WATERFALL JUMPER

Jaco’s most popular tour.

Waterfall Tours Jaco Costa Rica

PRIVATE TOUR

Vehicle options, bilingual guide, w/ drivers license, credit card required, local hotel pickup, safety instructions.

ABOUT THE TOUR

Tour description.

During the Waterfall Jumper tour, we travel into the tropical rainforest by dirt roads, river beds, and trails working our way to the mountain tops. Withstanding the beautiful views of the valleys and coastline we travel down to a waterfall/natural pool where we get to cool off before working our way back to Jaco . Throughout the adventure, we take plenty of stops for photographs and also a quick stop at a local rancho for a drink or just a bathroom break.

Please note the following: This tour is operated by a dedicated amount of time (example, 1hr, 2hrs, 3hrs, etc.) and season depending, on skill level, or condition of trails the tour may change its course to offer you the best experience available at that given time!

WHAT TO WEAR

We recommend the use of close-toe shoes (People use sandals, but we highly recommend that you don’t) as the first and most important choice of clothing for the tour. Also, we are off-roading which means we will be getting dirty, so any clothes you don’t mind to throw into the wash afterward (No white clothes, they will be ruined) . On this tour, we also arrive at a waterfall /natural pool where you may enter the water, so may be a good idea to wear your swim gear.

WHAT MAY WE SEE

Without a doubt, we have all the possibilities to see many of Costa Rica ‘s wildlife during our adventures into the rainforest , but we cannot guarantee that you will spot them. As we are traveling trails frequently traveled and our vehicles make noise especially in bigger groups, it keeps certain wildlife on the outskirts of our trails just outside the line of sight. This won’t rule it out though as frequently we come across many times of birds such as toucans, scarlet macaws. We’ve also spotted on our rides monkeys, sloths, and deer.

SEASONS CHANGE EVERYTHING

In Jaco, the Central Pacific area of Costa Rica , we have two remotely powerful seasons which we call: Dry Season (November – May) and the Wet/Rainy Season (June – October) . During the seasons you will see the terrain completely change. Expect dryer trails, less water in the rivers and waterfalls/natural pools, and a TON of dust (We sell bandanas in the office!) While during those wet months the dust turns into mud, fuller rivers and falls/pools, and a great chance of getting wet! Our terrain once saturated with rain (September – October) some trails will become unsafe for us to travel and we will reroute tours.

RESERVATION REQUIREMENTS

1) With your payment the tour will be confirmed and reserved. 2) Drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers license. 3) Dirt Bikes / Motorcycles REQUIRE a motorcycle license (Costa Rican Law) 4) Credit Card is required for a security deposit (One for the group*) 5) Passengers: 5+ Years for ATV Passenger | 2+ Years for Buggy Passenger. 6) Local hotel pickup is included within the Jaco area, outside a small transportation fee may be applied. 7) Pickup time is 10 minutes prior your tour start time. 8) A photo of the passport is required, where the name of the person appears and where the entry stamp to the country appears.

Tulin River in Costa Rica.

Depending on the season, this river can be very low and calm, or can be quite high and rapid. With appropriate water levels and conditions, we will be able to have a great time splashing across the river at several locations. The shores are also an ATV playground area with small rocks, mud and sand in some areas.

The Tulin River starts near the town of Puriscal, then connects to the Chires river and finally lets out into the pacific ocean at Playa Hermosa.

Stop at Tulin Bridge for a group photo opportunity.

This is an old school (almost historic) iron bridge that connects Puriscal with Playa Hermosa, through small back country towns and villages. Most of the way on this scenic road (ruta 239) is compacted gravel with some recently paved areas.

Super fun ATV tour!

Long and fun ATV ride! They really do a good job of easing you into it if it’s your first time and teaching good safety

Very Very Very Cool Experience

Being my first time using an ATV was a wonderful experience. The guides teaches and trains the group before leaving. I was always behind the guide and he never left us. I learned and observed a lot about how beautiful Costa Rica is 🇨🇷 and its Pura Vida people. My family and I enjoyed the beautiful views, the rivers and the waterfalls. We visited places that can only be done with ATVs. I really love it! Lunch is delicious and yummy .

I recommend the time from 10:30 to 2:30pm.

