C ontinue to Springbok and visit the Augrabies Falls National Park. Few sights are as awesome or a sound as deafening as water thundering down the 150 deep & 56 meter wide Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in a full flood. The Khoi (Bushman) people called it “Aukoerebis”, or place of Great Noise, as this powerful flow of water is unleashed from rocky surroundings characterized by the 18 km abyss of the Orange River Gorge.

Depart for Springbok, Namaqualand’s Wild Flower Capital. Springbok lies in a deep low plain between rugged mountains, about 600 km north of Cape Town.

It is the commercial and cultural center of Namaqualand

Copper was discovered on the farm Melkboschkuil in 1850 and a mine was established. The mine became the first commercial mine in South Africa, but was worked out by 1888.

In 1863 the town was mapped out and built around the copper mining industry.

Namaqualand is probably the world’s most awe inspiring floral kingdom . It is believed that “You have not seen any flowers until you have experienced the splendour of Namaqualand in full flower”. Each year in spring (July – September), Namaqualand hosts the most spectacular show on earth.

Situated in what is probably the most arid part of South Africa, the stark contrast between winter and spring can nowhere be more dramatic than in this part of the world.

A multi-coloured wildflower carpet grows almost overnight, enticing thousands of people to visit the area and share in the bounty of Mother Nature. One of the special sites to visit is the Goegap Nature Reserve.

We will spend part of the day at the Namaqualand National Park near Kammieskroon. A circular drive and a few short walking trails let you experience the incredible floral diversity of the area

8+ Stunning, Drool-Worthy Places to See the Namaqualand Flowers

October 3, 2020 by Lauren Melnick

Last Updated on March 21, 2024 by Lauren Melnick

namaqualand flowers

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the GREATEST wildflower show on Earth!

Namaqualand is a natural wonderland that’s sat on my South Africa bucket list for  yeeeeeears .

And with the world descending into chaos in 2020, for a second it looked like I’d have to put my daydreams of rolling around in daisies on hold.

Luckily, lockdown restrictions lifted in time for Carmen, Melanie and I to hop into our Ford Everest and put foot to reach Namaqualand in time for festivities.

With 3,500 flora species found nowhere else in the world, Namaqua doesn’t come to play.

The dull, arid region erupts into a sea of colour for as far as the eye can see.

And the result?

One of the best road trips in South Africa !

In this comprehensive guide, I’m spilling the seeds on everything you need to know for your Namaqualand flower viewing trip, from mistakes to avoid, how to get there, where to find the best displays of Namaqualand flowers and more!

Best Time to Visit Namaqualand for Flower Season

Rent a car , day trips & tours, getting to namaqualand from elsewhere in south africa, hantam national botanical gardens, more blooming flower routes in nieuwoudtville to check out: , where to stay in nieuwoudville, where to stay near biedou valley, where to stay near namaqualand national park, where to stay in springbok, where to stay near postberg, darling flower reserves, clanwilliam, namaqualand flowers map, assuming you’ll see the flowers the whole day, not driving with the sun behind you, starting with the north section of namaqualand at the end of the season, picking or trampling on the namaqualand flowers, not grabbing a map, not booking your namaqualand trip in advance, dressing for the weather back home, namaqualand wildflowers road trip budget.

orange wildflowers

Without a doubt, the best time to visit Namaqualand and see the blooming wildflowers is between August and September.

But that’s not a hard rule. It all depends on the weather.

When the rains arrive in the arid Northern Cape region, the desert landscape transforms into a kaleidoscope of colour.

If you can, time your trip to Namaqualand the week after a rainstorm . As long as the skies are clear, you’ll see the wildflowers out in full force!

Another thing you need to watch out for is a cold front. When windy Cape Town sends up icy winds and frost, it marks the end of wildflower season, and you’ll have to wait around for another 356 days.

We got extremely lucky and had outlandishly sunshiny good weather. It made our flower hunting easy as pie, and we didn’t have to look too hard to find layers upon layers of rainbow-hued flowers.

How to Get to Namaqualand

girl leaning out of car window

Before we jump into the best spots for frolicking with wildflowers in Namaqualand, how the heck do you get there?

And more importantly, WHERE exactly  is  this holy land of wildflowers?

Namaqualand is a desert region of the Northern Cape in South Africa , covering a whopping 440,000 square kilometres ?.

One of the best things about planning a Namaqualand road trip is that it’s incredibly easy to reach (as long as you don’t mind long drives).

The best way to get to Namaqualand is to hire a car. I would recommend our trusty Ford Everest if you want to tackle the 4×4 routes and sand dunes.

Otherwise, a 2WD is perfect if you’re sticking to paved roads.

Here’s how long it will take you to reach Namaqua National Park from South Africa’s three biggest cities:

  • Drive time from Johannesburg to Namaqualand: 12h 40 min (1,215km).
  • Drive time from Cape Town to Namaqualand: 5h 32 min (533km) .
  • Drive time from Durban to Namaqualand: 15h 56min (1,617km) .

Not keen to rent a car and get stuck as the designated driver? Sign up for a day trip or multi-day tour from Cape Town .

You won’t reach Namaqua National Park, but you can still see oodles of wildflowers along the West Coast and the Cederberg .

Getting to Namaqualand from other South African cities is pretty simple. Catch a flight to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) and rent a car.

You’ll dramatically cut down your travelling time and have more space in your itinerary to cover yourself with daisies.

Best Places to See Flowers in Namaqualand

wildflowers and windmill

The thing about Namaqualand is it’s ridiculously good looking. From the south to the north, the region is full of Insta-worthy spots where you can photograph and drool over every petal.

While it’s pretty hard to take a bad photo with wildflowers blooming as far as the eye can see, here are a few locations to keep on your radar:

Nieuwoudtville

church in Nieuwoudtville

Hands down, Nieuwoudtville is one of the best places to see flowers in Namaqualand. Only a 3hr 40min drive from Cape Town, you can spend days frolicking in all the different fields around the town.

At the  Hantam National Botanical Gardens  (aka the most photogenic spot in Niewoudtville), there are dozens of walking trails winding in between the flower beds.

Some of the trails are as short as 15-minutes, or you can tackle a massive 3-hour circuit and overdose on candy-coloured wildflowers.

NOTE: Attention to all drone pilots! Charge up those batteries and take to the skies! You can fly here without breaking the law.

Entrance:  R25.00

Opening Hours for Flower Season (August to October):  Monday to Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00

  • Matjiesfontein Flower Route
  • Papkuilsfontein Flower Route

Biedouw Valley

Biedouw Valley pass

Want to escape civilisation for a day or maybe a week? Come on down to Biedouw Valley.

It’s only 3h 20min drive from Cape Town , making it a doable day trip or the perfect weekend getaway .

Before you reach your accommodation for the night, you’ll drive along the scenic Biedouw Valley Pass (R364). It’s a stunning road that cuts throw the eastern edge of the Cederberg Mountains.

Brace yourself for a bird’s eye view of the flowers as you come down the pass!

I would highly recommend camping or staying in a chalet at Enjo Nature Farm . The property sits right on the Biedouw River, and it comes with a private wildflower field! If that’s not your vibe, here are some more recommendations:

  • Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat

Namaqua National Park

wildflowers in namaqua national park

Namaqua National Park  is the holy grail of wildflowers in South Africa.

It’s a biodiversity hotspot with the highest concentration of succulents in the world and more than 1,000 types of flowers that found nowhere else on Earth.

Each year, the northern region of the park erupts into a display of highlighter yellow and neon orange flowers.

