It’s important to note that only the slower, ferry boats have a glass bottom.

They take around 30 minutes to make the crossing from Santa Pola.

Thinking of visiting Alicante with kids ? Located on Spain’s sun-drenched Costa Blanca, Alicante is bursting with life, culture, and activities perfect for families. The city offers an exciting blend of history and beaches.

I visited Alicante for 4 nights before our Mediterranean cruise this summer. Me and my 4-year-old daughter had previously spent a month in Barcelona during the winter, and we love the Balearic islands, so Alicante seemed like the perfect choice.

With direct flights from our local airport Newquay, we could bypass the rail strikes and head straight to Spain, then go on an easy journey to Barcelona to embark on our cruise.

I’ll take you through the best things to do in Alicante with kids, the best places to stay and even where to eat and day trips from Alicante with kids.

Is Alicante Family Friendly?

Absolutely, Alicante is a family-friendly destination. Here’s why:

Alicante boasts numerous clean and safe beaches, perfect for families. Playa del Postiguet is the city’s main beach, with golden sands and calm waters. Lifeguards are present during peak seasons, ensuring safety.

Many beaches also have play areas for children, making them ideal spots for the whole family. I partly chose Alicante due to it being a good Spanish city break destination that also has a beach.

With young kids, it’s often hard to go sightseeing all day so a half day along with a trip to the beach is often the best option.

Attractions

The Santa Barbara castle is a highlight for families. Kids love exploring the ancient fortress, and everyone can appreciate the panoramic views of the city.

There’s also the Museo de Hogueras , a museum dedicated to Alicante’s famous Bonfires of Saint John festival.

There’s plenty to do with kids, from boat trips from the marina to the nearby Tabarca Island , to enjoying a day at the Alicante Miniature Railroad Club where they can see model trains in action as well as many other Alicante museums.

Parks and Open Spaces

The Canalejas Park is one of Alicante’s oldest parks and is home to a variety of flora and fauna, a music stand, and a children’s play area. It’s a lovely place for families to take a stroll. There are also many other playgrounds and green spaces throughout the city like the one in the picture above.

Accommodation

Most hotels and accommodations in Alicante are equipped with family rooms and often provide amenities for children. Some even have pools, play areas and the Melia also has a kids club.

When is the Best Time to Visit Alicante?

Consider visiting during May or September. While the summer months from June to August pull in tourists with the allure of the sun, the transitional months offer a balmy climate without the usual bustle. And although winter is mild, it’s from December to February that you can expect a slight chill in the air.

We visited Alicante in late July, but it got too hot at points to be sightseeing. I’ve visited other areas in Spain at these times of year and it’s been perfect.

How to Get to Alicante

Nestled along the southeastern coast of Spain, reaching Alicante is both convenient and easy.

Airports and Arriving by Plane

Alicante-Elche Airport is the gateway to the city. It serves a number of European cities and is very busy during the summerr due to Alicante being the gateway to Benidorm! If you’re flying internationally, you may have to fly into Barcelona then get a connecting flight or train to Alicante.

Travelling to Alicante by Train

Trains weaving through Spain’s scenic landscapes, operated by Renfe, connect Alicante with cities like Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. After visiting Alicante we spent almost 5 hours travelling to Barcelona and it was a hastle free experience.

Driving to Alicante with Kids

Driving along Spain’s coast is a sensory treat. As you approach Alicante, the roads promise well-signposted routes, ensuring a seamless journey. Many hire car companies operate in Alicante offering a great way to see the Alicante province and further afield.

Coaches to Alicante

Most of the coaches to Alicante are run by ALSA bus. We enjoyed an easy and affordable journey on a day trip to Benidorm. Tickets can be bought online or in the machines at stations up to 10 minutes before departure.

Coaches also run to major cities like Valencia, Murcia and Barcelona but can often take longer than travelling by train.

Where to Stay in Alicante with Kids

Meliá alicante – luxury.

Meliá Alicante has got a super spot between the beach and the city’s marina. It’s been around for about 50 years, so they know their stuff.

The rooms? They’re modern and have great views, either of the sea or the cool Santa Bárbara Castle up on the hill. There is a large pool as well as amazing restauraunts . There’s also a special club for the kids age 6+. Best part? You’re super close to all the cool spots in town.

AC Hotel by Marriott Alicante – Mid-Range

📍 LOCATION: Near Alicante Bus Station | ✅ Book It

The AC Hotel by Marriott in Alicante is in a handy location. The rooms are fresh, and modern, and even have some local artwork.

Families? You’ll get plenty of space. The rooftop pool’s a hit – you can see across the whole city from up there. We stayed here, and we totally loved it.

Oh, and you won’t want to miss the food; it’s a tasty mix of local and international dishes. The pool also has a rooftop bar serving delicious tapas and cocktails. It did have more of an adult vibe but there were other children staying.

Breakfast was also delicious. There is a large spread of everything you could want as well as amazing coffee.

Ibis Alicante – Budget

📍 LOCATION: Between Alicante Airport and the city centre

If you’re looking for something wallet-friendly but still comfy for the family, Ibis Alicante is a top pick. Close to the airport and with views over the sea, it’s super convenient.

The rooms are neat, simple, and have everything you need. They also offer a breakfast buffet to start your day right. Alicante is a short bus ride away or a quick drive. I had this hotel booked before rebooking the Marriott when I had saved more. We would have been happy here.

The adjoining promenade offers a range of cafes and eateries for refreshments. This is the beach that the Melia is located on. There’s also a great children’s playground and many of the city’s best bars and cafes overlook the beach.

Getting Around Alicante

Taxis in Alicante: For those looking for direct and convenient travel, taxis in Alicante are easily available. They offer a more private means of transport and can be hailed from designated taxi stands or booked via phone apps. We got a taxi from the Marriott to the train station, and it was just 5 euro.

Day Trips from Alicante

Alicante, while captivating, is but a gateway to the broader wonders of the Costa Blanca:

A popular resort town, Benidorm offers a combination of beautiful beaches, promenades, and a lively atmosphere. Its modern skyline juxtaposed with old town charm provides an interesting blend for exploration.

How to Get There: It’s approximately a 40-minute drive or you can opt for the tram, which takes about an hour from Alicante. We got the ALSA bus which took just under 1 hour.

A gem on the Costa Blanca, Altea is famed for its historic old town, which sits perched on a hilltop offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Cobbled streets lined with whitewashed buildings lead to the iconic blue-domed church, providing an atmospheric backdrop for leisurely strolls. The town also boasts a picturesque seafront and art-rich ambiance.

How to Get There: Altea is roughly a 50-minute drive from Alicante. Alternatively, take a tram for a scenic route that lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Tabarca Island

The tranquillity of Tabarca Island stands in pleasant contrast to the mainland’s hustle and bustle. Declared a marine reserve, the island offers pristine beaches, perfect for diving or snorkelling, coupled with a rich history reflected in its architecture and museums.

How to Get There: Regular ferries are available from Alicante’s port, with the journey to Tabarca taking around an hour.

Rio Safari Elche

From Alicante, a straightforward drive of approximately 25-30 minutes leads to Rio Safari Elche. Parking facilities are comprehensive and conveniently located.

Pola Park, Santa Pola

Pola Park in Santa Pola, just a short drive from Alicante, is a haven of entertainment spread across 24,000 square meters.

Established in 1996, Pola Park boasts well-maintained gardens, over 20 diverse activities ranging from bouncy castles and mini-golf to thrilling rides and a panoramic 60m high tower.

How to Get There: There are regular buses from Alicante to nearby the park. Driving or a taxi will take 20-30 minutes.

Aqua Natura in Benidorm is a water park that’s perfect for everyone! Ready for a rush? Try the big slides. Ever dreamt of being a mermaid or a triton? Here, you can put on a special tail fin and swim just like one. And if you’re looking for something truly special, you can even snorkel with sea lions.

For thrill-seekers, there’s the La Cresta slide where you’ll feel like you’re floating in air. If you prefer waves, head over to the wave pool. And for the little ones? They’ll have a blast in the fun water playground.

How to Get There: Frequent bus services run between Alicante and Benidorm. Upon arriving in Benidorm, local buses or taxis can whisk you to Aqua Natura within minutes. A 45-minute drive from Alicante via the AP-7 will land you at Aqua Natura’s gates. Parking is ample, ensuring a hassle-free experience for those arriving by car.

After spending 4 days in Alicante, we could have stayed longer. It’s such a good starting point for day trips that you could stay a few weeks. Accommodation choice is crucial when travelling with kids as it can make or break the trip.

Located between Benidorm and Cartagena, Alicante is a beautiful seaside Spanish destination worth to visit with the family. Part of the famous Costa Blanca facing Algiers in North Africa, Alicante has plenty of things to do for your kids .

In this article, I have shortlisted the best activities you can do with your children in Alicante including an amusement park and a safari park.

Alicante is among the most populated cities in Easter Spain with over 330,000 inhabitants and is also the name of the region that covers Denia from the North down to La Manga in the South.

The town has very little historical buildings due to the fact it suffered lots of bombings during the Spanish Civil War. Fortunately, the city was rebuilt successfully in the 50s and the 60s.

Families love the seaside of Alicante with long sandy beaches and of course its warm weather all year round. Beware that in the Summer, temperature can reach up to 30°C on average (42°C was recorded in August 2022).

So are you ready to discover the best things to do in Alicante with kids ? Vamos!

1. El mundo de Los Ninos

If you are looking for a place to keep the kids happy in Alicante, El Mundo de Los Ninos is a safe bet. This amusement park is located nearby the port of Alicante and offers lots of rides suitable for young children.

Kids can go crazy by jumping up and down on the bouncy castle or have fun in the ball pit. There are traditional attractions too such as a carrousel, a mini train or Mario karts.

You might even be interested to play a round of miniature golf and try competing against your children.

Overall, this park is a top attraction to do at anytime during your stay in Alicante with your children.

2. The Ocean Race Museum

Originally open in 2012, the Ocean Race Museum is among the best family friendly museums in Alicante. As its name suggests, the venue is solely dedicated to the marine world with a focus on sailing races and equipment.

Entrance to the museum is free so no hard feeling if your family is overwhelmed with the topic of sailing. Maybe have a look at their website to check guided tours which costs only 3€ per person. That way, your family will be even more tempted to learn about this sport and great water activity.

To make your visit extra special, there is a virtual racing boat simulator called The Ride. There is also a nice café on the 1st floor with a nice view over the Mediterranean sea.

3. Merlin Park

Just a stone’s throw away from the Lo Morant park, you can find the indoor softplay attraction called Merlin Park. Inside, your kids will be spoilt with lots of things to do including gigantic bouncy castle with slides, mini ball pit and lots of space for parents to sit down and enjoy their favourite drink.

Of course, this place is for children having a blast so don’t expect to chill out at the café. The venue will be noisy with kids screaming everywhere. But that’s the point, isn’t it?

On weekends and during school holidays, the place can be of course quite busy with birthdays celebrated there as well. But no to worry, your children will easily blend in even if they don’t speak Spanish.

4. MARQ Archaeological Museum of Alicante

Featured as the European Museum of the Year in 2004, the Archaeological Museum of Alicante or locally known as MARQ is a top activity to do in Alicante with kids.

First, the museum is telling great stories about how Alicante and its surroundings evolved through 7,000 years of history. To make the experience more engaging, the museum has lots of audio video features so your kids can learn at their pace different facts about the city.

Overall, families have praised how modern and well maintained this museum is. At the moment, MARQ has a temporary exhibition around Qin and Han Chinese dynasties that looks absolutely fabulous.

So make sure you have some time in your busy schedule in Alicante to pay a visit to MARQ.

5. El Palmeral Park

The beautiful El Palmeral Park is a great outdoor activity to do with family in Alicante with lots of space to walk around surrounded by palm trees. You could also plan a nice picnic with the kids over there as you can find benches and tables within the premises.

The park is really well decorated with waterfalls and large lakes where you can hire a small boat. Kids will enjoy a decent playground as well.

If you have the munchies, there is a convenient café called El Palmeral (you can’t guess it) that serves tapas and sandwiches called bocadillos.

Best of all, this place is colourful that you will snap many photos with your kids to bring back home lots of memories. Highly recommended all year round!

