within the same area of the city, restaurants that are nearby, other places to see, and so one.

Google: the beauty of Google is that you can look up blog posts and website that contain the specific places that you want to go. Just structure your search! When you type a term in to Google, the search engine will give back results for that term, and closely related ones. If you add quotation marks around a term in your search, only results containing that exact phrase will come up. Combine both to find sample itineraries that contain specific places. Here’s an example: 4 day London itinerary + “Tower of London”

This way, Google knows that it’s ok if there’s a spin on the words “ 4 Day London Itinerary ,” so it might also bring up London in 4 Days, or Weekend in London. Whatever variation of an itinerary it brings up, the term “Tower of London” will definitely be included in the post, because you put quotation marks around it.

Pinterest: much like Google, Pinterest is a search engine. The only difference is that the results are visual, and the posts included were actively added by Pinterest users (whereas Google indexes websites itself). Pinterest is a great place to find blog posts, and these are going to come mostly from fellow travellers, and not include big travel websites. Itineraries and activities are best found on Pinterest by searching for your destination, then clicking or typing in one of the suggested sub-searches. Examples:  London -> Itineraries

City Pass and Tourism Websites:  Whether or not you’re purchasing a City Card or Sightseeing Pass (to be honest, I do recommend at least one day using a pass of some sort if you’re short on time) these websites often have suggested itineraries for different areas of a city that can be helpful for your planning. On multiple occasions, I’ve followed pass itineraries to a tee and been very happy with it!

4. Plan With a Map.

Ready with your Top 3 list ? Perfect, pull up a map! If you’re only visiting for one day, you might have already planned the entire day by making a Top 3 list, but if you’ve got 2 or more days it’s time to add more activities by using the map to find out what’s nearby.

How many days do you have? If it’s just one, then you’ve nearly planned your entire trip. Got 2 or 3? You can do one or two per day. 4 or more, and you’ve got lots of space to plan. While you’re planning, pull up a map. There’s no sense in darting back and forth across the city everyday if you don’t have to.  

Start by looking up your Top 3. If they’re all within walking distance, you’re all set for a day. Otherwise, put one per day (if possible). The good things about cities in particular is that major attractions typically revolve around the downtown cores so you’re often within walking distance of great activities.  

Once you’ve found your Top 3, take a look for anything that was on your “other” list. I often do this by using the “get directions” buttons from one of my top 3 to another, or to something on the “others” list. Compare distances and start to build your days around different areas.

Buckingham Palace, for example, isn’t that close to the Tower of London. It’s close enough that if both were on your Top 3 list and you only one day in London, you could easily get from one to another on the tube or a hop on and off bus tour. However, they’re not walking distance. Buckingham Palace is walking distance to Westminster Abbey, though, and the Tower of London Near Tower Bridge and St Paul’s. The more that you can build your itinerary for a day within one, walking-friendly area, the more you will be able to fit in to that day.

On Google maps, if you zoom in close enough to major attractions, other nearby ones will often appear, too. This is a great way to find out what’s nearby to your chosen sites, and maybe discover some you weren’t thinking of.

5. Leave room for last minute changes and additions.

There are always things that have to be booked in advance, but wherever possible leave your plans a little bit open ended. I recommend having an outline for every day, but if you don’t have to finalize a booking before you go then you can leave some days open for potential changes.

The reality is, you’re not going to see everything anyways. There will have to compromises, always . It’s better to have a plan that you can change than to have no plan at all.

Make sure you research when to book attractions, though. I didn’t get to tour Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco, for example, because it books months in advance. Kilmainham Gail in Dublin typically needs to be booked 3 days in advance. (There’s a theme here, eh? Let’s keep it going.) Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, however, needs no pre-booking for regular access, so you can just show up.

Here are a couple examples of last-minute changes that I’ve made:

• Powerscourt was on my Ireland itinerary, but I went to Belfast instead.
• The Botanical Gardens in Puerto Rico were closed the day we planned to go, so off we went to El Yunque Rainforest
• I planned a museum day in Iceland using the Reyjavik City Card, and actually wound up doing that. We bought the passes at a Tourism office the night before.

It’s not unplanned, it’s just a flexible plan. I think it’s good to leave things flexible about 25% of the time. On a 2 day trip, leave at least an afternoon. Got 4 days, leave a day, and so on.  

6. Plan the Logistics

There are a couple of logistical decisions that can go a long way in being able to see and do everything that you want to!

