Skipton itself has much to offer visitors and should certainly be added to your list of places to visit if you haven’t had the pleasure of exploring the town already.

To help you plan your itinerary for your next trip to Skipton, we’ve put together a guide on things to do in Skipton…

37 of the best things to do in Skipton…

Skipton High Street

Over the years, Skipton’s high street has transformed beyond recognition, whilst retaining its beautiful architecture and having many intricate details for visitors and locals to enjoy all year round. The people of Skipton are famous for being amongst the friendliest in the country, too! If you visit on a market day, you’ll find a buzzing offering of stalls at the UK’s best small outdoor market! Be sure to check out the side streets too as Skipton’s independent shops are scattered around and many you won’t want to miss!

Craven Court Shopping Centre

skipton tourist attractions

Craven Court is a beautiful small Victorian shopping arcade set over two floors. In here, you’ll find a wonderful selection of quirky independent shops alongside a few bigger names. There’s also great tea rooms on the upper floor with lots of dining space on the balcony where you can tuck into homemade dishes whilst watching the shoppers below. A great little place for finding unique gifts and if you’re a Harry Potter fan, then The Geek Side will be right up your street with their entire floor dedicated to HP merchandise.

Aireville Park

A short distance from the canal towpath is Aireville Park, which consists of 20 acres of parkland. Many years ago it was owned by the Dewhurst family, and was part of Aireville Estate. It is now managed by Craven District Council. As well as a multi-use games area for sports of all types, there is an 18 hole pitch and putt golf course, a swimming pool and fitness centre and an excellent children’s playground. The new wooden playground was added to the park just a couple of years ago and is full of exciting play equipment for children of all ages. There’s even a small zip line!

Coffee and Clay

Located at the top of Skipton High Street, Coffee and Clay looks like your average cafe from the outside. However, on the top floor of the building is an area dedicated to pottery painting. Great fun with or without children, Coffee and Clay let you unleash your creativity on an unsuspecting teapot whilst demolishing one of their delicious lunches. Open Monday to Saturday 09:30 – 16:15 and Sundays 10:30 – 16:15.

Billy Bob’s Parlour

Billy Bob’s Parlour is a fantastic American-style diner just outside Skipton with fun interiors, exciting menus and excellent children’s play areas. If you’re a fan of fast food then this is a great little place to eat. Their play barn and outdoor play area will provide plenty of entertainment for the little ones once you’ve finished tucking into burgers, hotdogs, American pancakes and indulgent ice-cream sundaes. Make sure you book your table in advance as this place gets booked up incredibly quickly! It is certainly one of the most popular family restaurants in the area.

The Plaza Cinema

Skipton’s cinema only has one screen so you’re not going to be spoiled for choice when picking a film. However, a cosy little local cinema such as the Plaza is perfect for families with young children who want to avoid the extortionate costs and crowds often associated with larger cinema chains. Check their website to see what films are showing and head down to the Plaza for a cosy, family film night!

The Cake’ole

skipton tourist attractions

Okay, so strictly speaking this isn’t just for kids but they will certainly enjoy a visit! The Cake’ole in Skipton’s Craven Court Shopping Centre is a quirky little cafe serving light bites, milkshakes and some absolutely delicious cakes. Their huge cakes are made daily so you never know what flavours will be on offer until you arrive. Typically, they have a display table with 5 or 6 delicious and beautifully decorated three-tier cakes which are always incredibly difficult to choose between. We recommend getting their cake platter and sharing numerous slices with friends. These guys really know how to make a cake and have made a few for some famous names including Mel B and Gogglebox cast members. For a real treat opt for their Afternoon Tier. They also do a great one specifically for kids which includes lots of fun treats.

The Chocolate Works

skipton tourist attractions

A relatively new addition to Skipton is The Chocolate Works. This delightful chocolate-themed cafe sits on Sheep Street and has both indoor and outdoor seating. Their menu is perfect for chocoholics and their delicious bubble waffles are a wonderful calorific treat!

Romantic things to do in Skipton

Dinner for two.

There is no shortage of restaurants in Skipton. They have Mexican, American, Indian, Thai, Chinese and French restaurants and a superb selection of pubs serving home-cooked food. If you’re looking for a romantic dining experience, head to Le Caveau or Le Bistro des Amis . Both of these offer an ambience perfect for those intimate dinner dates and they serve some of the finest food in Skipton.

The Canal Basin

The Leeds-Liverpool canal runs through the heart of Skipton and is one of its main tourist attractions. Boat trips are available at various times throughout the day from Pennine Cruisers and Skipton Boats. During the warmer months, we recommend taking a leisurely stroll along Skipton’s canal banks with your other half. You’ll find some great spots for those obligatory ‘couple selfies’ and you can end your romantic walk with traditional Fish & Chips from Bizzie Lizzies.

If you like Gin then you’ll LOVE Skipton’s V.SQ bar. The brainchild of a local mother and daughter, this great little bar opened in August 2015 and now serves around 170 different gins. They also offer an excellent selection of cocktails created by their talented mixologists. Spend an evening getting to know one another whilst sampling their impressive drinks menu.

The Rendezvous Hotel

Book a night at the Rendezvous Hotel, situated next to the Leeds-Liverpool canal and just a mile from the town centre. They have a leisure club onsite if you want to work up a sweat or go for a dip. The hotel is also home to Skipton Bar & Grill – an excellent canal-side restaurant. We recommend booking ‘The Best Room in the House’. It boasts plush velvet soft furnishings, a comfortable lounge area and a luxurious Jacuzzi so it really lives up to its name!

Afternoon Tea at Herriots

things to do in skipton - afternoon tea

Herriots Hotel is situated right across the road from Skipton rail station so it’s a great first stop once you get off the train. This contemporary hotel has been providing accommodation and dining to tourists for many years and has a great reputation. Their Rhubarb restaurant serves food at lunchtime and in the evening but we recommend booking their Afternoon Tea. Three tiers of dainty sandwiches, filled potato skins and decadent sweet treats are served in a beautifully decorated restaurant. What’s not to like?

Spa Day at The Devonshire Arms

The Devonshire Arms is an exceptional hotel and country retreat set in breathtakingly beautiful surroundings. Just up the road from Skipton on the Bolton Abbey Estate, The Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa is ideal for a day of relaxation and pampering. Book one of their many spa packages for a relaxed and romantic experience before dining in their award-winning restaurant or enjoying an al fresco lunch in a seriously Instagrammable location!

Skipton town hall theatre.

The local town hall puts on a variety of ticketed events such as family film screenings, heart-warming plays, seasonal craft fairs, gin festivals and fun tea dances. The town hall is located right at the top of the high street so you can pop into one of the local bars for a cheeky drink beforehand!

The Mart Theatre

You’d be hard pushed to find another venue like The Mart Theatre in Skipton. It’s the only theatre in the world that resides in a working cattle auction mart! Their annual programme of events is a diverse mix of theatre, comedy, music, family events and student performances. They’ve played host to some big names such as Michael McIntyre, Sarah Millican, Toploader and Beverley Craven. Check out their website to see what’s on!

Alexander’s

things to do in skipton

Alexander’s is situated at the top of Skipton High Street and is an excellent venue with stunning interiors and a variety of dining options. For a romantic meal for two, dine in their contemporary restaurant and tuck into some truly stunning dishes. Their seafood platter is exceptional and perfect for a special occasion.

On sunny afternoons, their terrace is perfect for sharing pizzas and prosecco with friends and their pretty parlour space is the ideal spot for an indulgent afternoon tea. During the winter months. Alexander’s offer a truly unique dining experience in the form of a pop-up alpine lodge. Heated, cosy and with a tasty menu of warming dishes, it’s a great way to kick off the festive period.

A few of the pubs in Skipton host a weekly quiz night. Some offer prizes in the form of cash whilst others reward the winner with alcohol. The Albion host their quiz night on a Thursday. It starts at 9pm and includes a number of themed rounds. The Cock and Bottle and The Fleece also host regular quiz nights.

