How To Reach?

Bengaluru has excellent railway connectivity with major cities across India. From Bengaluru, you can catch a train to Mangalore, the nearest major railway station to Kudremukh. The journey typically takes about 8-10 hours. You can hire a private cab from Mangalore or catch a local bus to Kudremukh, which is approximately 130 kilometres away and takes around 3-4 hours.

Regular state-run KSRTC buses are available from Bengaluru to Kudremukh. The bus journey can take around 8-9 hours. Shared cabs might also be available from the bus station to the starting point of the trek.

Private or shared cabs from Bengaluru to Kudremukh are another option, though they can be more expensive. The distance is approximately 350 kilometres and can take around 7-8 hours, depending on the traffic and road conditions.

By Private Vehicle:

Kudremukh Trek Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Kudremukh the “trekkers paradise” and the 3rd highest peak in Karnataka was going to be my next destination. Kudremukh which means “Horse Face” in Kannada because the peak resembles the horse’s face. Didn’t give any thought about the fitness before leaving. But trust me if you are not fit please don’t even try this trek. It has a lush green landscape which you can adore for a lifetime. Also, you can get a similar picture to the bliss theme(Windows XP wallpaper). One of the most important things is carrying your Aadhar copy for the permit which I’ll tell in detail further.

The best time to visit the Kudremukh trek

The best time to visit Kudremukh would be after the Monsoon from October to March. You can go after March as well but it starts getting hotter which makes the trekking harder. During the monsoon, a lot of leeches can be found hanging everywhere make sure to cover your full body with clothes.

How to reach from Bangalore to Kudremukh

I started my trip from Bangalore in the night. So to reach Kudremukh there are no direct buses instead we have to get down at Kalasa and from Kalasa take another bus to the base of Kudremukh Trek. There are not a lot of buses from Kalasa to the base of the Kudremukh trek, thus do check the bus timings beforehand. You can either book a seater or sleeper based on your choice. Sugama Tourist and KSRTC provide the bus to Kalasa. The price starts from ₹375 to ₹650 for seater and sleeper respectively.

I took the seater and the bus reached Kalasa in the early morning by 5 am. It was pitch dark and very cold so make sure to carry at least one woollen clothing with you. The bus drops you near the police station. Take a right from there and after going a few steps ahead you’ll find the petrol pump from where you’ll get the next bus to Kudremukh. It surely made me feel like I should settle here in the calmness of the town. The people of the town were also very simple and humble. The city buses start at 6:30 in the morning. The distance from Kalasa to the base of Kudremukh trek is approximately 10Kms. The bus charges ₹20 only.

If going with a group you can get down at Balegal.  Once you get down at Balegal you can hire a jeep, which will drop you to the forest office for permission and also take you to the base camp of the Kudremukh trek. The jeep costs Rs 150-200 per person. For solo travelers, you can directly go on the bus to Kudremukh check post forest gate 2. But you can only do the trek if you manage to find a group in which you can fit in.

Things to know about trekking in Kudremukh.

The first and the most important thing is the Aadhar copy without which you wouldn’t get the permit to trek. The permit charges are ₹425 per person which you have to pay at the forest office. Once you have the permit you can go back in the jeep to the base camp. The base camp(Mulodi) is 6 Km from Balegal. Hold on to your seat well, ’cause this is gonna be one hell of a ride. The trek is 18 km both ways and usually takes 4-5 hours one way. The trekking is not allowed after 9:30 am.

Where to stay in Kudremukh

The forest officer will say there is no place to stay near the base camp. But trust me you can stay in Raje Gowda’s home which is right at the base camp. Once you reach the base camp you can keep your luggage in his place and freshen up. If you are carrying your tent he will charge you ₹500 for pitching your tent and 4 times food(2 Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner). But if you want a room in his place you will have to pay him ₹ 700.

Kudremukh trek base camp: The beginning of lush green landscapes.

On leaving the Raje Gowda’s homestay, make sure to pack some lunch for yourself. You need to have a guide for this trek or else you can’t do this trek. The guide charges ₹300 – ₹500 per person based on how good you can bargain. The trek starts from the forest office in the base camp. Please don’t litter the national park as while coming back the bags and if you have left anything on the trek they will fine you. I started the trek at 9:15 AM The start of the trek is easy, all you see is lush green mountains. On the way, you see a lot many boards which tell you about the animals in the national park. You would be lucky if you spot even one of them all, I could find was leeches(insect).

The Kudremukh permit fee is ₹ 600 per person

The first stop: picturesque tree

Trekking almost a kilometre you’ll find a tree, which is a great place for photography and you can take a 5-minute break. The peak is also seen from here. You can carry one water bottle which is sufficient as you will find many water streams from where you can drink the water directly. The Kudremukh trekking route is just amazing with the green landscape on the bottom and white clouds at the top. On going further you will cross a couple of water streams. The first 4-5 km of the trek is easy.

The second stop: Another picturesque tree

I wonder did someone planted these trees and made them resting spots or if these trees were already present and people stopped here for photography and then they became resting spots. Beyond this tree, the main trek starts. You find your first steep climb. Make sure to have a good breakfast at the start of the trek and don’t be like me. I almost gave up because I hadn’t eaten my breakfast until the guide told me to have something. So everyone went front and after finishing my breakfast I started the trek again.

You just can’t stop admiring the place. The peak looks even closer now. After every km, there is a water stream. The water is so cold and drinkable, which makes you feel so refreshed.