6. Santa Barbara Castle

Without a doubt, Santa Barbara Castle is the most majestic historical building in Alicante that is perched above the town. The area of the castle is free to visit and makes great walks.

You will wander around different fortification walls and have access to the inside of the fortress as well.

Of course, be aware that going up to the Santa Barbara fortress involves steep steps so make sure you don’t miss taking the elevator up (if it’s not broken on your day of visit)

Once you arrive a the top of building, you will be amazed with spectacular views over Alicante and the sea with lots of photos to feed your Insta for sure.

7. Parque Lo Morant

Another stunning park not to miss in Alicante with the kids is Lo Morant park. The design of this green space is very symmetrical with lots of square ponds. Little ones can play at the playground whilst you shade away from the scorching sun underneath the palm trees.

For sporty kids, the park offers a tennis court and a football pitch so perfect if you need the children to release some energy before heading for lunch or dinner.

8. Museo de les Fogueres

Here is another free entry museum worth mentioning on the best things to do in Alicante with kids. Museo de Hogueras is keeping indoor different artefacts and status that have been used during the Bonfires of St John festival.

These funny characters are called ninots in Spanish and depict funny original scenes of traditional life. This is probably the most authentic place where you can learn about this must celebrated event happening every year at the end of June.

Most of these huge characters are made of wood and cardboard and they are usually burnt on the night of San Juan (hence the name bonfires). Locals also go crazy with little fireworks on the streets. During this time, the streets of Alicante feel like a noise competition between different neighbourhoods. Fun but noisy, you have been warned for sensitive ears!

9. Central Market

Fortunately, lots of Spanish cities have kept their traditional food markets intact and the Central Market is a good example. Situated on Avenida Alfonso el Sabio, the building itself is imposing and offers different food stalls.

If you would like to taste local cured ham and exceptional cheeses, you can’t miss going to Central Market.

Have a look also at some sit down cafes restaurants where you can have tapas with a drink instead of going to a traditional restaurant.

Usually the market closes in the afternoon after 2pm so plan your visit accordingly with a preference early in the morning to avoid too much crowd.

10. A day at the beach

Best of all, Alicante is famously known for lovely long white sandy beaches. So whilst you can venture around Alicante and find more secluded spots, I thought to highlight two of the best central beaches in Alicante suitable for families.

San Juan Playa

San Juan beach is definitely the most popular beach with a long stretch of sands so visitors can really feel the space and spread out. Obviously, you will find showers, toilets and lots of cafes and restaurants nearby. The city of Alicante is very good at keeping the beach nice and clean.

You can also hire beach equipment with loungers and umbrella to spend the day comfortably at the beach with the family.

Playa del Postiguet

Another great beach to consider with the family is Postiguet situated in the heart of Alicante. During the summer, the place can be crowded but it is definitely worth to check out if you don’t want to take the car or walk too much from your hotel or apartment.

To avoid the crowd, you can head to the beach late afternoon before having a late dinner at one of the restaurant nearby.

11. Walk to the Port

Now, in my opinion one of the best options to see the sunset in Alicante with the kids is to walk towards the harbour. Once you have reached the port, you can admire all the different boats parked there.

The port of Alicante is also home to many restaurants and bars. So a good idea to look up where you can have a nice dinner with the kids as well.

During the day, you might spot some big cruise ships from MSC cruises or ferries that can go to Algeria towards the Port of Oran.

12. Family Park

Ideally located on San Juan beach, the Family Park is very popular with local families as well as visitors. Young kids will be able to have fun for 2 to 3 hours and hop on different rides.

Expect to find at the Family Park fun attractions like mini karts, trampolines, small Ferris wheel and plenty more.

The venue sells a bracelet for 17€ that gives you access to almost all attractions with unlimited time during one day.

13. Day trip to Tabarca Island

Tired and bored of staying in Alicante? I have got you covered with a day excursion to the island of Tabarca. This place is tiny and is the ideal location to practise snorkelling and relax by the see.

Kontiki offers return journey from Alicante to the island. Check below the glass bottom boat that is worth to take with the family. In the summer, the return can be taken up until 6.30pm so plenty of time to enjoy the island of Tabarca.

Sounds like a perfect day out away from Alicante, don’t you think?

14. Rio Safari Elche (+Splash Park)

Since we are on the subject of a great day out near Alicante, Rio Safari is a lovely attraction located in Elche, South of Alicante. The park is a great place to meet lots animal such as leopards, lions or pink flamingos.

Whilst the park can be visited on foot, the venue also offers an opportunity to explore the park with a train equipped with audio guide. The journey lasts about 15 minutes and runs several times per day.

When sunny and warm days arrive (usually in May), the park also adds a Splash park with lots of fun water rides for small children and grown ups. So it is worth to purchase combined tickets to access both areas of the attraction.

Rio Safari is featured among the best kids friendly attractions in Costa Blanca.

15. Pola Park

Last but not least, if you are venturing around Santa Pola near Alicante, you can bring your kids to Pola Park. This outdoor amusement park is full of small rides suitable for young children.

With over 30 attractions, Pola Park is probably best appreciated towards the end of the day after dinner if you plan to go bed late like every Spanish family in the summer. This fun park has traditional carrousels, roller coasters, mini train and plenty more for your family to enjoy.

Beware that some rides involves getting splashed with water, so hopefully your clothes will dry out quickly!

Alicante is a great location, whether for a family holiday or just a day out. This seaside city has so much to offer for all ages, you will have plenty to keep you busy.

We know what it’s like though when you go on holiday with children and need to keep coming up with ideas to keep them entertained…when all you really want to do is lie on the beach!

Is Alicante worth visiting with children?

Alicante is a great city to visit with children, whether for a family holiday or just for a day out. There’s plenty to do for all ages, it’s not as busy as some of the bigger and more well known cities, and is certainly more affordable than the likes of Madrid and Barcelona.

A day out at a museum

There are lots of things to do in Alicante for families, and a good place to start is at one of the city’s many mueums. There are lots of great museums in Alicante, covering all aspects of the city, the history of the area, and a few more unusual things.

If your children are interested in archaeology, the Museo Arqueologico de Alicante , also known as MARQ, has some fun themed areas and interactive displays.

Every year in the city center giant, colourful floats and papier mache figures are set on fire as part of the famous San Juan festivals. You can see some examples of these amazing figures in the Museo de Fogueras .

Museo the Ocean Race is a fun (& free) interactive exhibition that covers more than 45 years of history of the world’s toughest sailing competition.

Visit the castle

Children will love a trip to the medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara , which is set up on the on the top of Benacantil Mountain, 166 metres above sea level.

Here you can learn all about the history of both Alicante and the surrounding areas. The castle is one of Spain’s largest mediaeval fortresses and dates back to the 9th century when the city was under Muslim control.

As well as some phenomenal views from the top, there is plenty of places both inside and out to explore and have a run around.

The castle is free to enter, with around €2 per person for the lift.

Relax in El Palmeral park

If you’re searching for things to do with kids in Alicante, you’ll probably be looking for a park or two to let them run off some energy. One of our favourite places in Alicante to visit, El Palmeral is a park just outside of the city center. Full of palm trees, waterfalls, lagoons, and several playparks, this is a lovely place to visit and get away from the busy city.

There are picnic benches if you want to take lunch with you, as well as a kiosk serving snacks, drinks and ice creams.

The park is completely free with plenty of parking outside.

Take a walk down Mushroom Street

Not quite a day or afternoon out, but worth a look if you are wandering around Alicante with kids. Mushroom Street, or Calle de las Setas, is a fun, colourful street in the city centre that looks as if it has come straight out of a children’s book.

The floor is painted yellow and green and there are tall mushroom statues the whole way down, as well as a few little mushroom houses you can go inside as well as slides.

Along this street you’ll find lots of delicious cake shops, ice cream parlours and tapas bars so it’s a good spot to stop for a quick refreshment too.

Explore Parque Lo Morant

For those of you visiting Alicante with toddlers or small children, you are probably looking for somewhere with a lot of space for them to run free! In the north west of the city you’ll find the largest green zone for leisure and recreation in Alicante. This landscaped park includes a playground, skatepark, amphitheater, cafe, and areas for petanque, croquet and other games.

The ideal place for the kids to run around and let off steam!

Take a glass bottom boat trip to Tabarca Island

A really fun thing to do in Alicante for families is to jump on a glass bottom boat. From the port in Alicante there are lots of different boat trips on offer. You can sail away along the coast on a Catamaran cruise or jump on board a glass bottom boat to visit nearby Tabarca Island.

Tabarca Island used to home to pirates so is sure to be a fascinating day out for children, and the glass bottom boat will keep them entertained on the journey of approximately 40 minutes.

Play on the beach

You can’t have a list of things to do in Alicante without mentioning the beach, after all there is an impressive 14 beaches and coves to choose from!

Along the many beaches in Alicante you will find plenty of play parks, as well as pedalos and inflatables in the sea, to keep kids amused. You won’t be short of restaurants and cafes either, there are lots of places to get out of the sun and grab a bite to eat.

Take a trip on the tram

From the center of Alicante you can jump on the tram and head along the coast towards Benidorm . This is a great opportunity to sea the coastline as you go along, and you can stop in some of the fantastic seaside towns such as Altea or Villajoyosa. If you want to go further than Benidorm you can do, you just need to get off and change trams.

Have a day out at a waterpark, theme park or zoo

If you head out of Alicante and towards Benidorm there are lots of attractions to choose from for a really fun day out.

Terra Mitica is one of the top Costa Blanca attractions. This theme park is divided into five themed zones: Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iberia, and the Islands. There are lots of rides for all ages, as well as a splash area, and various shows throughout the day.

Mundomar is an animal park in Benidorm with lots of different species of mammals, birds and reptiles. There are lots of animal displays including parrots and dolphins, you can join in with feeding some of the animals, and there’s a great playpark too.

Aqualandia is one of the best water parks on the Costa Blanca and is located right next to Mundo Mar (they share the same carpark). It’s a great waterpark for some family fun near Alicante to keep you cool. Europe’s highest standing slide and the world’s highest capsule slide can both be found here.

Take them to soft play

Located next to the port of Alicante, El Mundo de Los Ninos is a soft play and fairground with lots of fun rides suitable for children of all ages. This park is free to enter and then you buy tickets for the things you want to go on, including soft play, dodgems, merry go round, trampolines and more. The park is open during the afternoon and evening, and parents can sit at the cafe with a drink and a snack while the kids play.

One Week in Alicante with Kids: Our Costa Blanca Holidays

Since I really enjoyed this one week in Alicante with the kids, let me share with you some of the best places from this epic family trip to Costa Blanca.

Our Holidays in Costa Blanca

As you might already know – I´ve been an expat in the Valencian Community for the past 10+ years, so exploring local hidden gems via day trips has always been a huge part of my Spanish weekends . However, I should admit that I have mostly had my eyes set on Valencia and Castellon.

If you are not familiar with the region of the Valencian Community (or La Comunidad Valenciana in Spanish) yet, let me highlight that it consists of the 3 Spanish provinces – Alicante, Valencia, and Castellon. While the last two have been featured on the blog multiple times, there´s still a gap with the Alicante travel content which I am about to fill up in the nearest future.

Why visit Alicante

What I have always loved about Alicante is the fact that it combines a traditional Mediterranean getaway (the very same you can enjoy on Ibiza , Formentera , Mallorca , or even the Greek Islands , Cyprus , and Malta ) with an interesting sightseeing agenda, traditional Spanish food , and numerous road trip ideas .

Spending holidays on the Spanish islands definitely adds some relaxed vibes to any vacation, but at the same time, your sightseeing plans are always limited. While in Alicante you can easily rent a car (sometimes even take a train or bus) and visit the nearest Spanish regions via day trips.

Also, I have always felt like Alicante is one of the best places to enjoy Spain with kids. While the region is obviously well-established on the tourist track (and I have a thing for Undiscovered Spain ), somehow I loved our week in Alicante more than our trip to Cambrils / Catalonia and Costa Brava Road Trip (both took place during the off-season and were packed with tourists).

The coastal area of Alicante is called Costa Blanca , and it´s full of beautiful calas (small shell-shaped bays). But in this post, I won´t cover the Alicante beaches, as this time we were mostly interested in sightseeing (after our relaxing weekends in Benicassim at Costa Azahar ).

