Day 6-9: Fly to Cusco and explore this charming high-altitude city before heading to arguably Peru’s most famous attraction, Machu Picchu. Take the train to this lost Incan city and marvel at one of the world's most incredible archaeological sites.

Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our  10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

Each year before Lent, cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

Learn more about festivals in Peru.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Feast of St Peter and St Paul

National Independence Days

Feast of Santa Rosa de Lima

Battle of Angamos Day

All Saints Day

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Please note that the dates of  Peru's public holidays  may vary.

Is tipping customary in Peru?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Peru, it's customary to add spare change or a small amount to restaurant bills. Although most restaurants and bars may already include a 10% service charge within the bill, feel free to add more if the service was good. Taxi drivers generally don't expect tips.

What is the internet access like in Peru?

Internet can be accessed at hotels, restaurants and cafes in large cities, but it can be more limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Peru?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Peru’s cities, but may not be available in more remote and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. You could also buy a local SIM card when you arrive.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good idea for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Peru?

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if traveling on the Inca Trail.

Can I drink the tap water in Peru?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Peru . I t's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating . Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?

Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Expect to pay cash when dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.

What is ATM access like in Peru?

ATMs can be found in most of Peru's major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are far less common in rural areas and small villages so have enough cash to cover purchases when traveling away from the larger cities.

No vaccines are required in order to enter Peru but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Recommended travel vaccines for Peru:

1. Hepatitis A (transmitted through contaminated water) 2. Typhoid (transmitted through contaminated water) 3. Yellow Fever (transmitted by mosquitos): This vaccination is recommended if you’re visiting Puno or the Amazon. Some countries require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry after visiting Peru. Do your research before leaving home to see if you require this vaccine.

What kinds of transport will be used in Peru?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are much more fun.

Pedal along Lima’s incredible coastline, making your way through local areas and go on a cycling adventure to the epic Sacred Valley.

Spot exotic flowers, birds and mammals while enjoying a canoe ride down the mighty Amazon River.

Everyone gets a window seat while riding on the Vistadome train. The clear roof and windows allow maximum viewing for all.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQIA+ friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is, in fact, the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQIA+ rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community don’t publicly identify themselves, and generally, Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Our top 5 things to do in Peru

Our Peru guided tours will reveal the best of Peru, from the mysteries of Machu Picchu to ancient Andean weaving and vibrant local markets.

Larco Museum

Located in an 18th-century vice-royal building in Lima, the Larco Museum houses an excellent collection of pre-Columbian artefacts. You’ll take a journey through Peru’s history, with chronological galleries that display 5,000 years of pre-Columbian history, including ceramics, jewellery, crowns, masks, garments and gold vases.

One of the top museums on the continent, Museo Inka is an incredible showcase of the Inca Empire. You can spend hours immersing yourself in the world of the Incas, with rooms full of crockery, textiles, jewellery, goldwork, models, ancient mummies and the world’s largest collection of queros (ceremonial wooden drinking vessels).

Gold Museum of Peru

The Gold Museum of Peru is a fantastic display of Peruvian gold craftsmanship. There are thousands of items from centuries of Peruvian history, including the earflaps and bracelets of the Vicus, the belts and earrings of the Frias, the masks and wristbands of the Nazca and the crowns of the Chancay.

Best museums in Peru

Our guided trips to Peru will reveal the country’s rich history through the top museums, from ancient Peruvian goldwork to the wondrous world of the Inca Empire.

Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.

Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today they’re one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. They’re a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and they’re served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.

Causa Rellena

A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.

Best food in Peru

Peruvian cuisine is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you the best places to try everything from traditional meat skewers to Chinese style chifa.

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 8 days

Tour radar continues to connect us with the best local guides for our adventures. This is the second trip we booked through them. In this instance, Trexexperience for the Inca trail trek to Machu Pichu plus some other day trips was the vendor they connected us with. The guides were more then knowledgeable and helped us through an unexpected health issue with knowledge and care. The accomodations, transportation and food were also excellent. I will continue to use Tour Radar as a portal for future adventures. They do their homework and only connect you with the best!

The Inca Journey

The itinerary for this trip, and clarity of communication from GAdventures was superior. As were our guides! What you get for your money is really good for this trip. That said -- you get what you pay for with accommodations. They were all fine, some a bit noisy, some had crumby towels or showers.... but if you want what you'd consider by American standards "nice lodging," you will have to pay for a little more costly trip. Again, just want to reiterate, this trip is a great value and adventure of a lifetime!

