Araba-Álava

Basque Country

Laguardia is the largest town of Rioja Alavesa and one of the most beautiful. It is famous throughout the world for its wines and for being the birthplace of the fabulist Samaniego.

Rioja Alavesa has a very suitable climate for wine cultivation , which have given it well-deserved fame. It is also an area abundant in archaeological remains, with Paleolithic, Roman and medieval testimonies. The entire urban area of Laguardia is surrounded by walls that were built at the beginning of the 19th century. 13th century.

At the ends of its main street are the churches of San Juan , Romanesque in origin although it currently has a mix of several styles, and Santa María de los Reyes . It has an impressive Gothic façade, and is one of the few from that period that preserves the original polychrome. At one end of the walled enclosure -on the “El Collado” walk- is the monument dedicated to the fabulist Samaniego, who was a native of the town. It is definitely worth talking a stroll through Laguardia, since its entire centre is of artistic and historical interest, as well as visiting one of its many wineries to taste and purchase some of its magnificent wines. Very close to the urban centre of Laguardia are the dolmen of San Martín and the Settlement of La Hoya , whose remains seem to date back to the first millennium BC. You can also take a trip to the “Las Lagunas” nature spot, declared a protected biotope.

Laguardia is the quintessential Riojan hamlet.  It’s honey-coloured streets are both cinematic and, around meal time, so enticingly aromatic.  It is a beautifully kept 13th century fortified town .

As with all walled cities such as Carcassonne or Lucca, it has a magical mediaeval atmosphere. What makes Laguardia extra special is what lies below the cobbled streets. It’s underground network of 300 or so caves – many of which are still used to produce and store wine – is larger than the town above. To protect the emmental-like structures below – no vehicles are allowed into the centre.

It’s a lovely place to visit a winery, have a long lunch, take a stroll around the town by the tree-lined Paseo del Collado while enjoying views of the surrounding vineyards and the Sierra de Cantabria and then savour a coffee in a square

As a base for exploring the Rioja wine region, Laguardia is ideal.  A tranquil alternative to nearby Logroño that puts you right in contact with what this area is really all about.

Laguardia, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain

Only ten minutes from our town is Laguardia, a unique villa located on top of a hill and perfectly surrounded by walls. Discover its secrets in this post.

visit laguardia spain

We like to remember it: we are lucky. We are because we work on a family project, in a sector that we are passionate about and in a region that makes us fall in love. Because Rioja Alavesa is a privileged region . A region where, among many other things, you can find jewels like Laguardia, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. And about them we talk in this post.

Ayuntamiento en la Plaza Mayor de Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa, País Vasco)

Of course, Elciego , the town of which we are, is our favorite corner in the world, but only ten minutes from here is a unique place . Located on top of a hill and perfectly surrounded by walls: Laguardia, a real fort.

How to get to Laguardia

Due to its tourist importance, its distinction as the capital of Rioja Alavesa and its location between Logroño (20 minutes) and Vitoria (50 minutes) , it is logical to think that it is quite easy to reach Laguardia. If you come by car you can do most of the road by highway and only a few kilometers through a beautiful national road between vineyards.

Ver esta publicación en Instagram Una publicación compartida de Bodegas Valdelana (1583) Rioja (@bodegasvaldelana) el 24 Sep, 2018 a las 8:04 PDT

If you do not have your own vehicle, you will be happy to know that it is quite simple and fast to get to Laguardia by bus . From Vitoria and / or Logroño, there are buses with hourly frequency of the company Álava Bus go there.

Laguardia, a town with a lot of history

Laguardia accumulates a lot of history between its walls. Although there are prehistoric archaeological sites in the surroundings of this town, its foundation dates back to the 10th century as a castle for the Kingdom of Navarre , a region to which it belonged.

Torre campanario en Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa, País Vasco)

It was in the middle of the 12th century when this castle would become a village , with its consequent population growth. Since then, the town was gaining in importance and the wall extended beyond the castle.

Casas amuralladas en Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa, País Vasco)

We go back now to the sixteenth century, at which time Laguardia would become part of Alava . Then Laguardia was for three centuries apart from all war, which allowed a strong development, largely thanks to wine.

Cartel de "Wine" en Laguardia. El vino es uno de los elementos fundamentales en el desarrollo de esta localidad de Rioja Alavesa

The coming wars in the nineteenth century (War of Independence and Carlist) and the postwar Civil War in the twentieth century, greatly damaged this town , losing much of its walls along the way. Luckily, the ensuing years of peace and prosperity, and the growth of the wine and tourism industry, has allowed Laguardia to recover the splendor of yesteryear.

What to see in Laguardia

Although less than 2000 inhabitants live in Laguardia, it is not surprising that in a town with so much history it retains so much heritage . But what can you see in it?