Almost reached the second steep, this time I felt better to climb it but then since not being fit, I did make many stops. It was already 1 pm, and our guide told us to hurry up as while getting down it would get dark.

The summit: Finally did it!

During the trek, I had given up so many times but I don’t know what still kept me going. And after almost 4 hours I did reach the summit. Had some lunch there, rested for a while, and took some photos. The peak is all covered in the clouds. No visibility because of the clouds and it gets cold as well. After taking some deserved rest and some decent photos we start to trek down. Getting down is easier but is risky as well. One wrong step and you might hurt yourself very badly.

The Descent: Kudremukh trek

The descent was again very picturesque and it took a total of 3 hours. After reaching the base the forest officers checked our bag whether we hadn’t left anything in the national park. Reaching the homestay I had some snacks and pitched my tent. Since it was almost drizzling I placed my tent on the house verandah. After having dinner early(8 pm) I dozed off. In the night it did rain heavily. Mind you there is no or less signal in the homestay.

Day 2: Time to see some falls

I got up by 8 am and started preparing for the day. I had enquired everyone about the famous Hanuman Gundi Falls. Since they have closed it I planned to go see another fall – Ellaneru Falls. After having some breakfast I left the homestay. You can tell the owner of the homestay to call the jeep. Since I preferred to walk down to click some good photos. On the way found an old man who too was walking down. And I spoke with him in Kannada. I guess I hadn’t spoken so much Kannada in the last 14 years, how much I spoke in the last 2 days. It surely made the people feel good as well.

I reached the bus stop and took the bus to Samse. The bus ticket was just ₹8.

The hidden falls: Ellaneru falls

After reaching Samse I asked one of the localite about the direction to the falls. After walking for almost 2 km, I was almost inside the forest. Very few houses could now be seen. I asked in one of the houses and they told me it’s just 1km(Which never got over). I started walking but then there came a time when there was no one seen on the path. It gets scary when you are solo traveling to places like these. After going further I found 2 bikers coming top. Upon enquiring with them they told me the falls is another 200mts. Found some relief, reached the falls, and found no one there.  I relaxed for some time there and had to rush because of a lot of leeches. On the way back stopped at some beautiful streams which had some beautiful rice fields at the back. Once you reach the main road you can take an auto to the bust stop it will just be ₹20.

The Beauty of Samse: Tea Plantation

My next stop was a tea plantation spot. It was just the next stop. It was already 3 pm and I had started to starve. I decided to finish seeing the tea plantation soon and catch the bus to Kalasa. Upon reaching there on the left you can see the water flowing and on the right is the beautiful tea plantation. It is a must-visit place if you come for the Kudremukh trek.

Final Stop Kalasa: The trip is over

After spending 30 mins at the tea plantation I took the bus back to Kalasa and had some amazing egg-fried rice at a local restaurant for 70 Rs. It was already 4:30 pm, and my bus was in the night at 9 pm. So I just stayed in the waiting space for the bus which smelled bad but didn’t have any other place to go either. The time just passed and it was already 8 pm, so preferred to have dinner soon. Had loved the fried rice so much and ordered the same thing with half a plate of chicken which cost me ₹150. And to digest everything had some Soda which was ₹25. The bus was on time and after sitting on the bus I don’t remember when I slept. Reached Bangalore early morning by 6 am. This was the end of an adventurous trip. Kudremukh trek taught me a lot of things: Try to always be fit, and never skip food while traveling. It was a great learning overall.

• The distance between Bangalore and Kudremukh is 332 km and it takes 9 hrs
• KSRTC and Sugama tourist buses will drop you at Kalasa from where you have to take the city bus.
• The best time to visit Kudremukh is from October to March

• The permit fee is ₹425 per person
• From Balegal, Mullodi is 6 km from where the trek starts
• Trek length is 18 km both ways and it usually takes 8-9 hrs to complete the whole trek

Kudremukh trek is a must-see if you’re in Bangalore, and it’s well-known among trekkers for its stunning scenery. This is a round journey that includes more than 10 streams to cross as well as wide meadows. Kudremukh means “horse’s face” in Kannada. The unusual form of the summit inspired its name. How long does it take to trek Kudremukh?

The Kudremukh trek is an easy to moderate hike that takes around 11.5 kilometers one way from Mullodi to the peak. Because you are not permitted to camp or remain overnight, you must return all the way to Mullodi. So, a total of around 23 kilometers must be accomplished in one day, which is achievable. Can novices attempt the Kudremukh Trek? – Yes, of course. This hike is suitable for first-time hikers and nature enthusiasts.

It’s not that difficult to complete the Kudremukh trek. I would strongly advise you to undertake this on your own because it is more of a DIY trek and a one-day journey. Kalasa/Kudremukh is the nearest town, and there are direct buses from Mangalore, Bangalore, and Udupi. The distance from Bangalore is 340 kilometers. As a result, board an overnight bus to Kalasa or Kudremukh. From Kalasa Bus, you may trek on your own or contact the base camp owner (homestay) – Raje Gowda (Ph: 9481179008), who can organize pickup and drop-off at the base camp/homestay as well as an overnight stay if you wish to stay for a long time and depart the next day.

Kudremukh Trek Route

Kudremukh trek begins at the base camp/Mullodi guesthouse, where the forest department headquarters is located. Purchase admission tickets to the forest. This is the last home before the trek begins. You will have to cross more than ten creeks. The Kudremukh trek trail features a 30-degree incline.

