Black lines or No traffic flow lines could indicate a closed road, but in most cases it means that either there is not enough vehicle flow to register or traffic isn't monitored. Also, If you do not see traffic flow, you can zoom in closer to reveal localized data. If you are unable to pan the map, press here (to focus off of the map) and try again.

Track travel, storm conditions as winter blast barrels toward Minnesota

A school bus stops at a stop sign

Another winter storm is heading for the Upper Midwest , poised to bring snow, wind and possibly blizzard conditions to much of Minnesota later this week along with bitterly cold temperatures — just in time to mess with holiday travel plans.

The National Weather Service said travel across Minnesota later this week could be “impossible and life-threatening” as the storm is forecast to drop more than 6 inches of snow in some locations Wednesday into Thursday, followed by winds gusting in excess of 50 mph that will create dangerous wind chills and possibly whiteout conditions Thursday and Friday.

Here’s how to keep tabs on forecasts, travel conditions and flight updates over the next few days.

Minnesota state senator arrested on suspicion of burglary

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A state senator and former broadcast meteorologist was arrested on suspicion of burglary early Monday in the northwestern Minnesota city of Detroit Lakes, police said.

Democratic Sen. Nicole Mitchell, 49, of Woodbury, was being held in the Becker County Jail on suspicion of first-degree burglary. Formal charges were still pending Monday afternoon, Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd said.

Mitchell did not immediately return a call left on the jail’s voicemail system for inmates. It’s not clear if she has an attorney who could comment on her behalf. The police chief said he didn’t know of one.

Mitchell was arrested while the Senate is on its Passover break. Her arrest comes at an awkward time for Senate Democrats, who hold just a one-seat majority with four weeks left in the legislative session. Her absence would make it difficult to pass any legislation that lacks bipartisan support.

Mitchell worked as a meteorologist with the U.S. military and for KSTP-TV and Minnesota Public Radio before she was elected to the Senate in 2022 from a suburban St. Paul district. She still serves as lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard, commanding a weather unit, her official profile says. She worked for The Weather Channel earlier in her career, her profile says.

Dispatchers received a 911 call at 4:45 a.m. from a homeowner about “an active burglary in process at her residence,” Todd said in an interview. Officers searched the home and arrested Mitchell, Todd said.

The police chief said he could provide few other details because the case was still under investigation. He said he was waiting to hear back from the county attorney’s office, and that a complaint detailing the allegations might not get filed until Tuesday.

Becker County Attorney Brian McDonald did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the case.

Public records and an obituary posted by a Detroit Lakes funeral home show that Mitchell’s father, who died last month, and stepmother lived on the same block of the same road in Detroit Lakes as where the senator was arrested. The stepmother did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Mitchell’s arrest took Senate leaders by surprise. The Senate Democratic Caucus said in a statement that it’s “aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information.”

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mark Johnson, of East Grand Forks, said he was shocked but knew very few details.

“The public expects Legislators to meet a high standard of conduct,” Johnson said in a statement. “As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature.”

Timberwolves playoff run may help revive foot traffic in downtown Minneapolis

By Jeff Wagner , Adam Duxter

Updated on: April 20, 2024 / 1:34 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS — Excitement is brewing in downtown Minneapolis as the Timberwolves kick off their playoff run against the Phoenix Suns this weekend, with tipoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Target Center.

For those who couldn't get tickets, all is not lost. There are a number of spots in the Twin Cities that will have fans feeling like they're at the real deal, including Falling Knife Brewing Co.

"We created a bar that we wanted to hang out at and part of that was being a Timberwolves bar," founder Dan Herman said, though the dream had a rocky start. "We opened in October of 2019, so it wasn't great for the first couple years for us to be able to build this community."

But through dedicated watch parties and a partnership with a Timberwolves podcaster, they can now bask in the chance to host a huge playoff watch party complete with three projectors and several TVs.

"For playoff games, we actually bring out a big giant TV trailer that we throw out on the patio," Herman said. "It's actually my birthday weekend, so we're getting crazy for the Wolves, for the playoffs. Hopefully we get a win for my birthday."

Tom's Watch Bar, located just a block away from Target Center, is trying to create an arena-like atmosphere, with DJs playing music and prize giveaways launched into the crowd. It was a hub for college basketball fans visiting for the men's and women's Big Ten Tournaments. Now having the Wolves keep their season going deep into the spring keeps that downtown momentum going.

"It's good for business, it's good for Minneapolis business," Amanda Neitzke said. "I think it's great for people to see downtown thriving again."

The atmosphere is slated to be "electric," and the Wolves are ready for the fans to pack target center.

"When you've got community and people coming together for one exciting thing, it definitely raises energy level — camaraderie, spirit — not only in the building during the moments that we play, but out in the community," said Mike Grahl with the Timberwolves.

Outside of the Timberwolves' first playoff match, the Twins host the Tigers at 1:10 p.m. Saturday at Target Field, adding to a busy stretch for Minneapolis's North Loop neighborhood.
