Silver Moon Itineraries

Silver moon review, review of silver moon.

The 2020-built/2021-inaugurated MS Silver Moon cruise ship is same-designed as the sisterships Silver Muse (2017) and Silver Dawn (2021). When the shipbuilding order for Silver Moon was placed, Silversea had a fleet of 9 vessels, with a planned expansion up to 12 boats.

The vessel (IMO number 9838618) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000719) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Silversea Cruises is a Monaco -based privately-owned cruise company and top-luxury travel brand. It was established in 1994 as joint venture of V-Ships Monaco (fka Vlasov Group) and Lefebvre Family of Rome Italy . In 2018, RCCL-Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd acquired 2/3rd of the company. Silversea now has a fleet of smaller-sized boutique cruise vessels with passenger capacity between 100-700. The company's business model is to operate yacht-like vessels in the industry's ultra-luxury-all-suite ship category. Silversea's all-inclusive fares include beverages (also selected wines), gratuities (none are allowed), travel insurance, port charges, one or more shore excursions (per voyage).

Silver Moon cruise ship (Silversea)

The 600-passenger ship Silver Moon is an all-suite, top-luxury cruise ship. The shipbuilding contract with Fincantieri was signed on September 11, 2017. The new vessels will be constructed at the Sestri Ponente shipyard ( Genoa Italy ). Among the ship's certificates is "Green Star 3 Design" assigned to vessels specifically designed and equipped with technologies that prevent pollution. Other IMO-issued certificates relate to the vessel's lower noise levels (comfort-noise) - "COMF NOISE A" (for passengers) and "COMF NOISE B" (for the crew).

Decks and Cabins

Silver Moon staterooms (288 total) are all categorized as "suites", and 96% are with step-out balconies. The ship also has the Silversea fleet's biggest number of connecting cabins. Suite sizes range between 390-1970 ft2 (36-183 m2). Silver Suites (increased to a total of 34) are located on the ship's 3 top decks. The new category 2-Bedroom Silver Suite is sized 1120 ft2 (104 m2) including the terrace (130 ft2 / 12 m2).

The boat has 11 decks , of which 8 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins.

Each cabin has a private step-out balcony, walk-in closet, electronic safe box, chest of drawers, marble bathroom (bathtub, separate bathtub/shower, sink/WC area, plush robes and slippers (by Etro), towels, luxury bath products /choice of European top-brand products, Bvlgari by default).

All cabins are completely wireless, with iPod docking stations, hairdryers, alarm clocks, binoculars, umbrellas. Additional amenities in categories Owner, Silver, and Grand suites include 2 hours worldwide complimentary satellite phone use, in-cabin dining (afternoon canapes), private dinner at officers' table. Junior attendants and butlers are assigned to each suite.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Silver Moon offers 8 different dining options, including 3 al-fresco / outdoor. The menu selections are not just creative, but gourmet food art. The Hot Rocks grill menu and La Terrazza dinner robust menu is really stepping in future gourmet cuisine at sea. As for the gratuities - all included in cruise fares, and nothing additional is expected.

Silver Moon Wiki

When the Silversea-Fincantieri shipbuilding order for Silver Moon was signed (September 2017), the Italian company had a total of 78 cruise vessels built in the period 1990-2017 (of which 55 launched between 2002-2017) plus other 31 being designed or under construction.

The vessel's keel-laying ceremony was held on February 14 (Valentine's Day) 2019, at the shipyard in Ancona Italy . The newbuild is the tenth liner in the Silversea fleet. The ship's launch (float out from drydock) was on August 29, 2019. The ceremony was attended by Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio (Silversea's Chairman) and Giovanni Stecconi (Fincantieri-Ancona Shipyard's Director). The ceremony's Godmother was Roberta Bonisiol (Fincantieri employee).

In early-February 2020 was announced the ship's Godmother - Gaia Gaja (Barbaresco Italy-born, one of the owners of GAJA Winery). GAJA Winery is a 5th-generation family business and a large producer of fine wines (Piemonte wines from northwestern Italy's Piedmont region) since 1859. The christening ceremony was scheduled for August 5, 2020, to be held in Trieste Italy .

In the period August 8-20, 2020, the cruise ship successfully carried out the Adriatic Sea trials and was officially delivered on October 30. The Galapagos-based fleetmate Silver Origin joined the fleet on June 3.

On June 18, 2021, Silversea contracted Starboard Cruise Services (1958-founded, Doral Florida-based company specializing in cruise ship shopping services) for Silver Moon's retail shopping program. For the Silversea Moon ship's 3x boutiques, Starboard Cruise Services developed a Luxury Division program with premium-brand jewelry and watches, fashion clothing and accessories, handbags and shoes, cosmetics and fragrances, travel essentials.

Silver Moon was officially christened in Port Piraeus (Athens Greece) on July 28, 2021. The naming ceremony was attended by Richard Fain (shipowner's/Royal Caribbean Group-RCG's CEO), Roberto Martinoli (Silversea's President and CEO), Jason Liberty (RCG's Executive VP), Luigi Matarazzo (Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division's General Manager), Harry Theoharis (Greece's Tourism Minister). The vessel's Master was Captain Chavdar Georgiev (Bulgarian).

Grand Voyage 2022 EUROPE

In late-December 2020, Silversea announced a B2B (back-to-back cruise) connecting Silver Moon ship's "Mediterranean Grand Voyage 2022" and "Northern Europe Grand Voyage 2022". The B2B ("European Grand Voyage") departs from Piraeus-Athens Greece on March 30, 2022, and ends in Stockholm Sweden on June 28.

"Grand Voyage 2022 Mediterranean" itinerary visits 32 ports in 12 countries. "Grand Voyage 2022 Northern Europe" itinerary visits 40 ports in 13 countries. The combined (90-day) itinerary has a total of 72 ports/destinations (in 22 countries), features 7 exclusive events, 8 port overnights and 3 unique (SALT-inspired) dining experiences. S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) is Silversea's new culinary program inaugurated with Silver Moon in 2021.

The program's new 3 recipes are developed by celebrity chefs and represent traditional fare from the Faroe Islands (Denmark), Sicily Island (Italy) and Malaga Spain . In the faroes is offered the traditional roast duck with prunes - a recipe by Teitur Christensen, chef at Futastova and Aarstova restaurants in Torshavn (Streymoy Island) . In SICILY ISLAND (ITALY) is offered Buccellati (figs- and nuts-filled cookies by chef Fabrizia Lanza) during the calls in Giardini Naxos (April 18) and Palermo (April 19). IN MALAGA (SPAIN), during the ship's call on May 3, are offered Malaga-style sardines prepared by chef Alexandra Raij - the owner of 3 Spanish restaurants in NYC New York .

