CONCERT REVIEW: Beartooth, Motionless In White & Stray From The Path Raise The Roof In Tilburg

motionless in white beartooth tour

After Beartooth’s massive set at Jera on Air last summer, Beartooth are back in Europe to play some of the biggest shows of their careers overseas. The tour included a stop in the massive Wembley Arena , but in The Netherlands it ‘merely’ and humbly sold out the Poppodium 013 with a capacity of 3000 fans.

Beartooth’s tour has been on the books for a while, and luckily the openers have remained even after the rescheduling, which meant we got to enjoy Stray From The Path as opener on this fine evening. The band are known for their political lyrics and hardcore music, a blend they deliver extraordinarily well. With their new album Euthanasia under their belt, there was plenty of new material being played this evening, including the popular III , the third in a series of songs surrounding police brutality. Vocalist Drew York does not shy away from speeching mid-set, highlighting the importance of unity and community. Check some of the photos in the gallery right below.

As direct support, Beartooth brought along Motionless In White . Especially in the States, this band is absolutely massive, and the fact that we got to witness both Beartooth and Motionless In White on the same tour is honestly such a treat. MIW’s music combines various elements of metal, gothic rock, and industrial music to create a unique sound. Motionless In White’s music often explores themes of darkness, horror, and the macabre, drawing inspiration from horror movies and literature, in both their music as well as their appearance. The band released their popular most recent album Scoring The End Of The World in 2022, which was heavily featured on the setlist.

Two songs in, Motionless In White performed the heavy track Slaughterhouse off of the aforementioned album. The studio version of the song features Bryan Garris (vocalist of Knocked Loose ), and the fans tonight were in for a treat when Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo came on stage to perform Garris ‘ part live. Check out some photos from the band’s performance, as well as the surprise guest feature in the gallery below.

Motionless In White:

Motionless In White @ Poppodium 013, Tilburg

I’m a sucker for a great inspirational story so bare with me as I briefly take you back to April of 2014, where I would see Beartooth for the first time, as the opening act for Of Mice & Men in a sweaty 600 capacity room in Amsterdam . Beartooth played songs off of their debut EP, and would release their debut album later that year. Fast forward to 2023, where Beartooth have played absolutely massive venues as headliner and are now taking Motionless In White on tour with them to take on Wembley Arena, and more humble in The Netherlands, the beautiful Poppodium 013 in Tilburg.

At 21:15, the lights went out for the last time, as Beartooth put a huge banner up, blocking the view of the stage from the audience’s perspective. The banner helped to set the tone and atmosphere for the performance and create a memorable experience for the audience. Little did we know, especially after the show at Jera on Air in the summer of 2022, that ‘show’ wise, we would not get much more than that.

Even before the curtain dropped, frontman Caleb Shomo immediately launched into the band’s title track song Below , and the crowd erupted into a frenzy of jumping and headbanging, with a moshpit of epic proportions opening up. Shomo’s powerful vocals echoed through the venues, even if his voice did sound a bit worn out from the packed touring schedule, no doubt.

Beartooth are now 4 albums in, but the setlist catered to the most recent album Below , which released back in 2021. In addition, of course the fan favourites from throughout the years were played, including Beaten In Lips , Hated and the most popular among them: In Between , from the band’s debut album Disgusting . The band sounded great as ever, and Shomo is becoming increasingly comfortable on stage, often chatting with the audience, asking them to participate in sing alongs or open circle pits. It does have to be said that in comparison to the band’s epic Jera on Air performance last summer, the pyro, confetti and fireworks were painfully absent tonight.

Not to worry though, even without the gimmicks, Beartooth are greater than ever with no sign of slowing down. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Beartooth are on the fast track of becoming a festival headliner. With a strong discography and an ever-growing live presence, Beartooth are rapidly becoming a cornerstone of the alternative music scene. Get a glimpse of what the show looked like in the gallery below.

LIVE REVIEW: Beartooth, Motionless In White, Stray From The Path, OVO Arena Wembley, 19/03/2023

motionless in white beartooth tour

In the wake of the devastating events that followed at the o2 Academy in Brixton last year, there has been a backlog ripple effect of gigs being moved to several varying venues across London. Whilst the unique slanting floors of Brixton’s Academy can never be replicated or replaced, desperate times call for desperate measures and after a drought of two years without live music, postponing them is simply not an option. One of the many bands affected is Beartooth and their beastly monster of a tour with fellow Americans Motionless In White and transatlantic four-piece Stray From The Path. Balancing bands between either Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo or Wembley’s OVO Arena, Beartooth were thrown in the deep end, upgrading from an originally sold out 2k cap Brixton to ten times the size 12k cap Wembley Arena. Big boots to fill, but with their brand of hot razor sharp metalcore, Ohio outfit Beartooth descended on Wembley Arena with a riptide of rock and roll audacity, causing complete devastation in their wake.

