Lilly Singh Designed the Life and Home of Her Dreams

lilly singh tour

Lather, rinse, get aligned on long-term career goals, repeat. With one simple innovation, Lilly Singh transformed a daily routine into a font of inspiration: “I would like to say I’m the inventor of the Shower Vision Board.”

Since the beginning of 2022, Singh has had her vision board fastened to the outside of her glass shower looking in. “It forces me to see it every… every- ish day,” she jokes. There’s a squeegee nearby, too, so not even steam can get in the way of her ambitions.

A modern-day multi-hyphenate—her credits include actor, author, YouTube creator, TV host, and producer, to name a few—Singh finds her energy being pulled in countless directions, and the board’s placement in the most unavoidable of locations is a constant reminder of her priorities.

Nicole Gerulat

And so far? It’s working. Take, for example, her role in the recently announced Disney+ series, The Muppets Mayhem , where she’ll play the manager to Jim Henson Studios’ revelrous house band, Dr. Teeth And The Electric Mayhem. With a grin, she points out that the top-left corner of her vision board reads, “Disney+.” “I really believe I manifested this!”

This year alone, she also has a voice role in DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys and a spot on the judge’s panel for a new season of Canada’s Got Talent. And in early April, 2022, she released her second book, How to Be a Triangle , the followup to her New York Times bestseller How to Be a Bawse . Sure, she’s busy—but she’s as busy as she wants to be. For the first time in years, Lilly Singh’s doing exactly what she wants.

“At the center of my vision board is ‘optimize everything.’” There was a time when the 33 year-old might have said yes to each opportunity that came her way, but now she’s focused on working smarter, not harder. “I have learned that I love work,” Singh admits.

“But I am better at work when it's not every part of my existence. So I optimize my life, whether that's building a team that's right for me, or making my home life easier.”

Indeed, Singh’s mantra manifests itself in her home. Just north of Hollywood in Studio City, her bright and breezy residence is a respite from all of the noise and traffic. “You know how people feel when they go on vacation, when they get to the resort? That is how I feel coming home.” With a neutral color palette and plenty of windows for natural light to pour in, Singh designed it as a place where all of the day’s distractions could just melt away.

"My first home was color, color, color, color, pink wall this, yellow accent that, etcetera. And, as I've gotten older, I'm like, ‘Ah, yes, this is a lot!’” Since moving in two years ago, Singh has instead focused on filling her home with less, only leaving space for whatever lets her feel “safe, energized, and loved."

Zen as the space may be, it’s still distinctly Lilly Singh. The Toronto, Ontario-born creator first found an audience on YouTube thanks to her high-energy vlogs and comedy videos created under the pseudonym "Superwoman."

That vibrant personality is evident in every room of the house as well. Throughout the home you’ll find pops of color, photos of Singh’s favorite artists—from Aaliyah to Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit—and plenty of portraits of her one and only roommate, Scarbro, a 4 year-old Chi-poo mix named after the Scarborough district of Toronto. With a backyard to play in (supervised, of course—coyotes are a real danger in LA) and a doggie bed in almost every room, Singh laughs that it’s "essentially his house."

There’s an office, too, sunny and adorned with mementos from past accomplishments. Singh’s long been familiar with the concept of “working from home,” dating back to those early days filming and editing YouTube videos in her bedroom, though the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted her personal philosophy. She used to find herself taking work into every space, but now keeps things strictly separate: “My office is for work, the dining table is for eating, the living room is for family time, friend time, and the bedroom is for sleeping. It's not for you to take your work into every space.”

She and Scrabro love to open their doors to friends and family. There’s a home theater, complete with a projector, the kind of seating that dares you to sink in further, and a loaded snack bar. A self-professed “big hoster,” Singh always keeps it stocked to her guests’ tastes, including a rack of every popcorn seasoning imaginable: “I’m not big on spices, but one of my close friends loves them, so that’s for when she comes over.”

She took that same approach to the massive cocktail bar nearby—itself a tribute to her father’s noted collection of alcohol from around the world—so there’s something for everybody. And her "pride and joy," the hit of every get-together, is an eye-catching, geometric ping-pong table, custom built by 11 Ravens (“A table from them had been on my vision board for like four years”), which can also convert into a billiards table, or a regular flat-top for dining. Talk about optimization!