Amazing experience

They picked us up and dropped us off right at our hostel in quepos which was great(about a 30 minute drive) We started off with a meal that was delicious, just a regular Casado that was super filling and you can tell was made with love!. Our guides name was Kevin and he was excellent in every sense his instructions on how to properly operate and run the atvs was great. Through our whole adventure he was constantly offering to take pictures and videos for us to make it such an unforgettable experience. You cross rivers and puddles through your adventure until you make it to a small waterfall hidden up in the trees, the only people in our group was just me and my friend so we had it all to ourselves, didn’t feel rushed at all and were able to chill there until we were ready to continue.at the top of a hill you had an amazing view of the scenery and ocean and we even got a snack of watermelon with our fantastic view . Highly recommend

Four wheel fun

We had a great time seeing Costa Rica from this unique perspective. The ride was great fun and Kevin, our guide made sure that we saw great vistas and enjoyed a cool plunge in the waterfall along the way. The Honda ATVs were a blast to operate and Kevin was very safety conscious. It was all topped off with a delicious local Tico meal at the end.

Such a great experience.

We started off in the palm fields before ascending a small dirt path up a mountain. On the trip we drove through fresh spring water, stopped for a swim in the most amazing waterfall before making our way back for a home cooked meal. We were treated like family and I’d highly recommend the experience .

Super fun and beautiful ATV tour

My friend and I did the ATV tour and loved it!!! The guide was very funny and very caring. It was my first time on an ATV and found it very easy to ride. The waterfalls and mountain and jungle were breathtaking. And we did the 2pm tour so we cousin catch the sunset. Expensive but all Costa Rica tours are. Recommend!

Best part of our trip

Kevin was awesome. He picked us up from our AirBnB for the tour. We had such a blast driving the ATV’s through all sorts of terrains to see beautiful views and an amazing waterfall. Highly recommend!

so much fun!!

This adventure was a last minute add to our trip to Costa Rica and I am so happy we did! My kids 11 and 16 absolutely loved it! Kevin was patient and encouraging with my daughter as she learned to drive the ATV and took us on an incredible ride up the mountain. We went through mud and rivers and then stopped to take a dip in a waterfall! When we returned to the start we enjoyed a delicious home cooked meal. Highly recommend!

This atv adventure was such a blast! Kevin was an awesome tour guide! The ride was well worth the money. It was a long ride (but not too long). Lots of mud holes, if you like to get dirty. The waterfall was awesome. we enjoyed the sweetest watermelon I have ever had, while standing in the middle of the jungle. Talk about epic. afterwards we had a yummy meal!

There was a good amount of rain, I’d recommended to bring a light water proof jacket.

Loved the tour

We loved this tour. By the end Kevin felt like family as we laughed and told stories. The back country side could only be seen like this on the atvs. We stopped and swam in the waterfall which was refreshing after riding.

atv waterfall tour costa rica

Exhilarating Experience

This activity was awesome. We booked the afternoon spot and had wonderful, authentic Costa Rican food before getting on the ATVs. The actual trip was long and we got to ride on many different terrains. The waterfall that we went all the way out to was a hidden gem. The tour guides were great and very friendly. I highly recommend booking this tour!!

This was a great family experience. It was a small group and the views were great. The food was delicious!

So much fun

Excellent staff, had a great time ATV-ing through jungle and up the mountains. Stopped at a private waterfall for a refreshing swim and then again along the way to enjoy the mountain views. The Meal at the end was delicious. Highly recommended.

Definitely worth the drive

We stayed in the capital and came down for the day. The ATVs are easy to drive and fun to maneuver. The dip in the waterfall is refreshing and the views can’t be expressed in writing.

Def bring a change of clothing and get muddy and play hard. The guides are welcoming and informative, but al so fun.

The only thing I would change, no children tours. I would ask about private ones so you are not limited on speed. Traffic is bad enough in CR you don’t need it simulated on an adventure by a slowpoke.

Amazing Tour and Guides

My friend and I booked the double ATV and we really enjoyed the tour. The views and location was perfect. The guides had a lot of patience with the tourist that were new to the ATVs and it made our tour that much special. We got to stop and see a waterfall on the tour and we would recommend this tour.

Atv increíble

Una experiencia súper bonita, las cascadas los caminos todo estuvo perfecto

I never knew ATV riding was so much fun!!! It was great to go through the palm tree sections, and the small villages, up to the beautiful waterfall. I had a blast!!! In addition, the lunch was fantastic!!! I will definitely be back again.

This was SO fun!!!

The whole ride was amazing! We saw so much, the group was so wonderful, and I would highly recommend this to anyone!

We had 2 double ATVs and had a wonderful time 🙂

An overall great experience!

