We are going to go through a month by month comparison on the best time to visit the Gold Coast shortly. But before we do here are some thoughts on the best time to visit the Gold Coast based on different factors.

Best time to visit The Gold Coast to avoid the crowds

Best time to visit the gold coast for good deals, best time to visit the gold coast for warm weather, best time to visit the gold coast to avoid summer holidays, best time to visit the gold coast for the beach, best time to visit the gold coast to go hiking, best time to visit the gold coast to see the theme parks, is january the best time to visit the gold coast, is february the best time to visit the gold coast, is march the best time to visit the gold coast, is april the best time to visit the gold coast, is may the best time to visit the gold coast, is june the best time to visit the gold coast, is july the best time to visit the gold coast, is august the best time to visit the gold coast, is september the best time to visit the gold coast, is october the best time to visit the gold coast, is november the best time to visit the gold coast, is december the best time to visit the gold coast, conclusion: the best time to visit the gold coast.

The Gold Coast is at its busiest in the summer months. But the weeks leading up to and including Christmas and New Year are when it is at it’s busiest. The weather is warm and sunny, and kids are off school for summer. So a lot of Australian families will book accommodation at the Gold Coast during the summer break.

Christmas Day and Boxing day are especially popular and you will see lots of families having BBQs by the beach.

If you want to avoid the crowds but still want to go in summer you are probably best off visiting in mid- late January, or even February.

It’s also worth noting that at the end of November school leavers head to the Gold Coast en mass to party for a week. This is honestly not a great time to visit it’s busy, crowded, and you have to deal with a lot of 17 and 18 years partying.

The best time to visit the Gold Coast if you don’t like crowds though will be March – October.

The best time to visit the Gold Coast for cheaper holiday deals will be in the autumn months of April, May, and June. The weather tends to be a lot cooler at this time of year, plus the kids are still in school so you don’t get a lot of local travellers.

A lot of hotels or apartment lets will offer cheaper accommodation, which is great news if you are trying to find a good deal.

December, January, and February are the warmest months for visiting the Gold Coast. Temperatures usually go above 30 degrees Celsius during the day. You do tend to get a few storms at this time of year which is something to keep in mind.

November, March, and April, are also excellent times to visit for warm weather. These months can also be quite humid, and temperatures peak in the late 20s (Celsius).

School summer holidays in Australia take place in December, and January. Because of this, this is one of the busiest times to visit the Gold Coast. If you want to avoid the crowds, and costs, that come with visiting during school holidays you definitely want to avoid these months.

If you are wanting to swim or chill at the beach the best time to visit the Gold Coast is between November – April. The weather is warm, and you tend to have lifeguards patrolling the beaches at this time of year too.

The best time to visit the Gold Coast for those looking to explore nature, and go hiking is June, July, and August. These are the winter months, and temperatures tend to be a lot more mild.

During the day temperatures average between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius, so this is a great time to enjoy the outdoors without overheating.

There are several theme parks on the Gold Coast , including, Dreamworld , Wet n Wild , and Movie World . The best time of year to visit the theme parks in our opinion is autumn for places like Movie World, and summer for the waterparks.

We highly recommend that you don’t visit during school holidays no matter what time of year, as this is when they get incredibly busy.

If you are tossing up between visiting the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast here is a handy guide.

January on the Gold Coast is one of the hottest months. Temperatures average between 21 and 29 degrees Celsius. There is also a high chance of storms and rain in January.

Despite this it is still a very popular month to visit for locals and international travellers. Summer school holidays in Australia happen in January, with kids going back to school towards the end of the month. This means that accommodation costs can be high.

Because of the warm weather January is the best time to visit the Gold Coast if you are wanting to visit the beach or one of the water parks.

best season to visit gold coast

February is another warm month to visit the Gold Coast. It’s usually around 21 – 28 degrees Celsius and incredibly hot and humid. If you aren’t used to the heat, take extra care. A lot of the beaches aren’t shaded, so wear suncream, hats, sunglasses etc, to protect yourself from the sun.

Due to the humidity, February can bring in a lot of rain and storms, so this is something to keep in mind when visiting.

Australian school kids will have gone back to the classrooms at this time of year, so it is definitely quieter than December and January. That being said though, February is popular for international travellers, so accommodation costs are still high, and you do need to book in advance.

February is the best time to visit the Gold Coast if you are wanting to cool down and enjoy the beaches or water parks during the hot Australian summer.

best season to visit gold coast

March is still a warm month, and a good time to visit the Gold Coast to make the most of the many beaches. Things start the quieten down towards the end of the month, and this is when you are more likely to nab a good deal on accommodation.