Premium Peru Tour

Premium Peru

Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.

06 Days Cusco Machu Picchu - Humantay Lake And Rainbow Mountain Tour

06 Days Cusco Machu Picchu - Humantay Lake And Rainbow Mountain

A really well organised tour and a lovely hotel in Cusco. 3 consecutive days of really early starts (0400 pick up) after late finish can be quite taxing. Destinations are sensational. Would recommend spreading the tours over more days or having overnight stays closer to the destination rather than always returning Cusco. Also advise arriving early in Cusco to acclimatise as the altitude can be a problem.

The Inca Trail Tour

The Inca Trail

The service and experience was beyond my expectations. Our guide was the most knowledgable and passionate guide I have ever had. The food was amazing, like a 4 star restaurant on the trail. The adventure was planned out and executed perfectly! I will always book with G Adventures in the future.

Southern Treasures - 8 Days Tour

Southern Treasures - 8 Days

The tour delivered more than what we expected. We had all the time that we need to see the sights we visited. All hotels were excellent with very good breakfast. We were always on time. The van transport was very comfortable. There was no problem with timeliness. My wife and I have travelled in a lot of places, and we have been in group tours – private, small-groups and big-groups. Freddy T, in my opinion, has been our best tour guide. Right off the bat, his friendly and happy demeanor will get anyone at ease right away. He was well-versed in the history of Peru in general, and Cusco and the Incas in particular. He explained very well the flora and fauna of the region. We learned a lot about the history and culture of the Incas. He has a great way of communicating with people. Everywhere we went, people greeted him, which gave me the impression that his friendliness has translated to kindness. He is a great asset to the travel company, and if I were his supervisor, I will recommend him for a pay raise!

WONDERS OF PERU - 9 DAYS – Cusco & Puno

My guide for Machu Picchu Paul Cano did a fantastic job. I am very pleased with the service I received. The only surprise for me was that I had 3 different guides during these 9 days. I did not expect to change my guides that often but it was not really an issue. I've already recommended this tour to a few of my friends.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu + Rainbow Mountain 8 days Tour

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu + Rainbow Mountain 8 days

Traveling alone to South America, I was a bit nervous but Trexperience took great care of me and they went above and beyond to make sure that I was safe and informed of my plans and what the excursions would be each day. I did the walking tour of Cusco and surrounding areas, Rainbow Mountain, a tour of the Sacred Valley and the 4 day Inca Trail Trek. This trip was an experience of a lifetime and I left a completely different person. I feel so grateful to Trexperience for their expertise and communication. Hiking the Inca Trail was beyond my wildest dreams and they went above and beyond to make it memorable. Everything from the food to the camp setup to the tour guides were top notch. We had gourmet chefs and each meal topped the other. The guides were extremely knowledgable, caring and passionate about their culture and people. The airlines also lost my luggage and they were extremely diligent in finding my bag for me by continually calling LATAM airlines to find out where it was at. I was jetlagged, tired and nervous to be alone in a foreign country and they made me feel safe. I will forever be grateful to them for giving me a dream vacation.

Inca Trail Express (5 destinations) Tour

Inca Trail Express (5 destinations)

The hiking is not safe for the last hiker who was walking slow and all alone on the trail. The leader guide was leading ahead and left the last person on his own! There was not any last leader to keep accompany with the tourist! At the trail junction I was lost the whole group!

Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days/4 Nights Tour

Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days/4 Nights

My friends and I had the best experience with Action Peru Treks! Our tour guide, Sabi, was so patient, kind, knowledgeable, and in general an awesome leader! The cooks on our trek cooked the most delicious meals! We were amazed how they could cook such delicious food in the middle of nowhere. All crew members on our trek were amazing, sweet, helpful, caring people! We always felt so safe even though we were far from civilization. I highly recommend booking a trek with Action Peru Treks! I have fond wonderful memories of our trip and I can't wait to go back to Peru to go on another adventure with Action Peru Treks! Peru is a beautiful country with so much to explore!

Client Testimonials

Great tour. Guides were excellent and we got an realistic feel for the history and culture of Lima. Cusco and Machu Picchu. They handled any issues that arose with a lot of class. A bit more casual than what we're accustomed to in terms of scheduling but I think that added to the enjoyment of the trip.