Carry a raincoat during the Kudremukh trek and be prepared for severe rain and cold wind once you reach the summit. There is no need to bring an extra water bottle because there are several streams even as you reach the summit. When you reach the top, bring a packed lunch, spend some time there, and then return the same way to the base camp around 5 or 6:00 p.m. During the monsoon season, you should pack salt and soak your socks in saltwater before wearing them to keep the leech away. There are also creams that are readily available at any medical store.

The Kudremukh hike is a one-day excursion. Here’s how to plan for the Kudremukh trek and have a fun weekend. Leave Bangalore on Friday night at 10:00-10:30 p.m. via Karnataka Sarige (about 500 rupees)/Volvo bus from Kempegowda Bus Stand. Arrive at the Kalasa Bus Stop around 5:00 a.m.

You may reserve a jeep in advance by calling Raje Gowda, as well as the Kudremukh trek. The jeep trip (Rs. 500 to 700 – one way for 5 people) takes about an hour to reach the base camp/Mullodi guesthouse. There are two large rooms, each with its own bathroom. After breakfast, freshen up at base camp and be ready to start hiking by 8:00 a.m.

How to plan for Kudremukh trek

When you return from your journey from the Kudremukh trek, have a hot water bath at the base camp, followed by warm food and tea, and prepare for the campfire. You may either spend the night at the homestay and depart the next day for Bangalore, or you can leave the same day. From 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., buses leave from the Kalasa Bus Stand. You will arrive in Bangalore around 4:00 a.m. Raje Gowda would charge Rs 650 for breakfast, packed lunch, evening snacks, supper, overnight lodging, hot water, and breakfast the next day (as of 2014).

Don’t forget to obtain forest department clearance by paying Rs. 275; else, as the locals would warn you, you may end up in trouble. Because this is a national park, the forest authority is tough about poaching. You must submit your information and pay the fee at the homestay. The aforementioned fee is current as of this writing and is subject to change. Mobile signal quality may be an issue at base camp, but as you climb higher, you should expect full signal strength.

Kudremukh National Park – Kurinjal

In brief, the Kudremukh trek may be completed in one day. The next day, in addition to the Kudremukh trek, you could wish to explore another famous hiking track, Kurinjal Peak, which is a bit shorter but is a perfect weekend trip from here.

Kurinjal is a lesser-known peak in the Kuduremukh National Park, that acts as the perfect destination for people seeking a respite from the fast-paced and stressful city life. The trekking trail abounds in a mesmerizing natural beauty that is further enhanced by the calm and peaceful ambiance of the region.

Undertaking the trek takes the participants to another world, where the noise and pollution of the concrete jungles are replaced by picturesque surroundings, a breathtaking landscape, and an enchanting environment. As raw nature unravels itself at every step of the Kurinjal trek, it tickles the drowsy nerves of the participants and makes them feel truly alive besides redefining their concept of beauty and satisfaction.

Introduction to Kudremukha

Kudremukha, translating to the ‘head of a horse’ in Kannada, is one of the prominent peaks in the Western Ghats. Ranking as the third highest peak in this mountain range, it reaches an elevation of 1892 meters (6207 feet). It claims the second-highest position among Karnataka’s mountains, following Mullayana Giri.

The trekking trail winds through lush valleys and the encompassing hills, offering a journey worth undertaking. The stunning greenery throughout the trek adds to the allure, making the entire experience captivating.

How to Get to Base of Kudremukha?

• By Road – Traveling by road is the optimal and most convenient way to reach Kudremukha. Situated in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, the mountain is approximately 320 kilometres away from Bangalore. Due to the unsealed roads, the journey from the Mullodi forest checkpoint to the trek’s base camp requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

While trekking through the national park, keep a vigilant eye out for wildlife. During our hike, we encountered a bison, emphasizing the importance of caution. Maintaining a safe distance from wildlife and avoiding confrontation is crucial, especially with the robust and sizable bison. Exercise extreme care when in their vicinity.

• Upon reaching Kalasa, local buses or auto-rickshaws are available to transport you to the mountain base, Mullodi. To access the homestay, which also serves as the base camp for the trek, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary.

For those considering air travel, the nearest international airport is located in Mangalore, approximately 100 kilometres away from Mullodi.

Logistics of Kudremukh a Trek

• Starting and Finishing Points : Mullodi village.
• Trek to the peak: The round-trip distance from the base camp is approximately 20 to 22 kilometres. The base camp is situated at a homestay in Mullodi village.
• Grade: The trek difficulty level is categorized as moderate to difficult. While the trail is reasonably well-defined, it is advisable to hire a guide. This recommendation is primarily due to the abundant wildlife in the area. The trek fee for hiring a guide is approximately INR 1000 per person.

• Suitable for : Experienced trekkers.
• Best Season : The ideal seasons for trekking in Kudremukha are spring, winter, and summer, spanning from October to May. While trekking might be challenging during the monsoons, the mountains exhibit a breathtaking allure with lush greenery and scenic beauty amid the rains.
• The trek must be undertaken between 6 AM and 6 PM, and all trekkers are required to exit the national park range before 6 PM.
• Note: Overnight stays within the Kudremukha National Park are prohibited; therefore, you must return to the home stay. A daily limit of 150 people is imposed for trekking. Given the abundant wildlife, exercise caution and stay vigilant for bison or birds during the trek. The base camp is easily accessible via a short jeep ride from the nearest village.

