For something cheery, take the time to watch colorful festivals that Oriental Mindoro has to offer. Pinamalayan has the Bahaghari (rainbow) Festival that showcases people’s strength and harmony, like the colors of the rainbow, against life’s challenges.

This festival occurs every 25th April, when the park is full of festivities and dances are performed on the streets accompanied by colorful floats.

Meanwhile, Sulyog (suli for banana and niyog for coconut) Festival serves as a thanksgiving festival for the main agricultural crops of Bongabong – banana and coconut.

You can engage in these festivals as there are dances, cultural presentations and activities, and sometimes, you can even try banana and coconut products that they’re known for as they are handed out or sold to you. This festival happens every 15th March, and is also celebrated through street performances.

If you want an adventure that’s both leisurely and thrilling, take a shot at crossing the Tukuran Hanging Bridge in Puerto Galera that’s hanging over a river. Bear in mind that the bridge is a bit old. Though it’s still safe, the thrill is in its wobbly movement as you walk through it.

What’s more, it’s a fun way to explore before reaching Tukuran Falls , where you can take a refreshing dip and take photos.

For something more cultural, take a tour around Mangyan villages in Puerto Galera or Mansalay, where everything is handcrafted – such as bags and baskets – by the indigenous Mangyan communities residing in different parts of Mindoro.

Apart from their independent writing system, their arts and crafts are another way in which they preserve their culture.

As Mindoro is also known for its agriculture, head to Gabutero Organic Farm in Bongabong to learn more about how the  agriculture in the province is maintained.

Aside from the greenhouses and flowers, you’ll also see a wide range of crops along the plains of the farm as well as fishing ponds.

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

If one would condense my growth as a beach chaser into the life span of a butterfly, Puerto Galera would be somewhere in the caterpillar stage. Back when I was not yet capable of flying, when Boracay, Palawan and the Maldives filled my flights of fancy, I had my eyes on places that was a little bit more realistic. First, I wanted to just hit the beach, a nearby beach, any beach. Then, I wanted to go farther, ride a boat, and set foot in an island. I always had a destination in mind — Puerto Galera.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING PUERTO GALERA

Even before the colonial era, Puerto Galera has always been a busy port area because it is a good natural shelter for ships and boats. In 1570, the Spaniards arrived in Batangas and later crossed the Verde Island Passage to this coastal settlement. They named it Puerto Galera or Port of Galleons.

Today, Puerto Galera is a first class municipality in Oriental Mindoro, about 130 km south of Manila. Although occupying the northernmost tip of another island (Mindoro Island), it can be easily reached from Luzon. This accessibility from the capital and CALABARZON, the country’s most populous region, made it one of the most popular beach destination for decades.

Puerto Galera faces the Verde Island Passage, which is described by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity citing the high concentration of marine species. In 1973, it was declared a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Here are more useful bits about Puerto Galera.

• Location: Oriental Mindoro, Philippines.
• Languages: Iraya and Tagalog. But most residents, especially tourism workers, can communicate in English too.
• Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.90, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.57 (as of May 2019).
• Modes of payment: CASH, primarily. Some establishments accept credit cards, but bring cash to be safe.

WHERE TO STAY IN PUERTO GALERA

Puerto Galera’s jagged coastline is hemmed by over a dozen fair-sand-filled coves. Of all these beaches, these three are the most ideal places to stay for tourists:

• White Beach. Puerto Galera’s most popular beach. This is Galera’s answer to Boracay’s White Beach. (And yep, they bear the same name.) This is where most of the tourism action happens. You’ll find a wide array of lodging and dining options here. Nightlife is also here.
• Aninuan Beach. Located just next to White Beach but this is much more tamed and quiet. This is a good place to stay if you’re after a more relaxing stay but want easy access to White Beach.
• Sabang Beach. A little bit detached from the first two coves, but it also harbors lots of accommodations. This is a great base for divers because of the number of dive resorts.

How to get to puerto galera.

The cheapest and most usual way to reach Puerto Galera from Manila is via Batangas. From Batangas Pier, you will need to catch a ferry to either of the two ports in Puerto Galera. Balatero Port is closer to White Beach and Aninuan Beach, while Muelle Port is closer to Sabang.