Temperatures average between 19 and 28 degrees Celsius. It can still be hot and humid at times, and it is probably one of the rainier months of the year.

As long as you don’t visit the Gold Coast during any school holidays that may occur in April, it is generally a quieter time to visit. It’s also a lot cheaper. If you book accommodation in advance you can get some good deals. The weather starts to cool slightly averaging between 17 and 26 degrees Celsius.

Generally you won’t find many Aussies nipping out to swim at the beach at this time of year, but some tourists who consider the weather to be warm might go for it. It’s still a great time for surfing though.

Again as long as May doesn’t coincide with school holidays, it is a much quieter time to visit the Gold Coast. If you visit during the week, you will find the beaches relatively scarce compared to the craziness of the summer months.

Temperatures range between 14 and 24 degrees Celsius on average. It’s not a great time of year to swim because of this, but you can enjoy some excellent walks along the beach at this time of year. It’s also the best time to visit the Gold Coast, if you are planning on hiking and exploring the Gold Coast hinterland area as it is a lot cooler.

You also get some beautiful sunsets to witness as you walk along the beach.

best season to visit gold coast

June is the best time to visit the Gold Coast if you want to grab a cheap deal on accommodation, and avoid the crowds. The weather is mild, ranging between 11 and 21 degrees Celsius. And on the plus side there isn’t a lot of rain at this time of year either.

The beaches tend to be quiet, and perfect for walking along and enjoying the coastline. It’s also a good time to visit the theme parks as kids are still at school.

best season to visit gold coast

July is still a cold month, by Australian standards anyway. Temperatures usually range between 9 and 21 degrees Celsius. Although on the plus side this is one of the driest months of the year.

July isn’t a hugely popular time to visit the Gold Coast. Kids are usually still in school, and with the mild weather locals tend to avoid the beach. Because of this you are likely to get a good deal on accommodation.

There is still lots to do on the Gold Coast in winter , and we highly recommend exploring the outdoors, including the Gold Coast hinterland. It’s also a good time of year to visit some of the theme parks like Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and Dreamworld. With the milder weather it makes it a lot easier to walk around.

August is one of the more mild months at the Gold Coast when it comes to weather. It’s cool, or at least by Australian standards. On average you are looking at a peak of 22 degrees Celsius during the day. It’s not quite swimming weather but as mentioned above, perfect for hiking. The days tend to be cool but sunny.

August is Australia’s winter, so the Gold Coast isn’t inundated with masses of tourists. It’s a great time to visit if you are wanting to blend in with the locals, and explore some galleries, or do some shopping.

On top of that, August is the best time to visit the Gold Coast, if you are planning to visit one of the theme parks. With milder weather it’s easier to walk around and enjoy the outdoors, especially if you are not used to heat. It’s also off season so you shouldn’t get crowds of people at the theme parks, particularly during the week.

Like August, September is a good time to visit the Gold Coast if you are planning to spend a bit of time outdoors. The weather is cooler, and days tend to be pretty sunny at this time of year despite the lower temperatures.

On average temperatures will be somewhere between 12 and 24 degrees Celsius. Accommodation tends to be a lot cheaper, although try to avoid visiting during the spring school holidays if you can.

October is a good time to visit the Gold Coast, if you want to experience slightly warmer weather, without the crowds. Temperatures are milder at the beginning of the month, usually averaging at about 25 degrees Celsius, but start warming up towards the end.

You can still get some good deals on accommodation in October, and this is your last opportunity to do so before the busy season arrives.

October is the best time to visit the Gold Coast if you are wanting to visit before the humid summer months and still want reasonably dry weather.

Early November one of the best times to visit the Gold Coast in our opinion. The weather is warm, averaging between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius. It’s a great time for swimming and other outdoor water activities.

In early November most schools are still open, so you shouldn’t get huge crowds at this time of year. That being said mid-late November is completely different, and we highly recommend avoiding the Gold Coast at this time.

Every year in mid November to early December, it is a right of passage for school leavers to attend what is called ‘Schoolies week’. To celebrate the end of their studies, students flock to places like the Gold Coast, rent out apartments, and party to celebrate the end of high school.

It’s not ideal to visit, if you aren’t a school leaver, because it can get a little bit crazy. Ok a lot crazy. Places tend to be incredibly crowded, and you will come across swarms of 17 and 18 year olds on the streets and beaches partying. Whilst authorities tend to clamp down on it, particularly when underage students are involved, there is a lot of drinking that goes on.

