How to Get Your Turkish e-Visa Online and Avoid the Queue

The Turkish e-Visa (or Electronic Visa) replaced the famous ‘sticker visa’ starting 2014. Is this a bad thing? No, not at all. The Turkish online visa procedure is quick, smooth and actually saves you time since you no longer have to stand in line to get your ‘sticker visa’. Let me explain what an e-Visa is, who can get one, and how the procedure works.

How to get a Turkish Visa or e-Visa online..

What Is a Turkish Electronic Visa or e-Visa

Let’s make this clear right from the start: this is only for tourist or trade visas! For other purposes such as work or study, you must apply through Turkish Embassies or Consulates in your country.

Up until now, citizens of certain nationalities were able to travel to Turkey with just their valid passport or identity card, and buy their tourist visa at the border crossing. A sticker was either pasted in their passport or on a piece of paper, hence the name ‘sticker visa’. As of 2014, the government decided to reduce the waiting and queuing times at the different border crossings by introducing the Electronic Visa or e-Visa. Some countries can still get the sticker visa but fees are higher, and really, why bother. The e-Visa is quick and easy.

An e-Visa is nothing more or less than applying for (and receiving) your Turkish tourist visa online from the comforts of your home. You go through a series of steps wherein you provide them with the required information, use your credit card to pay for it (instead of cash money upon arrival), and finally print out your visa.

Who Can Get a Turkish Electronic Visa or e-Visa

Who can get a Turkish Visa or e-Visa online.

Currently, citizens of just under 100 countries are eligible to get an Electronic Visa. Since countries are added and removed over time, please check to see whether citizens of your country are currently eligible for an e-Visa .

If the rules for your country do not include the words ‘e-Visa’, then you are either exempt from visa or you need to visit the nearest Turkish Embassy/Consulate General for visa application. If you do try to use the electronic visa application, you’ll get the screenshot on the right.

How Can I Get My Turkish Electronic Visa or e-Visa

First of all, let’s assume you either carry an ordinary passport or an identity card. If you’re not sure about your passport type, here you can read the difference between an official and an ordinary passport .

There are nine simple steps to complete. Please make sure to have the necessary documents and a valid credit card handy.

Step 1 – Open up your preferred browser and go to www.evisa.gov.tr . The website is available in many languages.

Step 2 – Click at the upper left on ‘Apply now’. Select the country and the passport or identity card (of the chosen country) you will be using. Also prove you’re human by typing the displayed letters and/or numbers. Then click on ‘Save and Continue’

Step 3 – Enter your arrival date. At this point, you will get quite a bit of important information: how long your visa will be valid, where you can enter the country once or multiple times during this period, how much it will cost you, and how you will pay for it (see arrows). Press ‘Save and Continue’ to proceed or simply close your browser if you don’t like what you see.

Step 4 – Enter your personal data. All fields are obligatory, but for some countries mother’s and father’s name fields are optional. I strongly urge you to use the date pickers to enter the respective dates. This way you’re sure you use the correct format (if not you need to redo it). Also, disregard white spaces or special characters (like – ) if they are used in your passport or identity card number. Press the button at the bottom to continue.

Step 5 – Once you see this screen, all data has been accepted and you are good to go. You have one last chance to review the information you provided. Take your time to check it all. A small mistake may cause big problems at the border! Click ‘Edit’ if you need to change something, ‘Verify’ to submit and continue.

Step 6 – At this point, your application has been submitted, and an email has been sent to you to verify whether it is really you who applied. Check your email immediately. If you didn’t receive anything within a minute, check your spam folder because that’s where mine ended up. If that’s the case, make sure to tell your email service that mails sent from this sender are not spam, because you will get one more down the road.

Click on the approve button to verify your email address. If you can’t see the button, make sure you tell your email service to show all images for this email.

Step 7 – After clicking the verify email button, you’ll be taken to the payment page. Enter the necessary information, and proceed by clicking ‘Make Payment’.

How to get a Turkish Visa or e-Visa online - Step 7

Step 8 – Once your payment has been approved, you’ll get a notification that your e-Visa has been sent to you. This is not true. You just received an email with a button to download it. Don’t bother waiting for it, and download the visa (in pdf format) right from the current page. Make sure you know where you save it because you will need to print it out. In case you fail to download it, no worries, you can always download it again via the link provided to you by email.