• Head to a JAM Liner bus terminal. There’s one in Cubao and another in LRT Buendia area.
• Catch a bus bound for Batangas Pier. Some buses pass through and make several stops in Sto. Tomas and Tanauan. If you want a quick journey, board a bus with the CALABARZON sign. This means that the bus will be taking the STAR Tollway, which bypasses most towns and cities between SLEX and Batangas City. Travel time is 2-3 hours. Fare is P197 if you’re coming from Buendia or P207 from Cubao. See bus schedule in the next section below.
• Get off at Batangas Pier. You can also tell the conductor that you plan to go to Puerto Galera so he knows where to drop you off.
• Upon arrival at Batangas Pier, head straight to the ticket counters. You may be approached by touts saying that there are no public ferries to Puerto Galera that day. DON’T BELIEVE THEM. They’re just trying to get you to charter an expensive private boat. Walk straight to the ticketing counters.
• Purchase tickets to Puerto Galera. You may choose a roro or a fastcraft. You can find the schedule as of April 2019 here . Fare: P300.
• Pay the Batangas Pier terminal fee. P30 per person.
• Board your booked ferry. Travel time: 55-100 minutes, depending on the type of vessel.
• At Balatero or Muelle Port, pay the environmental fee. P50 per person. Balatero Pier also collects an additional P20 terminal fee.
• Ride a tricycle to your resort. If your resort is within short distance, fare is P200 per trip or P50 per person (if you’re a group).

BATANGAS PIER TO PUERTO GALERA SCHEDULE

You can board a roro, a semi-fastcraft, or a fastcraft to Muelle Port or Balatero Port.

There used to be outrigger boats that carry passengers straight to White Beach or Sabang Beach. But during our last trip to Puerto Galera, we didn’t see any outrigger boats to Puerto Galera. The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) had plans of phasing out wooden-hulled boats last year, but I’m not sure if they have implemented this already.

HOW TO GET AROUND PUERTO GALERA

By tricycle.

The jeepney is the cheapest mode of transportation in Puerto Galera. However, as in any other place in the country, jeepneys follow a fixed route and tentative schedules. If you want better control of your time, the tricycle is better.

For short distances, most tricycle drivers charge P150-200 per ride (good for 3 pax). If you’re a group, that’s fine, but it’s a pain on the pockets if you’re traveling solo. A friend said that this is the tourist rate and that it is much lower for locals. I don’t know what the local rate is. However, for budgeting purposes, you can assume that it’s P200 per trip so you won’t go under.

You can also charter a tricycle to take you on a tour and see inland attractions like Tamaraw Falls, Virgin Beach, Mangyan Village, Infinity Farm and others for P800 (good for 3 pax).

By Motorcycle

If you have a driver’s license and you know how to drive a motorcycle, you can rent one and explore the town freely on your own. Rates vary depending on the type of motorcycle and the shop, but the standard rate is P400 per day.

If you choose to travel on two wheels, take extra care. Always wear a helmet even if many of the locals you see don’t.

To get to some islands and other coves, chartering a boat is the way to go. Here are the boat rates for trips from Muelle Port as of May 2019. A boat can usually accommodate up to 6 pax.

• Sandbar: P200 one-way, P400 round trip
• Buri Beach: P200 one-way, P400 round trip
• San Antonio: P230 one-way, P460 round trip
• Fridays: P250 one-way, P500 round trip
• Coco Beach: P250 one-way, P500 round trip
• Big La Laguna: P300 one-way, P600 round trip
• Small La Laguna: P350 one-way, P700 round trip
• Coral Garden: P400 one-way, P800 round trip
• Sabang Beach: P400 one-way, P800 round trip
• Long Beach: P500 one-way, P1000 round trip
• Haligi Beach: P500 one-way, P1000 round trip
• Bayanan Beach: P500 one-way, P1000 round trip
• Tamaraw Beach: P700 one-way, P1400 round trip
• White Beach: P1000 one-way, P2000 round trip
• Talipanan Beach: P1200 one-way, P2400 round trip

You can also ask the boatman to tour you around. You may choose three destinations and they will show you around for around P2000.

