Scenic Walk On The Rock Of Monaco Overlooking Port De Fontvieille, Monaco

Capital City

Monte Carlo

Good morning

Good evening

"From the fun nights at the Casino de Monte-Carlo to strolls along the luxurious Fontvieille Harbour, the world's second smallest country is definitely worth a visit"

Chris, Travel Director

Visit Cathédrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée

The burial site of the famed Grace Kelly and Prince Rainer III, the magnificent Cathédrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée—also referred to as Saint Nicholas Cathedral of Monaco—sits proudly atop the Rock of Monaco. Take in this symbol of the country’s identity, a famed landmark built using unique white stones from a nearby village that become even brighter in the rain.

Try your luck at Monte Carlo Casino

Rub shoulders with high-rollers at the ritzy Casino Monte-Carlo, Monaco’s place to be and be seen. With many sections open exclusively to high-calibre gamblers, this casino is one of the most exclusive gambling facilities in the world, and the famous film set of the James Bond film, Casino Royale.

Wander around Jardin Exotique

As well as containing over 1,000 species of cacti and succulents, at this three-acre botanical garden, you will find the most magnificent coastal views in the area. Stand atop the landscaped garden and spot the yacht-dotted port, the Rock of Monaco, Monte Carlo casino and even Italy.

Stroll through Monaco Harbour

Perhaps one of the most famous harbors in the world, at Monaco’s Port Hercule you will witness some of the most extravagant water vessels money can buy. Framed by a mountainous backdrop, this natural bay is the postcard of Monte Carlo, attracting all those who visit Monaco.

Watch a race at the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix

Having its very first Formula One Grand Prix in 1929, this highly anticipated annual motor race is running strong in its 90th year. If you're traveling to Monaco in May, you will catch Bugattis and Ferraris zooming through narrow streets while spectators pay no less than 800 euros to soak up the brut of this prestigious automobile race.

Our top 5 things to do in Monaco

Once inside the extravagant walls of the Monte Carlo Casino, it’s hard to drag yourself away. But with the guidance of our expert Local Specialists, with Trafalgar you'll be rewarded with succulent gardens, impressive cathedrals and sunny days by the harbor.

Monaco-Ville

Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

Aptly perched on the waterfront is a planet of marine science, renowned worldwide for its expertise. Evoking an underwater nirvana, the museum-cum-aquarium guides you through more than 6,000 specimens. Setting an international benchmark for ocean awareness and conservation, you will find a new underwater world on the shores of the Mediterranean.

New National Museum of Monaco

Contrary to its old-world Belle Époque exterior, the NMNM showcases contemporary visual art across two locations. Wander the light-soaked halls dotted with abstract sculptures and witness long-standing collections by international photographers. With bi-annual exhibitions dedicated to designers, thinkers and innovators, this museum is a fascinating addition to Monaco travel.

Princess Grace Irish Library

A by-product of a prince’s love for his princess, this 35-year old cultural centre ventures far from the usual tourist tracks. Walk down a side street, ring a bell and be greeted by a wealth of books. Rumored to house almost every Ireland-related book under the sun, the trivial size of the library will quickly be forgotten. Between the covers, you’ll see Monaco in a new light.

Best museums in Monaco

This 200-hectare country epitomizes modernity and glamour more than most countries in Europe. Our trips to Monaco take you beyond the glitz to discover the culture and heritage between the super yachts, the port and the million-dollar cars.

Originating in Monaco, this flaky savory appetizer is a staple food excessively consumed on the country’s national day. A pastry stuffed with Swiss chard and ricotta, this dish has made its way along the French Riviera and across to Italy. But it is best enjoyed here in Monaco.

Found across Mediterranean countries in many different variations, Monaco serves a unique version of this crusty pastry topped with almonds. A practicality transformed into a delicious delicacy, fougasse was traditionally used to check the temperature of a wood-fired oven. Try it once and you'll be hooked.

Pissaladière

A small modified pizza topped with onions, tomatoes and olives, this Monégasque appetizer is said to have originated in Nice. Find it sold at high-end bakeries or daily markets, and see locals snacking on it hot or cold throughout the day. It is the perfect combo of French food with Italian influence.