"I grew up in a home—and I’m sure almost every Indian person can relate to this—where my parents had many forbidden rooms,” Singh recalls. "I was always like, ‘This is a huge waste of space!’' She specifically remembers a sparse room staged with a sofa that no one ever sat in unless certain relatives came over.

No disrespect to her mom and dad, but Singh has vowed to leave no space wasted: “Functionality over everything!” During the conversation, Singh decides an infrequently used guest room should be converted to a full-fledged gym since she’d been storing workout equipment in there anyway. When something’s not working for her, she re-evaluates.

“Just because something’s been this way for a while, it doesn’t mean it’s the right way.” At this point, she’s no longer just talking about a guest room. “I would say I’m a disruptor,” Singh declares proudly. “In everything I do—personally, professionally—I like to disrupt things.” That’s evident in the way she used her popular YouTube channel as a launching pad to carve out a multi-faceted entertainment career for herself. The idea of disruption is constantly at the front of her mind when navigating the industry as a queer woman of color. A daughter of Indian immigrants, it’s not often she meets people that look like her calling the shots in Hollywood. So, with every new role, every new opportunity, Singh takes stock of what it could represent—not just for her career, but for the community.

In 2019, NBC announced Singh as the host of a brand new late-night program, a successor to Last Call With Carson Daly that would air weeknights after Late Night With Seth Meyers. A Little Late With Lilly Singh was—in the words of just about every major news outlet—historic. With the gig, Singh became “the first bisexual late-night host,” “the first person of Indian and South Asian descent to helm a late-night show,” and, at the time, “the only woman hosting a late-night show on broadcast TV.” It was a boy’s club, and she had fought her way in and earned her seat at the table.

"I thought, ‘Oh, if I don't do this, it could not go to another South Asian girl in the future, it could just go to someone who's been on a million shows before.’ There was a chance for me to really pave a path.”

Production of the first season of A Little Late was a challenge. Singh remembers time and resources being extremely tight: Over a three-month period at the end of 2019, she and the crew worked long hours to film 96 episodes, which were slated to run through May 2020.

The show was always intended to be topic-based and not necessarily timely, but when the pandemic sent the country into lockdown that spring, A Little Late’s pre-recorded episodes felt out of the loop. Unable to address the news in real-time, seeing herself tell jokes to an unmasked audience, Singh felt like she was watching television from an alternate dimension. “It was really, really tough.”

For its second season, Singh pushed A Little Late to undergo a creative overhaul, leaving the traditional studio set behind to film in a Los Angeles-area home with a small production crew. Not only did it allow the show to comply with COVID safety regulations, it also found Singh more in her element, hewing closer to the casual yet intimate feel of her YouTube channels.

When the show officially wrapped in 2021 she began to write—about her ups, her downs, her tough lessons, and her moments of clarity—which eventually took the shape of her second book, Be A Triangle. The follow-up to her best-seller, How To Be A Bawse: A Guide To Conquering Life , Be A Triangle is a different kind of self-help book: The kind Singh needed to pen in order to help herself.

So why “be a triangle”? Because it’s a shape with a strong foundation. Singh writes: “We need to create a home to return to… I’m not talking about a physical place or somewhere where pants are optional. I’m talking about a set of beliefs we return to after a day full of, well, anything.” As she points out, a firmly planted triangle is difficult to topple over. Through Be A Triangle , Singh found a way to re-invest in herself, reinforcing her foundation of beliefs and priorities so that no traffic jam, no heartbreak, no canceled show, or no bad day can knock her down.

If there’s one thing the pandemic taught her, it’s that one’s physical home can still play a crucial role in that mental foundation. “I did have some dark moments,” Singh confesses. “But I associate them with being safe in my home, being able to express those emotions freely because I was in my safe space.”

With Be A Triangle as her blueprint, her home is as carefully curated as her career, optimized for success. “I take my environment super seriously. I think it’s a big contributor to how you feel, to how you work, to how you laugh, how you love—to all of those things.”

