Mr. Big Adds Dozens of Dates to ‘The Big Finish’ Tour

Mr. Big have announced 2024 dates in which they are putting on their signature top hats and old shoes one last time on a worldwide tour, aptly titled “The BIG Finish.” Since the band’s original drummer and co-founder, Pat Torpey, lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, the band felt it was time to mark the end of this chapter of their legacy. The first leg took the band to Japan and Southeast Asia in July and August 2023 while shows in South America, Europe, and the U.S. will launch in early 2024 with more to be announced. Their nightly set includes a performance of their 1991 breakthrough album, Lean Into It , including their #1 smash, “To Be With You,” in its entirety.

After 35 years, the band felt it was finally time to come together for one final, extended curtain call. “We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,” said bassist-vocalist Billy Sheehan in the tour’s original March 6, 2023, announcement. Guitarist-vocalist Paul Gilbert added, “We’re in the process of making sure we come up with a suitably big entertainment extravaganza to go along with our music.” Lead vocalist Eric Martin said, “If we were in the movie business, we’d just put it all up in lights and say, ‘Welcome to The BIG Finish!’ Seriously, I’m glad we’re getting a chance to do it all onstage together as Mr. Big again and raise a flag to everything we’ve done as a band over the years.”

Joining Mr. Big on drums for the special tour will be longtime friend of the band Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train), stepping in for Torpey . “Nick has a vocal range similar to Pat’s, and he’ll be able to do the parts Pat did with a similar finesse,” said Sheehan, who turned 70 on March 19. “It’s a big relief because Mr. Big has always been heavy on the harmonies. When the band began, we really relied on each other. We knew each guy would do exactly what he needed to do vocally and to do it righteously, on key, and in time. It’s difficult to find a drummer who sings in that range, but Nick has the voice we really need onstage.”

Said Martin, “I love playing with these guys. And if I’m being honest, I don’t want it to ever end. I’m the guy who just knows we still have that special spark together, and I always want to keep the torch burning. But if it really is the end, then I want us all to have a happy ending together. We’re a great live band. I want everybody to come out and see us, because we want to blow you away and have you all think as you’re leaving, ‘Mr. Big really is the real thing.’”

MR. BIG “The BIG Finish” Final World Tour Coming To The U.S.

After 35 years of being addicted to that perpetually electrifying performance rush, the band feels it’s finally time to collectively hang up their top hats

the big finish tour

Earlier this summer, MR. BIG–Eric Martin (lead vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar and vocals), Billy Sheehan (bass and vocals), Nick D’Virgilio (drums and vocals)–put on their signature top hats and old shoes for the launch of their last worldwide tour, aptly titled “The BIG Finish.” Since the band’s original drummer and co-founder, Pat Torpey, lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, the band now feels it’s time to mark the end of this chapter of their legacy.

The first leg kicked off in Japan and Southeast Asia in July and August, where the band performed for hundreds of thousands of loyal fans at 11 sold-out shows including Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Now MR. BIG is ready to bring “The BIG Finish” to South America, Europe, and the U.S. The first batch of shows throughout the States will start January 12, 2024 in Houston, TX at the Rise Rooftop. More U.S. dates will be announced soon. Ticket info can be found on the band’s  official website .

One particular aspect of this upcoming final run that MR. BIG are excited about to a man is the decision to perform the entirety of their breakthrough Platinum-selling 1991 album LEAN INTO IT from start to finish as a featured highlight of the live setlist. (To be sure, the full setlist will encompass Mr. Big’s entire career.) Fact is, LEAN INTO IT is the perfect litmus testament to the band’s inherent dexterity at blending a variety of styles together, whether it’s the heady rocking brew of “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind,” the power-drilled and power-chorded identity checklist “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy,” or the truly heartfelt sentiments found within “To Be With You,” MR. BIG’s chart-topping, worldwide #1 smash hit single.

“I love playing the entire LEAN INTO IT record,” says Paul Gilbert. “We’ve never done that until now, and the songs flow together really well. It’s a first-class seat in the time-travel-machine back to 1992! I was amazed that during my guitar solo, the whole audience started singing along with me! That was the first time that has ever happened! That’s what a live show is about!”

“We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,” asserts Billy Sheehan. Notes Eric Martin, “If we were in the movie business, we’d just put it all up in lights and say, ‘Welcome to The BIG Finish!’ Seriously, I’m glad we’re getting a chance to do it all onstage together as MR. BIG again and raise a flag to everything we’ve done as a band over the years.”