The ATV tour was a fun and unique way to see the Costa Rican countryside. We rode for an hour away from base through palm forests, dirt roads, neighborhoods, and plenty of river crossings. After a pit stop at a waterfall, we made the muddy trek back (for a total of two hours on the four wheelers – your thumb will be sore!). The guides were fun while still upholding safety standards. Delicious traditional Costa Rican meals awaited us at back at camp!

Absolutely amazing!

Highly recommend! Breathtaking tour, one of the best you can do. My fiancé and I were the only two people in our group so it was like a private tour! We did the early tour. We shared a double ATV and each got a turn to drive. The scenery was so amazing and we also visited and got pictures at a small waterfall. Our guide was great and I felt safe the entire time. A thrilling and a great way to see Costa Rica.

Best day of our trip!

I can’t say enough good things about this experience. We brought our two kids, the youngest rode in a side by side and oldest on a regular 4×4. The terrain was fun and varied, perfect for our group age 4-63 but never boring!!! We all had a blast and tore it up, splashing through some great puddles and through beautiful scenery. The waterfall midway was AMAZING! What a hidden gem. I’ll never forget playing with my children here. And the lunch they served was not only delicious, but such a beautiful, heartfelt traditional meal. I felt like family! You won’t regret this experience.

C'est incroyable et mention spéciale à notre guide

A recommander, ce n’est pas un petit tour et puis s’en va…C’est un grand tour et tout restera dans nos mémoires.

All Terrain Vehicles - Literally!

I’ve been on ATVs before but have never used them to the full extent as we did on this tour. Be prepared to go through water, dirt trails, and paved roads as you climb to breathtaking views! The tour guides were great (bilingual, which was very helpful) and took pictures of us throughout the trip . The meal provided at the end was delicious and an awesome bonus. The whole team was very hospitable, I highly recommend!

Highlight of our trip!

This tour was our favorite. I and my partner shared a double ATV and each got a turn to drive. The scenery was so beautiful and we even visited a small waterfall. Our guide was great and I felt safe the entire time. It was super thrilling and a great way to see Costa Rica . Highly recommend!

Absolutely amazing!!!

My girlfriend and I were the only 2 people in our group so we had the tour guide all to ourselves!!!

It felt like a video game. Riding up mountains. Up rock paths. Through the mud. And even though small bodies of water. We stopped midway and took pictures at the waterfalls and overlooking a b reathtaking view of the mountain!

Our tour guide was amazing. He even took a video of us riding so that we can share it with friends.

Unbelievable experience all around!!!

Children: This is a pretty technical ATV ride at times. For safety reasons, the minimum age to ride with an adult is 8 years old. If you are traveling with children younger than 8 years old, we recommend a buggy tour which allows riders as young as 4 years old.

Restrictions: No prior ATV riding experience is necessary. Our Jaco ATV tour guides will show you the basics and get you comfortable on a practice track before we hit the trails. Minimum age to drive the ATV is 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. People with back and neck injuries should not participate. All guests will be asked to sign a waiver prior to departure.

Insider Tip: The place is called Vista Los Sueños for a reason, and this ATV tour brings you to double the vistas!! The off-road trek is so much fun, you will want to choose the 3 hour tour for sure. And be sure to wear good secure shoes so you can navigate the slippery trails up to the waterfalls.

Side By Side (UTV) & ATV

Tours in costa rica.

There’s no better way to discover the diverse beauty of Costa Rica than by grabbing the wheel of your own 4X4 ATV or UTV and blazing down off-the-beaten-track trails.

Leave the tourist map behind and encounter the real Costa Rica as we drive over lush mountain ranges, head deep into the misty jungle, and pass gorgeous ocean views.  Many miles of our pristine trails are accessible only by ATV , meaning you’ll experience insanely dynamic terrain… trails few others have had the opportunity to explore.

We chose Uvita, Costa Rica as our ATV tour headquarters for countless reasons, but one of the most notable is the astounding diversity of the Southern Zone of Costa Rica. This variety of landscapes is largely because, from sea level, it’s a quick ride up to 4000′, where the air is cool and crisp, and the valley and ocean views are expansive.

From unspoiled jungles to palm-fringed beaches to verdant mountain trails, Uvita is brimming with beauty. We can’t wait to share it with you—all from the seat of your state-of-the-art ATV or Side by Side.

atv waterfall tour costa rica

Our Jungle ATV Tours office is conveniently located in the center of Uvita, from where all our adventures start. That means you don’t waste any valuable vacation time in transport to some remote location, only to wonder why you spent half your ATV tour in a van. With Jungle ATV Tours, the heart-racing fun begins the moment you step into our headquarters!