NIGHT RATES: Night rates are double the prices listed above.

THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO GALERA

Island hopping tour.

Most island hopping tours will take you to the following attractions:

• Haligi Beach
• Bayanan Beach
• Sandbar (sometimes replaced by Maniknik Beach)
• Coral Garden (snorkeling site)

You can also replace a site with another. Check out the list of beaches in the previous section above (HOW TO GET AROUND: BY BOAT) and pick 3 from that list.

The boat tour costs P1800-P2000 per boat , good for 6-8 passengers. An additional P200 fee is collected per person for the smaller paddle boat that will take you to the snorkeling site.

If you want to make the most of your trip, you may visit the following sites:

• San Antonio Island’s underwater cave
• Giant clams site
• Coral garden

Prepare to pay an extra P600 per person to see all three additional attractions.

Another way to explore Puerto Galera is by joining a tricycle tour, which will take you to some natural attractions that are easily accessible by land. A tricycle tour usually makes a stop at the following:

• Tamaraw Falls
• Virgin Beach
• Mangyan Village

You will also be stopping at some lookout spots along the way.

The tour costs P800 per tricycle, maximum of 3 passengers. The price excludes entrance fees and other fees per site including the following:

• Tamaraw Falls swimming area fee: P30 per person
• Umbrella kiosk rental fee: P140
• Barbeque grill rental fee: P50
• Table rental fee: P30
• Tamaraw Falls table rental and cooking fee: P150 per table
• Virgin Beach entrance fee: P30 per person

If tricycle is not your preferred mode of transportation, you may also charter a multi-cab or jeepney for P2000+ per vehicle. This will allow you to see other attractions including:

• Lantuyan Water Curtain
• Infinity Farm
• Turukan Falls
• Hanging Bridge

Diving Courses

Puerto Galera’s coast is lapped by the waves of the Verde Island Passage, which is described by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity citing the high concentration of marine species.

Home to over 40 established dive sites, it is one of the top diving destinations in the country. If you haven’t tried scuba diving before, Puerto Galera is also an ideal place to discover your love for the deep. There’s a lot of dive shops and resorts here and rates vary. But Fun Dives start at P1500 per dive. You can also find PADI introductory courses for around P3500 (1-2 hours, 1 dive).

White Beach and Nightlife

White Beach is Puerto Galera’s answer to Boracay. It is the most popular stretch of sand in the area and the most commercialized. You’ll find plenty of activities to enjoy here even at night. On weekends and holidays, there’s no running short of bars, booze, live bands, and fire dancers.

Water Sports

If you want an adrenaline rush, try some of these water rides. Best enjoyed as part of a group. Here are the rates:

• Unicorn: P2,500, good for 10 pax
• King Cobra: P2,500, good for 10 pax
• Flying Saucer: P2,000, good for 6 pax
• Fly Fish: P1,500, goof for 3 pax
• Jetski: P2,000 per 15 minutes

SAMPLE PUERTO GALERA ITINERARY

Below is a sample overnight Puerto Galera itinerary with breakdown of expenses. This itinerary assumes you’re a group of 3, splitting some expenses and staying at a resort in White Beach or Aninuan Beach. Feel free to make necessary adjustments to match your schedule, needs, or preferences.

If you spend P600 per night per person on accommodation, this itinerary will cost you around P4200 (USD 80, EUR 71, SGD 110) per person, with a small allowance for incidental expenses but excluding tips and shopping budget.

Returning on a Sunday without reserving a ticket can leave you stranded with no options from Muelle or Balatero. You will have to go to Calapan to return to Batangas.

Bulalacao Travel Guide: Rising Star of Oriental Mindoro

Bulalacao , the southernmost town of the province of Oriental Mindoro, is a paradise on its own right. How To Get to Bulalacao

San Jose, Occidental Mindoro is the nearest airport to Bulalacao. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have regular flights to San Jose from Clark and Manila, travel time takes 45 minutes. From San Jose airport, one can take a jeep or bus going to Roxas, Oriental Mindoro passing through Bulalacao via Roxas-Bulalacao-San Jose road, travel time is at least 45 minutes.

