Tamnavulin is one of the younger Scottish distilleries and only built in 1966. It was founded to produce a great quantity of Whisky for Blends and this is still its main job. There are only a few Single Malts released as official bottlings from Tamnavulin, the “mill on the hill”, but the Speyside distillery on the banks of the river Livet is worth to have a closer look on it.

The Tamnavulin 12 year old is probably the best known release of Tamnavulin. With its aromatic and light sweetness it is a very nice Malt to be enjoyed as an opener before a menu. With notes of heather, malt, fruits and spices and with a hint of smoke the Tamnavulin is a very typical example of a light and aromatic Speysider. Maybe you already got to know a release that is called Ben Bracken. It is specially bottled for supermarkets and it is - a Tamnavulin! If you are lucky you will find one or another of older bottlings as for example the Tamnavulin Rare old, released by Gordon & MacPhail in 2014 as a 30 year old Single Malt. There are intensive Sherry aromas, tropical fruits, coconut and coffee to be discovered in the taste of this very aromatic Tamnavulin Whisky.

However, most of the Whisky produced at Tamnavulin goes into Blends of Whyte & Mackay.

Since 2008 the production capacity of Tamnavulin is about four million liters per year and as it is mentioned in the Malt Whisky Yearbook the owners plan to almost tap this full potential in 2015. 16 mashes a week will allow an output of 3.5 million liters new spirit.

The water for the production itself is taken from a naturel well and is stored in an underground reservoir. The cooling water comes from the River Livet next to the distillery. Tamnavulin makes big efforts to increase their thermal efficiency and use the intercepted heat of the distilled spirit to heat the new wash.

The Mashing

The full lauter mash tun of Tamnavulin distillery has a capacity of 10.7 tonnes.

The Fermentation

Up to summer 2015 there had been eight wash backs at Tamnavulin, four of them made of Corten steel. In the 1950’s some Scottish distilleries had installed Corten steel wash backs but stainless steel causes less danger of corrosion so there are only a few Corton steel ones left in some distilleries. In summer 2015 Tamnavulin removed the last remaining four and replaced them by five new once made of stainless steel. So there are now nine washbacks in use at Tamnavulin and they are in use every single day. The fermentation at Tamnavulin takes about 48 hours.

The Pot Stills

Three pairs of pot stills are situated in Tamnavulin’s still house.

On site there are two racket warehouses. They are impressively large: storage is done 10 casks high. This enables Tamnavulin to mature 35.000 casks onsite which are however not all maturing Tamnavulin Whisky but also filled with spirit from other distilleries. As a blender Whyte & Mackay also needs many different other Single Malts.

The History

When Tamnavulin was founded in 1966 it was a response on the big demand the Whisky industry reported. The Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Company was consolidated as a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers Limited to build and operate a modern distillery. When Whyte & Mackay bought Invergordon Distillers in 1993 at a price of £382 million, Tamnavulin Distillery was passed into their property as well, together with Bruichladdich, Isle of Jura, Tullibardine and Invergordon. In 1995 Tamnavulin was closed. There was a short term of distillation for some weeks in 2000, but Tamnavulin only saw a real revival, when United Spirits acquired Whyte & Mackay in 2007. The Indian company under the leadership of Vijay Mallya initiated a refurbishment with new automatism and modern technology. From 2013 onwards Diageo acquired more and more shares of United Spirits until they became the largest shareholder and substantial changes followed. In 2014 Whyte & Mackay was sold by Diageo to Emperador Inc. a subsidiary of the Phillipine Alliance Global Group, Inc. at £430 millions to ease competition concerns.

Visitor Center

Up to the 1990’s there had been a visitor center at Tamnavulin, located in the old wool mill. Unfortunately it is closed now and no tours are offered.

David looked after guests of the Tamnavulin distillery and delivered a very professional, tailored service.

From booking to the trip itself Moray Tours are a pleasure to work with. Local experts with great guidance and customer service. Highly recommended and I shall be using them again.