Next, she sets her sights on another section of her vision board: Building a separate office space on the hill in her backyard. “I'm a big believer in the idea that certain spaces are for certain things,” says Singh. She might love what she does, but she’s determined to not let her career take over her life again.

And she’s not going to let the commute to the new office bother her either. “It’s a steep hill, so [I’ll] probably be huffing and puffing,” Singh says with a laugh. “I’d have to just just get into the mindset and be like, ‘I'm going to work and we're doing the thing.’ That's what it is. I want to feel like I'm going to work. I don't want to feel like work is where I am all the time.”

Trust Us, You'll Want to Take a Trip to Unicorn Island

click to play video

As far as inspiring stories go, YouTube sensation Lilly Singh has one for the books. After battling depression as a young adult, she decided to create a YouTube channel as a form of creative release and to connect with others sharing a similar experience. Now, six years later, Singh has nearly 8 million subscribers and plenty of famous fans, like The Rock , following her every move — whether she's rapping, poking fun at everyday life, or simply giving fans an inside look at her day-to-day — and a 30-city world tour under her belt.

And now she's ready for her big-screen debut. In her new film, A Trip to Unicorn Island , Singh gives us an inside look at what really went on behind the curtains of her world tour, between the grueling rehearsals and sit-down interviews with her parents. So if you missed out on her world tour last May or if you just want to relive it all (we don't blame you), take a peek at the trailer above, and keep reading for three reasons we can't wait to see the full-length feature.

1. She gets real

Many fans know that Singh battled depression, and in the film, she talks openly about her struggles, and what Unicorn Island (her metaphorical happy place) means to her. "Unicorn Island is that state I reach when I decide everything's going to be OK, and I'm happy because life is great," Singh says in the trailer. "There's no wrong or there's no right, and no one's arguing over what's real or what's not real. It's just things that make us happy."

2. Yes, her parents are in it

Manjeet and Paramjeet Singh play a big role in Singh's channel, with her often acting them out in hilarious (and exaggerated) skits and scenarios. But in the film, we get a closer look at her family life, along with in-person interviews with Manjeet and Paramjeet themselves.

3. There are plenty of quintessential Singh antics

The film has everything you'd expect from Singh's channel: music, dancing, skits, motivational speeches, and more. Oh, and let's not forget about The Rock.

YouTube Star Lilly Singh (aka Superwoman) on Her New Documentary

By Julia Felsenthal

lilly singh

Lilly Singh, aka Superwoman, aka the 27-year-old Canadian singer, comedian, and YouTuber with nearly 8 million followers and over a billion views, talks exceptionally fast. So fast that when I try to transcribe the interview I did with her over lunch last week, it takes an entire day to get through an hour of recording.

Of course, anyone familiar with her manic YouTube persona already knows that Singh can fit more into the hours of the day than the average human. Every Monday and Thursday, she posts a sharply observed scripted comedy video that she writes, directs, shoots, edits, and stars in, often playing multiple characters in full makeup and costume. (Among her most popular are “How Girls Get Ready” and “Shit Punjabi Mothers Say,” though I’m partial to “How My Mother Stole Christmas,” for which she wrangled Seth Rogan and James Franco to play Santa and an elf.) Every morning she dutifully posts a vlog narrating her day and her emotional status for her mega-fans, who call themselves “Team Super,” though there’s also a subculture of devotees who refer to themselves as “The Lillycorns.” Last year, she did all this while on a two-and-a-half-month, 27-city, 31-show world tour, during which she performed a set that had her rapping, dancing, doing stand-up, and delivering motivational speeches to packed auditoriums of shrieking, weeping, mostly tween-age girls.

“My friends don’t understand,” Singh says when we meet for lunch at an out-of-the-way Austrian restaurant in Tribeca. “They’re like: ‘What do you do for a living?’ ” In person the Toronto-raised, L.A.-based YouTuber is movie-star pretty and nearly as animated as she is in her videos. Like her Internet persona, she has a tendency to refer to herself in the third person. Unlike her Internet persona, she’s traded in Superwoman’s signature tomboyish jeans and tees for a very feminine printed dress and fringed stiletto booties.