• The homestay provided basic village food, contributing to the authentic experience.
• Accommodations were in tents pitched near the home stay, adding to the overall charm of the trip.

Important Tips

• Forest Department Permission : To embark on the Kudremukha trek, acquiring a permit at the Mullodi forest checkpost is essential. A trekking fee of INR 525 is applicable for venturing into the forest on this trek. For the most current and accurate information regarding the trekking fee, it is advisable to check with the forest check post directly.
• Light Backpacks: Keep your backpacks lightweight. Tents at the homestay can secure them.
• Wildlife Caution: Beware of scorpions and other wildlife. Zip up your backpacks; my friend found a baby scorpion after our trek.
• Ample Water: Carry sufficient water for the trek.
• Sturdy Footwear: Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes.
• Respect Wildlife: Do not disturb or engage with wildlife.
• Garbage Disposal: Carry your garbage; do not litter.
• Flashlight: Bring a torch in case it gets dark before exiting the national park.
• Time Management: Ensure you exit the national park before 6 PM.
• Mind Your Steps: Be mindful of where you step.
• Extra Socks: Carry an extra pair of socks for unforeseen blisters during the trek.
• Day Pack Essentials: Use a small, lightweight day pack for sunscreen, snacks, extra socks, a first-aid kit and water.
• Leech Protection: Be prepared for leeches, especially during monsoons. A solution of Dettol (1/4th) and water (3/4th) works best. Leech socks are advisable during the trek.

Trekking Kudremukha by Yourself

Planning a trip to Kudremukha independently is certainly feasible, although it’s recommended to engage a local guide. The local guide charges are typically around INR 1000 per group. The forest department restricts entry to the national park, issuing a limited number of tickets (approximately 150 people). A trekking fee of INR 575 per person is required and should be paid at the forest checkpoint.

Remember to carry a government-issued identification, such as an Aadhar card, that includes your photograph and address for necessary documentation.

Is Trekking in Kudremukha Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

As a standard practice, it’s advisable to embark on the Kudremukha trek with a group or, at the very least, a trekking companion. Specifically for the Kudremukha trek, I recommend either opting for a tour agency or hiring a guide at the mountain’s base. This precaution is crucial due to the abundant wildlife in the park. Additionally, make sure to register at the Mullodi forest check post (Kudremukha Forest Department) before commencing the trek.

Solo treks are not recommended. Instead, it’s safer to rely on the guidance provided by the forest department or trustworthy locals for trekking information.

The Complete Guide to Kudremukh Trek

Kudremukh literally means horse’s face in Kannada. This name is because of the distinctive shape of the peak. This is also called Samseparvath historically, as it used to be accessible from Samse village.

Kudremukh peak is nestled in the heart of the western ghats in Chikkamagaluru district. It comes under Kudremukh National Park which is the second-largest wildlife protected area in the western ghats. 

It is situated at an altitude of 6,207 ft and is the 3rd highest peak of Karnataka after Mullayyangiri and Baba Budangiri.

Kudremukh is a home for many flora and fauna. You can even spot deer and peacocks on the way, amongst other wildlife, while trekking!

It is a beautiful trek across the rolling green hills and misty valleys. You traverse through grasslands, forest and many small streams.

What to pack for Kudremukh Trek

➤ What to Watch out for

1. the horse’s face structure of the peak.

The Kudremukh peak has a unique structure that looks like a horse’s face from the side. This structure is visible after an hour of trekking from the forest office. This looks closer but there is another 3 hours of trekking to reach that point.

2. Trekking inside the Shola forest

Shola is a local name for grassland and shrublands that are visible in the western ghats. You have to trek through shola forest to reach the Kudremukh peak.

This forest is home to many wildlife species, like deer, lion-tailed macaque, Malabar giant squirrel, leopard, common langur and many more. If you are lucky enough, you spot them while trekking. During monsoon season, you can find leeches for every step in this section. The forest is also home for some of the rarest species of frogs that are found here.

One of the fascinating parts of this section is the waterfalls and small streams. You have to cross many streams on the way to the peak. Sometimes you may have to wet your shoes while crossing.

3. Spectacular View of the Rolling Hills

Picture this: green hills stretching as far as you can see, with valleys filled with mist weaving through them. Imagine being here during the monsoon—the whole area covered in thick mist, making it feel magical. The valleys play peek-a-boo with the clouds, creating a view that changes constantly.

It's like a dream where hills covered in lush greenery meet misty valleys, and during the monsoon, everything is hidden in a beautiful mist. The mix of clouds, mist, and hills creates a breathtaking scene, making each moment special. Standing here, you become part of a nature show, witnessing the beauty of hills and valleys playing hide and seek with the mist. It's a simple but incredible experience, where nature's elements come together to create a timeless and enchanting landscape.

➤ Trail Information on the Kudremukh Trek

Kudremukh Trek can be divided into 3 sections. They are:

• A gradual ascent from forest office to ontimara.
• Trek from Ontimara to the Ridge.
• The Ridge walk to the peak.

Section I: From Forest Office to Ontimara (Lone tree)

Trek distance: 5 km Trek duration: 2 hours GPS coordinates of the forest office:   13° 9'6.61"n, 75°18'16.49"e GPS coordinates of the Ontimara 2:   13° 8'5.27"n, 75°17'3.87"e

Reach the forest office as early as possible to get permission. The trek starts at the forest office. You can hear the sound of the water falling at Somawathi Falls, and it stays with you for a distance before you get on to the forest trail. 