How to get a Turkish Visa or e-Visa online - Step 8

If this is a business trip and you need an invoice, first download the actual visa, then press the invoice button.

Step 9 – The final step: open the saved/downloaded pdf document and print it. In my experience, it doesn’t matter whether it’s in color or just black and white. But make very sure you take it with you, and keep it on you together with your passport or identity card (whatever you chose while applying) during your stay.

Can I Make Bulk Applications?

Yes, you can. They call it a Family Application. These can be created for minimum two and maximum 10 people. However, all members must originate from the same country, must carry the same travel document type (e.g. normal passport, identity card), and their arrival dates must be the same.

To apply, after you select ‘Country/Region’ of travel document and ‘Date of Arrival’, fill up ‘Personal Information’ form for the first member of the family. Then click ‘Add a New Person’ button. At this point you have a last time to verify the first person’s data. After you approve, you can add the details for the second member, and so on.

Upon completing the application of the last member of the family by clicking the ‘Continue’ button. You’ll receive an email to confirm your email address. A lump sum payment can be made after this stage. Upon receiving the payment, you will be able to download the e-Visas a payment receipt (under the name of the first applicant).

Me and my family are travelling to Turkey next month. Myself and my 2 children have British passport, however my wife has a Bangladeshi passport with a UK Residence Card. When applying for visa for my wife should I use her original passport or UK Residence card on the application, or should she go to the consulate in London

When you go to the website of Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs there is a list of countries with information for each of them. Here is what it says for Bangladesh: Bangladeshi nationals holding diplomatic and official/service passport are exempted from visa for their travels up to 90 days. Ordinary passport holders are required to have visa. These passport holders with a valid Schengen members or USA, UK, Ireland visa or residence permit may get their single entry e-Visas valid for one month e-Visas via the website http://www.evisa.gov.tr , provided that they meet certain conditions.

Please check from e-Visa website which is very clear and simple if your wife meets certain conditions.

If you don’t meet the requirements they list to apply for the e-visa, you’re asking for problems. The border checkpoint is very strict.

January 23, 2019 at 12:36 pm

Are there any disadvantages to a family application? In practice, are there problems entering Turkey if only one member of the family travels, or they travel at different times (all within the visa period)?

January 27, 2019 at 2:13 pm

That’s a good question Jenni. I haven’t tried that myself, so I can’t give you advice on that.

You can ask them , I’m sure they’ll reply.

Best of luck.

Turkey Visa for Tourists: A Complete Guide

Updated: October 19, 2023

Turkey visa on arrival image

Turkey has a liberal visa policy offering visa exemption and e-visas to many nationalities. A Turkey visa is also quite easy to obtain from the embassy or an authorized agent.

Turkey has introduced e-Visa to simplify its visa application process and replace its Visa on Arrival. Currently, 30 nationalities can obtain a Turkey e-Visa from the comfort of their homes. 21 nationalities can also obtain an e-Visa if holding a visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK or Ireland.

Many nationalities from the African continent that were previously eligible for e-Visas were unfortunately removed from that list recently. They will now have to apply for a Turkey visa through a Turkish mission or an agent.

Minimum passport validity to enter Turkey as a tourist

The passport validity is different for different nationalities. It also depends on whether you are visa-exempt or require a visa.

For nationalities that are visa-exempt, the minimum passport validity required is 60 days beyond your “allowed period of stay” in Turkey. For some, it’s 90 days.

For those who require an e-Visa, VOA or visa from the embassy, the minimum passport validity required is 6 months from the day of arrival. For some, it’s 3 months beyond the validity of their visas.

So in general, you will be fine with 6 months of validity remaining your passport at the time of entering Turkey.

Turkey transit visa requirements

Transit visas are NOT REQUIRED for transiting through Turkish international airports.

If you are not leaving the international transit area, then you do not require a transit visa. But if you have to leave the international transit area, or claim your bags, or change to a different airline, then you would require a transit visa.

Turkey visa requirements for cruise passengers

A Turkey visa is NOT REQUIRED for cruise passengers for up to 72 hours.

Cruise visitors are issued a Harbor City Entry Permit that’s valid for 72 hours and limited to the harbor city where the cruise arrived and its surroundings.

TURKEY VISA ON ARRIVAL

Turkey introduced its e-Visa system in 2013 with the intention of phasing out its Visa on Arrival. But VOA is still available and a few countries that are eligible for e-Visa are also eligible for obtaining VOA at international airports in Turkey.