Stay somewhere central or on a major route:  The more you can reduce time spent traveling around once you’re at your destination, the better. That said, the most central accommodations are not always available or feasible. In this situation, make a point of finding somewhere that is on a major transit route so that you have a clear, direct route to all the action.

Do a Grocery Shop When you Arrive:  This tip may or may not work for you depending on how you feel about trying new foods. I like to eat out once or twice on a trip, but the rest of the time I pack my own lunches. Plan time to stop at a grocery store on your first day, and grab snacks and lunch foods. If you need a snack, you can pull a granola bar and banana out of your bag and munch while you make your way to your next stop. No wandering around deciding where to eat or waiting in line ups when you could be exploring.

Pre-Plan Your Transportation:  Take a good look at public transit, trains, or the maps for driving around once you arrive at your destination. When I arrive at a new destination, I’ve already got a few maps in the screenshots of my phone and notes for the bus routes.

I often wonder if City Passes are worth it as a lot of time can pass at one site and you may not have enough time to see the others on the list! That happened in London. That puts me off from buying them.

At least 27 people have been killed in Rafah since Monday. Here's what you should know

At least 27 people , including six women and nine children, were killed in  Rafah since Monday evening, CNN confirmed through hospital sources in the southern Gaza city.

Israel's military has seized control of the Gazan side of the Rafah crossing , an Israeli military official said Tuesday. International pressure is growing against Israel following the seizure and after it refused to rule out a full-scale invasion in Rafah.

And on Tuesday, rockets were fired from the Rafah area in the Gaza Strip toward Kerem Shalom and the Re’im area of southern Israel, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Here are other headlines you should know:

Rafah offensive and hospital crises:

• Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel’s military operation in  Rafah  serves the twin goals of returning the hostages held in Gaza and eliminating Hamas. Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s war cabinet, said the Israeli military’s operations in  Rafah  will “ continue and expand as necessary.”
• The last remaining operational hospital in Rafah has issued a call for all available medical teams to help with the constant influx of injured patients arriving at the medical facility. 

The remaining field hospitals in the area of an eastern Rafah hospital that was evacuated Monday will only be able to provide less than one-third of its offered services, according to the hospital medical director.

Ceasefire negotiations:

• Hamas’ latest written response in ongoing  ceasefire negotiations  said the group intends to offer Israel the corpses of dead hostages in addition to hostages who are still alive, during the first phase of the truce, according to sources familiar with the talks. A senior representative of Hamas says the proposed deal it agreed to includes the “ withdrawal of the occupation from the Gaza Strip.”
• CIA Director Bill Burns returned to Cairo on Tuesday for more talks, a source familiar with the meetings told CNN, as the US and other mediators look to revive an effort to bring about a ceasefire-for-hostages deal.

Aid into Gaza:

• The US finished the offshore construction of the temporary humanitarian pier system, also known as JLOTS, meant to get aid into Gaza, according to the Defense Department.
• US National security spokesperson John Kirby stressed it is “ absolutely critical ” that Israel allow humanitarian aid into Gaza after Israel’s military seized control of crossings at Kerem Shalom and Rafah, blocking two vital points for aid into the Strip. According to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, Israel “ has committed to reopen ” the  Kerem Shalom  crossing on Wednesday.

US President Joe Biden delivers speech on antisemitism:

• Biden on Tuesday opened a speech on antisemitism at the US Capitol honoring the victims of the Holocaust and warning that the memories of that genocide might be sliding from the public's perception.
• Biden drew connections between the Holocaust and the October 7 attack on Israel and pointed to a " ferocious surge " in antisemitism in the US since the October 7 attack, while offering a sweeping call for a return to the nation's values.

Ongoing campus protests:

• Students in the Spanish capital set up a pro-Palestinian protest encampment at the Complutense University of Madrid on Tuesday. Like many of their counterparts around the world , the several dozen students are asking the university to divest from Israel-linked businesses and entities, as well as requesting the Spanish government cut diplomatic and commercial ties with Israel, according to a CNN en Español team on the ground.

Rafah hospital director says closure will severely impact health care in the area

The evacuation to Kareem “happened against our will” after the Israel Defense Forces told people in eastern Rafah they must leave the area, according to Abu Yusuf Najjar Hospital medical director Marwan Al-Homss.

Al Homss confirmed the hospital is now out of service including care for nearly 400 kidney dialysis patients. He said after it closed, vandalism started that led to the theft of fuel that was running the generators.

