Where to see Santa in York this Christmas [2023]

[I will continue to update this post with suggestions of where to visit Father Christmas in York in 2023 as information & reviews become available!]

I know it might feel a little early to be thinking about booking in a Santa visit but, with the best experiences booking up early, it pays to be prepared especially as I think there will be limited availability this year due to rollover bookings and people keen to make up for missed opportunities in recent years!

Looking ahead to Christmas still feels a little strange – we’ve all had our fingers burned when it comes to making plans and looking forward to things but I think, rather tentatively, we are all starting to look ahead to the festive season and, with fingers crossed, we just want to know there is something nice coming at the end of this rather challenging year!

As I child, I visited Father Christmas at the same garden centre in West Yorkshire year in, year out. I think there’s something rather special about picking somewhere and making a tradition of it – it helps to retain the magic and as such we only ever take our children to see Father Christmas at Stockeld Park.

If you haven’t decided where to take the kids to see Father Christmas yet this year, now is the time to make plans. There may be reduced capacity at festive events this Christmas and almost certainly increased demand and prices!

The best places to visit Father Christmas in York 2019

If you’re looking for places to visit Santa in the York area this Christmas, why not take a look at some of the suggestions below:

Contents - Click here to jump to the section you need

The Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park – Saturday 18th November to Sunday 24th December 2023 | SOLD OUT

This is our personal favourite and as such I’m putting it first on the list – it’s not strictly in York but it’s definitely one of the best places to visit Father Christmas in Yorkshire!

Fans of a traditional Santa’s Grotto are in for a treat at Stockeld Park where a cosy, rustic wooden cabin, decked with twinkling lights, awaits Santa’s arrival from Lapland.

Stockeld Park’s famous adventure season includes The Snowflake Maze and Winter Illuminations in the award-winning Enchanted Forest.

Tickets must be booked online this year at www.stockeldpark.co.uk . Pricing at Stockeld Park has become increasingly complicated and expensive in recent years and has actually changed again since our visit last Christmas – when we first started going you could pay about £10 for each child to see Father Christmas and everything else was an add on – now everyone attending the park needs a ticket, which if you want to see Father Christmas, costs at least £20 per person but includes the Winter Illuminations etc. I recommend you check out their ticket guide to see exactly what each package offers before booking.

City Cruises York Santa Experience

There is a reason why families return year after year to join city cruises york santa experience, it really is the most magical event on the river ouse.

Santa clearly works hard all year around and especially in December when he somehow manages to find the time to visit all of the especially well behaved boys and girls before Christmas!

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2021?

Santa and his team have made a few changes this year, to make sure that City Cruises York can offer you a secure and comfortable visit, without missing out on any of the fun.

  • You will join Santa and friends aboard the Captain James Cook, their largest boat, meaning that there will be more space for groups to socially distance.
  • Each group will be seated at their own table for up to 6 guests.
  • All touch points will be cleaned regularly, staff will wear appropriate PPE, and hand sanitiser will be available around the vessel.
  • Social distancing will be in effect during queuing, boarding and disembarking.
  • Each child will receive an individual colouring and activity pack.
  • Each family group will have an opportunity to spend time with Santa in his grotto area and photo opportunity (no charge for photos – please bring your own camera).
  • There will also be a competition held aboard each cruise with fantastic tourist attraction entry tickets to be won!

Your Santa experience begins as you are welcomed into the Grotto, cleverly hidden away underneath the beautiful Lendal Bridge. Upon entering, the Santa Experience Captain will check all of the children off the special list that we receive from Lapland. If you have any pushchairs, then you are welcome to leave these in the safety of our Reindeer Pen (they will all be away on business with Santa at this time so there will be plenty of room).

You will then be warmly greeted by Santa’s good friend Mary Christmas or Ernie the Elf, who will gladly show you to your reserved seating.

And we can’t tell you too much more about what happens next, that would spoil the magic. But we can guarantee that Santa Claus himself will find his way aboard and the whole family will have the most wonderful time on board our Santa Experience in 2021.

Each child will be hand delivered a personalised present from Santa whilst everybody on board will enjoy refreshments, fun and surprises, making this a Christmas treat to remember.

  • For adults a glass of red or white house wine or a refillable cup of tea or coffee, an apple or mince pie
  • For kids a soft drink (Fruit Shoot or Capri Sun), a novelty biscuit
  • Present for each child, colouring in sheets and a letter template to write a letter to Santa
  • 1 hour cruise*

(Infant tickets include a gift, but do not include a seat or refreshments).

*Please note that the Santa Experience is held on one of City Cruises York’s largest boats, and if the river is flowing above it’s normal levels there is a chance that the boat will not actually be able to sail. In this event, the Santa Experience will still take place (he can still find his way aboard!) and everybody will still no doubt have a fantastic and memorable time.

Please note that if the cruise does not sail, you will receive a complimentary voucher for a daytime sightseeing cruise!

The market consists of wooden alpine chalet market stalls which are mostly centred on pedestrianised Parliament Street. Plus, there are smaller pop-up markets on Coppergate and Lendal a few minutes walk away.

