Cruises 2024

What's new in 2024.

We are excited to announce you that from May to October  2024 , we will once more be operating both private and shared skippered sailing cruises from our base on the beautiful island of Paros , which is located in the heart of the Cyclades archipelago.

What is your style? Private cruise... or by the cabin?

When joining a Windfinders cruise you have 2 options: You can hire the entire yacht for yourself or you can decide to join a cabin charter where you will rent only one cabin on a shared cruise with other travellers. Cabin charters are a really nice way for solo travellers, couples or small groups willing to meet new travellers and share a week’s sailing together. A cabin charter is confirmed when a certain number of participants is reached.

How much does it cost and what is included in the price?

A week’s sailing on board Cinderella in high season amounts to about 850 euros per person for a private booking. Booking a cabin only in a shared cruise costs 2200 euros for 2 persons sharing the same cabin or 1600 euros for a single occupancy of the cabin. Further information is available on the Booking page.

What is always included when booking with Windfinders

Accomodation on board windfinder's beautiful sailing yacht "cinderella".

Just a little over 50ft in length, Cinderella can accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 double cabins with attending bathroom.

The service of a professional skipper

Istvan is both the skipper and the owner of the sailing yacht Cinderella; he will be your skipper, interlocutor and also your guide throughout your sailing cruise.

Fuel is included

Fuel consumption of the main engine and the engine of the dinghy are included. This is for a reasonable utilisation of 2 – 3 hours per day.

No security deposit

Most charter companies require the charterers to leave a security deposit even in the event of a skippered charter. At Windfinders’ the skipper takes full responsibility of the yacht and its equipment.

benefits of sailing with us

Starting in the heart of the cyclades archipelago.

The island of Paros is the second largest island of the Cyclades Archipelago. Exactly in the center of the Cyclades archipelago, Paros is the ideal starting point for your holiday! It is easily accessible

Kitesurfing, Windsurfing and Wingfoiling are allowed from the boat

At Windfinders we are Kitesurfer, Windsurfer and Wingfoiler friendly! So you are welcome to bring your equipment on board and we will take you to those hidden secret spots which are only accessible by boat.

Important note: Windfinders does not provide any equipment, you have to bring your own. You have to be an independent to advanced rider able to ride  upwind and familiar with all the safety procedures involved! Riding from the boat is at your own risk.

A fantastic week sailing the small Cyclades

Our family of 6 spent a week on board the Cinderella from 1-8 August as part of a longer multi island trip in the Cyclades. The week exploring the small Cyclades, hidden coves and quiet beaches, as well as decent sailing hours, with skipper Istvan turned out to be the highlight of our summer vacation. As we were advised by someone, the skipper and his/her knowledge of the area and the ability to get along with the guests can make or break the trip. With Istvan we hit bingo as he turned out a fantastic host for us and the kids, always willing to embark on an activity, on sea or on land. He knows his ship and the Aegean sea and that gives a very comfortable and safe feeling. Equally important, Istvan is really a nice guy, very relaxed about almost everything. Many thanks Istvan for a great week on board the Cinderella. 5/5 stars for sure.

– Hoes family from Netherlands

Go for Istvan

We went on our first sailing trip ever five years ago and decided to choose Istvan Ferrare as a skipper. It was said that he is one of the most trustful skippers in the agean sea. After one week of sailing with him we got very good friends, got the sense of sailing and we NEVER felt unsafe!! Istvan has a great sense of humour and he is really sensitiv,he is an entertainer and skipper in one person . He would never risk something without thinking or do something unsafe. Istvan is an expert in finding the best places for you in the Agean. We really enjoyed every sailing week with him.

Just had the most amazing sailing…

Just had the most amazing sailing holiday with Istvan and his boat Cinderella. We felt completely safe and secure on the boat, Istvan’s knowledge and experience is incredible and he took us to fabulous beauty spots that are not on the commercial path. We would recommend Windfinders to everyone with confidence…..Istvan is not intrusive and gives you space and privacy so if you are thinking of booking a sailing holiday then book Windfinders. Thanks Istvan

Perfection on the ocean waves ......

Just back from a week of sailing on Cinderella with Istvan. Cinderella is beautiful with everything you need and plenty of space. Istvan is just perfect! He knows the best places and is extremely competent which makes you feel totally safe. Istvan is very knowledgeable and an excellent host. I will definitely book again and will be recommending without any hesitation whatsoever.

Greece Sailing Adventure: Cyclades Islands

10 days | sunsets, seafood and seaside splendour in the mediterranean.

greece greek flag mykonos harbour

Fulfil your dreams of sailing the Greek Islands on a ten-day seafaring adventure around the renowned Cyclades. Setting off from Santorini, cruise the Aegean Sea in search of ancient towns, secluded coves and holiday hotspots like Mykonos and Paxos. Throw in some freshly caught seafood, local wines and a laidback way of life, and you’re set to drift and roll to the patterns of the ocean. Cool off with regular swims in the Aegean’s turquoise seas and get the lay of the land from a local leader who’s got all the people in the right places. Trust us – it’s all smooth sailing from here.

Trip overview

  • A Santorini sunset around the caldera is a sight to behold. Walk along the volcanic rim of the island past white villages that cling to plunging cliffs and watch as day turns to night in the most stunning of ways.
  • Sail the Aegean Sea on your small group yacht and island-hop through the Cyclades, taking regular stops to swim off the side of your boat and letting the pitch and roll of the ocean help you sleep at night.
  • Feast on fresh seafood at a sleepy waterfront taverna in the Small Cyclades islands – far away from tourist crowds and deep in the local way of life. This is island living, Greek style.
  • Step back in time among the Venetian architecture of Naxos and consider learning about rural life with a daytrip to a country village – a couple of the many experiences to be had around the Cyclades.
  • No Greek island adventure is complete without a stop in Mykonos. Embrace your hedonistic side with its boutique culture and nightlife or relax on one of the many beaches dotted along the coast.
  • As the majority of this trip takes place on a sailing boat, you’ll need to feel comfortable with moving about the vessel, including the use of stairs. With that said, sea legs come naturally to some but not so much for others. Most of our departures run in peak season, when the seas are calmer. The ship will experience some roll and pitch in choppy conditions, however all of our ships come equipped with stabilisers to minimise movement. There will be seasickness tablets on board and your crew will do all they can to minimise any discomfort.
  • A Zodiac is used to transport passengers from the boat to the mainland, with landings taking place at piers (dry landings) as well as on beaches (wet landings). Zodiacs can sometimes be awkward to climb in and out of, but a sense of humour and can-do attitude is all you need.
  • This is an adventure on board a real yacht, which means living spaces, cabins, bathrooms and showers need to be shared with other passengers. Sleeping quarters can be quite compact, but you will be spending the majority of your time above board in the open air.
  • Time on the water also means time in the sun. Remember to pack sun protection, such as sunscreen and a hat, and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. See the Essential Trip Information below for a full packing list.
  • Please note that smooth sailing is dependent on the weather, so itinerary changes may occur at the last minute if the weather becomes unfavourable. If any changes are made, you can trust in your knowledgeable skipper to choose an alternative route or activity.
  • Due to the size of the yachts, sound carries easily from one side to the other and can wake your fellow travellers. If you’re planning to have a late night, it’s a good idea to head into town and experience the local nightlife.

Welcome to Greece! Meet your skipper and shipmates at Cafe Spartakos at 1pm at Athinios Port, Santorini and take a ferry to Ios where you will board your yacht. If you’ve got time, why not consider arriving a couple of days early to enjoy Santorini. Check out the range of restaurants, shops and bars in the island's capital, Thira. An absolute, must is to take a walk along the caldera's rim to Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia. This is a particularly memorable experience at sunset, but make sure you leave plenty of time, so you aren't walking in darkness. Santorini's volcanic beaches are another must-see.

