Can’t Get Tickets to Dry Cleaning This Fall? U.K Band Will Return to the States in 2022

Dry Cleaning will continue touring in support of their debut New Long Leg next year, with dates slated for spring 2022.

Following their North American fall tour — where they’re scheduled to perform sold-out shows in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn — the band will return to the States on May 15 in Somerville, Massachusetts. They’ll hit New York’s Webster Hall, Hotel Vegas in Austin, Texas, and other venues before heading to Mexico City with Interpol. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon E.T. Find tickets here .

Dry Cleaning Announce Tour Dates and Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks / Sweet Princess Reissue

Dry Cleaning are re-releasing their first two EPs—2018’s Sweet Princess and 2019’s Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks —together as one vinyl record. It’s out March 8 via 4AD . The band has also announced a stretch of 2024 tour dates. Find Dry Cleaning’s schedule below; scroll down for a new visualizer for Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks ’ “Sit Down Meal.”

Dry Cleaning recorded Sweet Princess in 2018 with producer Kristian Craig Robinson at Total Refreshment Centre in one day. They played their first-ever live gig at Dalston’s Shacklewell Arms two months later. Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks , named in tribute to the band’s rehearsal space, arrived in the following months. The British group issued its debut full-length New Long Leg in 2021, followed by 2022’s Stumpwork .

Whether you put on Nike Flyknit sneakers for running, soccer, basketball or everyday wear, they’re bound to encounter scuffs. Regularly cleaning your knit or mesh shoes can help keep them in shape — and looking fresh.

Nike does not recommend washing shoes in the washing machine. The most effective way to clean mesh or Nike Flyknit shoes is by hand washing.

Follow these simple steps to refresh your kicks.

How to Hand Wash Nike Flyknit and Other Mesh Shoes

1. prepare the solution.

Mix a small amount of laundry detergent or mild soap in a bowl with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water, as it could affect the dye of the shoes. It’s also best not to use any harsh chemicals or bleach.

2. Brush Off Any Dirt

Brush off any dirt from the upper. Then, tap the shoes together to dislodge any clumps of dirt from the sole. Consider doing this outside or over the sink.

3. Remove the Shoelaces

Remove the shoelaces — these can be washed by hand or in a washing machine. To hand wash the laces, massage the soap mixture into the laces, then rinse them with cold water. To machine wash the laces, place them in a mesh bag and run through a gentle cycle in the washing machine. Allow them to air dry, as the dryer could damage the aglets, the ends of the laces.

4. Stuff with Newspaper

Stuff the shoes with crumpled newspapers, washcloths or a shoe tree to help maintain their shape.

5. Brush Shoes with Solution

Dip a shoe brush or spare, clean toothbrush in the soapy liquid, then gently brush the shoes in the direction of the knit pattern. Note that the direction can change on different parts of the shoe, depending on the density and pattern of the knit. Don’t scrub too harshly and be mindful not to snag the yarn.

6. Scrub the Remaining Part of Shoe

Scrub both the sides and bottom of the soles with the brush.

7. Grab a Towel

Wipe off the soap with a clean cloth. Repeat steps 5 and 6 as necessary. If the shoes are especially dirty, you may want to repeat a few times.

8. Let Them Air Dry

Pat the shoes dry with a cloth, then allow them to air dry. The heat from the dryer can cause damage to shoes, so avoid putting them in the dryer. Words by Hannah Singleton

Frequently Asked Questions

Due to the delicate nature of the fabric, Nike does not recommend washing Nike Flyknit shoes (or any others) in a washing machine. Always hand wash Nike Flyknit and other mesh shoes.

The heat from the dryer can damage knit fabric, so let your Nike Flyknit or mesh shoes air dry.

If you want to enhance the shine of your white Nike mesh shoes, mix together two parts baking soda with one part water. Apply this paste to the knit upper using a soft brush and then gently brush in the direction of the mesh or knit pattern.

You can also apply this mixture to the rubber sole and scrub away any dirt or stains. Let the baking soda mixture sit for 30 minutes, then use a damp washcloth to wipe off the fabric.

Maybe it’s also time to rethink drinking ?

Moderate drinking was once thought to have benefits for the heart, but better research methods have thrown cold water on that.

“Drinking less is a great way to be healthier,” said Dr. Timothy Naimi, who directs the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.

