Texas Memorial Stadium Tour - Austin, TX

I recently was in Austin and finally got to go on the stadium tour where the Texas Longhorns play. Definitely worth the small admission fee. The tours are on Mondays and Fridays. You can go to the box office at the stadium (near the gift store) and purchase tickets or buy them online. The tour is about 75 min. long and does have some stairs but they also have elevators if needed. The students are the tour guides and overall I would rate the tour a "10"! The best part of the tour is when they let you get on the field (only to the 5 yard line). They have UT jerseys, helmets and footballs available to put on and have your picture made. We even got to visit one of the suites at the stadium. The trophy room is impressive as well. The only down side was that we were not allowed to visit the weight or locker rooms but that didn't impact the tour negatively. All in all, I would recommend this tour! Families with kids will love this tour.

We went to the stadium for the spring game -- fun since it was free and you could sit anywhere. Food stands, shops and conveniences were open. Great family fun.

Enjoyed the UT and BYU game this weekend, even though UT lost. The stadium is great, the atmosphere is exciting, the fans are devout! My husband is the fan in the family, and I just came along for the ride, but I am glad that I did. The food and beverages are pricey but I think that is expected. We paid $35 for 3 corn dogs, 3 bottled waters and a lemonade. My favorite part was the UT band, very awesome!

I went here for the UT vs BYU game and sat in the north end zone. The stadium staff were very friendly and helpful. The concourses had couch and bench areas to sit. 20 minutes before game time UT Marching Band marches through to great fanfare. It is worth waiting to watch. The jumbo screen is really large and entertaining. I found myself watching many of the plays on it instead of the field. Be prepared for it to be VERY loud at times (we were in Sec. 116). I had been advised to bring ear plugs and I wore them. The benches were too narrow with insufficient leg room. That was a real disappointment. Be advised to bring a pad or stadium seat-back. Also, at least near my seats, concessions were limited. They were selling Australian meat pies, Subway pre-made 6" sandwiches and there was a Starbucks store...no hot dogs, burgers, etc. Also there is no alcohol served. On a very positive note, the UT fans were all cordial and friendly to we visitors...true Texas hospitality.

I have been to other college football games in the Southeast/South Atlantic and the Rocky Mountain Region as well as NFL games at Mile High, Jerry’s World and even the Metrodome in Minneapolis but a Longhorn game at Darrell Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium at the University of Texas is the best football experience I have enjoyed. A very large and great football stadium, good views of the field, greatest fans on earth, tradition, impressive pre-game/ half time/post-game activities and traditions, perfect late September Austin evening, beautiful sunset to the west, and to top it off: a Texas victory over Kansas State. I only lived down in Texas for four years but this venue really stirs up my Texas loyalty. HOOK EM HORNS!!

Memorabilia and UT history can be found inside at the UT Club entrance. UT Club is a private, members only club and is located inside the stadium. Enter from the Robert Dedman side entrance - there is an awning that says "UT Club" and take a walk down memory lane! Located on first floor and free admission.

Experiencing game day in Austin is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that hundreds of thousands seek out each Saturday during the fall. With an athletic director that has prioritized the fan experience and upgraded Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, the Texas Longhorns boast a game day that is arguably the best in college football. From the stadium to the tailgates and everything in between, here are 13 things to know about game day on the Forty Acres.

  • This is the 100th season of DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium

The first game at Texas Memorial Stadium took place on Nov. 8, 1924 when Texas took on Baylor. The new concrete stadium replaced the wooden bleachers at Clark Field.

2. The stadium and field are named after Texas legends

The stadium is named after Hall of Fame coach Darrell K Royal and dedicated to U.S. veterans. In 2020, the field was renamed in honor of Heisman Trophy winners Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams.

3. Home-field advantage in Austin is real

The Longhorns have an all-time record of 394-122-10 as of 2023 with an all-time record at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium of 393-122-10 (.749). This is no small part because of the raucous crowds that enter the gates of the stadium. The stadium capacity is currently over 100,000 and ranks as the seventh-biggest in the country.