If you are visiting the Gold Coast at this time of year, it will not be a relaxing experience. Take that from someone who once attended Schoolies Week many moons ago! On top of that, accommodation prices skyrocket.

Mid November is when Queenslanders have their schoolies week, and the two weeks following usually draw in school leavers from New South Wales, and Victoria.

December is a good time to visit the Gold Coast when it comes to weather. Temperatures are warm, averaging at 20-28 degrees Celsius. It’s perfect for enjoying the beach, having a swim or even surfing.

The main problem with visiting in December is that accommodation books up very quickly. You need to be incredibly organised and book months in advance. Prices are also at an all time high due to demand.

December marks the beginning of summer holidays for school kids, so expect crowds of people flocking to the Gold Coast.

The Christmas and New Year season is incredibly busy, and Aussies tend to book a self contained apartment for the week, and celebrate the festive season with their families and friends.

best season to visit gold coast

Honestly the Gold Coast is one of those places that you really can visit at any time of the year. In Australia’s winter months, you can visit theme parks, hike in the hinterland, or even just spend a relaxing week enjoying the sights along the coastline.

In the summer months you will get to experience the Gold Coast at its peak with beautiful sunny days perfect for lounging around the beach.

So when is the best time to visit the Gold Coast? Apart from Schoolies weeks in late November, we genuinely think anytime is a good time to visit Australia’s Gold Coast.

What is the best time to visit Gold Coast?

Gold Coast sees bright sunshine for nearly 300 days every year; however, the best time to visit the Gold Coast is between May and October. The warm weather is ideal for beach activities and boat tours. End of January and most of February is the time when humidity is high, and the region sees a lot of rainfall. Also, in the peak winter months of June to August, while the days are sunny, temperatures drop to as low as 11-12 degrees. Owing to its subtropical location, the climate in this region never gets too hot or too cold and the days are mostly dry and sunny. The period from June to August is an ideal time for whale watching . The months from November to April form the low season for tourism in The Gold Coast. You can expect to find the cheapest deals on accommodation and flights, but there will not be any boat tours or parties going on during these months. However, there is a surge in tourism during Christmas and New Year. Travellers are advised to make their bookings in advance to avoid any last minute rush. That being said, the Gold Coast is a year-round destination known for a wide array of outdoor activities like golfing, hot air ballooning, fishing, nature walks etc.

When is the best time to visit the Gold Coast?

Aerial view of the Gold Coast on a clear sunny day, Queensland, Australia

The Gold Coast in Queensland is one of Australia's premier beachside destinations and, in order to maximise your time there, consider planning your trip between April and June. However, that's not to say you can't go at any time of the year.

Thanks to this beautiful spot's sub-tropical climate, reasonably good weather is experienced throughout every season. Whether you fancy sliding down the thrilling AquaLoop at Wet 'n' Wild in summer or marvelling at majestic whales as they breach the water in spring, get ready to explore this beloved coastal city.

The weather on the Gold Coast is reasonably good all year round with over 300 days of sunshine on average. However, the climate is classified as sub-tropical, so you can also expect high humidity and frequent storms during the summer.

Despite the often-unpredictable weather and increased chance of rainfall, summer is still a popular time to visit the Gold Coast so be prepared for potentially higher prices and lower availability for accommodation.

The temperatures do get milder in autumn and winter, but they're still high enough to enjoy the beachy lifestyle the Gold Coast is known for. You will have to pack a cardigan or light jacket though as temperatures tend to dip when night falls during the colder seasons.

Best for: visiting beaches, going on rides at the Wet 'n' Wild theme park and hiking up Mount Tambourine

Summers in Australia can get quite warm, especially in the northern regions, and the Gold Coast is no exception. During the months of December, January, and February, the Gold Coast experiences its hottest temperatures with figures reaching up to 30°C+.

If you're not used to the heat, this can be quite uncomfortable and somewhat challenging to manage however there are plenty of places to go and activities to participate in to help you cool down. From taking a dip in the crystal clear waters of Burleigh Heads Beach or in Surfers Paradise to hitting up Wet 'n' Wild for a day of water-based fun, you won't run out of refreshing things to do. Guaranteed.

You'll also be treated to some spectacular storms during summer, as well as the torrential rainfall that inevitably comes with them, so be mindful of the weather conditions before you start planning out your itinerary. Humidity levels will also be quite high so make sure you have water with you when you're out exploring to avoid dehydration.

