The National announce huge UK and European tour dates

The National have today (November 10) unveiled details of huge new UK and European tour dates. Check out all the ticket details and dates below.

The band will play The Eden Project on July 2 with support from This Is The Kit . Tickets for this event go on sale to Inside Track pass-holders from 11am on November 14. The general ticket sale will take place at 6pm on November 16 here .

The National will also play Crystal Palace Park three later on July 5. They will again be supported by This Is The Kit as well as  Unknown Mortal Orchestra  and  Kevin Morby . Tickets for this event go on general sale at 10am on November 17 here .

Speaking about the upcoming gig at Crystal Palace, The National said: “We’re excited to be returning to London next summer, a city we’ve always loved.”

They added: “Crystal Palace is a new neighbourhood to us, although not to the football fans in the band.”

As well as this, the band have unveiled further dates in Cardiff, Manchester and Edinburgh as well as ones throughout Europe. Tickets for these shows also go on sale at 10am on November 17, as do all European dates apart from Milan and Rome which are on sale on November 16 at 10am. The National shared their tenth album ‘ Laugh Track ‘ in September – a surprise release following on from their other 2023 April album, ‘ First Two Pages Of Frankenstein ‘. ‘Space Invader’ was released as the first single from ‘Laugh Track’, while ‘Alphabet City’ arrived in August.

Singer Matt Berninger also recently spoke to  NME  about the “different kind of spotlight” that has fallen on the band after working with  Taylor Swift .

The band have collaborated with Swift on a number of occasions, featuring on her track ‘Coney Island’ from 2020’s ‘ Evermore ‘ before she provided vocals and lyrics for ‘The Alcott’ on their 2023 album ‘ First Two Pages Of Frankenstein ‘. Guitarist Aaron Dessner has also produced Swift’s last three albums and re-recorded records.

“The Taylor thing was super organic,” Berninger  said in the In Conversation interview .

“We’ve known her for a long time and obviously Aaron has been doing so much amazing stuff with her. I wrote ‘The Alcott’ with my wife Carin [Besser] in mind, Aaron sent it to Taylor and she added her own perspective on it and wrote all her parts to it. It was a true duet where she heard that and inhabited the character that I was singing about – which is almost always Carin,” he said.

Berninger continued: “It’s not really a strategic game. Obviously Aaron’s work with Taylor Swift is going to bring a different kind of spotlight, but it’s been fun and cool. All of that has been a really healthy branching out.”

The National Announce New Album First Two Pages of Frankenstein, 2023 Tour Dates

The National have readied their next album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein . The follow-up to 2019’s I Am Easy to Find   is out April 28th via 4AD, and it comes with a lengthy run of 2023 tour dates. What’s more, first single “Tropic Morning News” is available to stream now.

For a while, it seemed like First Two Pages of Frankenstein  — or any new National album — was an impossibility. As the band explains in a press release, lead singer Matt Berninger experienced “a very dark spot where I couldn’t come up with lyrics or melodies at all. Even though we’d always been anxious whenever we were working on a record, this was the first time it ever felt like maybe things really had come to an end.” Fortunately, however, he made it through, and the resulting album — featuring huge names like Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridgers, and Taylor Swift — marks what The National is calling “a new era for the band.”

The National will support First Two Pages of Frankenstein  with a summer tour that includes stops in the US, UK, and Europe. Notably, an August 18th show at Madison Square Garden features “very special guest” Patti Smith, while the other tour dates boast support from Soccer Mommy, The Beths, and Bartees Strange. Tickets go on sale Friday, January 27th at 10:00 a.m. local time, with a Live Nation pre-sale taking place one day earlier on Thursday, January 26th (use code SOUND ). Written by Berninger and his wife Carin, “Tropic Morning News” tackles morning doomscrolling with a deceptively light instrumental. “When Matt came in with that song in the depths of his depression, it felt like a turning point for us,” Aaron Dessner said of the track. “It’s almost Dylan-esque in its lyrics and it’s so much fun to play; everything suddenly felt like it was coming alive again.” Listen to “Tropic Morning News” and check out the artwork and tracklist for  First Two Pages of Frankenstein below.

Last year, The National teamed up with Bon Iver for the track “Weird Goodbyes,” and remixed NEU!’s song “Im Glück” for the Krautrock band’s 50th anniversary box set.

We’re only a few weeks into 2023, and The National have already laid out exciting plans for their entire year.

First, the group will release their new album, “First Two Pages of Frankenstein,” on April 28. Next, they’ll embark on their 19-concert arena tour with special guests Soccer Mommy, The Beths and Bartees Strange.

And, in the middle of all this madness, Matt Berninger and the band will headline at Napa Valley’s BottleRock and Boston’s Boston Calling Festival . Both multi-day Memorial Day weekend extravaganzas will take place on May 26-28.

They’ll close their busy year closes with a massive blow-out show at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Aug. 18 with special guest Patti Smith.

Soccer Mommy is led by 25-year-old singer-songwriter Sophie Allison. The group has been steadily releasing music since 2016, and just last year, they dropped their fifth album, “Sometimes, Forever,” which Rolling Stone awarded four stars .

The Beths are darlings of the indie scene. Originally from New Zealand, the four-member group (only one is named Beth) employs disaffected, dream-like vocals from lead singer Elizabeth Stokes and powerful instrumentals to create a unique sound that lends itself well to Christmas music, as heard here .