By Land/Sea

From manila, manila to batangas.

One can get to Bulalacao from Manila by land and sea by riding a bus going to Batangas Port for P197 fare (as of February 2019), travel time is two-and-a-half to three hours.

Accommodations in Bulalacao vary from budget inns and lodging houses to the island and beach resorts.

Bulalacao Southdrive Grill and Homestay, Felipa Lodge, Saints Peter and Paul Lodging and San Rosa Inn are located in the town proper and offer budget accommodation for as low as P400.00.

Meanwhile, Tambaron Green Beach Resort, Thelma’s Paradise and Target Island offer secluded island accommodation where guests can choose to stay in one of their rooms or pitch a tent in the beach. I have personally tried Tambaron Green Beach Resort and I had a great time with them.

nothing in the area is publicly used, as the time goes by people chose to use land transpo, so as far as I can remember it was used last way back 2003. Dont worry, boats are cheap though, you just have to know how to bargain. Most boats are the ones used for fishing… would suggest to rent that one instead…. as they are cheaper compared to the tour boat. Its not a dirty boat at all, most local fisher men only used it like 2-4 times in a week, trust me I grew up in the area ^_^

Aside from the very popular but still quite beautiful beaches of the island, people also come for the great outdoors featuring rivers, lakes, and gorgeous mountains. Diving is also a popular activity given that the island’s proximity to one of the richest diving spots in the country.

For most tourists, entry to Mindoro is via the regular ferries from the Southern Luzon province of Batangas . The port in Batangas is only two to three hours by land from Manila. The popular tourist destinations of Coron in Palawan and Caticlan (for Boracay) are also connected to Mindoro via ferries. Those who wish to fly to the island can do so via commercial flights from Manila to San Jose Airport in the southern part of Occidental Mindoro. Buses and minivans run to the various towns along the coast of the island.

Mindoro island, as with the rest of the Philippines, has its monsoon season in the months of June to early December. When visiting during this time of the year, it is recommended to make contingency plans for ferry and flight cancellations. The best time to visit are anywhere from January to March. December holiday season and the school holiday season of April and May are also good in terms of weather, but it is best to plan ahead during these times as tourist destinations become crowded.

The main strip in Puerto Galera is called White Beach. A number of lodges, hotels, and beach-side restaurants have been set up here. Those who prefer a little more peace and quiet can stay in the hotels and private resorts which have been built on their own islands and coves.

A good alternative to White Beach is Talipanan Beach. This is further west along the northern coast of Mindoro Island. The beach is quieter but still has tourist conveniences like accommodations and restaurants.

Just a short hike from Puerto Galera is Talipanan Falls . The waterfall is highly recommended because very few people venture out here making the pools at the bottom of the cascade in the middle of the jungle a very good place for swimming.

Another recommended beach area is the town of Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro. Visitors can also head to North Pandan Island, just off the coast from Sablayan, for more beautiful sandy beaches.

For adventure seekers, the island of Alibatan, also called Target Island, is a good place to go to. Located off the southern coast of Mindoro in Bulalacao Bay, Alibatan Island can be reached via outrigger boats from the town of Baco. The tiny island has white-sand beaches and is noted for its wildlife featuring turtles and seagulls.

On the other side of Mindoro, adventure seekers can base themselves in the town of Calapan. It is the provincial capital of Oriental Mindoro and has many eco-tourism sites of note. Island-hopping is a recommended activity covering the islands of Baco-Chico or Silonay where visitors can go swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. River-cruising or even kayaking is also possible along the Baruyan River, also in Calapan. The river ends in the peaceful Caluangan Lake.

Hiking in Mindoro will almost certainly involve the highest peak on the island: Mount Halcon. With an elevation of more than 8,400 feet above sea level, trekking to the summit, which will involve multi-day camping, is possible. The summit is especially beautiful as it rises above the clouds, earning the nickname Lagpas Ulap (‘past the clouds’ in Tagalog).

Trekking around Mount Halcon is also highly recommended because the area is rich in wildlife. This is especially true for bird-watchers as Mindoro is home to local and migratory species. Visitors will also spot the tamaraw, which is endemic to Mindoro. The tamaraw is the straight-horned relative of the common water buffalo.