4. A series of renovations recently took the stadium to the next level

In 2019, the stadium in Austin underwent a massive renovation. Costing $200 million and taking multiple years, the layout and experience of game day in Austin was upgraded significantly. The south end zone received the biggest upgrades, where the stadium became a true bowl for the first time in its history. Featuring a state-of-the-art Jumbotron and a tunnel shaped like a Longhorn, the south end zone now keeps more sound inside the stadium and brings the video screen closer to fans. Along with these renovations, new turf and burnt orange LED lights were also installed at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.

5. Bevo is featured heavily throughout the game-day experience

2023 University of Texas Spring Football Game

Bevo is the beloved mascot of the Texas Longhorns and featured regularly throughout the game-day experience in Austin. Beginning with the Stadium Stampede, where fans can line up to see him enter the stadium, Bevo is routinely part of the action. After his entrance into the stadium, the most famous live mascot in the country enters the field with the Longhorn band during the pregame festivities. He is stationed in the right hand corner of the south end zone where he fiercely inspires his team.

6. Bevo BLVD is a top-tier tailgating experience

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 21 Oklahoma State at Texas

The biggest tailgate opened to the public, Bevo Boulevard, is named after the big guy and opens hours before kickoff. At Bevo BLVD, fans can find some of the tastiest food and drinks from Central Texas. Bevo BLVD is also the location of the player entrance, a time where fans can greet Longhorn players as they enter into the stadium.

7. Smokey’s Midway is a fun pregame area for both kids and adults

Since 2019, Smokey’s Midway had been a fan favorite, particularly with kids. The stretch outside the north end zone features carnival games, fair foods, and plenty of energy. Smokey’s Midway is named after Smokey the Cannon and also gives fan the ability to visit the Texas Hall of Fame located in the north end zone.

8. The Showband of the Southwest pregame march on the field is a must see

The Longhorn band, colloquially known as the Showband of the Southwest, performs before the game in a must-see for first-time attendees or annual ticket holders. Before the team arrives on the field, the band performs numerous songs, including March Grandioso, The Eyes of Texas, and more. The band is also accompanied by a huge flag of the state of Texas, which is on the field for the national anthem. Lastly, during this performance, Bevo and the team enter the field. As a whole, the pregame atmosphere during the performance is something truly magical.

Texas v Texas Tech

9. Don’t be afraid if you hear Smokey the Cannon being fired

Throughout the game, a 1,200-pound artillery cannon is fired from the south end zone of the stadium to signify important events during the game. Smokey is fired at every Texas kickoff, score, and the end of each quarter. It’s also fired at the end of the singing of The Eyes of Texas. The cannon is a Texas tradition manned by the Texas Cowboys and positioned in the south end zone.

10. Be ready to flash “Hook ‘em Horns”

One of the most iconic signals in the entire world of sports is the “Hook ‘em Horns.” Game day in Austin is not complete without seeing thousands of Longhorn fans flash the gesture. Raising the famous hand signal can be done at any moment, but is routinely done during The Eyes of Texas, before kickoffs, and during any stressful moments.

NCAA Basketball: Big 12 Conference Tournament-Texas Tech v Texas

11. Make sure to look out for “Texas Fight”

One of the more involved traditions during a Longhorn game is the yelling of “Texas Fight” by fans in the stadium. While sometimes led by cheerleaders, it can also be started spontaneously. During this chant, half the stadium will yell “Texas” while the other half responds with “Fight.” This tradition reminds the players to stay focused and that they have the backing of those in burnt orange.

12. Stay in your seat after the third quarter concludes

Heading to the bathroom or concession stand in between quarters may seem like a perfect time given that you won’t be missing any of the action. However, at the end of the third quarter, turn to the Jumbotron for a tradition loved by Longhorn faithful — a video of Austin ending at the UT Tower is played with a voiceover that gives Longhorn fans’ chills and the energy to root for victory during the final quarter.

13. Lighting the tower

After a victory, the UT Tower is lit burnt orange to signal the pride and celebration of being victorious on the gridiron. The lighting of the tower is a wonderful end to any game day in Austin.

Football Traditions

A team with as long and storied a history as The Texas Longhorns was bound to develop unique traditions that rally fans together. Here are just a few of the most famous ones.