York Christmas Market is a free York attraction. Buskers, brass bands and carol singers create a festive atmosphere and help to entertain shoppers day and night.

The Christmas markets in York is a great location to pick up locally sourced, handmade gifts as well as locally produced food and drink.

You can try some delicious Yorkshire chocolate, locally grown Yorkshire wine or yummy Yorkshire gin. There stalls ranging from woollen clothes, glass ornaments, photography, wooden ornaments, light shades and sustainable kids toys including the popular tin steam boat. You can also find York and Yorkshire themed gifts as souvenirs of your trip.

Useful information

York Christmas market 2023 is open from Thursday 16th November to Friday 22rd December.

Stalls open around 10 am and close at 6 pm on weekdays or at 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

There are no toilets in the market but there are fee paying public toilets in the adjacent Shambles market. Free public toilets in York can be found on the third floor of Marks and Spencer’s on Parliament Street or on the first floor of Browns department store on St. Sampson’s Square at the top end of the market.

There are food and drink stalls in the market and lots of cafes and pubs in the surrounding area. Alternatively, pop into the Shambles Market adjacent to the Christmas market for street food and under cover seating.

Getting to York Christmas Market 2023

The main market is on Parliament Street which  is 1.4 kilometres or a 15-minute walk from York rail station. However, you can also catch the No.9 bus from outside York rail station which will drop you on Stonebow, a 2 minute walk from Parliament Street.

If you are driving to the market, fee paying parking is available nearby at Castle Car Park (adjacent to Clifford’s Tower) or St. Georges Field car park.

Alternatively, park at Monks Cross Park and Ride and catch the N0.9 Park and Ride bus which stops near the bottom of Parliament Street on Stonebow. Rawcliffe Park and Ride No. 2 bus will drop you off outside Museum Gardens from where it is a 5 minute walk to York Christmas Market.

Yorkie local tip- York Christmas Markets are very popular and Parliament Street gets very busy on the weekends running up to Christmas. Visit the market mid week if you can, or if you are visiting on the weekend, visit early or late to try avoid the mid-day crowds.

Shopping in York at Christmas

In addition to the Xmas markets York also offers other fantastic locations for Christmas shopping in York.

Visit a Christmas shop in York

The largest year round Christmas shop York has is the gorgeous Käthe Wohlfahrt on Stonegate. It is housed in the 15th century Mulberry Hall, one of the oldest buildings in York, and is the only Wohlfahrt outlet in Britain.

The two storey shop sells traditional Christmas decorations made in the family’s workshop in Germany. You will find German and Scandinavian style wooden and glass ornaments as well as York and U.K themed gifts.

It is a must visit if you are in York at Christmas as it is guaranteed to get you into the festive spirit. If you get lost looking for it, just as a local where the German Christmas shop York is.

Another option is ‘The Nutcracker’ Christmas shop on The Shambles.

This cute shop is a good place to pick up York and U.K themed decorations. It also has a wide selection of hobbies decorations.

The Shambles Market

Us Yorkies are proud our city centre Shambles Market. It sells everything from fish to fruit, jewellery, leather goods, hats, glass and wood work. Shopping here means shopping local and supporting local artisans.

Nestled in between the Christmas market on Parliament Street and the historic Shambles, The Shambles Market is a convivial place to shop, eat and drink. There are pop up street food stalls and a central covered area for communal dining.

Don’t miss the popular flower stall at the entrance to the market which is justifiably one of the most photographed locations in York.

A Yorkie local tip – For a great view of the Shambles Market and of York Minster, climb the stairs to the third floor of The Market Cat pub in The Shambles. The views from its large windows are some of the best in York.

Useful information

Käthe Wohlfahrt – 19, Stonegate, YO1 8ZW. Open everyday from 10 am to 6 pm (10.30am to 5.30 pm on Sundays).

The Nutcracker – 32 Shambles, YO1 7LX . Open every day from 10 am to 5 pm (and until 5.30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays).

The Shambles Market – 5 Silver Street, YO1 8RY. Open everyday from 9 am to 5 pm.

York City Centre shopping

If you are spending Christmas in York, I think the city’s pedestrianised streets make shopping easy and stress free.

In addition to the well known high street brands found on Coney Street and Parliament Street, I recommend the antiques and jewellers shops along Stonegate, the independent stores along Minster Gate and Petergate, or the quirky vintage stores along Fossgate.

Things to do in York at Christmas 2023

See york christmas lights .

2023 will see the best Christmas lights York has ever had. In fact, an estimated 160,000 lights will adorn our city brightening up the Yorkshire winter.

Check out the decorated and illuminated charity Christmas trees in Coppergate, at York Christmas market and in St Helen’s Square next to Betty’s Tea Rooms.

Furthermore, Coney Street, Parliament Street, The Shambles and Stonegate (which are all pedestrianised) have festive light displays, illuminated street garlands and lit Christmas trees.

Don’t the city’s festive window displays. My favourites are the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas shop on Stonegate and Betty’s Tea Rooms.

Monk Bar (at the entrance to Micklegate) is draped in silvery lights whilst the entrance to St Michael in the Belfrey next to York Minster is covered in a curtain of gold lights.