It’s the best place to see Namaqualand flowers – if you don’t mind the drive.

Much like the Hantam Botanical Gardens, the national park has walking trails that wind around the fields of flowers with plenty of photo opportunities.

Look out for the windmills! There is one at the start of a walking path near the parking lot.

There’s also a fun photo opp in front of the picnic area next to reception. Follow the path, sit on the wooden fence, and towering yellow flowers surround you!

Entrance Fee:  R46.00 for South Africans | R92.00 for SADC Nationals | R92.00 for Internationals

Opening Hours:  08:00 to 17:00

For incredible Namaqualand accommodation (that’s super affordable as well), camp in the south region of the park. The sites are remote and next to a dramatic coastline.

Otherwise, here are some affordable accommodation options nearby in Hondeklipbaai:

  • Dogstone Cottage
  • Fisherman’s Cottage
  • Honnehokke Resort

We didn’t get a chance to go inside Goegap Nature Reserve (the rain caught up with us ?).

But if you’re in town for Namaqua National Park, drive an hour to Springbok and visit the famous 12,000-hectare wildflower reserve.

Inside is the 4,500 hectare Hester Malan Flower Garden . It has a 17-km loop for you to explore and see an astounding amount of Namakwa succulents and wildflowers.

And if you’re getting sick of the car, hop out and explore the Ian Myers Nature Walks . There are several circular trails inside the Goegap Reserve which will you get you up close and personal with the blooming splendour.

NOTE: There are camping spots and chalets inside the reserve! ? Entrance Fee: R30.00 Opening Hours: 08:00 to 16:30

  • Mountain View Guesthouse
  • Springbok Inn

Postberg in West Coast National Park

west coast national park

It’s no secret Cape Townians HATE driving.

If you’re a Joburg girl like me, you’ll know the pains of trying to get your Cape Town friends to visit you if you live more than 10-15 minutes away.

So if you’re not up for a 3-hour+ drive to see the Namaqualand daisies, take a drive up to West Coast National Park.

It’s a 1-hour drive from the Mother City and serves up spectacular views of sparkling blue a** water and colourful daisies.

During wildflower season, the Postberg section of the park is open to the public.

It’s one of the best places to sing “ Daisies ” by Katy Perry at the top of your lungs as your skip, hop and dance around the wildflowers (while sticking to the paths of course).

The only downside? West Coast National Park is super popular during flower season.

If you want to beat the crowds, set those alarm clocks! There’s often a line of cars waiting to get in from 9:00 or 10:00(especially on the weekends).

NOTE: Keep an eye out for zebras, tortoises and more Pokemon that call the park home! Entrance Fee: R64.00 for South Africans| R96.00 for SADC nationals | R96.00 for internationals Opening Hours: 10:00 to 16:00

Darling Flower Route

Once you’re done exploring West Coast National Park, hop on over to Darling.

It’s a 39-minutes drive and en-route back to the city or you can stay over in Langebaan , Darling or Yzerfontein .

Time your trip with the specular Darling Wildflower Show. It’s been an annual tradition since 1917.

If you’d rather wander through the  wildflower reserves , here are a few to add to your itinerary:

  • Contreberg Nature Reserve
  • Darling Renosterveld Reserve
  • Darling Groenkloof Reserve
  • Oudepost Wildflower Reserve
  • Tienie Versfeld Nature Reserve
  • Waylands Wildflower Reserve
  • Yzerfontein Urban Conservancy

girl sitting next to flower sign

Another little town you should add to your wildflower itinerary is Clanwilliam.

It’s 2h 30min from Cape Town , and you squeeze in a visit here while on your way back from Nieuwoudtville.

Clanwilliam’s crowning gem is the Ramskop Wildflower Garden . It houses a staggering 350+ species of wildflowers!

As you wander from one flower to the next, you’ll have spectacular views of Clanwilliam Dam and the mesmerising Cederberg Mountains in the distance.

If you plan your visit for August, you can also attend the Clanwilliam Flower Show! It exhibits over 400 species giving you the chance to see virtually every wildflower species in one area.

P.S. Clanwilliam is close to Biedou Valley. You can base yourself there and explore both areas.

Want all these flower spots in one convenient spot on all your devices? Here’s the ONLY map you need to track down those daisies and photograph them in all their rainbow glory!

Mistakes to Avoid When Seeing the Namaqualand flowers

namaqua national park

Wildflower season in Namaqualand is an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience IF you plan properly and avoid these newbie mistakes.

wildflowers in namaqua national park

There’s a common misconception out there that you can see the endless sea of wildflowers as soon as the sun pops over the horizon.

This is not the case at all!

You need clear skies as well as dry, sunny weather. The day temperature needs to be around 18°C minimum, and the flowers only open from 10:30 am to 16:00 (the warmest part of the day).

If it’s rainy or overcast, you’ll need to scrap your flower hunting plans for another day.

girl in namaqualand flowers

This is a rookie mistake I made way back in 2017 when I drove up the West Coast.

The flowers LOVE the sun and will follow it as it moves across the sky.

So if you’re driving with the sun in the wrong direction, there’s a good chance you “won’t see” the flowers because they aren’t facing you.

When planning your route, try to travel in a westerly direction in the morning. During mid-day travel south and then switch to an easterly route for the afternoon.

namaqualand flowers

The northern section of Namaqualand starts blooming as early as late July/early August.

If you have your heart set on visiting Namaqua National Park, you might miss all the flower action if you leave it for late September.

To avoid driving all that way to see an arid desert, start with the northern early in the season. Then take your time travelling south towards Nieuwoudville, Cedarberg and the West Coast.

The southerly section is usually a show-stopper from late August/early September.

girl in wildflowers

Don’t pick the flowers mkay.

Don’t walk on them either.

You’re only ruining the magical display for yourself, everyone else and South Africa’s biodiversity.

Do you really want to be that d*ck responsible for ruining our endemic flower species found NOWHERE else on Earth?

Keep on the paths and leave the flowers to see another day.

namaqualand flowers

Want to camp in the south section of Namaqua National Park? Don’t leave reception without a map.

The cellphone signal isn’t great and if your GPS decides to peace out, you’ll need to rely on your internal navigation skills to get out of the park.

Another option is to download the Tracks4Africa app. It works even when you have zero bars on your phone, and we used it more than once during our Namaqualand road trip.

car in namaqualand

Without mincing words, Namaqualand is the greatest wildflower show on Earth.

With a title like that, you can bet it attracts flower-hungry travellers of every age, size and nationality.

Don’t leave your trip planning to the last minute. You’ll get left with the crappy accommodation or possibly none at all.

Some peeps are so serious about their flower-hunting, camp spots inside Namaqua National Park book out six months to a year in advance!

girl in wildflowers

On a sunny day, the temperatures in Namaqualand can reach a scorching 40°C.

Meanwhile, in Cape Town or Johannesburg, we are shivering our butts off as the final cold front of winter keeps us glued to our heaters.

The key to exploring Namaqualand (and not overheating or shivering once the sun sunsets) is layers. You want to pack warm layers for the cool mornings and evenings and your best, breathable fabrics for the sweltering heat of the day.

Oh, and don’t leave your flip flops at home. Your feet will thank you.

girl in wildflowers

Think a road trip to Namaqualand is expensive?

I’m here to tell you, nay-nay. You’re wrong, my friend.

It’s cheaper than some return tickets between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Here’s a breakdown of our coasts for our week-long road trip through Namaqualand:

Accommodation:  We spent R6319.00 for three people on hotels and campsites. Each of us spent R2,106 for seven nights of lodging.