After your welcome meeting, unpack and get settled into your new home away from home a real sailing yacht. You will have some free time today to enjoy everything that Ios as to offer, including the beautiful nearby sandy beaches or check out Hora's shops, restaurants and bars – it’s all accessible within a short walk from the harbour in Ios – which all come alive in the evenings.

  • Overnight boat (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. Your skipper will collect the trip kitty of EUR 110 and discuss shopping to buy supplies for your group trip. If you have any dietary requirements, please make sure you notify at the time of booking so we can accommodate.

If you are arriving today, please allow at least 1 hour from arrival time at Santorini Airport to get to Athinios Port.

The beauty of sailing is that each day is unique and, while we have a destination to reach, if the weather changes or something takes the group’s fancy, we are flexible on the day's itinerary. The itinerary may be subject to change depending on weather. Your skipper will make the final call to ensure your safety at all times.

When the ferry is not operating your skipper will organise a private sea transfer from Santorini to Oia

Sail to the rugged island of Amorgos (approximately 4 hours). This is the stunning location of Luc Bresson's film, 'The Big Blue'. Stop for a swim at Paradisi Beach before continuing along the coast to the port of Katapola. The restaurants, cafes and bars along the waterfront are an excellent place to relax and enjoy views of classic Cycladic windmills and an old Venetian castle. You might like to explore the ancient Minoan Settlement or drive up to the spectacular 11th-century monastery, Moni Hozoviotissis, for beautiful views of the Aegean Sea. Also worth a visit is the village of Hora, sitting high up in the rocky mountainside. Stroll through the labyrinth of stone laneways and Byzantine churches surrounding the town square. The Amorgos Archaeological Collection is housed nearby in Gavros Tower.

Cast off and sail to the Small Cyclades this morning (approximately 4 hours). This group of islands boast quaint fishing villages, clear waters and beautiful beaches. While all of these islands once harboured communities in ancient times, the middle ages saw this reduced to just pirates and goats. Today, only Koufonisia, Iraklia, Schinoussa and Donousa have permanent residents, with the largest population said to be around 300. In the evening, perhaps sample fresh seafood in a waterfront taverna and sit back to enjoy the peace of the Mediterranean.

Today you'll make your way to the largest Cycladic island of Naxos. There’s the option of taking a day trip around the island, but you can always stay behind and relax. The island’s best beaches are to the south, where water sports are also on offer. Perhaps hike up to the old Roman Catholic neighbourhood of Kastro, where winding laneways, mansions and churches all retain a medieval feel. While here, stop by the Roman Catholic Cathedral in the square, and the nearby Archaeological Museum which is housed in the former Jesuit School of Commerce. Take an optional trip to the countryside to observe rural life, see one of the oldest temples in Greece and enjoy lunch in the hills at a family tavern. Get a taste of the local brew with a shot of Kitron (best described as a lemon liquor). In the evenings, indulge in the vibrant nightlife of Hora.

Sail to the island of Syros (approximately 4 hours), dropping by the Bay of Gaidharos along the way for a swim. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and neo-classical architecture, Syros’ neutral role during the Greek revolution made it a safe haven for the persecuted. Perhaps catch a bus up the hill to the fortress-like village of Ano Syros and explore the town’s stone archways and narrow alleyways (the views of the Aegean are stunning from up here). Sample authentic Greek food and culture in the capital of Syros and the Cyclades, Ermoupoli, and check out the magnificent town hall in the main square.

  • Overnight boat (2 nights)

In the morning, raise anchor and set off on a short cruise (approximately 3 hours) to an island packed with beauty and glamour, Mykonos. With a history of around 5000 years, the island is said to be named after Apollo's grandson. It was also the mythological base for a deadly battle between Zeus and the Titans, their giant petrified bodies forming the rocks of the island. Browse the chic galleries and boutiques in town, examine the unique architecture of the Church of Panagia Paraportiani or relax on one of the island’s white beaches. In the evening, perhaps wander down to Little Venice, where colourful wooden balconies hang precariously over the sea – the ideal spot to sit back with a cocktail and enjoy an Aegean sunset. Afterwards, join in the fun of Mykonos’ notorious nightlife.

Set sail for the island of Sifnos, known for its production of high quality ceramics. The island's bare hills belie fertile valleys of wild juniper, terraced olive groves and almond trees. The beach in the main port of Kamares is one of the best on the island and the ideal place to swim. Wander among the whitewashed houses, churches and chapels of the village of Apollonia, which is the capital of Sifnos. The Museum of Popular Art displays old photographs, textiles, costumes and pots. Climb up the headland to enjoy panoramic ocean views and see the medieval architecture of the fortress of Kastro.

Sail towards the tranquil island of Folegandros this morning. Named after the son of a former King of Crete, Folegandros has suffered a long history of colonisation and occupation like many of the surrounding islands. In the port of Karavostasis, the pebbly beach or a waterfront taverna are nice places to relax. Take a stroll through the island’s capital of Hora, one of the oldest villages in the Cyclades. The area in and around the Kastro is the most striking. In the evening wander up the hill to the pretty Church of the Panagia, an excellent vantage point to view the sunset.

Bid farewell to the open water as you catch the ferry back from Ios to Santorini arriving back at Athinios port just before 12pm midday. With no other activities planned for today, your adventure ends on arrival in Santorini. Your skipper can assist with organising a taxi to drop you off at your hotel or Santorini International Airport.

Please note when the ferry is not operating, the skipper will organise a private sea transfer.

If you would like to spend more time in Santorini, we’ll be happy to organise additional land-based accommodation (subject to availability).

Athinios Port, Santorini is located about 30 minutes’ drive away from Santorini Airport. Please allow enough time for this transfer and check-in time if you are flying out today. If you plan to depart today, please don’t book a flight earlier than 4 pm in case the boat’s arrival is delayed due to weather conditions.

Overnight boat (9 nights)

Dates and availability

Important notes.

START TIME This trip starts on Day 1 in Santorini at 1pm

ACCOMMODATION ON BOARD THE YACHT This trip is accommodated entirely on board a yacht of between 54ft to 56ft. A typical yacht for 11 travellers is equipped with a mixture of 2 x double cabins, 2 x twin cabins and 1 x triple cabin. There are 5 shared bathrooms. Our boats are real yachts and this is a real sailing trip. Yachts are designed to keep sleeping areas to the absolute minimum of space, while maximising common areas as much as possible.

Rooms are allocated on arrival by our skipper according to group composition, which means it is not possible to reserve or guarantee any specific berth or cabin. Single passengers will be paired up with another passenger of the same gender, this may mean sharing a double cabin with a double mattress. If you’d prefer not to share a cabin, a single cabin supplement is available at an additional charge. Everyone including the skipper shares the bathrooms on board.

While not everyone may feel entirely comfortable living in such close quarters, those who are looking to revel in the adventure and exhilaration of an authentic sailing trip usually find any discomfort from cramped living conditions is more than made up for by the whole experience.

HOT WEATHER: Summer temperatures can reach up to 40°C, which can be uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. Please consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.

PASSPORT DETAILS: Please provide full passport details at time of booking including exact name as per passport, date of birth, nationality, issue and expiry dates as these are essential for booking services on this trip.

ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION: Please note that the majority of our sailing trips start and/or finish at a marina or port. If you have pre-booked any additional accommodation through us, you will need to make your own way to the joining point on Day 1 and from the finish point on the final day. We do not provide transfers between hotels and the port/marina. Please check the Essential Trip Information for details.

