Over the years, we've shared this special place - and our knowledge of it - with tens of thousands of people. Whether you're interested in geology or seabirds, or if you just fancy being out on the water for a few hours, we look forward to welcoming you aboard and hope you'll enjoy the trip.

The Isle of Staffa – off the west coast of Scotland – is a beautiful uninhabited island, famous for its dramatic basalt columns, sea caves and bird life. Over the years it has captivated thousands of people including Johnson & Boswell, Queen Victoria, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, Jules Verne and Joseph Banks. Fingal’s Cave is always splendid and atmospheric with its basalt columns formed during a period of volcanic activity 59 million years ago. Puffins can be seen ashore in season as well as shags, oystercatchers and black guillemots. We often see guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, kittiwakes, shearwaters gannets, great skuas and other birds from the boat. If you’re lucky, you might see a passing otter, porpoise, dolphin, basking shark or whale! The trip lasts approximately three hours and you can disembark at Fionnphort or Iona. Staffa Trips leave Iona and Fionnphort twice daily (1st April-late October) and we aim to give you at least 1 hour ashore.

  • Geology Staffa was formed during a period of intense volcanic activity some 59 million years ago. Slow cooling of basaltic lava cause the resulting rock to have a polygonal joint pattern. Most of the columns are 5 or 6 sided and free standing.

Image of a Puffin on the island of Staffa

  • Seabirds The area in which we operate is home to a wide variety of seabirds including Cormorants, Shags, Guillemots, Razorbills, and Shearwaters. Puffins nest on Staffa each year, arriving in early April and leaving again at the end of July. They can often be seen ashore at close quarters during May, June and July.

Seals basking on rocks, seen on a visit to Staffa

  • Marine Life The water around Staffa is home to a wide variety of marine life and we see common seals on most trips. Porpoises and Dolphins are seen fairly regularly, while Minke Whales and Basking Sharks visit when the water is warmest in June, July and August.

Iolaire of Iona, the boat which takes visitors to Staffa

  • Our Boat Staffa Trips’ boat, Iolaire of Iona is a beautiful wooden boat, purpose built to take visitors to Staffa. She’s constructed from larch planks on an oak frame in the carvel style and powered by two diesel engines. She’s lifted out of the water each winter and inspected twice yearly by the MCA.

About this place

Escape the everyday! This little island (½ mile long and ¼ mile wide) off the west coast of Scotland looks like it may be from a different planet. Its hexagonal columns were formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions and a vast blanket of lava that spread into the Atlantic Ocean. Years of waves crashing against these columns created the magnificent Fingal’s Cave.

Staffa was hardly known until 1772, when the botanist Joseph Banks highlighted the wild, natural beauty of the island. It soon became a must-see location. Famous visitors have included Queen Victoria, Lord Tennyson, Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson and John Keats; all fell under the island’s spell.

Staffa came into the care of the National Trust for Scotland in 1986, a gift from John Elliott, Jr, of New York in honour of his wife Elly’s birthday.

Staffa was designated a National Nature Reserve in 2001.

Day 1 – Edinburgh to Oban

Departing from your hotel in Edinburgh, we travel to the largest equine statues in the world, The Kelpies. Towering at over 100 feet, the magical Kelpies, Duke and Baron, dominate the skyline above the Helix Park. They are impressively illuminated at night, adding just that little extra magic.

Discover the Royal Palace, The Royal Chapel and Great Halls, before having a traditional Scottish Pub lunch in the Trossachs National Park.

After traversing through the picturesque highland town of Callander, we stop at Kilmahog to feed the hairy heilan’ coos “Hamish” and “Honey Dubh”. Our journey continues on through Argyle, to Saint Conan’s, Kirk where we can marvel at the amazing architectural delights of this historic church, before heading on to Oban (the gateway to the Hebrides), for our first overnight stop.

Day 2 – Oban to the Isle of Mull

Taking an early morning ferry from Oban, we sail by the daunting Duart Castle, on the western shores of Mull, before disembarking at Craignure. We then take a short drive to view the picturesque pastel coloured houses in Tobermory, the capital of Mull.