Joining MR. BIG on drums for this special final world tour will be longtime friend of the band Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train), stepping in for founding drummer/vocalist Pat Torpey, who sadly passed away in 2018 following his heroic battle with Parkinson’s disease. “We found a wonderful drummer in Nick, and he’s got a great voice too,” confirms Sheehan. “Nick has a vocal range similar to Pat’s, and he’ll be able to do the parts Pat did with a similar finesse. It’s a big relief because MR. BIG has always been heavy on the harmonies. When the band began, we really relied on each other. We knew each guy would do exactly what he needed to do vocally and to do it righteously, on key, and in time. It’s difficult to find a drummer who sings in that range, but Nick has the voice we really need onstage.”

After 35 years of being addicted to that perpetually electrifying performance rush, the band feels it’s finally time to collectively hang up their top hats and shoes after coming together for one final, extended curtain call — a curtain call that will take them on an all-out world tour commencing in 2023 that will go for as long as, well, as long as MR. BIG fans demand it.

Make sure to catch them before they bring down that final curtain, because when it’s through, it’s through.

MR. BIG ANNOUNCE “THE BIG FINISH” FINAL WORLD TOUR U.S. DATES STARTING JANUARY 12TH IN HOUSTON, TX

  • September 14, 2023

Earlier this summer,  Mr. Big  —  Eric Martin  (lead vocals), Paul Gilbert  (guitar and vocals), Billy Sheehan  (bass and vocals), Nick D’Virgilio  (drums and vocals) — put on their signature top hats and old shoes for the launch of their last worldwide tour, aptly titled  The BIG Finish . Since the band’s original drummer and co-founder  Pat Torpey  lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, the band now feels it’s time to mark the end of this chapter of their legacy.

The first leg kicked off in Japan and Southeast Asia in July and August, where the band performed for hundreds of thousands of loyal fans at 11 sold-out shows including Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Now Mr. Big is ready to bring  The BIG Finish  to South America, Europe, and the U.S. The first batch of shows throughout the States will start January 12th, 2024 in Houston, Texas at the Rise Rooftop. More U.S. dates will be announced soon. Ticket info can be found on the band’s official web site .

One particular aspect of this upcoming final run that the band are excited about is the decision to perform the entirety of their breakthrough platinum-selling 1991 album  Lean Into It  from start to finish as a featured highlight of the live setlist. (To be sure, the full setlist will encompass Mr. Big’s entire career.) Fact is,  Lean Into It  is the perfect litmus testament to the band’s inherent dexterity at blending a variety of styles together, whether it’s the heady rocking brew of  Green-Tinted Sixties Mind , the power-drilled and power-chorded identity checklist  Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy  or the truly heartfelt sentiments found within  To Be With You , Mr. Big’s chart-topping, worldwide No. 1 smash hit single.

“I love playing the entire  Lean Into It  record,” says Gilbert. “We’ve never done that until now, and the songs flow together really well. It’s a first-class seat in the time-travel-machine back to 1992. I was amazed that during my guitar solo, the whole audience started singing along with me. That was the first time that has ever happened! That’s what a live show is about.”

“We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,” asserts Sheehan. Notes Martin , “If we were in the movie business, we’d just put it all up in lights and say, ‘Welcome to The BIG Finish . Seriously, I’m glad we’re getting a chance to do it all onstage together as Mr. Big again and raise a flag to everything we’ve done as a band over the years.”

Joining Mr. Big on drums for this special final world tour will be longtime friend of the band  Nick D’Virgilio  ( Spock’s Beard ,  Big Big Train ),stepping in for founding drummer/vocalist Pat Torpey, who sadly passed away in 2018 following his heroic battle with Parkinson’s disease.

U.S. tour dates:

Jan. 12 – Houston, TX – Rise Rooftop Jan. 13 – Dallas, TX – The Factory In Deep Ellum Jan. 17 – Key West, FL – Rokisland Fest Jan. 20 – Orlando, FL – The Plaza Live Jan. 21 – Clearwater, FL – Capitol Theatre Jan. 23 – Atlanta, GA – Variety Playhouse Jan. 24 – Nashville, TN – Ryman Auditorium Jan. 26 – Cincinnati, OH – Ludlow Garage Jan. 28 – Warrendale, PA – Jergel’S Rhythm Grille Jan. 30 – Portland, ME – Aura Jan. 31 – Patchogue, NY – Patchogue Theater Feb. 2 – Sayreville, NJ – Starland Ballroom Feb. 3 – Ridgefield, CT – Ridgefield Playhouse Feb. 6 – New York, NY – Sony Hall Feb. 7 – Derry, NH – Tupelo Music Hall Feb. 9 – Glenside, PA – Keswick Theatre Feb. 14 – Wabash, IN – Honeywell Center Feb. 16 – Des Plains, IL – Des Plains Theatre Feb. 17 – Green Bay, WI – Epic Event Center Feb. 20 – Detroit, MI – Royal Oak Theatre Feb. 21 – Minneapolis, MN – Fitzgerald Theater Feb. 23 – Wichita, KS – The Cotillion Feb. 24 – Oklahoma City, OK – Diamond Ballroom