Best food in Monaco

With Italy and France in such close proximity, Monaco’s food draws upon the best of the Mediterranean diet. Everything we do in Monaco is enjoyed between unforgettable dining experiences.

What to pack for Monaco

People packing for a tour

Both practical and stylish, a sun-hat is the ideal way to feel immersed in the chic Monaco setting whilst staying protected under the hot Mediterranean sun.

Comfortable flats

A comfortable and practical shoe is crucial for a trip to Monaco. The best way to explore this destination is by foot so you can find yourself comfortable as you explore hidden gems and grand sights of this glamorous nation.

Formal wear

Though there is no written dress code for Casino Monte-Carlo, you may feel out of place without the proper attire for an obligatory evening of rolling dice alongside Monaco’s A-list.

A good camera

Whether you’d like to take an HD photograph, film a continuous movement or snap a picture underwater, a good camera is a necessity for capturing your Monaco travel experiences.

Linen dress or shirt

Linen clothing is a perfect complement for the warmer months in Monaco. Effortlessly go from summer days to balmy nights.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

The Monaco tour was great

Stunning French Riviera Tour

Stunning French Riviera

The hotel was in a trendy location and the hotel/airport transfers went well. It would have been nice to have spent more time in Eze and Menton. Also, the tours should have been split up so that the English speaking people were in one group and the French speaking people were in another group instead of combining them so that everything had to be said in both languages. For the most part though a nice vacation.

Simon was a great partner over many months to help us customize our tour. Everything went as planned and on time. The hotels that were selected and the local tour companies that were used for the excursions were all first-rate. We would use this agency again.

Wonderful France (9 Days)

We had a fabulous holiday. Our guide, Bruno was amazing and looked after us very well. He was interesting a fun and kind to all of the patrons. George was also an excellent ???? driver and fun, happy and kind at all times. Our only problem was the Evergreen Laurel. they placed us in a room that was 36 degrees with broken air con. After we consulted the staff they could not shift us. Then as we stayed an extra night and were shifted. We were placed in a room with bed bugs and were bitten. I wouldn't recommend the hotel at all. The La defense was far better. Overall staff were excellent.

Highlights of France (13 Days)

I feel the success of this tour was owed to the tour leader Nicolas Canfin. Some of the hotels were not ideal, deep baths with shower over which for an older age group is not safe Also some facilities lacking. A laundry stop would be useful mid trip as some people are travelling on after the tour. Alll in alll would recommend

As a first-timer to Insight, and to group touring in general, I must say this trip was marvellous. France, of course, is so beautiful. Somehow each day managed to top the previous one. So many breathtaking moments. For me - my job was just to be where my guide, Emmanuelle, told me to be and try not to sleep through the alarm (whoopsie!). I didn’t have to deal with any of the details. What a vacation!! Emmanuelle was simply amazing - knowledgeable, organised, flexible and unendingly patient. I was tremendously impressed by her skill set - quite simply an excellent tour guide. A wonderful holiday - thoroughly recommend.

Explore the Riviera

The 10 best monaco tours (2024).

monaco cassino point of view (1)

Nestled comfortably on the French Riviera and only 30 minutes from Nice , the city-state of Monaco is more than only luxury yachts and Formula 1 – although those are a big part of it!

This sunny destination is also home to some spectacular coastal views, amazing restaurants , and tons of cool events and cultural activities like visiting the Oceanographic Museum or seeing the change of guards at the Prince’s Palace.

But the thing about Monaco is that personally, I have found that to make your visit more interesting it is important to know what to look for and have at least a bit of knowledge about the city’s history and culture.

Because of that, I always recommend booking a tour so you can have someone to give you context, explain the wonderful things you will see, and ensure that don’t miss any of the highlights.

And sure, you can always go alone but having a knowledgeable tour guide will bring everything to life and will make your exploration much more enjoyable. Personally, my view of Monaco changed dramatically after going on this tour .

In this guide, you will find the best tours to take in Monaco.

Don’t have time to read about all the tours on the list?   No worries  — you can’t go wrong with the Private Monaco Motorboat Cruise or the Monaco Private Walking Tour .