The school mascot is a live Texas longhorn steer that remains present for football games and special events. The name “Bevo” comes from the slang term for a steer that is destined to become food.

The university owns a drum that they claim to be the world’s largest drum.

“ The Eyes of Texas”

The school song is traditionally led by the Orange Jackets on the football field. The lyrics are sung to the tune of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”.

Smokey the Cannon

A cannon that is fired on game day at the moment of kickoff and after every Texas score.

The World’s Largest Texas Flag

Texas will run a Texas Flag that is claimed to be the world’s largest before every home game, bowl game, or other sporting event. The flag is also dropped from the President’s Balcony during pep rallies and is owned by the UT Alpha Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Omega.

Lighting the Tower

The main gilding will be lit in orange after various sporting victories. Whenever the Longhorns win the National Championships, windows will be lit in a way so the main building displays a large number “1”.

About Texas Memorial Stadium

With a capacity for 100,119 fans, Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium, serves as the home for The Texas Longhorns football team. The stadium was first opened to the public on November 8, 1924, which was also the date of the first game ever played at the field. To date, the field can be said to provide a home field advantage, as the Longhorns have a 375-117-10 record at the field through November 17, 2018. It currently stands as the eighth largest stadium in the US and the ninth largest stadium in the world.

In 1923, former UT athletics director L. Theo Bellmont, along with 30 student leaders, presented the idea of building a concrete stadium to replace the wooden bleachers of Clark Field to the Board of Regents. The plan was to build “The Largest sports facility of its kind in the Southwest”. Upon its completion, it seated 27,000 persons in what became the lower level of the current stadium’s east and west grandstands. Originally, it was designed to also have a 440-yard track surrounding the field.

The stadium was dedicated in honor of the 198,520 Texans who fought in World War I. It featured a statue representing the figure of democracy that was later placed atop the north end zone seats of the stadium. When World War II claimed the lives of many former players, the stadium was rededicated after it was enlarged on September 18, 1948 prior to the Texas-LSU game.

Later, on November 12, 1977, a small granite monument was unveiled and placed at the base of the statue as part of another rededication. This time the dedication was for the memory of all alumni who fought in as well as those who died during all American wars.

The stadium was then named after legendary football coach Darrel K Royal, who had enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1943. Royal had led Texas to three national championships and eleven Southwest Conference titles.

Attendance record

Despite having a capacity of just over 100,119 fans, Texas Memorial Stadium has a history of capacity breaking matches. These are the top three, most attended Texas Longhorns games.

  • September 15, 2018 #22 USC 103,507 W 37-14
  • November 17, 2018 #18 Iowa State 102,498 W 24-10
  • September 4, 2016 #10 Notre Dame 102,315 W 50-47 (2OT)

Achievements

The team has been around long enough to have played well over 1200 games. And during this long illustrious career, the Longhorns have tallied over 900 wins and have earned an incredible .703 record. This record includes a .561 record in Bowl games (31-24-2). The team has also claimed 4 national titles (1963, 1969, 1970, 2005), earned 5 unclaimed national titles (1914, 1941, 1968, 1977, 1981), and 32 conference titles.

The team has also fielded several standout players and coaches, of whom 2 have been Heisman winners 22 Unanimous All-Americans, and 61 Consensus All-American players. The program has even had 17 players and coaches that have made it into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Along the sidelines on the lowest level of the stadium, seats here are some of the best in the stadium for watching a Texas Longhorns football game.  On the west sideline, fans can find chairback seating in Sections 3-6 (Rows 6 & higher) and will also have some decent areas for overhead coverage and protection from the sun in the back rows of Sections 2-8. West sideline sections are very large with up to 84 numbered rows of seating, and entry tunnels are located near Rows 23 and 58. The east sideline is occupied mostly by Texas student seating (found in sections 25-27). Unlike the west sideline, there is no chairback seating here and fans will not have much protection from the sun during day games. Sections on the east lower level sideline are also very large with up to 80 numbered rows of seating and entry tunnels near Rows 23 and 58.

"Great seats around the 30 yard line"

Great seats. Right in the middle in the action around the 30 yard line. Would sit again. Row was a little wider as it was next to entry.