At the Eye of York in front of York Castle Museum is the magical Tree of Light which has an ever-changing light display.

Finally, in addition to all the Christmas lights in York,  visitors can also enjoy the usual illuminated York attractions.  Make sure you see York Minster and Clifford’s Tower which look amazing at night.

Don’t forget, if you are visiting York on a budget, wandering around looking at the Christmas lights and displays is totally free!

Attend a Christmas at York Minster event

I highly recommend attending a Christmas event at York Minster. It is a memorable and magical experience and most Yorkies I know try to visit the Minster at least once very Christmas.

Free events in York Minster at Christmas

For Christmas in York 2023, the Minster’s festive season starts with a candlelit advent service on 3rd December during which the Minsters’ famous and enormous advent wreath is hoisted above the altar.

On the 11th December there is another candlelit celebration for Sankta Lucia, the Swedish festival of light. Both of these services are free to attend.

One of the most popular free Christmas events in York is the ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ services take place on December 22nd and December 24th. Each service lasts around 1.5 hours and are free to attend. However, you must book tickets in advance on the York Minster website.

Additionally, in 2023 York Minster is also hosting a Christmas Tree Festival from 2nd December to 5th January. Over 60 trees decorated by local school and charities will be on display inside the Minster in the nave, the Chapter House and Lady Chapel.

Entrance to the festival is included in the general York Minster admission fee.

Note that sightseeing of the Minster is not allowed immediately before, during or after services.

Ticketed Christmas events in York Minster

This year, there are Minster Carol Concerts are on Thursday 7th December and Friday 8th December.

These concerts include traditional carols sung by the Minster choir, brass band music and readings by famous actors. Tickets must be bought online in advance of the concert.

2023 also sees Carols by Candlelight, a family friendly production of ‘The Nutcracker’ and a concert in the nave by Jethro Tull. Full details and tickets available on the York Minster booking website.

There is no parking allowed at York Minster. The nearest fee paying parking is at Monk Gate or Mary Gate car park.

Alternatively, catch the No 2 Park and Ride which drops you at Museum Gardens which is a 5 minute walk from York Minster.

There are toilets and baby changing facilities inside York Minster.

If it is open, the York Minster shop has some gorgeous Christmas gifts to purchase.

Local Tip – If you are attending a free event at York Minster, seating is not allocated on your ticket. Arrive early if you want to get a good seat with a view. I also advise wrapping up warm (and wearing extra socks) as York Minster can get cold in winter!

York historic houses

The historic houses in York put on special themed events each Christmas.

The National Trust owned Treasurer’s House is behind York Minster has a 2023 theme of ‘Gifts From Afar.’ This quirky house will be decorated with ornaments from the eclectic collection of Frank Green who was once the owner of Treasurers House.

The Georgian era Fairfax House on Coppergate is known for its elaborate Christmas displays. In 2023, the theme is inspired by the ‘Night before Christmas’ poem and visitors have to spot as many hidden mice as possible whilst touring the decorated house.

Useful Information

Tickets for these historic houses need to be booked online in advance of your visit.

The nearest car park to the Treasurer’s House is Marygate car park and the nearest park and ride is the No 2 from Rawcliffe. Fairfax House is just metres away from Clifford’s Tower car park or you could use the No 7 Park and Ride bus which stops near Clifford’s Tower.

Both houses have toilets and gift shops.

However, these old houses have steps and stairs so are not suitable for buggies or anyone with mobility issues. If you have access needs, I recommend contacting the house in advance to see how they can help.

Treasurer’s House ‘Gifts from Afar’ is open from 13th November to 17th December from Saturday to Wednesday. Open from 11 am to 4 pm with last admission at 3.15 pm.

Fairfax House town mice take over from 11th November to 7th January. Children under 16 are free with a paying adult.

A Yorkie local tip – Don’t miss the chance to indulge in a scone at the Treasurer’s House. They are the best in York and were recently voted the best scone out of all of the National Trust properties in the U.K! This Christmas, the house is also offering a Christmas pudding flavoured scone.

Make your own Christmas chocolate at York Chocolate Story

Did you know that York has a long history of chocolate making? The city was once home to Rowntree’s and Terry’s and there is still a Nestle factory producing chocolate today.

You can learn all about the history of chocolate – and York’s long chocolate history – at the excellent York Chocolate Story which offers family friendly tours daily.

If you are in York at Christmas, you can also join one of the museum’s popular chocolate masterclasses. This year, workshops include Chocolate Making With Santa, Truffle Rolling, and Family Workshops. Workshop and general admission tickets should be booked online in advance here.

Take a Christmas themed walking tour

In addition to the year round walking tours in York, at Christmas you can join a special festive themed walking tour.

This 90-minute walking tour visits key sites in the city and you will also learn about the history and traditions of Christmas in York.

Tours run nightly from November 19th (whatever the weather) so wrap up warm! Book online here in advance. Tickets cost £12 for adults and just £5 for children.

If you are looking for ideas of things to do in York, check out my essential guide to York here.

Find The Nutcrackers!

2023 sees the return of The Nutcracker Trail when 10 individually designed and decorated Nutcrackers are placed around the city.

