Cruise's parents divorced when he was 11, and the children moved with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky, and then to Glen Ridge, New Jersey, after she remarried. Like his mother and three sisters, Cruise suffered from dyslexia, which made academic success difficult for him. He excelled in athletics, however, and considered pursuing a career in professional wrestling until a knee injury sidelined him during high school.

At age 14, Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with thoughts of becoming a priest, but he left after a year. When he was 16, a teacher encouraged him to participate in the school's production of the musical Guys and Dolls . After Cruise won the lead of Nathan Detroit, he found himself surprisingly at home on the stage, and a career was born.

'Taps,' 'The Outsiders'

Cruise set a 10-year deadline for himself in which to build an acting career. He left school and moved to New York City, struggling through audition after audition before landing an appearance in 1981's Endless Love , starring Brooke Shields. Around this same time, he snagged a small role in the military school drama Taps (1981), co-starring Sean Penn .

His role in Taps was upgraded after director Harold Becker saw Cruise's potential, and his performance caught the attention of a number of critics and filmmakers. In 1983, Cruise appeared in Francis Ford Coppola 's The Outsiders , which also starred Emilio Estevez , Matt Dillon and Rob Lowe —all prominent members of a group of young actors the entertainment press dubbed the "Brat Pack." The film was not well received, but it allowed Cruise to work with an acclaimed director on a high-profile project.

'Risky Business'

His next film, Risky Business (1983), grossed $65 million. It also made Cruise a highly recognizable actor — thanks in no small part to a memorable scene of the young star dancing in his underwear.

In 1986, after a two-year hiatus, the budding actor released the big-budget fantasy film Legend , which did poorly at the box office. That same year, however, Cruise's A-list status was confirmed with the release of Top Gun , which co-starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan . The testosterone-fueled action-romance, set against the backdrop of an elite naval flight school, became the highest-grossing film of 1986.

'The Color of Money,' 'Rain Man' and 'Born on the Fourth of July'

Cruise followed the tremendous success of Top Gun with a string of both critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. He first starred in The Color of Money (1986) with co-star Paul Newman , and then went on to work with Dustin Hoffman on Rain Man (1988). Cruise's next role, as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in the biopic Born on the Fourth of July (1989), earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'A Few Good Men,' 'The Firm' and 'Interview with a Vampire'

In 1992, Cruise proved once more that he could hold his own opposite a screen legend when he co-starred with Jack Nicholson in the military courtroom drama A Few Good Men . The film grossed more than $15 million its first weekend and earned Cruise a Golden Globe nomination. He continued to demonstrate his success as a leading man with The Firm (1993) and Interview with a Vampire (1994), which co-starred Brad Pitt.

'Mission: Impossible,' 'Jerry McGuire'

Next, Cruise hit the big screen with two huge hits—the $64 million blockbuster Mission: Impossible (1996), which the star also produced, and the highly acclaimed Jerry McGuire (1996), directed by Cameron Crowe. For the latter, Cruise earned a second Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for Best Actor.

'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Magnolia'

Cruise and then-wife Kidman spent much of 1997 and 1998 in England shooting Eyes Wide Shut , an erotic thriller that would be director Stanley Kubrick 's final film. The movie came out in the summer of 1999 to mixed reviews, but that year Cruise enjoyed greater success with the release of Magnolia . His performance as a self-confident sex guru in the ensemble film earned him another Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

'Vanilla Sky,' 'The Last Samurai'

Cruise then starred in the long-awaited smash hit Mission: Impossible 2 in 2000, alongside Anthony Hopkins , Thandie Newton and Ving Rhames. In 2002, he starred in Vanilla Sky , his second collaboration with Crowe, as well as Steven Spielberg 's Minority Report . The following year, Cruise traveled to Australia to shoot the $100 million war epic The Last Samurai, which earned him another Golden Globe nomination.

'War of the Worlds'

Tom Cruise turned 61 on July 3 and is back – with all his teeth and charm more or less intact – on the big screen in Mission: Impossible. Dead Reckoning, Part 1 , directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the seventh installment in a franchise that Brian De Palma began in 1996. Cruise, producer and hero of one of the most popular spy sagas in movie history, has since made his mark. $3.5 billion in box office receipts and 27 years later, this "old-school" franchise is one of the few that can hold its own against the superhero steamroller that has crushed Hollywood in one of the artistically and intellectually poorest moments in its history.