Visit the wall and its doors

Although the last wars damaged the perfect wall that historically surrounded Laguardia, it is still possible to visit a good part of that defensive structure and the entrance gates to the fortification : The Gate of Páganos (west), Mercadal (south), San Juan (southeast), Santa Engracia (northeast) and Carnicerías (east).

Puerta amurallada de Laguardia, uno de los pueblos más bonitos de Rioja Alavesa (País Vasco)

Go through its cobbled streets

One of the greatest charms that Laguardia has is that cars cannot enter the walled area, so walking around becomes irresistible . It is difficult to get lost in the few streets that run through Laguardia, although all of them, especially the Mayor and Páganos, deserve your visit.

visit laguardia spain

The main square and its clock

Wherever you go you will not be able to escape from the Plaza Mayor, the center of Laguardia. There is the town hall, the tourist office, a few flowers and the famous carrillón, a clock where you can see some automatons dancing a melody typical of local festivals . You can see it at 12, 14, 17 and 20h in summer and winter, and 13 and 22 h. also in summer.

Church of Santa María de los Reyes

In addition to his watch, one of the great peculiarities of Laguardia is that it retains one of the few polychrome porticoes in Spain .

Pórtico policromado en la iglesia de Santa María de Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa)

Although this portico is from the 14th century and was colored in the 17th century, the church of Santa María de los Reyes began to be built in the 12th century . Inside there is also a spectacular altarpiece.

Retablo en la iglesia de Santa María de Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa, País Vasco)

Church of San Juan

It is also worth the church of San Juan , initiated in Romanesque style but concluded in the Gothic. Brief but intense.

The Abacial Tower

Very close to the church of Santa María de los Reyes is the Abacial tower, a castle-bell tower of Romanesque origin from where there are exceptional views of Rioja Alavesa.

Laguardia Gardens

In Laguardia you can find beautiful gardens where you can walk calmly at sunset and stop to rest next to the monument of Félix María de Samaniego , one of the most illustrious citizens that this town has given.

Estatua al fabulista Félix María de Samaniego en Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa, País Vasco)

Underground cellars

As we have already mentioned, wine is and has been one of the main economic supports of this town (and of our entire region), so it is not surprising that the wineries conform their urban landscape . Although at first glance you don’t see it.

visit laguardia spain

And is that the subsoil of Laguardia is a maze of wineries . Many of them can be visited either through the same wineries, shops, hotels or the tourist office.

Where to sleep if you see Laguardia

Now that we have shown you Laguardia, we can only recommend some accommodation in case you visit the town. And although the same villa has a good offer of accommodations, from Bodegas Valdelana we can not stop recommending you to spend the night in our accommodation in Elciego , 10 minutes from there. Our 1583 winery is waiting for you .

Laguardia medieval walls

Also famous for being the birthplace of Samaniego, fabulist huge impact. Samiego has left to Laguardia his fables and the admirable house where he was born. The Church of Santa María de los Reyes, the tenth century, was perhaps a Templar Monastery. It is another attraction of Laguardia. It is also worth to visit the church of Santa María de Berberana, with its Romanesque chapel which  is the only one in La Rioja with a square apse. Near Laguardia there are a number of villages with lots of interest and beautiful areas for hiking or enjoying nature, such as Hoya, of great archaeological interest. There are a number of restaurants that will give joy to the most discerning palates within the walls.

Charming villages Spain Laguardia

What other things can you do in Laguardia ? First, and most importantly undoubtedly, is to walk along the cobblestone streets. It is a marvel to roam around and admire the noble houses, beautiful balconies, Plaza Mayor …

Most tourists find the romantic walk of  El Collado a very special place. The walk is located in the northern part of the town. The walk can be started by the East or West of Laguardia. This walk offers beautiful trees and views of the Sierra de Cantabria (and Ysios) Breathtaking indeed!

Another great attraction of Laguardia is the Church of Santa Maria de los Reyes and his lovely porch. The clock in the Plaza Mayor, the Abbey Tower and the Church of San Bautista are three important arguments for the visit to Laguardia.

The underground cellars of Laguardia

Something we cannot of course forget about and which also deserves a visit are the local wineries. Laguardia itself is a large underground cellar. Some of the cellars of the Houses and mansions can be visited today (either as a restaurant, or even because they still age wine). The surrondings of Laguardia offer beautiful scenery of vineyards. We recommend the road from Laguardia to Lapuebla de la Barca, though there are many more with a high interest for those who love a landscape full of vineyards.

The wineries and local wine are of great quality. The local cuisine of Laguardia is high quality. The city also offers a number of restaurants to eat at reasonable prices with quality products. Taverns with pintxos and a good selection of local food stores and wine shops logical

Laguardia pilgrim Camino

There are many more arguments to visit Laguardia. Highly recommend, and visible from the walled city, and are protected biotypes outside of Laguardia.

