Primus (originally formed in 1984), is an American rock band - currently made up of Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim Alexander.

Their style of music has been hard to pin point. Claypool said they were in the funk metal genre, but many people have described their music as alternative/ experimental rock and alternative metal.

The duo - Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, originally found it hard to get a drummer when they started out, eventually finding a friend of Claypool's to fill the spot. They went on to rise to stardom in their local music scene with their funk metal fusion.

After members coming and going from the band, the group decided to have a short break in 1989, but shortly after the trio got together and recorded their first album called "Suck On This". This lead to the subsequent release of their album "Frizzle Fry" and a tour with Jane's Addiction.

The group released "Pork Soda", which made number 7 in the Billboard Top 10 in 1993. The album had gone darker than their usual style of music, which included elements of suicide and murder. Following this, the band went on to headline at the Lollapalooza rock festival. Whilst playing their song "My Name Is Mud" the audience actually threw mud at them, which ended with a lot of anger from Claypool.

In 1999 the group released "Antipop", which included many big names such as Meallica, Rage Against the Machine and many more. From that album the group released a music video for the album's single called "Lacquer Head", which was banned from MTV because of references to drugs.

Primus went on to tour up and throughout 2011, including the Bonnaroo festival, shortly after followed by a Europe tour, before embarking on a "major fall tour" to support their new album. And the next year the band went on tour with their first ever 3D-enhanced live musical performance. Each show featured Quad Surround Sound and 3D visuals to make it a different experience for their fans.

Live reviews

Every now and then, you come across a band that genuinely stand alone as a real musical one-off; as a genre, though, metal seems to have more than its fair share. Primus fit pretty neatly into that particular category; their weird blend of heavy instrumentation, funk-driven song structures and progressive, expansive leanings makes them a genuinely intriguing proposition. Not to mention, too, that they do it all with their own quirky sense of humour running through proceedings; classic records by the band bear titles including Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Pork Soda. After an initial split back in 2000 - because “it just wasn’t fun anymore”, according to singer Les Claypool - they reconvened in 2003 and continue to tour to this day, playing shows that are equal parts eccentric silliness and technical proficiency. Their most recent tour of the UK, saw career-spanning sets that included classics like ‘Jerry Was a Race Car Driver’ and ‘Frizzle Fry’ and typically ended with a bombastic, extended rendition of ‘John the Fisherman’. With drummer Tim Alexander returning to the fold late last year after a seventeen-year absence, there’s rumours that Primus may head to the studio later this year, meaning further touring plans shouldn’t be too far around the corner.

They're still killing it. Played a nice variety of their hits, with perhaps a bit more focus on Frizzle Fry than on other albums, just three songs from post-Brown album, including one from their upcoming album. Was stoked to see them play Over the Falls... Les fucked up on Southbound Pachyderm and stopped, then threw in Mr. Knowitall as penance before resuming Southbound Pachyderm to finish out the encore. Hell of a show...

Les was interactive and chatty as always. This was the third time I'd seen them and it was just as good as the first, which was rad. Primus rules and I will see them again whenever I can.

The concert was nice overall - great venue, amazing set list, good interaction with the public. The second half was the Chocolate Factory album, which you may or may not like but was impressive.

Quite disappointing though was the fact that despite a very, VERY cheery audience who called the band for more than 15 minutes, Primus didn't come back from an encore. I was personally very disappointed by this, as it's kind of a tradition in live events - especially which such a loud crowd! It was a sad ending for an otherwise perfect gig.

It was good. Lots of my favorite old songs. On the pork soda album. Also I was impressed with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory psychedelic stuff. And a two parter with an intermission and I got a frizzle fry tee shirt. And I got my girlfriend a purple Charlie tee shirt. 1 thing, the Orpheum is really nice with reserved seating. And we had to stand the whole time to see because everyone else was standing. I like to rock out but I also like to sit down. Great show overall, great musicians

This probably replaced several other shows as my favorite. Claypool's humor and irreverent nature with the audience was fantastic. The band managed to play many of their classics and a few surprises thrown in as well. This being the Chocolate Factory, they eventually centered the show around it and hilarity ensued. With Claypool sauntering on stage as Willy Wonka amidst mushrooms and Oompa Loompas, Primus managed to trip everyone out.