Monaco Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Known perhaps as a place where a lot of “one percenters” spend their vacations, Monaco is a tiny principality and more than lives up to the glitzy hype. This independent micro-state along the French coastline is chock full of luxury boutiques, fine dining, and coastline dotted with yachts.

Most people who visit Monaco usually do so on a  Europe tour , making their Monaco visit either a day trip or an overnight trip from Nice, France.

Monaco is an independent micro-state that sits near the French Riviera, and is a popular destination for “one percenters” who like to check out the fine dining, high-end shopping, the casinos, and the yacht-filled coast.

Monaco is also home to the annual Monaco Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world. Monaco is also a popular spot for movie filming. If you’ve seen the movie “Never Say Never Again” (1983), you’ll remember the bike chase through the streets of Monaco along the French Riviera. You can experience those views yourself with a trip to Monaco!

How to get to Monaco

Monaco is just a short ride away from Nice,  France , about 30 minutes by bus. Many travelers choose to fly into Nice. If you’re traveling to Monaco straight from the airport, there is a bus from the airport that takes you to Gare de Nice (The name of the transit stop. Gare is the French word for station). If you’re planning on doing the reverse route, make sure to allow adequate time to catch the bus between the station and Monaco, as buses can be late on occasion. You don’t want to miss your flight due to a late bus!

How to get around Monaco

A question travelers often ask is “should I rent a car and drive to Monaco?” and the answer is, there is no need! Monaco is very small, about 0.78 square miles, so it’s possible to walk the entire country! Between the public transportation and the walkability of Monaco, there is no need to rent a car. Plus, parking is limited, there is loads of traffic, and roads are extremely narrow. It’s better to save the hassle and skip the car.

The public transportation in Monaco is affordable and reliable. With five bus lines, you’re able to get where you’re wanting to go. You can buy individual tickets at the vending machine, or on the bus from the driver. Bus rides within 30 minutes of a validated ticket (make sure to validate your ticket on the ticket validation machine), you can ride for free. If you plan to take more than a few rides in a single day, it’s more economical to get an unlimited day pass. Children under the age of 7 travel free.

Sitting on the coast, parts of Monaco can be pretty steep. Luckily, Monaco has installed several street lifts around the city to make the trek easier. These lifts are also free to use. If you’re trying to get up or down from Old Town to the Casino (a common route), there are lifts towards the end of the Old Port.

One more fun form of transportation around the city, especially if you have young kiddos. There is the Azur Express, a tourist train that starts at the Musée Océanographique de Monaco and takes you around to the tourist highlights of Monaco in about 30 minutes.

For those who are tight on time, such as a day trip, this is an efficient way to check off all the main sights. Monaco also has a hop-on hop-off bus tour, and takes you to all the stops where you can choose where to get on and get off. The entire route takes an hour, but the idea is that you’ll get off at the sights you want to see and explore. Another fun alternative for those who don’t want to walk, or who have young kids.

What to see in Monaco

There’s a variety of things to do depending on your interest, and you can find them listed under our attractions and guide pages. Here's a quick list of things that should not be missed!

1. Monte Carlo Casino

This is probably the most obvious choice, as it’s the most popular attraction in Monaco. Take in the grand décor and all it’s glamor. Make sure you’re dressed appropriately, as there is a dress code, especially at night. This casino has been featured in many movies, including James Bond’s GoldenEye. Fun fact: the citizens of Monaco are forbidden from the Casino’s gaming rooms. Some travelers have mentioned bringing your passport to show your citizenship so you can take home your winnings.

2. Prince’s Palace of Monaco

This is the official home of the Prince of Monaco. While their residence is not open to the public, you can tour the rooms of the palace and the gardens. There are some incredible views of Monaco from the Palace, making it a great place to visit for photographers.

3. Jardin Exotique De Monaco

The main attraction of this garden is the succulent plants that have been brought in from across the world, including the southwestern United States, South America, and Southern Africa. While viewing all the plants, you’re met with awesome views of the Mediterranean and the city, as this garden was built on a Cliffside.

