Our History

The story of beer dates back to the ancient tombs of Egypt and pre-dates the wine industry in South Africa. Our story began on the banks of the Liesbeek River where Pieter Visagie first brewed beer in 1658. Mariendahl Brewery in Newlands. Upon his death, Anders Ohlsson was first in a succession of proud brewers to nurture the noble traditions and whose legacy is enjoyed to this day. On the playing fields of Newlands, history and the record books keep being re-written. And every sip of the way, our legendary beers have stood testimony to the fact that when you spend so much time practicing, you eventually get rather good at it.

About Newlands Brewery Tour

The Newlands Brewery in Cape Town was established in 1820, making it the oldest working brewery in South Africa. More than this, it produces some excellent beers and invites anyone over the age of 18 years to visit the premises, learn more about the process and ingredients, and sample a few excellent brews.

This National Heritage Site is full of interesting finds and delicious flavours. It produces nine different beers, which have become very popular amongst the local beer-lovers and international visitors alike. A tour of the brewery means learning the story behind the label, getting a sneak-peek into modern brewing techniques, and appreciating the time-honoured craft of beer making. The tour ends with a full beer tasting in the historic pub of the brewery, where a good few pints can be enjoyed amongst friends. The tour takes about an hour and includes the beer tasting and two free drinks per person.

The brewery shop stocks plenty of beery merchandise. These are fantastic keepsakes in memory of your tour, and they make great gifts for friends and family. This shop includes goodies with SAB and Newlands Brewery branding. It is open on Tuesday to Friday from 09h00 to 16h00, and on Saturday from 09h00 to 14h00.

Newlands Brewery is committed to minimising their footprint, and makes every effort to be as environmentally-friendly as possible. They actively recycle and reuse as much as possible, and always respect their resources enough to be wise with them.

Only people over the age of 18 are permitted to do the tour. Comfortable flat shoes are a must and the brewery is, unfortunately, not accessible to those in wheelchairs or making use of any kind of walking aid (including a walking stick).

Tours of Newlands Brewery are a fabulous way to combine culture, history and some of South Africa’s finest craft beers in one fun adventure.

I have done the tour of the Newlands Brewery on a number of occasions and have found the tour to be interesting, informative and fresh each time. The guides have a wealth of knowledge and interesting facts about one of the oldest breweries in SA. I recommend the tour as a relaxing, informative and pleasurable outing, however, I suggest that all visitors take some snacks and if possible, arrange a dedicated driver for safety. Thanks Alexis for all the fun times at SAB Miller Newlands, now, if only the locals would embrace them openly as the brewery was there first.....

this is a fascinating and interesting tour not known to many. the brewery is a marvel made up of history and innovation. end the tour in a pub which once could have been a dungeon. recommend to all

So enjoy being surprised and the brewery tour followed by the beer paring certainly did that. The retired brewer gave an excellent and informative presentation of the history and processes of the brewery. I am not a beer drinker but learnt so much and change many mis-perceptions. The four course meal by Creative Catering was superb and the dessert was outstanding. Interesting that Black Label and glazed gammon did pair so well. Thoroughly enjoyable evening and highly recommended.

I think this place is one of Cape Town's undiscovered wonders and a playground for Beer Lovers and historians alike. I went alone and was surprised to get this magnificent tour all to myself. They have an amazing setup, but it seems many tourists don't know about it. The brewery itself is huge and absolutely outstanding and the history behind it is impressive. It's a great way to spend an afternoon, plus get some tastings of delicious, fresh beer. Call ahead or go online to book a reservation in advanced.

We joined the tour and we learnt so much about this iconic brewery in Newlands. All the beer is made from natural water from Table Mountain. Wow. They still have the same number of staff as 100 years ago. Such a nice tour. With drink afterwards in the pub downstairs. Do it!

We visited the brewery on a Groupon voucher. The tour was well managed and very informative. The tasting afterwards was very enjoyable and the social get together in the pub area after very good fun. Well recommended.