Food:  A total of R2,629 was spent feeding us for the week. That comes to R876.33 per person.

Petrol:  Our Ford Everest used Diesel, and that massive tank went along way! In total, we spent R3832.30 on petrol and split the cost three ways. We each paid R1,277.00.

Activities:  From museum visits to national park fees, we spent R504.00 in total on activities. That comes to a measly R 168.00 per person!

In total, our week-long Namaqualand road trip cost us R13,284.30!

Which means the three of us only paid R4428.00 each! Not bad at all.

I just stumbled upon your blog for the first time, and WOW I am in love! Instant subscriber! I’ve always wanted to explore Namaqualand and I just never knew where to start, this post is so extremely helpful to me. After some intense stalking of your blog and socials I just knew I had to reach out and let you know that I love it so much!

I am in fact, a fellow Jozi girl, and I am so inspired by your story. I recently completed my Bachelors degree in architecture, and then I worked in corporate for a year, and then I decided to take a massive leap of faith and say NOPE. I was tired of the long hours, the restrictions and just the general feeling that I was missing out on something. I’m now working remotely for a Canadian company, and I LOVE IT. I love being able to run errands or see my friends and family during the week. And I love having time for my hobbies and for myself!

I have just started my journey with the “laptop lifestyle” and I am so glad I found your blog. I will be here for both a good time, and a long time!

Tons of love already, Ariann

Hi! Great blog post- I especially appreciate the “what not to do” section. My husband and I did the Southern part of this trip (West Coast National Park, up to Laangebaan, Eland’s Bay, Citrusdaal, a bit of Clanwilliam, Darling) late August/early September a few years ago, this year we’re going to do the northern part (Caracal 4×4 eco drive, Kamieskroon, Springbok, Port Nolloth) in early August. May I ask what time you were in the Northern section (Namaqualand)?

Hi Kate! We started this Namaqualand trip at the beginning of September.

Hey! Unfortunately, I can’t as I haven’t personally done that route before. We did a 10-day road trip from Johannesburg and went to all the places I’ve listed on this post. You don’t need to camp. There’s lots of hotels and BnB in these towns 🙂

The Complete Guide to seeing the Flowers in Namaqualand, South Africa

Each year the West Coast region of South Africa bursts into bloom with the annual spring flowers. Visitors from around the world flock to see this incredible natural phenomenon as the landscape turns orange for a few short weeks in August. Read my Namaqualand Flower Guide for a complete guide to seeing the flowers in Namaqualand, South Africa.

Complete Guide to seeing the Flowers in Namaqualand

When to go?

Planning a trip to see the wild flowers can be a little tricky as it all depends on the rain received each year and the exact timing of the flower bloom isn’t really known until it is happening. However, I think you can be fairly certain that the last week of August is a safe bet to book your trip. It is also always best to start with the more Northern flower regions (like Namaqua National Park and Niewoudtville) as these tend to get warmer sooner and bloom sooner, ending with the more Southern flower regions (Biedouw Valley and West Coast National Park). This year we did have a lot of rain earlier in the season so it is quite possible that the flowers will bloom earlier. More rain also means more prolific flower scenes!

How long to go for?

Seeing the wild flowers can easily fit into a week long trip. For our trip we spent 2 nights in Dwarskerbos along the West Coast, 3 nights just outside Namaqua National Park, and then 2 nights in the Biedouw Valley.

Getting there

Where to go to see the flowers in namaqualand, dwarskersbos, west coast.

We began our flower road trip with a stop in Dwarskersbos along the West Coast. This was the perfect stop over spot to begin the trip so we could gain a bit of distance up towards the real flower region. While this wasn’t primarily a flower stop there were plenty of white daisies lining the roads here and we started to get into the flower spirit. We were close to the Vedldrif salt pan and were able to see some flamingoes and enjoy the vibrant pink salt flats. We also had a lovely walk along the Port Owen Marina which was beautiful.

Dwarskersbos Accommodation

We stayed at DK Villas which is the most stunning beach side holiday home. It’s within walking distance to the beach and beautifully decorated. Johan and Petra were such wonderful hosts!

Vanrhynsdorp – Maskam Guest Farm

Next up we drove up towards our accommodation near Namaqua National Park. On the way we stopped at Maskam Guest Farm near Vanrhynsdorp. This lovely private farm has walking trails open to the public. We paid a R10 entrance fee and were allowed to either drive along the farm roads to the flowers or take a walk. It was 34 degrees celcius the day we were here so we opted for the self-drive option. Unfortunately, because we had such late rains the year we went, the flowers here were not as prolific as we had hoped for. But the mounatin backdrop was gorgeous and it was lovely to see so many different flower species. Here are all the details for viewing the flowers at Maskam. *This is a private farmland and so walking in the fields was permitted. Just be sure not to step directly on the flowers! In National Parks it is strictly forbidden to walk in the flowers.

If you are willing to drive a little further out of town on your first day and jump straight into the flowers then I would definitely recommend staying at Maskam Guest Farm for your first night. It is only a 3,5hr drive from Cape Town and is the most beautiful setting. The winter rains have been good so far and so the flowers should be excellent here this year.

Namaqua National Park

No flower guide would be complete without a stop at the heart of Namaqualand: Namaqua National Park. As you drive up into the Northern Cape the wild flowers on the side of the road get more and more prolific with colourful vygies and daisies everywhere. Next you’ll arrive at the main event: Namaqua National Park! Namaqua National Park is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I had high hopes and every single one of my expectations was exceeded. We spent 3 nights staying just outside the park and this allowed us to spend a full day exploring Namaqua National Park and a full day exploring the Kamiesberg mountains. Both were absolutely breathtaking! To be honest you could even spend 4 nights here and have a second full day in the park.

Namaqua National Park Accommodation

We stayed in a farm house accommodation called Dwarspoort Farmhouse which was located a few minutes drive from the park entrance. It was rustic but absolutely lovely! Our hosts were so lovely and sweet. Here are the details to book the cottage:

Complete Guide to seeing the Flowers in Namaqualand

For your first full day in the Namaqua region you’re going to want to go into Namaqua National Park . You’re going to be entering at the Skilpad section of the park which is the main park entrance. For more information on how to get there follow the SANParks maps . You’ll be able to explore the park both on foot with a beautiful flower trail near the entrance gate, as well as by car with a drive around the flower section of the park. For those with a 4×4 and a taste for adventure there are additional routes that take you deeper into the park. You’ll easily spend the whole day here so make sure you pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic spots.

Daily Conservation Fees

Gate hours :.

  • 08:00 to 17:00

The park opens at 8am but the flowers will need a bit of time to warm up and open up. However, you’re also going to want to try get here before the tour buses start arriving. So perhaps around 9:30am is a good time to aim to get here.

Once you’ve arrived and paid your park fees at the gate you can park your car at reception. Here you can go in and get a map for the flower walking trails. There are two options of walking trails available to you. Both provide a wonderful opportunity to walk among the fields of wildflowers along demarcated paths. I would recommend packing comfortable walking shoes, some water and hat as it gets pretty hot here in August! The walking trail was one of my absolute highlights of this flower roadtrip and is definitely what sets Namaqua apart from West Coast National Park.

Namaqua National Park

Here are your trail options: Skilpad Walking Trail. This 5km circular route is a very popular walking trail, especially in the flower season. Korhaan Walking Trail. The 3km Korhaan Walking trail also starts at the Skilpad office but meanders through bushy areas, enabling you to see a greater variety of flowers.