Mindoro is the ancestral home of the Mangyan peoples. This is an umbrella term encompassing the many ethnolinguistic groups of Mindoro, namely, the Iraya, Alangan, Tadyawan, Tawbuid, Buhid, and Hanunoo. They have distinct languages but their vocabularies do share 40 per cent common words on average. The Hanunoo have their own script related to the Brahmic scripts used in other parts of Southeast Asia like Sumatra and Java.

Every Friday, people from remote Mangyan villages in the mountains trek for hours to the river in Bait, Southern Mindoro to set up a market and trade their goods. The produce often includes crops such as bananas, camote, and various green vegetables. These are traded for lowland wares such as clothing and footwear. Most visitors head to Mindoro Oriental, which is more accessible and developed than its neighbour across the mountains, to dive in the marine reserve at Puerto Galera, in the north of the province.

Nearby Mount Malasimbo is also protected because of the biodiversity of its thickly jungled slopes. To the east of Puerto Galera, near the port of Calapan, is Mount Halcon – at 2587m, Mindoro’s tallest peak and a difficult climb even for experienced mountaineers.

The south of the island is less populated than the north, with few tourists making it as far as Roxas on the southeast coast unless they’re taking a ferry to Caticlan from Bulalacao.

Aside from a few intrepid wildlife enthusiasts and divers around Sablayan, Mindoro Occidental remains wonderfully undiscovered. Travellers with flexible travel plans will have their efforts rewarded with wild jungle-covered mountains, remote beaches, and maybe meetings with a few local Mangyan people along the way.

Beaches, wildlife and some of the world’s best diving and snorkelling, there’s so much to do in Mindoro that you could never get bored. Here are the best things to do in Mindoro.

#1 Laze on the fine beaches around Puerto Galera

One of the country’s most popular resorts, Puerto Galera (meaning “Port of the Galleons”) boasts some of the most diverse coral reef diving in Asia and gorgeous, sugar-sand beaches, as a result of which the whole area is often mobbed during national holidays.

Arriving by ferry is a memorable experience, the boat slipping gently through aquamarine waters past a series of headlands fringed with haloes of sand and coconut trees.

Brilliant white yachts lie at anchor in the innermost bay and in the background looms the brooding hulk of Mount Malasimbo, invariably crowned with a ring of cumulus cloud.

#2 Climb Mount Halcon

Rugged Mount Halcon rears up dramatically from the coastal plain of Mindoro Oriental, 28km southwest of Calapan. At an altitude of 2586m, it’s Mindoro’s highest peak, and is surrounded by some of the most extensive tracts of rainforest on the island.

Conquering the summit is a major target of mountaineers from all over the globe, though since 2006 the trails have been officially closed. In 2013 hikes unofficially resumed, with the blessing of the local Mangyan community, though the situation remains confusing.

Don’t even think about climbing Mount Halcon alone – hire a Mangyan guide at Bayanan, just south of Calapan city.

#3 Meet the Indigenous Mangyan

It’s estimated that there are around one hundred thousand of Mindoro’s original inhabitants, the Mangyan, left on the island, who have a way of life not much changed since they fought against the invading Spanish in the sixteenth century.

With little role in the mainstream Philippine economy, the Mangyan, who divide into eight groups, subsist through slash-and-burn farming of taro and yams, a practice the elders insist on retaining as part of their culture despite the destruction it causes to forests.

You may well see Mangyan as you travel around the island, often wearing only a loincloth and machete and carrying produce for market, but if you want to actually visit them in their villages, it‘s best to go with a guide who can act as an interpreter.

You can break the ice with gifts such as cigarettes, sweets and matches, but if you want to take photographs make sure you have permission. Treks to Mangyan villages are possible in several parts of the island but the Mangyan Heritage Center in Calapan offers an in-depth introduction to the culture.

#4 See rare wildlife at Mounts Iglit-Baco National Park

The isolated and wonderfully raw jungles of Mounts Iglit-Baco National Park are dominated by the twin peaks of Mount Baco (2488m) and Mount Iglit (2364m). It can take up to two days of tough hiking to reach the peak of Mount Iglit, while the vegetation is so dense that there have been no officially recorded ascents of Mount Baco.