Pick up a Nutcracker Trail map from the Visit York Information Centre on Parliament Street. Each Nutcracker has a name so finding a Nutcracker finds a name. Once you have the names of all 10 nutcrackers, drop off your leaflet at Visit York Information Centre of post it in Santa’s post box in Museum Gardens.

All entries will be entered into a draw to win a £250 York Gift Card. Plus, if you discover the link between all of the nutcracker names, you could win your own miniature nutcracker.

The Nutcracker Trail is free and runs from November 16th until January 4th.

Entertainment in York at Christmas

Watch a york theatre panto .

A Christmas pantomime is a British tradition. A York panto is fun, raucous and over the top but we love it and go to watch a pantomime in York at Christmas every year.

For my non British readers, pantos in York are a comedic singing and dancing show loosely based on a traditional fairy tale. Audience participation is encouraged at a York panto – and the louder the better!

Be prepared to boo, hiss, cheer and stand up to sing and dance. If you like old fashioned elaborate theatres with stalls, circles and boxes you will love the Grand Opera House.

This year, The Grand Opera House York panto is ‘Robinson Crusoe and The Pirates of the River Ouse’ from December 9th to January 6th.

It stars Berwick Kaler, who has been performing in pantomimes in York for over 40 years. Tickets can be bought online in advance or from the GOH box office on Cumberland Street, YO1 9SW.

The York Theatre Royal panto is ‘Jack and The Beanstalk’ which runs from 8th December to 7th January. Book your tickets here.

Pantomimes run every night with additional matinee performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

A York pantomime lasts around 2.5 hours with an interval in the middle of the show. Performances accompanied by sign language are available.

Tickets start from £13 though you can expect to pay up to £75+ for the best front row seats.

Neither theatre has car parking on site. The Grand Opera House is approximately 20 minutes on foot from York rail station and its nearest car park is Clifford’s Tower.

The nearest car park to York Theatre Royal is Marygate. Both theatres are close to Park and Ride stops.

My local tip – Book your tickets in advance as pantos tend to sell out quickly.

Watch a Christmas movie in a York cinema

There are two cinemas in York which show Christmas movies in the run up to Christmas and on Christmas Eve. This is a good option for weary shoppers or if York winter weather is poor.

Everyman York on Blossom Street has comfy sofas and armchairs plus you can get food and drink delivered to your seat.In the heart of York city centre.

The Picturehouse on Coney Street has multiple screens and a great cafe. Annual festive screenings include ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, and ‘The Polar Express’ and of course, that Christmas classic, ‘Die Hard.’

Or, for something a little different, on the 8th December, York Barbican are showing ’ The Muppets Christmas Carol’ accompanied by a live orchestra.

Sing your heart out at a carol concert

Finally, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a carol concert so Christmas sing a long is a ‘must do’ in you are in York at Christmas.

The York Community Carol Concert is favourite with us Yorkies. It takes place at York Barbican on December 17th and has been running for over 60 years.

It is a mix of solo musicians, big bands and local school choirs and is guaranteed to get you into the festive spirit.I highly recommend it especially if you are visiting York from overseas and want to enjoy Christmas in York like a local.

Don’t forget there are also the free carol concerts offered by York Minster.

Visiting York at Christmas with kids

Visit santa in his grotto .

Kids can meet Santa at several York city centre locations. Most visits require pre- booking but there is a cosy wooden chalet for drop in visits on Coppergate near Jorvik Viking Centre.

There are pre-bookable Santa meet and greets at York Castle Museum, York Chocolate Story and the medieval Barley Hall. Admission fees apply to these attractions in addition to Santa’s grotto.

Instead, why not visit Santa on a festive cruise whilst touring the River Ouse on City Cruise’s Santa Experiences. The experience includes a 1 hour cruise, a meet and greet with Santa plus a personalised present and goody bag for kids.

Children and adults receive a drink and biscuit or mince pie.The Santa Experience is so popular that many York families return year after year so pre-booking is essential.

Go ice skating at Yorkshire Winter Wonderland

The Yorkshire Winter Wonderland at MacArthur Glen shopping centre on the outskirts of York features an open-air ice rink which is the largest in the U.K.

This ice rink is made from real ice and is centred around an enormous Christmas tree. There is a warm, enclosed marquee with a cafe and viewing areas plus a separate marquee for skate hire.

There are parent and toddler sessions available daily which are a great option for young skaters as the skater numbers are limited. Very young skaters can use penguin shaped stabilizers.

At night, skating around the illuminated Christmas tree is fun and magical. We go every year with our kids – though we never seem to get better at ice skating?!

Yorkshire Winter Wonderland is a short 10 minute drive from York City centre (traffic dependent). There is lots of free parking available on site.

If you don’t have a car, catch the No. 7 bus from York city centre which stops outside the shopping centre. Up to 3 kids under 16 are free on Park and Ride buses in York with a paying adult.

You can read my guide to York’s Park and Ride scheme here.

York Minster Crib Service

Families with very young children can attend the Crib Service on December 23rd . Your children can dress up as nativity characters (including animals) and go onto the altar when their ‘part’ is mentioned in the Christmas stories. Kids and adults will love it!