I’ve heard they’re quite huge in Japan. To have Billy and Paul in the same band is really quite incredible. They’re both such top notch players, and I know Nick is very good as well. Best of luck boys!

I hope this tour comes to my area, I’d love to see it.

Saw them on the “Lean Into It” tour. Band was incredible. Paul Gilbert is a shredder guitarist.

Mr. Big Announces World Tour 'The Big Finish'

The U.S. will launch in early 2024 and will be announced soon.

MR. BIG is putting on their signature top hats and old shoes one last time for a worldwide tour, aptly titled "The BIG Finish." Since the band's original drummer and co-founder, Pat Torpey, lost his battle with Parkinson's disease in 2018, the band now feels it's time to mark the end of this chapter of their legacy.

The first leg will take the band to Japan and Southeast Asia in July and August, while shows in South America, Europe, and the U.S. will launch in early 2024 and will be announced soon.

"We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it," asserts bassist/vocalist Billy Sheehan. Notes guitarist/vocalist Paul Gilbert, "We're in the process of making sure we come up with a suitably big entertainment extravaganza to go along with our music. And since our music has resonated so wonderfully in places all over the world, we're going to play in as many of those places as we can."

Submits lead vocalist Eric Martin, "If we were in the movie business, we'd just put it all up in lights and say, 'Welcome to The BIG Finish!' Seriously, I'm glad we're getting a chance to do it all onstage together as MR. BIG again and raise a flag to everything we've done as a band over the years."

After 35 years of being addicted to that perpetually electrifying performance rush, the band feels it's finally time to collectively hang up their top hats and shoes after coming together for one final, extended curtain call - a curtain call that will take them on an all-out world tour commencing in 2023 that will go for as long as, well, as long as MR. BIG fans demand it.

Joining MR. BIG on drums for this special final world tour will be longtime friend of the band Nick D'Virgilio (Spock's Beard, Big Big Train), stepping in for founding drummer/vocalist Pat Torpey, who sadly passed away in 2018 following his heroic battle with Parkinson's disease. "We found a wonderful drummer in Nick, and he's got a great voice too," confirms Sheehan.

"Nick has a vocal range similar to Pat's, and he'll be able to do the parts Pat did with a similar finesse. It's a big relief because MR. BIG has always been heavy on the harmonies. When the band began, we really relied on each other. We knew each guy would do exactly what he needed to do vocally and to do it righteously, on key, and in time. It's difficult to find a drummer who sings in that range, but Nick has the voice we really need onstage."

Concurs Gilbert, "Nick gets close to the spirit of Pat Torpey. Billy, Eric, and I have been really happy with the music we've already shared back and forth. I'm impressed with Nick's level of musical adaptability and breadth of skill. He and I have done some recording together, and I was blown away with his groove, and how he just played what fit the song. If the song requires him to be more progressive and stand out, he will stand out. But if the song requires him to groove, he will groove. That's actually a rare thing, and it really fits in with what we do in MR. BIG."

"I love the fact that Nick was a fan of Pat Torpey and wants to keep our BIG sound intact," says Eric. "When I first saw his audition demo video of the LEAN INTO IT song 'Lucky This Time,' Nick was playing drums with those signature Pat snare hits and singing harmonies spot on to what Pat used to do. It gave me goosebumps!! I am so thrilled to have this man who will be filling some mighty BIG shoes join us on our last tour."

Big's entire career.)

Fact is, LEAN INTO IT is the perfect litmus testament to the band's inherent dexterity at blending a variety of styles together, whether it's the heady rocking brew of "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind," the power-drilled and power-chorded identity checklist "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy," or the truly heartfelt sentiments found within "To Be With You," MR. BIG's chart-topping, worldwide #1 smash hit single.