My trips to Alicante

Except for this week in Alicante, the rest of my numerous visits to the province were one-day stops on the road to other Spanish regions. Let me highlight here my Alicante travel history:

• 2015: had a quick stop in Calpe to see Peñon de Ifach and discover its legend
• 2016: spent a day in Alicante to catch a flight to Iceland
• 2017: enjoyed an afternoon in Benidorm on the way to Andalusia and Algarve
• 2018: made a stop at Torrevieja (to see the otherworldly landscape of the Pink Lake ) on the road to Mojacar and Almeria
• 2019: celebrated New Year´s Eve with kids in a hotel SH Villa Gadea / Altea
• 2020: made a stop at the secret vintage museum of Ibi while heading to Murcia
• 2021: visited the stunning gardens near Denia to get on a ferry to Formentera

So, when you put it all down this way – you probably get it why it took me so long to plan an actual trip to Alicante and Costa Blanca . Somehow, I was unintentionally ending up there at least once per year. Therefore, I felt way less excited about spending a week in Alicante, than heading to the Spanish Pyrenees or Northern Spain .

This week in Alicante

Nevertheless, on this Costa Blanca holiday I was aiming to visit Alicante for the region itself (and it won´t be my last trip, for sure). We booked a hotel in Alicante city and traveled across the province to discover new places every single day. One week in Alicante with kids

Day 1 – alicante, santa barbara castle.

There´s no better way to start your week in Alicante than to get a first panoramic glimpse of the city from Santa Barbara Castle .

This place has always been of great strategic importance due to its hilltop location. The castle got its name thanks to Prince Alfonso de Castilla , who had conquered it from the Arabs on St.Barbara´s Day. While this castle won´t make it to my list of top Spanish dreamy castles , the views were undeniably stunning. I also loved the fact that the entrance was free (which makes it a great stop for those who are in Spain on a budget).

Additionally, at Santa Barbara Castle there are lots of interesting events one can enjoy – from guided tours and indoor exhibitions to culinary experiences and concerts. You can check the 2023 agenda here .

The city of Alicante

Another popular stop in Alicante is Explanda de España , a pedestrian walkway near the waterfront surrounded by palm trees. After an enjoyable walk and lunch, we headed to Kinepolis cinema to relax and watch an animated movie with the kids. By the way, they usually have movies in English every week (which is not very typical in Spain).

Day 2 – Benidorm and Terra Mitica

There´s no week in Alicante without visiting Benidorm, the Spanish skyscraper capital. The city is known as one of the main Spanish touristic hubs with 27 buildings above 100 meters.

Well, you know how much I love avoiding crowds… But this time we had a good reason to stop by, as it was the first opening weekend at Terra Mitica . You literally can´t travel to Alicante with kids and ignore its biggest theme park. During this week in Alicante, we did not spend time in the city of Benidorm (as we previously visited it a few times ).

However, if you enjoy an occasional citybreak, don´t mind meeting new people, and love visiting trendy restaurants and nightclubs – you´ll love Benidorm. Don´t miss Balcon del Mediterraneo , Iglesia de San Jaime , Cala de Tio Ximo , and Parque de Elche .

What I also do want to check out next time are the Antiques and flea markets of Benidorm, since they are famous in Spain (I´ll share the details with you as soon as I get a chance to visit).

Although, if I were to compare Terra Mitica to other popular Spanish theme parks – Parque Warner Madrid and PortAventura , I´d have to admit that I liked Terra Mitica less. While in June it was still ok in terms of waiting lines (way better than PortAventura ), the rides and park were a bit old-fashioned. Here, I´d have to admit that I´m especially picky since my trip to Orlando in the States.

Anyway, my kids would not agree with me on this one. Our oldest daughter adores stories about Egypt and Greece , and Terra Mitica had rides and decorations related to both. Therefore, my kids were sold right from first minute.

Although, next time we plan to make a stop at another popular spot in Alicante with kids – Magic Robin Hood . But for this week in Alicante, I honestly felt like visiting two theme parks would be too much (obviously for me only, not for the kids).

Day 3 – Novelda – Sax – Villena

With my well-known passion for Spanish villages , and magical castles , I try to add a few to all of my Road trip itineraries across Spain .

For this week in Alicante, I´ve set my eyes on the castles of Sax and Atalaya : the first one is known for the spectacular hilltop setting, but the second does not actually stay behind any of the top Spanish dreamy castles .

As castles often involve interesting Spanish legends – my kids always enjoy playing princesses and dragons inside. Even if there´s no official mysterious story related to a castle – we simply invent it, like it was with the unknown Castle of Gaibiel in Castellon .

Before visiting the castles, we made a quick stop on the road at Novelda to see the peculiar local church Santuari de Santa Maria Magdalena , and the tiny museum Casa Museo Modernista .

Both places were really unique. However, there was a no-picture policy inside the museum, which I absolutely did not get. I mean, no-flash is understandable. But isn´t the aim of any touristy place to promote itself online better in order to get more visitors? This brings more jobs, businesses, and investments to the nearby area.

That´s to say, lots of people inside the museum were still secretly taking pictures despite the rule, so I couldn´t see the point of their secrecy.

The Sax Castle has Islamic origins, like many other Spanish ancient buildings across the Alicante region. It was conquered by the Crown of Aragon in 1239. There´s not much to see inside, but the views were nice. In order to visit Sax Castle, you´ll need to book in advance one of the 3 daily slots .

Castle of Alataya in Villena

Another place I really enjoyed during this week in Alicante was the Atalaya Castle in Villena .

It is also known as Castle of the Pies Negros (e.g. black feet) or simply Villena Castle. This place was once a military building of Arab origin but got renovated and extended in the XVth century. Atalaya Castle is also home to the Treasure of Villena, a collection of 59 gold, silver, iron, and amber pieces dating back to the Bronze Age. It is the biggest gold tableware found in Spain and the second biggest in Europe.

You can visit the Atalaya Castle with a guide or on your own ( book here ). This place is definitely one of the hidden gems of the Valencia region .

Day 4 – Elche and Rio Safari

While Elche often gets overshadowed by its famous neighbors, Alicante and Benidorm, the city is home to the largest palm grove in Europe. You can check more photos from my visit in this post .

The origins of Palm Grove, also called El Palmeral , date back to the Xth century and the Arab times in Spain. You can´t miss Parque Municipal (e.g. The Town Park of Elche) which is literally one of the most beautiful gardens in the whole of Spain .

After a pleasant stroll in the park, we headed to Elche´s Cathedral Basilica de Santa Maria . The views from the top were simply stunning, but as it usually happens, there were many stairs in-between. So, it might not be a match for kids or seniors – but the rest should not miss out.

Rio Safari Elche

In the afternoon, we decided to take the kids to Rio Safari Elche . You might already know that I´m not a fan of zoos from my Tenerife post . But I´m usually outnumbered, as my husband and kids always want to go. So, for now, I settle for explaining to the little ones why I do not enjoy the zoos myself (without any visible comprehension from their side, at least for now).

Day 5 – Villajoyosa and Altea

You can´t spend a week in Alicante and miss Costa Blanca´s iconic coastal towns. Both Villajoyosa and Altea are absolute must-stops in the Province of Alicante.

With its cute white-washed houses Altea embodies the best of the Mediterranean lifestyle. This small town is locally known as the Cupula of the Mediterranean, due to the striking blue dome of the town’s main church.

Altea is very touristy in the summer peak season and hard to find parking spots. Therefore we made it a quick morning stop and headed to Villajoyosa .

Villajoyosa

Located a few kilometers south of the famous Benidorm, Villajoyosa is known for its lovely sandy beach and colorful fishing houses, running along the seafront. It´s one of the prettiest small towns of the Costa Blanca and one of the most colorful villages in Spain .

But there´s even more to the story.

Many call Villajoyosa one of the most beautiful small towns in Spain , as well as one of the top places to enjoy the  winter sun in Spain .

Fans of local food souvenirs will be happy to find out that Villajoyosa is also known as the Spanish Chocolate City. All thanks to its 3 chocolate factories:  El Valor ,  Chocolates Perez , and  Calvileño  (the first two offer free guided tours).

Once exploring the neighborhood, don´t miss La Vila Museum. If you like  Medieval fairs in Spain  – late July is a great time to visit Villajoyosa , as the  Moros y Christianos  festival will be taking place.

Also, Villajoyosa is a great destination for kayaking tours in Spain .

Day 6 – Aitana Safari

Aitana Safari was definitely a highlight of this week in Alicante for the kids.

This place offers a unique experience to go on a safari without heading to faraway Africa. You access the park with your own car and drive around while making stops in places where the staff is present (otherwise you are not allowed to leave your car). They also organize private tours, for those seeking a more exclusive wildlife experience. 

Aitana Safari Park is one of our current favorites with kids in Spain . Such a great place to learn and experience more about wildlife and to see some exotic animals from the comfort and safety of your own car.

Day 7 – Guadalest

Due to its unique natural setting, the small town of Guadalest deserves its place on the list of the most beautiful villages in Spain . While this small town is touristy, it has lots of tiny museums to keep one busy for a day: Nativity Scene and Dollhouse Museum, the Museum of Micro-miniatures, the Museum of Salt and Pepper Shakers, the Collection of Historic Vehicles, the Ethnological Museum, and the Medieval Museum. 

However, most of the visitors definitely come to Guadalest for the stunning views.

Such a great itinerary. You’re right about Alicante looking like a mixture of some Mediterranean places. Some of your photos could’ve easily been taken in places like Mallorca or Malta. Thanks for sharing, I’m adding it to my future Spanish road trip itinerary.

Lots of great ideas here! This part of Spain hasn’t been on my radar yet but I will definitely have to travel there sometime. Love those castles!

Spain has never really been of interest to me. But after reading this I really want to visit Guadalest. It looks so beautiful!

Villajoyosa is pretty, has a beach, AND is known for chocolate?! Sounds perfect to me!

The Perfect 2, 3 or 4 Days in Alicante Itinerary

On Spain’s southern Mediterranean coastline lies the vibrant city of Alicante, capital of the Alicante region and a historic port city. With its historic centre, inviting beaches, dazzling harbour and exciting nightlife, you can easily spend 2, 3 or 4 days in Alicante, and our Alicante itinerary will take you through all of the hotspots.

How Many Days in Alicante?

The region of Alicante and the Costa Blanca in general is full of wonderful places to see, including the beautiful seaside towns of Gandia, Javea, Denia, Calpe and Altea to name a few, so you can happily spend a two-week holiday in Alicante and see something new every day.

If you’re wondering how many days to spend in Alicante city, it depends on what you’re interested in and whether you want a tight Alicante itinerary or prefer to explore the city at a relaxed pace.

You need at least 2 days in Alicante to see the main attractions and bake in the sunshine on the beautiful beach, but over 3 days in Alicante, you can spend more time wandering the winding streets of the old town, taking in the views from the hilltop castle and include an activity such as a catamaran cruise or a guided food tour.

If you have 4 days, you can take a day trip further afield to the nature reserves South of the city, the more isolated beaches, another coastal town like Villajoyosa, or the surprisingly green city of Elche.

Getting To & Around Alicante

Arriving in Alicante from other European cities is very easy thanks to the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport just a 15-minute drive, or 30-minute bus ride on the L1, from the city centre. You can fly directly to Alicante Airport from many locations across Europe and beyond. You can organise a transfer here.

Alicante Train Station is very central and easy to reach, however, the Spanish train service is limited so if you’re coming from another country, the easiest, shortest and cheapest way to arrive in Alicante is by plane.

From Madrid , a train takes 2 hours 30 minutes, while it takes 5 hours from Barcelona , and 2 hours from Valencia . You can view train schedules here.

Or, if you’re travelling around Spain or coming from a nearby coastal city like Cartagena or Torrevieja, you can use the bus service Alsa for routes between most cities and towns in Spain. It’s cheaper than the train and can often be easier, but finding the bus stops can be difficult so check the app and if in doubt, ask around – taxi drivers are particularly helpful!

Alicante Bus Station is located on the coast, West of the harbour and just a 15-minute walk from the centre or 10 minutes on the L24 bus. You can view bus schedules here.

Within Alicante centre, you won’t need to use public transport as the city centre neighbours the old town with both Santa Barbara Castle and Saint Fernando Castle within walking distance.