Thanks Daryl, it is our pleasure to be able to help anytime. Hope to catch up soon, Regards David

A group of nine, in need of transport from and to Inverness Airport to Aberlour. David was there to help and even found anoter car for us as we wouldn't all fit in his van. He's very experienced as a guide and as a driver and his tips and recomandations were highly appreciated. The tour we managed to book with him during the festival was super ok and he was very flexible to accomodate all the personalities in the grup. He also helped us with short-notice trasport to a distillery when we couldn't find anybody else to help. All in all it was great to have David on our side during the festival. Highly appreciated! P.S. One of the few Scotsmen that we, as non native english speakers, could understand :)

Thanks for the great review, it was my pleasure to help you guys. I am glad you enjoyed my Speyside Posh Pub Crawl and hope you can come back again. Slainte David

Our group of 6 adults were quite happy with our day trip from Inverness to Dufftown. I dealt with David via email who was very patient with my several changes of plans over the months prior to our trip. Once we settled on the Glenfarclas and Glenfiddich distilleries, David reserved for us along with lunch at the Malt Barn, which was also quite lovely. Ronnie was a great driver and also gave us good tips on restaurants in Inverness. We drove through the top of the Cairngorms park to Dufftown, then returned via Elgin. A couple of things we might reconsider in our itinerary (please note: these are by no means the fault of Moray Firth Tours): 1. Eliminate one of the distillery tours. Distillery tours are all basically the same, as we discovered over the course of our 2-week trip - if you've seen one, you've seen them all. 2. See Elgin Cathedral during opening hours. After 4pm we could only view through the gates which was perhaps not worth the visit. David had warned it would be closed by the time we arrived so as mentioned it's no fault of Moray Firth Tours. But I misunderstood, thinking we would still be able to wander around some of the grounds. I wanted to mention, in case anyone else might make my mistake - try to get there before 4pm. That being said, David did an excellent job providing all the information and setting up our itinerary to make the day go smoothly from start to finish. A very nice day out and we would definitely recommend to book with Moray Firth Tours!

Thanks for the great review, I'm very sorry you never manage to see inside the Elgin Cathedral due to the time of year. Hopefully you will be able to come back again and visit. Regards David

After a thorough research of the different transportation options to do a whisky tour in Speyside, we chose David. We were absolutely right in our choice! David is a very kind and knowledgeable driver, willing to go to all lengths to ensure that you have the best experience possible. He has a very comfortable van, offers refreshments as well as other amenities and is without a doubt the best value for money option. There are very similar options to his in the area, costing twice or even thrice the amount of money. We highly recommend David for your Whisky tasting experience in Speyside, it is definitely worth it.

Thanks very much for the great comments Alejandro. I am glad you and your family enjoyed your trip to Bonnie Scotland. Hope to see you again in Speyside, Regards David - Slainte

We had a group of 5 looking to do a Speyside whisky tasting tour a few days before Hogmanay (New Years), but hadn't realised most of the distilleries are closed at that time of year. David with Moray Firth Tours did a bunch of research for us, and found us a great distillery (Tomatin) and brewery (Black Isle) open for tastings and tours. He also brought along some extra whisky and beer for us to try along the way, and went the extra mile, letting us stop in Inverness to visit a whisky bar. We had the best day with David, and we HIGHLY recommend going with Moray Firth for tours and transport in the Speyside area!

Thanks Callie, it was my pleasure to show you all around and hope you enjoyed the day. Hope you had a Happy New Year & come back soon. Regards David

My girlfriend and I were interested in exploring the Speyside area and visiting some of the whisky distilleries. David at Moray Firth was extremely helpful in suggesting which areas / distilleries to visit, as well as sending along costs, ideas for lunch and coordinating how long everything would take. He even picked us up at our hotel in Inverness, which is a little out of the way for them. The driver, Hamish, was great - he really knew the area and we spent a very pleasant lunch getting to know him. I highly recommend Moray Firth Tours & Transport for any visits to the area.