Namaqua National Park

Once you have completed the walking trail through the flowers you can hop back in your car and drive the Skilpad Flower Loop . This is a circular loop suitable for all cars (not 4×4 exclusive) and takes you through the most gorgeous carpeted fields of orange flowers. There are a few picnics spots along this route so stop at one and enjoy the view while munching on your lunch.

Namanqua National Park skilpad flower route

Both the walking trails and this self-drive Skilpad flower route will allow you to see all the incredible flowers of the park. However, if you have a 4×4 and are up for a bit more of an adventure there are multiple other routes you can follow to explore the park a bit further. The scenery as you go deeper into the park resembles that of Namibia and is absolutely gorgeous!

Namaqua National Park

Kamieskroon & Kamiesberg

Kamiesberg spring flowers

Before coming to Namaqua National Park I hadn’t heard of the Kamiesberg mountains or that it is one of the top flower locations in the region. We discovered this fact in a 1984 copy of Namqualand: Garden of the Gods book written by Freeman Pattersonn. Patterson spoke of rolling hills covered in pastel colours and flowers as far as the eye could see. We asked our hosts about it (as there was no cell signal to Google anything) and they sent us off armed with some handwritten directions to a local guesthouse, Pedroskloof, in the Kamiesberg mountains. We were told the guesthouse owners would be able to give us the next set of instructions to find the promised land of flowers. They told us where to go from there. Here are the detailed directions for you to follow:

Drive towards Kamieskroon (a small town just off the N7) and turn left up the Kamiesberg Pass. Once you have gone over the pass you will continue driving until you reach  Thys se Kombuis. Here you can turn left and continue on towards Pedroskloof Farm Accommodation. Here it may be worth checking in with the guesthouse for confirmation on where the flowers are blooming at that particular time.

From Pedroskloof you will continue driving for another 30 minutes. You will pass through 2 rural villages, Rooifontein and Kalkoond before you see a gate on your left. You are free to enter this gate and drive down the dirt road to fields and fields of flowers. On the right of the main road there is a quiver tree forest which is well worth visiting!

Kamiesberg spring flowers

I absolutely adored both our time spent in the Namaqua Region exploring both the Namaqua National Park and the Kamiesberg mountains. This was our Nothern-most stop and so we then began our journey down south again towards the Biedouw Valley, stopping at Niewoudtville and Papkuilsfontein along the way.

Niewoudtville & Papkuilsfontein

Both located on the drive between Kamieskroon and the Biedouw Valley, Nievoudtville and Papkuilsfontein make for worthy pit stops along the way. Nievoudtville is a small Nothern Cape town with a number of plots of glorious flowers dotted around the town. There are also a few restaurants here for a lunch stop.

Namaqualand Flowers

We didn’t go into Papkuilsfontein but drove past and saw a pair of bat-earred foxes in the yellow blooms which was a treat sighting! Previously, day visitors could pay the Papkuilsfontain Guestfarm a visit to admire the gorgeous flower fields but since August 2022, the farm is only accessible by booked guests staying at the farm. If you are looking to take a slower trip through the Namaqua region this looks like a lovely spot to add to your itinerary.

Namaqualand Flowers

Biedouw Valley

The Biedouw Valley is pure magic! I had visited the Biedouw Valley previously just for a weekend getaway from Cape Town but decided to include it in the Namaqualand Flower Itinerary because it was just so special. The Biedouw Valley is an area of farmland in the Cederberg region that is usually farmed for rooibos tea. In the spring months the farmers don’t turn the soil and let the fields grow wild, resulting in the most beautiful display of wild flowers in the fields.

Biedouw Valley flowers

Bideouw Valley Accommodation

Lucky for us flower-seekers the Biedouw Valley is right next door to climbing-mecca, Rocklands. This means that there is plenty of affordable accommodation in the area.

Budget: On my first visit we were a group of 8 students and stayed in self-catering cottages at Traveller’s Rest . It was incredibly affordable, well-equipped, and close to the flowers. We were also able to get a booking at quite short notice! This spot is popular among climbers who come to boulder in the region. De Pakhuys is another affordable spot popular among climbers which is a short drive to the Valley.

Mid-range: On another trip I stayed in the heart of the valley at the original Biedeau Plaas which was a lovely old farm house (contact Rika at [email protected] 0835120281). Nothing could compare to the magic of witnessing the mountains turn the same colour colour as the flower fields at golden hour. So I would absolutely recommend trying to find accomodation in the valley itself. Friends of our stayed at Biedouw Valley Wegbreek which has rustic cottages nestled in the rocky mountains. I have heard wonderful things about Enjo Nature Farm . Situated right in the heart of the Biedouw Valley, they offer camping and self-catering options and have a flower field of their own. Unfortunately, they are very popular and are booked up quite far in advance. Another gem close by (but not in the actual valley) is the AfriCamps at de Pakhuys which is perfect for families and also has hot tub options!

Luxury: If you’re looking for some luxury then check out the Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Welness Retreat .

For all the juicy details on how to get to the Biedouw Valley and where to find the best flower fields you can go ahead and read my Spring Flowers in the Biedouw Valley blog post.

Biedouw Valley flowers

The flower diversity in the Biedouw Valley was definitely the best with some many gorgeous difference species.

Biedouw Valley flowers

And so concludes the Complete Guide to seeing the Flowers in Namaqualand, South Africa. These spots are perfect when incorporated into a 7-10 day road trip. However if you are just looking for a weekend getaway from Cape Town then the Biedouw Valley is only 3,5 hours away. If you are just looking for a day trip there are plenty of places to see the wild flowers close to Cape Town: see daisies in the West Coast National Park, canola fields in the Overberg region and blossoms in Babylonstoren. Read my  Spring Flowers in Cape Town blog post  for all these details.

Great guide for the flowers. Planning to go this year – so this guide is perfect. Must take my pupper ( meduim dog) with – any advise on accommodation and park admissions?

That’s wonderful news! You’ll need to check directly with the accommodation owners and SANParks for their policies on dogs. Hopefully your pupper can join!

To robertson.

Originally called Hooprivier the town of Robertson was founded in 1853 by two good friends, the Dutch Reformed Church minister at Swellendam, Rev. Dr. William Robertson and the Honorable Joseph Barry, who was the auctioneer when the farmland on which the town stood was cut up into erven. The new town was named Robertson in honour of the evangelistic Scottish minister who served the Overberg for 39 years.

to Paternoster

Paternoster embodies the heart and soul of the West Coast. It’s the oldest fishing village along this coastline and a place of contrasts and seasonal colours.  The traditional fishermen here live just has they always have, subsisting on snoek and crayfish caught by hand from their colourful wooden boats. Fisher wives collect mussels and veldkool and prepare dishes to old family recipes, sharing meals with neighbours. It lends an air of community and timelessness to the little village, as does the gentle pace of life lived to tides and winds.

To describe Garies as in the middle of nowhere does not do any damage to the reputation of the town (for those who stay here, particularly during the spring flower revolution, will come anyway). It lies in the heart of the Namaqualand and makes an excellent base for those exploring the spring flowers. And rumour has it that Hannie Louw’s Tamatie Blatjang (tomato chutney) is worth stopping for alone.

Read more about the Garies area here…

to Calvinia

Calvinia was founded in 1845 on the farm Hoogekraal which was purchased by the Dutch Reformed Church in order to establish a parish for the far flung community of the Hantam Karoo. The original name of the region and the village was Hantam. The name Hantam has its origins with the Khoi people and it is believed that the name refers to “the hill where the red nut sedge grows”.