ARE DRINKING GUIDELINES CHANGING?

Guidelines vary a lot from country to country but the overall trend is toward drinking less.

The United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Holland and Australia recently reviewed new evidence and lowered their alcohol consumption recommendations. Ireland will require cancer warning labels on alcohol starting in 2026.

“The scientific consensus has shifted due to the overwhelming evidence linking alcohol to over 200 health conditions, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases and injuries,” said Carina Ferreira-Borges, regional adviser for alcohol at the World Health Organization regional office for Europe.

From Dry January to Sober October to bartenders getting creative with non-alcoholic cocktails , there’s a cultural vibe that supports cutting back.

“People my age are way more accepting of it,” said Tessa Weber, 28, of Austin, Texas. She stopped drinking for Dry January this year because she’d noticed alcohol was increasing her anxiety. She liked the results — better sleep, more energy — and has stuck with it.

“It’s good to reevaluate your relationship with alcohol,” Weber said.

WAIT, MODERATE DRINKING DOESN’T HAVE HEALTH BENEFITS?

That idea came from imperfect studies comparing groups of people by how much they drink. Usually, consumption was measured at one point in time. And none of the studies randomly assigned people to drink or not drink, so they couldn’t prove cause and effect.

People who report drinking moderately tend to have higher levels of education, higher incomes and better access to health care, Naimi said.

“It turns out that when you adjust for those things, the benefits tend to disappear,” he said.

Another problem: Most studies didn’t include younger people. Almost half of the people who die from alcohol-related causes die before the age of 50.

“If you’re studying people who survived into middle age, didn’t quit drinking because of a problem and didn’t become a heavy drinker, that’s a very select group,” Naimi said. “It creates an appearance of a benefit for moderate drinkers that is actually a statistical illusion.”

Other studies challenge the idea that alcohol has benefits. These studies compare people with a gene variant that makes it unpleasant to drink to people without the gene variant. People with the variant tend to drink very little or not at all. One of these studies found people with the gene variant have a lower risk of heart disease — another blow to the idea that alcohol protects people from heart problems.

HOW MANY DRINKS CAN I HAVE PER DAY?

That depends.

Drinking raises the risk of several types of cancer , including colon, liver, breast and mouth and throat. Alcohol breaks down in the body into a substance called acetaldehyde, which can damage your cells and stop them from repairing themselves. That creates the conditions for cancer to grow.

Thousands of U.S. deaths per year could be prevented if people followed the government’s dietary guidelines, which advise men to limit themselves to two drinks or fewer per day and women to one drink or fewer per day, Naimi said.

One drink is the equivalent of about one 12-ounce can of beer, a 5-ounce glass of wine or a shot of liquor.

Naimi served on an advisory committee that wanted to lower the recommendation for men to one drink per day . That advice was considered and rejected when the federal recommendations came out in 2020.

“The simple message that’s best supported by the evidence is that, if you drink, less is better when it comes to health,” Naimi said.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

When your skin is “ultra dry,” Chiu says that using a moisture mask a few times a week “can help dry, flaky, sensitive or even more irritated skin calm down.” During sleep, our skin loses more moisture because our body temperature slowly increases throughout the night, says Chiu. This mask contains several moisturizing ingredients, including the humectant hyaluronic acid. It also has an “occlusive effect that still manages to feel light and soothing,” according to Chiu. Other ingredients included are black oat, lecithin and red seaweed.

What is a moisturizer and how does it work.

Moisturizers bring moisture “into the skin, not just to its surfaces,” says Chiu. Typically, they come in the form of lotions or creams, but can be gels, or ointments too. Lotions tend to be lighter and less greasy, making them better for normal to lightly dry skin, says Chiu, while creams provide “a heavier barrier to keep your skin moisturized,” and are ideal for dry or sensitive skin. Gels, like petroleum jelly, or ointments, keep skin hydrated by sealing moisture in.

How to shop for a moisturizer for dry skin

Most moisturizers formulated for dry skin have a heavier, thicker texture to provide a heavy barrier on the skin. “Greasy creams and ointments work best for dry skin,” says both Goldman and Dachnowicz.