For his part, Martin the songwriter remains eternally grateful for the never-ending success of "To Be With You," but the essence of MR. BIG goes much, much deeper than that. "That song helped put the stamps in our passports," Martin allows, "but we really nailed it on LEAN INTO IT. I'm still in awe of how Billy and Paul play on that album, because they're such brilliant players. I used to call them the dynamic duo. And Pat Torpey was an underrated drummer, in my opinion. I mean, just listen to his tone! LEAN INTO IT is totally indicative of who we are as a band."

Explains Sheehan, "LEAN INTO IT was put together much like a movie, with an opening scene that lets us get into the dialogue and find out what the story is. And then you get the love scene, the car chase, and the punchline ending. I think it's a perfectly sequenced album."

Observes Gilbert, "Some people thought we had brought in professional background singers to do all those harmonies on Lean Into It, but no, it's really us. We always felt like we had something to prove whenever we went on the road and did all that singing ourselves, just to show everyone that we really could do it."

Just like the consummate performers they are, MR. BIG still want to reach into your dreams. "I hope the people who come see our shows get to feel what it's like when musicians get together and really play and sing the songs they wrote," offers Sheehan. "We want the audience to be one with us, and feel our evening together was a magical and beautiful event."

Theorizes Gilbert, "Music is like time travel. You can hear something that takes you right back to 1992, and it reminds you exactly of what was happening back then. On this tour, I want to give people the opportunity to time travel like that and go, 'These guys are on fire!' Good music is timeless."

Concludes Martin, "I love playing with these guys. And if I'm being honest, I don't want it to ever end. I'm the guy who just knows we still have that special spark together, and I always want to keep the torch burning. But if it really is the end, then I want us all to have a happy ending together. We're a great live band. I want everybody to come out and see us, because we want to blow you away and have you all think as you're leaving, 'MR. BIG really is the real thing.'"

Indeed, when it comes to harnessing the real thing that best represents the unyielding power of rock & roll, MR. BIG have truly got what it takes. Make sure to catch them before they bring down that final curtain, because when it's through, it's through. MR. BIG really do want to be with you at least one more time, and they'd be more than honored to see you, one and all, somewhere around the world.

Billy Sheehan and Mr. Big Announce “The Big Finish” World Tour

Kevin Johnson

Five years after the loss of drummer and co-founder Pat Torpey, Mr. Big has announced a new world tour called “The Big Finish.” Their extended goodbye run will feature the band performing the album Lean Into It , including the smash hit “To Be With You” in its entirety.

“We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,” says bassist Billy Sheehan .

The announced tour dates are set for this summer in Asia. They kick off July 20th in Nagoya, Japan, and will head to Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Additional dates in the United States, South America, and Europe are coming next year.

The lineup of Sheehan, guitarist Paul Gilbert, and vocalist Eric Martin will be filled out by drummer Nick D’Virgilio of Spock’s Beard and Big Big Train. While Torpey’s spot in the band can never be truly filled, Sheehan says D’Virgilio is the perfect fit.

“We found a wonderful drummer in Nick, and he’s got a great voice, too,” he explains.

Lean Into It went Platinum after its release in 1991 with “To Be With You” becoming a #1 hit single around the world. Sheehan describes the album like a movie with different scenes, and Martin agrees the record was more than just the popularity of one song.

“That song helped put the stamps in our passports,” Martin allows, “but we really nailed it on ‘Lean Into It.’ I’m still in awe of how Billy and Paul play on that album, because they’re such brilliant players. I used to call them the dynamic duo. And Pat Torpey was an underrated drummer, in my opinion. I mean, just listen to his tone! ‘Lean Into It’ is totally indicative of who we are as a band.”

We’ll keep you updated on more dates as they become available.

The BIG Finish Tour: MR. BIG’s Farewell Journey

Mr. Big: “The BIG Finish”: Farewell Tour with Special Guest Moe Jo’s Jukebox

MR. BIG  is putting on their signature top hats and old shoes one last time for a worldwide tour, aptly titled “The BIG Finish.” Since the band’s original drummer and co-founder, Pat Torpey, lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, the band now feels it’s time to mark the end of this chapter of their legacy.

“We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,”  asserts bassist/vocalist  Billy Sheehan . Notes guitarist/vocalist  Paul Gilbert ,  “We’re in the process of making sure we come up with a suitably big entertainment extravaganza to go along with our music. And since our music has resonated so wonderfully in places all over the world, we’re going to play in as many of those places as we can.”  Submits lead vocalist  Eric Martin ,  “If we were in the movie business, we’d just put it all up in lights and say, ‘Welcome to The BIG Finish!’ Seriously, I’m glad we’re getting a chance to do it all onstage together as MR. BIG again and raise a flag to everything we’ve done as a band over the years.”

