Here are 18 ideas for easy, family friendly weekend getaways from Washington D.C.

To help with planning your weekend I’ve listed driving distances, which all assume you aren’t leaving D.C. at rush hour. I like to spend roughly one night away for every hour we drive.

Some of these destinationss are close enough for a spontaneous overnight getaway or even a  staycation hotel stay.  Others are better for a two-or-three-night long weekend, or even a four-night mini-vacation.

the sprawling omni homestead is a destination resort in hot springs, va. it's a popular weekend destination from washington, especially for famlies with kids.

Surrounded by the gorgeous Allegheny mountains, Hot Springs is a historic town and home to, you guessed it, natural thermal springs.

The  Omni Homestead Resort  is a family friendly destination resort and the area’s main draw.

Your kids will be happy with the spring-fed outdoor pool complex, which includes a quite large family pool, water slides, a lazy river, a water-play area for little ones and outdoor whirlpool.

There’s a kids club onsite for your younger ones. Take advantage of it to soak in the adults-only warm spring-fed Garden Pool.

In  summer , outdoorsy families can try archery, take naturalist-guided gorge hikes, do a river-kayaking clinic or go hiking and biking on their own both within and beyond the resort grounds. For adventurous older kids, ziplining offers thrills and breathtaking views of the Hot Springs hills and trees

Come winter, watch the Omni Homestead turn into a  winter wonderland . Head outdoors for ice-skating, snow tubing and skiing or relax in the indoor pool.

Spend at least one afternoon in town, walking along the brick sidewalks and browsing local shops and antique stores. Check out a local brewpub as a reward for all that activity.

Drive Time:  90 minutes to the Front Royal Entrance By Erin Gifford from Go Hike Virginia

2 slices of merengue-topped blackberry-ice cream pie with a view of the shenandoah valley.

Shenandoah National Park  is a fantastic weekend getaway destination, especially for outdoor lovers. From the north entrance outside of Front Royal you can motor along  Skyline Drive , the 105-mile scenic byway that runs the length of the park. Of more than 75 viewpoints some of my favorite are Range View Overlook (milepost 17.1) and Spitler Knoll Overlook (milepost 48.0). Wow, do they have sweeping vistas across the Shenandoah Valley.

If you want to lace up your hiking boots, there are more than 500 miles of  hiking trails at Shenandoah National Park , including 101 miles of the famed  Appalachian Trail . The short and sweet hike to Little Stony Man Cliffs still delights with spectacular views of  Massanutten Mountain .

For a rock scramble, head to Bearfence Mountain, where your efforts will be rewarded with 360-degree panoramas. Waterfall lovers should head to tumbling Rose River Falls and Dark Hollow Falls in the middle of the park.

Beyond hiking, you can book your family on a horseback trail ride at  Skyland Stables  to see the Shenandoah Valley from atop a horse as you clip-clop across an old apple orchard along wooded trails. The more adventuresome can book some time rock climbing or rappelling in the national park with  Shenandoah Mountain Guides .

Stay the weekend in a rustic-chic cabin or comfortable guest room at  Skyland , which sits at the highest point on Skyline Drive. Vibrantly-colored sunsets from the outdoor patio are among the best in the park. Don’t return home without indulging in a slice of the park’s signature mile-high  blackberry ice cream pie —delicious!

monticello, thomas jefferson's homeis small, unique shaped and with great valley views.

Home to one of America’s twenty-four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Charlottesville is an essential weekend getaway from Washington, D.C.

UNESCO named  Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville  Monticello is a house that is surprising in a lot of ways. A visit gives you real insight into Thomas Jefferson the man, as opposed to the historical icon; you can probably bring any kids on the tour who are old enough to know who Jefferson is. It also has stellar views of the surrounding area.

You can only see the house by timed  guided  or  self-guided tours ; it’s a good idea to make a  reservation  ahead of your stay.