You should also pay close attention to the ingredients in each product you’re considering. As previously stated, typically, these ingredients fall into one of three categories, according to our experts:

• Humectants draw water to the skin’s surface and help the skin retain moisture. It works by “[breaking] down dead skin cells, further improving moisture penetration,” according to Chiu. Hyaluronic acid is arguably the most common — and important — humectant: It “works by absorbing moisture like a sponge from the air and draws it into the skin,” says Goldman and Dachnowicz. Other common humectants found in moisturizers include urea, glycerol, sorbitol, glycerin, aloe vera gel and lactic acid.
• Emollients help soften the skin and lock in moisture, and “are beneficial to aging or dry skin when natural lipids have been depleted,” says Chiu. (Natural lipids are fatty acids that trap in moisture and soothe and moisturize the skin, experts previously told us in our guide to SPF lip balms .) Common emollients include shea butter, isopropyl palmitate and colloidal oatmeal.
• Occlusives create a physical barrier over the epidermis that prevents water loss and shields the skin from potential irritants. (The popular “slugging” trend relies on occlusive products.) According to Chiu, they are a good option for those with dry skin “since they aid in moisture retention and skin barrier restoration.” However, if you have acne-prone skin, Goldman and Dachnowicz warn that occlusive ointments might clog your pores. Common occlusives include waxes like beeswax and silicone and oils like olive oil, lanolin, mineral oil and dimethicone.

Humectants, emollients and occlusives all work together to hydrate the skin and lock moisture in.

Since moisturizers come in various textures and consistencies, experts also recommend choosing your formulations (cream, gel-cream, balm etc.) according to your skin’s type and sensitivity. 

• According to Young, ointments are the thickest and most moisturizing formula, and usually have the least amount of irritating ingredients. “The downside to ointments is that they are greasy,” she says. “Most people wouldn’t want to walk around with ointment all over their bodies.” 
• “A balm would be slightly less thick than an ointment but would still feel noticeable on the skin,” says Young. She says that creams would be next on the list — she often recommends them to patients with dry skin that won’t tolerate ointments.
• Young says that lotions would be next — “they’re not as thick but not quite as moisturizing,” she says. She notes that some people might need a cream in the drier wintertime, but are able to switch to a lighter lotion during the summer.
• On gels , Young says that they “tend to be cooling but less moisturizing”. “The new category of gel-creams is an interesting one,” she says. “These products try to strike a balance between moisturizing well but feeling more elegant on the skin with less of a feeling of leaving a greasy film”. She also adds that, although gel-creams might not be strong enough for those with very dry skin, they are an “incredible innovation in the moisturizing world”.

Frequently asked questions

As you’re shopping for facial moisturizers to heal and revitalize your dry skin, you might notice that most of them are labeled as fragrance-free and alcohol-free. That’s because fragrances and denatured alcohols can dry out the skin, which is counterproductive when you’re trying to combat dryness.

According to our skin care experts, here are some of the ingredients you should avoid while shopping for a face moisturizer for dry skin.

• Denatured alcohols: On skin care labels, denatured alcohol will appear as ethyl alcohol or SD alcohol. These alcohols “will dry out skin even more and draw moisture out of the skin, which can affect the skin barrier function and cause sensitivity and redness,” according to Chiu. Not all alcohols are denatured alcohols, so don’t worry if you see “alcohol” on the label of a moisturizer advertised for dry skin.
• Fragrances: Chiu, Goldman and Dachnowicz all say they prefer unscented facial moisturizers, since fragrances can irritate the skin.
• Exfoliants: The experts we spoke to also note that exfoliants can irritate dry skin and potentially even make it worse. Common exfoliating ingredients to avoid include salicylic acid and glycolic acid.

According to Young, both terms can often be used interchangeably — “hydrating the skin would be similar to moisturizing the skin,” she says.

A few indicators of dry skin include:

• Consistent flaking or scaliness (it can be itchy but doesn't have to be).
• A dull appearance, and accentuated fine lines and wrinkles when the skin is dry.
• Sensitivity to products with certain ingredients like fragrance, botanicals or preservatives.

Dr. Young recommends applying moisturizer first — “if after the shower, it should be applied within a few minutes of stepping out of the shower when the skin has the most water in it … the moisturizer seals in the water.” She adds that other products like sunscreen and makeup would be applied on top of the moisturizer, and notes that those with dry skin should reapply moisturizer throughout the day. “Once a day isn't enough for those with dry skin!”