Silver Moon's "European Grand Voyage 2022" also includes a bus travel tour to Benanti Winery (from Giardini-Naxos, Sicily) for exploring the vineyards, a traditional Sicilian lunch and wine sampling (the winery's finest vintages).

Silversea's other planned for 2022 World Cruise was Silver Dawn 's "Grand Voyage 2022 South America" (75-day itinerary) leaving roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida USA) and visiting 45 ports in 22 countries.

What is the line?  Silversea

Name of ship?  Silver Moon

Passenger occupancy? 596

Itinerary? Ft. Lauderdale to Guayaquil, Ecuador

Silver Moon may lack the revolutionary Otium spa on Silver Dawn and soon-to-debut Silver Nova, yet its existing all-inclusive amenities and über-popular S.A.L.T. programs provide top-tier luxury and include the white-gloved butler service for all passengers that makes Silversea a standout among competition.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Silversea is known for its all-inclusive luxury, with all-suite accommodations, tux-clad butlers for all passengers, diversified and mostly complimentary dining venues, complimentary wine and spirits (except the premium list), complimentary caviar service, gratuities and many shore excursions. Door-to-door bookings include economy airfare with discounted business class upgrades, and roundtrip transfers between home and airport and airport to ship. Passengers may only pay extra for spa, boutique and cigar purchases.

Enthusiastic well-traveled cruisers, primarily 55+, sail Silversea. Many are repeat passengers. Some even sail a duplicate itinerary and could care less; they adore the ship and the cruise line. Although the passengers are primarily American, a notable number are from the U.K. and Europe, as well as a sprinkling from other countries. Silver Moon definitely vibes international.

Tell us about the ship in general

The 596-passenger Silver Moon was built in 2020, and is the first Silversea ship to debut the much-heralded S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) programs now  de rigueur on all new Silversea ocean liners. Multi-layered S.A.L.T consists of a complimentary restaurant with an ever-changing menu reflecting the cruise itinerary, bar showcasing regional cocktails and spirits, shore excursions devoted to the cuisine and culture of the destination and a hands-on culinary school spearheaded by a chef instructor teaching local recipes. This well-rounded ship also offers a fitness center, spa, library and multiple lounges. No surprise, the expansive pool and whirlpool deck is a passenger mecca.

Who is onboard?

If seeking an international sophisticated sailing crowd of a certain age, you’ll find your tribe onboard Silver Moon. Count on mostly couples, often traveling with friends and some solo cruisers. Single travelers feel particularly comfortable on Silversea, thanks to near-nightly hosted cocktail parties on all sails, and gentleman hosts on some cruises.

Describe the cabins

I sailed Silver Moon in January 2022, when COVID variation Omicron was topping the headlines, and received an unexpected upgrade to a Grand Suite. About 1,500 square feet including the veranda, this neutral-hued residential abode features a separate bedroom with a king-size bed, living and dining areas and a spacious granite bath with two sinks. Since it’s one of the ship’s largest suites, it includes special amenities such as complimentary La Dame dinner, espresso machine and complimentary laundry. Its location is all the way forward, offering major privacy to occupants. Did I love it? Of course. I got goosebumps every time I walked in the door, overwhelmed at my luck. Silver, Royal and Owner’s Suites are the other largest accommodations with separate bedrooms and more perks.

Veranda Suites are the most numerous, and therefore, most popular category. I’ve stayed in a Veranda Suite on another Silver Moon cruise and find them really comfortable. They begin at 387 square feet including a veranda and sizeable marble bathroom with a separate tub and shower. Bulgari toiletries, plush bathrobe and a pillow menu are among many amenities reminding you of your luxury-travel status.

Tell us about the crew

Silver Moon’s crew is generally a polite, more formal bunch, except for the more relaxed servers at outdoor dining venues. With a large crew-to-passenger ratio, it’s fairly easy to  receive prompt attention. This detail feels particularly important at the Reception and Shore Excursion desks, where so many details of voyaging arise. The ever-smiling staff never makes you feel rushed.

All passengers enjoy butler service, even in entry-level suites. These men and women, primarily from the Philippines and India, are formally dressed and deliver formal service with a smile. This service style seems fitting for a luxe ship; I felt more than a little like a one percenter.

Although you will share a butler with several other suites, you never feel as if they’re rushing handling your requests. When I asked my butler to cancel a shore excursion and decided to dine in last minute, I never felt any annoyance on his part. I love how butlers take the time to set a beautiful table in your suite, spreading out and smoothing wrinkles from a crisp cloth, lining up gleaming silverware just so and setting out a fresh flower vase, for instance.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Foodies will love this ship. Caviar devotees, rejoice: Complimentary Ars Italica Oscietra caviar service is offered anytime, anywhere. Silver Moon also offers 24-hour room service and a “dine-around” menu, where passengers can order plates delivered pretty much anywhere. Only two restaurants, La Dame and Kaiseki, charge dining fees; $60 and $40, respectively. (At lunchtime, Kaiseki is complimentary.)

Dinner reservations are required for La Dame, Kaiseki, Silver Note tapas and jazz club, the Grill for hot rock cook-it-yourself poolside dining and the Italian La Terrazza. La Dame proves the hardest reservations to score; book before sailing as soon as they’re available. With ships now sailing back to pre-pandemic levels, it’s wise to pre-book all dining reservations (spa, too, for that matter). You can always make changes onboard.

S.A.L.T. Kitchen’s menu showcases flavors of the cruise itinerary. Chefs stay tuned to the soul of local dishes – impressive for an ever-changing menu. On my Latin and South America cruise, I could really taste the cumin and achiote marinade permeating charred octopus. A Honduran beef turnover and a cinnamon-y Panamanian bread pudding looked as homey as they tasted – far more authentic than being gussied up for a luxury ship.

Atlantide, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, feels special despite its “main dining room” status. No doubt, in part, due to servers’ diligent attention, the ability to ask the kitchen to personalize dishes and that ingredients like primo beef and lobster lavish the sophisticated menu.

It’s easier to devour the Neapolitan pizza in Spaccanapoli than pronounce the al fresco eatery’s name. Blistery, chewy-crusted pies with bubbling San Marzano tomato sauce are topped with premium ingredients such as 26-month DOP parmigiano Reggiano, porcini mushrooms and mozzarella di bufala.