Karaoke is a guilty pleasure for many of us. There’s nothing more enjoyable than a good old sing-a-long after one too many beers. The best karaoke night in Skipton takes place on the last Friday of each month at The Albion. The owners are excellent hosts and you’ll get a warm welcome from both the staff and their regular crooners. The Fleece also holds regular karaoke nights hosted by some of Skipton’s most colourful entertainers.

Best events in Skipton

Skipton’s Anglo Saxon name is “Sceap Tun” which translates, simply, to Sheep Town. The residents of Skipton embrace this title with their annual “Sheep Day.” It’s one of the most anticipated events, despite being one of the most unusual days of the year for Skipton! The famous Sheep Show takes place at regular intervals throughout the day, showcasing various breeds of sheep, sheep shearing demonstrations and even sheep dancing. The whole town gets behind the event and there’s plenty on offer, including various animal-focused attractions like a petting zoo and even birds of prey encounters. It’s an unmissable event if you’re looking for a truly unique thing to do when in Skipton

Skipton Artisan Market

skipton tourist attractions

Skipton’s Artisan Market takes place on Sundays and provides a unique little shopping experience in one of the prettiest parts of the town. The market sees a host of local crafters and producers take over the Canal basin for a fantastic, community lead event organised by some of Skipton Markets top traders. There’s always something different on offer and there are often local musicians for you to enjoy whilst you peruse the stalls at leisure.

Taking place at the Mart Theatre in September and heading into its fifth year, Yarn Dale is a fantastic exhibition of some of the best knitting, crochet, spinning, dyeing and felting talent in the region. It’s a two-day event that hosts over 180 talented exhibitors who are passionate about sharing all things woolly! The Auction Mart is a truly unique venue which is certainly an essential stop for anyone visiting the area, and Yarn Dale, along with Art in the Pen and Crafts in the Pen, is perhaps the most popular event held here throughout the year.

Skipton and Craven Rotaries annual Santa Fun Run

The Santa Fun Run has fast become one of the most anticipated days of the year. It’s a day when thousands of dedicated Skipton residents join together to run through the streets of Skipton dressed as Santa Claus. Truly a sight to behold, this event is held in the name of charity and is organised by the fantastic individuals at the Skipton and Craven Rotary club.

S kipton Charities Gala

Skipton’s annual gala has been the town’s most loved event for decades. The event kicks off with a colourful procession through the town centre, with community groups, schools and local charities all taking part. The main event is always at Aireville Park and the schedule includes the crowning of the Gala Queen, dog shows and more. They’ve had a number of celebrity guests over the years including the real Calendar Girls and some popular Coronation Street actors and actresses. There’s also a big family funfair which is open from Thursday evening until the end-of-event fireworks on Saturday night.

gateways festival skipton

In August 2021, Skipton hosted its very first music festival and it looks like the event will be returning in 2022. The fun-packed 3-day event took place in Aireville Park and in addition to a plethora of funfair rides, food vendors, bars and activities there were some excellent live acts. Tickets sold fast for attendance on Saturday and Sunday when bands such as Feeder, Toploader, Razorlight and The Artful Dodger took to the stage and families flocked to the park on the Friday for screenings of hit movies The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody. An excellent event that will surely get bigger and better each year!

Day Tripper: The Ultimate Way To Spend 24 Hours In Skipton

Day Tripper: The Ultimate Way To Spend 24 Hours In Skipton

While Skipton is often considered the ‘ gateway to the Yorkshire Dales ‘ – implying something far better on its doorstep – the charming market town is well worth the visit in itself.

Offering a dose of ‘hustle and bustle’ just a stone’s throw away from the sleepy Dales, the town has a little bit of everything – from tranquil waters and countryside walks, to lively bars and restaurants for fun nights out. Here’s our guide to the best things to do in Skipton.

Things to do in Skipton: by day

Treat your pooch at kibble bakery.

skipton tourist attractions

Skipton’s fantastic dog-friendly cafe is one of our favourite attractions in the town, catering more so to the pooches than the humans.

And while that is certainly true, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing for us to enjoy. Quite the opposite. There’s plenty of fantastic sweet treats and sandwich options for the hoomans to enjoy, with just as many (if not more) treats catered for our beloved doggy guests. Kibble Bakery, 44 Sheep St, Skipton, BD23 1HY.

Learn a bit of history at Skipton Castle

skipton tourist attractions

Skipton’s most famous attraction is an absolute must visit when in town. Over 900 years old but exceptionally well preserved, visitors can imagine what it was like to live in the Medieval masterpiece of a building – which has lived through civil wars and more.

From the banqueting hall to hidden cellars and viewing spots, there’s plenty to see and learn about at Skipton Castle.

Wind down at The Woolly Sheep Inn

skipton tourist attractions

One of our favourite little spots in Skipton, the Woolly Sheep Inn is a welcoming, well-decorated pub run by Yorkshire brewery Timothy Taylor’s, boasting plenty of nooks and crannies to retreat to, fantastic pub grub and an exceptional beer garden, too.

Hideaway with a gin in the back garden which is covered and heated on the cooler days and opened up on the sunnier days, or hibernate inside during the winter where you’ll be able to enjoy tons of delicious, traditional pub fare. The Woolly Sheep Inn, 38 Sheep St, Skipton, BD23 1HY.

Take in a bit of Yorkshire heritage at Bolton Abbey

skipton tourist attractions

A trip to Skipton wouldn’t be complete without a detour to the historic Bolton Abbey. Just minutes away by car, the stunning site is one of the area’s most popular attractions – and for good reason.

The preserved abbey is one of the most spectacular in the country, with tons of woodland and parkland to explore and, of course, the famous stepping stones to take on. We’d recommend sensible shoes for that one, however!

Shop local at Skipton Market

skipton tourist attractions

Taking place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, Skipton Market takes over the High Street – with tons of fantastic local traders to browse.

What makes Skipton Market so unique, however, is that traders bring their own stalls on market day mornings and find a spot to pitch up – with no fixed stalls left on the High Street afterwards.

Run by Skipton Castle in collaboration with the local council, there’s tons of stuff on sale – including live animals, which are sold off in the purpose built auction house.

This element of the market attracts tons of farmers every week – with both cattle and sheep sold on an almost daily basis.

Explore Yorkshire on a canal boat trip

skipton tourist attractions

The Leeds and Liverpool canal flows right through Skipton, not only providing scenic views, but also a great activity when visiting the town.

Jump on board one of the town’s resident canal boats and enjoy the gateway to the Dales in a whole new light, with fun, on-board luxuries to enjoy such as fish and chips, roast dinners and plenty of booze.

Some boats are available to hire out completely privately, too, meaning you and your pals can try your hand at sailing across the canal in your own time.

Try J. Stanforth’s beloved pork pies

skipton tourist attractions

Born in Skipton, Stanforth’s has become well loved far and wide for its delicious pies and pastries, with it’s pork pies, in particular, achieving local fame.

They’re so popular, in fact, that the butchers now offer a bespoke, personalised service, adding words and initials on top of the pies in pastry before baking. Hell, they even do pork pie wedding cakes!

In addition to their famous pork pies, visitors can enjoy sausage rolls, filled traditional pies and sweet bakes as well as locally sourced sausages, bacon, beef, lamb and pork. Stanforth’s, 9-11 Mill Bridge, Skipton, BD23 1NJ.

Have a potter around Craven Court

skipton tourist attractions

Packed full of independent retailers and larger, luxury jewellers and home stores, Craven Court is a stunning 16th-century arcade that visitors can potter around, with two floors full of shops to explore.

Local shops include Emma’s Apothecary, The Potting Shed, The Sweet Emporium and more, alongside larger chains such as Fatface, Joules and H. Samuel.

Things to do in Skipton: by night

Get cosy in a proper yorkshire pub.

skipton tourist attractions

If there’s one thing Skipton isn’t lacking in, it’s pubs. Proper pubs as well.

From the Woolly Sheep Inn to the proper local micropub Early Doors (friendly landlord included), there’s plenty a cosy, traditional boozer in Skipton.

We recommend warm and welcoming pubs such as the Woolly Sheep Inn, The Cock & Bottle, The Albion and the Yorkshire Rose.

 • Skipton Sound Bar

skipton tourist attractions

A unique bar where music lovers can kick back with a beer, Skipton Sound Bar is a record store-slash-laidback pub – with crate after crate of vinyl records and CDs, live music sessions and, of course, plenty of real ales, wines and gins.