We will have enough time to sample some local sea food, or just take a leisurely stroll through Tobermory, as our road trip takes us on to Calgary Bay. It is thought that Calgary in Canada, was named after this beautiful sandy Scottish seaside bay.

We then take the road south for a brief visit to the mighty Duart Castle, home to the Chief of Clan MacLean. The recently renovated Duart Castle, offers visitors self-guided tours of this magnificent historical fortress, that guards the Sound of Mull. Make sure to visit the castle’s well stocked gift shop.

Our last leg of today’s journey, take us south to Fionnphort, on the Ross of Mull for our overnight stay.

Day 3 – Boat trip from Mull to the Isle of Staffa and Iona

Make sure to visit Fingal’s Cave, before we sail to the sacred Isle of Iona, the cradle of Christianity and ancient burial site of Scottish kings.

After lunching in a local hostelry, we take the short walk to Iona Abbey. Like pilgrims before us, we discover where St Columba and his companions introduced Christianity to Scotland.

Late afternoon sees us take the short ferry journey, crossing  the sound of Iona to Fionnphort on the Ross of Mull, for our last overnight stay .

  • Guanjin77 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wildlife watching at its best I recently took the 6-hour Staffa and Treshnish Isles Wildlife Tour with Staffa Tours, and it was an incredible experience, deserving a 10/10 rating! The tour covered two islands, starting with Staffa for an hour and then moving on to Lunga where we spent two hours on shore. The highlight for me was watching the numerous puffins at Lunga—they were absolutely delightful. The Staffa Tours team was very professional. They made sure to check in with us regularly, asking if we had any questions or needed anything, which made the trip feel very personalized and cared for. The boat itself was modern and comfortable, equipped with both upper and lower decks, and importantly, a restroom. Keep in mind there are no facilities on the islands, so plan accordingly. The tour was perfectly on time, from start to finish, which is always appreciated. I highly recommend Staffa Tours if you're looking to explore these beautiful islands and enjoy some fantastic wildlife watching! Read more Written May 6, 2024

  • Constructionman53 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Puffins Galore We did the tour to see Fingal's Cave on Staffa and the Puffins on Treshnish on 1st May. A great day out, very well organised and informative (thanks to Paul). We saw everything we wanted to, Puffins galore. I particularly liked the way the mooring and disembarking/embarking was handled by the crew. whilst I am reasonable agile they handled passengers who were less able courteously and in a helpful manner. The vessel, Angus, appeared well maintained, clean and at no point overcrowded. Our thanks to all the Staffa personnel. Read more Written May 5, 2024
  • KellyAdl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing adventure! Today my sister & I went on the Staffa and Treshnish Isles Wildlife Tour. It was AMAZING. The boat leaves from Tobermory, and we headed out with high hopes of seeing puffins and other birds and sea life. The boat is comfortable and big. The captain was really informative and let us know of where we were going and what was going to happen. He decided to go to Staffa first based on the conditions. There is an hour given to explore Fingal’s Cave and climb to the top if you want to. I personally did not get off the boat at this point because I’m scared of heights and had already been to Staffa - however this turned out to be wonderful because while we were on the boat waiting, we saw hundreds of puffins flying around the area. Next we went to Lunga where we were going to see puffins close up! This was absolutely amazing. We were blessed with a beautiful day and once we got off the boat and climbed up to a big grassy area we had two hours to sit and watch these beautiful little creatures. This was an absolutely amazing day. The crew on the boat were informative and wonderful. But it must also be said that we were also lucky enough to have two volunteers helping out on the day. Stuart has to be mentioned specifically because he was absolutely brilliant. He knows so much about puffins and engaged with every single passenger on the boat. He came off the boat at both stops and filled us in with so much information about puffins. He really did make this trip memorable. Read more Written April 27, 2024

  • dwell88 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A brilliant day out We were fortunate to get on the tour as its so busy, we were picked up on Iona, then made a quick stop on Mull, then we were off to Staffa. The boat was comfortable and the staff gave all the information very well, after reading about all the birds we could encounter, we got to Staffa, the staff very kindly offered a jacket, as it was going to be a wet one. But the weather didnt matter as the isl of Staffa was quite breathtaking , our grandson loved the face etched into the rocks!. Then we saw a puffin on our return. A fantastic day out that we wont forget in a hurry. Thank you for a great welcome and taking great care of us. I would highly recommend the tour, the crystal clear waters made me think of Porto fino ! Stunning! Read more Written April 1, 2024