What’s really cool is that with advance notice, you can order a complimentary Indian extravaganza for service in Atlantide or in-suite. The many Indian cooks onboard ensure an authentic feast laden with aromatic spices. As an obsessive Indian food devotee, I can promise you it will be delicious.

I didn’t dine at Silver Note (the tapas menu isn’t my thing), but I often visited after dinner for excellent jazz and blues, usually a singer and pianist. Arts Café is my other favorite, with its stunning small plates changing throughout the day, from breakfast to after-dinner dessert. They pull a mean espresso here and pour plenty of bubbly.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

At Zagara Beauty Spa, the forerunner to Silversea’s Otium, passengers can indulge in a myriad of treatments. Facials, massages, body wraps and even acupuncture are offered. Men’s and women’s sauna and steam room use are complimentary. My aromatherapy massage was great. The hard part was getting off the table. I also really like the dedicated whirlpool and loungers just outside the spa; post-treatment, this area is a must hangout to continue the chill vibe. Zagara Beauty Salon, adjacent to the spa, delivered the usual manis and pedis plus hairstyling. I had a pretty perfect pedi touchup by a friendly technician.

Activities and entertainment

Activities and entertainment lean low-key. Until nightfall, the biggest lure is the large pool and two whirlpools, with surrounding loungers and a pool bar. I scored satisfying workouts at the Fitness Centre with its free weights and varied Technogym equipment.

Pre-dinner, the best place to meet fellow travelers is Dolce Vita lounge, where bartenders expertly mix martinis and a singer and pianist might perform. Post-dinner, most passengers head to the Venetian Lounge for musical revues by the singers and dancers of The Voices of Silversea, guest artists like comedians or musicians or for feature film viewing. I’m not big on revues, but I did enjoy a guest pianist. Some guests head to the Panorama Lounge either after dinner or after a Venetian Lounge show, for live late-night music. Others frequent the casino, which wasn’t particularly buzzy on my sail.

How was the experience for families?

Silver Moon is typical Silversea; children are rarely seen onboard. If sailing, they lean older and well-behaved. (The minimum age to sail is six months.) Christmas and Easter promise some kid activities run by a youth counselor.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

My cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Guayaquil, Ecuador was long – 16 days – providing the opportunity to dip a toe in many countries. It was quite the cool itinerary, transiting the Panama Canal and visiting Panama City, Roatan, Honduras, Belize City, Belize and Cozumel, Mexico. Silversea did the utmost to deliver safe quality shore excursions despite the pandemic peak. All local tour guides were masked and vaccinated. What a thrill to ride a riverboat along the Belize River, spotting spider monkeys and other wildlife along the way.

A S.A.L.T. excursion exploring the cuisine and culture of the Garifuna on Roatan Island was simply amazing. A historian explained that the Garifuna arrived here centuries ago, and are descended from Carib and Arawak Indians and indentured Nigerians who intermarried on St. Vincent in the Caribbean islands. Closely identified with music and dance, local Garifuna performed for us in colorful costumes. Then we devoured a delicious lunch of fish soup and handmade casaba bread, fried fish and spicy rice and beans, prepared by a noted Garifuna chef.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

I didn’t notice any, but Silver Nova, the first of a new Silversea ship class debuting in April 2023, leans hard into green initiatives with advanced hybrid technology utilizing fuel cells and promise zero port emissions.

Anything we missed

Perhaps the most memorable moments of my cruise came in those quiet moments reflecting on my joy of voyaging once again despite the pandemic’s latest surge. The eager-to-please crew seemed so grateful to be working. Their happiness mingled with mine until we all seemed to experience this harmonious high at once. I’m not sure who felt like they were floating higher in the clouds, the crew or me.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

Silver Moon provides an excellent foray into luxury cruising, including superb cuisine and crew pampering, and compelling itineraries exploring the world.

Silversea Silver Moon Cruise Ship Review

 Silversea Cruises

Silver Moon

 by David Swanson

Dedicated to the upscale traveler, or for cruisers looking to splurge, Silversea’s newest and most elegant cruise ship Silver Moon lays on the creature comforts in grand style.  There are just a few add-ons you’ll ring up a bill for — two dining options and top-flight cognacs and whiskies — but otherwise the all-inclusive package features not just all drinks, butler service and included WiFi, but such niceties as Ossetra caviar, hands-on cooking sessions, and a bottle of Laurent-Perrier Cuvee Rosé Champagne deposited in every suite.

Compared to my last experience aboard Silver Spirit a decade ago, Silversea has matured favorably.  Gone are the heavy, outdated Italian stylings and stuffy ministrations.  In their place I found luxe quarters in tune with today’s design trends, upbeat service from an attentive crew, and a soothing ambience has blossomed.  And while Silversea’s dining was always above-average, the line’s new S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, which debuted on Silver Moon, takes it to a new level, coming into play in a restaurant and unusual bar, cooking classes and lectures, and even into shore excursions at many ports.

Porthole Cruise and Travel Ship Rating: 4.7 out of 5

The subdued Atlantide, what would typically be classified as the Main Dining Room, serves breakfast and dinner daily, plus lunch on sea days.  There are no set dining times, and reservations are unnecessary.  The surprisingly broad menu features about 10 different starters at dinner, plus soups and salads, and about 10 entrées ranging from poached Greenland cod and pan-fried Mediterranean seabream to New Zealand lamb and Argentinean beef.  Several vegetarian selections are available nightly.

Next door is S.A.L.T. Kitchen, which offers cuisine of the region Silver Moon is sailing.  One half of the menu — called Voyage — remains through the itinerary.  On my Central America sailing this included such fare as quinoa salad, pastelitos of Honduras and a Peruvian-style duck breast.  The daily-changing Terrain Menu represents the food of the specific port of the day, even to the point of offering a selection of Cuban entrées on the sea day as we sailed past Havana.  For the incurious, the focus on food culture may feel overbearing, but I found discovering destinations via the kitchen both ambitious and satisfying.  Also of note: the S.A.L.T. Bar, where a bespoke cocktail menu is curated specifically for each voyage, using exotic liquors and ingredients tied to the destination, a mixologist’s dream assignment.  Downside: The venue seats only 15 or so comfortably, and it’s located at the entrance to the ship’s two main restaurants, and therefore crowded from the moment doors open at 6 p.m.