Joining MR. BIG on drums for this special final world tour will be longtime friend of the band Nick D’Virgilio  (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train), stepping in for founding drummer/vocalist Pat Torpey.

Big’s entire career.) LEAN INTO IT is the perfect litmus testament to the band’s inherent dexterity at blending a variety of styles together, whether it’s the heady rocking brew of “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind,” the power-drilled and power-chorded identity checklist “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy,” or the truly heartfelt sentiments found within “To Be With You,” MR. BIG’s chart-topping, worldwide #1 smash hit single.

When it comes to harnessing the real thing that best represents the unyielding power of rock & roll, MR. BIG have truly got what it takes. Make sure to catch them before they bring down that final curtain, because when it’s through, it’s through.

Moe Jo’s Jukebox is a phenomenal rock band with lead vocalist Moe Carrara, aka Tony Ocean, Mike Restivo, Joe Frehe, Marty Hitzeman, Jim Petti, Tom Quinian and Andy Banathy and play all of the songs that will get you out of your seat!

MR. BIG played its first concert with new touring drummer Nick D'Virgilio on July 16 at the Majiao Music Festival in China.

In an April 2023 interview with Border City Rock Talk , D'Virgilio spoke about how he landed the gig as MR. BIG 's new touring drummer, five years after the passing of Pat Torpey . The 54-year-old Nick , who has spent the last nine years working for the Indiana-based online retailer of music instruments and audio gear Sweetwater , said: "It stemmed through Sweetwater . I've known Paul [ Gilbert , MR. BIG guitarist]; Paul was the one guy I knew most. I met Pat , and I met Billy [ Sheehan , MR. BIG bassist] — Gosh — at a music trade show back in the day. And I was definitely a fan of the band. I listened to a lot of Pat 's drumming way before I ever met him in person. But at Sweetwater , we do a lot of recording workshops and we get artists in to come and people pay to come to the studio and hang in the studio with the artists that come in. Paul does it quite a bit; he's been there a bunch. Billy was there a while back as well, but Paul 's been there a number of times. And I've been able to play as his rhythm section for these recording workshops. And I also had Paul play on a song on my solo record called 'Invisible' that I put out in 2020. Through all of this stuff, we got to just jamming some more stuff. And I know Paul through Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse and a lot of circles of musicians. After the last thing we did at Sweetwater , Paul just sent me an e-mail and asked if I would be interested in going on tour with MR. BIG in Asia. Now, this was last July, when he first sent me the e-mail, so nine, 10 months ago or so. And I immediately said 'yes'. I think I said 'fuck yes', all in bold letters… So then I went sort of hog wild here in my studio and I videotaped and multi-tracked my drums. I kind of just went hog wild, sending back these demos of me playing and then singing all the parts. So I sang the lead vocal, and then I sang Pat 's parts too. Since [it was an] audition, I figured I'd put my best foot forward. Long story short, they said, 'Yeah, we'd love to do it. And you're in,' basically. So that's kind of how it all happened. It came out of the blue."

D'Virgilio went on to say that he is looking forward to performing with MR. BIG on the band's worldwide tour, which will take the band to the U.S. will launch in early 2024.

"You've been in this music business for a long time. Especially as you get older, the phone doesn't ring as often," he said. "I live in Indiana now. I'm not in California and L.A. where I grew up. So I have a great job, but I'm not where all the action is all the time. So the phone doesn't ring quite like that, maybe like it used to 10, 20 years ago, so it was super exciting to get that e-mail from Paul ."

As a session musician and touring artist, Nick has worked with many different kinds of artists and bands, from TEARS FOR FEARS , Sheryl Crow and Kevin Gilbert to Peter Gabriel and Eric Burdon and the ANIMALS . In 1996, Nick took Phil Collins 's place in GENESIS and played on their "Calling All Stations" album. He has also carved out a major presence in the progressive rock world with his bands, SPOCK'S BEARD and BIG BIG TRAIN .

Before joining the Sweetwater team, Nick spent almost five years touring with Cirque Du Soleil 's "Totem" as drummer, vocalist, and assistant bandleader.

When D'Virgilio 's addition to MR. BIG was first announced in March, Sheehan said in a statement: "We found a wonderful drummer in Nick , and he's got a great voice too. Nick has a vocal range similar to Pat 's, and he'll be able to do the parts Pat did with a similar finesse.