“I always feel like I push myself too hard,” Singh says, telling a story about landing in the hospital with severe dehydration and exhaustion during a run of six consecutive shows in India. “But I don’t necessarily think that’s always a bad thing. I think to achieve things you have to push yourself too hard. When I was younger, I had this fairy tale that you can have the eight hours of sleep and be a healthy, balanced person and still achieve your goals. The reality is, that hasn’t always been the case.”

Luckily, all that hard work is totally on brand, as is everything in Singh’s life, it seems. “On an average day, I will spend 90 percent of my waking moments working on Superwoman,” she says. “I’m a huge workaholic. My hobby is Superwoman.” While the videos she posts on her main channel tend to be straight-up humor-driven—Amy Schumer, Melissa McCarthy, and Rebel Wilson are comedic heroes—her overall vibe is far more wholesome and motivational, a synergy that strikes me as uniquely millennial. Hustling to achieve your goals is a major theme of Singh’s vlog channel; of her stage show, titled A Trip to Unicorn Island ; and of the same-name documentary that she released yesterday on YouTube Red, the official reason for our meeting.

“ Unicorn Island is the synonym for my happy place,” she explains. “It’s a really beautiful message: that happiness is one of the hardest things you’ll ever fight for, but it’s the only thing worth fighting for.” The idea derives from her oft-told YouTube origin story: In 2010, Singh, the daughter of Indian immigrants, was getting her bachelor’s in psychology with an eye toward a master’s and a career in counseling. Then she realized how unexcited she was about that path, fell into a deep depression, and emerged only once she discovered YouTube and began to post her own videos, produced in her bedroom with her MacBook webcam. The views rolled in, and she quickly got hooked on the format and on spreading her newfound positivity and good humor, a process that conveniently also bolstered her own mental health.

Like its subject, Singh’s documentary, which follows her through the arduous process of conceiving and implementing her world tour, does double duty. “It’s a story of happiness, of a sad person deciding to be happy and sharing that message with the world,” she explains. “And then for people who have no idea about YouTube, it’s the story of how the hell somebody who makes videos in her room can go on a world tour that gets sold out over and over and over again. How does that make sense?” she asks, laughing. Well, how does it? “Because the world is changing in scary-rapid ways, and I was lucky enough to keep up with it,” she says, then adds, forebodingly: “I think there are a lot of people who were not. I think the film will be eye opening in a lot of ways.”

The world may be changing, but Singh’s movie reflects a funny tension between new media and old. The project is predicated on the notion that the people who adore Singh’s easily digestible, bite-size YouTube videos will be equally interested in an 80-minute, feature-length documentary (albeit one released on the Web). And the tour reflects Singh’s desire to translate her Internet shtick into a more traditional format, in this case, the old-school live variety show. In the future, she tells me, she’d like to do TV, perhaps a sitcom like New Girl .

The film is also about the joy of putting a face to the teeming anonymous masses of her Internet fan base. “In the simplest way, it really brings to light the fact that the Internet works ,” says Singh, a self-proclaimed “geek” about analytics. “Sometimes you’re sitting at home on the computer, and you forget that these numbers and names are actual people until you’re there, you’re speaking to them, and they’re speaking a different language, but somehow you have this connection. It’s crazy if you think about it.”

Crazy indeed. For all her hard work, the insane luck of her career isn’t lost on her. “You know how you have dreams as a kid? I’m experiencing things I never even dreamed of. Going on Fallon ”—which she did a couple weeks ago—“that wasn’t even in my realm of thought.” Later she tells me another story, about being on tour in Dubai and finding 500 roses in her dressing room, sent by an overzealous businessman. “Dubai is crazy!” she remembers. “Dubai is very rich.”

She keeps a vision board above her bed that’s plastered with pictures of her idols, like The Rock and Selena Gomez, both of whom have appeared on her channel; an image of L.A., where she recently moved; and one of the Streamys, where she took home the Best First Person Series award last September. “It’s eerie how many things have come true.”