Bartees Strange will fire you up. The 33-year-old English indie star straddles the line between rap and rock with a sound reminiscent of TV On The Radio. Asking us to pick a favorite track is no easy feat, but we’re partial to his soaring single “Boomer,” but you can’t go wrong with any track on his 2022 album “Farm To Table.”

Patti Smith and Her Band have done it all. For the uninitiated (where have you been?!), Smith is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a New York icon, and brought the world the seminal tracks “Because The Night,” “Dancing Barefoot,” and “People Have The Power.”

Because of problems of health, my sister can't go to the show on this Saturday in Anvers (Antwerp) in Belgium.

She has one ticket to sell. The price was 274 euros but she sells it for 220 euros.

MADRID (AP) — Spanish women highlighted the Laureus World Sports Awards as the national soccer team was chosen world team of the year for 2023 and Aitana Bonmatí was picked as the best sportswoman on Monday.

Novak Djokovic was the sportsman of the year at the ceremony in Madrid, and American gymnast Simone Biles received the comeback of the year award.

Real Madrid forward Jude Bellingham earned the breakthrough of the year, and Rafael Nadal won the sport for good award thanks to his foundation.

True crime podcasts are popular in the U.S., particularly among women and those with less formal education

True crime stands out as the most common topic of top-ranked podcasts in the United States, according to a new Pew Research Center study . So who, exactly, listens to true crime podcasts?

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to explore U.S. adults’ views of and experiences with podcasts as a part of the news and information landscape.

To examine the ways Americans get news and information in a digital age, the Center surveyed 5,132 U.S. adults from Dec. 5 to 11, 2022. Everyone who completed the survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the  ATP’s methodology .

In the questionnaire, U.S. adults who said they are currently listening to at least one podcast were asked in an open-ended question to write in the name of the podcast that they listen to most. If respondents answered with the names of more than one podcast, only the first one was coded. In total, 1,563 open-end responses were coded.

Here are  the questions used  in the survey, along with responses, and  its methodology .

As part of the study, the Center also took a close look at key characteristics of top-ranked podcasts. Researchers identified these top podcasts by analyzing daily lists of the top 200 podcasts on Apple Podcasts and Spotify from April 1 to Sept. 30, 2022. The average chart position of each podcast that appeared on either list was calculated, and the top 300 podcasts from each site were included as top podcasts. Researchers identified 451 top podcasts by combining these lists so that podcasts that were among the top 300 on both sites were not counted twice.

A team of trained researchers then analyzed these 451 podcasts to determine podcast affiliation, topic, format and other key characteristics of each podcast. Additional data on episode length and frequency was analyzed after collecting data on all episodes published in 2022 through the Spotify and Apple Podcasts application programming interface.

Here are the detailed tables for this analysis of 451 top-ranked podcasts, and the methodology .

This is the latest analysis in Pew Research Center’s ongoing investigation of the state of news, information and journalism in the digital age, a research program funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, with generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Overall, 34% of U.S. adults who have listened to a podcast in the past year say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime, according to a 2022 Center survey . But some demographic groups are more likely than others to do so:

• Among U.S. podcast listeners, women are almost twice as likely as men to regularly listen to true crime podcasts (44% vs. 23%).
• Podcast listeners with less formal education are more likely than those with higher levels of education to listen to shows about true crime. Looking at podcast listeners who have a high school diploma or less, 45% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. A third of podcast listeners with some college education say the same, as do 27% of those who have at least a bachelor’s degree. This pattern persists even when accounting for age.
• While women are more likely to listen to true crime podcasts overall, women with lower levels of formal education are the most likely to do so. A majority (57%) of women with a high school diploma or less say they regularly listen to true crime podcasts, compared with 34% of men with the same education level and 36% of women with a college degree.
• Younger podcast listeners are more likely than the oldest listeners to report tuning in to shows about true crime. Among U.S. podcast listeners ages 18 to 29, 41% regularly listen to true crime podcasts. This compares with 15% of listeners ages 65 and older.

The Center’s new study finds that true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts – defined as those with the highest average daily rankings on Apple’s and Spotify’s lists of top podcasts in a six-month period in 2022. Almost a quarter (24%) of these top podcasts are primarily about true crime.

True crime podcasts are often investigations into murders, scandals and other criminal events. Serial, which helped to popularize the genre , is a series that provides in-depth investigations into particular crimes or events. Due to its popularity, Serial is often credited for drawing national attention to the conviction of Adnan Syed.

Other top-ranked podcasts in this genre include 20/20, Crime Junkie, Dateline NBC, and My Favorite Murder. Crime Junkie and Dateline NBC are among the most popular podcasts cited by podcast listeners who gave a name for the show they tune in to most – 1% named each of these podcasts.

While true crime is the most common topic among top-ranked podcasts, it is not the most popular topic Americans report listening to, according to the Center’s recent survey . About a third of podcast listeners in the United States (34%) say they regularly listen to podcasts about true crime.

Other topics – such as comedy (47%) and entertainment, pop culture and the arts (46%) – are more popular than true crime.

While the Center’s survey did not specifically ask why podcast listeners turn to specific topics such as true crime, we can look at the reasons that people said they listen to podcasts in general – and among those who said the podcast they listen to most is true crime.

Of those who said their main podcast is about true crime, the most common major reasons for listening were for entertainment (85%) and to have something to listen to while doing something else (84%). They were less likely to cite reasons like learning, hearing other people’s opinions, or staying up to date about current events.