Best for: fishing, walking/hiking, picnics, and water-based activities such as jet skiing and parasailing

While the season of autumn (March-May) is considered to be the Gold Coast's 'peak period', it also happens to be one of the cheaper times to visit with prices lowered when it's not school holidays. This means you can enjoy the season's fantastic weather (think endless blue skies and hours of warm, golden sunshine) without breaking the bank.

Yes, the temperatures average around 23°C (which is slightly lower than the highs experienced in summer) but it's still warm enough to enjoy water-based activities such as swimming, snorkelling, and surfing so get your thongs out and slap on some sunscreen.

Best for: surfing, exploring local art galleries, visiting wineries, and concerts

One of the best things about winter on the Gold Coast, and one of the reasons why this season is one of the best times to visit, is that it's reasonably dry and doesn't experience the volume of rainfall that other Australian regions do during winter.

While temperatures average around 17°C, the days are still clear and sunny, allowing you to explore both the great outdoors and an array of cultural activities.

Winter is also a great time to visit several of Gold Coast's theme parks including Movie World and Sea World (the water-based theme parks all heat the water during the cooler seasons) with fewer crowds and lowered wait times for rides.

Best for: wandering through local markets, swimming, and whale watching

Spring is another great season to visit the Gold Coast with warmer temperatures than those experienced in autumn and winter yet cooler than those in summer. The humidity levels are also reasonably low but steadily climbing before hitting peak levels (75% humidity) in summer.

This means you can enjoy the nice, warm weather without having to worry about the tropical storms and frequent rainfall expected as the year progresses. While there's less chance of seeing rainfall during the months of September, October, and November, the wind can be quite strong, potentially affecting activities like dining outdoors and some water-based activities such as parasailing.

If you plan on travelling during spring, be mindful of "schoolies" and other festival periods taking place on the Gold Coast as accommodation prices will rise and there will be larger crowds at popular attractions. Try booking well in advance to avoid unavailability and disappointment.

If you travel before the 22nd or just after the 5th, you’ll be saving over $100 per night.

What to do there: You’ve come all the way out to the Gold Coast Hinterland, so you may as well meet the residents! Take part in feeding sessions on rainbow lorikeets and koalas and learn all about unusual animals found nowhere else in the world! What’s really awesome is this is a non-profit organisation, and all your money goes back into the centre!

#4 – Sky Point Observation Deck

Sky Point Observation Deck

  • Get a unique perspective on one of Australia’s most recognisable skylines
  • Try the highest external building climb in Oz
  • One of the coolest attractions in The Gold Coast

Why it’s awesome: The Gold Coast has one of the most iconic skylines in Australia, but have you thought about what it looks like from the top of one of the skyscrapers? Well, if you have just head to the Q1 Building. It’s the only beachside observation deck in the whole of Australia, and you won’t regret taking the lift (or climbing) to the top of this amazing piece of architecture.

What to do there: There’s plenty you can do at the highest landmark in The Gold Coast. Of course, start off by taking in the awe-inspiring views and make sure you get a few killer shots for Insta! If you’re feeling really brave, then this also offers the highest building climb in Australia. Reach the 270m summit of the skyscraper which offers unparalleled views of the Gold Coast and out to the ocean. If you’re travelling with a friend but you’re not so crazy on heights, you can always wait for them inside the restaurant, which is one of the best places to eat in The Gold Coast!

The Skycoaster is an adrenaline-fuelled activity that should only be attempted by the bravest! The FlowRider is a cool way to test out your surfing skills in a totally safe shark-free environment!

#6 – Springbrook National Park – A beautiful outdoor place to visit in The Gold Coast

Springbrook National Park

  • Head to this UNESCO World Heritage site, perched atop an ancient volcano
  • Spot different birdlife in the National Park
  • One of the major points of interest in Queensland

Why it’s awesome: So, this one isn’t actually in the Gold Coast, but we couldn’t overlook such a beautiful spot. Swap the golden sands for lush green rainforest to have a real outdoor adventure and a break from the hustle and bustle of the city! Springbrook gives you a chance to add wildlife watching, hiking, and a whole host of other activities to your Gold Coast itinerary!

What to do there: It’s good to plan a little in advance for your trip to Springbrook, as there a few things that you may not have considered bringing! First up is your swimsuit. The National Park has some of the coolest swimming spots in Queensland and you’ll not want to leave without taking a dip. Binoculars are a must-have for ornithologists, as Springbrook has diverse birdlife which you’ll be lucky to see outside of captivity! Of course, one of the best ways to see the park is on foot, so bring some comfy boots and get out onto the hiking trails!