The relaxed bar is great to visit day or night, with coffees available during the day if you don’t quite fancy getting on the booze train just yet. Skipton Sound Bar, 15 Swadford St, Skipton, BD23 1RD.

skipton tourist attractions

Fancy a gin? You’ll be pretty spoiled for choice at VSQ, a glam gin and champagne bar where guests can kick back with a gin of their choice (with tons of flavours on offer!), alongside champagnes, wines, craft beers and more.

If that wasn’t all lovely enough already, the bar also serves up fun G&T ‘trees’ to share with friends, which make for the perfect social media moment. VSQ, 1 Victoria St, Skipton, BD23 1JF.

Plaza Cinema

skipton tourist attractions

For chilled nights in Skipton, the Plaza Cinema showcases all the latest blockbuster hits, with room enough for 250 viewers to enjoy its scheduled screenings.

The historic cinema also boasts plenty of original features, with tons of beautiful features (including its grand balcony) nodding to its history that dates all the way back to 1912.

It’s safe to say, it’s not your average Odeon chain. Plaza Cinema, Sackville St, Skipton, BD23 2PB.

Cocktails at Alexander’s

skipton tourist attractions

Whether it’s a treat night you’re after, or just a refreshing cocktail with great surroundings, Alexander’s is the place.

A bar and bistro with a welcoming and luxurious terrace, Alexander’s is simply stunning inside out, with art deco interiors, show-stopping cocktails (with rose petals and even theatrical smoke coming from some of them!), alongside beautiful British dishes such as fish fritters with Yorkshire caviar, honey glazed duck breast and grill boards packed with confit chicken breast, pork ribeye, glazed duck breast and beef fillet. Alexander’s, 4-6 High St, Skipton, BD23 1JZ.

Our top bar recommendations:

 • The Mess Room
 • The Beer Engine
 • Devonshire Vaults
 • The Woolly Sheep Inn
 • The Cock & Bottle

Our top restaurant recommendations:

 • Elsworth Kitchen
 • Le Caveau Restaurant
 • Le Bistro Des Amis
 • Alexander’s Grand Café
 • Two Sisters

12 Best Things to do in Skipton, Yorkshire

Skipton is a beautiful market town located in North Yorkshire, England. Its immense culture, history and independent shops make it a great place for a short getaway.

Something that I really love about these small towns is the fact that you find everything in one place, generally in the town centre; however, you’ll also discover that Skipton is surrounded by other incredible attractions and places like the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Before visiting it, I asked myself, “What is there to do in Skipton?” As I had only heard of its castle before, and I didn’t see many activities or things to do on TripAdvisor and other websites.

Regardless, I decided to go on a day trip to Skipton, and I must admit it surprised me.

So, let’s dive into the best things to do in Skipton.

Things to do in Skipton town centre

1. visit skipton castle.

things to do in Skipton, Skipton Castle view

Skipton Castle is one of my favourite castles in North Yorkshire . The castle is well preserved and accessible as it’s just a footstep from the town centre.

Although you need to pay an entry fee, it’s completely worth it because the castle has many rooms to wander around, and it’s truly beautiful.

As you enter, you’ll see the main part of the castle, which takes you to a small patio. From there, you can start your tour anywhere, but I found it easier to walk from the left side to the right side of the castle.

You can explore the Banqueting Hall, the Kitchen, the Bedchamber and the Privy, and last but not least, you can climb from the Dungeon to the top floor of the Watch Tower.

Some rooms are pretty empty, but you can still imagine how life was inside, especially when you get to the kitchen. However, something that I recommend you do is to keep an eye on the windows if you love getting a view – you can see the castle woods as well as another perspective of the castle.

Not only is the castle a great place to explore, but to have some food too. You can stop by the cafe or enjoy your packed lunch in the green area next to St. John’s Chapel.

2. Walk on Skipton Castle Woods

Skipton riverside

Straight off the high street, Skipton Castle Woods is a great place to connect with nature and exercise.

There’s no right or wrong on where to start your walk, but depending on how difficult you want your walk to be, you must choose between River Valley Route (easy), Upper Paths Extension (medium) and Earl of Thanet Trail (difficult).

I love walking from the canal to Skipton Castle Woods as it’s a very relaxing and picturesque walk. But on every walk, you have the chance to spot wildlife – from squirrels climbing in the trees and little birds singing to deer.

In addition to this, you’ll find two pieces of natural sculpture – The Spirit of the Medieval Huntress and The Stalking Horse, which became very famous thanks to social media.

3. Explore Leeds and Liverpool Canal

Leeds Liverpool Canal in Skipton

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is one of the oldest canals in Northern England. As you can guess from the name, the canal connects the vibrant cities of Leeds and Liverpool. The channel is 127 miles and offers great activities like walking, boating, wildlife watching and much more.

One of its stops is Skipton! The canal area is relaxing and beautiful to explore, and you can do it in different ways – by foot, bike or boat. If you want a different experience, you must go on a boat trip.

These boat trips offer afternoon tea/fish and chips/roast dinner while you enjoy the canal views for two hours.

📍 Address: The Wharf Office, 3 Coach St, Skipton BD23 1LH

4. Go to Skipton Market

If you love supporting local and independent businesses, there’s no better place than Skipton Market. This outdoor market happens three days a week (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) in the town centre where stalls are set up along each side of the High Street.

Here you’ll find anything from different types of local cheese and fresh vegetables to beautiful handmade crafts and clothes.

Interestingly, this market has been operating since medieval times thanks to a Royal Charter from King John that granted consent to the lord of Skipton Castle to hold a fair in the High Street.

In the past, the market was mainly a place for trading animals, and this explains why the town is called Skipton (it means “Sheep Town”).

📍 Address: High St, Skipton BD23 1JX

5. Check out Craven Museum & Gallery

Skipton town hall

If you love museums or you want to do something in Skipton on a rainy day, you can check out Craven Museum and Gallery located in Skipton Town Hall.

The museum was founded in 1928 by local collectors, and as you can imagine, there are plenty of interesting objects inside.

In January 2018, the council was given a National Lottery grant to carry out the Stories & Treasures of Street & Dale project to redevelop the museum. Over these three years, the museum has been restructured and packed with over 6,000 objects!

📍 Address: High St, Skipton BD23 1AH

6. Shop at Craven Court Shopping Centre

Craven Court Shopping Centre, located just off the town centre, is a unique shopping centre. Before transforming into a shopping centre, this building was a beautiful 16th-century theatre.

The court has over 25 shops, from well-known brands to small quaint independent shops and cafes, to enjoy a light bite or a hot drink.

It’s a great place to buy something unique and different from high street retailers.

📍 Address: Craven Court Shopping Centre, High St, Skipton BD23 1DG

7. Visit High Corn Mill

High corn mill in Skipton

High Corn Mill is a hidden gem in Skipton because not many people don’t know about it. I almost missed it during my visit.

Set along the beautiful Leeds Liverpool canal, the mill is a historical building that has become an office complex and retail. Inside you can find incredible independent local shops and businesses.

📍 Address: Chapel Hill, Skipton, BD23 1NL

8. Experience Sheep Day

If you’re up for attending a traditional event, you must check out Sheep Day, Skipton’s annual celebration, which is held in late June. During this day, you can expect lots of sheep related activities – from sheep dancing to racing.

It’s a fantastic event for all ages, especially kids!

9. spend the day at bolton abbey.

a view of bolton abbey, skipton, north yorkshire

Not very far from Skipton, Bolton Abbey is the perfect day out in Yorkshire. The abbey is located in the middle of the beautiful countryside, where you can walk over 80 miles of footpaths.

The best thing to do is to explore and contemplate the Priory Church and its ruins near the stunning riverside.

However, there are plenty of outdoor activities for all ages; you can challenge yourself to walk through the stepping stones, take pictures of the fantastic wildlife, find the impressive Laund Oak over 600 years old, and much more.