Once you enter the Shola forest notice the thickening of the vegetation. You can spot wildlife here if you are lucky enough. This forest is home to many leeches, earthworms deers and snakes.

After 15 minutes of a gradual ascent, you get to cross a stream. Water level will be high if you are trekking in the monsoon. There are ropes put up by the forest department to help you cross the stream during peak monsoon season.

Tips:  Wear proper trekking shoes and carry a trekking pole as well. These two will help you while crossing the stream.

Apply Dettol or Savlon before the start of the trek to avoid leeches. Just let it be and remove once you reach the grassland or summit if you find any.

You encounter many waterfalls and small streams until you reach the first lonely tree.

As soon as you exit the forest section, you can see the first Ontimara inviting you with space underneath. That spot is surrounded by a wide canopy. This tree has proper seating arrangements beneath it with excellent views of the valley. You get to see the stream flowing down the valley and the rolling hills in front of you.

From the first Ontimara, the trail is flat with Kudremukh Valley on your right and a mountain on your left. You will be trekking on the grassland with occasional dense trees. After trekking for a few kilometers, you will reach a stream, which you have to cross. After the stream, you reach a flat clearing with clear views of Kudremukh Peak Ridge. This section turns sluchy during the monsoons. If you go early in the morning, you might get lucky and spot a herd of deer. After a walk on the straight section for a kilometer, you reach a steep ascent of about 300 meters. After the ascent, you reach the second Ontimara.

If you are calculating from the forest office, it will take 2 hours to reach the distinctive mark point of the second Ontimara.

Section II: Ontimara to Final stretch

Trek distance: 3 km Trek duration:  1 hour GPS coordinates of the Ontimara 2:   13° 8'5.27"n, 75°17'3.87"e GPS coordinates of the final stretch:   13° 8'6.59"n, 75°16'22.27"e

The trek from the second Ontimara has a combination of trekking through a gentle slope and also a steep ascent as you approach the last leg of your trek. This section is very scenic and you get to see the beautiful rolling green hills.

After 20 minutes of a gradual trek from the first stop, the trail starts to get steeper. As you start ascending, Kudremukh valley becomes more visible. 

This is the most beautiful part of the trek! The peak is right in front of your eyes and the excitement begins as you are about to reach the summit i.e Kudremukh Peak.

Tip: The trekking pole can be used here. It will give you the support required to ascend the mountain.

Section III: Final stretch to the Kudremukh Peak

Trek distance: 1 km Trek duration: 30 minutes GPS coordinates for the final stretch:   13° 8'6.59"n, 75°16'22.27"e GPS coordinates for the Kudremukh peak:   13° 7'35.39"n, 75°16'26.06"e

You should reach this point at around 12 noon if you are starting your trek at 8 am. Take a break and drink some water. Enjoy the view.

You can see the trail that leads to the Peak. From here, another 35 minutes of a climb to reach the top.

At the peak, you will see a board and also many stones piled up.

You are at the top of the Kudremukh now. To see the best view, you need to go a little down to the ledge. Make some space to sit. This place can get very windy.

You can see the 270-degree view of the uneven green carpets if you are lucky. For most times at the peak, you will be surrounded by clouds and mist. You hardly get a window to capture the view. Be patient and enjoy the play of clouds. If you are lucky, the spectacular view is something worth taking back from the trek. 

The tranquillity around makes you feel satisfied. Do not forget to have lunch in that setting.

The descent is the same route as you came up. 

Your Turn Around Time (TAT) at all cost should be at 1 pm. Make sure you start descending at 1 pm sharp from any position of your trek. You will need a minimum of 3 hours to descend down. Also, the Forest department has restrictions after 6 pm.

The descent can be tricky at the steep sections. Forest section also can be slippery if it is raining heavily. Make sure you use the trekking pole correctly. Watch the video here to know about using the trekking pole.

➤ Best Time to do the Kudremukh Trek

The best season to do Kudremukh is from June to February. However, the Kalasa region receives pleasant weather throughout the year. 

During monsoon and winter, you can see many small streams, dark shola forest, bamboo shrubs tall enough to touch the sky and rolling green hills.

Some of the sections of the trek involve trekking under the open sky. Hence, trekking in the summer is not recommended.

➤ How to reach Kudremukh Trek

The Kudremukh trek starts from Mullodi village which is around 15 km from Kalasa. Reaching Mullodi directly is not easy. 

You have to first reach Kudremukh Entrance which is about 10 km from Kalasa. From the Entrance point, hire a jeep to Mullodi village where you get the forest office. This is where you have to take permission and begin your trek. 

One can reach Kalasa by own vehicle or using public transportation and from there to Kudremukh Entrance point. Find the detailed information below.

To reach Kalasa, there are multiple routes available from Bangalore. The best route is to go via Hasan. 

Get on to the Chikkamagaluru road and continue until you reach Kottigehara. At the Kottigehara Junction take the right that goes towards Kalasa. Continue on the same road until you reach Kalasa police station. Take a left from the Police station junction towards Balagal to reach the Kudremukh Entrance point. 

The road from the entrance to the forest office is not good. Hence, park your vehicle near one of the shops at the entrance and get into the jeep from there. There will be many jeeps standing at the entrance. You can ask them to drop you to the forest office or any homestay if you have pre-booked. They charge you around Rs 150 per person. 