Any and all costumes are welcomed at this service as we have seen Iron Man and Spiderman in the nativity tableau!

Due to the popularity of this event, you must pre book free tickets in advance on the York Minster website.

Queues form early for the free crib service so arrive early to get a seat. There are no food facilities in York Minster but there are ample toilet facilities including a changing table.

Where to eat and drink at Christmas in York

Thor’s tipi .

Thor’s Tipi is specially erected for the festive period. The enormous canvas tipi serves hot drinks such as hot chocolate and coffee or alcohol (including mulled wine and cocktails).

It attracts weary daytime shoppers as well as night time party goers. There are sheepskin lined benches centred around an open fire which creates a communal, convivial atmosphere.

Our kids love our annual trip to Thor’s Tipi for a mouth-watering hot chocolate.

For 2023, Thor’s Tipi has moved to a new home in Museum Gardens. This year it will include two giant tents, live music with local bands plus food by Yuzu Street Food and Ciao.

Thors Tipi York is in Museum Gardens, on Museum Street YO1 7FR.

It is open from November 15th to December 31st. Opening times are Monday to Wednesday 12 pm – 9 pm, Thursday to Saturday 12 pm – 10.30 pm. On Sundays the tipi is open from 12 pm – 8 pm.

Indulge in a festive afternoon tea in York

York is renowned for its fabulous afternoon teas and I think Christmas themed teas are even better.

My top festive afternoon teas in York include Betty’s Tea Room , a York institution that will take you back in time with china crockery, a classical pianist and uniformed waiting staff.

The food is delicious and although pricey at £39.95 per person, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

The Grand Hotel (York’s only five-star hotel) offers family friendly festive teas from the 16th November – 31st December. Each festive themed afternoon tea comes with a festive cocktail.

Prices start from £49.95 per adult and The Grand also offers children’s festive teas.

The Principal Hotel next to York rail station serves a chocolate inspired afternoon tea in their elegant Garden Room. Prices start from £29 per person.

Cosy up in an igloo

The Churchill Hotel near Bootham Bar is a 10 minute walk from York city centre.

It is a Grade II listed Georgian mansion with a pretty front garden which is transformed into a winter wonderland with open fires and illuminated igloos.

Visitors can pre-book an igloo for drinks or dinner over the festive period for a cosy and private way to dine. Pre-booking is essential here.

Christmas Dinner in York

Wherever you eat Christmas dinner in York you can expect it to be accompanied by a Yorkshire pudding. We like to do things differently here!

Several city centre pubs and hotels offer Christmas Day dinner in York. You can expect to pay between £60 and  £200 per person for a 3 or 4 course dinner.

Check out my comprehensive guide to Christmas dinner in York here which includes options for every budget.

Christmas Drinks in York

I always recommend a visit to ‘The House Of Trembling Madness’ on Stonegate at Christmas. I love its convivial atmosphere and communal seating.  You will get into the festive spirit and to make new friends.

For a great view of the City of York at Christmas, head to the rooftop Sora Bar at the Malmaison Hotel. They have heaters and blankets to help you brave the chilly York nights.

Alternatively, any of the traditional style York city centre pubs will offer a cosy retreat from winter weather. My top picks to visit at Christmas include Guy Fawkes Inn, Ye Olde Starre Inn and The Fat Badger.

York at Christmas – final thoughts

A trip to York at Christmas 2023 is guaranteed to offer lots of fun, festive activities for every age, interest and budget.

If you are staying in York for several days, read my guide to all the fabulous festive day trips from York you can take. Options include themed parks, historic estates or visiting other Christmas markets in Yorkshire.

York at Christmas 2023 will be bigger, better and more magical than ever. I think that a York Christmas will be a Christmas you remember.

York Christmas Market Dates: York Christmas Market will return from 16th November to 22nd December 2023 .

Location: Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, York

York’s historic city centre transforms into a winter wonderland, with the hugely popular St Nicholas Fair attracting visitors from far and wide. Running from the 26th of November until the 23rd of December, this bustling market is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the true magic of Christmas in York.

The York Christmas market gets busy, so I would advise against going at peak times. I once went on a Saturday, in mid-December, and it was shoulder-to-shoulder with people. I’d recommend going early in the week, first thing. I went one Tuesday morning in November and it was a delight!

York Christmas Market

Stroll along the charming alpine chalets lining Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, basking in the cosy glow of twinkling lights. Here, you’ll find unique handcrafted gifts, artisan food items, and seasonal treats, perfect for ticking off your Christmas shopping list. Don’t forget to warm up with a steaming cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate as you meander through the festive stalls. There’s also lots of local flavoured gin and alcohol, as well as festive beers which make great fits.

The traditional Swiss chalet was new to York Christmas Market in 2022 – The Winter Hütte. Offering a ‘Swiss with a Twist’ dining experience, this cosy retreat is the brainchild of Michelin-starred chef, Andrew Pern ( Star Inn the City ). Indulge in delicious food and delightful company in this charming addition to the market. It’s dog friendly, has a child-friendly menu and serves some local beers. It’s coming back in 2023 – but dates are to be confirmed!

As you can see, York Christmas Markets 2023 is due to be one of the best things to do in York at Christmas!