The bread and butter of Singh’s operation is her comedy channel, based on her keen observations about experiences that are broadly relatable: the convoluted thought process girls go through when texting their boyfriends, say, or what it would look like if men got their period. Where, I ask, in her new Tonight Show –appearing, celebrity-courting, world-touring, kissed-by-a-rose life does she find the time to have the mundane experiences that spawn those videos? “That’s a really good question,” she says. “Sometimes I’m having conversations with my friends, and I feel like they can’t relate to me anymore. I’m like, ‘Oh, my god, let me tell you about my experience on Fallon !’ And they’ll be like, ‘Oh, my god, let me tell you about my trip to the mall!’ It sometimes feels lonely.”

But the ideas are everywhere. As if to prove her point, she picks up her phone. “I just thought of a video, so I’m going to jot it down really quick. When you said, ‘observations,’ I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I really do observe things!’ Like, oh, my god: Do I sit weird?” She flops around a bit on the deep banquette to demonstrate. “I should make a video on how girls sit. I’m always thinking: Is my dress up? Are my legs okay? Am I getting the jean crotch going on?”

She stares at her phone and types but keeps talking, a mile a minute. “I just think it’s a thing, and now I’m going to make a video about it. Am I slouching? There are a lot of things going through my brain right now. I was just sitting on my hair. That’s totally part of the video!”

Lilly Singh

Who Is Lilly Singh?

Lilly Singh has turned her lifelong love of performing into YouTube alchemy. She is known for her kooky, energetic mix of comedy sketches — which regularly feature Punjabi parents (both played by her), raps and skits that gently riff on ethnic and gender stereotypes — as well as her observational/motivational monologues and behind-the-scenes vlogs. All have helped her become a huge hit on the video-sharing platform. Her main channel, IISuperwomanII — a moniker she often adopts online — has had more than 2 billion views and has more than 12 million subscribers; her second channel, SuperwomanVlogs has more than 2.2 million subscribers. In 2019, she began hosting the late-night talk show A Little Late with Lilly Singh .

Lilly Saini Singh was born on September 26, 1988, and raised in Scarborough, Toronto. She and her older sister, Tina — also now a YouTuber — were given a traditional Sikh upbringing by their parents, Malwinder and Sukhwinder, who had emigrated to Canada from the Punjab. Growing up, Singh was an extrovert, who “used to be that annoying kid at parties who would be at the center of a circle to get everyone’s attention,” she revealed in a 2016 interview with AOL. Growing up, she wanted to be a Power Ranger or a rapper, but her parents steered her towards a psychology degree at Toronto’s York University, with a view to becoming a counselor.

YouTube: 'IISuperwomanII' vs. Depression

Singh began posting YouTube videos in 2010, while still a student, as a way of battling depression caused in part by her lack of enthusiasm for a conventional career.

“I was coming out of a really difficult time period and I wanted a way to cheer myself up and also cheer other people up,” she said in an interview with Buzzfeed. “And from a business point of view, when I discovered YouTube, I saw that there were no South Asian females doing it, so I thought it was a great opportunity,” Making other people laugh became her therapy.

Her first video received just 70 views. Success has been gradual. “Every video and every tweet has counted,” she told Marie Claire magazine. “My climb was slow. I took the stairs, not the escalator.”

Being a YouTuber has afforded Singh total control over her output. She brainstorms, scripts, stars in, shoots and edits all her comedy videos herself. As her comic sketches grew in ambition, Singh began to play multiple characters in full make-up and costume. Among her most popular videos are “How Girls Get Ready”, “Shit Punjabi Mothers Say” and “The Difference Between Brown and White Girls.”

After she graduated from York University, Singh’s parents wanted her to study for a masters’ degree — but she persuaded them to let her put her studies on hold for a year to see if she could make a living from YouTube. “So for that year, I just really, really hustled,” Singh told AOL. She made as many videos as possible — and has never looked back; by 2013 she had built a solid fanbase, predominantly teenage girls of South Asian descent living in western countries such as the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. By 2014, she was collaborating with other prolific YouTubers, such as FouseyTube and Connor Franta. The following year, she moved to L.A.

In interviews, she stresses that her success has come at a cost. “When I was younger, I had this fairy tale that you can have eight ours of sleep and be a healthy, balanced, person and still achieve your goals,” she told Vogue . “That hasn’t always been the case. On an average day, I will spend 90% of my waking moments working on Superwoman. I’m a huge workaholic. My hobby is Superwoman.”