First up, hardcore favourites Stray From The Path get bodies packing out the floor and opening up brutal mosh pits early doors. Hot off the heels of releasing their ninth studio album Euthanasia last year and with eight efforts in between and only a short support slot of a setlist, Stray made the most out of a short time on Wembley’s stage. From the spitting lyrics Drew York dishes out in Goodnight Alt-Right to the warped hardcore whirs of Fortune Teller and the rebellion against the sick systems of the US with Guillotine to the formidable breakdown centrepiece First World Problem Child, Stray From The Path paved the way for a support hardcore band bringing politically charged lyrics, razors sharp riffs and jaw dropping drums Craig Reynolds beats through to the masses. It’s rare to say you would like to see a support band headlining a venue the enormity of Wembley, but Stray From The Path could easily do it. 10/10

Next up, Pennsylvania’s Motionless In White walk out to the backdrop of their too most recent record release in 2022’s Scoring The End Of The World , an album that saw MIW explore industrial landscapes and digitalised horizons, moving away from their metallic gothic-core for something a little more sonically expansive. Becoming somewhat of a TikTok sensation in recent times, vocalist Chris Motionless and co adored in their blackened wardrobe of black caps, cargos and monochrome makeup, call it their very own Disguise, encapsulate the enormous crowd at this point. Chris’ entrancing and haunting vocals in Another Life and Eternally Yours getting goosebumps raised on people’s skin, to his blood curdling screams in Slaughterhouse and Cyberhex inflicting terror throughout Wembley Arena. Like their fellow support comrades Stray From The Path, on this Beartooth tour, one massive problem kept becoming apparent throughout the evening. Every single band could be equal headliners, the standards were set that damn high. 10/10

Lastly, headliners Beartooth blaze through a Below heavy set that was never short of flames and fire in the literal and sonic sense. Diving headfirst into their monstrous opener Below , the initial instigator for most pits popping up and exploding all over Wembley, Beartooth’s new material keeps coming in thick and fast throughout the night, Devastation, Riptide, Dominate, Skin, The Past Is Dead and set closer The Last Riff all taken from the bands 2021 album dominating but never dimming on the heavy riffs, booming drums and frontman Caleb Shomo’s destroying vocals and fearless attitude to get in amongst his audience, proving Beartooth are a band with no false gimmicks and all rock fuelled authenticity.

The scene has seen Shomo grow up from an innocent adolescent previous project Attack Attack! to establishing himself as one of metal’s most adored vocalists in Beartooth, and tonight’s show saw Shomo’s life flash before twelve thousand people’s eyes. Not missing the opportunity to bring it back to Beartooth’s early days, songs such as the humongous The Lines and In Between taken from Beartooth’s debut album Disgusting , stopping off briefly for Hated from sophomore record Aggressive and lastly the gargantuan Disease, You Never Know and Bad Listener, pulled from their third studio effort Disease .

You can’t help but think playing a room like Wembley in comparison to Brixton’s Academy could be a blessing in disguise for Beartooth, this band clearly born with the back catalogue and metal rock infused bite to rip the faces off tens of thousands and Beartooth did that tonight to unapologetic effect. 10/10

BEARTOOTH Announces July/August 2024 U.S. Tour With CURRENTS, BOUNDARIES And NEVERTEL

Hot on the heels of the fully sold-out 2024 North American leg of "The Surface" tour, which sold a career-record 78,000 tickets across more than 40 shows, gold-selling and billion-streaming Columbus rock band BEARTOOTH — Caleb Shomo , vocals; Zach Huston , guitars; Will Deely , guitars; Oshie Bichar , bass; and Connor Denis , drums — will be hitting the road again this summer.

The next leg kicks off on July 5 in Las Vegas and runs through August 3 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. CURRENTS , BOUNDARIES and NEVERTEL will serve as support.

"We've all been working harder than ever to create the best show we've ever put on and will stop at nothing to make sure it's worth every penny and then some," says Shomo . "We can't wait to get back out and rock with all of you!"