What’s more, the beach and harbour are just a stone’s throw from the centre so you can easily enjoy your time in Alicante completely on foot. If you’re less mobile, there is an extensive bus and tram service in and around Alicante and a lift taking you from the old town up to Santa Barbara Castle.

2, 3 or 4-Day Alicante Itinerary

Day 1 – alicante old town.

On the first day of your trip, discover the old town, El Barrio de Santa Cruz, and all of its hidden gems, finishing your day in one of the many restaurants and bars of the winding mediaeval streets. You can take a walking tour to learn more about the history of city.

Saint Nicholas Cathedral

We start our route through the old town of Alicante at the Saint Nicholas Cathedral due to its proximity to the city centre, making it easy to reach, however, you can change your route depending on the location of your accommodation, or simply wander the streets and marvel at the glorious buildings tucked away behind each corner.

The Concatedral de San Nicolás is one of the oldest buildings in the area, as a large part of the city was destroyed after heavy bombardments that destroyed 90% of the city in 1691, although the cathedral remained intact.

The architecture is very simple, with few decorations, indicative of the Herrerian style of architecture prominent in Spain in the 17th century, however, the original façade of black marble and the Gothic cloister from the 15th century are sights to behold, not to mention the blue domed roofs, reminiscent of a mosque that previously stood in its place.

Town Hall and Discovered City

A short walk from the Saint Nicholas Cathedral takes you to the remarkable Ayuntamiento, or Alicante Town Hall. With a lot of it built after the destruction of the city, the new Town Hall sits on the site of the former town hall, displaying a great example of Spanish Baroque architecture, which you can see from Plaza de la Santísima Faz on one side or Plaza del Ayuntamiento on the other.

At Christmas and Easter, the Town Hall is decorated and there are large displays in this square, making it a must-see place on your Alicante itinerary.

You can visit the Town Hall for free from 9 am to 2 pm in Winter and 9 am to 1 pm in Summer, to see the Salón Azul, a large ornate room designed for Queen Isabel I of Castile, who united Castile and Aragon to form the Kingdom of Spain after her marriage to King Ferdinand II of Aragon in 1469.

Across each of the rooms allowing access to visitors, you can see fantastic works of art, including those from Alicante-native Gastón Castelló

Next to the Town Hall, although accessible from the Town Hall building itself according to the same opening hours, is the so-called “Discovered City”.

A small area, this underground museum showcases some of the ruins from the Muslim reign over the Iberian Peninsula from 711 to 1492, including the former defensive wall built in the 1200s to defend against the attacking Christian Kingdom from the North.

Santa María Basilica

A few hundred metres down the same road, in Plaza de la Santa María, is the incredible basilica of the same name. Like the Saint Nicholas Cathedral and many churches throughout Spain, this basilica was formerly a mosque but was converted into a Gothic cathedral after the northern Christian forces took over the city.

Aside from its ornate entrance below two towers, the building itself is very square and plain, however, you can see the Gothic arches inside leading to the intricately carved golden altar.

From the street outside, you can also see the cannon shots from the 13th-century bombardment as the mosque had been built into the city’s defensive wall.

Contemporary Art Museum

Facing the same square as the Basílica de Santa María, in the oldest civil building in Alicante, is MACA – the Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante.

Here you can find many amazing works of 20th-century art by revered artists such as Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Ernst and Bacon lit wonderfully in the large open rooms of the 17th-century building, as well as temporary exhibitions, a library and an art workshop.

If you prefer a different sort of art museum, then you can also opt to visit the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts which houses plenty of beautiful artwork, as well.

Known for its nightlife, the Santa Cruz Quarter is perfect for wandering the small streets at the end of your first day in Alicante to find a place to stop for a drink or order some tapas or lounge out on a large terrace sipping your drink. You can even take a tapas tour if you prefer to explore with a guide.

Try a rosemary-infused Xabiga Ale or Antara made with tiger nuts; these craft beers hail from Greater Alicante’s seaside towns of Javea and Xativa respectively and can be found in some local cervecerías.

Or, tuck into some tapas classics, patatas bravas, prawns in garlic, croquetas and albondigas in restaurants, such as Taberna Iberica.

The spacious restaurant has a classical guitarist and also serves a number of paellas and fideuàs – similar to paella but with short spaghetti-like noodles – although these dishes require a minimum of two people.

Keep in mind that these are typically lunch dishes in Spain, so it’s worth planning your paella (or fideuà) feast for the afternoon rather than the evening.

If you’re on a budget, you can find many cheap cervecerías around the city which do deals of a plate of tapas with a caña (a small draft beer) for a couple of euros.

Day 2 – Castles & Beaches

2 days in Alicante will enable you to spend as much time as you please exploring the mediaeval hilltop castle, with numerous activities to engage in, before relaxing on the beach in the afternoon and heading to the port for some delicious seafood.

Santa Barbara Castle

Start your second day with a decent breakfast because you’ve got a steep 30-minute walk ahead of you up to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. You can of course take the elevator from Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora for a couple of euros to avoid the walk, but you do miss out on the charming winding paths through Parc de l’Ereta to the top of Mount Benacantil.

The Santa Barbara Castle spreads out across the hilltop, 166 metres high, and was originally planned as one of the biggest fortresses in mediaeval Spain; you can wander around most of the grounds and enjoy the amazing structure as well as the spectacular views of Alicante.

The official origin of the name Alicante is said to have come from its former Arabic name, Al-Laqant, however, a legend of the Moor of Al-Laqant and his daughter Cántara who lived in the Santa Barbara Castle is rumoured to be the real reason behind the city being named Alicante.

It’s this Moor who is said to be immortalised in the rock formation below the castle; you can learn more about the legend as you walk around the castle grounds.

Entrance to the large Patio de Armas and castle walls are free for visitors, however, access to the Old Dungeons, Cistern and Hospital is only available by guided tour.

Within the courtyard, you can enjoy a drink and snack at the cafe, or book a tasting of local products such as wine, craft beers and foods, to really make the most of your time in the historic site and learn about local products among experts.

You can also go up to the castle’s highest walkway, the Macho del Castell, where you have an unobstructed 360º view of the city.

You can expect to spend over an hour in the castle, and more if you take part in one of the many activities on offer. If you want a guided tour, check the website for information on what time the English tours take place as they alternate between English and Spanish. You can also book a dramatised tour for a fully immersive experience.

It’s a great place to take in the views of the city, so if you prefer, save your castle visit until sunset for some breathtaking scenery.

Postiguet Beach

Alicante is famous for its weather and any trip wouldn’t be complete without a trip down to Playa del Postiguet. Stretching for almost 900 m alongside Gómiz Promenade, this is one of the most popular places in Alicante for tourists and locals as the beach is so close to the city centre.

Despite its proximity to the harbour, the water is a clear blue, inviting you to paddle and take a breather from the city all year long.

You can walk all the way along Gómiz promenade next to the beachfront, from Plaza Porta del Mar to the Mirando al Mar sculpture, with its beautiful tiled ground and palm trees on either side providing shade. Watch out if you stop for a photo though, as this promenade is popular with roller skaters!

From the beach, you can also see the Santa Barbara Castle and the rock formation under the castle which is said to look like a head with a crown, known as the Head of the Moor.

Port of Alicante

The Port of Alicante, formed in 1271, is one of the most significant places in the city, as it has a long history of trade and sailing across the Mediterranean.

There is still a great deal of activity in the sailing clubs and marina; it’s even been the starting point for The Ocean Race numerous times, a big sailing event that began in Alicante last in January 2023 and next in 2026.

Take a stroll around the port from the scale replica of the Santísima Trinidad, one of the ships of the Spanish Armada involved in the Battle of Trafalgar, along the Esplanada de España and admire the boats or look for a restaurant for the evening such as Restaurante La Brújula for fresh seafood giving you an amazing view over the water, especially around sunset.

Day 3 – Alicante Cuisine & Alternative Sites

Day 3 will show you a different side of the city, taking you to a historic fort before sampling the local cuisine at the central market and exploring the peculiar Mushroom Street – yes, you did read that correctly…

Mercado Central de Alicante

In the centre of Alicante, in Avenida de Alfonso X El Sabio stands the large early 20th-century building housing the city’s famous market.

Over two floors in the huge hall, you can find hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fish and meat, but you can also stop for breakfast or coffee and pick up some dried meats, cheeses, bread and fruits for a picnic at lunchtime.

After you’ve explored the inside, peruse the outside of the market hall to see the impact of the bombings during the Spanish Civil War that the building managed to withstand.

The market opens Monday to Saturday from 7.30 am to 2.30 pm and can get very busy so go early if you want to avoid the crowds. If you want to learn about local cuisine and produce, then visiting the market is definitely one of the best things to do in Alicante.

Saint Fernando Fort

Walking northwestwards from the marketplace to Tossal Hill, you can continue to the historic Castillo de San Fernando.

Built in 1812 and named in honour of the King of Spain, the castle was designed as a fortress to defend the city against attack as well as a prison. However, it was built hastily and hence fell into ruin several years later.

You can spend up to an hour walking around the ruins of the neoclassical fort and perhaps enjoy a picnic with the produce from the morning market with views over the city. Or, you can head down to any of the parks surrounding the castle to relax in the greenery, such as Parc Tossal.

Head back down to the city centre from Calle Pablo Iglesias onto Calle San Francisco for one of Alicante’s most popular attractions.

Calle de las Setas

Previously an unwelcoming area of the city, in 2013 after council discussions, Calle San Francisco was transformed into an imaginative wonderland with colourful paving and several large mushrooms dotting the small street.

At almost 4 metres high, the mushrooms, some with small insects and snails on top, turn the street into a curiously picturesque dream that’s reminiscent of children’s stories. At some point over 3 days in Alicante, you have to see it for yourself!

This pedestrian area has a number of great bars and restaurants of all cuisines, so it’s a great place to wind down your day and join the locals for a late afternoon vermouth.

Plaza Portal de Elche

Just before you reach the end of Calle San Francisco, there’s a small square hidden behind the buildings with a delightful round cafe-bar, a replica of the 20th-century kiosk that previously stood there.

The cafe is an incredibly charming place to spend an evening as the lights on the kiosk and the surrounding streets look wonderful amongst the four enormous Australian Banyan trees which have been protected due to their size.

With large roots hanging down from their branches, the trees are quite impressive, especially given their over 6-metre circumference.

As a small space, it can get busy so if you don’t get to go in the evening, it’s still lovely to come back for a coffee the next day.

Day 4 – Day Trip from Alicante

If you’ve got 4 days in Alicante, you’ll want to get out of the city centre and explore your surroundings, from the beautiful beaches to the salt flats and the palm trees of Elche. If you’re looking for a leisurely day there are also various half-day cruises or wine tasting tours you can take.

To the southwest of Alicante is the small but beautiful city of Elche, 25 minutes by car and 30 minutes by train or coach.

While the city is mostly famous for its huge inner city palm forest, El Palmeral, it actually has an incredibly long history, having been occupied by the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Muslim forces and the Catholic Kingdoms.

You can see this across the city in the 12th-century Altamira Castle which now holds Elche’s Archaeological Museum and the 17th-century Basilica of Santa María de Elche.

The palm grove, however, is the main attraction and you can’t spend 4 days in Alicante without seeing it. With the largest palm grove in Europe in the centre, the city of Elche has over 70,000 date palm trees providing shelter, greenery and of course, delicious dates around the city since the Romans first established it.

In the site there is a museum dedicated to the palm grove, a National Artistic Garden, and a Municipal Park, so it’s the perfect place to spend a warm afternoon, learning about the long history of the palm forest, the influences each culture has brought and the modern threats it faces.

The palm grove is free, however, the museum costs a few euros.

Los Arenales del Sol

A 20-minute drive from Alicante centre or an hour on the train will bring you for a delightful beach day in Los Arenales del Sol. A quaint seaside town, with everything you need for a relaxed day out including small shops, cafes, bars and restaurants on the large beachfront.

If you walk along the beach away from the centre, you’ll come across a large walkway over the beach which you can walk along and take in the views from an elevated point.

You can also walk inwards from the town and discover several quiet hiking trails around a lake and the Bunker del Clot de Galvany.