Tip: Inform one of the homestay owners on the previous day to arrange a jeep. It will be cheaper than booking on the spot. They charge you around Rs 600 including pickup, drop, breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.

How can I go to Kudremukh from Bangalore by bus?

The base village Kalasa is easily accessible by public transport. There are many buses from Bangalore to Horanadu via Kalasa to be booked online at KSRTC website . 

You can book an overnight bus to Horanadu and get down at Kalasa bus station. The distance from Bangalore to Kalasa is 310 km. 

You will reach Kalasa by 6 am if you have taken the overnight bus at around 10.30 PM. From Kalasa, you get a bus that goes towards Balagal village. Inform conductor to drop you at Kudremukh Entrance. It is a 10 km journey. 

The overall bus journey from Bangalore to Kudremukh entrance costs you around Rs 750. 

There are also plenty of Karnataka Sarige buses which are seater buses. They will cost you less than half of the sleeper bus if you want to cut down on your budget.

Once you get down at Kudremukh entrance point, you can see many jeeps waiting at the entrance. Talk to the jeep person and ask him to drop you at the forest office. You will have to pay Rs 200 per person if you have not booked in advance. You can also walk to the forest office if you reach early. This is another 5 km walk from the entrance. 

Return Option

You can book a return ticket from Kalasa on the same day itself. 

You can get the bus from Kudremukh Entrance point that goes towards Kalasa for every 15 minutes. From Kalasa you can take any bus that goes to Bangalore.

➤ Difficult Sections on the Kudremukh Trek

The Kudremukh trek is of moderate difficulty. You need to cover 9 km one way. 

There are no difficult sections as such but note down a few things to keep in mind while trekking.

• Trekking in the forest section can be slippery. Make sure you wear proper trekking shoes and a trekking pole.
• Crossing the small streams in the forest is a tricky part. The mossy rocks in the water can be slippery.
• The trail from the second Ontimara to the final stretch has a steep ascent of 3 km. You should be fit enough to trek in those sections if you want to enjoy the view.

1. is there any permission required to do the kudremukh trek.

Kudremukh trek needs permission as it is a part of Kudremukh National Park in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. The entry fee is Rs 600 per person. In 2023, the carrying capacity for the trek has been increased to 300 per day. Earlier, it used to be only the first 50 people getting permission in a day. 

Trekkers can apply to reserve their participation by filling in the details here - https://kudremukhanationalpark.in/?page_id=1608 However, you still need to go towards the Forest office at Basrikal and enter a few details as per the formalities.

If you are staying in any of the homestays, you can ask the owner to help you with permission. Or else you need to reach the forest office early in the morning and get permission. During the weekends, expect a long line of people standing in the morning (It can even take up 2-3 hrs for trekkers to get permission by filling in details according to the format the forest department expects)

2. Is taking a guide mandatory for this Kudremukh Trek?

The forest department has made it mandatory for trekkers to have a guide on the trek of Kudremukh. You don't have to book this guide in advance. The forest department will assign one and they will either meet you at the Forest office of Basrikal or at the checkpost before starting on the trek. The ratio of 1:10 is followed as a thumbrule. Camping on the Kudremukh trek is not allowed. However, there are many homestays that offer tent stay at the starting point. 

4. Are there any food stalls and water sources on the Kudremukh trek?

Homestays in Mullodi village (near the forest office) provide food for the trekkers. However, one has to book it in advance. They charge you around Rs 200 for breakfast and a packed lunch. 

If you are trekking in the monsoon season, you find many streams and waterfalls on the trail. You can fill your bottle from there. 

A good step by the forest department is towards sustainable trekking. All trekkers will have to go through a check at the forest checkpost, where the backpacks are scanned before you start on the trek.

Packaged food items like Chips, biscuits or chocolates are not allowed in your bags. So ensure you keep all the food inside your reusable dabba. If you are carrying a mineral water bottle, then it will be counted before you start, and you need to ensure about getting it back. Otherwise, you will be penalised with a fine by the forest department. So again, it is better if you are carrying a reusable and fillable water bottle.

If you are not comfortable with drinking groundwater, fill the water bottle at the homestay itself. Make sure you carry a minimum of 2 litres of water. 

Tip : If you are not comfortable with having water from the stream or homestay, carry purification tablets or life straw bottles to purify the water.

5. Can beginners do Kudremukh trek?

The total distance of Kudremukh trek is 18 km. It requires endurance and a little bit of trekking experience to complete the trek in a day. 

There are no technical sections on the trek. Hence, a fit beginner also can attempt this. 

6. What is the best time to start the Kudremukh trek?

The best time to do the Kudremukh is to start as early as possible in the morning. You need 4-5 hours to reach the peak and again 2.5 to 3.5 hours to return. There is a restriction from the forest office that you can not trek after 6 PM. You need to be back to the homestay by then.

Also, in the western ghats, the weather turns windy after 2 PM. Make sure you reach the summit before 1 PM and come back before 6 PM. 

7. Why is it called Kudremukh?

Kudremukh literally translates to Horse's face. The peak is called Kudremukh because it resembles the face of horse.