In 2015, Singh transformed her YouTube content into a stage act — a mix of singing, rapping, dancing, comedy and motivational speeches, aimed at a teen and pre-teen audience — and embarked on a 31-date world tour, which took her to countries including India, Australia, Dubai, Singapore, the U.K. and U.S. She released her first feature film, A Trip to Unicorn Island — a behind-the-scenes documentary of the tour — on the subscription only YouTube Red channel the following year. Also in 2016, she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and The Today Show . Her first book, How to Be a Bawse: a Guide to Conquering Life , published in March 2017, became a New York Times bestseller. “Bawse” is “like a boss, but so epic I had to change the spelling,” she told Marie Claire magazine. “It’s someone who exudes confidence, turns heads, gets hurt efficiently, communicates effectively and hustles relentlessly.”

Singh ranked No. 1 in the entertainment category of Forbes magazine’s Top Influencers List for 2017. In July that year, she was appointed UNICEF’s Global Goodwill Ambassador. Her #GirlLove social-media initiative aims to end girl-on-girl hate, and has been backed by Michelle Obama .

'A Little Late with Lilly Singh'

In 2019, she began hosting the late-night talk show A Little Late with Lilly Singh . In May 2020, the show was renewed for a second season.

The secrets of Lilly Singh’s success

With her how to be a bawse book tour, which visits dubai this week, the social-media star shares the inspirational story of her rise to fame and the lessons she learnt. it boils down to hard work and determination, she tells us..

Social-media comedy star Lilly Singh is hoping that when she faces an audience in Dubai on Wednesday, there are plenty of grown-ups in the crowd alongside her younger fans.

“I want parents to come,” says the 28-year-old Canadian. “I love when parents come to my show and go back to their kids with my stories of how this journey has taught me to always pick myself up, to never let anything stand in my way, and that hard work is the real secret behind making dreams come true. Parents have no idea what to expect, and then get totally blown away by the message I’m sharing.”

That message, says the YouTube star, is meant to be uplifting. Her first book, How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life , was published in March, and she is in the middle of an international promotional tour, during which she shares what she has learnt about achieving success and happiness. She wants her audience to laugh and to be entertained, but also to leave with something to think about.

“Think of it as a comedic motivational TED talk,” says Singh, who also goes by her YouTube nickname, Superwoman. “It’s meant to make you laugh, inspire you. It’s a show where I interact with the audience and where I get the audience to interact with each other. It’s kind of like my vlog but a little more orchestrated and not all over the place – not as much of a hot mess as I usually am.”

That, really, sums up Singh. She is self-deprecating, quick-witted, talks a mile a minute and is smooth with her humour.

She’s a multifaceted comedian and entertainer who relies heavily on her ethnic background when creating skits and stand-up routines. Her Punjabi, Sikh parents moved to Canada from India, and Singh grew up in Toronto.

She has dabbled in singing, dancing, writing and acting. In 2015, Forbes named her one of the top 10 most highly-paid YouTube stars, making an estimated US$2.5 million a year (Dh9.1 million) from her insanely popular videos. Last year, she was named the highest-paid woman on YouTube, earning $7.5 million.

“Look, all that has been great,” says Singh. “And with the book too, it’s been different and exhausting and wonderful. But I’ve definitely evolved since those early days.”

Singh began making her YouTube videos in 2010, newly graduated from York University with a psychology degree and struggling with an unexpected bout of depression.

“I never thought I’d make a career out of it – I never thought that was possible,” says Singh. “I was making it up as I go along. I started because I was sad and lost and wanted a creative outlet to express my feelings, so I turned to YouTube.”

Respect for successful YouTube stars, says Singh, has increased since those early days, meaning the business deals she has struck have also changed.

“Everything is better now, easier, more favourable and more respectable towards creators,” she says. “Even traditional Hollywood is recognising digital space more and more.”

Singh’s collaborations with international stars is testimony to that. Her videos have documented meetings with Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Jimmy Fallon, Selena Gomez and former first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. When Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson appeared with Singh, he announced the launch of his own YouTube channel.