Alicante Salt Flats

Further South of the city of Alicante are the amazing salt flats of Santa Pola and lakes of Torrevieja and Torre la Mata.

You can drive for 20 minutes from Alicante centre or take an hour-long bus to reach Santa Pola, where you can walk around the huge salt flats spotting flamingoes and go to the Museo de la Sal y Centro de Interpretación del Parque Natural Salinas de Santa Pola to learn about the history of the salt flats and how the salt is collected and used.

If you have a car ( browse Rentalcars.com for options), you can then drive south for around 40 minutes to reach the small towns of Torrevieja and Torre la Mata which have enormous pink and green lakes respectively and make for great photos.

The best way to get to Alicante, Spain by plane is to fly into Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC). There are numerous international and domestic flights that operate to this airport, making it easily accessible from various destinations.

If you prefer to travel by car, you can drive to Alicante using the AP-7 motorway. The journey offers stunning views and takes approximately 4-5 hours from Madrid or Barcelona. Alicante has various parking facilities available in the city.

Unfortunately, there is no direct train to Alicante. However, you can take a train to Alicante Estación, which is the main train station in the city. From there, you can easily connect to Alicante by bus or taxi.

While there are no direct passenger boats to Alicante, you can consider taking a ferry to nearby destinations such as Ibiza or Mallorca, and then connect to Alicante by either plane or bus. The Alicante Port is well-connected and offers ferry services to nearby islands.

Family holidays in Alicante

Distinguishing Alicante from other resorts in Spain is difficult (all are good), but it is possible. With the general pros — warm summers, beautiful beaches, comfortable hotels — Alicante has one undeniably convenient feature: its airport. Therefore family rest begins approximately half an hour after arrival when you leave things in the hotel and leave on a beach where the sun has already heated the sand and the sea caresses to feet.

But apart from that, a holiday with kids in Alicante is like a beach holiday. Find out how to choose when to go to the sea and what Alicante offers.

The city of Alicante is a resort in eastern Spain on the Mediterranean coast. It is the province's administrative centre of the same name in the autonomous community of Valencia . The distance from Alicante to Valencia is 170 km, to Benidorm 46 km and Torrevieja 50 km.

Alicante's coastline is called the Costa Blanca , the white coast. Many beaches are covered with fine white sand, which complements the blue of the sea, sky and blue flags. The sand on Alicante's beaches is predominantly golden in colour (also beautiful). Alicante for Kids

There are many reasons to come to Alicante with children. We've already listed the main attractions of the resort, but it's a pleasure to repeat them:

• the resort is easy to get to;
• Alicante summers are dry and sunny;
• the beaches are ideal for babies and toddlers;
• the hotels make sure that you and your baby have a good time.

The city transport should also be mentioned. City buses provide easy access to beaches or supermarkets, and the tram can even take you to Benidorm.

To add to this list of the advantages, Alicante has plenty of playgrounds for children and several parks where they can hang out in the heat.

Alicante's parks are significant pros for those going on holiday with an infant. Unlike the southern resorts of the province, where the landscape resembles a sun-burned steppe, Alicante's abundance of greenery ensures that the heat of summer is not felt.

But you should know a few things about the resort to avoid disappointment. Firstly, it's a relatively big city where many tourists settle. You'll need to leave Alicante for a soft tan on the beach during the peak season. Another drawback to family holidays in Alicante is the lack of entertainment in the city itself. A trip to Benidorm or Torrevieja will spice things up. A trip to Valencia can also be made to the City of Arts and Sciences , with great museums for the whole family.

Best Time to Travel

The tourist season in Alicante is a pleasant but busy time. The joys include the heat, the sea, the excursions and the holidays. The downsides include many visitors, especially in July and August, skyrocketing prices and the need to book accommodation well in advance.

When is the best time to go to Alicante to avoid the crowds? The flow of tourists starts to subside in September, and by the middle of the month, the beaches and hotels will be half-empty. The weather at this time is suitable for both sightseeing and beach holidays.

You can bring your children even before the season opens in Alicante, in May or early June. The only drawback is the cool sea, but the weather is fine for relaxing on the beach and walking.

Plans can also be attached to exciting events in the resort. The Moors and Christians Festival and the St. Juan's Bonfires Festival are celebrated in summer, the Carnival in winter, and the religious festivals are revered throughout the year. A calendar of cultural events is published on the resort's website. ManyIn Alicante, the bullfighting season begins in June, coinciding with the celebration of St. Juan's Day. Many travellers long to see a Spanish bullfight.

Sea Temperature

"May in Alicante is still spring, not summer," say pessimistic tourists. This pessimism is based on the fact that the sea temperature in late spring hardly reaches +19-20°C. It does feel a bit cold for bathing: if you plan a trip to a resort in May, choosing a hotel with a swimming pool makes sense. In summer, with the arrival of the heat, the sea warms up quickly. By mid-June, the water temperature in Alicante rises to +23°C.

Alicante has its warmest sea in July and September. During this period, the water gets as warm as +25-27°C.

You can take long sea baths until mid-September. Then the water temperature gradually drops to +23°C. Even in October, many people dare to dip in the sea. It's not until November that the water cools down to 20-21°C.

The all-inclusive concept is unpopular in Alicante hotels. More often than not, tourists only have breakfast at the hotel, preferring lunch and dinner in restaurants or tapas bars. Sometimes hotels offer a packed lunch. You can take it with you if you'll be travelling all day.

Alicante's restaurants offer a variety of delicious dishes, including the famous paella dish from Valencia. The 'horchata de chufa', a refreshing drink made from ground almonds, is available during the summer in Alicante and other towns in the Valencian Community.

If you plan to make your food, the nearest supermarket is an excellent place. Large Supercor, Carrefour, Mercadona, Lidl, Consum, and DIA shops exist in all city areas, including Albufereta and San Juan. For fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, jamón, sausages and cheeses you can go to the central market or smaller markets away from the centre. The markets usually close in the afternoon and are closed on Sundays.

Getting Around

Public transport in Alicante is in high demand: the city is not small, and not every beach or attraction is easily accessible on foot. There are fifty bus routes and five tram lines for residents and visitors. There are maps of all the routes on the city's tourist website.

Public transport in Alicante runs from 6:00-6:30 until 23:00, with two night bus routes. The exact timetable is available on the carriers' websites.

There are red and blue buses in the city. The blue buses are intercity, but you can ride them around Alicante. You can buy tickets from the driver or ticket vending machines. A city bus fare is €1.45. To save on tickets for children aged 5-15, you can buy a Bono Móbilis Escolar card for 30 rides. The cost is €16.50. An adult's Bono Móbilis Multiviaje card with 30 rides costs €26.10.

The cost of a tram ticket varies depending on the zone in which it is valid. Zone A covers Alicante, and three tram lines run within this zone. Zones B and C are the nearest suburbs of Alicante, all the way to Benidorm: you can get there on the L1 tram. Zones D-F are the resort towns between Benidorm and Denia (line L9). A single-trip ticket is valid for Zone A and costs €1.45.

You can buy Bono tickets for 10 (30) trips to save on fares. They cost €8.70 (26.10) within Alicante and €7.60 (21.50) outside the city. A tram trip to Benidorm will cost €3.75.

Another way to save money on travel is to buy the AlikanteToutistCard. With it, you can travel unlimitedly on buses, coaches, trams and the Alicante Tourist Bus.

Sometimes taxis are handy for getting around Alicante. Taxis are equipped with meters, and the fare within the city is between €5 and €10. Free cars are waiting for passengers in the car parks.

Is it worth hiring a car in Alicante? If you're not travelling around the city, it's unlikely to be justified. The old town centre is a jumble of narrow one-way streets with a lack of parking spaces. In the newer neighbourhoods, traffic is more accessible, and there is paid and free parking.

But to visit Benidorm, Torrevieja and Valencia, you can rent a car: car rental companies have offices at the airport and train station.

Things to Do with Kids

Family holidays in Alicante do well without planning. There are beaches, a castle on a rock, a beautiful old town, a zoo and children's playgrounds. So where to start?

You can get a first impression of Alicante by taking the Turibús bus. The bus makes ten stops along the way: it stops at the port, goes up to the archaeological museum and Santa Barbara Castle, and stops in the Santa Cruz area with its staircase streets and almost toy houses. Get off at any stop and then continue to the next bus.

For example, the Santa Barbara Fortress will be fun for a child. You can explore all the rooms of the history museum, walk along the castle walls, gaze out at the city below and peer out at sea through the eyepiece of a modern telescope. On the slopes of Benacantil Hill, where the castle stands, there is a park where you can take your child for a walk and then go down to Postiguet Beach... in a lift.

There are plenty of parks in Alicante, including the oldest park in the city, Canalejas, the relatively new El Palmeral park with its towering palm trees and Lo Morant Park with its skateboarding and petanque fields. Of course, all the green areas have playgrounds for children.

The Aitana Safari Park , on the other hand, is not very green. The landscape looks more like an African savannah, and elephants, giraffes and antelopes are walking there. However, there are animals from different parts of the world in "Aytan".

When the heat dies down in the evening, take the kids to Mundo de los niños , a small amusement park. The usual rides are no longer the usual attractions in this park: a trampoline has been transformed into a pirate ship, and a children's steam train takes the children to visit hippos and giraffes.

The Virtual Planet indoor play centre , has trampolines, table and video games, mini-bowling and other fun activities. There are similar centres in many shopping malls.

Entertainment in the Neighbourhood

Although Alicante is the province's centre, there's not much to do. You'll have to go to the neighbouring towns to have fun with the kids. Benidorm is where most of the fun is to be found. The list is impressive:

• Aqualandia and Aqua Natura water parks ;
• Terra Natura Zoo , where there are no enclosures, and you can interact with the animals;
• Mundomar Nature Park with a dolphinarium;
• Terra Mitica amusement park , the main attraction for children and adults in the province of Alicante;
• Alfas Castle , where jousting tournaments are held in the summer;
• a dinosaur park in the Cacti Algar Garden .

Torrevieja can't boast so many attractions, but there are two water parks in the city: the bigger one, Aquopolis , and the smaller one, Flamingo . Torrevieja is also home to a real submarine, the S 61 Dolphin, and the sailing ship Pascual Flores, which used to deliver Torrevieja salt to other countries.

The Beauty of Nature

When looking for ideas for things to do in Alicante with your child, we recommend getting out of the city and into the great outdoors. The area around the central city of the province is rich in places of interest, such as the Algara Waterfalls Park, the Canelobre Cave , the palm forest near Elche and the island of Tabarca.

Nature experiences include a walk through Elche's Rio Safari Park .

You can have a picnic if you prefer a quiet holiday in nature rather than a race to the sights. There are picnic areas in zoos, nature parks and just about every green space you can think of.

The Sea and Beaches

Even the driest description of Alicante's beaches evokes dreams of relaxing by the sea:

• a dozen and a half sandy beaches have been awarded the blue flag for coastal cleanliness and safety (of which four are within the city limits, the rest are 5-15 km from Alicante);
• six beaches awarded by SICTED for high-quality service;
• wide shore covered with fine sand;
• smooth, gentle seabed;
• free access to all beaches (but there is a charge for renting sun loungers and parasols).

The town's central and most popular beach is Postiguet. It's both award-winning and popular with tourists. The definite pros of Postiguet Beach are the scenic view (Santa Barbara Castle looms directly over the beach), its vast length, good infrastructure, children's and sports grounds, many hotels nearby, and the possibility of parking next to the beach.

Besides those who want to laze by the sea, divers come to Postiguet. There are several diving centres on the beach where you can take a training course or rent equipment. There is one drawback: congestion during the high season.

Another award-winning beach is Albufereta. It is located in a relatively large bay on the north-eastern outskirts of Alicante. The sea is always calm, with children's slides and swings on the shore and fewer people than in the centre. It is one of the best beaches for children.

Next door to Albufereta is the equally famous San Juan beach. San Juan is visited by windsurfing enthusiasts. It is very long (2,900m), wide (85m), landscaped and consequently very busy.

Saladar Urbanova is the perfect beach for a relaxing holiday. The wide, long coastline is half-empty even during the high season because the beach is just outside the city, 5 km south of Alicante.

Alicante's most exotic beach destination is Tabarca Island. The coastline is narrow, and only the official beach has been cleared of rocks, but the sea near Tabarca is interesting for snorkelling, and the island is famous for its old fortress and tiny, intimate town.