SNORKELLING There are many opportunities for snorkelling during this trip. Diving masks, snorkels and fins are provided onboard the yacht and are for use by all passengers. They are disinfected prior to use. Some customers may prefer to bring their own diving mask and snorkel from home and just use the fins available on board.

TRIP KITTY: On this trip it's compulsory to contribute to a kitty of EUR110 per person. The kitty is an on-ground payment put into a central fund managed by travellers. It helps fund for breakfast and lunch on the boat and other small items such as ice, water, snacks and drinks. Travellers are responsible for the preparation of these meals onboard and to shop at port where supermarkets are often very close to the mooring. Kitty amounts are subject to change to reflect local price increases. On day 1, the skipper will talk through the kitty and how it will be managed (by yourself or fellow travellers) The kitty will be collected when you arrive at the welcome meeting or in stages throughout your trip.

Want an in-depth insight into this trip? Essential Trip Information provides a detailed itinerary, visa info, how to get to your hotel, what's included - pretty much everything you need to know about this adventure and more.

2024 Cyclades Island Hopping Guide – Greece Travel

Here is everything you need to know about Cyclades island hopping. We have the best routes to take for Greek island hopping in the Cyclades, and of course, find out what the best beaches in the Cyclades are.

Greece Travel Blog_Cyclades Island Hopping Guide

This is the guide you need when planning your Greek Cyclades island-hopping adventure. My guide highlights all the most beautiful islands you should visit when exploring the Aegean Sea.

Before you jump on that ferry from Athens to the Cyclades Islands, read ahead to discover how many islands are in the Cyclades, the best routes to take for Greek island hopping in the Cyclades, and, of course, find out what the best beaches in the Cyclades are.

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

How Many Islands Are In The Cyclades

The Greek Cyclades include approximately 220 islands. The name “Cyclades” relates to the shape of the islands – they form a circle around the sacred island of Delos. You should know that most of the smaller islands are uninhabited.

The major islands are:

  • Folegandros

Visiting The Cyclades Islands Greece

Little boy admiring Santorini With Kids, Greece

Greek island hopping is the most brilliant way to spend your time visiting Greece . It’s a fantastic way to understand the local lifestyle and tune in to the times and rhythms of the countries.

There are different and varied ways to go island hopping in Greece; however, the idea behind this guide is not to see the highest number of islands in a short time but to see the best of them, taking a more relaxed experience.

To put it clearly, more islands are not always better. You will certainly not optimize time and end up tired and confused, uncertain of where you’ve been and what you’ve seen.

For this reason, our one-week Cyclades itinerary includes only three islands, and our two-week itinerary just five. Remember that you should also devote at least two days to Athens since this is the port of departure, so take it easy and enjoy the best of Greece.

While in Athens, I recommend a local guide. Check out this really cool Mythological tour.

Best time to island hop the cyclades.

August is the hottest month in Europe for travel, not just because of the high temperatures but because half of the continent has summer holidays.

If you can avoid August, you’ll be able to find more convenient fees for almost everything, the weather will still be warm and pleasant, and you’ll see fewer crowds everywhere.

If you insist on traveling during August or have no other chance, then the first golden rule to follow is to make sure you book early. Remember that many Greeks have holidays in August so that ferries can be booked.

The best months to go island hopping in Greece are May and June before the crowded months of July and August, or the end of September when the weather is still charming, but families with kids are already back home because school is about to begin.

If you choose to travel in less popular months, such as April and October , remember that ferries don’t have a high frequency, so some islands might be more challenging to reach.

We recommend you book your ferries with Ferryhopper in advance here.

Best islands in the cyclades.

In this section, we highlight our favorite Cyclades islands, the reasons to visit them, and the reasons to avoid them if your time is limited.

These tips and suggestions are here to help you decide which places to visit according to your travel style and the things you like to experience when on vacation.

Winter in Greece - Small town Oia on Santorini

Greece’s stunningly beautiful and charming Santorini star island is often included in everyone’s first-time Greek Island hopping itinerary.

Romantic whitewashed villages over the edge of the Caldera and blue-domed churches are part of the traditional landscape we all expect to discover on the island.

The beaches in Santorini are certainly not the best ones in Greece. Nevertheless, this guided tour lets you explore all the popular sights in Santorini. You should visit Santorini if the unique landscapes interest you and if you are not just about beach life and suntanning for hours.

The most popular tours in Santorini:

  • 🚢 Experience Santorini’s beauty, hot springs, and beaches on this catamaran cruise
  • 🍷 Sip on Santorini wine during this small-group tour of the island and three of its wine estates
  • 🚶 Succumb to Santorini’s charms on a private tour to see its highlights
  • 🛥️ Make the most out of your time in Santorini aboard this relaxing and tranquil sunset sail with BBQ and drinks

Santorini is also a good option since there are direct flights from almost any European country; this makes your itinerary easier and might even help you skip a stop in Athens .

Among the reasons not to choose this island, high prices and huge crowds all year long are probably the most important ones. The island is so popular that it’s challenging to find a time of the year when you’ll find it quiet.

As we also said before, there are better places to go in Greece regarding beach life. Here, most beaches are windy, or there’s nowhere golden sand to be found. The underwater panorama is rocky and can be dangerous for small children. In fact, you should remember that Santorini is, after all, an extinct volcano .

Remember, since Santorini is the island farthest from Athens, it is always better to make it the first destination if you’re traveling by ferry; this way, you can cross your path up from Santorini to get back to Athens at the end of your island hopping experience.

Mykonos To Crete - Crete To Mykonos Guide

Another famous Greek Island , Mykonos, is known for its glamour and crazy nightlife, expensive boutiques, and super high prices. Whitewashed landscapes are also part of Mykonos’ panorama, while the island also has something Santorini doesn’t: amazing beaches.

There are direct flights from several European cities, too, so Mykonos offers an excellent opportunity to travel to Greece without reaching Athens,

Mykonos is exclusive and glamorous; it’s a place where celebrities choose to spend their summers, so expect very high prices for anything you want to do, from riding a taxi to buying a bottle of mineral water . Everything costs more in Mykonos! Being a cruise ship destination, the island can sometimes feel overcrowded.

Mykonos Island , however, has some pretty beaches, including Elia, Ornos, and Super Paradise. Other than that, if you’re a fan of Greece’s past, Delos’s archaeological site is an incredible island that can easily be visited from Mykonos.

The most popular tours in Mykonos:

  • 🚢 Escape the crowds on land and admire Mykonos from the water on a luxury catamaran cruise
  • 🚶 See the essential sights of Mykonos on this guided half-day shore excursion with pickup from the terminal
  • 🍷 Experience Mykonos’ wine-making culture on a winery tour with traditional music and orange juice for any kids
  • 🏞️ Discover the best that Mykonos has to offer during this combination of a walking & driving tour or on this half-day private Mykonos tour

Archaeological Sites In Greece - Ancient amphitheatre, Delos island, Greece

The sacred island of Delos is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites you can choose to visit in Greece . A visit to the site can make an excellent day trip if you’re spending your holidays on the island of Mykonos.

Delos is a small islet a few miles from Mykonos and a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. According to Greek mythology, the island was where the god of light, Apollo, and his twin sister Artemis were born.

A sacred place in ancient times, the most remarkable places to discover include the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, and the famous Avenue of the Lions. There’s also a small museum on the island with objects found in the place during the excavations.

You can’t stay on the island, so it’s best to add this stop while you are in Mykonos to take a boat there and back in a day.