Best concert ever!!! They played for allmost 3 hours. And they played all their old songs. The sound was perfect, the crowd was perfect, overall best night ever. Less claypool and his band rockend the crowd. I like their old hits kuch more than the experimental things less claypool tried the last couple of years. Primus played so good everybody was going out of their minds. Thanks for a great concert Guy's!

What can I say, it was Primus, it was awesome, it was everything you'd expect.

They jammed like no one's business, again what I would have expected even though I've never seen them before.

One good thing is they only played one of the Oompaloompa songs off the last album (which are the only decent songs IMHO).

One bad thing is that they didn't play "My Name is Mud" AT ALL! boooooo.

The atmosphere was really something else, like being on drugs but not really. It was a trip, all right. About midways through the concert they left the stage, and four POPEYE-cartoons played on a monitor for about 20 minutes. Some people got slightly irritated but I liked it. It was a nice break from the music and it really fits with Primus' antics.

Definitely worth going to!

That was an awesome NYE show. Aside from the 60 foot sperm whale hanging overhead, and the fact that the Fox is a gorgeous theater, the second set had Herb Alexander fresh from heart surgery and Tool's Danny Carey doubling up on the drums with an epic 2 kit drum solo. They rang in the new year with a pretty epic Van Halen Hot for Teacher cover.

Primus Shake Up Club On Antipop Tour

primus antipop tour

BOSTON — That a Primus show evokes the cartoonish, over-the-top

quality of professional wrestling is clearly not lost on Les Claypool.

The Primus frontman looked every bit the part of a wrestler claiming

victory Wednesday night as he took the stage at the Avalon Ballroom, bass

guitar strapped across his chest, hands raised overhead, for the second

show of his band's U.S. tour. He accepted the roar of the crowd as his

Wearing a metallic-blue helmet, wrap-around shades, olive-drab pants and

camouflage shirt with cut-off sleeves, Claypool announced, "I don't know

if you know this or not, but we are Primus, and this is a Primus show."

In his dorky, straight-outta-"South Park" voice, Claypool continued, "If

you do not want to be at a Primus show, you are in the wrong place and

you should leave. And now, we are going to do our very best to entertain

The crowd responded with a resounding "Primus Sucks!" — a traditional

chant at the band's shows.

Primus' funked-up, bass-heavy rumblings shook the walls of the club for

nearly two hours in a set packed solidly with new tunes from Antipop

— released a month ago — and spiked with crowd-pleasers from

the trio's back catalog.

Among the Antipop material was the groove-heavy "Electric Uncle

Sam." "Eclectic Electric" ( RealAudio

excerpt), with its clear, ringing guitar intro, was a departure

from Primus' usual unadulterated sludge-rock.

Although Primus' headlining tour was just getting under way, the band has

been on the road for months, playing this summer's Ozzfest and joining

up with labelmates Limp Bizkit for the West Coast portion of the Family

Values tour.

Long road trips are often a two-edged sword. On this night, the band was

cohesive and tight, most of the time. When the energy level ebbed, the

band would kick in with a song such as "My Name Is Mud" ( RealAudio

excerpt), a single from 1993's Pork Soda, and recapture

Images were projected onto a screen behind the band. When the show began,

bubbles percolated upward on the screen (a champagne image to mark the

coming new year, perhaps?) and arc-welding sparks cascaded downward. Later,

images of mechanical animals and insects jerked in robotic, hypnotic

During "Coattails of a Deadman," another new song — recorded with

singer/songwriter Tom Waits — the image of a man in a white tailcoat

drifted ghostlike across the screen.

And during the encore, Claypool donned a pig's-head mask and noted, "That

gets your attention, doesn't it? Putting on the pig's head always does."

Claypool introduced his bandmates, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer

Brian "Brain" Mantia, twice, neither time by their real names. He periodically

did "entertainment value checks," stopping the show to ask fans if they'd

got their money's worth, to which the crowd responded, naturally, "Primus

Claypool abandoned his dorky onstage persona once, to dedicate a song to

"a friend I met on the H.O.R.D.E. tour, who died last summer. He really

liked this song."