Google

Traveled this December to Cusco with my wife and some friends, finally lined up some vacation time to check out the Inca Trail. We got in touch with Journey Machu Picchu (our travel agent's name was Eduardo),they organized the whole trip for us. They took care of all the permits, hotels, tours, guides, etc, even got us an upgrade on the trains. We had an issue with my wife the day before starting the trail and assumed we'd have to cancel everything. Nope, they hooked her up with different tours while we were on the trail and met back up in Machu Picchu. The trail itself was so much better than I'd thought it'd be. Edgar (our guide) helped us along every step of the way. We had an awesome time and hope to do a few more treks in the future, the Salkantay looked pretty cool.

Thank you so much to Marco, Michael and all the staff that makes our journey very memorable. To our tour guide in Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu, thank you for sharing your country's amazing history. Thank you for the driver for showing us the other side of the country, and buying lechon from the locals on the way to Olantaytambo.

ook a 10 day package with Journey at the end of November leading into the holidays. Went to Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. We got to see all the mainstays as far as I know. Great, well organized trip. The altitude hit me a bit hard during the first couple of days but I was allright after that. Our guides were great, our guide in Machu Picchu was exceptional, he answered all of our questions, never left us with any sort of uncertainty. The airport was a bit of a hassle though, customs took forever to let us through but I can't hold you guys accountable for that. Thank you for helping a couple of old men finally take this trip, the logistics was getting a bit too out of hand for us. Very friendly staff on the whole.

It was an amazing trip. All the food was included, the guide was phenomenal and the hike itself was stunning!

The trip went according to plan . Machu Picchu was amazing and staying at the sacred valley was a great decision!! I can’t wait to wait to go back soon 😍😍

El itinerario que tuvimos fue excelente. Buena calidad de equipo y comprometidos con su trabajo. Si volviera a organizar otro paseo sin duda alguna lo haría con Journey Machu Picchu. Gracias y sigan así. (Translated by Google) The itinerary we had was excellent. Good team quality and committed to their work. Loved this place!

The trip was amazing...

The guides were informative and made interesting stops along the way during our transfers. We added the tour of the Sacred Valley and saw the Temple of the Sun, which was a highlight after being at Machu Picchu the previous day. We saw even more of the Inca's amazing architecture and terraces.

More information about peru.

Located on the west coast of South America , Peru is a country that ignites the imagination of travelers worldwide, with its fascinating ancient civilizations, wondrous natural attractions, and iconic monuments. Bordered by Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile,  and Brazil, and with a vast coastline along the Pacific Ocean, a tour of Peru is one of the must-do travel experiences. The country has a diverse landscape, stretching from the arid plains of Nazca , where the mysterious Nazca Lines are located, to the high altitude peaks of the Andes. The legacy of the Inca Empire and the remnants of this mighty civilization, preserved in monuments such as Machu Picchu and the Rachqui Ruins, are unmissable sights on a vacation to Peru, along with the colonial architecture of its colorful cities, such as the capital, Lima. Peru encourages visitors to be adventurous, with a multitude of activities on offer, from sailing on Lake Titicaca to trekking in the Sacred Valley . The famous Inca Trail , reserved for the most adventurous of travelers, is perhaps the most famous of all trekking routes, culminating in an ascent to Machu Picchu . One of the region's most prosperous economies, with a huge tourist industry, Peru has become increasingly popular in recent years, with travelers keen to tick its many sights off of their bucket lists.

Nature in Peru

Peru is a megadiverse country, and the sanctuary of many of the world’s species of animal, bird and plant life, including a large number of endemic species. From the Altiplano to the Amazon Basin , the country’s diverse geography and accompanying wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers. The Amazon Rainforest in Peru, known for its heavy rainfall and tropical, humid climate, is home to a plethora of weird and wonderful animals species such as the pink river dolphin, found in the Amazon River , jaguars, giant otters, and primates, along with an impressive one-third of the worlds bird species. The national bird is the bizarre Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, whilst the mighty Andean Condor is the highlight of Peru’s Colca Canyon , a deep river canyon in the south of the country where viewpoints such as the Cruz del Condor allowing onlookers to watch the flight of huge Condors , the largest flying bird in the world. The uninhabited Ballestas Islands, located off the coast of the port city of Pisco , is home to large populations of sea lions, pelicans, Peruvian boobies, and Humboldt penguins, and is a popular day-trip destination for travelers on a vacation package to Peru. Aside from the country’s rich wildlife, Lake Titicaca stands out as an incredible natural attraction, owing to its immense size and altitude, securing it the title of the world’s highest navigable body of water and the largest lake in South America. In Andean traditions, it is thought to be the birthplace of the Sun God , and its glistening, reflective waters, which stretch across the border between Bolivia and Peru, are home to numerous floating islands, such as Taquile and Isla del Sol, where traditional communities live and work. Tour packages to Peru all-inclusive offer travelers a chance to discover the great variety of the country’s bountiful nature in one exciting trip.