Lesser-Known Greek Islands - Naxos

Home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Cyclades, the island of Naxos is enormous and hard to visit in a short time. If you’re happy seeing only  a tiny portion of the island, then add it to your Cyclades island-hopping itinerary.

Prices are affordable compared to other Greek islands , and there are not many reasons you should exclude Naxos. Maybe it’s not as cosmopolitan as Mykonos or Santorini, but for many tourists, that’s the real beauty of it. The island is green and has enchanting mountain villages you can visit. The food is wonderful, balancing incredible landscapes, top archaeological sites , outstanding beaches, and many interesting activities with kids. In a way, it is a perfect destination that you should not miss in your itinerary.

CycladesIslandHopping - Paros Island

Another fantastic Greek island is Paros, which is just a quick ferry ride from Naxos. It’s much more popular among young Greek crowds, making it lively and crowded during peak season.

Paros is the ideal fusion between Mykonos with its trendy beach clubs, eateries, and Naxos , thanks to the fantastic beaches and authentic inland villages.

On the downside, it can be considered more fit for a younger crowd, so if you’re after a family place, relaxing and quiet , then Paros could be replaced by Naxos in your itinerary.

Having reached a favored status, chosen by young people who cannot afford a holiday in Mykonos , has made prices go up a little, not much, but definitely noticeable by Greece’s standards.

Those traveling on a budget should remember this and plan well ahead to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Superb beauty, astonishing beaches, and incredible whitewashed landscapes are also part of the Ios atmosphere. Ios is one of the most beautiful Aegean islands you can visit, yet it has earned the fame of being an island for young people and party animals… Not so much so, but indeed, there’s some truth beneath this common belief.

Ios can be considered the party capital of the Cyclades; there are plenty of clubs and bars, and night beach parties are part of the deal, too. This makes Ios an option for teens and young adults who are less loved by families.

CycladesIslandHopping - Milos Island (Kleftiko Cove)

Milos is a small, pretty, and quiet Greek Island in the Cyclades, easy to visit quickly. The island features incredible things to do despite being relatively small. You can explore traditional white villages, check archaeological sites , eat delicious food in authentic Greek tavernas, and relax on the island’s magnificent beaches.

Sharing the exact volcanic origin as Santorini , Milos is one of the many magnificent Greek Islands at the southernmost part of the Cyclades Island cluster. And it’s precisely because of its volcanic past that Milos has a stunning lunar landscape and bizarre coastline with some of the most exotic beaches you can find in Greece .

Although Milos has been blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches of the Aegean , some of these unique beaches are very hard to access without a boat. This means that those who are not so keen on swimming might have difficulty reaching the water by jumping from a boat.

Despite beautiful beaches being a key trademark of Milos, this moon-like landscape may not be the right place for you if you prefer traditional sandy beaches.

Brands We Use And Trust

Folegandros is by far one of the less-visited islands in Greece . It’s gorgeous, peaceful and calm.

Spend time in Hora, the main port, perched on a cliff overlooking the Aegean. Roam the pedestrian-only center and take time to admire the picturesque view from the dramatic cliffs.

Folegandros is further south; low season times (think of May and October) still offer impressive enough beach weather. We suggest spending time at Karavostasi Beach; with its fine pebbles, you will need beach shoes, but it’ll be worth it . Rent a sunbed under the shade and curl up with that book you’ve been waiting all year to read.

Syros Island Greece_Ermoupoli town

Syros is a small but prosperous Cycladic Island, the capital of the Cyclades. A relatively recent touristic development makes it entirely off the beaten track and relatively free from mass tourism. It’s a perfect place for a tranquil holiday and ideal for enjoying pristine , empty beaches , traditional villages, excellent gastronomy, and local music.

Syros Island is famous for its excellent restaurants, its rebetika music, and some delicious sweets such as loukoumi (Turkish Delight), mandolata (nougat), and halvadopita (a softer kind of nougat).

Ermoupolis, the capital of Syros, shines with a myriad of neoclassical mansions of exquisite taste and elegance, beautiful churches, and romantic alleys . The city is also close to some of the most amazing Syros beaches, most of them concentrated on the southern and western coasts.

Kythnos Island

Kythnos Island_Kolona two sided sandy beach

Kythnos is a relatively mountainous Cycladic island destination, not far from Athens, making it a convenient and nearby destination for a weekend or a short escape from Athens.

The coast of Kythnos boasts over 70 different beaches, so there’s no shortage of magnificent places to swim and sunbathe on the Aegean, including the lovely strip of Kolona Beach on the northwest of the island that connects Kythnos to the islet of Agios Loukas.

The island offers many outdoor activities and unique spots like hot springs and caves.

Easter In Greece - Santorini Church

In this Cyclades island-hopping itinerary, we show you what islands you should naturally visit . We know that not all the islands included here will be part of your trip, which allows you to plan the trip better.

As mentioned above, the best thing you can do is start your trip from the island further from Athens , which is Santorini. You can get there by ferry (from 6 to 10 hours ferry trip) or by plane in less than an hour.

You’re not tired and full of energy at the beginning of your trip, so the long journey will not look so long. Once you have visited the whitewashed island, the famous Caldera villages, and the black beaches, you should move on to the Ios if this island is also included in your itinerary .

Ios is the closest  island to Santorini , meaning several boats and ferries connect both islands daily.

The trip is less than an hour, so you can certainly add it to your trip if you love parties and renowned beaches, too. Also, Milos has ferry connections to Santorini , so this is another option to move forward on your route if you intend to skip Ios.

Paros and Naxos are the two following islands you should visit. Both are easy to reach from Ios island , so they are the ones that should come next. Being bigger and with plenty of things to do, we suggest you start visiting Naxos, which is also very close to Santorini, something you should consider if Ios is not part of the islands you plan to visit .

If you love more traditional places, entirely off the beaten track, it’s not a bad idea to drop Paros and, from Naxos, head directly to Amorgos . The island is a magnificent destination if you love to hike or are longing to spend a relaxing holiday , where a simpler lifestyle is a priority for you, instead of parties or nightclubs.

Mykonos is connected via ferry only with Naxos, Ios, and Santorini . So, remember this if you plan to include it in your Cyclades itinerary.

Paros has gorgeous beaches; Santa Maria is a broad, sandy shore loved by families traveling to Greece . Kolymbithres is a bizarre shore with a lunar landscape and soft rocks eroded by the wind and the sea.

Santorini, a volcanic island, is famous for its spectacular geography and beautiful sunset views from Oia. Paros is known for its tranquility and the and lovely port town of Naoussa. Mykonos boasts glamour and a vibrant nightlife, with its Little Venice being a favorite place for many. Delos holds historical significance, Syros exudes elegance, and Kythnos features beautiful beaches and acrystal-clearear waters.

What is a recommended method to travel across the Cyclades?

A small ship tour is highly recommended for traveling across the Cyclades. It provides a direct route to the islands, including both larger islands and small, quiet islands. These tours offer excellent choices for efficient travel between locations, including the opportunity for swim stops in crystal-clear waters. Ferry schedules, particularly with companies like Blue Star Ferries, are also a good option, especially if you’re planning your own trip.

When is the best time to visit the Cyclades?

The best time to visit the Cyclades is during the shoulder season, particularly in late September or October. During these months, the weather is still pleasant, but you avoid the huge crowds of tourists and the extreme heat of the summer months. This period is also potentially less expensive, making it a perfect time for those looking for a mix of good weather and value.

What are the travel options to the Cyclades?