You can also relax on the beaches of the neighbouring resorts of Santa Pola and El Campello. You can get there by intercity bus or by car.

The list of things to see with children in Alicante is short but surprising. There are typical historical and archaeological museums but also unexpected ones, like the Bonfire Museum or the Turrón Museum.

The Archaeological Museum of Alicante does not look like a warehouse of dusty shards. Even pre-schoolers can be taken on a guided tour, with bright or darkened rooms, plenty of multimedia and a virtual journey back in time.

To reinforce your impression, visit the ruins of the Roman city of Lucentum on the outskirts of Alicante. The excavations cover an area of 5 hectares and don't seem out of place against modern blocks of flats.

The Bonfire Museum, on the other hand, is a sight to behold. It's dedicated to the tradition of St. Juan's Bonfires. Here you can show your child the giant figures set up in the city streets during the festival. Some sculptures are very touching, and others have a sense of wicked irony.

The Turrón museum has a natural appearance in the city: this sweet treat originated in the province of Alicante. It used to be made only at Christmas, but now the turron can also be bought in the summer.

Is it any wonder that Alicante has a bullfighting museum? Bullfighting still takes place in Valencia's autonomous community, and the bullring in Alicante is one of the best. The museum tells more about bullfighting traditions, the famous bullfighters and why the bullfighting between bull and matador has been compared to ballet.

Another museum you can visit in Alicante with a preschool child. It is a small nativity scene museum, and the scene of the birth of the infant Christ is repeated many times in both ancient and modern versions.

Incidentally, the list of things to see in Alicante hardly mentions the exciting museum dedicated to the Volvo Ocean Race, a round-the-world yacht race. The multimedia facilities in the museum are excellent, providing a focus for visitors to immerse themselves in the constant struggle with the elements.

English and Spanish are used throughout. Admission to the museum is free, but visitors often leave money in the gift shop: valuable items with the regatta's logo will be useful as gifts.

Museums in neighbouring towns

If you drive around Costa Blanca, you will find even more exciting places for children.

You will find several museums at once in Guadaleste. The Museum of Vintage Motorcycles and Cars will appeal to men of all ages. The dollhouse museum will not only appeal to girls; boys will appreciate the mini-city with its train station. The Microgiant Museum is a tiny wonderland, not just a display of miniatures but a fantasy about little people's lives.

In Torrevieja, which has long been the centre of the salt trade, there is the Sea and Salt Museum . Admission is free, and exhibits include model ships, fishing gear and archaeological finds from the bottom of the sea.

The city of Elche is often visited by travellers on holiday in Alicante with children. In addition to the Rio Safari Park is the Paleontological Museum , with dinosaur skeletons and fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old. The museum has created an excavation area for the active kids: budding palaeontologists will be delighted with every find.

Where to Stay

Where to stay in Alicante with children? There is probably a place for those who love luxury holidays and tourists with modest needs. There are four-star hotels on the coast, near the Santa Barbara Castle, less posh triplets not in the centre but close to the sea, and apartments of varying levels of comfort — there is plenty to choose from.

Most hotels are concentrated in Alicante's central areas of Barri Vell Santa Creu and Raval Roig.

There is a high density of hotels and apartments in L'Albuffereta Playa and de San Juan, known for their beaches. This is where Santa Barbara Castle and Postiguet Beach are located. It is advisable to choose accommodation closer to the coast, as the town is on the hills and walking up the steep streets with a child after the sea isn't easy. Do note that the hotels in Alicante, as elsewhere in Spain, are not directly on the coast but are set back from it by a promenade and motorway. Generally, accommodation is close to the beach, with parking along the beach.

Parents often opt for family-run hotels when choosing where to stay with their children. The Costa Blanca is renowned for its family-friendly hotels, with Benidorm being particularly successful, but Alicante is not far behind.

The best hotels for holidays with children have family rooms, playgrounds, swimming pools for babies, and mini-clubs. Children's activities at the hotel are a way to keep your child occupied during those hours when the heat makes it impossible to go to the beach or out on an excursion.

When researching your options for where to stay in Alicante, look out for hotels marked SICTED. Several family-run hotels, including Castilla and Almirante, are near San Juan Beach.

On the other hand, there is plenty to do outside the hotels so you can choose an apartment for a holiday in Alicante with your children. Alternatively, several resort towns are close to Alicante for a relaxing holiday. Santa Pola and El Campello are the closest, but you can explore further afield, such as Villajoyosa.

Alicante International Airport is located 10 km from the city. It receives scheduled and charter flights from many countries. The flight timetable is available on the airport website.

How to get to Alicante from the airport:

• by hire car;
• book an individual transfer.

Bus routes link Alicante to Valencia, Benidorm, Torrevieja and other cities. ALSA is one of the carriers operating between Valencia and Alicante. You can find timetables and ticket prices at https://www.alsa.es/. There is also an L1 monorail line between Alicante and Benidorm.

There are trains from Berlin, Paris and Barcelona to Alicante. The timetable can be found on the website of the Spanish railway company RENFE: https://www.renfe.com The bus station is located 800 metres from the railway station.

There is no bus service at night, but taxis are available 24 hours a day at the airport.

You can rent a car when you arrive in Spain. There are several car rental companies at Alicante Airport.

How to get to Alicante:

• from Valencia — take the A-7;
• from Barcelona — take the E-15 motorway;
• from Madrid, take the E-901 and then the E-903.

An Alicante itinerary for 1, 2, or 3 days: Heart of the Costa Blanca

If you’re thinking about a trip to Spain’s Costa Blanca, I am here to help you plan your Alicante itinerary! This gorgeous city on the Mediterranean Sea has beautiful architecture, a great restaurant and bar scene, and – of course – plenty of beaches. Whether you have one, two, or three days in Alicante, this article is here to help you make the most of your time. 

One Day in Alicante

With just a day in Alicante, you have time to see the city’s most famous landmark, spend some time on the beach, and grab a meal or two in a charming square. 

I personally don’t think these need to be done in any particular order. Many people suggest visiting the castle for sunset, but I found it absolutely stunning in the middle of the afternoon. (The color of that water! Incredible.) 

Of course, if you’re visiting in the heat of summer, that may not sound so appealing. Do whatever makes sense for you based on the time of year and your travel style. (And note that the castle doesn’t open until 10:00.)

If you’re the kind of traveler that likes to pack a lot into your days, you can definitely squeeze a couple of the Old Quarter sights into a day in Alicante as well. (See Day 2 for details.) 

I’ll also note that if you have  more  than 1 day in Alicante, you might want to swap one of these places with an activity from Day 2. Almost everything I’ve listed for your first day is outside, while the second day has museums, churches, and other breaks from the sun and heat. I’ve done it that way because I think the castle and the beach are the two must-see attractions in Alicante, and you should prioritize them if you only have one day here. With more time, these sights can be visited in any order that suits you. 

Castillo de Santa Bárbara

If you only have one day in Alicante, you shouldn’t miss the Santa Bárbara Castle. This fortress, perched on top of Mount Benacantil and overlooking the whole city, is the main must-do here.

Built by the Moors in the 9 th  century, the castle has a long history of being captured and controlled by various rulers over the centuries. 

There are three main levels to the castle today. The first one you’ll reach is actually the newest. It was built in the 18 th  century and is not all that interesting today. 

The middle level, constructed two centuries earlier, now houses several interesting halls and is where you’ll find the indoor museum exhibits. There is also a café here in one of the courtyards. 

The highest level, known as La Torreta, is the grand prize. These are the oldest remaining walls of the fortress, dating to the 14 th  century. There are several watchtowers, helpful placards explaining the history of each section, and absolutely incredible 360-degree views of Alicante. 

I probably spent more than an hour up here. I loved seeing the color of the ocean change with the passing clouds, watching seagulls hover in place in the wind, and admiring the rooftop terraces of the neighborhoods below.

The castle opens at 10:00, but closing time varies depending on the season. You can check the schedule on the  Castillo de Santa Bárbara website . 

Entry is free, but some areas of the castle are only accessible via guided tour. These include the dungeons, a 16 th -century cistern, and an early 20 th -century hospital for cholera patients. You can book tours at the visitor’s center (next to the gift shop). The website has a schedule for both English and Spanish tours. 

How to get to Santa Barbara Castle

There is a  lift  that takes visitors from Postiguet Beach to the Santa Barbara Castle for €2.70.

Alternatively, minibuses leave every 40 minutes from  Plaza Puerta del Mar , right across from the port, and the  Passarela del Postiguet . The price is €1.45. (If you’re over this way, though, I think you may as well take the lift.) The minibuses also stop near the archaeological museum at the  MARQ – Gómez Ulla  bus stop and the  MARQ – Castillo  tram stop. 

You can also walk, which I recommend doing (at least on the way down) as a way to explore the winding streets of one of Alicante’s most charming quarters, the Barrio de Santa Cruz.

Barrio de Santa Cruz

Alicante’s Old Town sits right at the foot of Mount Benacantil. The most beautiful part of this quarter is the Santa Cruz neighborhood, which is tucked into the hillside in the northern part of the Old Town.

These lovely little streets are full of potted flowers, whitewashed houses, and beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea. 

To get there, head to the Plaza del Carmen and then continue north on Calle San Rafael. From here, the streets become a maze – perfect for exploring. 

The stairs in front of you will lead you to Parc La Ereta. The main path zigzags up the mountain to eventually reach the Santa Barbara Castle. 

If you head left instead, you can stroll through the streets of Calle San Luis and Calle San Antonio, admiring the colorful tiles, plants, and incredible views. 

Postiguet Beach

Alicante’s main beach is Playa de Postiguet, which stretches northeast from the port. You can park yourself in the sand or go for a stroll down the long boardwalk.

The beach has plenty of amenities, including lifeguards, a play area, and public restrooms.

Alicante’s most famous beach, however, is Playa San Juan, which is located about eight kilometers northeast of the Old Town. It is longer than Playa de Postiguet with more space to lounge, play volleyball, or enjoy the waves in shallow water. 

You can reach Playa San Juan by bus, tram, or subway from Alicante’s Old Town. Take buses 21 or 22, tram lines 1 or 3, or subway line 4. 

If it’s not really beach weather during your trip to Alicante, you can check out some of the museums listed on the itinerary for Day 2. 

The Explanada de España

On the other side of the port from Postiguet Beach, you’ll find the Explanada de España, a pedestrian promenade made from colorful mosaic tiles. The walkway is lined with palm trees, and it’s a lovely place for a stroll. There are also plenty of inviting outdoor tables if you’re ready for some food. 

Calle de Las Setas

Once you’ve walked the Explanada de España, head inland just a few blocks to check out Alicante’s Mushroom Street. Officially Calle San Francisco, this pedestrian street features shops, cafes, and … a bunch of mushroom statues. 

Apparently this part of town used to be a bit run-down and unsafe. The statues were built in 2013 as a kind of revitalization effort. An unconventional approach, but it worked! Now, the street is busy with shoppers, diners, and families.

The mushrooms are a cute and interesting little quirk, and you’re already close by. You can find the statues on the blocks between Plaza Calvo Sotelo and Carrer Castaños. 

Two Days in Alicante

With 2 days in Alicante, you can spend some time exploring the city’s Old Town, check out a museum or two, and pop into Alicante’s most famous market. 

As mentioned above, you might want to rearrange this itinerary a little bit so you’re not outside for your entire first day in Alicante. It gets hot, hot, hot here, especially from June – August. If you have 2 days in Alicante, you could swap one of the activities from the first day (e.g. hanging out on the beach) with one of the indoor activities from Day 2 (like one of the museums). 

Admire the architecture in Alicante Old Town

Alicante’s Old Town is home to a number of churches and other interesting historical buildings. 

Basílica de Santa María

The Basílica de Santa María, constructed between the 14 th  and 16 th  centuries in Valencian Gothic style, is the oldest church in Alicante. The Rococo alter was added in the 18 th  century. You can check the basilica’s opening hours on the  Alicante tourism website . 

Concatedral de San Nicolás

The Cathedral of San Nicolás de Bari, built in the 17 th  century, features both Herrerian and Baroque architecture. The Valencian Gothic cloisters contained inside belonged to a medieval church and date to two centuries earlier. You likely noticed the cathedral’s striking blue roof when looking down on Alicante from the castle. Entry is free, and you can check the opening hours on the  cathedral’s website . (Note that it usually closes for a few hours in the afternoon.)