Hospital crews didn't leave until all patients were evacuated, he said.

“They were afraid for their lives, and afraid of being killed because of previous instances where Israelis abuse the patients and medical crews,” Al-Homss said. “Now, with this hospital being out of service, the remaining field hospitals won't be able to account for 30% of the services Abu Yusuf Najjar provided.”

 Al-Homss said that over the past 48 hours, more than 56 people in the area had been killed, of whom 40% were children.

CNN is unable to confirm his estimate.

IDF says nearly 20 rockets fired from Rafah Tuesday

Rockets were fired from the Rafah area in the Gaza Strip Tuesday toward Kerem Shalom and the Re’im area of southern Israel, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Six projectiles were fired toward Kerem Shalom, the IDF said. 

“The projectiles that were fired toward the area of the Kerem Shalom Crossing are preventing the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. The IDF will continue to operate to enable the necessary security conditions to re-open the Kerem Shalom Crossing,” the IDF said.

The Kerem Shalom crossing, one of the main conduits for humanitarian aid into Gaza, was closed Sunday after a rocket attack nearby killed four Israeli soldiers. It is due to reopen Wednesday, according to the US State Department.

The IDF said about 12 projectiles were also identified crossing from the area of Rafah in southern Gaza into the area of Re'im earlier today. The IDF Aerial Defense Array successfully intercepted five of the projectiles and the rest fell in an open area. No injuries were reported.

“Within less than an hour, IAF aircraft struck the launcher that fired toward Israel.”

Analysis: Hamas has proposed a ceasefire deal. Here’s why it won’t bring an immediate end to the war

When Hamas declared on Monday evening that it has “agreed” to a ceasefire deal, it caught many off guard. Israel was evidently not expecting it, and it was not even immediately clear what Hamas had agreed to.

Hamas’ announcement was initially met with jubilation in Gaza and cautious optimism by regional leaders after it was presented as an acceptance of an Israeli proposal. But Israel issued what looked like a holding position, saying that Hamas’ position was “far from” meeting its demands.

And it pressed on with a controversial military operation in Rafah, southern Gaza, conducting air strikes on Monday and seizing control of the Palestinian side of a border crossing with Egypt on Tuesday morning amid intense pressure from his hardline coalition to go all-in.

At the same time, Israel said that it would send a delegation to Cairo to assess Hamas’ position. The CIA director, Bill Burns, also arrived in Cairo on Tuesday morning.

Us has completed humanitarian pier construction off gaza shore.

The US has finished the offshore construction of the temporary humanitarian pier system, also known as JLOTS, meant to get aid into Gaza, according to the Defense Department.

“As of today, the construction of the two portions of the JLOTS, the floating pier and the Trident pier, are complete and awaiting final movement offshore,” announced Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh at a briefing.

However, due to weather, the US military is unable to move the pier into position to be anchored ashore in Gaza, according to Singh.

“Today there are still forecasted high winds and high sea swells, which are causing unsafe conditions for the JLOTS components to be moved, so the pier sections and military vessels involved in its construction are still positioned at the Port of Ashdod,” said Singh.

But Singh added that the US is loading aid meant to be unloaded at the temporary pier on the ship MV Sagamore, which is currently in Cyprus. 

“The Sagamore is a cargo vessel that will use the JLOTS system, and will make trips between Cyprus and the offshore floating pier as USAID and other partners collect aid from around the world,” said Singh.

CNN first reported last week that the Sagamore will be the first vessel used to transport the aid from Cyprus to the pier, but US officials hope that aid groups will eventually begin contracting their own vessels to deliver the aid. 

Singh also said that while the pier's movement would depend on weather and security conditions, the Defense Department hopes to have it in position “later this week.” 

Hamas official says proposed deal includes Israeli withdrawal from Gaza

A senior representative of Hamas says the proposed deal it agreed to includes the “withdrawal of the occupation from the Gaza Strip.”

Osama Hamdan, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, told a news conference in Beirut that the proposed deal would secure "the main issues of the demands of our people and our resistance in stopping the aggression permanently, the withdrawal of the occupation from the entire Gaza Strip, the free return of the displaced, relief, reconstruction, ending the siege, and achieving a real and serious exchange deal.”

Hamdan said the proposed deal's three phases would be continuously implemented, claiming that Israel wanted “to complete one stage, in which it would achieve the release of its prisoners held by the resistance, and then resume its aggression against the Gaza Strip.”