“Just like everything else on the planet, YouTube and social media are not for everyone,” cautions Singh. “It might seem so easy that anyone can do it – and that’s true to an extent because there’s no monitoring, and you can literally just do it.

“But you have to have passion and a message, not just do it to get rich and famous and make films.”

She likens her experience to having two full-time jobs.

“I can never clock out,” she says. “Social media doesn’t turn off. I have to be consistent, persistent, working very hard. You have to be a self-starter. There’s no boss to tell you what to do and how to do it.”

With more than 11 million subscribers to her channel, and in excess of 1.8 billion views on her YouTube channel Singh seems to have figured out the formula for success.

“I think it’s just that I’m really myself in these videos,” she says. “I honestly am pretty similar to how I am in real life. I don’t censor myself, and not because I think of myself as a role model to younger viewers – this is just how I am.”

She is delighted to be appearing in front of a Dubai audience.

“I honestly love Dubai, it’s one of my favourite places,” she says. “I want to get on that stage and I want to make people think about their lives and about success and about who they want to become and how to get there. I can’t wait to inspire people.”

• Lilly Singh's How to Be a Bawse Book Tour is at the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa Hotel Dubai on Wednesday at 6.30pm. Tickets start at Dh295 (including a copy of the book) from www.dubai.platinumlist.net or 800 Ticket.

Entertainment | ‘taylor-gate:’ swift fans partied outside levi’s stadium — with and without tickets — hours before the bay area’s first eras tour show, thousands descended to santa clara hours before the friday show.

Swifties decked out in friendship bracelets, temporary “13” tattoos (Taylor’s lucky number), sparkly cowboy hats, merch emblazoned with their idol’s likeness — and even a ballgown or two — queued for hours Friday afternoon. Buzzing with excitement, despite the heat and lack of shade, they waited to experience the cultural phenomenon that is on track to become the highest-grossing musical tour of all time, expected to exceed more than $1 billion in revenue.

About 58,000 fans were expected to attend each of the concerts Friday and Saturday, taxing both public transit and freeways.

In the past week, stadium officials and Santa Clara police had warned that tailgating — or Taylor-gating — would not be allowed in the nearby parking lots, disappointing ticketless fans planning to congregate outside to enjoy snippets of the three-hour show, as thousands have done before them at other stops of the Eras Tour.

That hullabaloo didn’t deter local Swifties. Ticketless Bay Area fans mingled, chatted and exchanged friendship bracelets with those waiting to get in, despite the warnings, either willing to risk the trouble to experience the special occasion or taking to heart the urging of Santa Clara City Councilwoman Kathy Watanabe, who argued that the city could not realistically (or legally) enforce a ban along public streets near Levi’s.

Despite the throngs, all seemed calm. Earlier in the day, the Santa Clara PD Twitter account spoofed that officers would be wearing Swiftie Clara patches on their uniforms, and by mid-afternoon, police were busy with traffic control and little else.

Glenn Tsuchiya, a traffic control officer with SCPD, has seen hundreds of other concerts and San Francisco 49ers games at Levi’s Stadium. Reflecting on his six years on the job, he said Friday’s crowd was business as usual.

“We haven’t hit rush hour yet,” Tsuchiya said, “but the mission today is the same: just to keep everyone safe.”

Shortly after 4 p.m., Rebecca Burton was one of the first fans with general admission tickets to make it inside Levi’s Stadium.

The 23-year-old, who traveled three hours from Pismo Beach and was the first one to line up along Tasman Drive at noon, was shocked that she didn’t have to wait longer.

“We thought we were showing up late!” Burton said. “But when we got to this gate, there was no one else here, so we made our own line.”

Christopher Luerra, 12, and 17-year-olds Sophia Garcia and Gracie Quanz made themselves at home on a blanket directly across the street from the stadium, surrounded by trays of beads to make friendship bracelets, one of which said “no bracelets,” mocking the temporary ban on the popular DIY trinket by stadium officials.

While they didn’t secure tickets, they were determined to try their luck after reading online that more might be released by the box office. The three friends from San Jose waited an hour Friday afternoon before they were told nothing was available.