Soon after the arrival of the first minister, Reverend N Hofmeyr in 1851, the village’s name was changed to Calvinia to honour the Protestant theologian and reformer, John Calvin.

Today Calvinia is a pleasant town with a well preserved architectural heritage that provides an interesting window on its past. Calvinia’s economy continues to revolve around wool and mutton farming.

Read more about Calvinia here…

to Sutherland

Sutherland was found in 1723 as a church and market town to serve the area’s sheep farmers. By 1872 the town had a population of 138 registered citizens living in 19 houses.

The large Dutch Reformed church in the centre of Sutherland was built in 1899.

The Sutherland region continues to be a strong livestock farming area as well as an astronomer’s delight. While you are here to experience the wonders of the stars, don’t forget to tuck into some of the classic Karoo dinners or feel what it’s like to be in one of the coldest places in South Africa on a crisp winter’s day.

Did you know that some farmers in the Sutherland area still “trek” with their sheep from winter grazing to the lowlands (Tankwa area) to summer grazing at more elevated altitudes?

We will also visit Kamieskroon and the Skilpad Reserve. Please keep in mind that the number of blooming flowers is completely weather dependent, and every year is different. It is hard to plan to see this, but this colourful spectacle is something to behold!

We will lunch at a local gem where after we will spend the afternoon visiting flower hotspots around the Springbok area. After a full day we will be back to our guesthouse. Memory banks full and camera rolls even fuller where we will enjoy a three-course home-cooked dinner. Bring your own wine or drink to the table and reminisce about the beauty of the day.

After breakfast we will start the journey home with a quick stop for a cappuccino in Matjiesfontein before we have a farewell lunch together. We will greet new friends and honour life-long memories made together, with our footprints left in the sands of the Namaqualand, our cameras full of exceptional pictures and an appreciation for the beauty of this word in our hearts…

“We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.” Anais Nin

Helpful and interesting information.

*Nama qualand (khoekhoe: “Nama-kwa” meaning Nama Khoe people’s land) is an arid region of Namibia and South Africa, extending along the west coast over 1,000 km (600 mi) and covering a total area of 440,000 km 2  (170,000 sq mi).

*It may be beautiful but it is hot. The temperatures in Namaqualand can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, so be sure to bring along plenty of sunscreen and bottled drinking water for any hiking adventures you might be having in the area. Namaqualand might first appear to be a desert, but there is a diverse array of flora and fauna to be found.

*The evenings on the other hand can get extremely cold so remember a jacket and warm clothes.

*The flowers only bloom at a certain time and not throughout the year. It is important to note that the flowering dates will differ slightly according to the rains that occur, and whether there was a heavy or light rainfall during the months leading up to August.

*Namaqualand is a biodiverse region of South Africa, with some plants and animals that are not found in other provinces. One of the more unique animals you will be able to spot include the Cape speckled tortoise , considered to be the smallest tortoise in the world. You might also spot the strange looking insectivorous aardwolf  as well as the stunning African wildcat .

*Namaqualand is truly a interesting place to see how our feathered friends can survive harsh conditions. You can expect to see interesting animals such as the Namaqua Dove.

*About 4,000 plant species grow in this area, and Namaqualand has  more than 1,000  types of flowers that do not grow anywhere else in the world. It has many species of succulent plants, for example vygies which have attractive blooms.

We were met at the airport and taken to our hotel. We then had 4 days of tours in and around Capetown. For 3 days we had Kegan as our driver and guide and he was excellent. Good knowledge, fun and always ensuring our requirements were met. We always had good quality vehicles and we always felt safe. I would thoroughly recommend this company. It's not worth itemizing each beautiful moment because beautiful moments aren't to be itemized. The beauty and magic of South Africa can be captured by experiencing it in any way. She in turn passed our Cape town tours to Capey Tours. We had all private tours led by Craig, the owner. This is the only way to see Cape town. Not in a group. Saw all the best sights and more and had a great time. Then Flew to Victoria Falls to see the falls and Chobe. This all was arranged by Salty Travel, who I highly recommend. We were lucky enough to spend several days with Capey Tours and if we didn't hit all the highlights of the city and surrounding areas, we certainly came close. As a visitor, I don't want to bother with counting cash at every single spot. Also, the stops were customized to our desires, and we ended up at some idyllic more secluded wineries, more boutique if you may, off the beaten path and mass crowds. Craig went out of his way to accommodate us, and always allowed us ample time to ask questions and take photos, while also being social media savvy himself, which was a real surprise. How to visit Namaqualand Flower route

As soon as the thirsty earth had enough, a magical array of colour explodes over this tranquil but arid earth. The Eden of all to see the Namaqua flowers – Namaqualand Flower route.

Now, not recommended as a quick weekend getaway, it is far, and towns are scarce as chicken teeth. Secondly, it is mostly dirt roads , not at all made for sedans, it will take you much much longer, as you end up driving like a tortoise. Plus some of the route are only for 4×4, so don’t even try if you’re in a sedan. A 4×4 would be a better option for this area.  Eek, flashback to our slow driving in Namibia, and I mean slow, we had a sedan, lol, rookie mistake as you travel much slower and can definitely not go where all the other big 4×4 go.

Namaqualand is nothing short of amazing, so a week-long getaway or a more extended road trip to escape the busy city is recommended.

*Do note the flower season starts here as early as July, and might not be around September.

Namaqua National Park

Home to 3500 species of flora, and of that, 1000 species are endemic. Yikes that’s a lot, just imagine how beautiful.  Namaqua National Park is large and starts from the Skilpad area and Buffles River to the coast at HondeklipBaai down to Groen River mouth wetlands. This semi-desert area can be unforgivingly hot at times, maybe not the place to be during summer? But during Spring, an array of daisies and wildflowers cover this tranquil arid area.

Being so remote, this secluded oasis is the perfect place to stargaze . Imagine, campfire, ocean sounds for ambience, and a starry starry night.

The most popular route is a 5km circular route at Skilpad , a fee is payable at the start of the circular drive .

Throughout the whole Namaqualand area, make sure you have a map , old school style or downloaded, connection can be a problem here. Hello? Can you hear me? Eh, which way?

*Take note the closest place with ATMs or petrol stations is Springbok at about 90km away.

Goegap Nature Reserve

Goegap Nature Reserve is only a short 15km from Springbok and encompasses sandy plain and granite koppies . It is situated on one of the 36 recognized biodiversity hotspots, where about a quarter of the plants here can’t be found anywhere else.

More suitable for those with a sedan , take a scenic drive along the 17km tourist route. There is also a 3 hour guided truck tour if you area bit tired from driving and just want to enjoy the flowers. Bird watchers, see if you can spot the majestic black eagles. Goegap Nature Reserve is not only about the flowers, but a bird watchers paradise.

❦ Flowers to see

Here again you will have fields of orange gazanias , t’neitjie which are part of the Malva family (Geraniaceae Pelargonium).

Also look out for the ‘Halfmens’ tree (Pachypodium namaquanum) , it might not be a flower but this tree is not something you will see often. Its name ‘halfmens’ in Afrikaans means half human, as it resembles a person standing.

Where to eat

Majority of the larger fast-food chains are in Springbok, but if you’re like me, I walk past them and find the local cafes, like  Herb Garden Restaurant & Coffee Shop or Bean Tree Cafe (yes, part of bigger brand, but they are nice for a quick coffee).