Referring to Egypt and Qatar, Hamdan said that “the mediator brothers, if their proposal is approved…will have a role in completing all stages of the agreement, and putting pressure on the occupation to adhere to its provisions and implement them.”

Israel has said there are significant gaps between what Hamas has agreed to and what was on the table in previous rounds of negotiations. In a statement Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Hamas proposal “was designed to torpedo the entry of our forces into Rafah. That did not happen.”

Netanyahu said that “as the war cabinet unanimously determined, the Hamas proposal was very far from Israel's core demands.”

The White House said Tuesday that a close reading of Israel and Hamas’ separate negotiating positions on a hostage deal indicates the two sides should be able to strike an agreement.

National security spokesman John Kirby's comment was a fresh sign of optimism about the state of hostage talks after they appeared to stall Monday. CIA Director Bill Burns was in Cairo Tuesday for continued discussions.

US State Department walks back "prelude" comment on Israeli operation in Rafah

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller walked back his comment that Israel's seizure of the Rafah crossing looked like a "prelude" to a major military operation, saying, “we don’t know if it’s a prelude or not.”

He had earlier told a press conference that the seizure of the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza looks like a "prelude" to a major military operation.

“They have described it as limited. It looks at this (point) to not be the major operation that you would see say, for example, if they entered the neighborhoods where they ordered the evacuations,” Miller said when asked about his earlier comments at the State Department briefing.

“They have made clear that they intend to launch a major military operation and we have made clear that we are opposed to that,” Miller added.

Satellite imagery shows a fire in eastern Rafah and border movements

New satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies shows how the area near to the Egypt-Gaza Rafah crossing has changed in the hours since Israel's operation there. The images were taken this afternoon at 2:26 p.m. local time. 

One image shows a fire at the Arab Mall in eastern Rafah, just a mile north of the Egypt-Gaza crossing. It's unclear what started the fire, but there have been Israeli military strikes in the area. 

In northern Rafah, the area filled with tents from refugees appears to remain largely unchanged from days past. 

On the Egyptian side of the border, aid trucks that had gathered at the Egyptian border complex have since been moved into a buffer zone near the Gaza border. In recent months, Egypt worked to bulldoze the area and build a new wall along its Gaza border.

The roadway connecting the Egypt-Gaza border is also seen sealed on the Egyptian side by large cement walls. Egypt has periodically sealed this roadway section at the border since the start of the Israeli incursion into Gaza.

Labour will create a new Border Security Command to tackle people-smuggling gangs bringing migrants across the Channel, Sir Keir Starmer is set to announce.

The "elite" unit, to be part-funded by scrapping the Tories' Rwanda deportation scheme, will be led by a former police, military or intelligence chief and be granted new powers under the Counter Terrorism Act.

These powers will allow officers to conduct stop and searches at the border, carry out financial investigations and issue search and seizure warrants targeting organised immigration crime.

Sir Keir will outline the measures in a speech on the Kent coast on Friday, when he will vow to "replace gimmicks with graft" and draw on his experience as the former head of the Crown Prosecution Service.

Lord Cameron has just delivered his second speech of the day - this time at the Lord Mayor's banquet in central London.

Here are the key points of what he said (this post was updated live):

• The foreign secretary opens by saying: "I thought my days of dressing up in white tie and speaking in halls like this were well and truly over, so I want to thank PM Rishi Sunak for bringing me out of retirement";
• He says his six month as the UK's top diplomat "have been every bit a whirlwind as much as being prime minister" - but "not quite as exciting";
• Lord Cameron argues that foreign policy cannot be divorced from economic performance;
• He says movements to "pull up the drawbridge" and retreat into isolationism are "profoundly wrong" - but they cannot be ignored;
• The current dangerous world is "in stark contrast to my first years in politics", he says, and argues we must "face up to that situation";
• "My conviction is that we, with our partners, can choose to make a difference - we have agency. The question is whether we have the courage to use it, the courage to act";
• He says the government is "hardening" defences against attacks on our infrastructure - both physical and cyber following recent attacks;

Lord Cameron will be donning his white tie at Mansion House for a slightly shorter version of the speech he gave this morning on the UK's foreign policy and national security.

The government has triggered emergency plans to be able to hold prisoners in police cells due to a shortage of places in the system - and is blaming it on barristers taking industrial action.