• Ballarayanadurga Fort Trek : This fort is a part of the Bandaje trek. One can do this from Durgadahalli. This route is easier compared to the Ujire route. This is 36 km from Kudremukh Entrance.
• Aane Gudda Trek : This trek starts from Haluvalli. You have to take a deviation from Kalasa to reach the base. This is 15 km from the Kudremukh Entrance.
• Meruti Hill : This is the 7th highest peak of Karnataka. The trek starts from Basarikatte. This place is very close to Horanadu temple. Basarikatte is 30 km from Kudremukh Entrance.

Towards Mangalore

• Lakya Dam Lake: This dam is built across the river Lakya, a tributary of the Bhadra river. This dam is inside the Kudremukh national park. The distance from Kudremukh Entrance is 13 km.
• Kadambi Falls : This fall is one of the major attractions for the tourist who wants to experience the greenery of the western ghats. This is close to the highway and 22 km from Kudremukh Entrance.
• Hanuman Gundi Falls : This fall is located in the Kudremukh National park and 22 km from Kudremukh Entrance.
• Kurinjal Peak : This is another small trek located 20 km away from the Kudremukh Entrance. It is a lesser-known peak in Kudremukh National park. So you can expect less crowd on the trail.

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Kicking off the Kudremukh trek begins at Mullodi village, situated about 15 km from Kalasa.

To get there, you’ll need to first reach the Kudremukh Entrance, about 10 km from Kalasa. You can reach Kalasa by private vehicle or public transportation before heading to the Kudremukh Entrance point.

From the entrance, hire a jeep to take you to Mullodi village, where the forest office is located. Here, you’ll obtain permission to start your trek.

For those coming from Bangalore, multiple routes are available, with the best one being via Hasan.

If you prefer public transport, you can book an overnight bus to Horanadu via Kalasa on the KSRTC website. Disembark at Kalasa bus station, then take a local bus toward Balagal village, asking the conductor to drop you off at the Kudremukh Entrance. The total cost for the bus journey is around Rs 750. At the entrance point, you can hire a jeep to reach the forest office for Rs 200 per person or opt for a 5 km walk if you arrive early.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

Homestays at Mullodi village offer food for trekkers, but make sure to book in advance. They charge around Rs 200 for breakfast and a packed lunch.

In the monsoon season, numerous streams and waterfalls along the trail provide opportunities to refill your water bottle. If you prefer not to drink groundwater, fill up your bottle at the homestay and carry a minimum of 2 liters of water. For added peace of mind, consider bringing water purification tablets or a LifeStraw bottle to purify your water.

Kuduremukha is a mountain range and name of a peak located in Chikkamangaluru district, in Karnataka, India. The name Kuduremukha literally means 'horse-face' (in the Kannada language) and refers to a particularly picturesque view of a side of the mountain that resembles a horse's face. It was also referred to as 'Samseparvata', historically since it was approached from Samse village. Kuduremukh is Karnataka's 3rd highest peak after Mullayangiri and Baba Budangiri. How to reach kudremukh trek.

The Kudremukh trek begins in Mullodi village, about 15 kms from Kalasa. It is difficult to reach Mullodi directly. You must first reach Kudremukh Entrance, which is approximately 10 kms from Kalasa. Hire a jeep from the entrance point to Mullodi village, where you will find the forest office. This is where you must obtain permission and start your journey. One can drive to Kalasa or take public transportation to the Kudremukh Entrance point.

When is the best time for Kudremukha trek?

The best time for Kudremukha trek is between June and February. The Kalasa region, on the other hand, has pleasant weather all year. During the monsoon and winter, you can see many streams, dark shola forest, bamboo trees tall enough to touch the sky, and rolling green hills. Some sections of the trek involve trekking under the open sky. As a result, trekking in the summer is not advised.

Also, trekking in summer can also be banned due to forest fires. So, planning your trek only after checking all the updates is strictly advised. 

Kudremukh is in the Western Ghats and experiences heavy rains from June to September. Hikers get to experience dense clouds, sporadic showers, and leeches. The Kudremukh monsoon trek is well-known among hikers because it provides a unique experience, making it one of the best seasons to travel.

What are some highlights of the Kudremukha hiking?

Kudremukha peak has a unique structure that resembles a horse's face. After an hour of hiking from the forest office, this horse-like structure is visible clearly. This appears to be closer, but it will take another three hours of trekking to get there. 

The Shola forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, lion-tailed macaques, Malabar giant squirrels, leopards, monkeys, and many others. You may also spot different reptiles along the way. If you're lucky, you might come across them while hiking. During the monsoon season, you can find leeches for every step in this section. The waterfalls and small streams are among the most fascinating aspects of this section. On the way to the summit, you must cross several streams. While crossing, your shoes might get wet. So, during monsoon trek it is recommended to carry an extra pair of sandals (preferably rain wear) that you can put on while crossing water streams.

Things to expect on the Kudremukh trek

• Kudremukh is a natural wonder. It’s very hard to find such a stunning landscape anywhere else in the country.
• It is a challenging trek given trekkers have to hike up 10 Km on an inclined terrain and also return the same distance before it gets dark.
• Trekkers have to cross at least 3 different streams to ascend Kudremukh. Get ready to remove your trekking shoes when you cross them.
• The area is blessed with plenty of waterfalls. After a strenuous trek, one can take a dip under one of them the next day.
• Being part of a protected wildlife sanctuary, it is highly restricted by the forest department in order to protect its pristine natural environment. So much that it allows only 50 trekkers per day. More demand and less supply make it even more precious.
• Kudremukh base has dedicated trekkers homestays who provide really basic facilities. Unlike other places (Coorg Tadiandamol, Kodachadri) you cannot get what you want in terms of facilities here. 
• It’s possible you may not get permission to trek on your first attempt. So it’s better to keep a buffer day to give it a second try.
• Whoever cannot get their number for Kudremukha does another trek called Kurinjal peak trek arranged by the forest department as an alternative. Kurinjal also belongs to Kudremukh National Park.