If you are staying around HondeklipBaai seafood is a must, sorry but you can’t visit the west coast of South Africa and not have seafood. With crayfish being most popular, a name like Rooi Spinnekop Restaurant is rather suited. Just love Dop en Kreef Restaurant saying, ‘Waar ons hond lekker kan eet’. They are both  seasonal restaurants , so do check beforehand, as a reservation is essential with both these places.

Where to stay

Ever considered staying in a hondehok? Well, in HondeklipBaai , you can get your own kennel. Don’t worry, they are not real hondehokke. Honnehok Resort ($) are beautiful self-catering cottages.

If you find your self in the middle of nowhere, yes  Garies is kind go in the middle of nowhere , Sophia Guest House Garies , a rather rustic homely guest house, is one of only two options here, and was recommended to us.

For more mid-range accommodation Apollis Cottage ($$) is 15km from Springbok, is nestled on a farm with amazing views. Okiep Country Hotel with self-catering AirBnB ($$) units are only 7km from Springbok.

Star-studded evening camping seems idilic in an area so far removed from light pollution. Our favourite would be the luxury Namaqua Flower Beach Camp ($$$$). Imagine camping right next to the ocean enclosed by Namaqua flowers, while having a chef prepare your dinner. These glamping tents not only offer spectacular views but some of the best dining experiences in the area, prepared by professional chefs in their remote kitchen. As a seasonal camp , they are only open for four weeks during flower season, this year till 12 September 2021. If you plan to camp a bit more rugged, set up your tent in one of the designated areas of the park.

Our last selection is a splurge , Naries Namakwa Retreat hidden away in Spektakelberg. From country cottages to Namakwa Mountain Suites ($$$$) at Naries Namakwa Retreat , they are definitely your more pricey and luxurious accommodation in the area, but the mountain suits are just so unique. Man they look awesome, like (I want to say) futuristic dome caves.

An extra one that I could not resist is Tzorvas Accommodation ($), the little wooden chalet seems to be in the middle of nowhere , rather appealing.

Other activities

You came to Namaqua National Park for the flowers, and that you can experience through the numerous 4×4 trails and hiking trails, as well as your picnics . We suggest to pack lekker picnics to enjoy, well you kind of have to, as there are not many place around to eat at.

Around the coast at HondeklipBaai, you will find  shipwrecks as well as the HondeklipBaai lighthouse .

Did you know 20km from Springbok lies a former mining town? Nog ‘n Groot gat. Nababeep used to be a copper mine, arrange to visit the museum through  Okiep Country Hotel .

On the outskirts of Garies you will find Letterklip (letter rock), megalithic boulders that were fortified and used by the British during the Anglo-boer war in 1901-2.

Within the Goegap Nature Reserve, you can visit the Hester Malan Wildflower Garde n , with an array of indigenous succulent plants. Or how about horseback riding through the reserve. And if you are looking for something a bit more adventurous or brought your mountain bike with, mountain biking on the cross-country trails might be for you, contact Okiep Country Hotel.

Spoegriver caves houses the earliest evidence of sheep in South Africa, thus being archaeologically important, and quite fascinating to see.

4×4 Eco-trail

As most of the area is only accessible by 4×4, it is any 4×4 enthusiast dream, and with South Africa longest 4×4 trail , I understand why. This one-way 4×4 Eco-trail spans over 600km, through gravel, sand, and a few river crossings. It is rated a formal grading of between two to three and can easily take you 60-70 hours to complete. Starting near Pofadder and finishes at the coast at Alexander Bay. Contact Namakwa 4×4 Eco-trail to book.

Best ways to visit the Namaqualand flowers?

You have well let’s say  three options , the first two would be self drive . Using your own or renting a vehicle if you fly in. Keep in mind the areas close to Springbok and around Namaqua National Park are mostly dirt roads. Only the main roads are tare, and certain parts are only accessible by 4×4, so do consider that.

Lesson learnt in Namibia : gravel = 4×4 or you spend the whole day driving, or not even.

So self drive sedan or self drive 4×4 . 4×4 gives you the option to camp in areas not accessible by normal sedan, hence our second option if you want to not only stay in BnB and hotels.

Thirdly, if you do wish to visit Namaqua National Park and not up to driving a 4×4 or prefer to join a tour,  taking the stress out of figuring out where to go, there are many tour operators in the area.

Other important info

A wild card is something to look into if you often visit certain national parks, reserves, and resorts around Southern Africa. It allows for free entry for a year, depending on the membership you bought.

SA Campsite

A useful website, SA campsite , they list campsites across South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia. As well as pet friendly camp site, biker friendly camp sites, to 4×4 campsites and even camp sites with MTB trails. Take note they do not do bookings.

It can get hot

Yes, it is cooler during the flower season, but do note that in summer the temperature can reach 40°C and up, it is semi-desert.

Need help identifying the flowers

Clan flora has made it so easy with their online app, where you can select the shape, and the colour, and walla, the flowers full name pops up. It covers most of the flowers from the West Coast, Cederberg, Nieuwoudtville, and Namaqua.

This is blooming awesome!

Don’t & Do’s

Stay on the path, d o not step on the flowers.

Do not be that person that goes and lays down in the flowers for a selfie. Do not go ‘rol’ around in them. Just don’t.

Also do not pick them for obvious reasons.

Do drive cautiously through the parks as animals such as tortoises and hares are coming out of hibernation and the occasional antelope or ostrich crossing the road.

And do enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful Namaqua flower route!

CH Travel - Places to see Flowers in Namaqualand

Of Our South Africa Travel Adventure

Namaqualand is one of the driest zones in the world, a desert and often inhospitable. But for a few weeks in early spring (Aug/Sep), this desert blooms phenomenally. If there was enough rain in late winter, Namaqua turns into a spectacular carpet of flowers: wildflowers, succulents, and bushes explode in colors.

And we were fortunate to catch the right time and experienced the most stunning places to see flowers in Namaqualand.

There are many intriguing places to see flowers in Namaqualand, in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The desert is in full bloom only a few weeks in early spring (Aug/Sep), like in Goegap NR, Namaqua NP, Agama/ Klipfontain, Groenrivier valley, Skilpad/ Kamieskroon, and Matjiesfontain/ Nieuwoudsville.

We crossed Namaqualand from North to South and found spectacular flower spots. Here are our tips on where to go and what you can experience.

The Route to and through Namaqualand

NamakwaGo2

To get to Namaqualand, you can either come in on the N7 from the North (Namibia) or the South (Cape Town) or via the N14 from the east (Upington/ Johannesburg). From Cape Town, it is about 450 kilometers.

The N7 is also the only highway through Namaqualand and the best road if you’d like to get somewhere quickly.

We came from Cederberg, and it took us 2 hours (around 220 kilometers) to the town of Garies. Just before Garies, the Northern Cape, and Namaqualand start – and so does the scenic flower route.  However,  you’ll see heaps of flowers already a while before.

Garies has some gas stations, where you can fuel up, de-/ inflate your tires after a 4×4 ride (if you do not have special equipment with you), and a few shops are available too.

Visit the iconic Daisyland Tourism Café & Shop, a flashback in time in every way (food and atmosphere 😉

The first part of our journey led us from North of Garies, Agama/ Klipfontain, all the way up to Springbok and the Goegap Nature Reserve. And back through the area around Kamieskroon/ Skilpad.

NamakwaFlower2

In the second part of the trip, we drove along the Groenrivier route into the Namaqua National Park.  Here we took the 4×4 trail all along the coast, watching flowers on the beach and dunes.

