Electronic System for Travel Authorization

Stylized computer monitor with ESTA Logo. Electronic System for Travel Authorization: U.S. Department of Homeland Security (Registered Trade Mark).

ESTA is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) . Authorization via ESTA does not determine whether a traveler is admissible to the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers determine admissibility upon travelers’ arrival. The ESTA application collects biographic information and answers to VWP eligibility questions. ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel, though it is recommended that travelers apply as soon as they begin preparing travel plans or prior to purchasing airline tickets.

ETIAS Visa Waiver for Americans

Europe's travel authorization for u.s. citizens.

This website does not belong to, nor is it affiliated with, the EU. The official website of the European Union is europa.eu.

US passport holders will soon need ETIAS to travel to Europe. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System will be operational from 2025.

ETIAS is the new travel permit for Americans and other visa-exempt non-EU citizens visiting European destinations such as France , Italy, and Spain.

U.S. nationals can continue to go to Europe visa-free for short stays by applying for ETIAS .

Do Americans need a visa for Europe?

Americans who meet the ETIAS requirements do not need a visa for Europe. This means that US passport holders can travel to Europe without a visa:

  • For up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • For tourism, business, and short-term study

Visa-free American visitors need to apply for ETIAS .

Americans must hold a visa or residence permit to stay longer than 3 months or to work in Europe.

WHAT DO AMERICANS NEED TO VISIT EUROPE?

This is what Americans need to visit Europe for up to 90 days:

  • Passport valid for 3 months after exiting the Schengen Area
  • ETIAS from 2025

You can find out how to apply for your ETIAS to travel from the US to Europe below.

If you’re staying for longer than 90 days, check the specific requirements for your European destination.

Do American tourists need medical insurance for Europe?

Medical insurance is not an ETIAS requirement . You do not need to provide proof of health insurance to apply.

However, all American travellers are advised to take out insurance that covers medical emergencies and other travel-related incidents.

US citizens need ETIAS for these European countries

Currently, there are 25 european countries that form part of the schengen area:.

  • Czech Republic
  • Netherlands
  • EU Schengen
  • Non-EU Schengen States

Non-Schengen EU States

Non-eu member states:.

  • Liechtenstein
  • Switzerland

Micro-States de facto part of Schengen Area:

  • Vatican City

HOW CAN AMERICANS APPLY FOR ETIAS TO VISIT EUROPE?

As an American, you can apply for ETIAS online. Fill out the electronic form, pay the fees, and submit the application.

You’ll be asked to provide the following information on your application form:

  • Name and surname
  • Nationality
  • Date, place, and country of birth
  • Current address
  • Contact phone number
  • Email address
  • Passport number
  • Passport issue/expiry date
  • Criminal records
  • Travel to conflict areas

Why do Americans need ETIAS to travel to Europe?

Americans need ETIAS because they are visa-exempt non-EU citizens . The ETIAS regulation applies to third-country nationals who do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area. Other eligible nationalities include British, Australian , and Japanese.

ETIAS pre-screens travellers before they arrive in Europe . By identifying potential threats, ETIAS improves the security of the Schengen Area.

How will my information be used by ETIAS?

The information provided on an ETIAS application form is checked against security databases. These include 3 systems managed by eu-Lisa :

  • Schengen Information System (SIS) — database to identify suspected criminals, missing persons and stolen objects.
  • Visa Information System (VIS) —database to share visa information
  • Eurodac —database storing fingerprints of asylum seekers and irregular migrants

If there is an alert in the system, European authorities know to review the application manually. A decision can then be made on whether to grant travel authorisation.

Is my ETIAS information kept secure?

Information provided on ETIAS applications can only be accessed by authorised users. In addition, advanced technology is used to protect data and prevent any unauthorised access.

ETIAS data protection is in line with European law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

When do Americans need to apply for ETIAS?

Americans need to apply for ETIAS for any trips to Europe after 2025.

After the first ETIAS has been issued, US citizens need to apply in 3 years' time or when their passport expires (whichever is sooner). ETIAS is valid with the passport used to apply only.

Americans planning to visit several European countries on one trip do not need to apply for different visa waivers. ETIAS is valid across the Schengen Area.