La Terrazza operates as Silver Moon’s buffet option for breakfast and lunch, with a breezy outdoor terrace on Deck 7 aft.  Eggs, pancakes and sides can be ordered from waiters, or retrieved on your own; I loved the selection of fruits and veggies for custom smoothies.  For lunch, a themed menu takes over, and at dinner, La Terrazza shifts into a la carte mode, with a menu of house-made pasta dishes that can be ordered as appetizer or main course, along with meats and fish in Mediterranean presentations.

On the pool deck, the Grill is the ship’s most casual option, serving lunch fare such as sandwiches, burgers, and salads, while at night, this space transitions to Hot Rocks, where diners can grill their own meat or seafood over sizzling volcanic stones (bibs on request), or leave it to the chefs to cook at the grill.  It’s a great outdoor setting, but as I found on Silver Spirit a decade ago, the meats are not quite up to par for steak aficionados.  Silver Note is another Silversea specialty, a jazz club offering a lighter, tapas-style menu, accompanied by pianist and singer starting at 8 p.m.

Two other dinner options carry a surcharge.  Kaiseki ($40) features an Asian menu and such fare as Wagyu beef and king crab tempura.  The intimate, windowless setting of Kaiseki is a nice change of pace, but I preferred the food at lunch, when a roster of quality sushi was on offer (with no add-on).  La Dame is Silver Moon’s French gourmet experience ($60), with foie gras, soups poured tableside, buttery Chilean sea bass, and soufflé for desert.  It’s a special evening.  With their limited seating, Kaiseki and La Dame were the only restaurants where reservations were encouraged.

For lighter meals, Spaccanapoli serves mouth-watering Naples-style pizzas al fresco for lunch and dinner, and the Arts Café has light snacks through the day — yogurt parfaits, pastries, and finger sandwiches, along with the full line of caffeinated options.  Located on Deck 8, the café’s aft terrace is a quiet place to hang while at sea.

Silversea also features 24-hour “all around dining,” which provides a robust menu that can be served in-room, or within any of the ship’s public areas.  Go ahead: Spoil yourself with an order of caviar for your cabin.

With its generous passenger-space ratio, Silver Moon lays on what may be, for many of us right now, the greatest luxury: breathing room.  The Zagara Spa includes a range of expected treatments along with a salon and fitness center stocked with cardio equipment, weights.  The pool deck is endowed with a large and deep swimming pool (long enough for laps), and ample loungers.  In addition to pool towels there are light blankets available for any post-swim chills.  Above, a running course is good for a short circuit.  There are two whirlpools on Deck 10 next to the pool and a “secret” one aft; a larger, shaded whirlpool is also found on Deck 6 aft, next to the fitness room.

The most unique feature on Silver Moon is, again, one keyed to its culinary program.  The S.A.L.T. Lab offers hands-on, fast-paced cooking lessons once or twice a day in a made-to-order kitchen-in-the-round.  The lessons focus on the cuisine of the region you are sailing, and reservations are necessary.

Immediately next door to the Panorama Lounge is a Silversea standard, the Connoisseur’s Corner, an indoor-outdoor cigar lounge stocked with Davidoff and Cohiba stogies and premium cognacs.  A small casino snuggles up next to Silver Note.

While children are allowed to sail with Silversea there is no dedicated kids area or assigned staff to supervise when parents want to do their own thing.

Cabins are located on all of Silver Moon’s public decks, in the center and forward sections of the ship (on all decks the aft third is dedicated to dining and other services).  Veranda Suites make up more than 80 percent of the ship’s compliment of accommodations.  Measuring 323 square feet (plus balcony), they are among the most generously sized “standard” cabins at sea.  Throughout, the suites feature a marble bathroom with bathtub and separate shower, walk-in wardrobe with storage sufficient for long journeys and lots of smaller shelves, table that can be configured for in-room dining, ample outlets for charging, and balcony.  A dozen similarly-sized oceanview suites are available (no balcony) and three of them are configured for accessibility.  Butler service, Bulgari bath amenities and a stocked minibar are found throughout.

The 34 Silver Suites are the next category up, and are wider, measuring 657 square feet, so double the size of Veranda Suites.  The living area has a sofa that can be converted to a bed for a third guest, and there’s a dedicated dining area.  Other features here (and in higher categories) include Illy espresso machines, Bose sound system with Bluetooth connectivity, complimentary laundry, and daily canape service.  Silver Suites, along with the larger Royal, Grand and Owner’s suites, can all be connected with a standard suite to create a two-bedroom unit.

Silversea does not cater to the party hearty crowd, so don’t look for the hairy chest contest poolside.  Actually, while I appreciated that canned music was kept to a minimum, the dearth of live music around the pool deck, where many congregate for lunch and a tan, was disappointing (perhaps a side effect of pandemic protocols?).  Otherwise, live music was offered only after 6 p.m. and this ranged from guitar and piano soloists, to a band that performed pop hits, to a jazz duo that performed nightly at Silver Note.

The Venetian Lounge is Silver Moon’s theatre, and the Voices of Silversea perform several times per cruise, with individual shows dedicated to opera, crossover tunes, or focused on a genre like 60s British pop.  Individual musical acts are brought on board (a trumpet soloist and pianist on my cruise)

In addition to the Lab, the S.A.L.T. program includes culinary demonstrations held in the Venetian Lounge, and guest lecturers on an array of subjects also do their thing here.

All-you-can-eat caviar and a test kitchen: This new luxury cruise ship delivers for foodies

Melanie Lieberman

There are few experiences as singularly luxurious as eating caviar in bed. Or returning to your suite to find your butler has cleaned your sunglasses, untangled your charging chords and drawn a post-massage bath. There are far worse ways to spend a vacation.

On Silversea's new Silver Moon, which was completed in October of 2020 but sat unused until this June due to the coronavirus pandemic, travelers can expect this type of timeless luxury. At the French restaurant La Dame, for example, Dover sole is filleted tableside. All guests have access to a butler, and there are live orchids in the suites and fresh flowers at every turn.

silversea cruise silver moon

But the vessel itself has eschewed the dark, polished woods and crystal chandeliers found on many luxury lines in favor of bright, neutral hues and light wood and marble. As a guest of Silversea on a recent sailing that hosted both members of the media as well as paid passengers, I had a chance to check out one of the industry's most anticipated new ships .

Here's what I discovered during a recent 10-day sailing around Greece and Cyprus on board Silver Moon.