One of the jewels in the Rioja Wine region's crown is this lovely walled, hilltop town in Alava at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria escarpment. Laguardia's narrow pedestrianised streets, so cool and peaceful on a hot summer day, leap into life in early evening as the townsfolk indulge in their family strolls, calling at the scattered Tapas Bars, or patrolling the gardens along the walls under the glowering face of the mountain. On mild evenings they converge on the 'Balcon', a prominent viewing point on the west side of the town, to watch the sun go down.

Founded by King Sancho Abarca in 1164 it was given its name (Guardia) because of its strategic importance to the then Kingdom of Navarra. Subsequently it became part of Castile and then the Basque Country. However it is located in an important part of the Rioja wine region, that of Alavesa, and boasts some superb Bodegas on the town's outskirts, while within the walls are ancient cellars, of which some are still in use, the occasional impressive mansion and, above all a lovely church.

This is a popular place for visiting Madrileños and Bilbainans who stay at one of the high class, boutique hotels and indulge in the excellent cocina of their dining rooms. During the day they might choose to visit any of the dozen or so exclusive Bodegas here and at nearby towns like Elciego and Paganos. Laguardia is littered with charming shops, many selling superb selections of Rioja wines, peppers, asparagus, olives, olive oil and other delicacies in tins or jars, aswell as relative wine artifacts.

This town has led the way in stimulating a drive towards attracting more tourism all over the region, so if you cannot get a hotel room here, don't despair there are others in the vicinity and you can still enjoy a visit to Laguardia.

Laguardia, Spain: Restaurants, Wineries & Hotels

Matt

With a history as broad as the vineyards that surround it – this beautiful, small and cozy town was constructed in the 10th century. Even though it’s since been decommissioned, Laguardia, Spain was originally set up as a defense town. Currently, only about 1505 people call this town home.

Laguardia is situated in the southern part of the province Araba/Álava. It falls within the greater wine region of La Rioja Alavesa. If you’re looking for Laguardia, Spain mapped out – just drag your pointer south of Bilbao and a little bit to the north of Logroño .

The town is nestled upon a hilltop, enclosed in a stone wall fortress, and encompassed by vineyards from every angle. This is a definite must-see when traveling through the Spanish Basque country. It is quite rare for foreign travelers to have heard of this small gem. So, you might be wondering what you could do here once you arrive.

Fret not, we’ve done some digging and have found some jewels for you to add to your bucket list.

Things to do Near Laguardia

In the town square, a little clock chimes away, on the hour, at 12 pm, 2 pm, 5 pm, and 8 pm daily. This short song beckons you to dance along with it. It’s one of the aspects that make this little town feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine.

Locals welcome you with vigor in this medieval and old-fashioned style town. Their merriment and hospitality will make you feel right at home and at ease. On the plus side, you can walk everywhere without needing any transportation besides for arrival and departure.

Laguardia maps its way underground as well. During war times, the inhabitants would use underground tunnels to move around. It runs throughout the city and has helped many citizens flee safely to the hills whenever necessary. These days, it’s used mostly for wine storage and some interesting “ cave tours ”.

The Church of Santa Maria de Los Reyes is a must-see for the architectural and cultural buffs. The cathedral is well-cherished as a monument of cultural interest. This Romanesque-style building displays architectural features of Gothic, Renaissance, and Basque influence.

Restaurants in Laguardia

There are some enticing activities around Laguardia, as well. Most significantly, there are unparalleled wineries and restaurants. Marques de Risca is known for the amazing wines that are produced at his winery. This tri-factor establishment consists of a hotel, winery, and restaurant. The Michelin star rating uplifts this restaurant and the standards it holds.

If one Michelin recognized restaurant is not enough, how about two? You’ll find great service and tasty food conveniently located just 5 minutes outside of Laguardia in Paganos. Hector Oribe Restaurant received the Michelin Plate in 2024 for its signature dishes that pay homage to Spanish traditions.

While the above-mentioned seems to be the popular favorites (for obvious reasons), there are restaurants within Laguardia that are just as fabulous. Most of them double as a winery or bodega so keep reading to find out where to go.

Laguardia: One of Spain’s most beautiful villages

Feb 22, 2024 | Articles , Most Popular Places

visit laguardia spain

In the picturesque wine country of Rioja Alavesa, you’ll encounter the beautiful Spanish town of Laguardia. With its cobblestone streets, medieval walls, and breathtaking views of the Ebro valley, it’s not surprising that Laguardia is often regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.

Visiting Laguardia is like taking a step back in time. The village’s rich history dates back to the 10th century, and its well-preserved medieval walls enclose a maze of narrow streets, enchanting squares, and ancient houses, all of which add to its old-world charm. The striking Church of Santa María de los Reyes, with its colorful Gothic facade, offers an intriguing peek into Laguardia’s past.