The song was "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" ( RealAudio

excerpt), and the friend was Morphine frontman Mark Sandman, who

died in Italy in July, of an apparent heart attack.

“We weren’t even talking for a while. Creatively it was just a mess. I didn’t like the scene we were part of and I wanted away from it all”: Where Primus went in 2000 and how they came back

Les Claypool brought his main band to London ahead of Green Naugahyde’s launch and revealed the tribulations he’d undergone in the 14 years since his previous visit

Les Claypool of Primus

Cali-prog funknuts Primus always endured difficulties as a result of their uniqueness. By the end of the 90s the resulting strain was becoming intolerable and they went on a hiatus that – creatively at least – lasted a decade. Flash forward to 2011, and a rejuvenated Les Claypool told Prog how the band made it back.

It’s been 14 years since Primus last played in London. That’s a long time by any band’s standards but Les Claypool seems perfectly fine with it. After all, this evening the trio is playing a sold out show at Brixton Academy and they’ve completed their eighth studio album, Green Naugahyde , set to be released this autumn. In other words, with new music and a freshly unshackled creative whip, the decade-long hiatus has come to a natural end.

“You’ll get this from anyone you talk to who’s been in a band that broke up,” the bassist says, tucking into another biscuit as we sit in a plush West London hotel. “We weren’t even really talking for a while. We were in different spaces personally and creatively it was just a fucking mess. I really didn’t like the scene that Primus had become a part of and I just wanted away from it all.”

Immediately after the break was announced in 2000, Claypool went out on tour and into the studio with his new project, Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. He didn’t even play any Primus songs for “quite a while,” such was his discontent with the situation. When Primus reunited in 2003 and 2006, they were nostalgic events which fueled no desire to create new music. When they got together again after Claypool had finished an album cycle with his solo band, however, things felt a bit different.

“Talking to Ler [Larry LaLonde, guitar], he was very excited and very much wanted to do a new album. We just definitely weren’t getting the vibe from Tim [Alexander, drums] that anything was going to move forward,” Claypool explains. “We came to the agreement that it just wasn’t working. Again.”

“Jay Lane was the logical person to call – he’d quit Primus one month before we recorded Suck On This , so he’s ingrained on the first couple of records. For me it was almost like, ‘If Jay will do it, I’ll do it.’ So Jay came and played and it was just unbelievable. You could just feel it,” he says, smiling. “I was looking at Ler as we were playing Pudding Time in this little rehearsal space, and we just started laughing. Jayski wrote that drum part.”

It’s interesting that the return of Lane was integral to Claypool’s commitment to Primus, because it’s arguably his drum sound that helped shape the band in the first place. Songs like Pudding Time and Too Many Puppies have his languid mark all over them; and while the band was starting out, that surely influenced the way Claypool played and wrote as well.

“It’s a more groove-oriented record because that’s the way Jay plays. The album does remind me sonically of Frizzle Fry , but there’s a lot of Brown Album on it,” he says. “Lyrically I think there’s a lot more dirt under our fingernails – there are some songs that I just wouldn’t have written in 1990.

I read on Wikipedia that we’re the only band that has our own category on something. I don’t even know what the hell that means

“I wouldn’t have written a song called Jilly’s On Smack because I hadn’t had a friend that disappeared into the world of heroin yet, or Lee Van Cleef , which is a kind of a retrospective song. I’m glad it sounds more like Frizzle Fry than Antipop , or I’d be pissed!”

Claypool initially makes light of his discontent with Primus’ last album before they went on hiatus but it’s clear the work was produced under duress. The forced fragmentation of having eight guest musicians and producers was more likely to be indicative of a band that was pulling in too many directions and struggling to find new, innovative ideas than said act being the idea.