Alicante Town Hall

It’s hard to miss the 18 th  century town hall, or Ayunamiento, in Alicante. Even if you’re just wandering aimlessly through the Old Town, you will almost certainly run up against this imposing Baroque building. It sits next to a large square where you can often find a shaded table to enjoy a drink or some tapas. 

Casa Carbonell

At the eastern end of the Explanada de España, make sure to look up and admire the Casa Carbonell, one of Alicante’s most famous modernist buildings. 

Mercado Central de Alicante

Another beautiful modernist building houses Alicante’s Central Market, a great place to grab lunch on your second day in the city. The markets stalls, numbering almost 300, sell everything from local produce to wine to specialty coffee.

In the morning, the market is busy with shoppers picking up fresh fruit and veggies, eggs, meat, and seafood. In the afternoon, it has become a popular place to meet friends for a drink and some tapas. You can view a list of stalls, restaurants, and bars on the  market’s website . 

Depending on the season, the market opens between 6:30 and 7:00 and closes between 14:30 and 15:15. Note that it is closed on Sundays. 

You might prefer to take a food and wine tour of the market with a local guide. (If you want to visit the stalls inside before they close, choose a lunchtime tour.) 

Behind the Mercado Central is the Plaza 25 de Mayo. It is so named to commemorate the 300 people who died when the market was bombed during the Spanish Civil War. There is a small memorial to the victims next to a flower market. 

Alicante’s Museums

Alicante has a number of museums for those interested in art, culture, archaeology, or the round-the-world sailing competition known as The Ocean Race. If you have more than 2 days in Alicante, you’ll easily have time to visit a few of them. 

For your second day, I recommend choosing whichever museum listed below interests you most. Some of the museums are very close to each other, so you could certainly pop into more than one in an afternoon. Just note that all museums are closed on Mondays.

MACA (Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante)

The MACA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante) is housed in Casa de la Asegurada, which dates to the 17 th  century and is located just next to Santa Maria Basilica. 

The museum has several floors of contemporary art that is well-curated in a nicely laid out space. There are a few interesting mobile sculptures that play with light and space really beautifully. (Unfortunately, photos are not allowed, so I have nothing to show you!)

The collection also includes works by some of Spain’s most celebrated artists of the 20 th  century, including Dalí, Miró, and Picasso. 

Entry is free. You can check opening hours on the  MACA website  (in Spanish). 

MARQ (Archaeological Museum of Alicante)

The Museo Arqueologico de Alicante is probably the most popular museum in the city. It is consistently lauded for the quality of its temporary exhibitions. It also houses thousands of years of artifacts as part of its permanent collection and is a great place to learn about local and world history. 

You can check the MARQ’s opening hours and guided tour schedule on its  website . Note that it is closed on Mondays. General admission for the permanent collection is €5 (and only €3 on Sundays and holidays). Access to the temporary collections cost more; this varies by exhibit. You’re not allowed to bring in anything larger than a small handbag, but there are free lockers next to the ticket counter if you need to leave a backpack. 

Museo the Ocean Race

The Ocean Race Museum is a small museum dedicated to the sailing race formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race (now known simply as – you guessed it – The Ocean Race). It’s an interesting little museum – even if you know nothing about sailing or the race. 

Alicante has been the starting point for The Ocean Race since 2008. There are actual boats on display as well as interactive exhibits. 

The museum is located at Alicante’s main port between the Explanada de España and Postiguet Beach. You can view the opening hours on the  museum’s website . It is free! 

Museo de Hogueras

Alicante’s most famous annual festival is the Fogueres de Sant Joan (the Bonfires of St. John), held at the end of June. The festival features street parties, fireworks, parades, and yes, large bonfires. 

Before the festival, local artists create impressive, detailed sculptures out of wood, cork, paper mache, and other materials. There are competitions to determine the best sculptures each year. And at the end of the festival – they all go up in flames. 

Almost! A few are spared, and those are the ones that end up in this museum. You can check the opening hours on the Alicante  tourism website . Entry is free. 

MUBAG (Gravina Museum of Fine Arts)

For art lovers, the Museo de Bellas Artes is only a few minutes on foot from the MACA. The fine arts museum features work from the 16 th  century through the early 20 th  century. 

This museum is also free! Opening hours are posted on the  website . 

Tossal de Manises

This archaeological site 3.5 kilometers from the city center is where the Roman town of Lucentum once stood. The museum is affiliated with MARQ but located quite close to Playa de la Albufereta and Playa de la Almadraba. (See the next section.) 

Back to the beach

Many hours of wandering through the museums and churches of the Old Town have probably left you pretty tired. If you still have some time left in your day, I would spend it relaxing on the beach. And if it’s not really beach weather, find yourself a nice little tapas bar in the Old Town!

If you’d like to see somewhere new, there are a number of beautiful beaches aside from Playa de Postiguet and Playa San Juan. Muchavista Beach is located just north of Playa San Juan – it is more like an extension of it. In the other direction, you have Playa de las Huertas.

There are also a couple of small but beautiful beach coves tucked in between Postiguet and San Juan, including  Playa de la Albufereta  and  Playa de la Almadraba . 

Three Days in Alicante

If you have 3 days in Alicante, you can either keep exploring the city or head out on a day trip. If you’d prefer to stay in town, I definitely recommend checking out another museum (listed above for Day 2). Aside from that, there are a few more outdoor sights that make for a nice walk (if the weather cooperates). 

Serra Grossa

For a different perspective on the city, you can climb up Serra Grossa. You’ll have likely noticed this hill to the northeast when you visited the Santa Bárbara Castle on your first day in Alicante. It’s a relatively easy hike to the top with panoramic views of the sea and the city. 

The most convenient trailhead is located on Calle Obispo Victorio Oliver (northeast of Plaza Mar 2). This is about a 30-40 minute walk if you’re coming from the city center or the Old Town. Once there, it takes about an hour and a half to two hours to explore the trails. Note that there is no shade on this hike, so plan accordingly depending on the time of year. 

Castillo de San Fernando

Yes, there is another castle. (Well, technically, it’s a fortress rather than a castle.) This one is newer, dating to the early 19 th  century. 

Unless you are a real history buff, the San Fernando Castle is not really a must-see in Alicante. Still, it makes for a nice stroll. Like Castillo de Santa Barbara, it has lovely views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. There are also nice walking paths in the nearby Parc del Tossal. 

Take a day trip

Your third day in Alicante would also be well spent taking a day trip. Popular day trips from Alicante include the Guadalest Valley, Elche, Altea, Torrevieja, and Tabarca Island. 

🛏️ Where to stay

There are not a lot of budget accommodation options in Alicante, unfortunately. (Even in shoulder season!)

If you’re booking far enough in advance, the best value is definitely found in apartment rentals. You can find studios and even one-bedrooms for nearly the same price as a cramped hotel room will be if searching closer to your travel dates. 

Have a look at the following:

UNIQ Flats : Beautiful and modern apartments with kitchenettes and washing machines. Excellent location in a charming part of the Old Town. Just around the corner from the MACA, Basílica de Santa María, and stairs to Parc La Ereta. Five minute walk to the beach.

Apartamento BGuest : Spacious, modern apartments with fully equipped kitchens (think dishwasher and oven), washing machines, and a central location – less than 10 minutes from the Explanada in one direction and the train station in the other. 

Tandem Portal de Elche : Good value apartments in a very central location – just minutes to the Explanada and smack in the middle of restaurants, bars, and cafés.

There are a lot of similar options around the city center. If there’s no availability or if prices are too high for your dates, take a look at La City Mercado . I stayed here and even though the room was small and it wasn’t necessarily good value, it was very clean, comfortable, and well-located.

🚊 How to get to Alicante 

Alicante is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain, and as such it is well connected to other cities by rail, bus, and air. 

The Alicante train station is located within walking distance of the center and the Old Town. You can take the train from many other cities in Spain, including Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, and Málaga. 

You can check timetables and prices directly on the Renfe website . 

For places that aren’t easily reached by train from Alicante (such as Granada), you can easily hop on a bus. 

The bus station is a 20 minute walk or less from most places in center and Old Town.

Alicante airport is about 10 kilometers from the city. Bus line C-6 will take you right into the city.

2 Day Alicante Itinerary

Have breakfast at la més coketa.

One of my favourite breakfast places in Alicante is La Més Coketa because it has it all – its decor is beautiful, the food is delicious, and the staff is very friendly.

It’s a popular choice among the locals, so it’s a good idea to turn up there when they open if possible. On the breakfast menu, you’ll find savoury options like toast, sandwiches, crepes, and a good sweet selection of cakes and pastries. Drink-wise, they have anything from a cappuccino to freshly squeezed juices.

I’ve tried their savoury toasts like avocado and turkey toast, chai latte and orange juice. Everything was spot on.

Walk on Explanada de España

Explanada de España or Passeig Esplanada d’Espanya is a beautiful promenade that is the meeting point for locals and tourists.

It’s home to tall palm trees and beautiful flowers, but its most unique feature is its tiled floor made with marble mosaic pieces in three different colours: red, cream and dark blue. The design of these tiles resembles the waves of the sea.

The explanada is a lively place where you can go for a stroll or enjoy a coffee or meal on an outdoor terrace.

Explore Alicante Old Town and Barrio de Santa Cruz

The historic centre of Alicante is home to many important buildings like the Basilica of St Mary and the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts, which are worth seeing and visiting; however, take some time to wander around the old town to discover picturesque streets, street art and colourful buildings.

Fuente de San Antonio is one of the spots where you can see houses painted in bright colours like blue, red, and orange.

Wandering the old town is definitely one of the best things to do in Alicante (and it’s free!)

Have brunch at El Palacete

Whether you want brunch or a quick stop to grab lunch, El Palacete menu includes toasts, bagels and wraps, as well as hot drinks and cocktails.

The cafe is beautifully decorated and feels very cosy, but the food is good too. I ordered the chicken and parmesan bagel and it was nicely presented and full of flavour.

The only downside of my meal there was that the service was a bit slow, but it was a bank holiday and more people than usual.

Contemplate art at Gravina Museum of Fine Arts MUBAG

If there’s a museum you can’t miss during your time in Alicante is the Gravina Museum of Fine Arts MUBAG . It has temporary and permanent exhibitions that showcase paintings and artwork from local artists.

The right part of the museum is where you’ll normally find temporary exhibitions that range from fashion to nature and music. When I visited this museum, there was an interesting exhibition of paintings inspired by fashion and unique shoes.

The left part of the museum is where the permanent exhibition is. You can discover two floors with impressive art – from paintings that represent life in Alicante in other centuries to objects like fans and tambourines.

Go inside the Basilica of St Mary of Alicante

Basílica de Santa María is the oldest church in Alicante. It was built in the 14th century, where there used to be a former mosque. However, it went through a refurbishment in the 15th century because of a fire.

Inside the church, there’s an impressive 18th-century rococo altar and chapels. Its beautiful mixture of architectural styles makes it worth visiting.

Next to the church, you’ll find a small square and the MACA museum.

Visit MACA Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante

MACA is the abbreviation of Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante which translates to Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante. This museum and art gallery hosts some of the most important pieces of art in the city.

It has one temporary exhibition room and four permanent exhibition rooms, as well as a library. On all the floors you will be able to appreciate important paintings, sculptures and objects.

If you love art, you need to include MACA in your Alicante itinerary, plus it’s also free.

Take pictures at El Carrer dels Bolets

Do you know that there is a mushroom street in Alicante? Yes, I had no idea of this until I was there and came across this street called El Carrer dels Bolets, also known as Carrer de Las Setas.

It’s interesting to see these giant mushrooms on a street home to restaurants and small independent shops.

Have dinner at D’Tablas

Before my trip, I researched places to eat in Alicante, I must admit I’m a big foodie, and travel and food go together for me. However, my friend came across this tapas place by chance.

If you’re a fan of tapas, this place is for you. Not only is the food cheap, but delicious too. You can enjoy tapas from €1,50, and the concept behind this place is a bit different from other places.