The Shambles, York’s famous medieval street, becomes even more enchanting during the Christmas season. Adorned with festive decorations and boasting vibrant window displays, this bustling thoroughfare is the perfect place to find those unique, hard-to-find gifts for your loved ones.

The Shambles is home to an array of independent shops, offering a treasure trove of artisan gifts and food items that are sure to delight even the pickiest of recipients. Popular shops are the Harry Potter-themed ones as well as The York Ghost Merchants. So take a leisurely stroll down the Shambles York at Christmas and tick off your Christmas shopping list while soaking in the festive atmosphere.

One of the simplest yet most enchanting Christmas activities in York is to simply wander the city’s streets, admiring the dazzling array of festive decorations. From the stunning lights that illuminate Betty’s Tearoom and The Ivy in St Helen’s Square to the spectacular storefronts of independent jewellers like Bradley’s on Low Petergate, the city comes alive with the glow of Christmas cheer.

How dare you get me excited for Christmas in MAY! Sounds like there’s loadsss to do in York around Christmas. I love a Christmas market (even though they’re pretty much all the same haha!) I definitely want to do more Christmassy things in Lincolnshire this year as I’d have moved by then and want to really embrace Christmas in a new place x

York really does look beautiful at Christmas, I can’t even begin to think about Christmas yet though! x

Lucy | http://www.lucymary.co.uk

Your post on Christmas activities in York is enchanting! You’ve captured the festive spirit and offered wonderful suggestions. Thanks for spreading the holiday joy!

These are great things to do. If we spend Christmas in York, I will make sure to try some of these with my partner. Thank you for sharing!

I LOVE York at Christmas! And I’m so happy to be getting excited about it already. Might have to get something booked in.

I don’t live in the UK but these truly sound magical! So many options I would like to visit but the Swiss dining experience caught my eye. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I have in laws that live in the UK so maybe it’s time to plan a family trip thank you for sharing!

I love York at Christmas time – but then again, I love it at any time of the year! When I was at Uni we went to the Minster for a carol service which was lovely, and we used to have drinks in Thor’s at the markets 🙂

I’ll be planning a long trip to York once Jack is a bit older – having read this, I may have to plan it on the run up to Christmas because there is just SO much magic! Rosie

What a lot of great looking activities!

No, not Christmas already! (I work in book retail, so I dread the sound.)

But also, I am definitely going to be in York this coming holiday season, so this list is actually quite excellent (even if I don’t want to think that far ahead). Thanks for sharing!

Oooh you’re early with the Christmas content! Haha. I love York at Christmas time though – It feels extra magical! We’ll definitely be visiting this year. X

All aboard! Unique Santa Brunch Cruise back in NJ for 2023

It's the holiday season across the Great Garden State. A time for cheer and happiness as we get ever so closer to Christmas Day.

From the moment Santa Claus arrives in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the holiday rush moves into overdrive. For parents, it's all about making sure everything is as perfect as can be for the kids.

Not only are Christmas and holiday decorations going up all throughout The Garden State, but plans to take the kids to see Santa is also a must on that list. And fortunately for us, Santa will be making multiple stops in New Jersey this holiday season.

But it goes even beyond that. Sometimes, even the parents might want an escape to see Santa for themselves to get more into the holiday spirit. Even those of us without kids love the joy a visit from Santa brings us.

What's cool about New Jersey is that there's a variety of ways you can meet Santa. For example, what if you can meet Santa while having brunch on a cruise while checking out the skylines of New Jersey and New York City on the Hudson?

If that sounds like a fun and unique way to meet Santa, then we have good news. Seastreak is bringing back its Santa Brunch Cruise around NYC Harbor, which departs from New Jersey.

A cruise along the Hudson is such an amazing experience, no matter what time of year you go. Just before the holiday cruise with Santa, Seastreak offers its sunset cruise.

Here's a quick look at one of those sunset cruises from earlier in the season just to give you an idea of what these cruises are like and where they go. Then, we'll dive into the details for this year's Santa Brunch Cruise happening throughout the holiday season.

(Please note the Santa Brunch Cruise does not operate at night)