TRAVELLING TO EUROPE FROM THE US WITH ETIAS

It is also important to note that an approved ETIAS for American citizens does not guarantee entry to Europe; it grants the holder permission to travel to Schengen countries.

The final decision for entry will be made by an immigration officer at Schengen border control. You do not need to print your ETIAS—it is linked to the passport—but you must travel with the passport you used to apply.

There are regulations and restrictions on carrying weapons, importing and exporting large quantities of tobacco, alcohol or perfume, and declaring large amounts of currency when travelling from the USA to Europe. Travellers must check the latest immigration rules.

US and Europe VISA WAIVER BILATERAL AGREEMENTS

US citizens may be able to stay in some European countries beyond the 90-day Schengen limit . The United States has bilateral visa-waiver agreements with several countries.

The Schengen Area nations that have bilateral visa-waiver reciprocal agreements with the US are listed below. The maximum stay is also shown.

  • Belgium (3 months)
  • Denmark (3 months)
  • Italy (3 months)
  • Hungary (90 days)*
  • Portugal (60 days)*
  • Spain (90 days)*
  • France (90 days)
  • Latvia (90 days in half a year)*
  • The Netherlands (90 days)*

Schengen-associated country with a bilateral agreement:

  • Norway (90 days)

*Only ordinary passports are permitted

US passport holders who take advantage of one of these visa waiver bilateral agreements must exit the Schengen Area from that EU nation. On departure, they must fly directly to a third country or transit in a non-Schengen airport.

In addition, travellers must remain in that particular EU Member State. It is not possible to move freely around Europe under the bilateral agreements.

Bilateral agreements between the United States and European Union Member States are subject to change.

EUROPE VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR US CITIZENS

US citizens who do not meet the ETIAS requirements need a visa for Europe. Visa applicants need to make an appointment at the embassy or consulate of their European destinations.

Documentation requirements depend on the type of visa requested but may include:

  • accommodation bookings
  • Round trip flight tickets , or tickets to an onward destination
  • Proof of sufficient financial means to cover the stay in Europe
  • Travel insurance that covers medical care in the Schengen Area
  • A recent, passport-sized, photograph

Visa applications should be started several weeks before the intended travel date.

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) FAQ

Frequently asked questions about electronic travel authorization..

Canada requires an electronic Travel Authorization, also known as eTA, for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air.

1. Why did Canada introduce electronic Travel Authorization?

The system allows the government of Canada to tailor screening requirements based on the risks posed by individual travellers, making it easier and faster for low-risk travellers to come to Canada. Previously, visa-exempt foreign nationals seeking entry to Canada are not systematically screened for admissibility until they arrive at a Canadian port of entry.

The number of visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada on a temporary basis per year is significantly larger than the number of visa-required travellers. For example, visa-exempt foreign nationals, excluding U.S. citizens, represent approximately 74 per cent of foreign nationals who arrive by air in Canada.

2. What, or who, is a visa-exempt foreign national?

A visa-exempt foreign national is a person who is not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, and who does not normally need a visa to enter Canada. See this list .

3. Do I require an eTA in order to visit Canada?

As of March 16, 2016, an eTA is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. Citizens of visa-exempt countries and territories are generally able to visit or transit through Canada with a valid passport and without obtaining a visa for a period of up to six months.

To find out whether citizens of your country are visa-exempt, click here .

4. Are there any exceptions?

A number of exemptions from the requirement to obtain pre-approval to travel will be in place, including:

  • nationals of the United States,
  • individuals already in possession of a Canadian temporary resident visa,
  • certain foreign diplomats,
  • commercial air crew,
  • citizens of France who are residents of St. Pierre and Miquelon,
  • individuals in possession of a visa to enter the United States on a flight bound for that country in transit through Canada, where the sole purpose of the flight stopping in Canada is for purpose of refuelling,
  • individuals transiting through Canada as a passenger on a flight who are in possession of any visa required to enter the country of destination;
  • individuals carrying out official duties as a member of the armed forces of a country that is a designated state for the purposes of the Visiting Forces Act,
  • study or work permit holders re-entering Canada following a visit solely to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon, and
  • Her Majesty in right of Canada and any member of the Royal Family.