📍 Address: Bolton Abbey, Skipton, BD23 6AL

10. Relax at Kilnsey Park

19 minutes drive from Skipton, inside the Yorkshire Dales, you’ll find Kilnsey Park. It’s ideal for a day trip as there are activities for all ages – fishing, visiting the friendly alpacas on the farm, riding through the hills and valleys or stopping by Café by the Lake to try their famous pink fish and chips.

Although you must pay different fees for each activity, it’s definitely worth visiting.

📍 Address: Kilnsey Park, Kilnsey, Skipton BD23 5PS

11. Visit Parcevall Hall Gardens

Parcevall Hall Gardens is a hidden gem at the heart of Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales and only a 25-minute drive from Skipton.

Inside the garden, there are plants from all over the world – including the Himalayas – and there’s nothing better than a walk in the woodlands and surroundings.

Although the gardens are open to all visitors, The Hall isn’t as it’s used by the Diocese of West Yorkshire and The Dales as a retreat house.

It’s also interesting to hear that Its idyllic location has become a popular spot for TV and film companies, so British BBC programmes like “ Escape to the Country ” have featured in Parcevall Hall Gardens.

📍 Address: Skyreholme, Skipton BD23 6DE

12. Discover the lovely village of Haworth

a house in haworth town centre

Haworth is a small but charming village which is very well-known for being home to the Bronte Parsonage Museum, which commemorates the Bronte Sisters: Charlotte, Emily and Anne, who were locals.

Apart from visiting this must-see museum, you’ll also want to check out Haworth’s Main Street, Central Park and St Michael and All Angel’s Church.

Visiting Haworth won’t take you more than half-day, so you can visit another nearby town too.

Where to eat in Skipton

The Three Sheep Tea House & Kitchen . This cute cafe is perfect for a delicious breakfast or lunch. Both times I visited it, I enjoyed the food, and the staff were friendly. I highly recommend their delicious cakes (especially the vanilla buttercream one) and their sandwiches.

Le Caveau . This bistro is one of the best in Skipton. Although food prices are more expensive than in other pubs or restaurants, it’s worth the money. They serve anything from scallops and lamb to vegetarian dishes. Their lunch and evening set menu has plenty of choices and works out cheaper.

Where to stay in Skipton

There are plenty of accommodations in Skipton to choose from; however, these are the best two places to stay near Skipton town centre.

The Woolly Sheep Inn

Located only 10 minutes from the historical Skipton Castle and a range of independent shops, The Woolly Sheep Inn is an excellent choice for anyone that wants to stay central and loves trying the local food.

The hotel offers 12 lovely rooms with all the amenities you need. Each room is equipped with comfortable bedding and pillows, an ensuite bathroom with complimentary toiletries, flat-screen TV, and coffee and tea facilities.

The food at The Wolly Sheep Inn is exceptional! They have a menu with mouth-watering dishes made with local produce. Here you’ll enjoy anything from traditional fish and chips to steak pie and delicious sticky toffee pudding.

The Bailey Bed and Breakfast

If you want a unique experience, The Bailey Bed and Breakfast is perfect for you.

It’s located just a short walk from Skipton town centre, and it’s surrounded by an ample green space that makes you feel like you’re in the countryside.

The rooms are beautifully decorated and equipped with comfortable bedding, a private bathroom, flat-screen TV, WiFi, and a tea and coffee maker. Some of the rooms come with a kitchenette.

The Shepherd’s Hut is one of my favourite accommodation options at The Bailey Bed and Breakfast. The hut is well equipped with all the essentials you need; it’s cosy and a perfect romantic escape for anyone that loves being immersed in nature with a touch of luxury!

Holy Trinity Church

The first church was built in the early 1100’s, possibly made of wood. It was near where the tower now stands. Another church was built about 1300 with help from the monks at Bolton Priory. It was extended further eastwards towards the end of the 1400’s, probably helped by a gift from Richard III. The tower was damaged during the Civil War, but it was restored in the 1650’s (along with some of the windows too) by Lady Anne Clifford from the castle next door. The tower suffered again in 1853 – this time from lightning.

There used to be galleries with seats to fit everyone in, and the pews used to be box pews, but the galleries came down in 1909 and the pews were replaced by the present oak ones with their little doors.

This guide introduces you to the best things to do in Skipton, Yorkshire.

Awesome things to do in Skipton including Skipton castle Yorkshire

About Skipton in North Yorkshire

Skipton is an ancient town – first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. Nestled into the verdant Yorkshire Dales that teem with sheep, it’s no surprise that this charming town prospered thanks to the wool trade. In fact, the old Anglo-Saxon name for Skipton was “ sceap tun “, or sheep town .

In 1090, Robert de Romilly (one of William the Conqueror ‘s trusted Norman barons) built a wooden motte and bailey fortress that became the town’s first castle. As it wasn’t very good at keeping attacks from Scotland at bay, the castle was strengthened with a stone keep in the 12th Century.

Skipton received a Royal Charter in 1204, allowing a weekly market trading in sheep and woollen goods. Nine centuries later, Skipton Market thrives on the High Street and visiting the quirky independent stalls is one of the best things to do in Skipton.

During the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century, Skipton became a vital mill town using the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to transport woollen fabrics to UK cities and ports.

When the woollen industry declined, Skipton switched its focus to tourism, exploiting its attractive historic architecture and proximity to the Yorkshire Dales.

15 Things to do in Skipton Yorkshire Today

1. visit skipton castle.

the imposing inner buildings at Skipton castle, within the outer curtain wall

One of England’s most complete and well-preserved medieval castles, Skipton Castle is also a private residence.

The imposing entrance to the castle is a huge gatehouse between two large drum towers. Once inside the castle, you are free to explore. the banqueting hall, kitchens and bedchambers used for more than three centuries by the influential Clifford family.

Pro Tip: There’s a dark, windowless dungeon to explore down a steep, worn stone staircase, plus a watchtower to climb to understand why the castle’s location was chosen.

Opening Times :

Daily from 10 am to 4 pm.

2. Meander along the Skipton Castle Woods Walk

Skipton Castle Walls viewed from the walkway through Skipton Castle Woods

You’ll find the charming Skipton Castle Woods tucked into the Eller Beck Valley , right behind Skipton Castle.

Once you enter the woods, it feels like you’re miles from anywhere rather than moments from a busy town. If you’re lucky, herons and kingfishers might make an appearance as you walk along the “ Kingfisher Highway ” between Eller Beck and the Springs Canal. The 2.5-mile circular riverside walk is rated as suitable for all skill levels and should take you about an hour.

Pro tip: The path can get muddy, especially during the winter. Remember your walking boots!

3. Rest a While in Holy Trinity Church

this photo shows Holy Trinity Church Skipton Yorkshire with a beautiful blue sky

As you leave the Skipton Castle Woods, poke your head into Holy Trinity Church at the top of the cobbled High Street. This impressive church dates back to the early 14th Century. While it was damaged during the English Civil War, the church was repaired in the 1650s by Lady Anne Clifford of Skipton Castle. It’s still used as Skipton’s parish church today.

Fun Fact: You can see a medieval fresco representing the hand of death – in the shop on the south wall!

There are well-tended gardens in front of the church, with welcome benches conveniently placed beneath the shade of ancient trees, making this a pleasant place to pause before exploring further. Alternatively, the church has a very welcoming cafe.

Pro Tip: You can see the ornate tombs of Lady Anne Clifford and her parents in Skipton Parish Church.

4. Browse the Market and the Boutique Shops

Moments away from the Holy Trinity Church, you’ll find the award-winning High Street market that takes place every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Discover an eclectic mix of independent shops and stalls selling clothes, homeware, food, and souvenirs.

Then there’s Skipton’s hidden gem. Craven Court is a Victorian-themed shopping arcade praised by Prince Charles for its architecture. You’ll find a selection of popular High Street names inside, plus more unusual shops selling everything from German woodcraft to silver jewellery. The beautifully painted ironwork and stunning glass roof make it a unique and enchanting shopping experience.

Beyond the High Street and Craven Court, there are myriad narrow side streets packed with more shopping treasures. Shopping is one of the best things to do in Skipton!