Travel to the Cyclades can be achieved via international flights directly to islands like Santorini and Mykonos or through a domestic flight to Athens followed by a ferry ride from mainland Greece. I’ve looked at lots of websites to plan our trip and this one is so much more useful than the others I’ve looked at. Thank you!

Thanks so much Christiana, that makes me feel very good. Enjoy your vacation.

Thank you for all this wonderful information. I am a bit confused with the website however. I notice when clicking on a link for hot springs in Kythnos, it takes me to a hot springs in Turkey. I have noticed the same when clicking various other links, it takes me to info seemingly unrelated. Can you please explain. Thanks so much!

No sure, what to explain?

Your guide so much good to help planning.

Sailing The Cyclades: The Best 1 Week Itinerary

Sailing the Cyclades is a unique way of exploring the most beautiful islands in Greece. Whether you are a sailing enthusiast or this is your first time on a sailboat, the Cyclades islands offer an idyllic and diverse sailing experience. The 1-week sailing in the Cyclades itinerary below will take you to some of the most beautiful and secluded spots around these Greek islands.

The Cyclades are a group of islands in the Aegean Sea which home some of the most important Greek ruins, such as Akrotiri in Santorini or the Temple of Apollo in Naxos. The islands are famous for their stunning beaches and are a popular destination for sun seekers. The Cyclades have roughed terrain but also some of the most beautiful Greek villages, with white houses and churches with blue domes overlooking the sea.

With crystal-clear waters, snow-white beaches, and charming villages, this route is sure to leave you with memories of a lifetime. So grab your sailing jacket and sunglasses, and let’s set sail!

Sailing The Cyclades: The Best 7 Day Itinerary

A woman smiling at the camera sitting on a small sailing boat wearing a blue tshirt, white shorts, black sunglasses, and a black life vest. The yacht is on the sea, crossing a wave.

This 1 week sailing the Cyclades guide includes some of the most popular and well-known tourist destinations, along with some hidden gems that are only easily reached by sailboat.

During the summer months, from around June to September, you should be aware of the Meltemi winds . These winds blow from the north and can reach up to 50knts. They will often blow from a week at a time.

They are well forecasted so make sure you download the best sailing apps for the area before you arrive. This itinerary is designed to take these winds into account.

Day 1: Santorini

A view of the town of Oia in Santorini from the sea. The white houses are on top of a tall cliff

Start your sailing adventure on the beautiful island of Santorini. There are several reasons why Santorini is the best place to hire your charter boat from.

The first and obvious reason is that Santorini has a major airport so it is easily reached at any time of the year. It is also well connected by sea, with regular ferries from a number of islands and from the mainland.

The second reason is that Santorini is a must-visit island in the Cyclades, but it isn’t well set up for sailors. There are very few anchorages and the marinas get booked up months in advance. By starting your trip here you will have a chance to explore before leaving the harbour and again when returning, without any of the hassles of booking a space or trying to find a well-protected anchorage.

Finally we would advise starting your trip here is down to the predominant winds. With the Meltemi blowing from the north it’s better to begin your journey beating into the wind, so that you can be sure of a pleasant downwind sail back even if the Meltemi starts to blow.

Where to Visit in Santorini

A view of the white houses in Santorini at sunset. In prim plan there are two windmills

– Explore the beautiful capital of Fira, with its famous white buildings and blue domed churches.

– Visit Oia for stunning sunset views and picturesque streets lined with shops and cafes.

– Take a dip in the hot springs at Palea Kameni or explore the volcanic island by boat.

– Sample delicious local wines at one of Santorini’s many vineyards.

– Enjoy the local Santorini food which uses ingredients grown on the island such as tomatoes and white aubergines.

– For more things to do in Santorini, check out my itinerary for the island, by clicking here .

A photo of a woman looking towards the sunset. She is with the back at the camera. In front of her, burry, you can see the sun going down and the sky all orange.

After a night in Santorini, set sail for the nearby island of Ios. This small island may not be as well known as its neighbours, but it has some hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Paralia Bay on the south of the island is a great anchorage to shelter in from northerly winds, and the sandy beach there is beautiful.

If you’re looking for night life and seafood restaurants then head to the port of Ios on the west side of the island instead and enjoy a night out in this vibrant town.

Where to Visit in Ios

A small church on top of a hill, with a path leading downhill to the village below, which has white houses. Beyond, you can see the sea. It's sunset so the atmosphere is very warm.

– Hike up to the viewpoint at Skarkos for panoramic views over the island.

– Visit the tomb of Homer, believed by many to be the final resting place of the famous poet.

– Explore Chora, the charming main town of Ios with its winding cobbled streets and traditional Greek architecture.

– Spend a day lounging on Mylopotos beach or sail to other nearby beaches like Manganari or Kalamos.

Day 3: Schoinousa

An old metal green bell hanged on the branch of a tree with a rusty chain.

After Ios, continue sailing east to the small and peaceful island of Schoinousa. The island’s several anchorages offer perfect shelter from all winds, with crystal-clear water for swimming and snorkelling.

Some people call Schoinousa the undiscovered Santorini, and it certainly has that feel about it. With its pretty little backstreets and white-washed houses you could spend all afternoon sitting in a taverna here and watching the world go by (slowly!) Without all the crowds you will feel as though you’re one of the locals.

Where to Visit in Schoinousa

A view of a white village on the shores of the sea

– Explore the charming main village of Chora and sample some delicious local food at one of the tavernas.

– Hike to a deserted beach on the south coast or sail around the island to visit other secluded beaches like Kato Koufonisi or Psili Ammos.

– Take a dip in the natural spring at Agia Anna or visit the church nearby for panoramic views over the island.

Day 4: Naxos

A woman wearing a blue shirt, blue shorts and a white headband sitting on top of a cliff, looking at the scenery below. There are two boats anchored in the bay below, where the water changes from a turquoise colour to a more deeper blue

From Schoinousa, sail northeast to the largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos. It’s well-protected ports make it a great choice for sailors, and with its ancient sites and beautiful beaches there is plenty to see and do here.

On the western side of the island lies Naxos Town which is a great place to base yourself. There is also a well equipped marina here if you’re out of water! Here you can spend a day wandering through marble-paved streets and exploring Ancient ruins like Portara , the giant marble gate left behind by 6th century BC builders.

Where to Visit in Naxos

A sailing boat in the middle of the sea, at sunset. The sky is red and orange.

– Take a hike up Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades islands at 1004m, for breathtaking views over Naxos and neighbouring islands on a clear day.

– Visit the ancient site of Apollon Temple in Flerio, believed to be one of the largest temples in Greece.

– Relax on a beach such as Agios Prokopios or Plaka, where you can also find watersports and activities like windsurfing and stand up paddle boarding.

Day 5: Paros

A sailing boat on the sea, surrounded by small islands which look inhabited. The sky is orange, preparing for the sunset.

On day 5 sail the short hop west to the beautiful island of Paros. This is a bustling island with plenty going on, but it’s well worth visiting for its stunning beaches and iconic villages like Naousa with its Venetian harbour.

You can anchor right outside Naousa alongside the super yachts and vintage sailboats. The bay has protection from almost every wind angle depending on where you set hook in the large anchorage.

Where to Visit in Paros

A white town on the shore of the sea. There are small boats anchored along the shore. The houses come all the way to the edge of the water.

– Visit Marpissa village for stunning traditional architecture and a taste of local life on the island.

– Relax on one of Paros’ many beaches such as Golden Beach or Pounda beach where you can also try out watersports like kitesurfing.

– Dine on the harbourfront and sample the freshly caught fish.

Day 6: Delos & Lefkes

A wide angle photo of the white sailing boat whilst it is sailing over the blue water.