Laguardia is within the three wine-growing regions—Rioja Alta, Alavesa, and Rioja Baja, renowned for its Rioja wines. The village is home to numerous wineries, including Casa Primicia, the oldest original winery in Spain dating back to the 15th century. This historical vineyard is just one of many that wine enthusiasts can explore during their visit. Tours of these wineries provide an insight into the history and winemaking process, from grape cultivation to the final bottling. Additionally, visitors get the opportunity to taste the world-class Rioja wines that the area is so well-known for. These wines, rich with complex flavors and a storied history, are a testament to the region’s dedication to viticulture.

In the heart of this historic village, you’ll find the exquisite El Retiro del Obispo hotel. A special “casa rural” or country home nestled in the medieval stone wall surrounding Laguardia. This lovingly restored and furnished boutique hotel is a blend of history and modern luxury, offering an experience that is truly unforgettable. Terri and Robert, the owners of the hotel, have garnered praise for their attention to detail and their warm hospitality. Guest reviews often highlight these aspects, painting a picture of a hotel stay that goes beyond the ordinary.

El Retiro del Obispo is not just a hotel but a historical monument in itself. Over the centuries, the building has served various purposes, from a bishop’s retreat to a nobleman’s residence. Today, it stands as a symbol of Laguardia’s rich history, providing guests an opportunity to immerse themselves in the past of this beautiful village.

visit laguardia spain

Another highlight of a visit to Laguardia is the opportunity to savor the delectable Spanish Pintxos, or Pinchos as they are known in other parts of Spain. This region is renowned for these bite-sized snacks, which are typically enjoyed with a glass of local wine. Pintxos are a beloved part of Spanish cuisine and offer a wide range of flavors and textures. As a tourist, you may find yourself in a local bar or restaurant, presented with a counter laden with various Pintxos, each one a unique combination of ingredients skewered onto a piece of bread. From traditional options like Spanish omelette or jamón serrano to more adventurous ones like anchovies with peppers or stuffed piquillo peppers, there’s a pintxo to suit everyone’s taste. Trying Pintxos for the first time is a gastronomic adventure, offering an authentic taste of the local culture and a chance to interact with locals in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

While Laguardia’s charm can captivate any visitor, its strategic location also makes it an ideal base for exploring other northern spain. The vibrant cities of Bilbao, Burgos &Pamplona, are all approximately a 100km drive. Bilbao boasts the world-class Guggenheim Museum, Burgos is home to the historic Cathedral, Pamplona offers a lively street life, and Logroño is famous for its gastronomy.

A trip to Laguardia is more than just a vacation; it’s a journey through time and a sensory feast. Whether you’re exploring the historic sites, savoring the local cuisine, or simply drinking in the breathtaking views, a visit to this Spanish gem is sure to leave you with lasting memories.

rioja alavesa wineries in Spain

Rioja Alavesa Wineries – Visit Laguardia

At  Totally Spain   we’ve organised hundreds of winery holidays to Laguardia and the Rioja Alavesa wineries and we continue to be bowled over by the towns and villages, the wineries and the views. We revisited Rioja Alavesa  last weekend, taking one of our custom packages and have come back buzzing. Here’s what we packed in:-

Interested in visiting the Rioja Alavesa wineries?

1 What do we like in the Rioja Alavesa Wine Region?

We love visiting Riojan wineries which are now very well set-up for visitors.  Many bodegas are stunningly beautiful, their wines are exciting and varied, and the backdrop of the mountains and valleys is beyond words. Of course, the Riojan cuisine, as always, is amazing. Soul food with wine. We had a wonderful lunch on the first day and really tasty food at our 4 star Hotel Villa de Laguardia for dinner and buffet breakfast. And even our roadside snack in a little bar in a village was delicious.

One of the stunning squares in Laguardia where we had a lovely lazy lunch after visiting a winery

2 What did we do in Rioja in just over 24hrs?

Tight on time we still managed to tour 3 wineries, laze over lunch in a cosy mediaeval plaza in Laguardia, people-watch aplenty while sipping delicious coffees, had a spa treatment and, to cap it all, ate our evening meal by the outdoor hotel pool while watching the sun set over the vineyards. Magical.

One of the many local wineries worth visiting is the Ysios winery, designed by Santiago de Calatrava

3 Why do we keep recommending Laguardia to our clients?

Laguardia is the quintessential Riojan hamlet.  It’s honey-coloured streets are both cinematic and, around meal time, so enticingly aromatic.  It is a beautifully kept 13th century fortified town.  As with all walled cities such as Carcassonne or Lucca, it has a magical mediaeval atmosphere. What makes Laguardia extra special is what lies below the cobbled streets. It’s underground network of 300 or so caves – many of which are still used to produce or store wine – is larger than the town above. To protect the Emmental-like structures below – the only vehicles allowed into the centre are the tractors delivering the grapes to the caves in September – so it’s extremely child-friendly!