Even though the e-Visa takes only a few minutes to apply, the VOA fee is considerably lower than the e-Visa fee for certain nationalities. It makes sense to simply get a VOA instead of an e-Visa if you are eligible and the fee is lower.

Validity of Turkey Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days, with multiple entries. Total stay cannot be more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

How long can you stay in Turkey with Visa on Arrival

Turkey Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days. That means, if you continue to stay in Turkey after you have obtained your Visa on Arrival, you can stay up to 90 days. But if you leave and come back, you can only stay until your Visa on Arrival expiration date.

Also, your total stay in Turkey cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Your arrival date in Turkey is March 10
  • You obtained VOA on March 10
  • Your visa is valid from 10 March 2022 to 08 June 2022 (90 days)
  • After 45 days, on 24 April 2022, you left Turkey.
  • You entered Turkey again on 19 May 2022 using your previous VOA. You can only stay till 08 June 2022, which is 21 days.

Visa on Arrival application process

The VOA process is quite quick at airports in Turkey. Right before the immigration or passport control, you will see a section called “Visa”. Stop by there and get your visa on arrival.

For obtaining VOA, all you need is your passport and visa on arrival fee in USD, EUR or GBP. Some nationalities require a passport-size photo.

Documents required

You must present the following documents.

  • Passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Turkey
  • Cash in USD, EUR or GBP for visa fee payment

The Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee starts from $30 and goes up all the way to $70 USD depending on nationality. Below is the Visa on Arrival fee for all eligible nationalities.

Processing time

It usually takes a few minutes for the Visa on Arrival process. But it depends on how busy the Visa on Arrival section is.

TURKEY E-VISA

Turkey e-Visa - Step-by-step guide

Turkey introduced its e-Visa portal in 2013 to help visitors obtain visas from the comfort of their homes. Today, 51 countries are eligible for Turkey e-Visa .

E-visa approval is immediate and it only takes 5 minutes to obtain the e-Visa.

Validity of Turkey e-Visa

The validity of the Turkey e-Visa is 180 days from the “arrival date” that you’ve selected in your e-Visa application.

E-Visas are either single-entry or multiple-entry depending on your passport. You must enter Turkey within the validity of your e-Visa.

When to apply for e-Visa

You can apply for your Turkey e-Visa up to 3 months in advance. The latest you can apply is 48 hours.

How long can you stay in Turkey on e-Visa

Depending on your passport, you can either stay up to 30 days or 90 days on an e-Visa. Your total stay cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

E-Visa application process

Turkey e-Visa approval is immediate so there is no processing time. The application is quite simple, so it only takes about 10 minutes. You can pay the fee with a credit/debit card.

You will need the following documents.

  • Original passport
  • A valid visa from the US, UK, Ireland or Schengen (for those that require a supporting document)
  • A credit or debit card for visa fee payment

Photo requirements

A photo is not required for the Turkey e-Visa application

The e-Visa fee varies from “no fee” to $77 USD depending on the passport. Below is the table for the current Turkey e-Visa fee.

There is no processing time for the Turkey e-visa as the approval is immediate. You can then save it as a PDF on your phone or print it to carry with you when you travel.

Turkey will be one of the top tourist destinations in 2024 for its mesmerizing beauty of lakes and scenic wonders, especially the sights of Istanbul , Troy, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia , and much more. In fact, if you are one of those who love shopping, Grand Bazar is here to flutter your heart.

But, traveling to Turkey is not just about planning your itinerary, packing your bags, and being all set to go. Applying for a Turkey tourist visa is the most important thing you need to be concerned about. And, in today’s blog, we will delve into every small detail of the Turkey visa online application step-by-step. Let’s get started.

What is a Turkey eVisa?

A Turkey visa online is a legal permit or travel authorization to enter and stay in this country. It allows a foreign tourist to stay for up to 90 days in Turkey within 180 days of visa validity. It is electronically linked to the passport, so Turkish passport officials can easily verify eVisa's validity at the port of entry. Turkey eVisa can be both a single-entry and multiple-entry visa based on the passport type, allowing many nationalities to apply. With a multiple-entry visa, an individual can enter this country several times within the visa validity period.

However, if you belong to a nationality where one needs to visit the nearest Embassy to apply for a Turkey travel visa , it's possible to make an application for a Turkey visa online when holding a residence permit or visa to the UK, US, or Schengen countries.