“I’m so disappointed and a little mad, because this is a really good show, and she’s just a great performer,” Luerra said. “But it’s still fun to be together with other fans, and especially being here, we all have something to connect about.”

In a brief moment of hope, Sophia quickly scooped up tickets when more seats briefly opened up on Ticketmaster, but by the time she tried to check out, all she got were “error” messages.

Even that didn’t foil their plans to stay put as long as possible.

“We’ve already seen all the live streams of the other shows,” Sophia said, “so it’s worth it to try and hear some of her songs in person.”

Pacifica residents Tony and Michelle Johnson took in the Taylor Swift concert from the parking lot while their two daughters attended the sold-out show at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Friday, July 28, 2023 (Katie Lauer/Bay Area News Group).

While Tony and Michelle Johnson weren’t able to get tickets for themselves and their two daughters when they first went on sale in November, they won a Ticketmaster lottery less than a month later.

There was one problem: The family of four from Pacifica only secured two tickets.

“I would have loved to see the spectacle, but our daughters are way bigger fans,” Tony Johnson said. “There’s 60,000 seats and a million people that want tickets — it didn’t matter what Ticketmaster tried to do, there was never was never going to be enough.”

Rather than ask their daughters to call an Uber or navigate Caltrain for the first time to meet up after the show, they figured a $300 parking ticket was a worthy investment to avoid hectic crowds.

That decision turned out to be some of the best luck, as they got to enjoy the show from the front row of a parking lot adjacent to Levi’s Stadium.

“We didn’t realize this parking spot was going to be so close and easy,” Michelle Johnson said.

No matter how or why they were there, fans young and old were buzzing with excitement ahead of Friday’s show.

Seats inside Amtrak, Caltrain and VTA trains were chock full of fans gushing about the songs they hoped to hear, while some concertgoers even flew into town for the occasion and received complementary “Fly SJC” bracelets upon arrival.

April, Cydney, Lilly and Bella Crain trekked down from their home in Sacramento on a packed Amtrak train Friday, taking advantage of the last-minute opportunity to refresh their makeup — complete with Swift’s signature bright red lipstick.

Listening to Swift’s music became a bonding experience for the family over the years, as each of them were able to connect with the 33-year-old’s sweeping lyrics as they grew up. While April Crain, 41, estimated that she likely paid nearly $1,000 for the tickets, outfits and beads for the tour’s ever-popular friendship bracelets, she said the opportunity to see Swift with her 20-, 18- and 14-year-old daughters this weekend was priceless.

“Taylor’s Reputation Tour was (Lilly’s) first concert, and it was the first one that we’d ever gone to altogether,” April Crain said. “But as she’s getting ready to leave for San Jose for college, neither of us can listen to her song ‘Never Grow Up’ off the ‘Speak Now’ album right now.”

“It’s our cry song,” Lilly added.

The Rolling Stones Announce ‘Hackney Diamonds’ North American Stadium Tour

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Rolling Stones are hitting stadiums across North America in 2024 to celebrate the release of their new album, Hackney Diamonds . The 16-city tour (which includes a headlining slot at Jazz Fest in New Orleans) kicks off April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, and wraps up July 17 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Ticket sales begin December 1 at 10:00 am.

Hackney Diamonds is the first Rolling Stones album of new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang . Produced by Andrew Watt and featuring guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Lady Gaga, the album was met with near-universal acclaim. “A collection of bangers (old-school division) that nobody in their right mind had a right to expect in 2023,” Rolling Stone ’s David Browne wrote, “Hackney Diamonds isn’t just another new Stones album, but a vibrant and cohesive record — the first Stones album in ages you’ll want to crank more than once before filing away.”

COMMENTS

  1. Lilly Singh Tickets

Rating: 3 out of 5 Lilly Singh was unexpectedly good by Awatchfuldad on 7/20/15 Uptown Theater - Kansas City. I had no idea what to expect when attending the Lilly Singh show with my daughter. I thought she would just be someone who made some You Tube videos trying her hand at standup comedy - the material would not translate, she would have trouble relating to a live audience, etc.