After a brief instructional course on vehicle operation and a quick test ride to ensure you feel comfortable, you’ll be on your way with a once-in-a-lifetime Costa Rica excursion you won’t soon forget.

Our Costa rica atv tours

4 - 5 hour tour, includes coffee tour, from $120 usd.

Now that you’re comfortable and confident on your Side by Side or ATV, it’s time to explore the highlights of Uvita, Costa Rica.

Your knowledgeable, bilingual guides will lead you out of town and over several idyllic mountain ranges. As we head deeper into the jungle, we’ll cross trickling streams, pass lush coffee and banana plantations, and enjoy striking ocean and valley views.

Your ATV tour in Costa Rica continues as we ride through a small, typical Costa Rican village and past quaint farms, even glimpsing the mesmerizing San Luis waterfall. One of the tallest waterfalls in all of Costa Rica, the top of San Luis is often hidden in a mist of rolling clouds.

atv waterfall tour costa rica

About halfway through your exhilarating ATV tour in Uvita, you’ll stop at a family-run coffee farm for a tasting and mini-tour. This is an authentic Costa Rican coffee tasting experience that’s both delightful and delicious.

Feeling fully recharged from your caffeine boost, you’ll continue your heart-racing drive through the rainforest. After a bit, you’ll stop for fresh local fruit and take a refreshing swim at another small waterfall before heading back to our headquarters.

Best day ever.

This experience was unforgettable. The guys that took us on our tour were super fun and friendly. Me and my family were there for my cousins wedding so we had about 30 members and they were so organized and were really there to show us the best. From the moment we left to the mini coffee shop along the way to the water falls to the end, every moment was PERFECT! I can not wait to go back. That experience was hands down the best I could have asked for and definitely UNFORGETTABLE !!! I can not thank my cousin Matt and all the members that took us out that day through the mountains. It was so beautiful and breath taking. Now, riding those quads was SO MUCH FUN !!!! I felt invincible, and literally felt like i was on top of the world. I cant thank that team enough for giving me that experience. 🙂

FUN FUN FUN Great Scenery

“I have taken 3 different ATV tours a round the area. This is the best. It is worth the drive from Quepos if you are there as the mountain route is beautiful and much more fun. Don’t forget you money to buy coffee to take home from the coffee plantation. The guides are excellent and make sure you are having a good time. Say Hi to Luis!”

Such A Fun Day!

We spent this morning with Jungle ATV, and it was well worth it! I recommend the single ATVs, seemed more fun than the bigger buggies that fit multiple people. We stopped at a coffee plantation that was super cool, the coffee was amazing, we bought some to bring back with us, and it was nice supporting local families. We also stopped at the top of the mountain for amazing views including whales tail. Last stop was the waterfall, we were pretty tired by that point but it was a nice last stop before the trip was over – the spread of fruit for everyone was also amazing. A few pointers – definitely wear sunscreen, there’s a few parts of the trail that are all sun, do not wear white (to say you get dirty is an understatement), and if you have long hair like me, wear a bandana underneath the helmet – it will make for showering and cleaning your hair afterwards much easier! What an awesome time, would highly recommend to anyone in Uvita, thanks again for such a fun day!

Los Suenos Horseback Waterfall Tour

A highlight of costa rican adventures , mount up and meander along lush horse trails to visit hidden waterfalls on a truly unique nature tour ..

horse in a tropical forest

Your tour begins with a pick-up in Jaco or Los Suenos. A drive of about 15 minutes transports you to a lush oasis spread across 80 private acres of untouched natural beauty. Home to some of the region’s best-kept horses, you meet your steed at the ranch. After some safety instruction with an experienced guide, you set off for a relaxed ride.

Perfect for new and novice riders, the unhurried outing winds along rainforest trails dense with tropical flora. Your guide points out some native plants, encouraging you to breathe in the sweet scents of lemon and mango leaves. The guide also educates on the transitional forest’s important place in the local ecosystem.

waterfall in a tropical forest

But not only humans and horses reside in the rich rainforest. As you trot along, you’re apt to pass white-faced monkeys romping through the treetops as rainbow-feathered scarlet macaws and yellow-billed toucans soar through the air. Keep an eye out for colorful dart frogs and iguanas perched in the trees.