5. Do I need an eTA and a visitor visa?

No. An eTA is only required for visa-exempt travellers. Citizens of countries that are not currently visa-exempt country who wish to enter Canada for a temporary purpose, such as tourists, temporary foreign workers (work permits) and international students (study permits), must apply for and be granted a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). The TRV is a document issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office outside Canada, showing that the holder has satisfied the requirements for admission to Canada as a visitor. Temporary Resident Visas may be for single entry or multiple entry.

6. I’m a citizen of the United States. Do I need an eTA to visit Canada by air?

Citizens of the United States do not need an eTA or a visa. However, proper identification must be presented.

7. I have U.S. permanent residency (Green Card). Do I need a visa or an eTA to visit Canada, or can I use my Green Card?

As a U.S. Green Card holder, you do not need a visitor visa (TRV) to travel to Canada. However, you need an eTA if you plan to fly to Canada.

When flying to Canada, you will need to present:

  • proof of status in the U.S. (such as a valid Green Card), and
  • your valid passport that you used to apply for your eTA.

The Canadian border services officer will verify your eTA when you arrive in Canada.

When travelling by land or sea directly from the U.S., you will only need to provide proof of your U.S. lawful permanent resident status (such as your Green Card).

8. When should I apply?

Most eTA applications are approved within minutes of applying, and therefore an application can be made close to the intended departure date. However, it is recommended that travellers requiring an eTA submit an application well in advance of their intended departure date, as some requests may require more time to process. If this is the case for your application, you can expect an email from IRCC within 72 hours informing you what your next steps are.

9. Can someone else complete an application for an eTA on my behalf?

Yes, a friend or family member may complete the online form to apply for an eTA on behalf of an individual travelling to Canada. There is an option to indicate this on the online eTA form.

10. Can I make multiple visits to Canada with an eTA?

Yes, you can make multiple visits to Canada with a valid eTA.

11. Are applications made online?

Yes. If the applicant is unable to make the application by means of the electronic system because of a physical or mental disability, it may be made by another means, including a paper application form.

12. How long does it take to fill out an application?

A straightforward application generally takes only a few minutes to complete and submit.

13. What information is being requested on the eTA application?

The eTA includes the applicant’s name, date and place of birth, gender, address, nationality, and passport and/or travel document information. The application form also asks applicants about the funds they have available for their travel to Canada and contact information.

14. How long does it take to receive authorization once the application is submitted?

Most eTA applications are approved within minutes of applying, though some requests may require more time to process. If this is the case for your application, you can expect an email from IRCC within 72 hours informing you what your next steps are.

15. What do applicants need in order to apply?

Applicants need a passport, a credit card, an email address and a few minutes to complete the online form.

16. Is there a fee? If so, how much is the fee?

A fee of CAD $7.00 will be required for processing.

17. For how long is an eTA valid?

Electronic Travel Authorization is valid for a period of five years from the day on which it is issued to the applicant or until the earliest of the following days, if they occur before the end of that period:

  • the day on which the applicant’s passport or other travel document expires, or
  • the day on which the electronic travel authorization is cancelled, or
  • the day on which a new electronic travel authorization is issued to the applicant.

18. I leave for Canada in a few days but I cannot submit the additional documents required for my eTA application by the requested deadline. Can I still travel to Canada?

If you are waiting for someone (e.g. police department, doctor) or another third party to send you documents, or have problems uploading the documents and cannot submit them by the deadline, you may submit a case specific enquiry to request an extension to the deadline.

If you are not sure how to submit the documents requested for your eTA application, follow these step-by-step instructions

19. Do individuals who obtain a study permit or work permit also need to apply for an eTA?

As of August 1, 2015, individuals who are issued an initial study or work permit will automatically be issued an eTA along with their permit. For work permit or study permit renewal applications, the eTA will not be automatically renewed. If you wish to exit and re-enter Canada by air, you will need to ensure that your eTA is still valid.

20. If an ETA is issued with a work permit/study permit, is it valid for the length of time of the work permit/study permit or is it valid for 5 years (or when the passport expires, if it’s before 5 years)?

The validity of an eTA issued to a visa-exempt foreign national alongside a work or study permit is independent from that of the permit; therefore, the eTA is valid for five years or passport expiry, whichever occurs sooner. That same eTA can be used for multiple entries to Canada, including after March 15, 2016. In addition, the eTA is electronically linked to the individual's passport; therefore, s/he must use that same passport when travelling to Canada.