5. Cruise along the longest canal in the UK

leeds and liverpool canal skipton yorkshire

Once you’ve shopped ’til you drop, a leisurely boat trip on the Leeds and Liverpool canal is a great way to rest your feet and see more of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

Top Tip: Try a 2-hour afternoon tea cruise and watch the world glide by as you tuck into delicious cakes!

7. Let Off Steam in Aireville Park

Henry Allcock created Aireville Park in the 1830s as part of the Aireville Estate. If you’re travelling with children or dogs, there’s plenty of space for eager legs to run.

8. Stroll Along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Towpath

You can enjoy Skipton’s canal without a boat trip too. One of the best things to do is head out of the centre of town along the towpath. You can go in either direction towards Liverpool or towards Leeds.

There is plenty to see, from organised pleasure trips to working barges and colourful houseboats with their roofs covered in pots of flowers. It’s a paradise for photographers.

9. Check Out Freddie Trueman’s Statue

Freddie Trueman OBE (1931- 2006) was one of cricket’s greatest fast bowlers. “Fiery Fred” was a proud Yorkshireman who lived in the Skipton area for many years, so it’s fitting that there’s a bronze statue of this cricketing legend next to the Skipton canal. It’s a rather good bronze, showing Freddie in full flow, launching a ball towards an unknown opponent.

10. Enjoy Sheep Day

Skipton’s “Sheep Day” is a hotly anticipated annual event in early July that the whole town gets involved in! The Sheep Show takes place all day, showcasing different sheep breeds; plus, you can see sheep shearing demonstrations and sheep dancing too!!

There’s usually a petting zoo, birds of prey encounters, and more food than you can imagine. It’s a genuinely unique, unmissable event.

Best Things to Do in the Wider Skipton Area

If you’re visiting for more than one day, here are some lovely things to do in the local area:

11. Take a Trip on the Embsay and Bolton Railway

If you love heritage railways, the Embsay & Bolton Railway will be a real treat. The smells of a real steam railway and the puffing and hissing of the steam engine is absolutely intoxicating.

Treat yourself to a ride in the First Class saloons for Afternoon Tea, Fish & Chip Specials or the famous Curry Express !

12. Spend the Day Exploring Bolton Abbey

The ruined buildings of Bolton Abbey

A visit to nearby Bolton Abbey is one of the best things to do if you’re visiting Skipton, as it’s just 15 minutes by car from the town.

Bolton Abbey Estate and village take their names from the ruined 12th-century Augustinian monastery known as Bolton Priory . The community thrived for 400 years until the Abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries – ordered by Henry VIII.

Today, the atmospheric ruins, 30,000 acres of beautiful countryside and 80+ miles of footpaths offer a great place to walk and explore.

Managed by the Devonshire family since 1755, Bolton Abbey Estate is the Yorkshire seat (home) of the 12th Duke of Devonshire. It’s £10 a day to park your car at Bolton Abbey, but there are no further charges, and there’s plenty to see and do.

Discover exactly what to see and do at Bolton Abbey estate here .

13. Take a Gin Tour

Enjoy a gin tour and tasting experience at the rural Otterbeck Distillery – just 7 miles from the centre of Skipton. In a beautiful setting, you’ll be introduced to the still, talked through the distillation process, and have the opportunity to see and smell the wonderful botanicals used in the gin-making process. Then you get to taste the distinctive herbaceous Cotton gin.

14. Explore Lovely Villages Near Skipton

Grassington: The quaintest little stone village with the most fabulous Dickensian Christmas market.

Pateley Bridge: Home to the oldest sweet shop in England and one of the prettiest high streets in England.

Haworth : Home of the Bronte Sisters and quaint independent shops.

Hawes: A chocolate box village that is home to the Wensleydale cheese creamery (beloved of Wallace and Gromit)

15. Walk Lady Anne’s Way

The 100-mile Lady Anne’s Way trail runs from Skipton Castle, where Lady Anne Clifford was born, to Brougham Castle in Penrith, where she died.

If you’re reasonably fit, with a sense of adventure and love the countryside, you’ll love this beautiful, historic long-distance path.

The route passes through Wharfedale and Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales . You’ll see unspoilt villages and limestone pavements before reaching the remote and rugged fellside of Mallerstang to enter Cumbria and the romantic delights of the Eden Valley . The walk was initially planned as a six-day hike, but there’s now a more leisurely nine-day alternative too.

3 Tips For Visiting Skipton

 • Take a jacket : This is North Yorkshire – even on the warmest days, it’s best to have a jacket with you. Check out: What to pack for a trip to Yorkshire
 • Wear comfortable walking shoes : There’s lots of walking to be done and the high street is cobbled/
 • Pack a reusable shopping tote bag for any goodies you pick up in Skipton’s lovely shops!

How to Get to Skipton

By Train : Skipton has its own train station and is well connected. Travel time from London stations is from 3 1/2 hours, while trips from Manchester Airport take about 2 1/2 hours, and trains to/from Leeds take from 35 minutes.

By Car: There are several places to park in Skipton. Find full information here .

Pro Tip : If you’re happy to walk for a few minutes (there’s a steep hill), head for the Bailey long stay car park (Satnav BD23 1UA) where all-day parking is £4.50, after 2 pm £2.50. This is the best (and cheapest) place to park if you’re visiting Skipton Castle.

Where to eat in Skipton

The Cake’ole : This little cafe in the Craven Court Shopping Centre has delicious, massive homemade cakes! Try not to drool over the beautifully decorated three-tier cakes on the display table. If you’re visiting with friends, the sharing platter is the best way to try several different cakes – in great company!

Herriots Hotel : This contemporary hotel has a strong reputation, and it’s conveniently located opposite Skipton rail station. While lunch and dinner are lovely in the Rhubarb restaurant, afternoon tea here is excellent and convenient if you’re only visiting Skipton for the day. Enjoy exploring the town, relax over a delicious afternoon tea and then hop straight onto the train!

The Craven Heifer : If you’re in Skipton on a Sunday, this is THE place to go for a sumptuous (er – huge) Sunday roast with all the trimmings!

Here are my personal recommendations for some of the best things to do in Skipton, a picture-perfect market town in North Yorkshire (UK). Known for being the ‘gateway’ to the Yorkshire Dales, Skipton is dead popular with tourists and locals alike, and it’s not hard to see why. Visitors are drawn in by the town’s beautiful position on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, its imposing 900-year old castle, and its plethora of cute cobbled streets. Oh and then there are all the brilliant places to eat and drink, which Skipton has more than its fair share of. If you enjoy a beer and a pub meal or a good cuppa and a scone, you’re in the right place.

Skipton is always topping polls of the best places to live in the UK. But if you’re not quite poised to up sticks and move there, then it also makes a lovely place for a day trip. It’s surrounded by the stunning Yorkshire Dales, so you could combine an afternoon in town with a morning walk out in the hills. Or you could extend your time into a weekend break to enable more exploring (and eating) in the surrounding countryside and towns.

If this all sounds up your proverbial street, read on for my ideas for things to do in Skipton…

Things to do in Skipton, North Yorkshire

1. visit the fairytale skipton castle.

Things to do in Skipton, North Yorkshire | PACK THE SUITCASES

I have to begin with this, the focal point of the town. When you arrive, you can’t miss the massive castle at the top of Skipton High Street, with its imposing gatehouse looming over the high street.

Skipton Castle is known for being one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the country. No crumbling ruins here. It’s really impressively intact, to the point you almost feel like it can’t be real. It’s a bit like being on a period drama filming set or stepping into a Philippa Gregory novel. In fact, I’ve not been to another castle in the UK that feels so ‘real’ as you walk around. Edinburgh Castle is a good’un but it has significantly more tourists to contend with so you don’t get the same atmosphere.

When you visit, you’ll learn that Skipton Castle was built in 1090 by a Norman baron and later came into the Clifford family’s possession. The Clifford family are a big deal in Skipton and crop up again and again in the town’s history. Lady Anne Clifford planted a yew tree in the castle’s courtyard in 1659. And she obviously had a good compost as the tree is still there.

Even if you’re not a history buff, it’s worth calling into Skipton Castle have a look round and imagine yourself as a medieval queen strutting around the banqueting hall. You can easily spend an hour there doing the self-guided tour. Check the official website for opening times and ticket details.