You dismount to the soft sound of cascading water in the distance. A short walk reveals a secluded triple waterfall that empties into a natural swimming pool. Should you leap from the rock platform or plunge down a natural slide? Why not both? After a refreshing swim under the falling water, you mount up and ride back to the ranch where you’re greeted with a bounty of fresh tropical fruit.

An exclusive horse adventure , trail riding through a pristine rainforest creates indelible memories of your visit to Costa Rica .

Tours to Pair With Los Suenos Horseback Riding

You’ve had a serene morning. why not contrast that with an adrenaline-pumping afternoon, two and three-hour atv tours.

ATV tour above Jaco Costa Rica

Tour de la Gloria may be our shortest ATV tour but it packs in big fun. Set off from the center of Jacó and you’ll soon ascend a rainforest trail that rises to a lookout point with sprawling views over Jacó Beach and the Nicoya Peninsula. Whip astride mountain peaks above a rich jungle canopy and take a break to refresh at a secluded mountain cantina. On the return, enjoy a stop at a small waterfall.

Tour de la Paz takes you on a three-hour ride through the mountainous landscape that backs Jacó Beach. Tear along trails through primary rainforest to spots with sweeping vistas across the Pacific coast stretching south to Manuel Antonio Park and north to the port of Puntarenas. This tour also stops at a towering waterfall that empties into a natural swimming pool where you can take a 15-foot leap from a rock platform. On the descent back to town, loop along the edge of Carara National Park.

Los Sueños Canopy Tour

zipline jaco canopy tour

Perfect for both the experienced and thrill-seeking newbies, the two-hour-long Los Sueños Canopy Tour offers wild zip-line rides close to the town of Jacó. Climb to elevated platforms that offer spectacular views across rainforest terrain that’s home to brilliant scarlet macaws and white-faced monkeys. Then fly down high-speed ziplines.

These amazing adventure tours are sure to be highlights of your Costa Rica vacation!

Los Suenos Horseback Waterfall Tour REVIEWS

The horseback riding experience was 10/10! I had a really great time! The staff was very friendly and professional.
Absolutely wonderful tour and fantastic company from top to bottom. My wife and I took the horseback riding tour of the jungle and waterfalls and we had a blast. Guides were knowledgeable and welcoming; same goes for the other staff at the site. The company picked us up and dropped us off right at our hotel in Jaco. Only wish we'd found them earlier in our trip. Definitely check them out, you'll love it!
Our tour was great. The kids had not been horseback riding before, but the horses were very gentle. The waterfalls at the mid-point were very pretty and the water was COLD. I highly recommend the restaurant on the property- the fish at the buffet was the best I had in Costa Rica. I would recommend at least wearing some taller socks if you're going to wear shorts.
We loved the horse back ride. The guide was very friendly and we had a great time
The jungle booze cruise was awesome. It was like the cherry on our adventure sundae.
The waterfalls were breathtaking. The ride was nice and it was a calming time as well. I would love to do it again.
The horseback tour was so calm and peaceful. I love riding horses, and to do so through such a lovely place was neat.

Jeffrey Drew

What a great company and very professionally managed. All their machines were well maintained and looked fairly new. We used Adventure tours for several tours including horse back riding, ATV, and zip-lines while we were in the area. Thank you so much Adventure Tours Costa Rica!

What is Costa Rica Like in March?

April 29, 2024 By Sammi Leave a Comment

March is the peak of high tourism season in Costa Rica, as it is the time of many US and Canadian spring break vacations. It is also sometimes Holy Week depending on the year. Additionally, March sometimes has some of the hottest days of the year for many places in Costa Rica. Put all that together and March means higher prices, bigger crowds, longer lines, more traffic, clear, sunny skies and high temperatures in Costa Rica.

In this post, you’ll learn more about March in Costa Rica.

March in Costa Rica Weather

Costa Rica experiences the typical tropical seasons: dry and rainy. Dry season is generally December through April, rainy is generally May through November. Although average year round temperatures do not vary much, March is hot hot hot in Costa Rica.

While February in the driest, March may have some of the hottest days. Even though January and February temperatures are already high, March temperatures still creep up a bit during the last week or so of the month. When it’s normally 95°F (35° C) on the Guanacaste coast in February, it goes up slightly to around 104° F (40° C) in March. Air is dry, rivers have shrunk, dust is blowing.

Rainfall is at its lowest in March, even in the rainiest places in Costa Rica.