What's new

silversea cruise silver moon

For cruisers familiar with Silver Moon's sister ships Silver Muse and the recently refurbished Silver Spirit, the vessel will feel very familiar.

With a capacity of just 596 passengers and 411 crew members, the guest-to-crew ratio is roughly 1.45 to 1 when the ship is at full capacity. And while I was sailing with Silversea, the number of guests was roughly half.

During a Q&A following a naming ceremony on the first day of the sailing, Silversea Cruises' CEO and president Roberto Martinoli described the key differences guests might notice between Silver Moon and Silver Muse.

The aforementioned restaurant La Dame has moved upstairs. It now has ocean views and can seat more than twice the number of guests.

silversea cruise silver moon

The Arts Café has moved, as has the Connoisseur's Corner which now has a lovely outdoor area even non-smokers may want to take advantage of. The fitness center and spa have been enlarged, too, as have other dining venues.

And of course, Martinoli said, "we've been perfecting some other things." Guests might notice some of the decks have more free height, for example.

But the biggest change, Martinoli emphasized, comes in the form of SALT (Sea and Land Taste), a culinary program that might just lure diehard epicures to cruising for the first time — and edged out the teppanyaki space on Silver Muse.

silversea cruise silver moon

Travelers can expect a trifecta of SALT programming including talks and demonstrations; specialized SALT Ashore excursions that might include a wine tasting at a vineyard, an organic farm tour, or a cheese-making class followed by a veritable feast at a local restaurant; and onboard cooking classes.

silversea cruise silver moon

At a gleaming new test kitchen, the SALT Lab, passengers try their hand at preparing regional recipes. While the ship was docked at the island of Crete, for example, I learned to prepare gamopilafo, a traditional wedding rice dish with both Venetian and Ottoman influences.

silversea cruise silver moon

In addition to the new Lab, guests can dine at SALT Kitchen (billed as the first large-scale regional restaurant on a luxury cruise ship) with a menu that changes daily to reflect the port of call. After dinner, guests can order whimsical cocktails at the SALT Bar. (Order the Selene, and start filming when the drink arrives; just trust me on this, OK?)

Entertainment and activities

silversea cruise silver moon

In addition to the SALT programming, guests will have access to a lineup of entertainment and activities similar to what you'd find on other Silversea vessels. There are no roller coasters, waterslides or Broadway-style theater productions.

While Silver Moon plied the Aegean and Mediterranean seas at night, guests could be found at the casino or enjoying live music at a number of the ship's bars and lounges, including live jazz and blues at Silver Note (which also serves small, shareable plates featuring fusion-style fare).

silversea cruise silver moon

At the Venetian Lounge theater, the Voices of Silversea performed a medley of classic show tunes; there was a Queen tribute show; and Dain Cordean performed magic.

Silversea may not be the cruise line of choice for travelers seeking high-adrenaline thrills, but there's more than enough entertainment to keep you occupied after a lengthy multicourse dinner or a busy day at port.

After a full day at Cyprus, my friend and I went to the pool deck for Simply Divine, a performance of iconic duets which turned into line dancing and, after most of the guests had dispersed, a bit of a dance party with DJ Gabor who pulled out hits by Bruno Mars, Britney Spears and The Killers. Seriously.

silversea cruise silver moon

Silver Moon also has a deck-top pool and a handful of hot tubs, plus the Zagara spa, salon and fitness center for travelers who prefer relaxing over the cha-cha slide.

Cabins and suites

silversea cruise silver moon

You won't find any interior cabins with virtual balconies on Silver Moon. Here, every guest sails in a suite with an ocean view and a butler available for pretty much any request you can think of.

In our Deluxe Veranda Suite, full-size glass doors slid open to reveal a balcony with patio furniture, and there was a walk-in closet with a dresser and plenty of room to store our suitcases; more than either of us can say for our New York City-area apartments.

silversea cruise silver moon

When we arrived, there was a bottle of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé waiting in the separate living and dining area, and our butler, Antonio, offered to pour us glasses and unpack our suitcases.

silversea cruise silver moon

I've had access to a butler before during luxury hotel stays, but I can't say I've ever known how to take advantage of the service, exactly. But even though we didn't ask Antonio to unpack our belongings, he always found ways to awe us during our stay. I came back to the suite one day to find my sunglasses, which I'd left out on a table, polished and wrapped in a Silversea microfiber cloth.

When we asked about different amenities, Antonio brought an entire tray of different brands and products to choose from, as if Bvlgari bath products may not be suitable. During sea days, he drew us fragrant bath with soaking salts.

silversea cruise silver moon

The intuitive service extended far beyond our designated butler, of course. In fact, the service on board may have been the most remarkable part of the cruise — and that's really saying something when you consider that almost every suite category has a marble bathroom with both a rainfall shower and a full-size tub.

silversea cruise silver moon

You won't find any two-story suites on Silver Moon, but during a tour we did get to see a handful of other suite categories, including a Silver Suite (which has double vanities in the main bathroom and a separate powder room).

silversea cruise silver moon

We also saw a Grand Suite, which has the largest balconies on board and, when booked with a second bedroom, sprawls over 1,970 square feet (including the teak veranda).

Onboard dining

SALT Kitchen is, understandably, a focal mark of cruising on Silver Moon. In addition to the dedicated "terrain" menu that changes daily depending on your destination, there's also a consistent "voyage" menu that draws on influences and inspirations from the region at large.

Some of my favorite meals were at SALT, including a shrimp yiouvetsi served with local San Michali cheese from the island of Syros.

silversea cruise silver moon

But travelers sailing on Silver Moon have seven other dining venues to choose from (or more, depending on your interpretation).

Guests who have sailed with Silversea in the past will recognize Atlantide, La Terrazza (which transforms from a buffet at breakfast and lunch to an upscale Italian restaurant in the evenings), Arts Café, Spaccanapoli, Silver Note and Kaiseki, a Japanese restaurant that usually costs $40 per person for dinner but serves knockout sushi and sashimi at lunch for no extra charge. (Thanks for the tip, Art.)

silversea cruise silver moon

There's also The Grill, which serves casual poolside fare during the day and transforms into Hot Rocks at night, where guests can prepare their meals at their table on heated volcanic stones.

And La Dame (typically $60 per person) produced one of the best, and most memorable, meals of the entire sailing in terms of execution, service and presentation. My Chilean sea bass was so buttery, it was almost indistinguishable from the sauce it was served in. Soups were poured tableside, and every dessert arrived with a personalized flourish.

silversea cruise silver moon

The food and beverage program was one of the best, but somewhat inconsistent, parts of our sailing — something that can likely be chalked up to a new crew on a new ship still getting their feet wet as cruising resumes after the coronavirus pandemic brought the entire industry to a halt March of 2020.