2. Sample a local craft beer (or three)

skipton tourist attractions

I always enjoy trying local beers wherever I go. Skipton is no exception as Yorkshire has so many independent breweries offering up something for everyone, from hoppy IPAs to traditional cask. And if you want to have a natter with some locals, who will most likely be more than willing to share their tips for where to go in Skipton, a pub or bar is the place to do that.

Here are a few beery delights around Skipton that I like:

 • The Beer Engine – A friendly, tiny micropub that does local craft beer. Full of chatty locals and a generally nice atmosphere.
 • The Mess Room – Another nice micropub with a good selection of craft beer, cask and keg. It also has a small beer garden, which is perfect if you’re lucky enough to visit on a sunny day.
 • Early Doors – Yet another micropub (Skipton obviously specialises in them!) with local beers to try in a no-frills but warm and friendly setting.
 • The Narrow Boat – More of a traditional pub than the rest in this little list, this also does food but you’ll be fine for just a drink. A good selection of beer and cosy vibes.

3. Get yourself a bargain at Skipton Market – one of the most unique things to do in Skipton

skipton tourist attractions

One of the best things to do in Skipton is to visit the popular outdoor market, do a bit of browsing and take in the bustling atmosphere.

Skipton Market is unusual because it doesn’t have fixed stalls. Traders have to wake up early and nab a spot wherever they can find one. This sounds stressful to me, but it’s what makes the market unique. The stalls line both sides of the High Street along a special cobbled strip between the pavement and the road, known as ‘the setts’.

It’s no surprise that the market has literally been ingrained in the High Street through the setts: it’s been going since medieval times. A royal charter from King John granted consent to the ‘Lord of the Honour’ of Skipton Castle to hold a ‘fair’ on the High Street four days a week. This consent still stands through the current owner of Skipton Castle, although you’ll be pleased to hear that the market now sells a bit more than mead and sheep. You’ll find different stalls on different days, but expect to see plenty of local food, arts and crafts, clothes and plants.

It’s normally on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday between 10am and 4pm, but check the official website just in case.

4. Treat yourself in Skipton’s independent local shops

skipton tourist attractions

As well as the market, Skipton also has some gorgeous independent shops where you can pick up some wee treasures for your friends and family yourself. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you won’t be surprised to hear that mooching around the shops is one of my favourite things to do in Skipton and I rarely come home empty-handed.

There are nice shops on the High Street and tucked away down narrow side streets and alleys too, so it’s worth doing a little bit of research before your visit so you don’t miss any gems.

Here are a few Skipton shops I really like:

 • Lighthouse Lane – This has to be my favourite: a quirky gift shop selling homewares, art, greeting cards, jewellery, handmade soaps, and mugs/coasters with amusing Yorkshire phrases on them. It’s all nicely curated and I always find something I ‘need’. The earring selection is excellent, and I’m wearing a pair I bought on my last visit as I type this.
 • Kibble Bakery – If you have a pooch, pop into here for some treats for them as well as for yourself. It’s a special doggy café mainly (as in, the menu is great for dogs as well as humans) but you can also buy treats and doggy accessories in their little shop area.
 • Sarsaparilla Sweet Shop – It’s rare to find a proper traditional sweet shop that sells by the quarter, scooping sweets out of retro glass jars. This one has been going since the 1920s and does all the traditional favourites like rhubarb and custard, lemon sherbert and humbugs. It also serves local ice cream and American sweets that you can’t readily find in normal shops.

5. Visit the Craven Museum

This is a small and eclectic museum focusing on the local area’s social history, archaeology and art. It’s a good shout for something to do on a rainy day and you can easily spend an hour taking in its treasures, from retro clothing to fossils. Keep an eye out for the paintings of amusingly square cows. Were they really that shape once…?!

The Craven Museum is also home to one of Shakespeare’s first folios, which is one of only four of his first folios that you can see in the whole world. How cool is that? It’s incredible that this is in Skipton and hasn’t been snaffled up by a museum in London or something. If you’re a Shakespeare buff or just a literature fan in general, what a thing to say you’ve seen.

Check the official website for opening times.

6. Try the amazing menu at Two Sisters Bar and Kitchen

skipton tourist attractions

There are so many good places to eat in Skipton that I’m not even going to attempt to go into too much detail on cafés and restaurants in this post. But I have to mention the fabulous Two Sisters Bar and Kitchen , which not only does gorgeous wood-fired pizzas but also has some brilliant veggie and vegan options. You can probably tell from the photo above that this makes me very happy.

Oh and it does a gorgeous Aperol spritz, which I have to order every time. It’s the law.

If you sit outside on a sunny evening, the atmosphere is great and there are plenty of fairy lights going on. What more could you ask for?

7. Check out the waterwheel at High Corn Mill

Located on the canal, this beautiful old mill is now mainly used for offices, but the historic waterwheel is still there. It’s free to get in and although you only need a brief visit, it is worth popping up to see.

The mill dates back to 1310 so is a real slice of Skipton history, and like the castle was owned by the Clifford family. In recent years, the waterwheel has been restored. There’s a little display on its history and it still works, although it doesn’t ground any corn in the mill these days. You can operate it with a handle yourself and the water starts gushing through! So that’s quite entertaining. You may get a wet sleeve. Consider yourself warned.

8. Do a boat trip on the canal in true Rosie & Jim style

skipton tourist attractions

I feel like the Rosie & Jim reference above may be lost on my blog readers from around the world. But hopefully my British readers will appreciate it. Who was driving their barge anyway, the duck or the random man?

Anyway, getting back to the subject in hand, the Leeds-Liverpool Canal runs through the centre of Skipton. This is the longest canal in the UK (at 127 miles, fact fans). Originally used to transport goods around the north, it’s now mainly used for leisure. And what could be better than bimbling along on a boat, passing the occasional duck, and enjoying the lush Yorkshire countryside rolling by? Doing that while tucking into some afternoon tea? Well, that’s also an option. A canal boat trip is definitely one of the best things to do in Skipton, especially on a nice day, and some scones will be the cherry on the proverbial cake..

Skipton Boat Trips organises different boat trip options like short guided tours, fine-dining experiences, and the aforementioned afternoon tea cruise. There’s even a roast dinner one, of course, which features plenty of Yorkshire pudding.

9. Check out some local art

Wherever I travel to around the world, I try to find somewhere to see some local art. In Skipton, you’ll find plenty of this at the impressive Mill Bridge Gallery, which prides itself on showcasing the talent of local artists from Skipton and Yorkshire more widely.

The gallery building itself is from the 17th century so full of beams and proper character. This makes a nice backdrop for the eclectic collection of photography, sculptures and art. There are two floors of art inside plus a pretty canal-side garden, which is full of interesting sculptures.

Oh and they do a feature on a different artist’s work that changes regularly so even if you’ve been before, it’s worth popping back again. Check their official website for opening times.

10. Have a chippy tea – one of the best things to do in Skipton for food lovers

skipton tourist attractions

Skipton has more than its fair share of decent fish and chip shops. In fact, having a day out in Skipton and not having a chippy tea is like visiting Rome and not having a pizza. Criminal.

I’m sure everyone who visits or lives there has their own personal favourite chippy in Skipton. Mine is definitely Bizzie Lizzie’s , which is ideally located by the canal. You’ll spot the queue of locals and tourists outside from a mile off.

The mushy peas are a solid 10/10.

11. Go for a walk in Skipton Castle Woods

Seeing as you’ll inevitably consume your own bodyweight in food and drink while in Skipton, walking it off while exploring some ancient woodland is a must-do. This is one of the nicest things to do in Skipton if you have a doggy friend with you and they’ll love splashing in the water and bounding through mud, sniffing lots of exciting smells.

Skipton Castle Woods are in a valley next to the castle, so dead handy to get to from the town centre. There are upper and lower paths that go just over two miles and you can pick from three mapped walking routes (yellow – easy, blue – moderate, or red – hard). They’re all quite doable though. Even the more strenuous ‘red’ route only takes about two hours.