There are also a number of more leisurely treks through the foothills to areas in which you are most likely to see the endangered tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis), a dwarf buffalo endemic to the island; numbers are now rising every year, and the 2016 annual headcount identified some 430 individual animals in the wild.

The Sablayan Eco-Tourism Office can advise on visits to the Tamaraw Conservation Program, known as the “Gene Pool Farm”, a small laboratory where scientists are trying to breed the tamaraw in captivity.

Apart from tamaraws, the park is also prime habitat for the Philippine deer, wild pigs and other endemic species such as the Mindoro scops owl.

#5 Snorkel North Pandan Island

Idyllic North Pandan Island, ringed by a halo of fine white sand, coral reefs and coconut palms, lies 2km off the west coast of Mindoro. In 1994 a sanctuary was established around the eastern half of the island so the marine life is exceptional; with a mask and snorkel you can see big grouper, all sorts of coral fishes and even the occasional turtle. Sharks are very rare, however.

The island is the site of the well-run Pandan Island Resort, but is open to day guests from 8am to 6pm. There’s plenty to keep you occupied on and around the island itself, including kayaking, jungle treks, windsurfing and sailing.

#6 Dive Apo Reef

Lying about 30km off the west coast of Mindoro, magnificent Apo Reef Marine Natural Park stretches 26km from north to south and 20km east to west, making it a significant marine environment and one of the world’s great dive destinations.

There are two main atolls, separated by deep channels, and a number of shallow lagoons with beautiful white sandy bottoms. Only in three places does the coral rise above the sea’s surface, creating the islands of Cayos de Bajo, Binangaan and Apo, the largest.

Apo Island is home to a ranger station and a lighthouse, and you can spend a magical night here in tents (turtles often lay eggs on the beach), though the experience comes at a price.

The diving is really something special, with sightings of manta rays, sharks (even hammerheads), barracuda, tuna and turtles fairly common. Most of the Philippines’ 450 species of coral are here, from tiny bubble corals to huge gorgonian sea fans and brain corals, along with hundreds of species of smaller reef fishes such as angelfish, batfish, surgeonfish and jacks.

Whilst there are other areas where accommodation is available across Mindoro, travellers tend to stay in and around Puerto Galera, in Calapan or on North Pandan Island.

Puerto Galera

With direct boats from Batangas to Sabang and White Beach, there’s really little need to stay in Poblacion (Puerto Galera town); that said, if you want to escape the beach scene, there are a couple of decent hotels here .

Accommodation choices in Sabang range from small resorts to more expensive dive resort options. Generally speaking, the accommodation to the west of the main road, which is closer to the nightlife, is pricier than that to the quieter east.

White Beach is now very popular, and room prices have rocketed. It can be hard to find a decent budget room, particularly at weekends and holidays; it’s definitely worth booking in advance. Aninuan Beach has the best range of both upmarket and mid-range resorts, while Talipanan has some good budget options.

Accommodation options in Calapan don’t set the pulse racing and most are located outside the centre. Note that wi-fi at the places listed below is usually only available in public areas, such as the lobby or the restaurant, and is pretty unreliable.

North Pandan Island

Pandan Island Resort is the well-run, back-to-nature private hideaway developed by the French adventurer who “discovered” the island in 1986. As well as the budget rooms, there are standard double bungalows, larger bungalows for four and family houses for up to six. During the diving season (Nov–May) the island is so popular that all rooms are often taken, so it’s important to book in advance.

Restaurants are quite overpriced in the whole of the Puerto Galera area, so be prepared to pay more than you might be used to in other parts of the Philippines. Most of the area’s resorts have their own simple restaurants, and in-hotel places are the only option at Aninuan and Talipanan.

Outside of these, there are good restaurant scenes at Sabang, though the places here are generally more expensive, and at White Beach, which has some small-scale cafés and restaurants serving simple, relatively inexpensive food.

A walk along the traffic-clogged length of J.P. Rizal St in town will take you past the usual Filipino fast-food outlets, including Jollibee, Chowking and Mister Donut.