Operation Safeguard triggers the availability of cells in police stations for prisoners sentenced by the courts when there is a critical shortage of normal spaces.

Sky News understands the Ministry of Justice has formally requested that a limited number of cells be made available.

The government insists that this is "not an unprecedented measure" and has been deployed over four periods since 2006 - and most recently in February and April this year.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said the emergency measure "is helping us respond to acute capacity pressures caused in part by barristers' industrial action and the aftermath of the pandemic, while we press ahead with delivering the biggest expansion of prison places in a century including six new jails".

On this episode, Niall Paterson speaks to one of the doctors who worked to restore the hearing of an 18-month-old girl – who was born deaf.

Medics at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge have used gene therapy to help a rare condition, auditory neuropathy. It's caused by the disruption of nerve impulses travelling from the inner ear to the brain.

In a dramatic move just moments before Prime Minister's Questions got under way this week, Natalie Elphicke joined Labour as her surprised Conservative colleagues looked on.

What exactly happens when an MP defects to another party?

Ms Elphicke  is far from the first MP to change sides between elections, but it was incredibly rare - until recently - for a member of the governing party to switch to the opposition.

She is the third Tory to do so in just over two years, following  Christian Wakeford in 2022  over the partygate scandal and  Dan Poulter just two weeks ago  over the Tories' handling of the NHS.

Before that, it hadn't happened since 1995, when Alan Howarth became the first ever Conservative to cross to Labour on the eve of his party conference, citing the "divisiveness" of policies under John Major's leadership.

Only three MPs in the past 25 years have gone the other way - from main opposition to government - all leaving the Conservatives to join Labour.

Defecting to smaller parties happens more often, such as moves  from both Conservative and Labour to Change UK  during the Brexit years, or  Douglas Carswell  and  Mark Reckless  heading over to UKIP ahead of the referendum.

John Swinney has axed the post of minister for independence from his ministerial team.

The role, the first of its kind, was created last year by then first minister Humza Yousaf.

Jamie Hepburn, who previously held the Scottish government post, has now taken over from George Adam as minister for parliamentary business.

Earlier on Thursday, SNP MP Alyn Smith appeared to confirm during a radio interview that the role had been "subsumed" into Angus Robertson's constitution, external affairs and culture brief.

Mr Swinney was  legally sworn in as Scotland's seventh first minister   at the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Wednesday morning.

Traveling internationally with a dog — or adopting one from abroad — just got a bit more complicated. The CDC issued new rules intended to reduce the risk of importing rabies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new rules Wednesday aimed at preventing dogs with rabies from coming into the United States.

Under the new regulations, all dogs entering the U.S. must appear healthy, must be at least six months old, must have received a microchip, and the owner must verify the animal either has a valid rabies vaccine or has not been in a country where rabies is endemic in the last six months.

Dogs coming from a country that is considered at high risk for rabies and who received a rabies vaccine from another country must meet additional criteria. Those include getting a blood test before they leave the other country to make sure the animal has immunity against rabies, a physical examination upon arrival and getting a U.S. rabies vaccine. If the dog doesn't have a blood test showing immunity, it must be quarantined for 28 days.

These are much stricter requirements than existing regulations for dog importation — for those who want to adopt from abroad and for those traveling internationally with their pets.

Vaccine hesitancy affects dog-owners, too, with many questioning the rabies shot.

But, U.S pet owners shouldn't panic, says Dr. Emily Pieracci , a CDC veterinary medicine officer. "This really isn't a big change," she says. "It sounds like a lot, but not when you break it down, it's really not a huge inconvenience for pet owners."

Rabies was eliminated in dogs in the United States in 2007 , but unvaccinated canines can still contract the disease from rabid wildlife such as raccoons, skunks or bats.

And rabies remains one of the deadliest diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans around the world. Globally, about 59,000 people die from rabies each year. The illness is nearly always fatal once a person begins to experience symptoms .

Today, pet dogs in the United States are routinely vaccinated against rabies.

"This new regulation is really set to address the current challenges we're facing," Pieracci says. Those include an increased risk of disease "because of the large-scale international movement of dogs," she adds, as well as fraudulent documentation for imported dogs.

The U.S. imports an estimated 1 million dogs each year. In 2021, amid a surge of pandemic-inspired dog adoptions, the CDC suspended importations from 113 countries where rabies is still endemic because of an increase in fraudulent rabies vaccination certificates. The countries include Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, Colombia, Russia, Vietnam, North Korea, Nepal, China and Syria.