The arrival on the silver screen of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF), an elite autonomous US intelligence service, and its agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) was no coincidence, at a time when the James Bond saga was drifting in limbo. Roger Moore, who bent the character towards imperial cool, retired in 1985; his successor, Timothy Dalton, weighed the series down in two films, and Bond disappeared in 1989 until the arrival of Pierce Brosnan in 1995.

Cruise slipped his foot in the door and released the first installment of what looked like it could be a possible spy franchise a year later. As with any ascension to the throne, the first step is to kill the father, especially as Cruise himself was forced to build his life around the absence of his own.

Oedipal role-playing

There are two sides to the story. The first involves Bond. Far from the phlegm and irony of Moore, who crosses minefields and women's beds with a flower in his buttonhole, Cruise embodies a tortured, sacrificial, solitary hero, invested entirely in his redemptive gesture. Mission: Impossible is James Bond redeemed by Jesus Christ. John Woo made no mistake when he placed Cruise like a Christ on the cross on the side of a mountain he has undertaken to climb, at the start of the second impossible mission.

Another important aspect to terminate was that of the popular TV series (1966-1973, then 1988-1990) on which the film is based. Cruise and De Palma suggested that Peter Graves reprise the character of Jim Phelps (the historic head of the IMF unit) in the film, but assigned him the role of traitor, paving the way for agent Ethan Hunt who, in good Freudian logic, would unmask him by taking on his features. Offended, Graves refused. The role was given to Jon Voight, and the filiation, ipso facto, was definitively severed.

Cruise had been planning this Oedipal role-play for a long time. He first came to public attention at the age of 21 in Paul Brickman's 1983 comedy Risky Business , in which – while his parents are away – he plays a student who sets up a brothel in the family house to pay off his father's Porsche, which has drowned in the lake. Three years later, he won international acclaim with Tony Scott's Top Gun (1986), in which he succeeds where his father – who had died in action – had failed, playing a rebellious fighter pilot who single-handedly saves the country from the Communist threat.

T om Cruise, the legendary actor who needs no introduction, has done a plethora of movies over the years. From starring in iconic franchises like Top Gun  and  Mission: Impossible,  Cruise has developed a knack for doing all his death-defying stunts by himself.

The actor, who reprised his role in  Top Gun: Maverick, has surely earned the love of the world. However, there are some people who think that Cruise is getting a little old for the movies. Cruise’s co-star Glen Powell, who has been rumored to take the lead role in the  Top Gun  franchise, stated one iconic line to shut everyone up about Cruise and his age!

In the 2022 film  Top Gun: Maverick,  Powell portrayed the role of Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin. Although he was a side character, Powell made his on-screen presence noticeable to the people. Taking to social media and the internet, fans now want Powell to replace Tom Cruise in the  Top Gun  franchise as the lead star!

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Powell himself said that there can never be another Tom Cruise or any of the iconic 80s and 90s actors in present times!

First of all, there will never be another Tom Cruise. That is a singular career in a singular moment, but also movie stars of the ’80s, ’90s, early 2000s, those will never be re-created.

Here comes the interesting part. With the box office collection of  Top Gun: Maverick  (and how good the film actually is), a third film has been greenlit and the story is in development as we speak. With Powell’s statements and his dedication to Tom Cruise, the third film in the franchise seems impossible without Tom Cruise.

In  Top Gun: Maverick,  we saw Tom Cruise train Rooster (Miles Teller) to become one of the elites at Top Gun. With Glen Powell’s  ‘Hangman’ coming in to save the show at the end of the film, it seems that the franchise isn’t done yet.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer was quick to talk about a potential third film in the franchise. With Glen Powell admitting that there can never be another Tom Cruise, Bruckheimer seemed to agree with those statements.

In an interview with ScreenRant, the producer revealed that there’s a story in progress and that Cruise has liked the idea so far.

It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. [Director] Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it.

He further continued,

But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.

So it seems that a third film will indeed take off pretty soon. However, the film could also mark the end of the Top Gun  franchise. With other franchises like  Fast & Furious  pushing sequels after sequel, it seems a good idea that Cruise’s franchise should know when to stop.