Here are all the details about excellent places to see flowers in Namaqualand.

Where to stay in the Namaqualand – Ideally in Flower Camps!

To make the best out of your trip and see flowers in the north and south as well as in the mountains and on the beach, split our stay in Namaqualand.

And ideally, stay in one of the flower camps specially set up for the flower season and flower lovers. There you will find like-minded people and heaps of precious tips on where to go next. Also, you are in the middle of untouched nature and can unwind.

So, first, we checked in into the Agama Camp , 20 kilometers north of Garies, next to Klipfontain.

Its seven guest tents and a main tent with the dining and lounge area are nestled in an idyllic tranquil valley in the hills between Garies and Kamieskroon.

The comfortable tents offer an ensuite bathroom (running water shower & toilet), gas heater, great terrace. In the heated communal area, there is the dining area for breakfast and dinner, a bar, TV & Wifi & a charging station for electronic devices. And an outdoor pool for the warmer days.

The atmosphere is very relaxed, and the two hosts, Victor and Linda, are exceptionally helpful.

CH Travel - Namaqua Flower Beach Camp

The second great stay we had was in the Namaqua Flower Beach Camp in the South of the Namaqua NP, 70 kilometers away from Garies. The location is just breathtaking as the 15 tents sit directly on the beach, overlooking the Atlantic.

Max two persons share a cottage tent, with an ensuite bathroom w/o running water. You have a chemical toilet and camping shower, which is topped up twice a day. The daisy diner (restaurant and lounge) serves breakfast, tea time snacks, and dinner – it’s not heated, so bring warm clothes. Also, prepare for cold nights in the tent, with generated electricity (electric blankets) until 11 pm. PS: there is no Wifi available – so you’ll unwind from daily life.

Owner Alan, Manager Lista, and the entire team are fantastic hosts, and they take good care of you.

Besides the beach camp, there is also the Namaqua Flower Skilpad Camp , 30 kilometers on a gravel road from Krommieskroon, in the central area of Namaqua NP. These are 15 tents in the lush hills with a panoramic view of the wilderness.

You can also drive back and forth between the Skilpad and Beach camp within the park, but you need a 4×4 vehicle to do so, and one way will take you about 2 hours.

This brings us to all the fantastic brilliant places to see flowers in Namaqualand. Find Your Favorite Spot!

1 Goegap Nature Reserve

CH Travel Namakwa Goegap Nature Reserve Flowers Portrait

The Goegap Nature Reserve is in the north of Namaqua, about 15 kilometers south-east of Springbok, and covers 15.000 hectares of land. Via the N7, you get to Springbok, turning east onto the R355, which leads directly to the park entrance.

Goegap’s semi-desert is an excellent mix of granite mountains and sandy plains that make up a beautiful backdrop for the flower season.

And it does not disappoint. As far as you can see, the sandy plains turn into a colorful carpet of blooming wildflowers and succulents, with a couple of awesome kokerbooms (quiver trees) in between. So stunning.

CH Travel - Namakwa - Goegap Nature Reserve Granite Hills and Kokkeboom

The nature reserve includes three 4×4 circular routes, each of them about 20 kilometers long. You have to pay an additional fee to use them, but it’s worth it. They take you uphill to mountainous and lonesome areas, with more flowers, granite hills, and a few animals, such as zebras, wildcats, and various boks. Calculate about 2 hours for each drive (yes, it’s bumpy), so 6 hours in total if you’d like to do them all.

Alternatively, there is a 13-kilometer “tourist route”, which is just as rich in flowers, but with more people around.

Entrance Fees & Accommodation Prices for Goegap

Adults & children (per day): ZAR 30 (kids under 6 years free)

4×4 routes (per day/ vehicle): ZAR 300

Horse trail (per day/own horse): ZAR 90

If you’d like to stay overnight in the reserve, there are a couple of options:

Campsites and Huts have no electricity, no kitchen, communal ablution, but a braai/ barbecue area. The chalets come with bathroom, kitchen, braai, fridge & gas oven

9 Campsites (per day/ 2 pers): ZAR 150

4 Bush Huts (per day/ 2 pers): ZAR 250

2 Chalets (per day/ 2 pers): ZAR 1000

Lekker Eating & Drinking Plek (Spots)

Daisyland Tourism Coffee Shop

The iconic café and shop offer traditional South African food, especially sweets, like all kinds of rusks, mosbolletjies, melktert. You have to try that.

It’s also a flashback in time with country-style furnishings and music.

CH Travel - Translator select language

2 Agama Valley/ Klipfontain

CH Travel - Namakwa - Agama Flowers

Agama is not far from Garies and yet a world of its own. Only 10 kilometers after Garies, you turn off the N7 onto the road to Klipfontain. After a short time, you drive another 10 kilometers off-road into a remote valley or co-called kloof. Passing farms and herds of cattle, it gets more hilly and greener.

It feels a bit like a botanical garden because you do not just come across patches of flowers but also blooming trees, bushes, and succulents. Getting out of the car and take a walk is so easy – and peaceful. Even more, if you sit on the terrace of an Agama tent, especially in the early morning and after sunset, the mixture of colorful plants and the sounds of birds is incredible.

In the area, you can drive different routes through this wilderness and do not need a 4×4 car.

3 Groenrivier Route

CH Travel - Namakwa - Groerivier Flower Route

The route along the Groenrivier takes you from the N7 down to the coast and the southern end of the Namaqua NP (Groenrivier entrance office).

It is a broad, hardly used gravel road, where you mainly meet visitors to the national park. Coming from Garies, the Groenrivier road turns right at the end of the village to the west and takes you about 70 kilometers to and through the river valley.

In terms of flowers, it is intoxicating because yellow and pink flowering shrubs stretch as far as the eye can see. A few quaint farmhouses scattered along the road and in the river bed makes for a very idyllic landscape.

If you take your time, enjoy, stop, take photos, it will take around 2 hours to reach the coast.

What we noticed – People on a Flower Mission

No matter where you are in Namaqualand during the flower season, you will always meet people on a flower-watching mission exploring the area. And from these guys, you’ll get the best tips on where to find the most beautiful flower locations at the moment. This is how we found our fantastic spots.

Our Tip: Mix and mingle with the people, ideally in the flower camps, especially at mealtime. Everyone is happy to share the flower findings of the day and many insider tips.

I was tiptoeing all the time to make sure not to kill the beautiful and delicate flowers. But no way, there are so many, and you can avoid stepping on them. HER German Take

4 Namaqua National Park

CH Travel Namakwa Namaqua NP Groenrivier Entrance

The Namaqua National Park is just thrilling during the flower season. It wows you with blooming sandy desert in context with the wild, rugged Atlantic coastline – plus great graphite mountains in the background.

To drive around on the many fantastic trails in the National Park, you need a 4×4 vehicle.

Like the stunning and adventurous routes from the Groenrivier office in the south to the Spoegrivier Caves and Estuary (46km), and further north to Skilpad Camp (another 83 kilometers).

CH Travel - Namakwa Namaqua NP Castal Road

At first, it will take you 34 kilometers along the rough rocky coastline to many excellent camping and picnic spots and lookouts. Shortly before the Bitterrivier dune field, a 21-kilometer circular path branches off inland, leading you through great patches of wildflowers scattered in a sandy desert.

The following 12 kilometers over the dune in flowers is excellent, as is the rocky and smelly area of the seal colony, with literally hundreds of these marine mammals.