Good Evening Al, thanks for the great comments. We are glad you both enjoyed the day on the Malt Whisky Trail and hope you return to Scotland soon. Regards David

How to pronouce Tamnavulin? tam-na-voo-lin

Tamnavulin's story Tamnavulin is a reasonably large and modern yet little known distillery that is located in the centre of the Speyside region, close to the small town of Ballindalloch. The majority of the four million litre capacity went towards a multitude of blended whiskies, until the distillery was mothballed in 1995. Mothballing is the process by which a distillery is closed down but all the equipment remains intact so that production can restart at any time. A very small percentage of Tamnavulin whisky is available as a single malt although the current owners, Whyte & Mackay, plan to increase this now that the distillery has re-opened. There is currently just a 12 years old on the market and this is light, fresh and grassy in character. A few independent bottlings can be found, primarily form Gordon & Macphail, Douglas Laing and Duncan Taylor & Co.

Tamnavulin's history Tamnavulin was founded in 1966 by the Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Company, which was a newly created arm of Invergordon Distillers Limited. They were responding to a boom in the whisky industry and needed a modern and efficient distillery to help meet the demand. They selected a spot in the beautiful Glen Livet, close to the other distilleries at Braeval, Glenlivet and Tomintoul, on the banks of the famous River Livet. Despite this, the distillery does not gather its water from the river but from the underground Easterton Spring in the surrounding hills. Tamnavulin was later taken over by Whyte & Mackay and they used the whisky from there in their popular range of blends. The distillery was closed in 1995 and was only re-opened in 2007, when Whyte & Mackay were taken over by United Spirits. Their chairman, Vijay Mallya, decided to restart the distillery and this was easy as all the equipment had remained in place. Initial production was just one million litres during 2007 but this was stepped up to the four million litre capacity in 2008.

Programs Announced For 2022 Spirit Of Speyside Whisky Festival

  • by Gary Carter
  • March 17, 2022

One of the largest annual whisky celebrations, the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival recently unveiled its lineup for this year’s big celebration.

In all, more than 500 events will take place around the Festival, slated to run April 27th to May 2nd. These will allow ticket holders exclusive access to world famous distilleries, the chance to meet the craftspeople behind the liquid, and immerse themselves in the heart of malt whisky country.

Tickets to the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival are now available.

Spirit of Speyside 2022

George McNeil, chairman of The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, said they have an impressive range of events to offer, with new additions to the 2022 program, including a mash-up of Star Wars and whisky tasting in memory of Brett Ferencz, known to many as the Scotch Trooper, with 25% of ticket sales going towards cancer research.

“The last few years have been difficult for everyone and as we begin to return to normality I know that the many partners and people who help to bring the Festival to life are gearing up to welcome people from all over the globe to Speyside,” McNeil said in a prepared statement. “I hope to see people from far and wide joining us to celebrate the world’s largest producing whisky region, from whisky novices, budding master blenders and everyone in between. I look forward to welcoming people once again to an area I am lucky enough to call home.”

Program highlights include History of the Highball with whisky legend Sarah Burgess, an evening not to be missed with Glen Moray’s Iain Allan at Elgin Cathedral, and one-of-a-kind experiences at a number of distilleries not usually open to the public including Dufftown, Tamdhu and Tamnavulin distillery tours and tastings.

Paul Bush, director of events for VisitScotland, said, “We are delighted to support the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival through our International Events Funding Program. Its 2022 line-up of tastings, distillery tours and more looks set to deliver another fantastic celebration of Scotland’s national drink. Uniquely Scottish events such as the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival can only serve to further strengthen the country’s reputation as a world-leading events destination.”