History of Peru

Peru’s history can be traced back to the 4th century BC and to the ancient societies of the Chavin, Moche, and the Nasca. The most well-known era of Peruvian history came later, in the 15th century with the enigmatic Inca civilization, which emerged as a powerful state in this period. Growing out of their capital in Cusco , this revered civilization started as a small ethnic group of Quechuas , but soon their influence expanded and incorporated their neighbors under the great Emperor Pachacuti . The Inca Empire eventually controlled most of the Andean region, stretching into modern-day Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile,  and Argentina, and are thought to have had a population of approximately 16 million inhabitants, who were encouraged to worship the Sun God, Inti and practice human sacrifice as a means to appease the gods. This mysterious civilization did not last for long, as by 1532, Spanish conquistadors had captured the Inca Emperor in the Battle of Cajamarca , marking the beginning of the end for the Incas. The emperor was later killed and a long conquest ensued, resulting in many deaths for the indigenous community, caused by both disease and warfare. Spanish victory came in 1572 , with colonization and the destruction of much of the culture, monuments, religion, and heritage of the Incas following shortly afterward. Spanish language, culture, and Catholicism replaced the indigenous beliefs and way of life, although even today, populations continue to speak in their native languages, such as Quechua. Most travelers on a  Peru vacation are excited to discover the lost ruins of the Inca Empire , such as Machu Picchu, and to understand the values and traditions of this iconic civilization.

Culture in Peru

With a population of approximately 32 million, made up of a variety of ethnicities, Peru has a diverse culture, ranging from Spanish influences, as seen in the language and architecture, to indigenous traditions as demonstrated in the varied folklore and musical styles and dances, which often include references to ancient beliefs surrounding spirits and the Sun God. The indigenous communities are also well known for their arts and crafts, such as the brightly colored Andean clothing, with their intricate embroidery and vibrant patterns. The different regions of Peru possess their own unique influences and traditions; in the highlands of the Andes you can expect to see folklore displays with flute and drum music, ritualistic dance, and masks, whilst down in the Amazon , tribal influences are more evident. In the coastal cities, there is an obvious Spanish character, both in the cuisine, terraced cafes, and architecture. In contrast, travel through the Sacred Valley and you may feel as if you have been transported back in time, as you pass through the traditional villages of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, with their authentic markets, artisan textile weavers, Quechua- speaking communities and monolithic temple ruins, considered sacred to the inhabitants. Despite the modern feel of the coastal capital of Lima, you are never far from making contact with the ancient traditions and culture of the country’s earliest civilizations.A trip to Peru will allow you to walk in the footsteps of the Inca’s, get up close to some of the world's most diverse and unique wildlife, uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines and realize your dreams of navigating Lake Titicaca. A paradise for the most intrepid travelers, a tour of Peru is a must-do bucket list experience.

Peru Vacation Packages and Tours

travel to peru package

Peru offers the visitor on a Peru vacation an extraordinary array of wonders both historical and geographical. The country is divided into three regions. There is the coastal Pacific plain on which the capital, Lima is located, the Altiplano of the Andean mountain range and the jungle which covers approximately half of Peru in the Amazonian Rainforest . The inhabitants of Peru are a mixture of ethnic backgrounds (Spanish, Indigenous and African) and contribute greatly to the cuisine and the music of the country.

Lima, situated on the Pacific Ocean, is a large busy city. The centre or Centro Historico as it is known locally is a UNESCO World Heritage site based on its beautiful pre-Hispanic and Colonial architecture. The oldest buildings can be found in an area called Barrios Altos. One museum that is a must-visit is the Museo Larco which relates the country’s history in an interesting and engaging way. The upscale suburb of Miraflores situated on the ocean with its many parks and gardens is where a large number of tourists stay. It has many high-rise modern buildings and is home to a number of hotels and restaurants, all to be enjoyed on Peru tours.