21. If an individual received a work permit or study permit at a Canadian Port of Entry but did not received a confirmation letter afterwards, how would he or she check whether he or she has been issued an eTA and what the eTA number is?

In this instance, in order to obtain the eTA number, the individuals should submit a case-specific enquiry form to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) explaining the situation. An email response from IRCC will contain the eTA number.

22. If an individual does not know his or her eTA number (for example, if he or she wasn’t told what his or her eTA number when receiving a work permit at a Port of Entry), would he or she then able to apply again for another eTA? Would the system prevent someone from getting two eTAs?

Individuals who find themselves in this situation, or who simply wish to re-apply for a new eTA, may do so at any time. Once the more recent eTA is approved, it will replace the one that already exists. If the individual applies for another eTA, but on a different passport, that eTA – once approved – would not replace the one that already exists; it would be tied to the second passport, which the individual could use when travelling to Canada by air. In either case, the system will not prevent the individual from proceeding.

23. What are the possible reasons for refusal?

Reasons for refusal may be for prior criminality or for medical reasons.

In terms of criminal inadmissibility, something as seemingly minor as an old DUI (Driving Under the Influence) going back a number of years can result in being rejected. Even if the crime was minor in nature, and even if the person’s criminal record has been clean since it took place, Canada still has the right to deny entry.

Some examples of convictions that could make you inadmissible to Canada include: DWAI, Theft, Petty Theft/Larceny, Assault, Drunk & Disorderly Conduct, Obstruction of Justice, Possession of marijuana, cocaine or other controlled substances/drugs, and cautions (issued in the United Kingdom).

More serious reasons for refusal can include membership in terrorist organizations, espionage, participation in war crimes or crimes against humanity, international human rights violations, membership in organized crime groups, criminality, or issues endangering public health, such as tuberculosis.

In 2012–2013, the total number of visa-exempt foreign nationals who arrived in Canada and were deemed inadmissible for entry at air ports of entry was 7,055. This resulted in significant expense, delay and inconvenience for these foreign nationals, other travellers, the airlines and the Canadian government. As such, the eTA system has been brought into operation.

24. If I am refused an eTA, is there some way I can still visit Canada?

Citizens of eTA-required (i.e. TRV-exempt) countries who are refused an eTA may be issued a temporary resident permit depending on the nature and circumstances of the inadmissibility and the continuing rationale for travel. The visa office responsible for the applicant's country may have its own application form for temporary resident permits. Applicants should check the visa office to find out about its specific application procedures.

25. Is the eTA system similar to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) in use by the United States of America?

The eTA system mirrors the current U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) program, and is very similar to it in a number of ways. The governments of Canada and the U.S. have stated that eTA and ESTA systems form a common approach to screening travellers outside the North American perimeter.

26. Are there any age exemptions for eTA?

No. All travellers from eTA-required countries, regardless of their age, need an eTA when they fly to Canada.

27. Will having entered Canada previously trigger a secondary examination?

Records of a previous entry to Canada will not trigger secondary examination, unless those records contain adverse information to that enter in the application for an eTA.

28. Do individuals who have been issued a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document need an ETA in order to land in Canada?

Visa-exempt foreign nationals who have been issued a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document also receives an electronic authorization to travel to Canada and, therefore, does not need an eTA. This process is not visible to these individuals, and they do not need to print out any additional information. They will, however, need to travel to Canada with their valid passport and valid Confirmation of Permanent Residence document.

29. Is the eTA application information available in multiple languages?

Information to help guide you through the online application is available in several foreign languages, including: العربية , 廣東話(繁體字) , 普通話(繁體字) , English, Español , Français , Deutsch , Ελληνικά , Magyarul , Italiano , 日本語 , 한국어 , Polski , Português.

eta travel permit

Israel will soon require all tourists from visa-exempt countries to present an electronic travel authorization (ETA) in order to enter the country, the Population and Immigration Authority announced on Tuesday.

The new requirement is scheduled to go into effect beginning in August 2024. It does not apply to Israeli citizens or visitors from countries that require visas to enter Israel.

The permits will allow visitors to stay up to 90 days and will remain valid for up to two years for multiple trips of 90 days or less. The authorization can be obtained online [link provided below] at a cost of NIS 25.