  • TheMysteryShoppers 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent Day Out to Staffa & Iona from Craignure (using public transport) In addition to mirroring the comments of all the other reviewers about the excellent tours, I just wanted to add some info which I hope will be of use to future customers. If you are stopping in or around Craignure on Mull then it is perfectly possible to organise the Staffa Tours "early bird" trip to Staffa and then Iona using the bus service from Craignure Ferry Terminal. This is during the summer timetable only. We wanted to do this as a more relaxed option in preference to taking our motorhome on the single track route (which has a few challenging bits on it as you will find out). At the time of the review (during summer period only) the Staffa Tours website lists the boat trip to Staffa starting at 9:30 from Iona and picking up at Fionnphort around 9:45 The reassuring news is that the Staffa Tours crew wait for the first bus from Craignure to get to Fionnphort before departing. The bus also doesn't depart from Craignure until the Oban Ferry has arrived too (where lost of the Staffa Tours customers will arrive from) So the bus service from Craignure Ferry Terminal is the 96 service run by West Coast Tours. It leaves at 8:25 but I would advise getting there ahead of the ferry so you can get the best birdseye seats - upstairs at the front. The bus is huge double decker coach which you'll see has a very interesting trip down the single track route. The bus will take contactless payments. I think it was around £17 a return ticket. Journey should be just over an hour. Bus drivers very chatty and give light hearted commentary on the way there. The early bird tour is good as you're on Staffa ahead of other tourists. It's also great timing to get dropped back on Iona for a wander round the shops, a spot of lunch or pint at the hotels and wander on the beautiful beaches. The return buses from Fionnphort leave l5:20 and 17:45. The ferry from Iona is only about 10 mins so just make sure you plan it right to get back to the bus you want. Customers on the official organised Early Bird tour from Oban will be getting the 15:20 back so may be busier the later one. Read more Written October 23, 2021

The staff were lovely and advised us where to sit to avoid getting splashed! • X1404DRmatthewb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Thrilling Experience We took the afternoon tour to Staffa Island on a lovely clear sunny afternoon from Fionnphort and took the top deck to get maximum views of the surrounding Islands (Iona etc.) The boat rides the Atlantic swell which can be sizeable waves, this makes it more of an adventure than just a trip. After a 20 minute sail the boat reaches Staffa Island and docks at a small concrete jetty where you are left to visit Fingals Cave or explore the lovely grassy upland. you get 1hour so plenty of time. The cave it's self most be one of the wonders of the world and quite spectacular as the waves swell up inside it. It also inspired the composer Mendelssohn to write the Hebrides Overture. The top of the island is also beautiful with fantastic views on a clear day but the Puffins had long gone as we took the trip on 25th of September. On the way Back the Atlantic swell was doing just that so it was waterproofs all around unless you choose to sit inside, but for the full experience we took the lower back deck which was a roller coaster of a ride! The trip ended for us in (Iona) as the boat heads there before going back to Fionnphort. The crew we're friendly and informative, and very experienced. A fantastic experience for a very reasonable price Read more Written October 6, 2021

The island of Staffa is stunning whether you are viewing the scenery all around you, the wildlife in the sea or on land, or the stunning structures that make up the island and the incredible Fingals cave. It’s about a 30 min crossing from Mull to Staffa.. it can get choppy.. which isn’t nice but the team does everything they can to look after you and it is so worth it. If it was a longer trip, I would be wary, but for such a short crossing any upset is worth it. On a calm day it must be an absolute delight. That said, our day was a combination of rough sea but blue skies, which have everything this vibrant fully of energy look, so it was kind of worth it, thanks again Read more Written October 2, 2021

Read more Written 6 May 2024

Read more Written 5 May 2024
  • KellyAdl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing adventure! Read more Written 27 April 2024

Isle of mull daytrip: staffa and puffin-watching on lunga.

The view of Fingal's Cave on Staffa from the water in Scotland.