It’s a lovely place to visit a winery, have a long lunch, take a stroll around the town by the tree-lined Paseo del Collado and savour a coffee in a square – which is exactly what we did!  We even met a great friend – Maria – owner of the wonderful Erletxe casa rural – and purveyor of delicious honey. Our lunch in a restaurant called El Portico on Calle Mayor beside the Abbot’s Tower included typical dishes such as ‘patatas a la riojana’ – a great stew with potatoes, smoked paprika and chorizo and succulent  ‘rabo de buey’ – oxtail stew. The wine included in our set-course-menu was called Ayesa made in Laguardia. Doesn’t get more slow food than that. We had coffees at Hospederia Los Pasajes on the Plaza Mayor from where we saw the cutest chime at 5pm.

Another of the more popular bodegas is the Marques de Riscal winery which has a titanium hotel, spa and restaurant designed by Frank Gehry

4 Rioja Winery Visit #1 El Fabulista

El  Fabulista is a traditional cave-winery in the centre of Laguardia that produces young wines from tempranillo grapes. Here they still press their grapes by foot! Our guide Julia was very helpful and explained the traditional techniques of wine-making. She spoke of the former owner of the palace and cave – Felix Samaniego (a well known writer of fables and erotic fiction). She said that by request, they can provide an actor dressed in period costume to read passages of the writer’s work during the wine-tasting section of the tour.

The gorgeous oak barrels at the Ysios winery near Laguardia

5 Rioja Winery Visit #2 Ysios

Next was the  Ysios winery – now owned by the Domecq group which is part of the Pernod-Ricard empire. The winery commissioned the Spanish architect Santiago de Calatrava to pick the site and design the bodega and that he did in 2001.  Our guide Silvia took us around the building and illustrated the architect’s work as well as that of the winemaker. Ysios is also a tempranillo producer – working with a number of artists and celebrities to create their wines.  A great visit and wonderful wine!

6 Rioja Winery Visit #3 Marques de Riscal

And from the new we went to the very very old. The Marques de Riscal winery was established in 1858. The tour weaves in and out of some wonderful gardens and historic buildings. Lots of walking around meant we got to know lots of the people on the tour and were sad to part from our new acquaintances when it was time to go. There we saw the exterior of Frank Gehry’s City of Wine building (a hotel, spa and Michelin-star restaurant completed in 2006) but it wasn’t the focus of the tour. We did get to see a lot of the production stages of their wines and were like children on a school tour when we were taken to the bottling and boxing section of the winery – something we didn’t get to see elsewhere. Our guide was again fantastic. As with all wineries, it’s possible to purchase wine at the shop. In addition to its wines, the Marques de Riscal also sells some food produce and merchandise. The winery also has a large café.

Old production techniques are still maintained for some wines at Marques de Riscal

Unfortunately we didn’t leave enough time to visit the producer of reds, rose and white wines  –  Baigorri   – we had run out of time. Next time we are not missing out on lunch at what is one of our favourite wineries. The views of the valleys are spectacular from the building designed by Iñaki Aspiazu and completed in 2005. We recommend you try it out.

7 When is the best time to visit Laguardia & the Rioja Alavesa wineries?

This is a great destination all-year-round.  We’ve enjoyed Rioja Alavesa during busy grape harvest season in September/October when  the vineyards are alive with activity.  In June when everything starts to bloom and then in again in Autumn for the colourful foliage.  And in December, when the weather was chilly, hearty Riojan stews and warm welcomes. This time – in early May we were able to appreciate the snow-capped mountain tops of Ezcaray (part of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains) whilst eating outdoors and basking in that embracing spring time sunshine.  Laguardia is a unique and affordable holiday in the peak summer months as well as it is off the beaten tourist trail. Local fiestas worth noting are   the Annual Harvest Festival in September and in Laguardia the F iesta of San Felices is celebrated from the last week of June with a Pamplona-style cow run through the town.

Stunning views from Laguardia of the valleys of vineyards and the Sierra Cantabria mountains capped in snow

8 How to get to Laguardia & the Rioja Alavesa wineries?

  • 90 mins drive (123km) from Bilbao Airport
  • 2hrs 15mins drive (210km) from Biarritz Airport
  • 2hrs07 mins drive (210km) from Santander Airport/Ferry port
  • 3hrs 21mins drive (345km) from Madrid Airport. You can also fly from Madrid into Logroño airport 17km from Laguardia.

9 How to get around Laguardia and the Rioja Alavesa wineries?

We recommend Rioja Alavesa as a self-drive holiday . You will need a car to visit almost all the wineries and to enjoy the surrounding villages. As always, we can arrange a driver-guide for you if you prefer not to drive yourself. Read our guide to the benefits of a private driver and guide in Spain .  Visits to the wineries need to be pre-booked and we can take care of reservations for any of the wineries in this the Rioja Alavesa and also the nearby Rioja region (read our guide here) . Pro-tip: We recommend visiting no more than two wineries a day – although it is possible to visit three if you are tight for time. Many of the smaller wineries close on Sundays and/or Mondays and some of the smaller operations will not take visits during harvest time of September and October and also close during Christmas and Easter holidays. For groups,  Totally Spain can make arrangements for you to dine in a winery or even in a vineyard.  We can also arrange for you to take part in the harvesting.