The exception is the Caribbean coast, which does not strictly follow the tropical seasons and has their own climate. More information below.

Below are short descriptions of the weather in March for popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica.

Guanacaste and Nicoya Peninsula

Dry, dusty, hot and arid. March is peak dry season time and throughout the tropical dry forests of the Guanacaste coast and Nicoya Peninsula , mountains are bare, waterfalls and rivers have dried up to their maximum and the sand is burning hot midday. If you go inland in the Guanacate province like to Tilaran or Miravalles, mountains are also yellow but temperatures are not as high.

march in costa rica playa hermosa gte

Temperatures are generally at their highest around the end of March when there can be heat waves. Expect temperatures to go up to 100-107° F (40-42°C) for days in a row so be very careful if going out during the peak hours, 10 AM to 2 PM. Stay hydrated, wear lots of sunscreen, put on a floppy hat, protect your eyes with sunglasses and get a portable fan if you need to.

Night time temperatures go down to around 80° F (27° C). It can get very windy in March as well.

Central Valley

The Central Valley has great weather in March, however if there is a heat wave, it may crawl up to high 80s° F (32° C) when it’s generally mid 70s° F. But it will cool down at night to a comfortable mid 60s° F (18° C). It can get windy but the breeze is always welcome. There may be a random downpour in the GAM ( San Jose , Heredia , Alajuela, Cartago ) but it’s usually a one or two time thing in the evening if it does rain.

Whenever we have visited La Fortuna in March, we get the best weather there. It’s hot, humid, dry but in the evenings, it cools down quite a bit. Being in the Northern lowlands tropical rainforest, it may sprinkle lightly at night in March still. Average day time temperatures are low 80s° F (27 C) and night time temperatures are low 70s° F (21° C).

costa rica in march la fortuna

We also see Arenal Volcano clear almost all day long in March. The clouds roll in and out very quickly so if the top is covered, just wait a bit and the clouds may roll out, even for a few minutes for a clear volcano.

Jaco and Manuel Antonio

Jaco and Manuel Antonio in March has great weather. Hot, sunny, humid and dry. Average day time temperatures are upper 80s to low 90s° F (31 – 33° C) and average night time temperatures are around mid 70s° F (25° C). If there’s a heat wave, temperatures may increase a couple degrees. Humidity is fairly high around 60-70% in these areas.

Costa Ballena and Osa Peninsula

Even in the driest month of March, the South Pacific like Dominical , Uvita , Ojochal and the Osa Peninsula stays lush and dry. This is the driest month for this area but even still, it can still have a random rain here or there in the late evenings and nights. Average temperatures similar to Jaco and Manuel Antonio, upper 80s to low 90s° F (31 – 33° C) and average night time temperatures are around mid 70s° F (25° C). Always high humid here.

Caribbean Coast (Tortuguero, Limon and Puerto Viejo)

The Caribbean coast ( Puerto Viejo de Talamanca , Limon and Tortuguero ) tends to follow its own weather pattern and doesn’t strictly follow the rest of Costa Rica’s climate. So although it can rain in March, it tends to still have good weather with high temperatures and cloudy but dry conditions for the better part of the day. If it rains, it may be a short shower in the late afternoon and evenings, or overnight and early mornings.

Average day time temperatures are mid to high 80s°F (30-31° C) and average night time temperatures are low 70s° (22° C).

March weather in Monteverde is fantastic for anyone who can’t stand the coastal heat and humidity. This mountain town sitting at around 1200 meters in elevation (~4000 feet) always has fresh weather. It may still sprinkle here and there and will still be cloudy from time to time, but that is the true tropical cloud forest experience.

We have visited Monteverde in March a couple times and it was wonderful. Though still cloudy, it would clear up for longer periods of time so we could see both the Pacific and Caribbean slopes from the viewpoints in the cloud reserves .

Even though it does get a bit hotter in March, it is still extremely comfortable. Average temperatures are high 70s° F (25° C) in the day time and low 60s° F (15° C) in the night time. Can go up to low 80s° F (26° C) during a heat wave.

Prices in March in Costa Rica

March is an expensive month to travel to Costa Rica being peak of the high tourism season, mostly part to it being the month of spring break and because of Semana Santa (Holy Week). If Holy Week is in March that year (it changes every year), then hotel prices increase nearly double and some resorts can have a 2 or more minimum night stay. If Holy Week does not fall in March at all, then prices are normal high season rates, similar to January and February.