On day 6 take a day trip from Paros to the nearby island of Delos , a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. The birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, it was once a bustling port before being abandoned in the 7th century AD.

In the afternoon you can start your sail back down south. Stop at the well-protected Tsoukalia Beach and spend the evening exploring the pretty ancient town of Lefkes.

Day 7: Return to Santorini

A panoramic view of Fira, in Santorini. The town is on top of a cliff, on the left hand side of the photo. On the right hand side is the caldera of the volcano, with cruisers and sailing boats anchored.

After a jam-packed week of sailing the Cyclades it’s time to head back to Santorini and return your charter boat. Hopefully you will have the winds on your side on this leg of the sail, and you should make excellent time.

Top Tips For Sailing The Cyclades

A photo taken from the yacht, at sunset. On the right you can see the front of the sailing boat, whilst on the left there is the sea. The bold red and orange colours of the sky reflect in the sea below making it look fiery as well

  • As mentioned earlier, the predominant summer winds blow from the north. During the shoulder season and winter months keep an eye out for storms and high winds from the south.
  • Most of the anchorages here have sandy bottoms. Make sure your sailboat has one of the best anchors for sand , and that it’s dug in well (especially when the Meltemi winds are forecast!)
  • During the summer the Cyclades are hot, but because of the windier days the evenings can feel a little chilly. Bring a few warm layers for cooler nights on board.
  • Greek food is delicious, so try to eat out at a local taverna at least once. Gyros, saganaki, Greek salads, and freshly caught seafood are some of the most popular choices.

Conclusion: Sailing The Cyclades

A woman holding a white cup with stripes with both her hands. She is sitting down on the sailing boat, looking towards the right. She is wearing a white shirt.

The Cyclades is one of Greece’s most challenging cruising grounds, but also one of its most rewarding. In exchange for some high winds, you will be greeted with the friendliest of people, the bluest waters, and the prettiest towns and villages. This is the sailing adventure of a lifetime in one of the best cruising grounds in the world.

The Cyclades look like a dream! I’ve never been to Greece, but this is added to my itinerary when I get there! Saving for later.

Your pictures look great and this is a great itinerary. My parents were just there about a month ago and said it was amazing! I now need to put it on my list of places to visit.

Sailing from Santorini to Athens was fabulous. We were not aware there were 2 separate sailing trips on the same boat. One from Santorini to Mykonos with Erwin as the skipper & the 2nd one was Mykonos to Athens with Marko as the Skipper. Both were experienced skippers with a lot of knowledge & great people skills. The groups of people were also good & easy to get on with. We understood that we booked twin share accommodation & were surprised to find that we were supposed to share a bed. We are 2 friends travelling together & not a couple. I slept on the lounge for 2 weeks so we had separate beds. The pre information was good but far too long. It would be great if it could be condensed. Overall a great experience with 2 fabulous skippers.

This tour was amazing. Had the best time. It was awesome, but too short because I didn’t wanted to be over yet. Seen so much beautiful places and the tour guide Keira was the best. This was my 3th tour with trutravels and definitely going to book with tru again!

Authentic Greek Islands Tour

Authentic Greek Islands

We did the Greek Island hopping vacation in June 2022. It was the best experience ever. We were completely looked after for transportation (air, land and ferry) and accommodations. It couldn’t possibly have been better organized and I will travel with Wingbuddy again. We are looking at the South Africa tour right now.

7 Best Boat Tours in Naxos

best boat tours in Naxos

  • 4 Pinterest

As the largest of the Cyclades islands , Naxos is the perfect starting point for trips to many nearby islands. Small boats, ferries, and some of the best boat tours in Naxos depart from the only port in town regularly – more frequently in summer but also throughout the year for those thinking of arriving during the off-season.

When it comes to island-hopping , Naxos offers plenty of options. Catch a ride for a short trip to nearby destinations or embark on an all-day cruise to explore gorgeous beaches and the rich blue waters of the Aegean Sea . While Naxos has its own charm and plenty to offer, the best way to explore the Greek islands is by getting on the water and sailing away.

Whether you’re up for an active day of swimming and snorkeling or you want to sit back and sunbathe as you enjoy the stunning views, there’s a boat tour out there for you.

What are the most popular boat tours in Naxos?

How much does a boat tour in Naxos cost?

How long does a boat trip last, where do boat tours depart from, what are the best places to visit during a boat tour in naxos, when is the best time for a boat trip in naxos, travel tips.

catamaran cruise, Naxos

If your idea of a great day out on the water includes an all-inclusive tour, this is the one for you. Leave everything at home except your suntanning lotion – this cruise comes equipped with snorkel gear, complimentary drinks, and a traditional Greek lunch prepared with fresh local products.

Just sit back to soak up the sun as you start your trip on a modern comfortable catamaran. The trip starts at 9:30 am at the Naxos marina and lasts for eight hours, so you’ll have plenty of time to both relax and be active. Have some coffee or snacks and get ready for a morning of swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

catamaran cruise in Naxos

When you get back on the boat, you’ll enjoy a hearty Greek lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients (a vegetarian option is available if you let the company know in advance) with beer, raki and wine included, followed by some relaxing sailing around the island. There are plenty of places to sit, both in the sun and in the shade, to admire the beautiful views as the waves rock and splash against the boat.

The boat even offers wi-fi so you can post photos of your amazing day out to your social media as you experience it. This tour runs outside of the high season and will provide an alternative route in case of rough seas or adverse weather conditions. This guarantees that the captain will be able to find the best destination no matter the weather.

2 – Mykonos and Delos boat tour

Mykonos and Delos boat tour from Naxos

Delos and Mikonos are two of the most popular island destinations near Naxos. Delos is home to a UNESCO world heritage site dating back 3,000 years to the ancient Greek civilization. Sitting right against the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea, Delos is said to be the birthplace of gods Apollo and Artemis and today offer stunning ruins to be explored.

Just minutes away is Mikonos, a vibrant island famous for its cobbled streets flanked by cosmopolitan shops and restaurants and its vibrant nightlife. If you’re short on time and want to visit both islands, a Mykonos and Delos boat tour could be the perfect solution.

Some tours offer a private guide and “skip the line” tickets so you can explore the archeological site at Delos, followed by a guided walking tour of Mykonos harbor and its beautiful white and blue town.

Mykonos and Delos boat trip from Naxos

Other tours give you free time to explore Mykonos Town on your own, do some shopping or grab a quick bite to eat. Some tours even offer a basic package that only includes boat transport between the islands, so you can decide how long to spend on each island and how to use your time at each stop.

Most tours last at least half a day, while some are as long as 10 hours. Check in advance if the tour of your choice includes lunch and snacks/drinks. Otherwise, you’ll have to plan on bringing food or use your stop at Mykonos for a nice meal overlooking the sea.

3 – Small Cyclades boat tour

Small Cyclades boat tour from Naxos

The Small Cyclades (sometimes known as the Lesser Cyclades) is a group of 32 tiny islands that form part of the Cyclades archipelago. Only four of the tiny islands are permanently inhabited, all with populations of just a few hundred people.

Because of their size and lack of amenities (no hotels, restaurants or shops on any of the uninhabited islands), the Small Cyclades provide a great secluded experience, where the emphasis is on enjoying quiet walks under the sun, reading a book or breathing the warm air as you dig your toes into the sand.

No taxis here (rent a bike or a scooter instead) and accommodations are offered in charming little bed and breakfasts or pensions.

If you want to get away from the big crowds that take over Santorini and Mykonos during high season, an all-inclusive day sailing tour from Naxos to the Small Cyclades is the perfect way to escape.