  • H4679QSnataliea 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Awful....Save your money!!! Only giving 1 star because I have to! Got to the venue in plenty of time but there was a Travis Scott concert in the same building at the same time meaning ridiculous queues to get through the building/security. Once we finally arrived at the theatre doors, we and a large amount of others were prevented from entering as the show had now begun and we would have to wait until they were going to allow us all in. The show began at 7pm, we got in our seats at 7.26pm. For the next approximately 30 minutes there were people still taking their seats throughout the theatre. We had aisle seats, and for this entire time there was shouting, arguing over who was in the right/wrong seats, people who had the same seat numbers as others, people threatening to pick people up and drag them out of their seats, people shining phones at each other. The staff were shouting and being extremely rude, they were not controlling the matter getting people quickly seated, but instead shouting and adding additional anger to both the people looking for their seats and the people trying to view the stage which was impossible in all the commotion. More and more people were piling in and just standing around the aisles, the staff might aswell not have been there for all their use. The lights on the stage shone so bright and directly at where we were sitting that we had to cover our eyes, I noticed people around me having to do the same. Really unnecessary, cant understand why we needed the lights on us....sort it out lighting technicians! The show itself.......this is not a Cirque performance!! Ive seen CDS in London more than once and this is what I was expecting. I was taking my family for their 1st time and we were all excited to see the performance. I was utterly embarrassed after telling them how amazing it would be. Mistakes throughout one after another, had to keep picking up the hoops to re jump/dive though them, dropping juggling items. Repetitive ariel spinning acts became very boring. There was no excitement to any of the routines, and it was actually boring. There was too much street dance, and absolutely no Christmas feel to the act. We were seated in 205 row G and paid $90 per ticket. I feel robbed and fooled into thinking this was a Cirque show, it was amateur and unrehearsed. The show ended at 8.25pm, what a sad waste of money! In all the Musicals and Shows I have been to see (a lot!), I have never once thought about checking reviews before I bought the tickets, I only wish I did read about this one! And hope others will do! Read more Written December 29, 2023
  • 687elizabethw 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Save your money Don't waste your time nor money. This show was below standards of a CDS show. Many mistakes made, the electronic holiday twist dance music was awful, and it started 15 minutes late. The gentleman next to me slept through most of it. Lacked entertainment and engagement, couldn't wait for it to end. Read more Written December 23, 2023
  • keithwO2410BT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles The worst show and biggest waste of money we have ever really seen. We had been to their shows in Vegas and London so decided to try this one. It was, simply put, the worst show of any type we have ever been to, Amateurish, poor dancing, far too short, a total rip-off to be honest. I'm ashamed to say we paid 660 dollars via the concierge and Ticketmaster. If I could give no stars I would. Do NOT go please or risk being as disappointed and feeling as cheated as we were. Cirque du Soleil should be ashamed of putting their name to this-it is awful. Read more Written December 11, 2023
  • at1441 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Terrible, amateur show This cirque du soleil show was incredibly disappointing. I had seen multiple of these shows before and they were incredible. However, this Christmas NYC show was nothing more than a group of amateur dance routines that TikTok could put to shame. Not sure who choreographed this show, but it was super simple, unimpressive, and I can't believe that I paid over $100 a ticket. Kids in school could have invented the “hip hop” dance numbers and jumping parts. There were 3 cool aerial sequences that you would expect from a Cirque show, but the rest of the show was below mediocre. It was a disgrace to the cirque du soleil name and I really do not recommend. I have contacted the team for a refund. Read more Written December 10, 2023
  • Barry P 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Cirque is No Longer a Premier Show Company Stage lighting was often in the face of audience. For 20% of the show, I couldn’t see because stage spotlights were directly in my face in section 205 row M. Perhaps management should sit in the seats for the show to make EASY adjustments. My automatic sunglasses kicked in when the lights were in my face and then there was recovery time for sunglasses to clear afterward. I agree with reviews that this was a loosely woven storyline and would not return for that reason alone. Instead of thinking of Cirque as a premier performance as I have in the past, i find that they’ve not been purposeful in expansion. A Cirque show is no longer an automatic “yes” to attend. I will have to consider each different show separately, and check reviews to consider spending my money. Now I know why, on a Friday night, there were several empty seats in my section. Perhaps 4 mildly entertaining acts held together by amateurish choreagrapy. An overall disappointing production. We did the Local Expert Tour - Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Priority Fast Track Tickets in English, with Vivian, and it was the best experience! She was extremely knowledgeable about the history of both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and was able to answer all of our questions. Vivian was professional, clear on instructions, kept the group together, kept us engaged, and made the experience fun and exciting! She was also very personable and talked to us about where we lived and about NYC and its history. It is great conversing with her! Even when a few people stay longer on one island, she made sure to keep and eye out for them so that she could give them the same history that she gave the rest of the group. She went above and beyond to make sure the Spanish speaking members of our group understood everything. Highly recommend doing this tour and if you can get her as a tour guide, DO IT!!!! • kingboy72 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Soft tacos were like eating dip for lunch! Scoped out the many places to find a quick, easy lunch during my window shopping at Albany's premier outdoor mall and decided to try Chipotle. Never being there before the nice server led me through the options. My mouth dropped when my lunch totaled over $18 with tax. The tables were not cleaned nor was the floor under the tables and my soft tacos had to be eaten with a spoon. Their chips were good and the drink tasty but eating the soft tacos was like eating dip as a meal. I looked up the price of their stock and nearly fainted! Apparently, my tastes need an upgrade! • Joy T 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do not recommend Appalling customer service. Booked a shared airport pick up with Viator and partner Attractions4us. This was for 1pm. We had received our luggage by 12.20 so sat outside in indicated waiting area for pickup. As this was a shared service we had booked (and had received confirmation from Viator of 13.00 pick up) we knew we’d have to wait. At 12.51 received a message to contact our driver - straight away tried to ring but took a few minutes as was calling from UK phone so had to add credit. Couldn’t get through. Tried again, left message on answerphone. Also contacted Attractions4us by phone (tried twice, first time got ‘cannot answer your call at the moment, next time left answerphone message. Also sent texts and emails stating where we were and that we were waiting for our airport pick up. Tried the first number for driver again but told he’d ‘waited an hour then left’. Why did he leave when our booking was for 1 pm? If he’d been waiting- where? Why hadn’t Attractions4us clarified with us where we should wait? Why didn’t the driver call us? Attractions4us first of all claimed s/he had phoned several times but no calks were received (I sent Attractions4us a screenshot to show no incoming calls). I tried in several ways to contact driver/Attractions4us (phone , text, email). Eventually at 13.35 gave up and got an Uber (definitely recommend this to others arriving at Buffalo airport. Do NOT use Viator or Attractions4us.). We’d been up since 4am and needed to get to our hotel. No apology from Attractions4us only a request for $55 dollars if we wished to rebook. Terrible customer service. I have requested refund from Viator and look forward to hearing from them. To be fair, I have used Viator airport pick ups and tours all over the world and have never had cause to complain until today. Not sure if fault is with them or Attractions4us. But take me advice- avoid and get an Uber or similar. Read more Written April 18, 2022
  • DaltonGirls3 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not worth the money! After attending several Cirque Du Soleil shows in the past, our family was EXTREMELY disappointed with this show! By far the worst representation of this organization thus far. I'm sure the entire cast & crew work extremely hard, but it definitely did not live up to our expectation, especially given all the other Broadway shows we could have seen instead! Way too much "hip hop" and Tik Tok dance moves that my teenagers could probably do better! Even they couldn’t believe how much worse this show was in comparison to others we had seen! After all lines and inspections on The Edge Observatory, My family and I Were taken out of the line because the ticket that I have from this company, printed, didn't work. the Edge observatory got me out of the attraction because the QR code is not in The Edge Observatory format. I was sent to the Edge dept. that try to help me and call them and solve the situation but they didn't answer at that time, and later by email or by phone or on their supposed physical address office, I didn't get any solution or my money back. I could buy a new set there because on the holiday the attraction was fully booked. I lost my money and nobody is doing anything to give my money back or a new Tkt for my next visit to NYC. Cruise ship sails into New York City port with 44-foot dead whale across its bow