The town is not all about looking at old buildings though. Charlottesville is about a 25-minute drive from the  Shenandoah National Park  where  Skyline Drive  and  Blue Ridge Parkway  meet. Whether you drive north or south you’ll find trailheads, overlooks and beautiful scenery; time your weekend stay to the fall foliage season and you’ll have especially stunning   views of the  Blue Ridge Mountains .

You can drive part of the way to or from Charlottesville on Skyline Drive. It’s the scenic route in every sense of the phrase but it will add a good hour to your drive so consider your kids’ tolerance for driving before you commit to it.

Before heading out of town stop for at either  The Nook  or The  Korner Restaurant  for a big Southern diner breakfast that might include grits, biscuits, sausage gravy or fried chicken. Fill the kids up with fluffy pancakes or waffles; they’ll sleep off the carbs on the way home while you enjoy the scenery.

the long, sunny front porch of the blackburn inn in staunton, va

I wrote about Staunton, which sits northwest of Charelottesville, as a great destination for a couple’s getaway. But there’s plenty of reason to come with the kids, too.

It’s a cute town with an outsized selection of good, casual restaurants and microbreweries , including the sunny front porch of the Blackburn Inn , which is perfect for an afternoon drink and snack. Wright’s Dairy-Rite  is an authentic retro drive-in restaurant right on the edge of town; what kid won’t love that?

On a weekend getway Staunton is a great jumping off point for admiring waterfalls, visiting farms and horseback riding in the surrounding area.

Right in town, the  Blackfriars Playhouse  stages Shakespeare plays in ways that approximate how they were performed and watched in his day; something theater-loving teens will appreciate.  Woodrow Wilson’s Presidential Library  is here, too; a must for modern-history buffs.

It’s a 20-minute drive to that spot where the  Blue Ridge Pkwy  and  Skyline Drive  meet, giving you access to  Shenandoah’s  trails and vistas. It’s a bit less of a detour to take Skyline Drive back to D.C. from here than from Charlottesville. But it will still add an hour or more to your drive depending on where you pick it up.

lexington, va: one of it's charming shopping streets of one- and two-story brick buildings and vma in the background

Lexington, VA is south of Staunton and even more picturesque. It’s probably my top pick for a weekend getaway with kids in this part of Virginia. Location scouts like it as the backdrop for movies set in the small Southern towns and with good reason; it has a Mayberry-like charm.

Make a point of exploring the adjacent and contrasting campuses of bucolic  Washington & Lee University  and the impressive  Virginia Military Institute . Plan to either begin or end your walk at  Sweet Things Ice Cream Shoppe . Kids and parents love the shop’s rich and creamy renditions of classic flavors scooped onto waffle cones made in house.

A daytime  horse-drawn carriage ride  or an evening  ghost tour  are kid-friendly ways to learn about the town’s history and famous denizens. And a visit to  Stonewall Jackson’s house  sheds light on this conflicted Confederate leader. Kids will like the first-hand, personal view on history that a home provides.

The  Southern Inn  is one of the best places in town to get your fix of deep southern fare like fried chicken, braised greens and pimento cheese. Don’t miss the blue cheese potato chips and bacon-wrapped meatloaf; not entirely Southern but oh-so-good. The  Gin Hotel across the street has the best terrace in town. Make a point of having an afternoon drink or an early dinner here, outside if possible.

The  Hampton Inn  in town is quite a surprise, built around a restored historic mansion. Ask to stay in one of ten huge manor rooms with four-poster beds and fireplaces to enjoy a little pampering along with handy amenities like free breakfast in the Colonial-style dining room and an outdoor pool.

natural bridge state park in virginia is stunning with its towering stone arch. two tiny people stand beneath it to show the scale.

Natural Bridge State Park ,15 minutes outside of town, is a must-see. Take a short, easy walk into the gorge beneath the limestone arch for stunning views (there’s also a shuttle). Continue under the bridge to the recreated Monacan Indian Village for living history activities with costumed interpreters.