10 Where to stay in Laguardia?

We stayed at the 4-star Hotel Villa Laguardia at the edge of Laguardia – making it ideal for coming and going to the wineries. [Thank you – as always – for a great overnight stay!] We love this place because its customer service is top-class.  It’s run by the extremely hard working Lavin-Santamaria Brothers .  They are also the owners of the splendid Villa Lucia wine museum nearby and a highly successful catering business that has even catered to the King of Spain when he visited the Basque Country.

4-star Hotel Villa Laguardia – a brilliant base for touring the wineries

The food here in both restaurants is excellent and very reasonably priced.  It has a lift with brilliant panoramic views of the vineyards. And the Wine Oil Spa circuit is fantastic after a day’s sight-seeing! And the wine shop in the hotel is really handy for some last-minute purchases of wine, other alcohol and local olive oils. It’s a great hotel for families and small children – its suites are easily converted to family rooms. It also has a small play area indoors and a large playground in the gardens with an outdoor pool and limited access to the indoor pool. Next visit – we’ll come with a bit more time – and we’re going to hire their bikes and cycle around a few villages – and follow that with a massage with hot grape oil and other essential oils.

Tourists say this popular European destination has the worst pickpocketing

visit laguardia spain

Pickpocketing may only be considered a petty theft , but it has the potential to ruin any traveler’s vacation.

While travelers could just lose some extra cash, thieves can also take more important items like passports or expensive jewelry.

By now, most people are aware of pickpocketing – 87% of tourists feel like they need to take steps to safeguard their valuables while traveling, according to a March 2024 survey by U.K.-based travel insurance company Quotezone .

Unfortunately, staying vigilant isn’t always easy when visiting popular – and crowded – tourist destinations and getting caught up in the excitement of travel.

“European cities are famously popular tourist destinations for sightseeing, with the recent surge in vacationers expected to continue throughout 2024, unfortunately this also makes them some of the danger zones for pickpocketing,” said Tiffany Mealiff, travel insurance expert at Quotezone, in a statement.

Ready to book that summer trip? Here's what travelers should expect this summer

As people gear up for their big summer trips , Quotezone revealed the European destinations with the worst pickpocketing in its recently released European Pickpocketing Index. Researchers analyzed the number of mentions of “pickpocketing” or “stolen” on traveler review websites for Europe’s top destinations against the number of visitors to that country. They also looked at the most popular tourist hotspots in that destination, like the Pantheon and Colosseum Duomo di Milano in Italy, to identify the worst areas for pickpocketing.

Mealiff recommends travelers invest in anti-theft accessories like money belts or cross-body bags. Items of value, like electronics, expensive jewelry and important documents, should be left in the hotel safe when someone is out and about. If a traveler does experience pickpocketing, head straight to the police station to file a police report.

Read below to see the European countries with the most mentions of pickpocketing per million visitors as of April 2024, and the tourist hotspots with the most pickpocketing mentions.

On April 29, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in Spain. This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Spain includes five Three Key hotels, 12 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Highlights of the Spain 2024 Key Hotel List

Cristine Bedfor — Minorca

Remarkable Personality in the Balearic Islands

Between Mallorca, Minorca, and Ibiza, the Balearic Islands display some of greatest variety in Key hotel winners across any region in the country. Mallorca, in particular, finds a bevy of options: from the small and historic ( Son Brull Hotel & Spa , Hotel Can Ferrereta , Nobis Hotel Palma ) to the stylish hotspots ( Es Princep and La Residencia ). One jewel on the island that defies typical categorization: Cap Rocat, an ancient fortress expertly remade , where the top suites occupy former cannon dugouts. On Minorca, check out Key hotels like Torralbenc , a tasteful, intimate, high-end hotel built from the bones of an old farm; or, in the capital of Mahón, look at Cristine Bedfor — one of the most creative, high-concept design hotels in our collection. Mandarin Oriental Ritz — Madrid

Radical and Renewed Design

In Madrid, you’ll find Key hotels largely in historic 19th or 20th century facades. Places like Santo Mauro , in a former Duke’s 1895 neoclassical mansion, or the Ritz , a Belle Époque palace that dates back to King Alfonso XIII. These are remarkable, and mainstays of our Spanish collection — but we’re ecstatic too to celebrate grand departures from such a style. The pinnacle: Hotel Marques de Riscal , a state-of-the-art Frank Gehry building complete with titanium “hair” (Gehry’s words) swooping above its vineyards. See too the ultra-modern glass boxes at Vivood Landscape Hotel outside Alicante.