A cruise ship sailed into a New York City port with a 44-foot dead whale across its bow, marine authorities said.

The whale, identified as an endangered sei whale, was caught on the ship’s bow when it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn on Saturday, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez said.

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises said the whale was on the MSC Meraviglia, which docked at Brooklyn before sailing to ports in New England and Canada.

Cruise ship sails into New York City port with 44-foot dead whale across its bow.

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” officials with the cruise line said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life,” the officials said, adding that the Geneva-based MSC Cruises follows all regulations designed to protect whales, such as altering itineraries in certain regions to avoid hitting the animals.

The dead whale was relocated to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and towed to shore there to allow for better access to equipment and to conduct a necropsy, Gomez said.

The necropsy, an autopsy on an animal, was conducted on Tuesday, Gomez said. Samples collected from the whale will help biologists determine whether it was already dead when it was struck by the ship, she said.

Sei whales are typically observed in deeper waters far from the coastline, Gomez said. They are one of the largest whale species and are internationally protected.

Tom Cruise's tearaway daughter Suri seen with mom Katie for first time since ditching father’s name

Suri Cruise has been spotted out with her mom for the first time since it was revealed she's ditched her dad's name after years of no contact .

The daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes was seen spending some time with her mom in New York as they headed out for dinner at a swanky restaurant. The pair wore matching denim outfits, with Suri opting for jeans and a chic denim jacket.

The 18-year-old also wore a white crop top and styled her hair into a messy up-do. Katie looked super stylish as she wrapped up in a beige knitted jumper and matching trench coat. Their outing comes after it was reported Suri has dropped her Hollywood star dad's last name and is instead going by a moniker which pays tribute to her mom.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' $400,000-a-year divorce and Suri's estrangement as she ditches dad's name

Tom Cruise, 61, goes topless and shows off his ripped physique as he takes a dip in Mallorca

According to Hello! Magazine , Suri's new title is simply Suri Noelle and was spotted in the playbill of her school production of The Go-Go's jukebox musical, Head Over Heels. The new name would see Suri taking on the middle name of her mom, 45, while completely blanking any link to Tom, 61.

Tom is said to have felt guilty after missing his daughter's 18th birthday recently after he was busy filming in London. A source told Heat shortly after her celebration: "Tom is feeling guilty about missing so much of her life, but insists that he hasn’t completely shut Suri out of his life, and does get updates from time to time."

They added Tom had made the deal to "allow her and her mother to live their own lives because that was what Katie wanted". Tom's estrangement from his daughter comes after Katie was awarded "sole custody" of Suri in their divorce settlement.

Katie filed for divorce from Tom in June 2012 and asked for legal custody, primary residential custody and a "suitable amount" of child support from her husband as part of the settlement. The actress also asked for a division of property in the divorce documents. On July 9 2012, Katie's lawyer confirmed her divorce with Tom had been settled.

Tom agreed as part of their settlement to pay $400,000 per year in child support. The agreement lasted until Suri turned 18 last month. Tom also agreed to pay all of Suri's expenses, including medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extracurricular costs.