Turkey eVisa Validity and Requirements

A Turkey online visa is valid for up to 6 months from your intended date of arrival, with a stay of up to 90 days within that validity period. So, if you are worried about how long your Turkey visa validity is, just add 180 days from your arrival date in Turkey.

Now, speaking of eVisa requirements for Turkey, here are the documents you need to submit:

  • A valid credit or debit card to pay the visa fee
  • A valid and original passport with a 6-month visa validity (counted from the day of arrival)
  • Holding a valid visa from Ireland, US, UK, or Schengen
  • An active email ID to receive Turkey eVisa directly via email

How to apply for a Turkey Visa Online

Gone are the days of lengthy paperwork to apply for a tourist visa to Turkey. As technology advances, the Government of Turkey has implemented an eVisa application for Turkey , which takes just 5 minutes to complete the application form. You will get your visa issued within 72 hours unless any issues arise.

Yet, it’s important to understand the right way to fill out the Turkey application form. Here’s the step-by-step guide for you:

Start by visiting the Turkey eVisa portal and clicking on the ‘Apply Now’ button.

Enter the details asked for, including country, travel document, i.e. passport information, security verification, etc., and save and continue to the next step.

Select the expected date of arrival in Turkey carefully, as it will be considered to count your eVisa validity (180 days). Save and continue to the ‘Prerequisites’ page to agree with the requirements mentioned there.

At this step, you need to provide personal information, including your name, date, and place of birth, your parents’ name, the issue and expiration date of your passport with the number, the type of supporting document with the expiration date, such as a residence permit or visa from the US, UK, Schengen, or Ireland, your email address, contact details, and many more.

Once done, save and continue to verify your information, and the application is completed successfully.

Step 5 : Now, go to your email to approve the mail from the Turkey eVisa portal and process to pay the visa fees. Here, you will find the card options displayed on the screen, like a credit or debit card. Just select the option you are available with, enter the details asked for, like the card number and expiration date, and make the payment.

Turke e-Visa Requirements

Once you receive the approved email for the Turkey eVisa application , download it to carry during the trip, as you may be asked to show it at the port of entry. Or you can save the eVisa as a PDF on your phone.

Unlike the traditional visa systems that often involve embassy visits, the electronic Turkey visa is a fully online mechanism. This digital document offers convenience, especially if you’re in the rush.

But you absolutely have to distinguish the eVisa from other visa categories.

While the eVisa is a digital multi-entry visa, there are alternative options like the Turkey transit visa and Turkey visa on arrival. These serve different travel purposes.

  • Turkey Tourist Visa VS Turkey eVisa

Turkey eVisa vs Turkey tourist visa

The traditional Turkey tourist visa necessitates a more rigorous documentation process.

Applicants often part with a lot of required papers, from passports to financial proof, and often wait weeks or sometimes even months for a stamped visa on their passport.

On the other hand, the Turkey eVisa is way more convenient .

This digital authorization bypasses the traditional labyrinth and takes you straight to the official Turkish government portal for a brief online form and electronic payment. Usually, within a day, you receive your eVisa in your inbox.

  • Turkey e-Visa Application Requirements

The electronic visa application system application has to come with a full understanding of the foundational Turkey e visa requirements.

Before we delve into the details, let’s note that while the eVisa is entirely online , it maintains stringent standards to ensure traveler authenticity and security.

Valid Passport

First and foremost, every applicant needs a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended departure date from Turkey.

This not only ensures your genuine intent but also allows Turkish customs officials to stamp upon entry and exit, so there also has to be a blank passport page.

Email Address

Another important point to the eVisa of Republic of Turkey process is the electronic communication method.

Given that the eVisa, once approved, is dispatched to the traveler via email, you will have to possess a valid email ID.

You have to regularly access this email ID to receive visa updates and the final approved eVisa.

Method of Payment

One of the Turkey online visa requirements implies to have a reliable method of payment.

The entire eVisa application process relies on electronic transactions . To pay the Turkey e visa fee, you have to get a valid credit or debit card.

Payments are processed through the Secure PayPal payment gateway.

For Families and Groups

The electronic visa application system also mandates that every individual traveler, irrespective of age, undergoes this application process.

So this means that even if you’re traveling as a family or a group, each member must have a separate eVisa. Upon approval, each traveler will receive a distinct PDF visa confirmation through email.

The introduction of the Turkey eVisa application system has brought a transformative change in how travelers approach their trips.