A special BLABBERMOUTH.NET presale will begin on Wednesday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. EDT and end on Thursday, May 9 at 10:00 p.m. local time. When prompted, type in the presale code "BBMBT24" using the ticketing links below to access tickets before the general public. Check back here on Wednesday for ticketing links to individual shows. General on-sale will be Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m. local time.

BEARTOOTH 's fifth studio album, "The Surface" , came out in October 2023 via Red Bull Records . With 160 million streams to date, it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Hard Rock Albums, Luminate Alternative Albums, and Luminate Record Label Independent Current Albums, as well as No. 5 on Billboard 's Top Album Sales. The band has so far earned nominations at this year's Libera Awards for "Best Heavy Record" and the Heavy Music Awards for "Best International Artist".

In other BEARTOOTH news, their latest single, "I Was Alive" , landed at No. 1 on both the Billboard Mainstream Airplay chart and the U.S. Mediabase Active Rock radio chart. It landed on the latter chart for the week of April 27 and has stayed there for two weeks. The single marks the band's second No. 1 in six months, following their previous single, "Might Love Myself" , which was the band's first-ever No. 1 at the format. BEARTOOTH achieving back-to-back, chart-topping singles at radio is a testament to their decade of growth and the power of "The Surface" .

Shomo first turned the pain of his struggle with mental health and self-image into music in 2013.

BEARTOOTH began as a living document, a diary, a journal of repressed rage and depression. Alone in his basement studio, screaming and singing, playing all the instruments, and self-producing a batch of furious but melodic songs filled with reflection and confession, the Ohio native stared into the abyss, initially with no intention of returning to the heavy music world that burned him as a teen. A decade later, the different pieces of his body of work connect in title, sound, and spirit. As the frontman hits 31, BEARTOOTH 's 2023-released fifth album, "The Surface" , completes this era. It kicked off a new chapter filled with surprising optimism and just as honest. Depression is a sick, disgusting, aggressive disease below the surface. Shomo stands ready to bask in the light.

Like NINE INCH NAILS , BEARTOOTH remains a one-person band in the studio. On the heels of the introductory "Sick" EP (2013), "Disgusting" (2014) produced the band's first gold single, "In Between" . "Aggressive" (2016) and "Disease" (2018) expanded on the desperation and pain, each a step closer to a balance between the blood and tears of classic recordings and the shimmer of modernity.

Rolling Stone heralded BEARTOOTH as one of 10 Artists You Need to Know. The rabid response to Shomo 's music demonstrated how many people related to his struggle for self-acceptance. "Below" (2021) topped the Rock and Alternative charts and several Best Rock/Metal Albums Of The Year lists. As of 2024, the BEARTOOTH catalog boasts more than one billion streams across all platforms.

BEARTOOTH began as both bomb and balm, an outright refusal to suffer in silence, weaponizing radio-ready bombast, delivering raw emotion mixed with noise-rock chaos. Other bands play the "devastating riffs and catchy hooks" game, but this music is the difference between life and death, and now, a sort of life after death while still here. The band Forbes sees "inching towards a tipping point of becoming the latest arena headliner" is now one step closer.

Emerging from the rustbelt in Scranton, PA, the group have earned the undying allegiance of a devout worldwide fanbase, one record at a time.

With over a billion cumulative streams and views to date, they have notched up four consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard ‘Top Hard Rock Albums’ chart and ‘Top Rock Albums’ chart with Reincarnate [2014], Graveyard Shift [2017], Disguise [2019], and their latest effort Scoring The End Of the World [2022]. Scoring The End of the World is highlighted by the singles ‘ Masterpiece ‘ which reached #1 on Active Rock radio, the band’s first chart-topper at the format, and ‘ Werewolf’ which reached Top 10 on Active Rock and an impressive one million music video views, a mere four days after its debut.

With guests as diverse as Bryan Garris of Knocked Loose, Caleb Shomo of Beartooth, and revered video game composer Mick Gordon, Scoring The End Of The World finds the group’s vision magnified wider than ever before, with no shortage of teeth, fire, and blood. It has since heralded the start of their biggest chapter yet….

First up was New York-based hardcore punk Stray From The Path and they were really well received for good reason. Their stage presence was phenomenal and the raw aggression came from a genuine place and a sense of injustice in the world, a feeling that punk thrives in.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Stray From the Path are incredibly politically conscious with songs like ‘Goodnight Alt Right’ , a track that staunchly establishes the band’s antiracism / homophobia / transphobia / nazi stances – luckily this track and the left-leaning, pro-human speeches throughout the night were met with thunderous applause.