Gilbert concurred, saying: " Nick gets close to the spirit of Pat Torpey . Billy , Eric [ Martin , vocals] and I have been really happy with the music we've already shared back and forth. I'm impressed with Nick 's level of musical adaptability and breadth of skill. He and I have done some recording together, and I was blown away with his groove, and how he just played what fit the song. If the song requires him to be more progressive and stand out, he will stand out. But if the song requires him to groove, he will groove. That's actually a rare thing, and it really fits in with what we do in MR. BIG ."

Martin added: "I love the fact that Nick was a fan of Pat Torpey and wants to keep our BIG sound intact. When I first saw his audition demo video of the 'Lean Into It' song 'Lucky This Time' , Nick was playing drums with those signature Pat snare hits and singing harmonies spot on to what Pat used to do. It gave me goosebumps!! I am so thrilled to have this man who will be filling some mighty BIG shoes join us on our last tour."

MR. BIG 's final tour sees the band performing the entirety of its breakthrough platinum-selling 1991 album "Lean Into It" from start to finish as a featured highlight of the live setlist.

"We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it," Sheehan said. Gilbert added: "We're in the process of making sure we come up with a suitably big entertainment extravaganza to go along with our music. And since our music has resonated so wonderfully in places all over the world, we're going to play in as many of those places as we can." Martin stated: "If we were in the movie business, we'd just put it all up in lights and say, 'Welcome to 'The BIG Finish' !' Seriously, I'm glad we're getting a chance to do it all onstage together as MR. BIG again and raise a flag to everything we've done as a band over the years."

Mr. Big reveal new touring drummer and plot farewell UK tour for 2024

The Big Finish is coming

After singer Eric Martin teased their comeback earlier this year, Mr. Big have officially announced details of an expansive farewell world tour called The Big Finish.

Five years on from the untimely death of their drummer and co-founder Pat Torpey from Parkinson’s disease, the three remaining members of Mr. Big - Eric Martin (vocals), Paul Gilbert (guitar/vocals) and Billy Sheehan (bass/vocals) – will say goodbye for good over the next two years.

Mr. Big’s The Big Finish tour will open in Japan this July before visiting South Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines and Indonesia. Following the Asian trek, Mr. Big will play dates in South America, Europe, the UK and the US in 2024.

The swansong tour will see Mr. Big perform their breakthrough 1991 album ‘Lean Into It’ in its entirety alongside other tracks from their distinguished career.

Paul Gilbert says of The Big Finish: "We're in the process of making sure we come up with a suitably big entertainment extravaganza to go along with our music. And since our music has resonated so wonderfully in places all over the world, we're going to play in as many of those places as we can."

Eric Martin adds: "If we were in the movie business, we'd just put it all up in lights and say, 'Welcome to 'The BIG Finish'!' Seriously, I'm glad we're getting a chance to do it all onstage together as Mr. Big again and raise a flag to everything we've done as a band over the years."

Joining them on the drum kit on the multi-year trek will be friend of the band Nick D'Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train).

"We found a wonderful drummer in Nick, and he's got a great voice too," says Billy Sheehan. "Nick has a vocal range similar to Pat's, and he'll be able to do the parts Pat did with a similar finesse. It's a big relief because Mr. Big has always been heavy on the harmonies. When the band began, we really relied on each other.

“We knew each guy would do exactly what he needed to do vocally and to do it righteously, on key, and in time. It's difficult to find a drummer who sings in that range, but Nick has the voice we really need onstage."

Agreeing, Paul Gilbert adds: "Nick gets close to the spirit of Pat Torpey. Billy, Eric, and I have been really happy with the music we've already shared back and forth. I'm impressed with Nick's level of musical adaptability and breadth of skill

“He and I have done some recording together, and I was blown away with his groove, and how he just played what fit the song. If the song requires him to be more progressive and stand out, he will stand out. But if the song requires him to groove, he will groove. That's actually a rare thing, and it really fits in with what we do in Mr. Big."

"I love the fact that Nick was a fan of Pat Torpey and wants to keep our BIG sound intact," says Eric Martin. "When I first saw his audition demo video of the 'Lean Into It' song 'Lucky This Time', Nick was playing drums with those signature Pat snare hits and singing harmonies spot on to what Pat used to do. It gave me goosebumps!! I am so thrilled to have this man who will be filling some mighty BIG shoes join us on our last tour."

Rock bands named after songs by other bands, including Mr. Big:

Judas priest.

British heavy metal legends Judas Priest took inspiration for their brilliant name from the Bob Dylan song 'The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest' from his 1967 album 'John Wesley Harding.' The moniker was the idea of early Judas Priest bassist Brian 'Bruno' Stapenhill who exited the band in 1970 before they had laid down any recordings.