Plants produce flowers for reproductive purposes, but since the plants are brought in from various parts of the world, the “reproduction period” varies throughout the year depending on where the plant originated.

Not to be missed when visiting the Jardin Exotique De Monaco is the observation cave at the bottom of the cliffs. The limestone was dug by the carbonic gas in the water. A visit to the caves is included with the garden ticket. For those fascinated by archeology, check out the Prehistoric Anthropology Museum, right next to the Garden.

Where to shop and dine in Monaco

Monaco is known for its luxury dining and shopping, and even if you’re not looking to spend money, it’s fun to browse through and window shop. The shopping in Monaco is pretty expensive, so be prepared for high price tags. For shopping, check out the Cercle d’Or district. Shops such as Dior, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton line the streets of Monaco.

Dining wise, there are lots of high-end restaurants, including Le Louis XV and Blue Bay. For more casual dining, consider Les Perles de Monte-Carlo for some fresh seafood. Being near the sea, there is plenty of Mediterranean and seafood options in Monaco. Another popular place to grab a bite if La Note Bleue, with live music, on Larvotto beach.

Outdoor Activities in Monaco

Sitting on the coast right off the Mediterranean Sea , it’d be crazy not to spend time soaking in the gorgeous views that Monaco offers. Luckily, there is plenty to do, and many attractions have great views of Monaco. Spending a sunny morning strolling through the Jardins Exotique de Monaco, looking at the plants from around the world.

The gardens are met with coastal views of the sea and the city. If you’re not into succulents, or want to visit numerous gardens, you’re in luck! There are many gardens in Monaco. Check out the Japanese Garden, the Princess Grace Rose Garden, and/or Les Jardins Saint-Martin.

Another idea is to walk along the waterfront and check out all the yachts that are docked by the port. If you go to Monaco Harbor, you’ll be met with views of the cliffs and the really luxurious yachts, including the Prince of Monaco’s main yacht. You’ll also find plenty of shopping and dining while roaming the streets of Monaco. There are plenty of beaches (both natural and artificial) for those who want to relax and feel the breeze.

How Much Time Should I spend in Monaco?

Many people are satisfied with a day trip to Monaco, since it’s not very big geographically. One could walk from one end of Monaco to another in about an hour. For those who like to take it easy, stroll around and lounge around, an overnight trip may be a good option.

Most travelers are satisfied with just a day trip. Accommodations are pretty pricey in Monaco too, so that’s why the day trip is usually the better option, especially for those who are on a budget.

For those who would like to spend a night or more in Monaco, but aren’t looking to pay a fortune, consider staying on the French side of the border. Even if you stay in Nice, you’re only 30 minutes away, so it’s an easy commute and a much more affordable option.

If you’re taking a day trip, it would be a good idea to make a list of what sites you want to see so you can plan strategically. Since Monaco runs along the coast, it would be most efficient and enjoyable to visit attractions in order of location, rather than popping around at each place. Since your time is precious, you don’t want to spend it running back and forth across town (or the country!!).

16 Things To Know Before Going To Monaco

  • Key takeaways:
  • Monaco's lack of personal income tax attracts high-net-worth individuals, making it a haven for the wealthy.
  • Monaco has an excellent public transport system, including buses and a scenic railway, making it easy to navigate.
  • Gambling is a big part of Monaco's allure, with the famous Casino de Monte-Carlo being a must-visit attraction.

Playground to the rich and famous, Monaco is enigmatic to many foreigners and reportedly the world's richest country . Appearing as a sea of casinos, five-star resorts, and expensive yachts, the microstate seems almost like a theme park based on all things opulent and lavish. It certainly seems too extravagant for mere mortals to visit.

Even though a sizeable chunk of the local population is made of millionaires, one doesn’t have to be extremely wealthy or famous to visit Monaco . Anybody can go and have a total ball - they just have to know a few travel tips before you go! Keep reading to find out what they are.

Everything You Should Know About Visiting Monaco

One can never know so much about a place before visiting. Despite its small size, Monaco is a unique place, so this list has been updated to include more things about the microstate.