The band were full of youthful energy and rage throughout and that seemed to rub off on the audience as time went on and there were a number of moments where the audience were psyching themselves up to open up the pit, a theme that would continue for the entire night.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Outside of their based political stances, the music was brimming with energy and aggression and whether or not you agreed with them you could still get lost in the intense drumming and guitar work as vocalist Andrew Dijorio spat lyrical venom with a really solid rap flow.

Next was the band so many people bought a ticket to see, modern Metalcore icons Motionless in White blasted right out the gate with the stomping riffing of ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ and from the first blech; Chris Motionless had absolute control of the crowd. His skills as a vocalist, as impressive as they are, were never the focal point of his image and they never needed to be considering his abilities as a charismatic frontman, he’s able to take an image that could otherwise be considered too edgy and refine it into something that constantly evolves and shifts.

motionless in white beartooth tour

‘Cyberhex’ was next, this was a song I hadn’t heard before and my first thought was how much it sounded like a Doom Eternal song, which is incredibly high praise. The balance of electronica and crushing guitar work along with the slower-paced stomping drum work make this song formidable in a live setting and it goes without saying that the middle of the room became uninhabitable once the breakdown kicked in.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Motionless in White are a band that are full of individual moments that absolutely make a song and it’s no surprise that they’ve become popular out of context, ‘Slaughterhouse’ contained the abrasive “One mutilation under god” led to some unbridled hostility in the centre of the room. Later on Motionless would play ‘Soft’ , a song I didn’t recognise by name but knew as the “YOU’RE MINE MOTHER FUCKER” song, which went harder than many of the older heads in the extreme metal genre, proving that the new school metallers aren’t to be underestimated.

motionless in white beartooth tour

It’s always an amazing experience going into a concert and eventually recognising a song you’d always heard by accident like ‘Another Life’ which I had always assumed was a 36 Crazfists song due to the vocals and mid-2000s Nu Metal style riffing and there was even a cover of ‘Somebody Told Me by The Killers’ which is like catnip for British people. Motionless ended their set with the anthemic ‘Eternally Yours’ which made for the grand sing-along moment everyone had been waiting for.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Considering how many people were here for Motionless in White, I was waiting for a repeat of the I Prevail US tour where a massive chunk of the audience left after the support but the room was still rammed long after Motionless had left.

Even during soundcheck, the drum kick was so intense you could feel it in your stomach and that made people all the more anxious for Beartooth ‘s imminent arrival. They would storm the stage with ‘Below’ and from the first notes, the bass was punishing and even though the sound was a bit messy and hard to make out the higher end, Beartooth’s stage presence was unmatched.

motionless in white beartooth tour

The first few songs were still hard to make out but the mix always shifts throughout the show and by the time ‘Body Bag’ kicked in, the sound was great. The heavier tracks didn’t really rely on melody and the big muddled tone helped add impact and aggression, two things that Beartooth already excelled at.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Many people at the show were younger people and likely haven’t been to a show before and still need to learn how to look after themselves and other people and that’s down to the older crowd to teach them. Listen to your body and be aware of your surroundings, the reason a metal show is so safe is because of the people around you but they can miss things and you can get hurt. Don’t try to hurt people but brace yourself in case you get hurt.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Tracks like ‘Disease’ still had a lot of melody and brighter moments that could be considered lighter but there were still very clear indications that it was Beartooth staying true to their sound. These tracks also for brilliant moments of contrast like the bass rattling of ‘Skin’ and the syncopated hardcore riffing of ‘The Lines’ which also had some blood-curdling screams from vocalist, Caleb Shomo.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Before the encore, Beartooth broke into ‘In Between’ , one of the catchiest songs I’ve ever heard and it has been firmly embedded in my brain from the very first chorus. There were so many people singing along and it always makes for a beautiful moment seeing so many people coming together and bonding over a bright chorus in between angry screamy music.

motionless in white beartooth tour

Many people were not at the show for Beartooth but a massive amount of people left as Beartooth fans and that is the most important part of staying for the headliner after your favourite band has left. You can find amazing new music at these kinds of shows and bands like Beartooth who put on spectacular shows are plentiful if you just stick around for the whole show.