Cusco , also known as Cuzco, is a magical city with a rich archaeological legacy. It was the capital of the Inca Empire and as such is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cusco is easy to walk around to get to know this colourful walled city. The beautiful and lively Plaza de Armas in the very centre consists of churches, shops, restaurants and bars. The vibrant San Pedro Market is an excellent place to watch the locals do their shopping. Nearby is Sacsayhuaman which is approximately 1 mile/2 kilometres outside of Cusco. It is something of a climb to reach on foot but well worth the effort due to its ambience and its Inca relics.

  • Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley is not too far from Cusco and is so named because the Incas found it to have the best land. Situated in the Urubamba Valley, it contains numerous archaeological remains. Visit Pisac, famous for its Indian market with excellent handicrafts for sale and also its Inca ruins. On Peru tours, another interesting town in the valley is Ollantaytambo which is laid out as it was in Inca times. It is an old town built over a period of 500 years by the Incas. The Inca ruins here are large of religious significance and date back to the time when the Incas defeated the Spanish in a battle here.

  • Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the true wonders of the world. Only discovered in 1911, the name in the ancient language of the Incas, Quechan, means “Old Mountain”. It is actually a citadel perched high on top of a mountain and was the centre of worship for the Incas. It also served as an astronomical observatory.

The Inca Trail is a well-known trekking route on Peru vacation packages which starts 3 to 4 days of walking outside Machu Picchu arriving eventually at the site of Machu Picchu. It is 43 kilometres/27 miles in length. This stone-paved trail is not only Peru’s most popular trek but one of the most spectacular walks in Latin America.

  • Lake Titicaca

If one takes the train from Cusco to the south of the country to Puno on Lake Titicaca , the journey will be awe-inspiring as it travels through the most amazing mountain scenery.

Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake and is shared by both Peru and Bolivia . Puno is a port on the banks of the lake and also a picturesque hillside city. It is here that one can see many local women and men in their traditional clothing. One of the main attractions is the floating islands of Uros. These do actually float and are made of reed as are the houses and the boats of the local residents. Not too far away is the uninhabited Isla de la Luna known for its mythological significance for the Incas.

Peru’s second-largest city is Arequipa located on the southern coastal plain of the country below the Andean Altiplano. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its well-preserved old buildings and many churches. There are over 250 colonial buildings here. The Plaza de Armas is a beautiful square in the centre. Other attractions are the magnificent cathedral and the Convento de Santa Catalina, the most visited building in the city. The latter is actually a “city within a city” with narrow streets and a timeless air

Not far from Arequipa is the amazing Colca Canyon, the world’s deepest canyon and twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The area is astoundingly scenic. There are endless trails in the area which link around 14 villages which have been preserved from early Colonial times.

Amazon Jungle

One other region which is of interest on Peru tours is the Amazon Jungle best travelled on board a small cruise vessel which will take you deep into the heart of the jungle to the meeting point of two Amazon River tributaries.

Other Places to Visit

One very unusual place to visit is Paracas on the Pacific Ocean. It is from here that one can view the Nazca Lines in a small aircraft. These are an age-old mystery. They are an area of land seen only properly from the air consisting of complex designs up to 300 metres/980 feet in length. They consist of vast drawings of figures of animals, insects and deities. They were only discovered in 1927 and date back to as early as 300 BC.

Peru is a destination for travellers looking for something off the beaten track. If you are looking for a unique trip, book one of our Peru tours today....you won't be disappointed!

BOULEVARD, Calif. (AP) — Julia Paredes believed her move to the United States might be now or never. Mexico was days from requiring visas for Peruvian visitors. If she didn’t act quickly, she would have to make a far more perilous, surreptitious journey over land to settle with her sister in Dallas.

Mexico began requiring visas for Peruvians on Monday in response to a major influx of migrants from the South American country, after identical moves for Venezuelans, Ecuadorians and Brazilians. It effectively eliminated the option of flying to a Mexican city near the U.S. border, as Paredes, 45, did just before it was too late.

“I had to treat it as a emergency,” said Paredes, who worked serving lunch to miners in Arequipa, Peru, and borrowed money to fly to Mexico’s Tijuana, across from San Diego. Last month smugglers guided her through a remote opening in the border wall to a dirt lot in California, where she and about 100 migrants from around the world shivered over campfires after a morning drizzle and waited for overwhelmed Border Patrol agents to drive them to a station for processing.

Senior U.S. officials, speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of top diplomats from about 20 countries in the Western hemisphere this week in Guatemala, applauded Mexico’s crackdown on air travel from Peru and called visa requirements an important tool to jointly confront illegal migration.