'Long Road': Steve Sarkisian Reveals His One Goal For Texas Longhorns in 2024

The Texas Longhorns are after only one thing in 2024.

  • Author: Matt Galatzan

In this story:

HOUSTON - The Texas Longhorns are going to be held to a high standard in 2024.

Heading into the new season, Texas is expected to be one of the top teams in the nation, with most preseason projections having them landing in the top five.

However, after elite transfer and recruiting hauls , and a successful spring football camp , Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is placing his goals quite a bit higher than just a top-five ranking.

April 20, 2024; Austin, Texas, USA: Texas Longhorns Head Coach Steve Sarkisian watches the play in

Sara Diggins/USA Today Sports via

"We're going to get back to work in June," Sarkisian told the media at the Houston Touchdown Club on Wednesday. "My goal is that we're playing on January 20th. That's a long road."

January 20th, of course, is the date of the College Football Playoff National Championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and will be the the culmination of the new 12-team playoff format being introduced next season.

In order for the Horns to get there, however, they will first have to navigate their inaugural season in the SEC, which is set to be a major challenge in and of itself with the conference set to be as competitive as ever next season.

"We're going to be just fine. We've got a very good football team," Sarkisian said. "It's finally here. We finally get to go to the SEC."

That move will also inevitably bring a palpable amount of outside noise and distractions to the program's doorstep - something Sarkisian recognizes and is preparing for.

"We definitely recognize it. We're excited about it. It's a great league," Sarkisian said. "At the end of the day, let's acknowledge it like we do and then, what do we need to do? What are we doing today to ensure that we put our best foot forward when the opportunities present themselves?"

The Longhorns will kick off the season on August 31 against Colorado State, before their first big test of the season in Week 2 when they head to Ann Arbor to take on the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines.

"This is an awesome schedule, and one that we're looking forward to," Sarkisian said. "It's going to be a heck of a run."

HIGHLIGHTS:

• The Longhorns' 11 picks ranked second to Michigan (13)

            • Top 5: Michigan (13), TEXAS (11), Alabama (10), Florida State (10), Washington (10)

• Texas was one of only six programs with multiple first-round draft picks this year (Alabama, 3; LSU, 3; Washington, 3; Georgia, 2; Penn State, 2; and TEXAS, 2).

• Texas' 11 picks through the first six rounds of the draft were the most of any program.

• Texas' 11 picks in this yer's NFL Draft are tied for seventh most since the draft went to seven rounds in 1994.

• Texas' 5 picks in the first two rounds were tied with Alabama, Georgia and Washington for the most of any program (five in first 52 picks was the best of any program).

• UT's 11 selections were the most-ever for the Longhorns in a seven-round draft and third-most in any draft (17 in 12 rounds in 1984 and 12 in 12 rounds in 1982). The previous highs for seven rounds of a draft were 10 in 1984 and nine in 1982.

• The Longhorns' four selections in the first 46 picks (and 5 in first 52 selections) are both the most in UT history.

• Texas posted at least five selections in back-to-back drafts for the first time since accomplishing that for three years in a row from 2006-08.

• Texas' two first-round picks were the second-most in UT history, trailing only the three selected in 1980. Texas also had two first-round picks in 1948, 1953, 1991, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

• The Longhorns had first-round picks in back-to-back drafts for the first time since doing that for four years in a row from 2004-07.

• The Longhorns' seven offensive players selected this year were the most-ever in seven rounds of a draft in UT history and trail only the Horns' eight offensive players taken in the 1984 12-round draft.

• Texas has had the top running back drafted (2024 Jonathon Brooks /2023 Bijan Robinson) in back-to-back drafts, joining Alabama (2012 Trent Richardson/2011 Mark Ingram) as the only program to accomplish that.

• With the duo of Jonathon Brooks (1st Round) and Keilan Robinson (5th Round) being selected this year, it marks just the fourth time in UT history of the common draft era that a running back duo was taken in the same draft. It happened in consecutive years for the first time in school history during the common draft era (Bijan Robinson/1st Round/Falcons & Roschon Johnson/4th Round/Bears in 2023). The other two times were (Eric Metcalf/1st Round/Browns & Darron Norris/9th Round/Patriots in 1989) and (Rodney Tate/4th Round/Bengals and A.J. "Jam" Jones/8th Round/Rams in 1982).