#7 – Miami Marketta – A must-see for foodies

  • One of the best places to eat in The Gold Coast
  • Head here on a weekend to try a range of street food
  • Enjoy music and cocktails too!

Why it’s awesome: Want to transport yourself to the markets of Bangkok? How about a Barcelona tapas bar? Australia is pretty far away from anywhere by plane, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get authentic and tasty food from across the globe! Miami Marketta just happens to be the best place in the Gold Coast for that. There are over 25 food vendors to choose from, so your Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday dinner is sorted. There’s sure to be something that’ll tickle your taste buds!

What to do there: It’s a great spot for foodies, so why not spend the first half hour or so just wandering around and taking in the different aromas before settling on your final option. Although the good thing is you can order loads of little small dishes from the range of different choices on offer! That’s definitely what we’d do… To accompany the delicious food, why not sample a cocktail or just enjoy the great live music that’s always on. Miami Marketta really is a feast for the senses!

#8 – Burleigh Heads National Park – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in The Gold Coast

Burleigh Heads National Park, Gold Coast

  • Take a dip in the protected waters of Burleigh Heads
  • Pick up some artisan souvenirs from the arts and crafts market
  • A great spot for a picnic when visiting the Gold Coast

Why it’s awesome: If you liked the sound of Springbrook National Park but it seemed a bit of a hassle to get to, there’s one much closer that is another gorgeous outdoor space within a stone’s throw of the city! Burleigh Heads is wedged between Surfers’ Paradise and Coolangatta (where you’ll find some of the Gold Coasts best hostels if you’d like to stay in the area), and it’s a popular spot with locals as well as tourists. Spend the day here to escape from the concrete jungle of The Gold Coast and come back feeling refreshed and recuperated!

What to do there: Where to start?! There are some fantastic swimming spots in Burleigh Heads . The protected waters are a lot quieter than those further north at Surfers’ Paradise, so you’ve much less chance of having to dodge a rogue surfboard! Another great activity is taking the walk track from Burleigh to the stunning Tallebudgera Creek. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for Aussie wildlife such as koalas, echidnas, and even the odd sea eagle!

#9 – Gold Coast Wax Museum and Chamber of Horrors – Quite the quirky place in The Gold Coast

  • Visit the largest wax museum in the Southern Hemisphere
  • Enter the chamber of horrors if you dare
  • One of the more unusual things to do in The Gold Coast!

Why it’s awesome: So, first of all, we should state that this isn’t on your standard Gold Coast itinerary. But we’re going to tell you why this intriguing place should be on yours! Like the famous Madame Tussaud’s in London, it’s filled with waxworks of world leaders and some of the most famous people of our time. However, this bizarre attraction in The Gold Coast has a bit of a twist which will leave you chilled to the bone! Probably…

What to do there: After you’ve posed for photos or taken a selfie with Gandhi, Jack Sparrow, or the British Royal Family, it’s time for the chamber of horrors. In here, you’ll find Dracula, Frankenstein, and loads of werewolves. Of course. If that’s not enough, there are genuine torture devices and waxwork recreations – it’s often hard to tell them apart! If you’re a horror movie fan or looking for a touch of the macabre, don’t miss this weird Gold Coast must see!

#10 – Cable Park and Southport Cable Hut – An unknown (but awesome) place to visit in The Gold Coast!

Cable Park and Southport Cable Hut

  • See an impressive yet understated beacon of technology
  • Relax in the shade of the palm trees
  • One of the lesser visited points of interest in The Gold Coast

Why it’s awesome: Just a short walk from Main Beach, you could be forgiven for not really noticing this place. And sure, it’s probably not a place to visit for the aesthetics. However, when it comes to history and feats of engineering, this little non-descript hut might just be the most impressive place in the Gold Coast. The reason it’s so special is that this hut housed the Pacific cable, which ran 4,000 miles from Australia to the US. Even more surprising is that it was laid on the ocean floor with no problems!

What to do there: Visiting the Southport Cable Hut and Cable Park is more of a quick activity. Do it on the way to Main Beach or to catch a bit of a break from the sun, sea, and sand. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting Gold Coast landmark and there is some information in the park where you can find out more. Astoundingly, this little hut played an important role in news and information being transmitted in both World War One and Two!