Small Cyclades boat trips from Naxos

Board the small sailboat cruise early in the morning and get ready for a full day of snorkeling, swimming, and just enjoying the beauty the islands have to offer. Both breakfast, lunch, and snacks (as well as bottled water and alcoholic beverages) are included in the tour, and you can sit back and enjoy it as you sail through the sea on the lookout for dolphins.

Everything you need (including snorkeling equipment) is included, so you can just focus on having a great time. You don’t even have to worry about photos – the crew will take professional photos throughout the day and you will have a chance to download them all at the end of your trip as your souvenir.

4 – Koufonissia boat tour

Koufonissia boat tours from Naxos

If you’re looking for a place to unwind surrounded by turquoise waters and golden sands, the two islands that make up Koufonisia in the heart of the Aegean sea will give you that and more.

Koufonisia consists of the Ano Koufonissi and the Kato Koufonissi islands. Ano Koufonissi is home to a vibrant village filled with great cafes, lively restaurants, and plenty of seaside taverns. Great beaches, a natural pool with crystal clear waters, and plenty of places to explore on foot make this a great destination.

Kato Koufonissi is exactly the opposite – the islet has been uninhabited since the 1960s, but you can still find remnants of a deserted village, plenty of migratory birds, and stunning golden beaches like Nero (the most popular of the beaches here), the tiny Detis with its golden sands, and the very picturesque Panagia and big trees offering shade.

Koufonissia boat trips from Naxos

A great way to discover these two islands is with a full-day cruise. This 10-hour-long adventure starts as you get on a traditional wooden boat and head toward Kato Koufonissi.

Here, you’ll have time for swimming, snorkeling, and exploring before you get back on the boat for a rich Greek BBQ of souvlaki, local potato salad, and tzatziki with unlimited water, soft drinks, and house wine.

Your next stop is Ano Koufonissi, where you’ll get three free hours to visit the beach or explore the village and maybe pick up some souvenirs or take photos as you walk the beautiful shoreline. Once you get back on the boat, you can grab a glass of wine and sit back to enjoy the views as you sail back to your point of departure.

5 – South Naxos full-day cruise

South Naxos boat tour

This unique all-day-long cruise allows you to explore the less visited southeast coast of the island. Naxos’ port and most popular beaches are all on the west side of the island. This is where visitors go for well-equipped beaches with all the amenities, great restaurants, and windsurfing.

The east coast, especially towards the south of the island, is home to a number of smaller but equally stunning beaches that see a lot fewer visitors. They offer a chance to enjoy the stunning blue waters and golden sands in a quieter, more secluded space.

This seven-hour-long cruise tour starts at 10 am at the Agia Anna Port, where you’ll meet your captain and board a traditional wooden boat. From there, you’ll start sailing towards the hidden beaches of the southeast coastline, with the first stop at Aliko Beach, which sits against cedar trees.

South Naxos boat trip

You’ll then head to Rina on the Naxian sea. Accessible only by boat, the rocky bay where Rina is located offers picturesque views and crystal turquoise waters perfect for swimming. After exploring Rina Cave, return to the boat for a traditional Greek barbecue lunch served with unlimited water, soft drinks, and house wine.

After another stop at the secluded Kalados bay, you’ll make your way to Pyrgaki beach, famous for its dunes and little secret coves that open up to the blue waters. You’ll visit the tiny Byzantine Agios Sostis church before heading back to your departure point by 5 pm.

6 – Rhina Cave catamaran tour

Rina Cave boat tour in Naxos

Naxos is surrounded by tons of tiny islands and islets – many offering exciting activities, others uninhabited and perfect for a secluded getaway. These include the Small Cyclades islands as well as additional islands like the blue and white Amorgos, picturesque Paros, and quiet sandy Donousa that are slightly farther away.

Some of these islands can be accessed via ferries departing from Naxos, but if your stay on the main island is short, coordinating ferry times can be complicated and you won’t be able to visit many of them in just a few days.

An easier and more effective way to island-hop from Naxos is to join a boat tour that takes you deep into the sea and around the small islands to discover turquoise waters, soft golden beaches, and perfect snorkeling spots.

This 10-hour-long catamaran tour departs from Naxos Port at 8:30 am. For two hours, you’ll sail around Naxos, enjoying pristine views of the blue waters and the soft breeze, until you reach Rhina Cave. Here, you’ll have to dive into the cool sea under the cave’s rooftop, discovering a world of underwater fish and ancient stalactites.

Rina Cave boat trip from Naxos

This is also a great area for snorkeling (all equipment is included), and you’ll have enough time to try that out before you go back to the boat to continue on your tour.

Next, your captain will take you to one of the many islands around Nexos for some swimming and snorkeling. Your destination varies depending on the weather and the season, so your guide can choose the best destination.

On your way to this slice of paradise, enjoy some wine or a cold beer on the boat’s deck. Once there, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the sea while your hosts prepare a Greek lunch (vegetarian option available).

One more island awaits you after you get a chance to eat and relax for a while. You can choose to chill out in the shade at your last stop or try out more water activities before you sail back to Naxos Port while enjoying some fresh fruits and coffee.

7 – Boat rental in Naxos

Boat rental in Naxos

For the ultimate in privacy, you can’t beat renting your own boat when in Nexos. Boats are available in all sizes and prices here, and you can find one that fits your budget and needs.

Smaller motorboats with an engine smaller than 30 hp can be rented without a license. This means bigger, more powerful boats like speedboats are out of the question, but smaller boats like cruisers or charter boats might be easy to rent.

When renting, you’ll be offered comprehensive training in safety standards and how to navigate the boat if you have no previous experience with it.

This is a great option if you just want to explore nearby islands and want the freedom of making your own schedule and exploring at your own pace.

rent a boat in Naxos

For larger boats, you will need a license from a recognized sailing organization in order to secure a rental. Certain boats also require you to have a co-skipper – meaning a second person that also has a license and is traveling with you.

If this isn’t possible, you can always rent a boat that comes with its own captain. This is the perfect option for week-long trips, though it’s possible to rent a boat with a captain even for one day of island hopping.

Renting a boat with a captain will increase the overall cost, but if you’re traveling in a big group or if the boat is large enough to provide overnight accommodations, the costs will even out in the end. Larger vessels might also provide crew members so you can have a cook or a hostess making the experience feel even more luxurious.

  • boat rentals in Naxos

Naxos boat tour price

There are plenty of boat tours in Naxos to fit any budget. Count around 50 euros for a half day boat tour, and 120 euros for a full boat tour including lunch. As you might expect, the more a tour includes, the higher the price. For example, a basic day cruise will cost less than an island-hopping cruise that takes you snorkeling and makes several stops. Cruises offering small-group tours will cost more than larger boats that can carry a larger number of passengers.

For the ultimate in luxury, you can always rent your own boat (and, if you don’t have a license, also hire a captain) for the day. Private rentals are more affordable (if you are a large group) than you might think, and you’ll get not only privacy but also a chance to create your own schedule and itinerary so you can focus on visiting your favorite places.

Also keep in mind that while Greece’s sailing season lasts from April to early November, prices for everything, including boat tours, go up between June and August. If you arrive in April-May and September or later, you’ll usually pay lower prices.

How long your boat trip in Naxos will last depends on which type of tour you choose. Shorter tours can last just 3-4 hours and you often have the choice of a morning or an afternoon trip that best suits your needs.

Longer tours – especially those that include several stops and take you to more than one island – can be as long as 10 hours and sometimes include a chance to catch the sunset on the water.