On your way back in to town stop at the  Great Valley Farm Brewery & Winery.   It sits at the top of a hill and has outdoor tables overlooking its vines and the surrounding valley below it. You can BYO snacks or even a full picnic. Kids and dogs are welcome to run around while you relax with chilled glass of rosé or a seasonal farmhouse ale.

the colorful row houses of the historically black jackson ward neighborhood in richmond, va are well worth seeing on a weekend visit.

Richmond’s slower pace and good variety of things to do make for an easy and relaxing weekend getaway.

History buffs can learn about the city’s complex history by visiting the  American Civil War Museum , the  Virginia Capitol Building  or the  John Marshall House .

To learn more about local Black history take a  self-guided walk  around the remaining blocks of  Jackson Ward , once one of the most thriving black communities in the U.S. Pause at the home of  Maggie Walker , an ardent late19th century civil rights activist and the first African-American woman to open a bank.

If you happen to be in town on the first Friday of the month head to the  Arts District for the  First Friday Art Walk , which starts at the kid-friendly hour of 5:00. Galleries, restaurants and shops participate.

For an outdoorsy Saturday, stroll the  Canal Walk , or the intriguing  Pipeline Walkway  or go kayaking on the  James River . Mountain biking families can take on the trails at the  Belle Island Skill Area   T

If it’s raining spend the day in the  Museum District , where you can see the largest collections of  Fabergé eggs  in the U.S. But your kids will thank you for seeking out hands-on activities at the nearby  Science Museum , the  Branch Museum of Architecture & Design  or, if they’re very young, the  Children’s Museum.

Rain or shine, top off your afternoon at one the microbreweries, cideries or meaderies in the burgeoning  Scott’s Addition Historic District .

If you’re feeling ambitious, before heading out of town spend some time at the sprawling  Maymont Estate , which has a historic mansion, acres of formal gardens, a farm and a wildlife center.

If you’re feeling lazy just hop on one of the weekends only  Riverfront Canal cruises . During the 40-minute tour in a canopied canal boat you’ll learn a bit more local history and see this charming city from a different vantage point.

Drive Time:  A little more than three hours.

kids play tug o' war on the streets of williamsbrug, va. you can do a weekend visit here if you plan well what you want to do.

With three living history museums, a waterpark, theme park and outdoor activities, too, Williamsburg can easily be a five-day vacation or more. But break it down into bite-size chunks and it can be a (very full) weekend getaway.

Take a full day for one of the living history museums:  Williamsburg ,  Yorktown  (my favorite) or  Jamestown . If you choose the latter, leave time to visit the actual  Jamestown settlement  down the road from the museum. It’s a National Historic site and ongoing archeological dig.

Then take a day for either  Water Country USA  or  Busch Gardens , which has a good half-dozen crazy scary roller coasters.

Take some time to relax with a kayak on the  James River , a walk along one of the area’s several nature trails or an afternoon at  York’s town beach .

It’s easy to find local beer and wine, seafood from the nearby coast and southern favorites like shrimp ‘n’ grits. My favorite spot is the  Yorktown Pub  (steps from the beach) for local clams, oysters and crab. They also have pub standards like chicken fingers for family members who don’t like fish.

Drive Time : About three hours

Three hours is about my driving-distance limit for a two-night vacation. Hershey, PA just squeezes under if you’re driving from D.C. Two nights is plenty if you just want to explore the main Hershey attractions , which include the them park, a water park, the Hershey Museum , Chocolate World and a trolley tour that mingles the story of Milton Hershey with a corny sing-along. My favorite is the  Hershey Museum , where you can do a tasting of drinking chocolate with cocoa beans from around the world.

There are also the ZooAmerica and the well-regarded Hershey Gardens and , but if you have extra time I recommend an afternoon in nearby Harrisburg, which has a great indoor market with plenty of Pennsylvania Dutch goods and food court with local beer and food purveyors from all corners of the globe. There is also the fantastic and huge Midtown Scholar bookstore and a lovely greenway that stretches for mile along the Susquehanna River .