The eVisa system is also transparent, with clear guidelines and requirements laid out for applicants. And with secure online payment options, the process becomes even more streamlined and efficient !

  • Disadvantages off Turkish eVisa

One important disadvantage is the reliance on a stable internet connection ; any interruptions may halt the application process.

Also, electronic systems are susceptible to technical glitches or server downtimes. The eVisa also lacks the tangible assurance of a traditional stamped visa.

Moreover, without face-to-face interactions, as in consulates, there’s a potential lack of clarity or immediate assistance for complex cases.

Please also note that any errors made during the online application might lead to immediate denials.

  • How To Renew/Extend Turkey Evisa

The Turkish eVisa is issued for tourism or business purposes and has a fixed validity. If you wish to stay longer than the granted period, you can’t directly renew or extend the eVisa .

Instead, you need to apply for a residence permit from the local immigration office in Turkey before your eVisa expires.

It’s also possible to exit Turkey and re-enter, but this depends on visa policies and might require a new eVisa application.

Here's who qualifies for Turkey's new digital nomad visa and how to apply

  • Turkey is the latest country to open its arms to remote workers keen to relocate.
  • Citizens from several European countries, plus Canada and the US, are eligible for a new visa.
  • Here's what it takes to get the Digital Nomad Identification Certificate for Turkey.

Insider Today

Digital nomads are now welcome to stay in Turkey.

The country joins Italy, which recently made a similar announcement, in offering a visa for traveling professionals who want to work remotely in Turkey for an extended time.

The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry created a website dedicated to digital nomads which provides a list of requirements for eligibility and the steps of the application process. The site also provides resources on how to get started in several of its major cities.

Related stories

The Digital Nomad Identification Certificate, which is the first step to a digital nomad visa, is open to remote workers ages 21 to 55.

They have to provide proof that they are a university graduate, work in the "digital nomad field," and that they make at least $3,000 a month, or $36,000 annually, according to the site .

Applicants must also have a passport or travel documents that are valid for at least six months from the date they arrive in Turkey. The offer is only for citizens of several European countries and Canada, Russia, and the US.

If approved, it's as simple as applicants receiving a certificate with a barcode that they can use to apply for the digital nomad visa at the Turkish consulate.

Still, life in the country is not all rosy. Over the years, Turkish citizens have been up against rising inflation, and while the country bumped its minimum wage up 49% in 2024 to about $525 a month, many are still struggling.

However, more and more millennials and Gen Z are giving up on the dream of owning a house in the US, so some have opted to spend their time traveling and working abroad instead of saving for a starter home .

Earlier this month Italy announced that it would welcome remote workers and their families on renewable digital nomad visas.

Turkey Just Launched a Digital Nomad Visa—Here's How to Apply

I t sounds like a dream: working on a laptop at a charming café, sipping some of the best coffee in the world while staring out over the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean or Aegean seas. Now, remote workers can make that lifestyle a reality thanks to Turkey's just-launched digital nomad visa.

The new digital nomad visa officially rolled out in mid-April and is now open to applicants from specific countries who meet Turkey’s income threshold. Visa recipients can live and work in Turkey for up to one year with the option for renewal, according to Time Out magazine.

Here’s everything travelers should know about Turkey's new digital nomad visa, including who is eligible and how to apply. Plus, the best places in Turkey for digital nomads to live, what you should expect in terms of monthly expenses, and tips on how to be a respectful digital nomad in Turkey.

Who is eligible for Turkey's digital nomad visa?

To be eligible for the visa, you must be a remote worker between the ages of 21 and 55 and a citizen of one of 36 countries located throughout Europe and North America, including the US. The full list of eligible countries can be found on the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry’s official application site .

Applicants must also be able to prove they earn at least $3,000 USD monthly or $36,000 USD per year, have a college degree, and are employed with a company outside of Turkey or are self-employed. Finally, prospective digital nomads must have a passport valid for at least six months after arrival in Turkey and a photo for the visa.

How do you apply for Turkey's new digital nomad visa?

Travelers can submit documents proving they meet all of the requirements to Turkey’s online platform . After officials review the documents, eligible travelers will be issued a Digital Nomad Identification Certificate. Take the certificate and your supporting documents to a Turkish visa center or consulate to finish the process and officially obtain your digital nomad visa.

Where are the best places in Turkey for digital nomads to live?