• DT Byron Murphy II and WR Xavier Worthy marked the first time Texas had two first-round picks since 2007 (S Michael Griffin & CB Aaron Ross).

• Byron Murphy II was the first Longhorn defensive player selected in the first round since Malcom Brown in 2015 (32nd Pick/Patriots). He was the earliest a Texas defensive player was taken in the draft since Kenny Vaccaro in 2013 (15th Pick/Saints) and the earliest a Longhorn defensive tackle was selected since Kenneth Sims was the first pick overall by the Patriots in 1982.

• Xavier Worthy was the first Longhorn wide receiver taken in the first round since Roy Williams in 2004 (No. 7 Pick/Lions) and just the third Texas WR taken in the first round (Johnny "Lam" Jones/No. 2 Pick/Jets/1980) in the history of the common era draft (since 1967).

• Wide receivers Xavier Worthy (1st Round), Adonai Mitchell (2nd Round) and Jordan Whittington (6th Round) being selected marked the most-ever at that position in a single common era NFL Draft (since 1967) for UT. The Longhorns previously had two WRs taken in 2020, 2004, 1991 & 1987.

• Ja'Tavion Sanders was the first Longhorn tight end drafted in 10 years (Geoff Swaim/7th Round/Cowboys/2015) and the earliest a Texas TE was drafted since Jermichael Finley (3rd Round/Packers/2008).

STEVE SARKISIAN ON TEXAS' HISTORIC 2024 NFL DRAFT CLASS: "What an incredible three days it was following our guys and a historic NFL Draft for our program. I couldn't be more excited for this group and their opportunity as they head into the NFL. The fact that there are 11 NFL draft picks we're talking about who all had a significant impact on our team speaks volumes for where we are as a program. When we came here, as much as we committed to developing these guys as players, we also were focused on developing them as men and wanted to create a culture that can last a long, long time. One thing I always reference about this group, they didn't just buy into our culture, they took this culture and elevated it. These guys were incredible leaders, they were great players, they worked extremely hard, and they bought into the program. And one of the really cool parts is so many of them are great examples of patience and perseverance. I think there's a lot of value in perseverance, and as a coaching staff, we really try to instill that in our players. These guys had faith in the process, earned everything they got and are reaping the benefits. It's a group that put their trust into their coaches, worked extremely hard, and in the end, we're talking about a bunch of guys who we relied on at the most critical moments in games. They played their best when their best was needed, and that's something I'll forever be grateful for."

"Getting 11 guys drafted — the second-most of any school nationally — is huge for our program. I think back to our time here, and in year one, we went 5-7 and had zero players drafted. Year two, we go 8-5 and have five players drafted with Bijan going in the first round. Now coming out of year three where we go 12-2, we're Big 12 Champs and make it to the College Football Playoff, and we have a record number of players drafted. That really speaks to the development in our program and what we do with our players when they arrive and how we work with them, not only on the field, but off the field, to become the best teammates and players they can be. It just reinforces that through team success comes the individual accolades, awards and honors. Being an NFL draft pick is an honor, it's not a right. You earn that, and all these guys have earned this opportunity, and I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with their next endeavors."

"I like this whole group. I'm extremely proud of all of them because I've seen the strides of all these guys have made with the work they put in, their commitment to the team and their personal development, and I'm so proud of who they are as men and how they represent us as a program. I'm so grateful for our staff and all they do, as well, because this is indicative of, one, the type of players we're recruiting now, and two, the development of the players in our program. We're reaping the benefits of that now. We're a better football team in season, and as a result, we're getting more players with an opportunity of fulfilling their dreams of getting drafted in the NFL. But at the end of the day, this was such a cool moment for all 11 of our guys who were drafted. They left their mark in the proud and storied history of Texas Football once again and set one heck of a standard in our program going forward. I couldn't be prouder and can't wait to follow all of them as they take their talents to the NFL."
