billabong tour

Full story on the way this evening

The surf ended-up pumping 3-5’+ for a large part of the day and performances rose to the occasion.

JJF pulls off one of the best Houdini acts at Backdoor EVER in final heat of the day.

Gabriel Medina taken out by Jack Robinson in heat7.

EARLIER UPDATE

Men’s round of 32 kicked off the day with the former World Champ Italo Ferreira and Maui’s rookie Ian Gentil! 945am update: Ian upsets Italo!

We will do some overlapping heats to get more heats done during swell and get to the Quarters.

Women have the day off.

The NW is super fun at 3-5′ but still inconsistent with light ENE trades filling to fresh paces under cloudy skies. The sandbar is still there for big finishes and added excitement. A new NNW fills Thursday to solid 4-6′ so watch for a couple full straight days of comp! SNN

PRIOR UPDATES BELOW

230PM Monday: Women’s Semi’s postponed due to inconsistent slow arrival on new WNW…

Women’s Quarterfinals hit the water at 12:30pm (30 min heats) and finished at just after 230pm.

Monday’s 3-5′ WNW-NW was only 2.5′ at dawn but is now 3′ occ. 4′ at lunch.

The NW buoy is at 1pm… 5-6′ 16 sec. Hanalei is 3′ 18 sec and Waimea only 2.5′ at 18 sec…still building.

These long periods are making for challenging waves as the sets are very inconsistent and heave with a tendency to wall up and jack more.

Trades are decent. But very windy ENE trades all week. In fact, 15-35mph are expected Wed nite through Friday.

The new NW swell should be 4-6′ Tuesday with likely continuation of the event for both Women and Men! SNN

We would like to thank GoWhereWhen.com community member Jackson Groves for his review and amazing shot from the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

You can see more of Jackson's travel adventures on his excellent travel blog Journey Era here .

Each year as winter approaches, the North Shore of Oahu receives some booming waves and is home to the Billabong Pipeline Masters. This surfing event is held annually and is the final stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. The competition takes place at Banzai Pipeline beach on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, USA. Often the world's best surfer is crowned as the champion at this event. The event first rant in 1971 and the top 34 surfers from the WSL compete in the event each year for a share of the US 525,000 prize money. The event runs from the 9-19 of December each year. Spectators gather in thousands on the shore to watch the surfers carve through barrels and compete in head-to-head battles on their way through multiple rounds to reach the finals and compete for the crown. In a relaxed atmosphere on the beach, there is no entrance fee, vendors, or marketing. This keeps true to the core of surfing and makes it one of the purest sporting events in the world. The sound of the booming waves sends a shiver down the spine of the spectators as they cheer on local favorites and listen to the commentary over the loudspeaker. Waves can be well over 30ft and crash down onto a shallow reef, making this one of the most dramatic and dangerous breaks in the world.

Day 2 Recap: History Made As First Women's Championship Tour Event At Pipe Underway

Jake Howard

Sunday, January 30, 2022 Updated: Monday, January 31, 2022

It was a moment generations in the making, but when Sally Fitzgibbons , Courtney Conlogue and Molly Picklum paddled out for the first heat of the Billabong Pro Pipeline history was made. The first full-length women's Championship Tour event at Pipeline was officially underway.

By the second heat of the day, Kauai's Malia Manuel made a little bit more history, locking in the first excellent scoring ride for a Backdoor drainer.

"To be honest I was super stressed, I wanted to alleviate that by catching a few waves and kind just getting the ball rolling," said Manuel. "I've spent a lot of time out there this winter, it's my first real winter here at Pipeline and I had such a good crew and great support. It's really hard to get waves out there to practice so it doesn't matter how much time you spend out there, sometimes it all comes down to being in the right spot."

The next heat was stacked with talent, featuring defending World Champ Carissa Moore , HIC Pipe Pro winner Moana Jones Wong and Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy , it was an exhibition of tube-riding at the world's most iconic reef.

"I started surfing Pipe when I was 12, and I've been coming here consistently since I was 18," said Wong, who narrowly advanced over Moore. "Surfing against Carissa pushes me to be better because she's the best in the world. I look up to her and I want to surf as good as she can."

Two-time World Champ Tyler Wright and CT rookie India Robinson had a walk-through heat as Stephanie Gilmore wasn't able to compete as she entered the WSL COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols. Wright pulled the trigger first with a good tube on Backdoor for an early lead and solidified with perfect positioning on a second right-hand barrel to build momentum and confidence heading into the third round.

"The most exciting thing for me this year is seeing all the rookies," said Wright. "It's been a long time since we've had such fresh faces on the tour, and it makes me emotional just seeing how they're coming in and making the most of it. It feels incredible to be a part of this sport and to be a woman in sport right now."

Replacing Gilmore in the Elimination Round was Bethany Hamilton , who made the most of the opportunity. Besting Hennessy and Caroline Marks , who's now been knocked out of the event, Hamilton's experience and Pipe prowess were on full display.

"I'm so stoked to be here," said Hamilton. "I'm in full mommy mode lately but trying to keep my surfing shape, so it's amazing to have the opportunity to be here today. There is also such great energy on the beach, everybody showing love."