There’s a wide spectrum of areas in Turkey that would suit digital nomads, depending on what type of lifestyle they’re interested in. The country offers everything from bustling cities brimming with culture and history, to smaller, more peaceful seaside enclaves. Turkey's digital nomad website—run by the country's national tourism agency—provides information on several popular destinations, including Dalaman, Marmaris, Antalya, and Fethiye, all smaller cities along the Turkish Riviera, across the Aegean from Greece and Cyprus.

Of course, many expats live and work in Istanbul , one of the most iconic cities in Turkey packed with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, exciting nightlife, world class restaurants and street food, and natural scenery, including the shores of the Boshporus. Since the city is so large, remote workers will find plenty of options for accommodations and shared workspaces. “[Istanbul] has a vibrant expat community, especially in neighborhoods like Cihangir, Nisantasi, and Etiler, in addition to being the site of countless touristic highlights like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Underground Cistern,” Engin Kadaste, vice president and general manager of travel agency Turkey At Its Best , tells Condé Nast Traveler .

Closer to the sea, Izmir is another favorite among digital nomads. This picturesque city is known for its ancient ruins and pristine beaches with nearly 400 miles of coastline. Izmir also has a typical Mediterranean climate, so visitors can expect plenty of sunshine-filled days throughout the year.

Bree Holter, who covers the digital nomad lifestyle on her YouTube channel One Bag One World and was previously based in Turkey for one month, says “the real benefit of digital-nomading in Turkey was getting outside of the major cities.” Exploring less-crowded and more affordable destinations like Izmir was a highlight of her time in Turkey, she tells Traveler , noting the historic coastal city is great for those looking for a slower-paced lifestyle.

If you’re interested in a more lively seaside city, Bodrum might be more your speed, which is world famous for its vibrant nightlife scene . The Aegean coastline gives way to neighborhoods lined with whitewashed buildings, stone-paved streets, and top-notch restaurants. Expect to mingle with jetsetters visiting Bodrum’s glamorous five-star beach resorts and swimming in the city’s azure waters.

Tips for being a respectful digital nomad in Turkey

Given the current exchange rate in Turkey, the cost of living for Americans is dramatically lower than in major cities across the US. In Istanbul, the average monthly cost for a single person is about $542, excluding rent, according to Global Citizen Solutions , a consultancy firm that helps facilitate investments abroad. In a smaller city, like Izmir, the average cost of living drops to about $435 without rent for a single person. Prices for everyday purchases, like food at a restaurant, taking public transportation, or seeing a movie, are generally more affordable, too.

However, it's important to note that the economic situation in Turkey is currently volatile, with national inflation rates climbing to almost 70% and leading to financial difficulties for many Turkish citizens. That's something prospective digital nomads should certainly bear in mind and be sensitive to before arriving in the country, such as prioritizing spending money with local businesses.

In Turkey, most of your monthly budget will likely go towards rent, which can become more expensive in larger cities. “Rent is one of the most significant expenses, but prices remain low,” an analysis by Global Citizen Solutions says. “You can expect to pay $331 monthly on a modest three-bedroom apartment on the Aegean and Mediterranean coastlines.” If you’re interested in living in Istanbul, expect that price to more than double, especially in the more affluent neighborhoods.

Digital nomads should also keep in mind that in some parts of the country, modest dress and behavior might be more common among locals. “Turkey has also become more conservative in the last 20 years, especially in the small cities and towns, so one must be cognizant of this fact and be respectful for their beliefs,” Kadaste says.

Expats from the US shouldn't worry too much about the language barrier in Turkey, as English is widely spoken in most major tourism hubs. “Most tourists who come to Turkey are able to get around the country without knowing the Turkish language, and digital nomads are no exception,” Kadaste says. “Cities like Istanbul, Izmir, and Cappadocia especially often have vendors—hotels, restaurants, shops—who speak English and other languages. That being said, many people in Turkey do not speak English, such as taxi drivers. This situation can be managed by using apps like BiTaksi and Uber to get around.”

Visitors should, of course, try to practice their Turkish—even mere attempts at speaking the language are appreciated by locals. “Turks are an incredibly warm and hospitable people, so they tend to welcome foreigners—especially those who want to spend an extended time living and working in Turkey—with open arms,” Kadaste says. “Small gestures such as learning a few key phrases in Turkish like tesekkur ederim for thank you, and merhaba for hello will earn you instant praise."