While some meals rivaled the best I've had on land, I also ordered a tuna steak at La Terrazza that was overcooked to the point of having a grayish hue. There were a few other misses as well, including a shrimp curry at Atlantide that simply fell short of expectations (which already, on the third day, were quite high). But otherwise, the food and beverage program was exceptional.

silversea cruise silver moon

And there's something for everyone at Silver Moon, whether you're looking for a quick, casual bite or a lengthy, lavish dinner.

The cocktails at SALT Bar, for example, were downright works of art. But I personally preferred more traditional cocktails at the Observation Library on Deck 11, which boasts sunset views from the front of the ship.

The details

As you might expect for a ship stocked with Ars Italica caviar, sailings on Silver Moon aren't inexpensive. Ten-day Mediterranean voyages similar to the one I experienced start around $6,300 per guest this summer.

But the price tag includes more than just your suite. In fact, Silversea is known for offering one of the most all-inclusive products in cruising.

On an upcoming 10-day Mediterranean cruise to and from Piraeus, the port of Athens, Greece, entry-level Vista Suites start at $7,800 per person. That price includes economy-class round-trip airfare; transfers between the airport and ship; one shore excursion per port, per day; onboard gratuities; unlimited Wi-Fi and more.

Some itineraries cover flights in the form of a credit baked into the cruise fares instead, and select itineraries include private transfers between your home and airport.

Starting in 2022, Silversea will make private executive transfers a standard perk . Guests will get a chauffeured car from their home directly to their ships (if nearby) or the local airport at no extra charge. The same service will be available to passengers in reverse at the end of their cruises. Silversea said these private transfers can be arranged in more than 200 cities in over 50 countries around the world

There are still extras you'll have to pay for on Silver Muse, including spa treatments (I spent $159 for a 50-minute massage, though that included a 15% tip), dinners at Kaiseki and La Dame ($40 and $60 per person, respectively) and some activities.

Bottom line

silversea cruise silver moon

I've cruised before, but have never on a luxury line. And my friend, who joined me for her first-ever cruise, is certainly spoiled for life.

Silversea's modern take on luxury is unfussy and instinctive. If you so much as think about asking for your wine glass to be refilled, you'll find it has already been topped off by a smiling crew member.

And Silver Moon's signature SALT program is a sensation.

I was also impressed with Silversea's no-nonsense approach to safety and health during the pandemic. Right now, Silversea is requiring all passengers on the ship to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccine before boarding. All crew members are required to be required vaccinated, too.

Even though daily temperatures before leaving your room might sound annoying, they're done quickly and really don't interfere with your morning routine.

silversea cruise silver moon

Travelers also need to submit to an on-arrival COVID-19 test, and are not allowed to board until a negative result is returned (mine took about 20 minutes). During my sailing, Silversea also mandated mid-cruise COVID-19 tests and provided end-of-sailing rapid antigen tests for free.

At a time when coronavirus cases are surging again and concerns about coronavirus variants are causing destinations to tighten restrictions once again, many of us remarked at how safe we all felt on Silver Moon, in a protective bubble sailing around the Greek isles and stocked with enough caviar and Champagne to transport us all back to a far more relaxing time.

Silversea Silver Moon: New…And Perfectly Seasoned!

Silversea’s New S.A.L.T. Culinary Program Immerses Guests in Their Destination

Until last week when I sailed a segment of Silver Moon’s Panama Canal voyage from Fort Lauderdale, the dishes I most closely associated with Mexico and the Caribbean were things like chicken wings, jalapeno poppers, nachos and other artery-cloggers I’d pluck off the grubby menus of places like Señor Frog’s.

silversea cruise silver moon

Silversea’s Silver Moon has changed all that with S.A.L.T (Sea and Land Taste), an innovative and ambitious five-pronged program that immerses guests in the local cuisine, traditions and culinary heritage of a voyage’s destination–in my case, Honduras, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama.

S.A.L.T was designed by Silversea in collaboration with award-winning travel and food writer Adam Sachs, most recently Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious Saveur Magazine . “My mission for S.A.L.T,” states Sachs, “is simply to apply an endless curiosity and adventurous appetite to deep-dive explorations of the ingredients, cuisine and rituals of the countries and communities we visit.”

And that he does with a program that is, at once, educational, entertaining, fun and, above all, delicious!

– The S.A.L.T. Lab is an elaborate hands-on kitchen where guests whip up a local dish while receiving instruction and hearing the fascinating story of the ingredients and their place in the history of the region. Did you know, for example, that tamales didn’t suddenly pop up at your local Mexican take-out joint, but date back to 8000 B.C. and appear in South American cave drawings and hieroglyphics?  And bravo to the S.A.L.T. Lab for selecting dishes that are simple enough for even novice cooks to prepare:  the colors, textures and taste of my finished Tamal de Olla were inspiring!

– The S.A.L.T. Talks include entertaining and informative lectures that explore a region’s culinary focus and often include a cooking demonstration and discussion of the most suitable wine for the dish—samples and recipes included. On my sailing, Nicholas Gill, co-author of The Latin American Cookbook, took us on a culinary journey of dishes and ingredients that span Mexico’s tropical coasts to the icy islands at the foot of South America, skipping over the book’s chapter on insect recipes, thank God.

– The S.A.L.T. Bar celebrates the local cocktails, wines and beers found in the region and/or island or city where Silver Moon is right now . The perfect cozy spot for cocktails and pre-dinner conversation, if you sail Central America, ask bartender Andreas to whip you up the El Dorado, a delicious Columbian concoction that includes gold rum, coconut, mango, lemon, and vanilla, topped with a light and airy egg white froth.