Tapas are served in wooden trays. The waiter goes around the bar with different tapas, and you choose the ones you want. They calculate how much you need to pay according to the number of wooden trays you’ve taken.

Grab a quick breakfast from La Masa de Tomasa Bakery

Whether you’re in a rush or you don’t want to spend too much time having breakfast so you can make the most of your day, La Masa de Tomasa Bakery is a fantastic choice.

This bakery has mouthwatering cakes, biscuits and pastries that are irresistible. You’ll find pastries that you can find in any bakery, like croissants and eclairs, but also traditional sweets of Alicante.

For example, Coca Boba , also known as Coca de Llanda , a spongy cake that normally includes nuts or raisins, but every grandma has their own secret recipe.

Visit Alicante Market

Alicante Central Market is the biggest in the city. It has two floors with a wide range of products – from fresh and local seafood, meat, vegetables and fruits, and cheeses to flower stalls with bouquets and plants. It’s the best place to do your shopping if you’re staying in an apartment.

The market is open from 7 am to 2:30 pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and from 7 am to 1:30 pm on Tuesday and Saturday.

Discover Castillo de Santa Bárbara

Santa Barbara Castle is a must-see historic building to add to your Alicante itinerary. This 14th-century fortress on Mount Benacantil was a strategic point to defend the city due to its excellent location that overlooks the coast.

The castle grounds are bigger than you probably expected. Walk around the castle, enjoy the different panoramic views of the city and learn about its history and legends by taking a tour. You can easily spend approximately 2 hours exploring the castle.

Before heading to the castle, it’s also worth checking on their website to see if they have any upcoming events. I was gutted when I found out there was a chocolate-tasting tour, and it was sold out.

Entry to the castle is free, but you must pay €2.70 if you want to access the castle by lift.

Enjoy panoramic views from Parc de l’Ereta

One of the best parks in Alicante in Parque de la Ereta (or Parc de l’Ereta in Valenciano). It’s a peaceful park located on the slopes of Mount Benacantil.

It’s surrounded by a good variety of trees and plants, including orange and olive trees, and it has a big attractive fountain, wooden benches and incredible views of Alicante.

Parque de la Ereta is my number one spot to watch the beautiful pastel sky colours of the sunrise or sunset and get a panoramic view of the city.

Go for a walk to the port

The port of Alicante is a lovely place to go for a walk on a sunny day. There isn’t much to do, but you can simply soak up the relaxing atmosphere, contemplate the castle views and stop by the tourism office to get some recommendations on more things to do in Alicante and its surroundings.

Have paella at La Brújula

La Brújula restaurant is one of the recommendations I got from the hotel receptionist, and I’m glad I ended up having lunch there.

The restaurant is in the marina of Alicante, and its specialities are fresh fish and seafood dishes and paella. However, you’ll find a good variety of paellas and kinds of rice – from soupy rice ( arroz meloso ) to the most known seafood paella.

My friend and I opted for the chicken and vegetable paella, and it was one of the best paellas I have ever tried when eating out in Spain, so if you love paella, add this restaurant to your list.

The price of paella is €16 per person, and a minimum of two people is required.

Soak up the sun at Playa del Postiguet

Playa del Postiguet is the closest beach to Alicante city centre. This beautiful golden sand beach is the perfect place to spend a summer day.

However, with the lovely and sunny weather you can enjoy in Alicante almost all year round, you can walk on the beach promenade, have a drink at one of the beach bars or watch the sunset.

Its beach promenade is always lively, and you’ll see many locals and tourists leisurely walking with family or friends on a Sunday afternoon.

If you’re looking for a good beach bar, I recommend going to Xiringuito Postiguet . It’s a popular option, and it’s lovely. You’ll love its bohemian vibes, swings and sitting with a sea view.

Have dinner at Saona

Saona is a restaurant chain in Alicante, and it offers amazing food – from local dishes like coca and arroz meloso to international dishes like salmon tartar that will surprise you.

The restaurant is decorated in a modern and minimalistic way, and it’s the perfect choice for a romantic dinner because of the ambience.

Depending on the day of the week you go to Saona, you’ll find different set menus, including a starter, a main course and a dessert. Sundays to Wednesdays are the best days to go to Saona if you want to save some money as the 3 courses will only cost you €12.99.

Staying longer than 2 days in Alicante?

Visiting Alicante for 48 hours or longer gives you the opportunity to visit more attractions, which might be a bit further than the city centre, as well as to go on day trips to nearby cities and towns.

Here are some extra activities to include in your itinerary:

Visit Alicante’s bullring

Aside from bullfighting festivals, which I don’t support, the Alicante bullring is an important architectural building that dates back to the 19th century.

Not only does it host bullfights but also concerts, festivals and even political gatherings. Also, during the festive season, they often install an ice rink, perfect for visiting with friends and family.

You’ll also find the Bullfighting Museum inside the bullring, which you can visit for free.

Explore San Fernando Castle

Alicante doesn’t just have one castle, but two. San Fernando Castle is on Mount Tossal, and although it’s referred to as a castle, it’s actually a fortress with ruins.

There isn’t much to see in the fortress, but visiting for the views is worth visiting.

Go on a day trip

Alicante is surrounded by incredible cities and lesser-known coastal towns that you can visit in a few hours or a full day. Depending on your travel preferences, you can go on a mini road trip through the inland of Costa Blanca or make one of these day trips from Alicante:

➢ Alicante to Villajoyosa (30 minute drive) . Villajoyosa is a beautiful coastal town known for its golden sand beaches and colourful buildings. It’s a lovely town to visit in a day as there are a few things to do – from relaxing on the beach to visiting museums like Villajoyosa Museum or Valor Chocolate Museum.

➢ Alicante to Benidorm (40 minute drive) . One of the most popular towns near Alicante is Benidorm. Although you’ll hear mixed reviews about this resort town, you might want to form your own opinion about Benidorm by visiting it. Some top things to do in Benidorm include visiting Balcon del Mediteráneo, a stunning viewpoint, going to one of its theme parks like Aqualandia or Terra Mitica and chilling at the beach.

➢ Alicante to Altea (45 minute drive) . Altea is the prettiest town in Costa Blanca. This whitewashed town is very picturesque and offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Coast and Natural Parks. Some of the best things to do in Altea are to explore its historic town, contemplate its views and taste the local food.

➢ Alicante to Murcia (55 minute drive) . If you prefer to visit a city, Murcia is an underrated destination in the east of Spain. Despite not being as popular as other cities, there are fantastic things to do in Murcia. Visit Murcia Cathedral and Santa Clara la Real Convent Museum, go to the market or discover unique natural spots near Murcia like Salinas de San Pedro.

How to get to Alicante

The easiest and quickest way to get to Alicante is by flying to Alicante Airport (ALC). The airport is about 25 minutes drive from the city centre.

Once you’re at the airport, you have a few options to travel to Alicante. The first option is taking the Alicante Aerobus (route C-6), which runs every 20 minutes and costs €3.85 one way. The second option is to take a taxi which will cost you approximately €20, or get a private transfer.

Where to stay in Alicante

Occidental alicante.

Occidental Alicante is my top recommendation for where to stay in Alicante. This 4-star hotel is in the heart of the city, a few minutes from Alicante Market, and has a good variety of restaurants and cafes as well as attractions like the Basilica of St Mary of Alicante.

The hotel offers comfortable and modern rooms with ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a safe, a minibar, and a desk. There’s a daily continental breakfast for a supplement and a small fridge and shelf next to reception where you can get snacks and drinks.

My friend and I stayed in this hotel, which was perfect for us because of its location. We were happy with the room, and the staff were very friendly; they even gave us suggestions on what we couldn’t miss and where to eat.

It’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for a central and comfortable hotel to stay in for a few days rather than an all-inclusive or resort-like hotel with plenty of facilities.

Tips for spending 2 days in Alicante

• Pack the right shoes (trainers) . Exploring Alicante on foot is the best way to uncover all the beautiful places you can find across the city. Many places are flat. However, some neighbourhoods like Santa Cruz and parks are on a hill, or you need to take stairs.
• Don’t fall into the trap of eating at touristy restaurants . There are many restaurants that are clearly targeted to tourists – menus are in several languages, the waiter will try to convince you to have your meal at their restaurant, etc. Avoid these places because you won’t eat high-quality dishes, and you’ll pay much more.
• Check out the event calendar before booking your trip . If you’re up for an authentic experience, you might want to visit Alicante when there’s an important celebration going on. For example, Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos (the Moors and Christians Festival) or the Holy Week.

Costa Blanca is the name given to Alicante's coastline in Spain, which stretches over 200 kilometres. It is an incredibly popular holiday destination for tourists from the UK, because of the marvellous weather and beaches, and low-price flights have been operating to the region since the late 1950s! Costa Blanca is both UK friendly and family friendly, thanks to the huge range of activities available there from beaches and golf to museums and parks.

You can do just about anything you can think of in Costa Blanca, which is why it's so great for kids. Obviosuly there are the beaches, such as Los Náufragos in Torrevieja with its volleyball nets, golden sands and Blue Flag status, or smaller beaches like Serragrosa with its crystal waters, ideal for swimmers. But there are also golf courses (particularly the Villaitana club de golf near Benidorm) and watersports facilities and cultural sites like museums and galleries, such as the La Asegurada Municipal Museum in Alicante which has extensive collections of Spanish art. You will need a couple of weeks on the Costa Blanca just to scratch the surface of its entertainment potential.

But it is an amazing holiday destination, great for kids, which is packed full of amazing sights and activities, with a great climate. Whether you've chosen to visit Sardinia to check out Phoenician or Roman ruins, or just to soak up some sun and enjoy some excellent Sardinian wines, you're sure to have a great time.

As a relatively large autonomous island, Sardinia presents a huge range of activities for a family holiday. From the sunbathing perfection of its Mediterranean beaches to the exploration of sites such as Su Nuraxi di Barumini - a building structure dating from the Megalithic period - there is something to interest everybody. About a quarter of the island is designated as either a National Park or other protected reserve territory, so much of the environment is unspoiled and the naturalists in your family can have a great time spotting incredibly rare creatures such as the Sardinian Fox or the Mediterranean Monk Seal. It's definitely a destination for fans of the great outdoors, but with such a diverse amount of wildlife on display, no one can fail to be captivated by the Sardinian landscape.

Deal alert: Fly to Spain from Chicago, Miami and Washington, DC, from $371 round-trip

The deals for European travel keep coming.

We've just been tipped off to a big sale on flights to a number of popular destinations in Spain, including Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid and Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Departure cities include Chicago, Houston, Miami, Newark and Washington, D.C.

This sale's travel window involves flights between September and March of next year — potentially one of the best times to visit Spain, depending on your destination. For example, fall in the Canary Islands is generally a pleasant affair, thanks to mild temperatures and a low chance of rain. But take note: The flights in this sale all involve layovers.

A carry-on is included in this sale for most airlines. Checking a bag will cost between $75 and $85 each way. However, if you book a fare on TAP Air Portugal and need to bring a large suitcase, consider upgrading to the "Classic" tier for an extra $65 each way. That will cost less than paying for the checked bag fee separately.

Sample flights

Let's start by showing you a great deal out of Chicago to Madrid. You can book flights in September from O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) on TAP Air Portugal for just $379 round-trip.

According to Google Flights, that is an incredible deal for this route.

If you have your sights set on partaking in the legendary party vibes of Ibiza, you can fly from Chicago to Ibiza Airport (IBZ) in late October for less than $500 round-trip on Iberia.

We found flights from Miami to Bilbao at steeply discounted prices. Here's one itinerary we found in November from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Bilbao Airport (BIO) available on Iberia for only $464 round-trip.

The same route in the spring of 2025 is available at $470 round-trip.

There are some good deals from the tri-state area to the Canary Islands as well. TAP Air Portugal has round-trip flights to Tenerife South Airport (TFS) from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in October available for $450, an excellent price. It's also an ideal time to visit the Canaries.

I love knowing when I get a good deal, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Google Flights data shows this price is about as low as it gets for this route.

If you live in the Washington, D.C., area, consider taking a trip to Spain's capital city. TAP Air Portugal has good availability for flights from Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Madrid in the fall for under $400 round-trip. November had lots of options to consider.

Bottom line

This is one of those sales where travelers who can get by with a well-packed carry-on bag can really save big on an overseas ticket.