A statement from the Population and Immigration Authority says: “ The Israeli Population and Immigration Administration is launching the ETA-IL system: Visitors from visa-exempt countries can apply for travel authorization. Those who are eligible will be able to travel to Israel, and stay for up to 90 days or less.

Starting from June 1st, 2024 the ETA-IL system will open for application submissions as a pilot program only for holders of American and German passports. During the pilot phase, submitting an application will be voluntary and exempt from fees.

The system will open to visitors from all visa-exempt countries on July 1st, 2024.

An ETA-IL authorization will stay valid for up to 2 years, or until your current passport expires – whichever comes first

ETIAS Canada

The european travel authorisation for canadian citizens.

Starting 2025, Canadians will need to register online before travelling to Europe. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a new system for visa-exempt non-EU visitors. This includes Canadians.

The European travel authorisation is a new entry requirement for Canadians travelling for tourism, business, and short-term study. It’s quick and easy to apply for ETIAS online.

Get ready for the introduction of the ETIAS for Canadians with etias.ca.

Do Canadians need a visa for Europe?

Canadians do not need a visa to travel to Europe short term. With your Canadian passport, you can travel to Europe visa-free and stay for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or short-term study.

From 2025, Canadians will need to register with ETIAS to enter the Schengen Area , and Cyprus without a visa. Visa-free entry will only be permitted with a valid ETIAS.

European travel visa for long stays for Canadians

Canadians must apply for a visa for Europe to stay more than 3 months . A visa is also required to travel for purposes other than business, tourism, or transit.

To stay long-term, you need to apply for the relevant national visa for your European destination.

Do Canadian residents need a tourist visa for Europe?

European entry requirements for Canadians and other non-EU citizens depend on nationality. Whether a Canadian permanent resident needs a visa for Europe is determined by the country that issued their passport.

Citizens of more than 50 countries can travel to Europe without a visa and will be eligible for ETIAS.

What is ETIAS for Canadians?

ETIAS is a new travel permit for Europe. The ETIAS for Canadian citizens is not a visa . It’s an electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors from outside the EU.

ETIAS secures EU borders by pre-screening travellers before they arrive in Europe. The system helps detect potential security or migration risks presented by visa-exempt visitors.

By registering Canadians and other non-EU passport holders entering European countries , ETIAS also improves European border management.

ETIAS is similar to the Canadian eTA that foreign visitors need to enter visa-free.

How ETIAS for Canadian citizens works

ETIAS for Canadian citizens works by cross-referencing applicants' information with various security databases.

When Canadian passport holders apply for ETIAS , your personal details, travel information, and answers to security questions are checked against databases like the Schengen Information System (SIS), Interpol databases, and Europol data , among others.

This process helps in identifying any potential security, irregular migration, or high epidemic risks.

Most applications are approved following automatic processing. If a potential risk is detected, the application is reviewed manually by the responsible ETIAS National Unit.

ETIAS improves the traveller experience

ETIAS improves the way Canadians travel to Europe . As a tourist, you can enjoy greater peace of mind knowing that other travellers have also undergone ETIAS security checks.

The European travel authorisation for Europe also makes border processes more efficient. Immigration procedures are expected to be faster— security checks are carried out in advance, rather than at the border .

Despite being an additional step Canadians need to take when visiting Europe , ETIAS registration improves the overall traveller experience.

The ETIAS structure

Here’s are some of the groups responsible for the functioning of ETIAS:

  • ETIAS Central Unit: checks that the data stored in the application file and the personal data recorded in the ETIAS system is correct and up to date. It defines, evaluates, tests and reviews specific indicators of the ETIAS screening rules
  • ETIAS National Units: responsible for assessing travel authorisation applications referred to them from the automatic process. They can issue an opinion if consulted by other member States’ ETIAS National Units
  • Europol: will establish and manage the ETIAS watchlist. ETIAS National Units will be able for consultation
  • EU-LISA: responsible for developing and operating the ETIAS information system
  • ETIAS Screening Board: this is an advisory team that will be made up of representatives from ETIAS National Units and Europol. The board can be consulted for the definition, evaluation, and revision of risk indicators
  • European Border and Coast Guard Agency: they ensure the creation and management of an ETIAS Central Unit

Key information about the travel permit for Europe

Canadians can continue to enjoy visa-free entry to Europe with ETIAS. Here are the most important facts you need to know about the ETIAS permit to travel to Europe .