– The S.A.L.T. Kitchen is a spacious, contemporary spot done in a restful blue and beige color scheme, with throw pillow-adorned banquettes and table seating. This is the jewel in the S.A.L.T. crown, celebrating local cuisine with elevated versions of destination-specific and regional favorites, the destination menu changing daily while the regional selections remain for as long as the ship is sailing the area. For me in Belize, that meant a moist and tasty yucca bread slathered with lime and garlic-infused butter followed by a rich and briny coconut and clam soup and a main course of hot and spicy jerked ground beef generously topped with crispy spiced potatoes. A crunchy coconut tart that rivalled the best macaroon I’ve ever tasted sweetly topped off a sumptuous meal. (Reservations suggested; no surcharge.)

silversea cruise silver moon

– S.A.L.T. Ashore delivers guests to the destination’s chefs, markets and restaurants for experiences that truly capture a location’s culinary soul. In Roatan, Honduras, we travelled to Punta Gorda’s oceanfront Halisco Place Restaurant where, while sipping water from a freshly picked coconut, we witnessed the ancient process that creates crispy, cassava-based areba bread and learned of the medicinal qualities of local herbs like jack-ass root, which is reputed to cure cancer, diabetes and malaria and is currently being used to attack Covid. Later, beneath the restaurant’s cheerful yellow and orange wooden canopy, Chef Astel Samuel Raymond introduced us to Garifuna cuisine with a rich and savory coconut milk-based stew studded with bananas, dumplings, and shrimp before serving a delicious main course of deep-fried yellowtail which just hours ago was happily swimming in the sparking blue sea before us.

Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here, something that’s easy to do when you’ve experienced the debut of a program as ground-breaking and multi-faceted as S.A.L.T.  Because what makes the S.A.L.T Program even more exciting is that you’ll find it aboard Silver Moon , the most dazzling ship to debut this year!

Intimate Ship, Spacious Accommodations and Butlers for All!

silversea cruise silver moon

Silver Moon , which debuted in June 2021, is the latest addition to Silversea Cruises’ elegant, ultra-luxury fleet. At 40,700 grt and a guest capacity of 596, this is an intimate all-suite ship with accommodations that range from the 333 square foot Vista Suite to the massive 1,055 square-foot Owner’s Suite. 96% of the ship’s 298 suites include private verandas, and in all categories, you’ll find marble bathrooms with a full line of high-end Bulgari toiletries, interactive wall-mounted flat-screen TV, beds outfitted with the finest Italian linens and a spacious walk-in closet. A butler, who is available to unpack your suitcase on request, service your in-suite bar or deliver and serve room service orders, is assigned to each suite. And you can expect a voyage-full of little surprises during your stay:  From the bottle of champagne that greets guests at embarkation to the lovely Bulgari clutch/make-up bag stuffed with Covid essentials like masks, hand sanitizer and Bulgari hand cream to combat the drying effect of the sanitizer, a durable Silversea leather-trimmed tote bag, a stylish Silversea baseball cap and chocolates (sometimes individual and other times a delightful little box of them) each night.

All-Inclusive…and Soon To Be More So!   Like all ships in the Silversea fleet, Silver Moon is an all-inclusive experience with gratuities, all beverages, and most specialty restaurants complimentary on each sailing. And things get even better this spring aboard the line’s classic cruise ships:  Beginning in March, Silversea includes in fares international round trip economy flights, pre- and post-cruise hotel stays, private limousine transfers to and from a guest’s airport (within 50 miles) and offers at least one complimentary shore excursion at each port.

New…Yet Familiar:

silversea cruise silver moon

Veteran Silversea guests will find much of Silver Moon familiar, from the architecturally-stunning, plushly-carpeted double staircase that ascends through midship (on my holiday sailing, adorned with pine garland, Christmas stockings and ornaments) to favorite cocktail destinations like the Panorama Lounge and Dolce Vida and the breathtaking sunsets viewed from The Observation Lounge/Library high atop the ship on deck 11. They’ll know that the quirky Arts Café is where they’ll head for a particularly early morning coffee, a sweet, sandwich or snack at any time of the day. Cigar lovers will appreciate an expanded Connoisseur’s Club which, aboard Silver Moon , includes the traditional clubby space filled with overstuffed leather easy chairs plus a new sheltered outdoor area.

Those who’ve sailed Silver Moon’s sister ship, Silver Muse , may already be familiar with the enormous size of Silver Moon’s swimming pool (you can actually swim laps) but those who have not will be astonished that a ship as intimate as Silver Moon could feature a pool three times the size of that found on most megaships!

No matter which ship a Silversea veteran has sailed, they’ll be very familiar with the extraordinary service aboard Silver Moon …and newbies will be dazzled!

A World of Dining:

silversea cruise silver moon

Perhaps we shouldn’t be all that astonished by the innovation of Silver Moon’s S.A.L.T Program—it’s not surprising that a line that is known for the excellence of its on-board dining should add a new and exciting twist to its culinary options.  S.A.L.T. is certainly shaking up Silver Moon’s dining scene but fans of other, more traditional Silversea dining venues, will be delighted to find many of their favorites still on board!

The light-filled Atlantide, Silver Moon’s main dining room, celebrates continental cuisine with the freshest seafood, tender steaks, sweetly-glazed duck and more. And every night caviar is available as an appetizer. (Caviar is even available through room service aboard Silver Moon !)

In the evenings, a generous antipasti platter of meats, cheeses and bruschetta and a basket brimming with savory breads greet guests at the indoor/outdoor La Terrazza. This romantic and popular Italian eatery is the place to go for tender fresh pastas under a blizzard of shredded parmesan, or a perfectly-charred veal chop alongside a rich and flavorful sauce with, perhaps, a strawberry-and-whipped cream- filled rum cake wrapped in a dark chocolate collar for dessert.

Dinner and a show?  The Silver Note and its live (though unintrusive) blues or jazz backdrop is the perfect setting for those looking for inventive “small plate” meals that are as artistic as they are delicious:  From buttered lobster tail to a vivid artist’s palette of bite-sized vegetables and seafood and a small, asparagus-topped sliced glazed duck dish. Start your evening at the intimate Silver Note Bar at the entrance to the supper club.

Fine Asian-inspired cuisine is the theme at the sophisticated Kaiseki (surcharge $40 at dinner; complimentary at lunch). Think entrees like tender black cod and the freshest sushi and sashimi against an experience that emphasizes meticulous preparation, drama and traditions.

For something more casual, head to The Grill and its Hot Rocks, a poolside dining experience that allows guests to grill their own meat or fish selections at their table under the stars, atop volcanic rock heated to a temperature of 400 degrees. Apprehensive?  Let the chef do it for you…though you’ll miss all the fun!

An even more casual option may be found at the outdoor Spaccanapoli where, at dinner, 15 varieties of luscious pizza are available alongside an appetizer plate of briny olives, sweet marinated tomatoes and pungent chunks of parmesan reggiano.