Sit-down dining options in San José principally revolve around the hotels, and of these, the best options are the restaurants at Sikatuna Beach Hotel, El Mora Hotel and the canteen at the Mindoro Plaza.

If staying on North Pandan Island, guests at the Pandan Island Resort are required to take at least one buffet meal at the resort restaurant every day, and this is no bad thing: the chef dishes up excellent European and Filipino cuisine (try the tangy fish salad in vinegar) and the beach bar serves some unforgettable tropical cocktails.

Some of the best restaurants in Mindoro include:

• Verandah, Puerto Galera Perched high above the beach, this is the best restaurant in Small La Laguna and serves salads, excellent Australian Wagyu beef steaks and pizzas, either in the tasteful woodfurnished interior or out on a breezy terrace overlooking the ocean. There’s also a decent wine list.
• Tina’s Restaurant, Puerto Galera At the far eastern end of the beach, this is a pleasant little restaurant with chequered tablecloths, bamboo chairs and nice sea views, serving a range of Filipino, German and Asian dishes at reasonable prices, as well as breakfasts. The mango pancakes are exceptionally good.
• Akong Bakery, San José The best bakery in town is a 24hr haven of tempting aromas – fresh-from-the-oven pandesal (a soft, sweet and slightly salty bread roll) and other pastries are knocked out throughout the day for a handful of pesos.

It's possible to fly to Mindoro via Manila, but getting a combined bus-boat ticket is the best way to get to the island.

San José airport In the south of Mindoro Occidental, the airport is served by one daily flight (1hr) from Manila with Cebu Pacific. There is no airport serving Puerto Galera.

A good way to reach Puerto Galera and Sabang from Manila is to buy a combined bus-boat ticket with Si-Kat. The bus departs from their office at City State Tower, 1315 Mabini St, Ermita.

The main ferry port for departures to Muelle pier in Puerto Galera is Batangas City. There are frequent daily departures from Batangas to Muelle pier, Sabang and White Beach on large outriggers, easy to find on arrival at Batangas Port Terminal 3.

All passengers on chartered outriggers must also pay the terminal fee, and an environmental fee upon arrival.

There are two direct bus routes to Mindoro from Manila (3 daily) from Ali Mall in Cubao and Pasay to San José, both via Batangas port (10hr).

It's possible to visit the highlights of Mindoro in 3-4 days, including some time snorkeling in Puerto Galera and soaking in its nightlife, diving Apo Reef Natural Park and walking the foothills of Mount Halcon.

However, take a week. This way you can also have some beach time, visit the capital Calapan and head to the hills to experience a local way of life.

Getting around Mindoro can mean using numerous types of transport. Use tricycles and jeepneys for short journeys and buses to link to bigger towns across the islands. Here's how to get around Mindoro:

By tricycle

Tricycles are always available and the most convenient way to zip between the various towns and beaches in Mindoro, though drivers are notorious for ripping off tourists. Ask at your accommodation what the going rate ought to be, and once you’ve got an idea of local prices, you’ll need to bargain hard.

You can arrange bangkas (small dugout canoes) between just about any beach; rates will depend on how long you need the boat for and your haggling skills. Small pump boats travel between Sabang and Big/Small La Laguna beaches.

Jeepneys shuttle back and forth between major points like Sabang and Poblacion, although these won’t leave until they are overflowing. Most routes stop running after 5pm, when you’ll be at the mercy of the tricycle drivers.

By scooter/motorbike

You can rent scooters and motorbikes across the island.

If you’re heading for Puerto Galera, many resorts will send transport to meet you if you book and pay in advance. Otherwise, there are buses that connect all major towns.

Generally, the best time to visit Mindoro is during the dry season, which runs from December to May. The weather during this period is warm and pleasant, making it perfect for outdoor activities like beach hopping, island hopping, and hiking.

If you want to witness the island's festivities and culture, you might want to plan your visit during the Mindoro Day celebration, which happens every 15th of June. The festival showcases the province's unique culture and heritage through street dancing, parades, and other cultural events.

However, if you are looking to see and swim with whale sharks, the best time to visit Mindoro is from November to May, when these gentle giants migrate to the waters of Donsol Bay.