* Canadians need the EU ETIAS to transit if they leave the international transit area of the airport.

Travelling from Canada to Europe with ETIAS

Canadians must have an approved and valid ETIAS to travel to countries in the Schengen Area.

When your ETIAS is approved, it’s linked to the Canadian passport you used to apply. You do not need to carry additional documents with you when travelling to Europe — ETIAS is automatically verified during passport checks.

ETIAS does not guarantee entry to European countries . Border checks are carried out and, passengers who do not meet the entry conditions will be denied entry.

It’s important that you apply for ETIAS and travel to Europe using the same passport. If you replace your passport for any reason, you need to apply for a new ETIAS.

Canadians need ETIAS to travel to Europe by air, land, or sea .

Moving around the Schengen Area with ETIAS as a Canadian citizen

You need ETIAS to cross an external Schengen border, for example when travelling from Canada to France.

Once you’ve entered the Schengen zone, you will not face further border checks—there are no internal borders in the travel zone. You should, however, carry your passport with attached ETIAS with you as you travel around.

Visit Spain, Italy, Germany, and other top tourist destinations in Europe with one permit.

Understanding the 90/180 rule for Canadians in Europe

To avoid overstaying in Europe, you need to understand the 90/180 rule.

90-day allowance

You can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This doesn't have to be a continuous stay.

You can enter and leave the Schengen Area as often as you like, but the total number of days spent in the area must not exceed 90 days within any 180-day period.

Rolling 180-day window

The 180-day period is a rolling window. It’s always counted backwards from the current day.

For example, if you're planning to enter the Schengen Area on December 1st, you'll look back 180 days from December 1st to see how many days you've already been in the Schengen Area during that period.

Count your days

To stay compliant with the rule, keep track of your travel days. Every day you are in the Schengen Area counts towards the 90-day limit, including the day you arrive and the day you depart.

No reset by leaving

You can't reset the 90-day count by leaving the Schengen Area for a short period and then returning. The count of 90 days is cumulative within the 180-day window.

All Visitors to Israel Will Soon Need an Electronic Permit to Enter

eta travel permit

Beginning in August 2024, visitors to Israel from countries where they are not required to obtain a visa, will be required to obtain an ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter the country.

Each ETA-IL will be valid for a two-year period, and will allow holders to make multiple trips of 90 days or less within that period. If any single visit will be for more than 90 days, the visitor will need to request an extension.

The ETA-IL will be made available after filling out a simple application online . There will be a fee of 25 NIS.

According to the website, the ETA-IL may take as long as 72 hours to process, potentially adding a huge hurdle to those who may need to make a sudden trip.

The ETA-IL system will open for applications starting on June 1 as a pilot program for holders of American and German passports and will be available free of charge.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

Find out about electronic travel authorization (eTA)

Français | Español | Deutsch

Other language

  • Português (Brasil)

Most travellers need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport.

Before you apply , find out what you need to travel to Canada.

What is an Electronic Travel Authorization?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically linked to a traveller’s passport. It is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.  If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA.

With a valid eTA, you can travel to Canada as often as you want for short stays (normally for up to six months at a time). You do not need an eTA for travel within Canada.

An eTA doesn’t guarantee entry to Canada. When you arrive, a border services officer will ask to see your passport and other documents. You must convince the officer that you are eligible for entry into Canada .

Who needs an eTA to travel to Canada?

There are 4 types of travellers:

  • Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. These travellers do not need an eTA when arriving by car, bus, train or boat (including a cruise ship).
  • Citizens from select visa-required countries may be eligible to apply for an eTA, instead of a visa, to travel to Canada by air . However, these travellers need a visitor visa when arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including a cruise ship.
  • Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, need a valid Canadian passport . American-Canadians can travel with a valid Canadian or U.S. passport.
  • Important – former residents of Canada: Permanent resident (PR) status does not expire. If you once lived in Canada many years ago , you could still have PR status . Learn more to avoid travel delays .
  • Visa-required including alien’s passport holders and stateless individuals.
  • U.S. citizens are exempt from the eTA requirement and must carry proper identification such as a valid U.S. passport.
  • They must carry official proof of status (or an equivalent status document) and a valid passport from their country of nationality (or an equivalent travel document).
  • See the complete list of documents for lawful permanent residents of the U.S.