And for that special occasion, it’s La Dame, Silver Moon’s ultimate French-inspired fine dining experience ($60 surcharge). Amid romantic lighting and tables set with crisp linens and sparkling crystal, guests are surrounded by magnificent panels of hand-crafted Lalique as each memorable course is impeccably served. Caviar to begin, perhaps, followed by a creamy and earthy mushroom soup and a refreshing intermezzo–lemon sorbet topped with the thinnest slice of candied lemon. What follows might be a luscious portion of Chilean sea bass slathered in a buttery, parsley-studded sauce and resting atop a rainbow of perfectly braised vegetables, and a Grand Marnier souffle dessert, its delectable vanilla sauce sensuously drizzled tableside by the attentive server. A tray of rich and decadent chocolate truffles concludes this amazing dining experience.

Silver Moon certainly continues the elegance and comfort that Silversea is famous for. And with its myriad extraordinary dining options and the addition of the innovative S.A.L.T. Program, there’s no question: sophisticated travelers are going to eat it right up.

Silversea cruise review: a Central and North American adventure

An incredible journey featuring cultural exploration, cooking classes, comfort and more

silversea cruise silver moon

Sailing on Silversea's luxurious and exquisitely designed Silver Nova ship is dreamy in itself, but add to that an incredible itinerary including the iconic Panama Canal and you have yourself a bucket-list cruise.

As a solo traveller , I was pleasantly surprised by how well solo guests are looked after, with nightly solo traveller drinks, hosted by the friendly guest relations team. I made some fantastic friends here on day one, which turned into a group who met for dinners, drinks on deck and post-trip conversations.

Tours and activities

Mayan ruins

Some people book their excursions as soon as they are released, but I booked mine the day I arrived and still managed to get on my desired trips. However, I would recommend booking tours and activities in advance, if possible, to avoid disappointment.

For me, the stand-out excursion had to be my first Mayan ruins experience, in Belize. It was certainly worth the hike to see the fascinating geometric carvings face to face, and the tasty traditional lunch of Belize chicken, rice and beans beforehand certainly helped keep us going.

Another exciting excursion was the all-terrain vehicle trip through the rainforest in Costa Rica. Seeing the colourful flora and fauna comfortably from inside was fun, then we got out for a stroll where our guide pointed out local species such as the eye-catching bright red poison dart frog.

In Honduras, we were exposed to the culture with song and dance, history lesson opposite the bright blue sea from a knowledgeable local, as well as a taste of the traditional taro bread.

The high point, however, was traversing the Panama Canal. Guests sat together in the plush panoramic lounge, with mimosas in hand, eagerly waiting to pass through the first lock. It felt monumental, and the Panamanian cooking class and talk about the history of the canal, as well as the Panamanian dance show in the evening, made the day all the more memorable.

During "sea days" there are a host of activities to choose from, including dance classes, language classes, and even origami. My favourite was the quiz sessions – especially since my team won a few times!

For a more relaxing pastime, pay a visit to the smart Otium spa, where you're offered champagne upon arrival before an exfoliating and nourishing 'Roman Bliss' massage.

Silver Nova room

A cabin should be a place you look forward to retreating to after an adventurous day on excursion, or even a fun-filled day at sea, and my cabin was a real haven.

There is a choice of toiletries, from pH-balanced Sebamed to luxuriously scented Bvlgari, and my attentive butler made sure I received the right ones. My delicious ganache chocolates were also topped up daily.

The bathroom was very spacious, with clean lines and Carrara marble finish, which was carried through to tabletops in the suite. The walk-in closet meant I could stash my suitcase, with plenty of space to unpack and hang all my clothes, and ample shelving too.

I also had a desk, a dressing area with plug sockets adapting to all nationalities, and a comfortable sofa to sit. If I wanted to dine outside, there was also a balcony with two chairs and a table.

Eating and drinking

Silver Nova food - La Terraza restaurant sushi

Breakfast can be eaten at a few venues, as well as a room service, which was popular with guests, set up on their balconies and always brought on time.

I particularly enjoyed the 'healthy' options at the Marquee restaurant which also offers fabulous poke bowls for lunch, or you could order an excellent pizza from adjacent restaurant Spaccanapoli, which are cooked in a traditional oven.

There's a broad, ever-changing buffet menu at La Terrazza for lunch – its dessert selection is huge and for dinner Italian classics shine. At delicately designed Japanese restaurant Kaiseki, there's sushi and hearty ramen bowls, among a larger dinner selection.

At my favourite, the S.A.L.T restaurant, where the menu centres on the country you're in, try some of their local cuisine, elevated yet authentic. You can enjoy some jazz accompaniment at La Dame, the ship's signature French restaurant.

Throughout the day I popped into the Arts Café for delicious coffee – always a plus –or a slice of cake and fresh juice in a light-filled space that's a joy to sit in.

One evening I fancied something chocolate-y and ended up with one of the best brownies ever from the room service menu.

The verdict

This voyage took me on an incredible journey from Fort Lauderdale to Cozumel, Belize to Roatan, Honduras and Costa Rica to Panama.

As well as the journey, Silversea adds exciting context to the countries you are visiting, from cooking classes that highlight the fascinating cuisines, to talks giving the background history and much more – all creating an incredible and unforgettable trip.

Yasemen Kaner-White was a guest on the Silver Nova ship, and her trip was a segment of the Fort Lauderdale, US to Callao, Peru voyage.

Door-to-door fare is £9,700 per person based on double occupancy in a Classic Veranda (including private executive airport transfers, overnight hotel stay, round trip flights, food and beverage on board, butler service, expedition gear and shore excursions). For more information, visit Silversea.com or call 0844 251 0837.

Subject: flagsam aka CuteGirl

Commentary: CuteGirl is currently one of the operators of SkipIRC. When she is not busy moderating the chat, CuteGirl likes to smith from time to time. Therefore I have included Hephaistos, smith to the Greek gods, in the coat of arms. In the other quarters I placed a nice knot pattern, which could just as well be one of CuteGirls silver creations. These patterns also reflect CuteGirl's Keltic heritage. And as a last reference to the smithing, I decided to add not a motto or supporters, but a beautifully smithed frame (or console ).

How the prompt fits in: When thinking of ornamental knots, the first thing that comes to my mind are the Keltic knots.

6 Top Luxury Alaska Cruises for 2024 & Beyond

C ruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. As such, the cruise will include an exclusive gala dinner and other unique experiences. Other special voyages welcome marine biologist and National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin, who will share personal stories from his extensive career and expert insights about humpback whale habitats and behaviors.