This is also applicable for car rental prices, which fluctuate throughout the year depending on the season. But again, as March is the peak of the high tourism season, prices are quite high. An automatic subcompact crossover 4wd SUV can be around $90-100 USD a day for just the car rental rate, excluding insurances and extras.

Tour prices do not change in March, they’re the same as January and February. Make sure to ask for cancellation policies as some places may have a stricter cancellation policy due to Holy Week.

Airfare is expensive in March, it’s not a cheap time to travel abroad. I have only ever found flights from Seattle to Guanacaste Airport around $800-900 USD and much more expensive if I want main cabin or economy plus. Sign up for cheap flight subscriptions or put an alert on the flight you want. Start looking at least 6 months before for flights. Get a travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire and start collecting travel points to use if you can only travel in March.

Trip Planning for March in Costa Rica

If you plan to visit Costa Rica in March, we highly recommend you to book your services at least 3 months before due to very limited availability, especially if you have any “must sees” or “must dos.” For example, Tabacon Hot Springs Resort and Manuel Antonio National Park are two extremely popular places that require reservations and they sell out weeks in advance. Tabacon also has incredibly strict cancellation policies around Holy Week.

For Manuel Antonio National Park, people missed out on visiting the park because they were sold out around two weeks in advance for the last two weeks of March. They only sell a certain number of tickets per day so snag yours as soon as you can. Even tour operators do not have a special reserve of tickets and national park tours will sell out.

Corcovado National Park is also very popular in March as they only sell a limited amount of park tickets All visitors must go with a guide to Corcovado so it is not possible to simply buy your park tickets and be ready to go – you must have prebooked a tour.

Then popular activities such as canyoning in La Fortuna , ziplining at Sky Adventures Arenal, Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve night walk, Damas Island Mangrove kayaking and private snorkeling tours sell out very quickly in advance as well. Any private guides, private chefs or private tours also tend to sell out very fast.

If you wait last minute to book your hotels, cars and tours, you will probably not get what you want and you will have to book whatever is left and it may be expensive or not the best quality. So book early for March.

Best Things to Do in March in Costa Rica

March is a great month for all activities in Costa Rica, particularly birdwatching, wellness and outdoor adventure. However, white water tubing in the Guanacaste province is not great as the water level is too low. This will be at places like Hacienda Guachipelin and Rio Perdido (both parks have white water tubing).

Also, the waterfalls in Rincon de la Vieja National Park Las Pailas sector and Barra Honda National Park shrink to a trickle so it’s not very impressive to see. Other waterfalls in Guanacaste like Llanos de Cortes are dry but still have a bit of water. Thankfully, the Caribbean coast, La Fortuna, Monteverde, Central Pacific and South Pacific have waterfalls with flowing waterfall all year long.

Here are some of the best things to do in March in Costa Rica.

Beach Hopping

No vacation to Costa Rica is complete without a visit to some beaches! March is a great time to beach hop and see as many beaches as you can. Even the more “off the beaten path” beaches are easier to get to due to drier roads so a high clearance car may be required instead of an actual 4wd.

costa rica in march beach hopping

You can take a boating tour to see different beaches or hop in your car to explore.

March is a fantastic time to see Resplendant Quetzals in Costa Rica. You can find them in Monteverde, San Gerardo de Dota , the cloud forests in San Ramon and in San Vito. The most popular places are Monteverde and San Gerardo de Dota where you can see many Quetzals with the help of an excellent birding guide.

costa rica in march resplendant quetzal

We’ve seen Resplendant Quetzals in both places with a guide. In Monteverde, we have seen the Quetzal in Curi Cancha Reserve and Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. In San Gerardo de Dota, we went to a private reserve near Providencia.

Other great places for birding in Costa Rica in March are Palo Verde National Park and Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge since the migratory birds are there. Furthermore, the river levels are lower and the lagoons have dried up, so the birds will congregate in specific spots, making them easier to see. You can see a variety of birds like Roseate Spoonbill, Jabiru, Little blue heron, Great Potoo, Tiger Herons and more.

Wildlife watching goes a bit low in March. The humpback whale season ends around mid March and by end of March, the season is essentially over. It won’t start picking up again until July. In March, you may see some turtles and dolphins out in the ocean.

There aren’t really any major turtle nestings in March – no mass nestings of turtles.

Bio Luminescence

Due to the dry skies and clear waters, it is a great time to see bio luminescence in Costa Rica. The best place is Punta Cuchillos on the Nicoya Peninsula . It is also possible in Drake Bay .