RELATED: Why La Rochelle On The West Coast Of France Should Be On Everyone's Holiday List No Income Tax

Monaco's most distinctive feature is its lack of personal income tax. This fiscal policy has attracted individuals seeking tax advantages, making it a haven for high-net-worth individuals. Residents of Monaco enjoy the benefits of retaining a more significant portion of their income.

This unique tax status, luxurious lifestyle, and picturesque setting make Monaco an enticing destination for those seeking financial advantages without compromising on quality of life. However, it's important to note that the absence of income tax is just one facet of Monaco's broader tax and financial regulations, which may vary depending on individual circumstances.

  • The average annual income of Monaco's residents is $186,080

Excellent Public Transport

Travelers don't need to worry about spending a lot on taxis when in Monaco, as it has an excellent transport system that is efficient and well-connected. Locals and tourists can rely on buses and a scenic railway.

The buses cover the entire principality, making it easy to navigate the compact city-state. The railway connects Monaco with neighboring French towns, providing picturesque views of the Mediterranean coastline.

The city's small size allows walking between many attractions. While taxis are readily available, well-planned public transport offers a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative.

Yes, You Can Gamble

This is the first thing that everyone wants to know about Monaco. Because gambling is illegal in so many countries, Monaco can seem like a totally different world. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is one of the most famous in the world and is worth visiting even if you don’t want to gamble at all. Remember, this is the very same casino that James Bond often visits!

While it’s not mandatory that you gamble, there will be a lot of wealthy people at this casino who will expect you to either join in or get out of the way.

  • Where to Go: Casino de Monte-Carlo, Casino Café de Paris , Place du Casino

Tipping Is Not Mandatory

In a luxurious destination like Monaco, you would think that tipping would be not only compulsory but at an all-time high rate. But in reality, tipping isn’t mandatory in Monaco. Servers and staff tend to be very relaxed, and in most cases, it will be up to you as to whether or not you would like to leave a tip . Remember that hotel service (and most service charges) will already be included in your final bill.

If one wants to leave a tip for exceptional service, around 10 percent is considered to be appropriate. But there won’t be hard feelings if they don’t!

Stay Away During The Grand Prix

It’s one thing to specifically visit Monaco so you can attend the Grand Prix. But it’s another to unwittingly plan your vacation at the same time as this famous race is on, not realizing that everything is a hundred times more hectic in Monaco during the Grand Prix.

Many of the main streets will be closed off during the race. Not only that, but there will be far bigger crowds to contend with, and the whole place will seem much more confusing. You’re better off visiting outside the month of May when the race normally takes place.

  • Grand Prix 2024: Thu 23 May - Sun 26 May

Be Prepared To Pay A Lot

One of the most important things to know about Monaco is that it’s not the sort of destination you go to if you’re looking to save money. There are plenty of locations around the world that are cheap as chips, but Monaco isn’t one of them . Around 32 percent of the local population are millionaires. Just let that sink in. Monaco is expensive to visit .

Most hotels and restaurants will charge much more than one is probably used to pay, even by European standards. There are free things to do in the country, but in general, one should be prepared for some large bills.

It’s Really Small But Heavily Populated

Before traveling to Monaco, it’s a good idea to become familiar with how big the country actually is: Only two square kilometers. To put it into perspective, there is only one country in the whole world that is smaller than Monaco, and that’s Vatican City which is contained within Rome .

Even though Monaco is super small, it is the world’s most densely populated country, with a total population size of around 37,800. Add on the flocks of tourists, and it can get crowded. Avoid traveling in the summer months and in May during the Grand Prix if you prefer fewer crowds.

  • Monaco population: 36,686

You’ll Be Walking Everywhere

Given that Monaco is such a small country, it should come as no surprise that the most common way to get around is to walk . This isn’t as easy as it sounds since the landscape is quite hilly. But still, other than catching the city bus or a boat, it’s often the only option you’ll have. There are taxis, but they tend to charge incredibly steep prices.

The city bus can be a cost-effective way of getting around that doesn’t challenge your body so much. But if the weather permits, walking will allow people to properly absorb the wonderful surrounding scenery.