Deep Purple

Initially called Roundabout, the rock legends initially toyed with band names including Orpheus, Concrete God and Sugarlump but eventually settled on Deep Purple; taken from the 1933 Peter DeRose piano composition. The song was a huge favourite of Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother and she would often perform it on piano throughout Ritchie's childhood.

In 1988, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan, Paul Gilbert and the late-great Pat Torpey named their new band after the Free song 'Mr. Big', which appeared on their breakthrough 1970 album 'Fire and Water'. Mr. Big later covered 'Mr. Big' on their third studio album 'Bump Ahead' in 1993.

After being dismissed from Hawkwind in 1975 following an arrest for drug possession in Canada, Lemmy started his own self-professed "fast and vicious" band and took the name Motörhead from the final song he had penned for Hawkwind just a few months earlier, 'Motorhead'. Two years later, Motörhead re-recorded 'Motorhead' as the opening track on their eponymous debut album.

Originally called Paris upon their formation in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania in 1983, singer Bret Michaels, guitarist Matt Smith, bassist Bobby Dall and drummer Rikki Rockett wisely ditched their tame sounding band name in favour of 'Poison'; a nod to the 1981 track 'Poison' by glam metallers 'Sinner'.

The Scottish hard rock veterans were called the Shadettes upon their formation in the late 1960s but were unhappy with what they perceived to be a 'lightweight' name. They decided to hit a boozer to discuss a new name when 'The Weight' by The Band started playing through the bar's soundsystem. Upon hearing the opening line "I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead" , bassist Pete Agnew suggested 'Nazareth' and the band agreed. The rest, they say, is history.

Danish rockers Volbeat took their name from the 1997 studio album 'Vol.Beat' by singer Michael Poulsen's previous band, the death metal act Dominus.

The Rolling Stones

Founder and original band leader Brian Jones gave The Rolling Stones their moniker after the 1950 Muddy Waters track 'Rollin' Stone'. The fledgling group played their first show as The Rolling Stones on 12th July 1962, at the famous Marquee Club in London.

The idea of former guitarist, singer and co-founding band member Max Cavalera, the Brazilian metallers called themselves Sepultura, which is the Portuguese word for "grave". Max took inspiration from one of his favourite songs, Motörhead's 'Dancing On Your Grave.'

Founded in Oxford in mid-1980s, Radiohead were originally called On A Friday in reference to their music rehearsal day at Abingdon School. When they signed a six-album deal with EMI in 1991, the imprint implored them to change their name and they ultimately took their band name from the song 'Radio Head' from Talking Heads' 1986 album 'True Stories'.

Washington DC punks Bad Brains named themselves after the Ramones track 'Bad Brain', which appears on their 1978 album 'Road To Ruin'.

Stefani Germanotta's stage name is derived from the Queen classic 'Radio Ga Ga'. Producer Rob Fusari claims to have been the person who coined 'Lady Gaga' in the mid-noughties when they worked together.

At The Drive-In

Influential post-hardcore noisemakers At The Drive-In got their moniker from a line in Poison's 1987 single 'Talk Dirty To Me' – "Cause baby we'll be / At the drive-in / In the old man's ford / Behind the bushes / Till I'm screamin' for more." The name was guitartist Jim Ward's suggestion shortly after the band former in 1993.

Formed in South Africa in 1999 as Saron Gas, the band ditched the name as their US label Wind-up Records noted its similarity to the toxic synthetic organophosphorus compound, sarin gas. Ultimately they settled on Seether after the 1994 Veruca Salt single 'Seether'.

The Sisters of Mercy

When they formed 40 years ago in Leeds, the gothic rockers took their name from the Leonard Cohen track 'Sisters of Mercy' from his seminal 1967 album 'Songs of Leonard Cohen.' The Sisters of Mercy took inspiration from Robert Altman's 1971 movie McCabe & Mrs Miller thats' soundtracked by three Leonard Cohen songs.

Stiff Little Fingers

Previously called Highway Star and The Fast, the Belfast punks eventually decided to call themselves Stiff Little Fingers after the 1977 Vibrators song of the same name.

Wisely abandoning the prospective band name Virgin Killer (a nod to the Scorpions), New Jersey thrash metallers Overkill ultimately honoured their other musical heroes Motörhead by naming themselves after the trio's 1979 album 'Overkill' and the single of the same name.