Akelarre — San Sebastián

Key Hotels with MICHELIN Star restaurants

The Key hotel distinction and the MICHELIN Star for restaurants are decided independently of one another, but it so happens that several hotels in Spain sport both. Among them: Akelarre in San Sebastián (restaurant: Akelarre ), Atrio Restaurante Hotel in Cáceres (restaurant: Atrio ), and Pepe Vieria Restaurant Hotel in Poio (restaurant: Pepe Vieira ). Not unrelated, we see too a strong crop of winery hotels. Places like Terra Dominicata (a 12th century monastery with its own vintage) and Torre del Marques (an 18th century tower with views of the olive groves) are two of our most fascinating. Sánchez to stay on as Spain's prime minister

Pedro Sánchez , Spain’s prime minister, has announced that he staying on in his role.

His decision comes days after the Spanish leader abruptly announced he was considering resigning from office, after a Madrid court said it had opened an investigation into Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez .

The investigation followed a complaint from the pressure group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), which is known to have had links in the past to Spain’s far right.

In a dramatic speech this morning, Sánchez said he decided to continue as prime minister and called for a collective reflection, as well as cleaning up what he described as toxic practices in public life.

He called on Spanish society to become an example and inspiration for the world.

“I have acted out of a clear conviction,” Sánchez said. “Either we say enough, or this degradation of public life will determine our future, condemning us as a country,” he added.

“Thanks to that social mobilisation, which has influenced my decision, I can tell you what I’ve already told our head of state: I’ve decided to stay and fight even harder as prime minister,” he said.

He also called for an end to political and media attacks, adding: “Let’s stop this mud-slinging by collectively rejecting it … I ask Spanish society to once again become an example and an inspiration to a wounded world.”

A handout photo made available by Moncloa Palace shows Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez giving a statement to the press to communicate his decision of not resigning from his post.

We are now closing this blog but you can read our report on Pedro Sánchez vowing to stay on as leader, here.

Summary of the day

Pedro Sánchez , the Spanish prime minister, announced in a highly-anticipated televised address that he is staying on as the country’s leader.

His remarks came after he after spent five days reflecting on his future because of what he termed a “harassment and bullying operation” being waged against him and his wife by his political and media enemies.

Sánchez said he had decided to carry on as prime minister despite the attacks he and his family have had to endure.

The prime minister said that “thanks to that social mobilisation, which has influenced my decision, I can tell you what I’ve already told our head of state: I’ve decided to stay and fight even harder as prime minister.”

Sánchez’s socialist allies welcomed his decision.

Salvador Illa , a former socialist health minister and candidate for regional president for the Catalan branch of the socialist party in the upcoming 12 May Catalan election, welcomed Pedro Sánchez’s decision. “This is the best news for Catalonia,” Illa wrote.

The Socialists and Democrats group in the European parliament said: “European Social Democrats are with you, Pedro.”

Alberto Núñez Feijóo , the leader of the conservative People’s party (PP), said that “if the prime minister has no problem appearing ridiculous, he can go for it. But the fact that he’s dragging the rest of my country down that road shows that Spanish citizens don’t have a prime minister who’s up to the job.”

The conservative People’s party’s Isabel Díaz Ayuso said “Sánchez has spent years using institutions to persecute political adversaries, judges, the media and journalists, as well as their family circles. His project today is a warning to us that it he will roll over any counterweight that reminds him that there are limits. In the name of impunity.”

Santiago Abascal , the leader of the far-right Vox party, said that “Sánchez’s decision to carry on is a reaffirmation of his coup against unity, against coexistence, against the rule of law, against the separation of powers, and against the freedom of the press.”

'Spanish citizens don’t have a prime minister who’s up to the job,' Feijóo says

Alberto Núñez Feijóo , the leader of the conservative People’s party (PP) who has accused Pedro Sánchez of navel-gazing, melodrama and failing to live up to his office, said the prime minister’s words and deeds were proof of the need for a change of government.

“Everything we’re living through is just the epilogue for a past that we’re going to overcome,” he said.

“If the prime minister has no problem appearing ridiculous, he can go for it. But the fact that he’s dragging the rest of my country down that road shows that Spanish citizens don’t have a prime minister who’s up to the job,” Feijóo said.

The Socialists and Democrats group in the European parliament, meanwhile, said: “European Social Democrats are with you, Pedro.”

Rob Roos , a Dutch member of the European parliament and vice chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists group, called Pedro Sánchez a “joke.”

“Beautiful Spain becomes a circus under his leadership,” he said.

'Sánchez’s decision to carry on is a reaffirmation of his coup against unity', far-right politician says

Speaking to reporters after Pedro Sánchez ’s announcement that he is staying on as prime minister, Santiago Abascal , the leader of the far-right Vox party, said that “for the past five days, Spaniards have been subjected to a crude, shocking and victim-playing piece of theatre that has shamed us internationally.”