You need an official proof of status as a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., such as one of the following:

  • valid permanent resident card (Form I-551)
  • foreign passport with an unexpired temporary I-551 stamp (also known as an Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunication [ADIT] stamp)
  • foreign passport with a temporary I-551 printed notation (“Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year”) on a machine-readable immigrant visa upon endorsement with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection admission stamp
  • expired permanent resident card (Form I-551) with Form I-797 (Notice of Action) for pending Form I-751 (Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence) or Form I-829 (Petition by Investor to Remove Conditions on Permanent Resident Status)
  • expired permanent resident card (Form I-551) with Form I-797 (Notice of Action) for pending Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card [Green Card])
  • valid re-entry permit (Form I-327)
  • Form I-94 with an unexpired temporary I-551 stamp (ADIT stamp) and a passport-style photo

See the complete list of eTA exceptions .

How do I apply for an eTA for travel to Canada?

Only apply for an eTA on this official Government of Canada website.

Applying for an eTA is a simple online process that takes just a few minutes to complete. Most applicants get their eTA approval (via an email) within minutes. However, some requests can take several days to process if you're asked to submit supporting documents. It is best to get an eTA before you book your flight to Canada.

An eTA costs CAD $7. You can only apply and pay for one person at a time.

To complete the form, you will need your passport, a credit card, and an email address. You must also answer a few questions.

Avoid this common mistake when you apply

If you enter the wrong passport number on the eTA form, you will have problems flying to Canada.

Use the eTA help guide ( PDF , 1.62 MB ) and follow the instructions to enter your passport number correctly.

Use the number that is at the top of your passport information page – the page with your photo.

What to bring to the airport

When we approve your eTA, it will be linked to the passport you used to apply . You need to present this passport when you check-in to your flight to Canada.

The airline staff will scan your passport to confirm that you have a valid eTA. If you do not have one, you won’t be able to board your flight.

Apply for an eTA

Confirm passport number is correct

Avoid hassles at the airport: Once your eTA is approved , check that the passport number included in your eTA approval email matches the number in your passport. If they don’t match, you need to apply for a new eTA .

Environmentalists urge California wildlife officials to investigate bottled water operation

Environmental activists have opened a new front in their long-running fight against a company that pipes water from the San Bernardino Mountains and bottles it for sale as Arrowhead brand bottled water.

In a petition to the state, several environmental groups and local activists called for an investigation by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, arguing that the company BlueTriton Brands is harming wildlife habitat and species by extracting water that would otherwise flow in Strawberry Creek.

Those who oppose the taking of water from San Bernardino National Forest want the state agency to assess the environmental effects and uphold protections under state law, said Rachel Doughty, a lawyer for the environmental nonprofit Story of Stuff Project.

“They’ve dewatered the creek,” Doughty said.

If the company weren’t siphoning water in its network of pipes, she said, Strawberry Creek “would be habitat for endangered species, it would be providing a downstream water supply, it would support fish, and it can’t do any of those things without water.”

The coalition of environmental groups and activists said in their May 13 petition that the state agency should demand the company apply for an authorization — called a streambed alteration agreement — for its pipes and other infrastructure, and should examine whether the ongoing diversion of water violates state environmental laws.

The groups said the company’s taking of water has “caused the extirpation of native species and the destruction of riparian habitat — clearcut harm to the public trust.” They urged the state to “take all appropriate enforcement action.”

Aggressive and impactful reporting on climate change, the environment, health and science.

Activists who have been trying to shut down the company’s bottled water pipeline made their appeal to the wildlife agency eight months after the State Water Resources Control Board voted to order the company to halt its “unauthorized diversions” of water from springs in the San Bernardino Mountains.

State officials determined the company has been unlawfully diverting water without valid water rights. But BlueTriton Brands sued to challenge that decision in Fresno County Superior Court, arguing the process was rife with problems and that the company is entitled to the water.

A spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said the agency has received the petition and is evaluating it.

BlueTriton Brands responded to the petition in an email.

“Responsible and proactive water stewardship is central to everything we do. We’re proud of the work we’ve done and continue to do in Strawberry Canyon, studying, reporting, and managing our operations to help protect the land and natural resources,” the company said. “We will continue to operate in compliance with all state and federal laws.”