First launched in 1999, the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival’s annual celebration of Scotland’s national drink has developed into one of the largest events of its kind anywhere in the world.

tamnavulin distillery tour

Introduction:

Tamnavulin Distillery is known for its light and aromatic Speyside Single Malt Whiskies. The Tamnavulin 12 – year – old expression is widely recognized and appreciated for its pleasant aromas, light sweetness, and notes of heather, malt, fruits, spices, and a subtle hint of smoke. It serves as a delightful opener before a meal. Another notable release is the Ben Bracken, specially bottled for supermarkets, which is also a Tamnavulin expression. Older bottlings, such as the Tamnavulin Rare Old 30 – year – old, offer intense Sherry aromas, tropical fruits, coconut, and coffee flavors.

Production:

Tamnavulin has a production capacity of around four million liters per year, with plans to reach this full potential. The distillery carries out 16 mashes per week, resulting in an output of 3.5 million liters of new spirit. The water used in production is sourced from a natural well and stored in an underground reservoir. The cooling water is obtained from the nearby River Livet. Tamnavulin strives to increase thermal efficiency by utilizing the heat generated during distillation to warm the new wash.

The Mashing:

Tamnavulin’s full lauter mash tun has a capacity of 10.7 tonnes.

The Fermentation:

Tamnavulin previously had eight washbacks, four of which were made of Corten steel. However, in 2015, the distillery replaced the remaining Corten steel washbacks with five new stainless steel ones, bringing the total to nine. Fermentation at Tamnavulin takes approximately 48 hours.

The Pot Stills:

Tamnavulin’s still house is home to three pairs of pot stills.

Warehouses:

Tamnavulin has two large racked warehouses on-site, capable of storing casks up to 10 layers high. While many casks are used for maturing Tamnavulin Whisky, some also hold spirit from other distilleries. As a blender, Whyte & Mackay requires a variety of different Single Malts.

History and Revival:

Established in 1966, Tamnavulin was founded to meet the growing demand in the Whisky industry. It was initially operated as a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers Limited. In 1993, when Whyte & Mackay acquired Invergordon Distillers, Tamnavulin became part of their portfolio. The distillery experienced a period of closure in 1995, with only a brief resumption of production in 2000. However, Tamnavulin’s true revival came in 2007 when United Spirits, led by Vijay Mallya, acquired Whyte & Mackay. Under their ownership, the distillery underwent refurbishment and modernization. In 2014, Whyte & Mackay was sold to Emperador Inc., a subsidiary of the Philippine Alliance Global Group, Inc. Diageo also held shares in Tamnavulin, resulting in significant changes.

Visitor Center:

Tamnavulin previously had a visitor center located in the old wool mill, but it is currently closed, and no tours are offered.

How we make our whisky

Tucked away on the edge of the River Livet, the small group of skilled, time-served craftsmen and women at Tamnavulin Distillery began creating our signature Speyside malt over 50 years ago using the finest ingredients combined with age-old distilling expertise and sophisticated techniques.

Bg Panel 1

When the barley has been malted and dried, it then passes through the mill in small batches to grind it into ‘grist’. This releases the starch inside the grains of barley which we use in the mashing process.

Img Panel Image 1

We draw our water from underground springs in the Easterton hills formed by snowmelt from the surrounding Cairngorm mountains. This water is naturally filtered through ancient limestone rock before reaching the distillery, resulting in some of the purest spring water to be found in Scotland.

We add heated spring water to the grist and gently stir the mixture in the ‘mash tun.’ This converts the starch in the grains into sugar. The sugary liquid collected is now called ‘wort’ and will be transferred to the following stage.

Bg Panel Mashing

The spring water at Tamnavulin Distillery is naturally filtered through layers of ancient limestone rock, resulting in some of the purest water to be found in Scotland.

Fermentation

The wort is transferred into ‘washbacks’ where the yeast is added. It is then left for a number of days while the yeast converts the sugar in the wort into alcohol. Once this part of the process is completed, we are now left with a low alcohol liquid called ‘wash’ ready to be distilled.