Abascal added:

Sánchez’s decision to carry on is a reaffirmation of his coup against unity, against coexistence, against the rule of law, against the separation of powers, and against the freedom of the press.

Pepa R. de Millán , a spokesperson for the far-right Vox, has accused Sánchez of using “like-minded journalists to publish a manifesto and label all complaints that investigate his wife’s businesses as ‘attacks.’”

Opposition criticises Sánchez after announcement

The conservative People’s party’s Isabel Díaz Ayuso , the regional president of Madrid, has accused Pedro Sánchez of trying to undermine checks.

“Sánchez has spent years using institutions to persecute political adversaries, judges, the media and journalists, as well as their family circles. His project today is a warning to us that it he will roll over any counterweight that reminds him that there are limits. In the name of impunity,” she said.

Su proyecto sale hoy a avisarnos: laminará cualquier contrapeso que le recuerde donde están los límites. Por la impunidad. — Isabel Díaz Ayuso (@IdiazAyuso) April 29, 2024

Sumar’s Yolanda Díaz , who serves as Spain’s deputy prime minister, sent a message to the conservative People’s party’s Alberto Núñez Feijóo .

“Mr Feijóo, stop questioning the results that emerged legitimately from the ballot box. Mr Feijóo, respect this country. If we’ve reached a full stop, then this new phase has to be about political initiatives and measures,” she said.

Here are the key lines from Pedro Sánchez’s speech this morning.

“If we don’t say, ‘Enough!’, then this degradation of public life will condemn our future as a country. It’s true that I’ve taken this step for personal reasons, but these are motives that everyone can understand and recognise because they are about the values that form the bedrock of Spain’s supportive and family-base society.”

“It is thanks to this social mobilisation that has so decisively influenced my reflections – and of which I am once again grateful – that I want to let you know what I’ve decided. As I told the head of state this very morning, I have decided to stay on as Spain’s prime minister and to stay on with even more strength than before – if that’s possible.”

“I think our country needs to embark on that collective reflection. But I actually think we’ve already begun to do that over the past five days. It’s a collective reflection that will lead to a cleaning, a regeneration, to a sense of fair play. For too long, we’ve allowed mud to colonise political and public life with impunity and to infect them with toxic actions that would have been unthinkable even a few years ago.”

“Today, I’m asking Spanish society for us once again to set an example for a convulsed and wounded world. Because the evils that afflict us are far from exclusive to Spain. They are part of a global reactionary movement that wants to impose its retrograde agenda through defamation and falsehoods, through hatred and through stirring up fears and threats that have nothing to do with science or reason.

Let’s show the world how we defend democracy. Let’s put an end to this mud in the only possible way: through a collective rejection that is calm and democratic, and which goes beyond parties and ideologies. It is something I firmly commit to leading as the prime minister of Spain.”

Iratxe García Pérez , a Spanish socialist who leads the Socialists and Democrats group in the European parliament, also welcomed Sánchez’s move to stay on.

“Good for Spain , good for Europe,” she said.

Spanish PM Sánchez says he'll continue in office after days of reflection over wife's corruption probe

Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Monday he will continue in office “even with more strength” after days of reflection.

Sánchez shocked the country last week, announcing he was taking five days off to think about his future after a court opened preliminary proceedings against his wife on corruption allegations.

“I have decided to continue on with even more strength at the helm of the government of Spain,” he said in a televised speech on Monday morning.

The legal complaint against his wife, Begoña Gómez, was filed by a far-right legal platform that says Gómez used her position to influence business deals.

The group, Manos Limpias, or “Clean Hands,” acknowledged that the complaint was based on newspaper articles. Spanish prosecutors say it should be thrown out.

Sánchez said the move was too personal an attack on his family and he needed time to decide on his priorities.

Sánchez, 52, has been Spain’s prime minister since 2018. He was able to form a new minority leftist coalition government in November to start another four-year term thanks to the exceedingly fragile support of a handful of small regional parties. He is one of Europe’s longest-serving Socialist leaders and while popular internationally, he is loved or despised in Spain.

Sánchez blames the investigation on online news sites politically aligned with the leading opposition conservative Popular Party and the far-right Vox party that spread what he called “spurious” allegations.

His supporters say this should be a wake-up call to react against baseless attacks that are poisoning Spanish politics.

The Popular Party, however, said Sánchez’s behavior was frivolous, adolescent and unbecoming of a European leader. It said the decision was a tactical ploy to whip up support for electoral purposes.

Nagore Calvo Mendizabal, a senior lecturer in Spanish and European politics and society at King’s College London, said that Sanchez’s decision could be “another of his political maneuvers” and that it could benefit him by whipping up support nationally in the battle against attacks from the right.