Private boat rentals offer even more freedom, as you can get a rental for half or a full day, or even for more than one day for an overnight adventure. Naxos has many options for private boat rentals with or without a captain for multi-day and weekly trips.

Traditional sightseeing tours sometimes only spend a couple of hours in the water but you get plenty of time to enjoy the beach or get off at different locations to explore on foot. Other dock or stop near the shoreline so you can jump into the water for some snorkeling and swimming.

With so many options to suit your itinerary (no matter how open or busy it is), there’s certainly a boat tour available to suit your needs.

Naxos boat tours departure location

The island of Naxos only has one ferry port located on the edge of Naxos Town. This is where all ferries, private boats, and yachts depart from.

Since the port is easily accessible by buses and taxis, some tours ask you to meet directly here. Other tours will offer pickup from your hotel or a more centralized point and take you to the port. Make sure you confirm this in advance when booking your tour.

Keep in mind that during inclement weather, the waters might be too choppy for departure and the tours can be postponed or canceled. If the tour is postponed for just a couple of hours, the area around the port offers plenty of restaurants, shops and attractions for a nice break until it’s time to depart.

best places to visit during a boat tour in Naxos

Naxos is located in an ideal location in the South Aegean sea. This large island has a significant port that welcomes ferries and serves as the departure point for many cruises, making it the perfect starting point to explore Greek-island charm.

The Small Cyclades are a popular destination from Naxos because they are so close and offer something for everybody –from bustling little villages with great food to beautiful beaches to plenty of options for swimming and snorkeling. The pristine golden beaches of Pano Koufonissi and the untouched coastline of Donoussa are beautiful destinations too, and so are the Paros and Antiparos islands with their untouched beaches and laid-back luxury.

If you’re up for a long day out, Delos and Mykonos top the list as the most popular destinations from Naxos. There’s much to do and explore on both islands so expect a full day of sightseeing whether you’re taking a cruise or traveling on your own.

The key to island-hopping successfully is in the planning. If you’re using ferries, check itineraries in advance so you can plan the connections properly.

If you don’t have a lot of time in Naxos, a cruise tour is a lot more effective, as you can find one that covers several islands and activities in one day. Private tours are especially a good choice during middle and low season, as the ferries don’t run so frequently and you might not be able to visit more than one island per day.

best time for a boat trip in Naxos

Naxos is a stunning destination all year long, but if you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the water, some months are certainly better than others. The warmer season starts in April and lasts until October, with the hottest months being June to August. In September, the air starts to cool down but the water remains warm and inviting, perfect for a swim as you explore the islands on a boat tour.

Keep in mind that summer is peak travel season, so you’ll find bigger crowds and higher prices. If you’re visiting during this period, make sure you book a boat tour well in advance, as these tend to sell out. These are the best months for private or small-size tours so you can guarantee some privacy and space, especially if you’re booking multi-day tours.

Summers also bring the infamous Meltemi winds to the islands. The hot and dry winds can be a good or a bad thing, depending on what your plans are. If you’re hoping to sail or hoping to add some windsurfing or kitesurfing to your water adventures, the months of July and August will offer the best wind conditions for it. Keep in mind, however, that the Meltemi winds can make the ocean very choppy on the strongest blowing days.

Winter temperatures average around 15 degrees Celsius in Naxos. While this is great weather for hiking, exploring indoor venues, and even sunset walks on the beach, it might be a bit too cold for boat tours. Keep in mind that many tour companies stop working or work on a limited schedule during the winter.

  • Plan to spend at least three days in Naxos. Less than that will barely give you time to enjoy a couple of beaches but nothing beyond that.
  • Don’t just use the town of Naxos as an arrival and departure point. There’s plenty to see and do here, so spend some time discovering the postcard-perfect cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and vineyards. There are great hikes around town and you could even make it to the top of Mount Zeus if you’re up for a steep walk.
  • Venture away from the most popular beaches. While Plaka Beach and Agios Prokopios beach have plenty to offer in the way of activities, entertainment, and amenities, they sometimes lack the charm of more secluded sandy stretches like Orkos beach and Panermos beach, which offer privacy away from the crowds.
  • Get on a boat. Whether it’s a cruise that just last a couple of hours or a full-day adventure to other islands, Naxos’ surroundings are never better than when seen from the water. There are plenty of cruises available (especially during high season) to fit any budget, so whether you want a leisurely sail or a chance to swim and snorkel around the coast, you’ll find something available.
  • Pack lots of sun protection, including high SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and some bug spray if you’re visiting during the humid summer months. Bring a loose/oversized button-down shirt to cover up when the sun gets too strong – it will keep you from burning and make long days out in the sun more comfortable.
  • Don’t spend all your time on the beach. We get it – it’s hard to pull yourself away from the stunning coastline. But Naxos and the surrounding islands also offer plenty of other marvels, including archeological sites, caves, and vibrant villages with great shopping and food. Find time in your itinerary to explore some of that as well.
  • Visit in the off-season if you’re on a budget. Any month outside July and August will be cheaper and you’ll be able to find better deals on flights, accommodations, and tours.

Final thoughts

So, there you go – a list of some of the best boat tours in Naxos so you can find the perfect option to fit your budget and itinerary. Looking for a day packed with activities at some of the most popular islands? There’s a tour that can give you just that. Want some privacy away from the crowds? Things to know.

Self-guided cycling tours are crafted for a personalized and flexible experience on two wheels. Discover wonders at your leisure, with the liberty to modify your route or itinerary as you wish. Our committed team meticulously takes care of all aspects, including accommodation arrangements, comprehensive planning, GPS navigation assistance, and ongoing support, to ensure a peaceful and captivating trip. This journey celebrates independence, personal discovery, and authentic cultural encounters.

Our tours are divided into three levels of difficulty: Leisurely , Moderate , and Challenging , defined by the typical daily itinerary, though there can be variations in challenge during the trip.

Leisurely tours are perfect for those looking for a relaxed journey amidst beautiful landscapes, without the need for long-distance cycling or navigating difficult terrains. Typically, these tours cover 30-50 km per day, with an elevation gain of up to 500m. This allows for numerous opportunities to enjoy the scenery, sample local cuisine, and visit quaint villages and towns along the route.

Moderate bike tours cater to those who desire a combination of picturesque routes and a bit of a challenge. Covering 50-80 km per day with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours take you through beautiful landscapes and charming villages, featuring both flat and hilly terrains. They provide plenty of chances for exploration and also offer a rewarding cycling experience.

Challenging bike tours are designed for seasoned cyclists looking to challenge themselves. These tours cover 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m and involve steep climbs and challenging routes. Suitable for those with a high level of fitness and stamina, they offer a sense of achievement and stunning views, making the effort worthwhile.

We are dedicated to finding the ideal match for your cycling journey. We work closely with a range of accommodation providers, all of whom adhere to our quality criteria, though their availability might change, particularly during high-demand seasons. Moreover, we offer the flexibility to customize your trip according to your personal tastes and budget, guaranteeing that we find the accommodation that best suits your needs.

We recommend booking your tour as soon as possible, particularly for sought-after tourist destinations where accommodation options are limited. Top choices tend to be reserved quickly, often getting fully booked for the summer season well before the arrival of spring.

The optimal cycling season in Greece extends from mid-April to mid-October. In higher elevation areas, such as the mountainous regions, it’s best to plan your cycling trips from mid-May to September.

Tours in Greece are feasible in light rain, provided you have suitable attire. Summer often brings afternoon thunderstorms, so starting your tours early in the day is advisable. Should challenging weather conditions be anticipated, we will endeavour to adapt the tour schedule accordingly.