That suspension will end when the new rules go into effect Aug. 1.

"This will bring us up to speed with the rest of the international community which already has measures in place to prevent the importation of of rapid dogs," Pieracci said. "So, we're playing catch-up in a sense."

The new regulations replace rules that date back to 1956. Those rules only required that dogs be vaccinated before entering the country.

"As you can imagine a lot has changed since then," Pieracci says. "International travel has increased dramatically and people's relationships with dogs have changed since the 1950s. During that time, it really wasn't common for dogs to be considered family member. They didn't sleep in peoples' beds. They certainly didn't accompany them on international trips."

The new rules won praise from the American Veterinary Medical Association . The organization "is pleased to see the implementation of this new rule that will help protect public health and positively impact canine health and welfare," said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the AVMA in a statement to NPR.

Dog rescue advocates also welcomed the changes.

"This updated regulation will allow us to continue bringing dogs to the U.S. safely and efficiently," Lori Kalef, director of programs for SPCA International, said in a statement.

"We have seen that dogs have been a lifeline for U.S. service members during their deployments. One of our key programs reunites these service members and their animal companions here in the U.S. once they have returned home," she said. "The CDC's commitment to improving its regulations has a profound impact on the animals and service members we support, and this new policy is an important piece of that effort."

Airbnb listings and other short-term vacation rentals in Hawaii are one step closer to being phased out as the state grapples with a housing crisis exacerbated by last year’s wildfires on Maui.

A bill with the potential to reshape vacation rental regulation across the state passed the Senate and the House on Wednesday and now awaits Hawaii Gov. Josh Green’s signature – who already promised to sign it if it hits his desk. If signed, the new law will go into effect on January 1. 

SB2919 would grant each Hawaii county the authority to redefine zoning ordinances, including converting short-term rentals into long-term residential housing, in order to “guide the overall future development of the county.” Those who violate the law would be charged a fine of $10,000 per day.

Significant change won’t happen overnight, but it is the first major legislation regulating short-term vacation rentals statewide, according to Hawaii Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, who introduced the bill. 

“It’s huge,” Keohokalole told USA TODAY.

The bill actually overturns a 1957 ordinance that drove Native Hawaiian communities from their homes and converted their land into sugar plantations. Many of the other zoning ordinances are outdated, Keohokalole said, and don’t reflect the influx of foreign investors or overtourism.

“We know the majority of STRs (short-term rentals) in Hawaii are illegal, owned by non-residents, and contribute to skyrocketing housing costs,” Gov. Green posted on X , formerly Twitter, last week. “We support Senate Bill 2919 to empower counties to regulate STRs and potentially phase them out.”

Housing affordability in Hawaii has worsened over the past two decades. A single-family home cost four times as much in 2023 than in 2000, and less than one-third of households can even afford the typical local home, according to the Hawaii Housing Factbook by the Economic Research Organization and the University of Hawaii. Rents also continue to rise, and Maui has the most expensive median rent in the state – a typical apartment is $2,500 a month. 

Part of that is due to the high percentage of short-term rentals in Hawaii’s housing stock. About 30,000 of Hawaii’s 557,000 total housing units, or 5.5%, are short-term rentals, compared to cities like Las Vegas, where only 3% are short-term rentals, the report said. It’s even worse in Maui, where vacation rentals account for 15% of the island’s total housing supply. 

August’s wildfires, which destroyed the majority of Lahaina and displaced thousands of West Maui residents, only amplified the housing crisis on Maui. “With Lahaina, we’re in an emergency situation,” Jordan Ruidas of Native Hawaiian-led community organization Lahaina Strong told USA TODAY. 

“The fire burned away the majority of our working-class housing,” she said. “We’re in shambles, and people are still waiting for long-term housing.” 

Ruidas said around 3,000 displaced residents are still living in hotels, over eight months since the fires ravaged West Maui. Some are leaving Hawaii entirely due to the lack of stable long-term housing. 

“What’s become clearer, at least in Lahaina and that outlying community, is that so much of the housing stock on that part of the island has been converted into vacation rentals that the survivors are struggling to find places to live,” said Keohokalole.

Maui County Mayor Bissen has said that he wants to “increase the inventory of available long-term units for people of Maui” and even proposed tax incentives for owners to convert their units into long-term housing in November.

“It’s not an inventory problem, it’s the fact that the inventory is being used for something that’s not helping the community,” said Ruidas.