The company also said it will “partner with people in our communities, governments, policy makers, businesses, and consumers to sustainably protect and shape our shared future.”

But Steve Loe, a retired biologist who previously worked for the San Bernardino National Forest, said the state should require the company to stop taking water from the creek and the ecosystem.

“The stream has been completely dried up by BlueTriton, and BlueTriton needs to put some water back in the stream to meet state and federal requirements,” Loe said. “Restoring water back to Strawberry Creek will make a huge difference in the watershed for all of the plant and animal species.”

California orders bottled water company to stop ‘unauthorized’ piping from springs

California regulators have ordered the company that sells Arrowhead bottled water to stop taking much of the water it pipes from a national forest.

Sept. 19, 2023

Restoring water to the habitat would help endangered bird species such as the southwestern willow flycatcher and least Bell’s vireo, he said, as well as other species including the mountain yellow-legged frog and southern rubber boa.

He said a flowing creek could also support the return of native fish species, such as Santa Ana speckled dace.

In the petition, Loe and others cited historical records describing the springs and the creek nearly a century ago, including field notes and reports from W.P. Rowe, an engineer who surveyed the watershed starting in 1929.

Rowe wrote that Strawberry Creek flowed on the south slope of the San Bernardino Mountains from a “source at a group of springs” and flowed in a canyon filled with “alder, sycamore, dogwood and cedar trees together with ferns and thimble berry bushes.”

Loe said the records show that before the water was tapped for bottling, the stream was flowing and supported a thriving riparian habitat, which is now largely dry.

“It’s public water,” Loe said. “And the public has a right to push for its protection.”

“I want water back in the creek this summer,” he said.

In the decision that is being argued in court, the state water board ordered the company to stop taking water for bottling from most of its water-collection tunnels and boreholes in the mountains north of San Bernardino.

Records show about 158 acre-feet, or 51 million gallons, flowed through the company’s network of pipes in 2022.

The system of 4-inch steel pipes collects water that flows from various sites on the steep mountainside above the creek.

The pipeline runs to a roadside tank, and some of the water is hauled away on trucks to be bottled and sold as Arrowhead 100% Mountain Spring Water.

Arrowhead bottled water company sues to continue piping from California forest

California ordered a bottled water company to stop taking much of the water it pipes from a national forest. BlueTriton Brands is suing to challenge the ruling.

Oct. 27, 2023

Local activists have campaigned for years calling for state and federal authorities to shut down the bottled water pipeline. Controversy over the use of water from the national forest erupted after a 2015 investigation by the Desert Sun revealed that the U.S. Forest Service was allowing Nestlé to continue siphoning water using a permit that listed 1988 as the expiration date.

The Forest Service subsequently began a review of Nestlé’s permit, and in 2018 granted a new permit for up to five years. The revelations about Nestlé piping water out of the national forest sparked an outpouring of opposition and prompted several complaints to California regulators questioning the company’s water rights claims, which led to the state’s investigation .

BlueTriton Brands took over the bottled water business in 2021 when Nestlé’s North American bottled water division was purchased by private-equity firm One Rock Capital Partners and investment firm Metropoulos & Co.

BlueTriton and prior owners of the business have for years had a federal “special-use” permit allowing them to use the pipeline and other water infrastructure in the San Bernardino National Forest.

The Forest Service has been charging an annual permit fee, currently $2,500 per year. There has been no fee for using the water.

BlueTriton’s 2018 permit expired in August, and the company has submitted an application to renew the permit, which Forest Service officials are reviewing, said Gustavo Bahena, a spokesperson for the San Bernardino National Forest.

“Because Blue Triton had a timely request for renewal of the permit, the current permit remains in effect… until the Forest renders a decision on their new request,” Bahena said in an email.

Other groups that are petitioning the state include Save Our Forest Assn., Center for Biological Diversity, the local chapter of the Sierra Club, Southern California Native Freshwater Fauna Working Group and the Tri-County Conservation League.

Amanda Frye, an activist who has taken a leading role in the campaign, said she thinks the Forest Service is failing to uphold its responsibility to manage public land and resources.

“We still have a dry creek,” Frye said.

“Something’s got to change,” she said. “We have the right to have these resources protected.”