Kudremukh is located in the heart of western ghats at a distance of 330 Km from Bangalore. It is the 3rd tallest peak of Karnataka. It falls under Chikmagalur district which is also home to the highest peak of Karnataka called Mullayanagiri . All the mountain areas in Karnataka are logically named as a region called Malenadu . Kudremukh trek experience

The action begins at the Forest department check post on the outskirts of Mullodi village. You have to present yourself early in the morning. The dedicated trekkers’ homestay would have already served a hot local breakfast along with freshly grounded coffee. They would have given you a lunch packet that is tucked inside your small backpack, preferably a waterproof one. The proximity of the homestay to the check-post will surely help you breeze past others to stand in line. Once we get our permission, there is no stopping us. Kudremukh peak is almost 10 Km from the base. The trek starts with the rich vegetation of the Shola forest which is typical to western ghats. The forest is followed by a patch of grasslands which usually knee heigh. This pattern will repeat many times for the next 3 Km until we reach a certain altitude. We will also cross 3 river streams along our trail. The rocks are slippery and it’s better to remove our shoes before attempting to cross them. One can expect an army of leeches usually either side of the stream as they thrive in the wet environment. If it’s a Kudremukh monsoon trek, it’s going to be wild and wet everywhere. After crisscrossing many iterations of forest and grassland, we will reach a point called Ontimara, translated to “lonely tree”. We can spot the “horse face” of Kudremukh peak close to this spot. The trail turns flat to lead us to the ruins of “Lobo house”. One would wonder how a family used to stay here at the time of no electricity.

From here we have to follow a gradually ascending path climbing uphill after the hill that looks like gigantic steps designed by nature. The fascinating thing with Kudremukh trek is, once we climb up a hill, we can look back to find a clear picture of the hill we just climbed. It’s a linear and inclined trail that makes it possible. This pattern repeats numerous times. After a while we can find a captivating setting of stacks of hills carpeted by thick green grass arranged together. This is the most unique backdrop of Kudremukh that etches in every trekker’s mind. The tranquility of the Kudremukh National Park will make this extremely beautiful cascade of hills even more appealing. With such a clear picture, there is a good chance of finding a bit of wildlife, if you are alert enough to spot it. A series of zig-zag trails will take us to the penultimate hill where we can see Kudremukh peak one final time. A 20-minute steep climb from here will take us right on top of the horse face. On a clear day we will get to see the almost 360-degree view as Kudremukh is the highest peak of its mountain range. Thick clouds hovering around during monsoons may play a spoilsport to bask in the panorama. But then, you can never get that pure greenery in other seasons.

The all-important: Stay

The stay at Kudremukh is very basic. There are about 3 dedicated homestays which cater to trekkers in Mullodi village. They provide gender specific dormitories and common bathrooms. One may find trekkers of different locations and groups in the same stay. The food is basic but edible. They give small foam sheets to sleep at night instead of beds or mattresses. It’s better to carry your own blanket or sleeping bag.

Kudremukh in different seasons

• Monsoons: Being in the heart of western ghats, the months of June to September bring plenty of rains to Kudremukh. Thick clouds, intermittent rains, and leeches constantly accompany trekkers. There will be lots of water in the streams. Monsoon trek to Kudremukh is indeed famous among trekkers as it poses a different kind of experience. This is one of the best times for the raw Kudremukh trekking experience.
• Winter: Months from October to January attract plenty of trekkers. The rains would have reduced and landscapes would have turned slightly brownish. Still there will be plenty of water in the hills because of the amount of rainfall and huge retention capacity of grasslands. The weather is mostly pleasant to climb during the day. Cold evenings and colder nights are the new normal. This is probably the best time for Kudremukh trek if you want uninterrupted panoramic views of rolling hills.
• Summer: February to May offer clear views but the forest department may block the trek to protect it from human-induced forest fires.

• At a height of 1892 meters, Kudremukh is the 3rd highest peak of Karnataka. The 1st being Mullayanagiri and 2nd being Bababudangiri. Incidentally all these peaks belong to Chikmagalur district of Karnataka.
• Kudremukh trek distance is 20 Km up and down. Trekkers usually start early morning around 7 AM and get back by evening 5 PM
• The tremendous amount of rainfall received by this area gives birth to 3 rivers – Tunga, Bhadra, and Netravathi.
• Kudremukh is carpeted by grasslands which have a high water retention capacity. Because of this it looks green most of the year. There used to be active iron ore mining at Kudremukh which was later banned. There is a huge abandoned township today which is called a “ghost town” in the western ghats.
• Kudremukh is part of Kudremukh national park which is home to several animals like Malabar Civet, Leopard, Slot Beer, Giant Flying Squirrels, Sambar, Lion-tailed Macaque.
• The area around Kudremukh is blessed with many streams and waterfalls.
• Kudremukh trek difficulty level is classified as “Moderate to Difficult”. One would need prior trekking experience to do this trek.
• Trekking is restricted to 50 people per day for Kudremukh by the forest department. There is no prior reservation. Every trekker has to appear in person at the check post.