Sky Blue Rivers and Waterfalls

Sky blue rivers and sky blue waterfalls will be at their brightest and bluest and prettiest in March. La Leona Waterfall up in Curubande near Rincon de la Vieja National Park is sparkly blue, Rio Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park has great chances of daily near perfect conditions, Blue Falls of Costa Rica in Bajos del Toro will be so blue, and the Oropendola Waterfall will be an emerald pool. March is a great time to do a waterfall hike and visit the sky blue rivers and waterfalls.

Get a Massage

You can get a massage any time of the year in Costa Rica but we highly recommend finding an indoor local spa if you don’t feel like being out in the intense heat and humidity that day. Get a massage, facial, body wrap and just relax the day away. You’ll feel so refreshed afterwards.

There are lots of indoor massage parlors and spas with air conditioning. If your hotel/resort doesn’t have their own spa, find a local place in town. Local massage parlors are very common in La Fortuna and often have promos.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

March is a wonderful time for scuba diving and snorkeling in Costa Rica. You can see manta rays in March, so if you’re a scuba diver, definitely schedule a dive or two during your trip. The water temperature may be a bit cold compared to the air temperature.

If you go snorkeling, wear a rash guard or use reef safe sunscreen. We recommend to go in the morning for the best snorkeling conditions. Afternoon can get very windy and it starts getting dark at 5 PM (sunset by 6 PM).

Clear skies means awesome stargazing in Costa Rica. Find a remote place with no light pollution and you can get some amazing star and astro photography. If you go out late at night, go in groups. Do not go alone, especially if you’re bringing expensive camera equipment.

Dry conditions make for good hiking times. Don’t miss going for a hike or two to enjoy some nice views and get some exercise. Go to a national park, private reserve or just walk on the beach at sunrise and sunset to get in your steps.

Notable Festivals in March

There are some fun cultural festivals to check out if you’re around.

Día Del Boyero

The second Sunday in March is officially the day of the oxcarts. This one day parade celebrates the importance of oxen and oxcarts in Costa Rica. This takes place in San Antonio de Escazu in San Jose and you can see hundreds of beautifully painted oxcarts, local farmers and artists showing off their unique designs and handiwork.

Semana Santa (Holy Week and Easter)

As Catholicism is the main religion in Costa Rica, Easter is a big deal – just as much or even more than Christmas.

If Holy Week and Easter fall in March, as it did in 2024 (March 24-30), then expect tons of crowds, lots of traffic, long lines and lots of local partying at the beach. The country officially has Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Sunday off so nearly all of the GAM cities (San Jose, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago) empty out.

There will be tons of parties on the beach, live music and dancing on Friday and Saturday. To celebrate Easter, there are also religious celebrations and festivities.

It’s important to note that in most cities, they are not permitted to sell alcohol on Thursday and Friday. But if you’re visiting touristic places like Jaco , Manuel Antonio and Tamarindo , you don’t really need to worry about staying dry that weekend. Although, you may need to wait in long lines at the supermarket.

Likewise, government institutions are closed all those days and many businesses close early or close completely. If you are landing on that Friday or Saturday, some supermarkets close early. Many restaurants in the GAM close that weekend.

Other Things to Know About March in Costa Rica

  • You will see lots of road side stands selling cantaloupe and watermelon which is in season. Don’t miss out on some of the freshest watermelon. Sugarcane is also in season so you may see huge trucks with sugarcane falling off the back, especially in Guanacaste.
  • If you plan to do any ATV or buggy tours, bring head wear and googles or sunglasses to protect your face from the extremely intense dust in Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula.
  • You may see or hear of bad fires in Costa Rica in March. This is true, some of it is “controlled” burning, others are forest fires that sadly got out of hand.
  • Lots of trees bloom in March so look out for beautiful yellow, pink and white trees.
  • Don’t like the heat? Consider going to the mountains instead. Check out San Gerardo de Dota , San Isido de Perez Zeledon, Tilaran, Vara Blanca, the Central Valley, Poasito, Monteverde for cooler weather (70s-80s° F or 21-27°C).
  • You can also do a coffee tour in March, even though it is at the end of the harvest.

What to Pack for Your March Vacation in Costa Rica

Essentials: Valid original passport, valid original drivers license if you plan to rent a car, credit card with no foreign transaction fee, travel insurance , medicine.

It is easy to get heat exhaustion or dehydrated without even knowing it and with temperatures 100°F and above in some places in Costa Rica in March, it can be dangerous.