CH Travel - Namakwa - Seals and Eltje

The track bids farewell to the coast at the beautiful Spoegrivier Caves and Estuary and leads you inland into the mountains.

Tip: Up to Spoengrivier, the entire route is sandy, with a few soft sand spots where you cannot stop (without getting stuck). The road sections are built as one-way lanes and signposted!

However, make sure you are well equipped with shovel and tire traction boards. We know because we got stuck there and were not the only ones. Also, there are not many people around to help you out, neither you have a mobile phone connection.

CH Travel Namaqua Spoegrivier Estuary

Ready for more? Then go for the remaining 83 kilometers up to Skilpad.  The trail is easier to drive through a rocky desert and granite mountains than the sandy first part of the trip. But also here flowers pave your way and make it an excellent experience.

5 Skilpad Nature Reserve/ Kamieskroon

Or you take a ride to Skilpad from Kamiskroon. It leads you through an idyllic area of mountains and shrubland plains.

Skilpad is famous for its abundance of wildflowers and succulents. Take the 5-kilometer circuit for the best flower experience. And climb up to the “Roof of Africa”-Viewpoint on a dome-shaped granite hill to overlook the Kamieskroon mountains.

PS: Skilpad means tortoises, and you have an excellent chance to come across some turtles.

6 Matjiesfontain/ Nieuwoudtville

Nieuwoudtville is an every-year favorite of the flower route. It is known for the idyllic inner city, with flower lanes, like around the church. Also, the botanical garden and the area around the waterfall of the Doring blooms in the most picturesque way.

But visit the tiny settlement of Matjiesfontain, 33 kilometers east on the R27. Beautiful patches of flowers shake hands along the road and the meandering Oorlokskloofrivier, especially where the river loops past Matjiesfontain.

Namaqualand Flower Route

tours to see namaqualand flowers

Blooming flowers abound. As far as the eye can see. Endless carpets of flowers in pinks, purples, yellows, oranges and white and that’s just the start.

In the Northern Cape Province of South Africa , the Namaqualand Flower Route stretches 800 kilometers from Cape Town to Port Nolloth on the northwest coast. A stretch that for the greater part of the year seems underwhelming apart from wide open spaces. But come August through September it’s hard to imagine this area to be anything but astounding.

Although the region sees little to almost no rain annually. Following the winter months, the flowers come into bloom and what was once a rather average landscape, comes to life and it’s spectacular. Quite frankly it’s mind boggling. It’s not just that there are flowers everywhere but that there are 3,500 plant species . It would be amazing to see this number of plants anywhere and yet here you are in the middle of an arid region, a semi-desert. What? We know it’s unbelievable. There are more plant species here than in the entire UK.

The dusty desert is literally transformed into a wonderland of flowers. It’s quite the sight and certainly worth the visit if you are planning your trip around this time (August through September). We’d even go so far as to say, it’s worth planning your trip specifically for this time to include it.

A different scene awaits you at every turn. On either side of the road and in the distance. The route usually starts from Cape Town but some may argue that Niewoudtville or just north of the West Coast National Park is a better starting point. We say, either way is fine. You’re still going to see the flowers. Welcome to Namaqualand. Next stop, add on the Richtersveld National Park and Alexander Bay. Colourful wild flowers for days.

If you’re short on time or wish to combine the flowers with another part of your holiday to another destination in South Africa or travel further into Namibia , you can see all the flowers in the West Coast National Park. It’s a doable day trip from Cape Town. We recommend you really make a thing of it though and go the distance. It’s worth it.

The N7 will get you there. Niewoudtville is the bulb capital of the world boasting startling numbers of geophytes. A soil so rich that even a mere spadeful could hold up to 100 of them. Here you can already stake the claim to having seen 1350 different species of which at least 22 are only seen in these parts. Outside of flowering season it’s still a win to explore flora in the Niewoudtville Wild Flower Reserve and Hantam Botanical Gardens .

Then you’re off to Garies , a small town with more flowers and the 20 kilometre Roodebergkloof Trail . On to Kamieskroon you can visit the Skilpad Wild Flower Reserve , a mere 17 kilometres northwest of town. A further 70 kilometres takes you past the Goegap Nature Reserve covering 7,000 hectares to the largest town in Namaqualand, Springbok. We say largest because it is, but even then it’s certainly no booming metropolis. Flora, fauna and wildflowers. This is the crux of it.

Last but not least, you’re headed to Port Nolloth , the Richtersveld National Park and Alexander Bay. Flowers on the coastline. Yes that’s right. More to marvel at.

It’s blooming fantastic. Starting with the first signs of flowers at the end of July depending on the rains. You’re safe to plan for August and by end September into October the purple vygies bloom signalling the end of the season. Nature in all her glory from start to finish. A route that demands a journey to be enjoyed. Explore. Sit back and relax.

Book in advance. With the flowers being seasonal the hype is for the prime flowering season and it’s all said and done in just a few weeks. Landscapes, pristine beaches and quirky towns , it’s not just a route if you’re a botanist or ecology enthusiast.  It’s so overwhelmingly beautiful it’ll capture the envy of any eye and who knows may even ignite your inner botanist, although it’s enough to simply enjoy them all the same.

Where there are flowers, there are pollinators, including butterflies, bees and an incredible number of birds . An ecosystem come to life, also means animals. The likes of bat-eared fox, steenbok, springbok and Cape porcupine to name a few.

The flowers in bloom are not experienced anywhere else in the world. Just here at this specific time of year. It’s magic. The best part is that's not all. The Namaqualand and Northern Cape at large has much more to offer. A destination worthy of further exploration. There's the flowers and there's the tranquil Diamond Coast , the gushing falls at Augrabies National Park and the red sand dunes and black maned lions in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park . Off you go.

Last updated on June 24th, 2023 at 05:23 pm

tours to see namaqualand flowers

Namaqualand is a region located in the northern part of South Africa, covering parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces. It is known for its unique and diverse flora, particularly during the spring months when the desert landscape is transformed by colorful wildflowers.

The region is also home to several indigenous communities, including the Nama and San people, who have inhabited the area for thousands of years. Namaqualand has a rich cultural heritage, with many traditional practices and customs still observed by its inhabitants today.

In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Namaqualand also offers visitors a range of outdoor activities: hiking, birdwatching, and game viewing. The region is also renowned for its stargazing opportunities, with clear, unpolluted skies providing an ideal environment for astronomy enthusiasts.

The top 10 things to do when you visit Namaqualand are:

1. See the Wildflowers

Namaqualand is home to some of the most stunning wildflower displays in the world. The region is known for its arid landscape but when the winter rains arrive the landscape is transformed into a colorful carpet of wildflowers.

The Namaqualand wildflowers are incredibly diverse with over 4,000 different species of plants in the region. The flowers range in color, shape, and size, and include daisies, lilies, succulents, and other unique species that are found nowhere else on earth.

The best time to see the wildflowers in Namaqualand is between August and September when the flowers are in full bloom. The exact timing of the blooms can vary from year to year depending on the rainfall patterns so it’s best to check with local authorities to plan your trip accordingly.

Some of the best places to see the wildflowers in Namaqualand include the Namaqua National Park, Goegap Nature Reserve, and the West Coast National Park. These parks have hiking trails, picnic areas, and other amenities that make them great places to explore the wildflowers and the surrounding landscapes.

If you’re planning to visit Namaqualand to see the wildflowers be sure to bring comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen as well as a camera to capture the stunning scenery. And remember to respect the natural environment and follow all park rules and regulations to help preserve this unique and beautiful region for future generations.