Visit During The Warmer Months

Although you might want to stay away between June and August if you don’t like crowds, the warmer months are the best time to visit Monaco. That’s why it’s so popular, then! And with its beaches and resorts, Monaco does tend to be a typical summer vacation. If you travel to Monaco in the winter, be prepared for cold temperatures.

To avoid the cold and crowds, the best option is to visit in early May before the Grand Prix or in September and October, when the weather is still balmy.

There’s A Dress Code

Monaco is in the Mediterranean, so you’ll find that many locals have that relaxed Mediterranean attitude toward life. But at the same time, it’s one of the most prestigious places you can visit. According to Going Somewhere Soon , there is a dress code to abide by. The main thing to remember is that you can’t wear beach clothes around the town, even if you’ve just visited the beach.

Classier establishments will also have specific rules about what one can wear, so it’s always better to check before you go. Generally, make sure you’re not barefoot and are at least wearing a shirt! It's good to remember that other countries also have strict dressing codes .

Understand That Monaco Is Not France

A lot of travelers get confused between Monaco and France. It’s easy to assume that Monaco is just another region of France, considering the close proximity between France and Monaco. There’s also the fact that the majority of people speak French. But if you want to leave the best impression on the locals, don’t make the mistake of saying (out loud) that Monaco is part of France.

Monaco is an entirely separate country. It has its own language (although French is widely spoken), and locals may be a little miffed to hear that you don’t recognize their country as an individual territory.

Bring Your ID With You

As a rule of thumb, bring your identification with you when you’re out and about in Monaco. This can be a driver’s license or a passport. The main reason for this is that different rules apply to locals and foreigners in Monaco. The most well-known is that foreigners are allowed to gamble, but locals aren’t . They aren’t even allowed to set foot in the casinos.

So if travelers can’t produce an ID to show that they’re not a local, they probably won’t be allowed in the casino. And for many people, this is the major highlight of traveling to Monaco!

Monaco On A Budget Isn't Impossible

Admittedly, Monaco isn't the easiest place to be thrifty with money. That said, it's not impossible to go to Monaco on a reasonable budget. Visitors who can look past the grandeur of luxury five-star hotels will find that there are budget hotels and even hostels scattered around the city-state.

Because Monaco is walkable, commuting costs are next to none. Plus, Monaco may have extravagant restaurants that dish out flavors of the rich, but it also has plenty of food markets that serve freshly caught seafood on the cheap every day of the week.

  • Travelers can expect to spend approximately €211 ($221) per day when in Monaco .

Related: Western Europe On A Budget: 10 Tips For Saving Money As A Broke Backpacker

Driving Isn't The Best Idea

Tempted to take your own sports car out for a spin after watching Lamborghinis and Ferraris zip away on the streets of Monaco? Think again! Although luxury sports cars are easily available for rent -- as are other non-sports cars -- driving in Monaco is not as flashy as it may seem.

The small city-state can easily get congested, and its many tunnels and overpasses can make driving in Monaco an extremely tight and anxiety-inducing experience.

Street parking is practically non-existent, so unless you plan to center your Monaco adventures exclusively around places that offer valet parking, driving is probably not the best idea.

There's Much To Do Besides Gamble In The Casinos

Casinos may be the highlight of Monaco, but it's not the only thing that's worth checking out. Monaco is also the land of museums, breezy gardens, and marvelous architecture. The Oceanographic Museum, for example, is over 100 years old and has one of the world's oldest aquariums overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Nearly a fifth of Monaco is occupied by lush gardens and parks. Plus, the cathedrals and chapels of Monaco are proof that opulent architecture isn't just limited to luxury hotels; it's everywhere in Monaco.

Can't Find A Flight To Monaco? That's Because There Is No Airport

Monaco is one of only five countries in the world to not have an airport which makes sense considering how small the city-state is. So how exactly do you get to Monaco, then? The closest airport to Monaco is the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport in France, some thirty-odd kilometers away.

From there, visitors have several options. For those who can afford it, helicopter services regularly run between the Nice airport and Monaco, connecting the two in under 10 minutes. As for the rest of the common folk, trains, buses, boats, and rented cars are the way to go.