I planned my entire trip to the Isle of Mull around one experience – or really, just around a couple of hours. I wanted to see puffins on Lunga, and so off I went to Scotland in June. The best time to see puffins is between April and July, before they fly off in August. Staffa Tours combined the best of both worlds with a visit to out-of-this-world Staffa, and the Treshnish Isles for puffin-watching. It was truly the most incredible day of my life!

A Staffa Tours boat in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

Departing the Isle of Mull

Our Staffa Tours trip departed from Tobermory at 9:45am. We sailed across the Sound of Mull to Kilchoan (on the Scottish mainland), which only took about 15 minutes. From there, we sailed towards Staffa. It was awesome getting to see Ardnamurchan Lighthouse in the distance—this is the most western point of Scotland and of Britain in general! We also got to see Calgary Bay in the distance – I had swum here just the night before! Thankfully, the waters were pretty calm. Trips can be canceled due to bad weather, extreme wind, or rough seas, but I had nothing but blue skies and perfect conditions on my trip! You can sometimes see dolphins or porpoises in the water here – we saw a porpoise very briefly before it disappeared.

Views from the Sound of Mull to land.

Our boat sailed through the channel between several of the Treshnish Isles before making the journey to Staffa. We could see puffins in the water, on shore, and flying around! But it was time to explore Staffa first.

The isle of Staffa, off of Mull, in Scotland.

Exploring Staffa

If you’re not visiting Lunga or any of the Treshnish Isles, you still have a chance to spot puffins on Staffa. But there’s enough to keep you busy for a few hours if you’re not into birdwatching. There are plenty of walking paths that criss-cross over the island – the views towards Mull are stunning.

The view of Fingal's Cave on Staffa from the water in Scotland.

Fingal’s Cave is by far the best thing to see on Staffa, around Mull, and in the Inner Hebrides in general! While its origin is shrouded in myth and legend, seeing the blue waters lap around the hexagonal basalt columns is simply spectacular. It reminded me so much of the Giant’s Causeway and parts of Iceland ! I loved getting to see Fingal’s Cave up close, but it was also great to see it from the water as we sailed up to Staffa.

A closeup, detailed photo of a puffin's face, eye, and colorful beak on Lunga.

Puffin Heaven on Lunga

The island of Lunga, the largest of the Treshnish Isles, is famous for its wildlife and birdwatching. In particular, it is one of the best places to see puffins in the entirety of the UK. While yes, there are lots of other birds (especially if you walk out to Harp Rock), people come here to see the puffins. I planned this entire trip to Scotland to see puffins on Lunga, and I was not disappointed.

A puffin on Lunga, the Treshnish Isles.

You can get SO close to puffins, who seem very unbothered by people watching them and snapping photos. As in, you can be just a few feet away and close enough to take selfies with them!!

Three puffins, one squaking, on Lunga, the Treshnish Isles.

I could have spent all day just watching them and taking pictures. They are so freaking cute I just can’t get over it!!! Some of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken in my entire life were of the puffins on Lunga. I also saw more expensive camera gear here in one place than I ever have before. This is such an incredible opportunity to get to see puffins up close. If you are remotely interested in birdwatching or photography, or you just think puffins are cute and you love them, you can’t miss this. We had a full two hours on Lunga to puffin-watch to our hearts content. I don’t know if I have ever been so happy!

Back to Tobermory

With most of the days’ excitement over and done with, the journey back to Tobermory on Mull isn’t all that exciting. There are still beautiful views though, and who knows you might get a dolphin greeting as well! We got back to Tobermory right on time, at 4:30pm. It is a full day tour, but even if you’re short on time on your trip to the Isle of Mull, it’s worth it.

You can find out everything you need to know about Staffa Tours on their website . I really recommend this company, I had such a great day and all the staff were really nice and good at pointing out wildlife and landmarks to us on our sailing!

staffa tours isle of mull

If you’re headed to the Isle of Mull, you can’t miss the trip to Staffa. And if you’re visiting between April and July – or if you’ve planned your entire trip around this! – you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see the puffins on Lunga. This was simply one of the best days and such an amazing experience!

Have you ever visited Staffa or Lunga? Did you see the puffins?