When talking about Antipop in more detail, his brow furrows somewhat. “ Brown Album wasn’t as successful financially as the record label would’ve liked so that was the first time we ever really got pressured about working with a producer. I suggested approaching some of our favourite artists as producers, but to be honest...” Claypool tails off, with a swift shake of his head, thinking of the five producers involved – Tom Morello , Matt Stone from South Park , Tom Waits , Fred Durst and Stewart Copeland .

“ Antipop was just a fucking mess. We were a mess. I don’t even listen to that record because it represents a period for me that was very difficult, but maybe some day I’ll listen to it and go, ‘Hey, that’s kinda cool.’”

Good things did come out of the creation of Antipop , of course. Claypool’s relationship with Copeland spawned one of his many projects, Oysterhead. Primus are the only band among the myriad projects of Claypool’s that the hyper-productive singer has always gone back to. This time, the band seems to have a drive and focus that hasn’t been seen since last time they were in the UK in 1997.

“There’s already talk of us coming back over – we hadn’t talked about us coming here ever,” Claypool says with a wry smile. “In the whole 2000s, I didn’t even leave the States. Whether I was making a movie, writing a book, playing bass or writing lyrics or whatever the hell, the most important thing was to be a good father – I needed to be near to home while my kids were little and coming over here was just such an investment of time.”

Accepting that Primus and their bizarre bass-driven progressive rock is difficult to fit into the categories of your local record shop, how does he feel about the current prog revival that we’re all enjoying at the moment?

“When I was 16, Rush was my favourite band and they’re huge in the States right now – there’s been this huge resurgence. For so many years it was like you didn’t admit that you were a Rush fan because it was like saying you’re a Trekkie, but now it’s kind of chic to say you’re into Rush,” he laughs.

“It’s interesting to see some of the elements of film and pop culture utilising prog stuff that I didn’t even think people knew about, like in Children Of Men when Clive Owen’s pulling into Battersea power station where that rich guy lives; they’re playing In the Court of the Crimson King and it sounds amazing.”

Primus have always been notoriously difficult to pigeonhole, but essentially they’re a prog band. In many ways they’re the ultimate in unclassifiable experimental music – progressive to a fault. “I read something on Wikipedia that we’re the only band that has our own category on something,” Claypool says. “I don’t even know what the hell that means. I look at Wikipedia and it’s all thrash funk, alt funk metal, experimental rock.”

The more chances you took to play your instrument, the more excited they were… I got way more into my instrument and way more confident with my vocals

While their unique style makes for good discussion and has formed a legion of fans over the years, record labels had no idea how to market them. In the big machine of the music industry, they were always the hugely desirable cog that never really fitted anywhere.

“Towards the end of the 90s we were never second-guessed. We wanted to do something, so we did this and this and this and then we started second-guessing ourselves because people were starting to question us – people whom I respected and admired,” Claypool says ruefully.

“All of a sudden we were doing these more testicular festivals, which I didn’t feel comfortable with. When Lollapalooza came along, it was like this glorious thing because it was just like our audience back home: there were guys with dreadlocks with punks over here and a girl with pink hair over here and guys who were into Star Trek over there.

“It wasn’t just a bunch of people in black shirts. There was suddenly a massive scene in the States and it was a wonderful, wonderful thing. I felt like we were getting away from being musicians. When I did Oysterhead, all of a sudden we were playing for people who didn’t give a shit if your hat was on sideways or if your pants were baggy enough.

“They wanted to see you play your instrument; and the more chances you could take to play your instrument, the more excited they were about it. I just thought, ‘Fucking hell, this is amazing.’ I got way more into my instrument and way more confident with my vocals. I didn’t give a shit.”

And it’s still definitely the case. Onstage with Primus, Claypool really lets fly with the extended wig-outs. In terms of onstage improvisation they do it smoothly and comfortably with the bassist taking centre-stage. Can the band’s increased desire and productivity be attributed to this confidence-boost then?

“We never thought we were going to get on the radio or MTV. Once you start getting that stuff, it’s always in the back of your mind and you’re thinking about it,” he explains. “You try not to let it affect you – and we were very good at that – but it does.

“Now I’ve gone back to not giving a shit because I don’t expect to be on the radio or MTV; so we didn’t write any of those songs.” He smiles. “It’s very liberating.”