Panic! at the Disco

Although many people erroneously think that Panic! at the Disco are named after The Smiths' song 'Panic' and its chorus of "burn down the disco", former band leader Brendon Urie has said in multiple interviews that they take their name from a track also called 'Panic' by Californian emo band Name Taken. The song's lyrics read: "Panic at the disco/Sat back and took it so slow/Are you nervous?/Are you shaking?".

Billy Sheehan coming home to Buffalo with Mr. Big

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — To just say Billy Sheehan made it big would not be enough.

From humble Buffalo roots cutting his teeth with local legends Talas, to touring with David Lee Roth, to becoming a worldwide star in his own right, the Western New York native’s impact and influence on music match his top-tier virtuosity as a bassist.

With a roster of colleagues that would make any musician jealous, Sheehan is getting ready to bring one of his most successful bands, Mr. Big, back to Buffalo next month.

In fact, Buffalo will be Mr. Big’s last stop in the U.S. before they head overseas for the rest of The BIG Finish Tour.

And then, that’ll be it. Sheehan says he’d rather go out on a high note than go on too long.

“Rather than limping over the finish line, we’d like to run across it,” Sheehan said.

Mr. Big came to fruition in the late 80s, scoring their biggest hit, “To Be With You,” on their sophomore album “Lean Into It” — a record they’ll be playing from front to back when they take the stage at Buffalo’s Electric City on June 6.

More than three decades later, Mr. Big is touring with three of its four original members after drummer Pat Torpey’s death in 2018.

Best of Jacquie Walker: Remembering her 40 incredible years at News 4

“Mr. Big was, kind of, my band,” Sheehan said. “When I put it together though, I wanted it to be equal partners. I was lucky to find three guys that were just really great.”

But before Mr. Big, Sheehan’s name was well-established here in his hometown. Playing as part of Talas, Sheehan built up the musical muscles that eventually got him a call from David Lee Roth as the Van Halen frontman left the band to pursue a solo career.

Joking that he never got to watch “Saturday Night Live”, Sheehan says Talas played around Western New York every week, traversing out of the area at times, too. Barrel Head in West Seneca even had the band secured every seven days for Talas Tuesdays.

Talas’ schedule saw them do 21 shows in a row once, and at least one instance of three shows in a single day. And with this kind of schedule, Sheehan says the band played in every type of condition — something he says served him well as he got more experience under his belt.

“That’s why Buffalo’s such a great town,” Sheehan said. “It was an amazing live music city. We had bands every night of the week. The weekends were just jammed. You could see 10 bands play at any given time back in the day.”

Sheehan stood out. Bass solos might not be the first thing a concertgoer expects at a rock show, but for Sheehan, they helped craft his sound. He kept his solos interesting and tried new ideas, knowing he would have to in order to keep the audience’s attention. Extended solos also gave his bandmates a chance to grab a beer and chat with folks at the gig.

There really wasn’t anywhere in Western New York that Sheehan said he wanted to play but didn’t. His resume includes Kleinhans, Shea’s and the now-demolished Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.

4 takeaways: Bills practice harmony in opening OTAs

His days in Talas earned him a fan and future bandmate in the form of guitar virtuoso Paul Gilbert, too. But Mr. Big was yet to be born; Sheehan’s gig with David Lee Roth came first in the summer of 1985.

“It was like getting a Ph.D in show business,” Sheehan said of working with Roth, a man known for his flamboyance in front of the mic. The bassist called it an “incredible experience.”

After that, now bearing an even stronger set of skills, Sheehan formed Mr. Big, which released their first album in 1989, with “Lean Into It” following two years later.

“We ended up doing a whole tour and then had our hit at the end of that tour. So, we had to go out and tour again,” Sheehan laughed.

The decades that followed saw the bassist team up with other standout musicians like Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, forming the groups Sons of Apollo and The Winery Dogs.

Sheehan handles it all well, noting that he’s “pretty much all business when it comes down to doing a show,” while still having fun and enjoying the time with his bandmates.

Hamburg, West Seneca teachers to be laid off after school budgets pass

At age 71, he continues to love what he does, embracing live music’s sense of unity among fans and the connection he builds with the audience during shows.

“There’s something about live people in a hot, sweaty room playing music and everybody singing along that’s pretty hard to duplicate with technology, I believe,” he said.

When Sheehan comes home with Mr. Big on June 6, he says he plans to “do the best possible show that I have in me for my friends in Buffalo.”

“The urgency to play a great show live still lives on within the bands in Buffalo today, and I’m very, very happy to see that,” he said.

Sheehan will be back in Buffalo with another group of local legends for a Christmas show this December, but to see him first with Mr. Big at Electric City, tickets can be purchased here .

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!