There are plenty of streams through the woods, so keep your beadiest of eyes out for herons and kingfishers. They even have a ‘Kingfisher highway’ between the Springs Canal and Eller Beck, which is apparently the best place to spot them. So far I’ve been unsuccessful but we live in hope. The woods are also a great place for photographers. In spring, there’s a rather Insta-worthy carpet of bluebells in the woods, as well as loads of lovely wild garlic.

And of course, a walk through the woods means you’ve earned a drink in one of Skipton’s pubs afterwards.

12. Enjoy the shops and eateries in Craven Court

skipton tourist attractions

I’ve already mentioned Skipton’s independent shops but I thought I’d also mentioned its very quaint shopping centre, Craven Court . It’s a Victorian-style arcade very reminiscent of Barton Arcade in Southport , with a beautiful old wrought-iron staircase and a similar olde-worlde look and feel.

If it’s chucking it down, it’s worth ducking in here to stay dry and peruse some of the shops and eateries inside. My top tips are the Cake ‘ole , a very quirky café specialising in equally quirky cakes, and Strange Games , which sells a good selection of board games (including my favourite, Ticket to Ride, the best board game of all time).

13. Treat yourself to an evening meal at Phoebe’s

Sadly I don’t have any decent photos of the food here (the perils of always forgetting to shoot pictures before we start eating – this is why I’m a travel blogger, not a food blogger!). But I recommend it to anyone I know visiting Skipton so I have to include it here. Phoebe’s (formerly Elsworth Kitchen) is a gorgeous independent restaurant that does a locally sourced and seasonal menu. It’s won awards and everything.

This is a nice choice for your evening meal when in Skipton as it feels a bit more special than your average restaurant or pub (and you’re on your hols, after all). But they also do a good brunch (with an excellent vegan full English, too).

Given how popular it is, it’s best to book if you want to eat there, especially on a weekend.

14. Take some pretty photographs along the canal

skipton tourist attractions

One of the best things to do in Skipton is to just wander along the canal towpath, take in the scenery and put your photography skills to the test. It’s what Rosie and Jim would have wanted.

You can head towards Leeds or Liverpool, but either way you’ll spot lots of water birds (including cute fluffy ducklings and baby moorhens in spring). Obviously there are loads of brightly coloured boats too, with gorgeous flowerpots overflowing on their rooftops. A photographer’s dream.

And while you’re strolling the towpath, you might also be lucky enough to see people who’ve hired a boat for the day and can’t quite fathom how to do a lock so are just screaming at each other. Always entertaining.

15. Pop into Holy Trinity Church

skipton tourist attractions

While the castle is undoubtedly the focal point in Skipton, you’ll also spot this beautiful church next to it. It’s worth popping into Holy Trinity to have a look at its small but pretty gardens and to admire its big stained-glass windows.

The church is obviously a very old building, with some parts dating back to the 1300s (according to a leaflet inside!). During the Civil War, it was damaged by cannon fire. The aforementioned Lady Anne Clifford (she of planting a tree in the castle courtyard fame) coughed up for the repairs herself in 1655.

There’s also a café and a gift shop in the church, and sometimes they have small exhibitions about local history or art.

Things to do in Skipton, North Yorkshire: out of town

If you have a car and want to explore the outside the town centre, here are some things to do in Skipton’s nearby areas.

16. Parcevall Hall Gardens

About half an hour away from Skipton by car, Parcevall Hall Gardens are worth a visit. The hall itself isn’t open to the public but it’s all about the gardens anyway so that’s fine. They’ve even been shown on Gardener’s World .

There are 24 acres of them so it’s easy to spend an hour or so here. As well as formal gardens, there’s some woodland and amazing views across the Yorkshire countryside as you’re quite high up there. In summer, the garden is a total dream and bursting with colour, but even off-season it’s a pretty and peaceful spot.

There’s a tea room on site, too. Check opening times on the official website for that and the gardens7

17. Get the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and visit Bolton Abbey Estate

Everything on my blog always seems to come back to trains at some point. One of the nicest things to do in Skipton is to go on the old steam locomotive all the way to the lovely Bolton Abbey Estate.

Embsay station, where the journey starts, is less than a 10-minute drive from the centre of Skipton. From here, one of the two steam trains will take you through the gorgeous Yorkshire Dales on a short but sweet journey to Bolton Abbey station. Once you’re there, head into Bolton Abbey Estate itself. You can walk through the grounds for a good couple of hours and see the picturesque ruined priory.

A bit like the canal boats, the railway does themed journeys and afternoon tea. Have a look at the official website for running times and what’s on. At the time of writing, it’s £14 for a first-class ticket, which of course gets you a snazzier carriage.

Things to do in Skipton, North Yorkshire – useful information for your trip

Where to stay in skipton.

There are loads of lovely options for where to stay in Skipton. I’ve listed a few that I recommend below. All prices are correct at the time of writing.

 • The Bailey B&B – At about £90 a night, you can’t go wrong with this little boutique B&B. It’s very central and the rooms are stunning. They also have a shepherd’s hut you can stay in. If you’ve never stayed in one of these, have a go – it’s SO cosy.
 • Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa – If you want to splash out and treat yourself, this gorgeous spa hotel at Bolton Abbey is about £300 a night. A nice one for a special occasion.
 • Dalesgate Lodge – Another boutique B&B, this is about £85 a night and has very pretty rooms. Again, it’s well located for the town.

How to get to (and around) Skipton

Skipton is well connected by rail, so there’s no need to drive if you fancy getting the train. It’s about a 40-minute journey from Leeds station. Then Skipton station is an easy stroll away from the town centre once you’re there.

It’s all very walkable within Skipton itself as it’s only a small place. If you want to do some of the things I’ve recommended just outside the town, you’re best off with a car or getting a taxi as the local buses to those places can be impossible or quite infrequent.

When to go to Skipton

For the best atmosphere, make sure you visit on a market day – Fridays are especially bustling. Skipton can get quite busy in summer, so try to avoid school holiday time. Spring is a great time of year to plan a day out or weekend away in Skipton. The woods will be full of wildflowers and you’re likely to get decent weather but without the crowds. It’s also nice in the lead-up to Christmas, when you can cosy up in a pub and peruse the shops and market for presents.

Thank you! Hope you manage to get there this year.

Lovely article, very helpful 🙂

I love your article, so helpful, I am heading towards Skipton for Easter! Your writing is so pleasant to read, and yes the best afternoons to be had are definitely at a farm shop! I write a food blog myself (shootthecheese.com) although not a blog of your calibre Its great to see others bloggers out there and read their content 🙂

Hi Vicki what a lovely comment. Thank you! Keep up the food blogging 🙂

We live close to Skipton and visit a lot, but didn’t know some of the places so thankyou. For visitors, Skipton is also (locally) famous for one or more of its pork pies, our personal favourite is Stanforth Butchers. Also open on Sunday. Highly recommended, people normally eat hot/warm from the shop. It’s near the Castle pub and canal bridge

18 Tourist Attractions in the US You Won’t Feel Bad Skipping

Posted: May 15, 2024 | Last updated: May 15, 2024

You’d think standing in four states at once would be pretty cool. Well, once you get to this desolate attraction, you’ll realize it’s pretty much just that—a spot to stand. Most Americans prefer their geography a bit more exciting.

Are you planning a trip across the United States? While there are so many places to see and things to do, there are also plenty of things that aren’t worth your time or money. In this article, we’re sharing 18 of the most overrated tourist attractions that you should skip to avoid disappointment.

The entertainment industry in America is well known by many, especially the world of Hollywood’s glitz and glamor, which is at the heart of Los Angeles. The city is filled with mesmerizing experiences for anyone. You can immerse yourself in the thrill of strolling along the Hollywood Walk of Fame and experiencing various tours of renowned film studios, and if you’re lucky, you may bump into some of the celebrities.

Hollywood Walk of Fame, Los Angeles

If this is on your bucket list of places to visit, cross it off right now. It’s really not all it’s made out to be—typically crowded with tourists and street vendors, and far less glamorous than you’d expect. Many visitors also find the area surprisingly dirty and not that safe, particularly at night.

New York is a fantastic city to visit, with many more interesting things to see and do than Times Square. It may be impressive at first glance, but it’s overcrowded with tourists and street performers, which can feel overwhelming. It can get really noisy, and most shops and restaurants nearby are overpriced.