Bright yellow blooms carpet the ground, a sharp contrast to the imposing steel bollards of the border wall topped with rolls of razor wire as members of the California's Baja Rare conservation project lead a botanical expedition with botanists and citizen scientists to document native plants along the U.S.- Mexico border on Friday, April 19, 2024, in the Ejido Jacume in the Tecate Municipality of Baja Calif., Mexico. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

For critics, shutting down air travel only encourages more dangerous choices. Illegal migration by Venezuelans plummeted after Mexico imposed visa requirements in January 2022, but the lull was short-lived. Last year Venezuelans made up nearly two-thirds of the record-high 520,000 migrants who walked through the Darien Gap, the notorious jungle spanning parts of Panama and Colombia.

More than 25,000 Chinese traversed the Darien last year. They generally fly to Ecuador, a country known for few travel restrictions, and cross the U.S. border illegally in San Diego to seek asylum. With an immigration court backlog topping 3 million cases, it takes years to decide such claims, during which time people can obtain work permits and establish roots.

“People are going to come no matter what,” said Miguel Yaranga, 22, who flew from Lima, Peru’s capital, to Tijuana and was released by the Border Patrol Sunday at a San Diego bus stop. He had orders to appear in immigration court in New York in February 2025, which puzzled him because he said he told agents he would settle with his sister on the other side of the country, in Bakersfield, California.

Jeremy MacGillivray, deputy chief of the Mexico mission of the U.N.'s International Organization for Migration, predicts that Peruvian migration will drop “at least at the beginning” and bounce back as people shift to walking through the Darien Gap and to Central America and Mexico.

Mexico said last month that it would require visas for Peruvians for the first time since 2012 in response to a “substantial increase” in illegal migration. Large-scale Peruvian migration to Mexico began in 2022; Peruvians were stopped in the country an average of 2,160 times a month from January to March of this year, up from a monthly average of 544 times for all of 2023.

Peruvians also began showing up at the U.S. border in 2022. The U.S. Border Patrol arrested Peruvians an average of about 5,300 times a month last year before falling to a monthly average of 3,400 from January through March, amid a broad immigration crackdown by Mexico .

Peru immediately reciprocated Mexico’s visa requirement but changed course after a backlash from the country’s tourism industry. Peru noted in its reversal that it is part of a regional economic bloc that includes Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

Adam Isacson, an analyst at the Washington Office on Latin America, said Peru’s membership with Mexico in the Pacific Alliance allowed its citizens visa-free travel longer than other countries.

It is unclear if Colombia, also a major source of migration , will be next, but Isacson said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is in a “lovefest” with his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, while his relations with Peru’s government are more strained.

Colombians are consistently near the top nationalities of migrants arriving at Tijuana’s airport. Many find hotels before a guide takes them to boulder-strewn mountains east of the city, where they cross through openings in the border wall and then walk toward dirt lots that the Border Patrol has identified as waiting stations.

Bryan Ramírez, 25, of Colombia, reached U.S. soil with his girlfriend last month, only two days after leaving Bogota for Cancun, Mexico, and continuing on another flight to Tijuana. He waited alongside others overnight for Border Patrol agents to pick him up as cold rain and high winds whipped over the crackle of high-voltage power lines.

The group waiting near Boulevard, a small, loosely defined rural town, included several Peruvians who said they came for economic opportunity and to escape violence and political crises.

Peruvians can still avoid the Darien jungle by flying to El Salvador, which introduced visa-free travel for them in December in reciprocation for a similar move by Peru’s government. But they would still have to travel over land through Mexico, where many are robbed or kidnapped.

Ecuadoreans, who have needed visas to enter Mexico since September 2021, can also fly to El Salvador, but not all do. Oscar Palacios, 42, said he walked through Darien because he couldn’t afford to fly.

Palacios, who left his wife and year-old child in Ecuador with plans to support them financially from the U.S., said it took him two weeks to travel from his home near the violent city of Esmeralda to Mexico’s border with Guatemala. It then took him two months to cross Mexico because immigration authorities turned him around three times and bused him back to the southern part of the country. He said he was robbed repeatedly.

Palacios finally reached Tijuana and, after three nights in a hotel, crossed into the U.S. A Border Patrol agent spotted him with migrants from Turkey and Brazil and drove them to the dirt lot to wait for a van or bus to take them to a station for processing. Looking back on the journey, Palacios said he would rather cross Darien Gap 100 times than Mexico even once.