Img Panel Image Fermentation

Distillation

The wash then goes through the distillation process in order to increase the strength of the alcohol. The stills are heated to boil the liquid inside causing it to evaporate. Once the vapours reach the top of the still they are condensed and transferred to the ‘spirit still’ where the same process happens for a second time.

Then, once this is finished, the strong alcohol passes through a ‘spirit safe’ where the Stillman separates the liquid into three sections; the head, the heart and the tail. The ‘heart’ of the run will be used for maturation and the ‘head’ and ‘tail’ will be re-distilled until they too reach the optimum strength for maturation.

Img Panel Image Distillation

We hand select our oak barrels, including Bourbon casks from North America and Sherry casks from Spain, to ensure their influence will perfectly complement and enhance the characteristics of Tamnavulin; rich, smooth, mellow and refreshing. Our cask collection goes back to the 1960s when the distillery was first built.

Once filled with new-make spirit, the casks will rest in our cool, dark warehouses for a number of years. Over time, the whisky gains its colour and flavour from these casks until it has achieved an exquisite flavour profile.

During maturation, a percentage of the contents of the cask are lost each year to evaporation, a naturally occurring process known as ‘the Angel’s share.’

History  In 1966, Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd. built the Tamnavulin distillery in order to satisfy the growing demand from whisky blenders such as Whyte & Mackay, Crawfords, and Mackinlay’s. In 1993, Whyte & Mackay became the owners of Tamnavulin when the company purchased Invergordon Distillers (the parent company of the Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd.) The purchase price of £382 million also included the distilleries Bruichladdich, Isle of Jura, and Tullibardine. The Tamnavulin distillery was closed in May 1995. Ownership was transferred to Kyndal International in 2001, and then to the United Spirits division of United Breweries Group in 2007, operated by Whyte and Mackay Ltd. The distillery began operating once again in July 2007 after a major refurbishment with new automation and process control which was installed by Canongate Technology. With its eight washbacks, six stills, and a Saladin box to malt the barley, Tamnavulin is sufficiently equipped with modern distilling technology to produce four million liters of alcohol per year. To increase thermal efficiency, recently distilled spirit is used to heat incoming wash. The distillation water supply is stored in a subterranean reservoir.

distilleries

Tamnavulin distillery, tamnavulin is the second distillery to be built within the glen of the river livet, after the infamous glenlivet..

Known as the mill on the hill, the Tamnavulin distillery is one of the younger Scotch distilleries, established in 1966. The distillery’s aim was to produce large quantities of Whisky, exclusively for the blended scotch market.

When Whyte & Mackay purchased Invergordon distillers in 1993 for £132 million, it took control of Tamnavulin, Bruichladdich, Isle of Jura, Tullibardine, and Invergordon.

Sadly as a result of the slump in demand for Scotch Whisky, the decision was made to close the distillery in 1995.

Reopening for a very limited time in 2000, Tamnavulin remained mothballed until United Spirits purchased Whyte & Mackay in 2007. Under the leadership of Vijay Mallya, the new Indian owners initiated a refurbishment of Tamnavulin and reopened the distillery.

Relaunched on its 50th anniversary in 2016 as a Single Malt, Tamnavulin is now a popular high-street brand of Whisky sold in many supermarkets. The distilleries’ use of hand-selected ex-sherry and red wine casks has earnt Tamnavulin many plaudits. Thanks to the strong marketing behind this formidable Speyside malt, it is not surprising Tamnavulin has now become the UK’s fastest-growing malt brand.

  1. The Tamnavulin Distillery

The Tamnavulin story. Our story began in 1966 with the opening of the distillery in the rural village of Tomnavoulin, Scotland. Although the doors were closed in 1995, we reopened them in 2007 after a major distillery refurbishment. Since then, we've crafted exceptional single malt whisky with a true Speyside character; rich, smooth and mellow.