Times Square, New York

New York is a fantastic city to visit, with many more interesting things to see and do than Times Square. It may be impressive at first glance, but it’s overcrowded with tourists and street performers, which can feel overwhelming. It can get really noisy, and most shops and restaurants nearby are overpriced.

The Liberty Bell, a symbol of American independence, actually cracked the first time it was rung. The bell’s current state, with its famous crack, is a result of an attempt to fix the original flaw.

The Liberty Bell, Philadelphia

As shared by the National Park Service , “The State House bell, now known as the Liberty Bell, rang in the tower of the Pennsylvania State House.” While the historical significance is interesting to some, you’ll likely find a visit underwhelming. The bell is smaller than expected and often overcrowded, meaning visitors are lucky to get a brief glance and a photo.

We’re going to be real with you—this is basically just a rock in some sand. If you think it’s anything more, you’re going to end up disappointed. Since this is a popular spot for school trips, you might also end up being part of a crowded visit if you go, making it even less enjoyable. We vote you skip this one!

Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts

We’re going to be real with you—this is basically just a rock in some sand. If you think it’s anything more, you’re going to end up disappointed. Since this is a popular spot for school trips, you might also end up being part of a crowded visit if you go, making it even less enjoyable. We vote you skip this one!

Sites across the U.S. dating back centuries risk falling into disrepair and demolition, and new developments are being built over them. From gas stations to churches and caves, efforts are underway to protect these historic sites and preserve their legacy. Here are 17 sites at risk of disappearing and the efforts being taken to save them.

Bourbon Street, New Orleans

Famous for its nightlife, Bourbon Street does have a pretty cool vibe but can be excessively noisy and crowded. If you’re not heavily into the party-drinking atmosphere, you might find it over-the-top and rowdy. Not to mention, it can get pretty dirty.

This famous street is cool for a second but we don’t believe it’s worth the trip. The tight hairpin turns are unique, that’s for sure, but the area is often congested with cars. The experience of driving down it can be either quick and unremarkable or extremely slow and boring due to traffic.

Lombard Street, San Francisco

This famous street is cool for a second but we don’t believe it’s worth the trip. The tight hairpin turns are unique, that’s for sure, but the area is often congested with cars. The experience of driving down it can be either quick and unremarkable or extremely slow and boring due to traffic.

Las Vegas’s isolated desert location makes it less accessible to wandering zombies and simpler to defend against approaching hordes. The city’s tourist infrastructure could be repurposed for survivors, and its self-contained water system, using deep aquifer wells, would ensure a reliable drinking water supply.

Las Vegas Strip, Nevada

Travel Weekly says that “40.8 million people visited Las Vegas in 2023, a 5.2% increase over 2022.” The area, including the strip, gets extremely crowded and can feel superficial with its replicated global landmarks. In terms of dining, entertainment, and accommodation, it’s also going to cost you a pretty penny if you decide to visit. It’s definitely not for everyone!

The Empire State Building was completed “in 1931 and was the tallest building in the world until 1971,” as per Britannica. It features observatories on the 86th and 102nd floors, providing panoramic views of New York City, and is an Art Deco masterpiece—a symbol of American industrial success.

Empire State Building, New York

This may be a controversial take but we don’t think the Empire State Building is a must-visit in New York. It’s basically a long wait for a view that’s comparable to that of other tall buildings in the city. If it weren’t for the high entrance fees, we might consider it worth the trip—but considering this and the crowds, don’t feel bad about skipping it.

If you’re into amusement parks and aquariums, the Santa Monica Pier is the place to be. There are also a variety of restaurants and dining options to choose from that capture the true essence of California’s coastline.

Santa Monica Pier, California

Santa Monica Pier isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially in the summer when it gets extremely crowded. Ask previous visitors and you might just be told that the pier is run-down and the food options are mediocre. The pier’s attractions are also seen as overpriced and not very unique.

Four Corners Monument

This is the only spot in the U.S. where four states intersect, which in itself is pretty cool, but the actual site is underwhelming. It’s located in quite a remote area, making it a long trip for a quick visit. Aside from standing in the spot and snapping a pic, there isn’t much else to see or do here.

San Francisco has this undeniable charm. Despite its issues, the beauty of the city is unmistakable. It’s the kind of city that feels romantic. Think about the diverse neighborhoods – the burbs, the wharf, the hills. And the Bay! It’s all packed into a few miles, but each part feels like a world of its own.

Alcatraz Island, San Francisco

“From 1934 to 1963 it served as a federal prison for some of the most dangerous civilian prisoners,” as per Britannica . This is largely where the fascination with visiting comes from, but while historic, the tours here can feel rushed due to the high volume of visitors and supposedly aren’t that enjoyable.

If you’re planning to travel or vacation this year, then chances are you’re going to want to know about tourist traps that could cost you a lot of money or potentially even scam you. Here are 19 tourist traps that are total rip-offs.

Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco

This place is often described as a tourist trap, filled with pricey restaurants and shops. It’s now crowded and commercialized, has lost much of its local charm, and definitely isn’t a must-visit in the city. Better seafood can be found in less crowded areas nearby. Give it a miss!

Most countries throughout the world are continuing to grow in population, and America is no exception. However, this isn’t true for all parts of the nation. We’ve compiled 17 states in a state of decline.

The Bean (Cloud Gate), Chicago

Aside from a cool photo, you’re not going to get much out of a visit to “The Bean” in Chicago, so don’t feel bad about skipping it. There’s no interactive value, it’s overcrowded, and you may not even be able to get a photo without other tourists in the background.

It may be known for its quirky advertising, but the attraction itself can largely be considered a tourist trap. Many of the items for sale in the store are tacky souvenirs rather than the special, unique finds most people are looking for. When you combine this with the fact that the store is quite remote, it’s not a very attractive visit.

Wall Drug Store, South Dakota

It may be known for its quirky advertising, but the attraction itself can largely be considered a tourist trap. Many of the items for sale in the store are tacky souvenirs rather than the special, unique finds most people are looking for. When you combine this with the fact that the store is quite remote, it’s not a very attractive visit.

According to Go Hawaii, “Located on the south shore of Honolulu, the world-famous neighborhood of Waikīkī was once a playground for Hawaiian royalty.” Unfortunately, it’s often extremely crowded, which can detract from the area’s natural beauty. It’s very commercialized and surrounded by high-rise hotels and shops. There are far more beautiful sights to see on the island!

Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

According to Go Hawaii , “Located on the south shore of Honolulu, the world-famous neighborhood of Waikīkī was once a playground for Hawaiian royalty.” Unfortunately, it’s often extremely crowded, which can detract from the area’s natural beauty. It’s very commercialized and surrounded by high-rise hotels and shops. There are far more beautiful sights to see on the island!

Head to Mount Rushmore to view the heads of four previous American presidents that have been carved into stone. You can also learn about the history and significance of this national memorial. Once you’ve spent the morning learning about the carved statues, you can wander through the surrounding Black Hills.

Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore, for many people, is said to be smaller than expected, and viewing areas can be crowded. Besides viewing the sculpture, there’s not much to do here and it’s a considerable distance from other attractions. If you’re not in the area for long, we suggest skipping it.

Unless you’re a huge fan of Elvis, the high entrance fees to visit Graceland may not be worth it to you. Unfortunately, the area around Graceland isn’t very well-maintained either, which detracts from the overall experience. It can also get pretty crowded.

Graceland, Tennessee

Unless you’re a huge fan of Elvis, the high entrance fees to visit Graceland may not be worth it to you. Unfortunately, the area around Graceland isn’t very well-maintained either, which detracts from the overall experience. It can also get pretty crowded.

There’s a high pet population in Seattle with extensive pet ownership. Seattle even has dog-friendly water activities for you and your pet to take part in. For example, you could spend an afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding with your dog. There are also many dog parks and hotels you can stay at that are dog friendly.

The Space Needle, Seattle

Despite its iconic status, some visitors find the Space Needle to be overpriced for the views it offers. The observation deck can be extremely crowded, especially during peak tourist season, and it’s said that similar (or better) views of Seattle can be had from other less expensive locations, like Kerry Park.