There are plenty of a ffordable and familiar hotel chains near the theme park and in Harrisburg. But if you really want a treat boo a room at the Hotel Hershey or the Hershey Lodge , where you can enjoy shuttles to the Hershey attractions, huge indoor and outdoor pools with water park features, and onsite restaurants that will make you a chocolate martini .

Gettysburg seems to be a place families stop by on the way to someplace else. But there is enough in this historic town for it to be a destination in itself.  If you’re traveling with kids, the famous  Civil War battlefield  might be the least interesting thing in town. But that’s okay; some of the historic homes and smaller museums will draw them in. the National Park Service’s Visitor’s Center for the battlefield has a lot of cool things to do and see.

cherry crest farm

As a southern transplant to northern New Jersey, I’ve only recently had a chance to explore nearby Amish Country. But I was blown away by all the  things to do in Lancaster, PA .

Pennsylvania Dutch Country is a larger rural region with Lancaster as its main town. You can have first-hand Amish experiences, stay on a working farm, dive into the area’s deep history , get thrills at a kid-friendly amusement parks or partake in agri-tainment at family farms (like the above pedal carts at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm ). You can even spend the entire weekend knee-deep in train-related activities if that’s your thing.

Outdoorsy families can find  scenic hikes  that are relatively flat and kid-friendly, including in 544-acre  Central Park . Cyclists can hit any of several rail trails including the 14-mile  Northwest Lancaster County River bike trail . Your family can also try your hand at kayaking on the Susquehanna River.

You have to try P ennsylvania Dutch food during your weekend stay. The best way is at family-friendly all-you-can-eat restaurants like  Good N Plenty . In Lancaster town don’t miss the popular  Himalayan Curry & Grill  (reservations are a must for dinner). My go-to dessert spot is  Rachel’s Creperie  a fewbkocks away.

Lancaster is known as The Munich of America for its love of the lager beers , introduced by the area’s German immigrants (they were originally the Pennsylvania Deutsche and aren’t Dutch at all).  To see what the local beer is all about, stop in at one or two of the breweries on the  Lancaster County Ales Trail . Keep in mind, places that serve food are reliably kid-friendly but tasting rooms often are not.

Drive Time:  Just under three hours

Philadelphia’s  Historic District  is compact and just the right size for a weekend’s worth of exploring.  Independence Hall  and the  Visitor’s Center  are essential stops; fit in other museums and historic homes as you can.

When you need a break head to Franklin Fountain for ice cream, Shane Confectionary for handmade candy or Independence Beer Garden for regional beer, kid-friendly snacks and cornhole.

Beyond the historic district you must check out the  Franklin Institute , one of the best science museums around. Please Touch is an equally awesome children’s museum. The  Magic Garden is an amazing art space on the funky and always-evolving South Street.

If the weather is nice, explore the hip  Rittenhouse Square  neighborhood,  South Philly’s Italian enclave, the stately  U. Penn campus  or take in a bit of  Fairmont Park , which sprawls for miles on either side of the Schuylkill River and has tons to do.

colorful moravian tiles from the mercer tile works in bucks county, pa

This is another destination I visited for a couple’s weekend, but it is exceedingly kid friendly.  Explore any of several lovely county and state parks for hiking and biking ; ride the tow path that starts just across the Delaware River in  Lambertville,  or visit  Washington Crossing Historic Park , to learn about George Washington’s famous trip across the Delaware to Trenton, NJ.

The county has more than a dozen  pick-your-own farms  for summer and fall visits. And VisitBucks has  a list of every chocolate maker, bakery, café, ice cream store and doughnut shop  in the county to help you plan a really sweet weekend away.

New Hope  is the place to stay because of its variety of inns an small hotels , restaurants and shops. But take part of a day to visit  Doylestown , its quirky  Mercer Museum  and even quirkier  Fonthill Castle , both the inventions of local  Moravian-tile magnate Henry Mercer.

a nittany lion guarding the penn state campus in state college, pa

State College, Pennsylvania  is home to home of the  Nittany Lions , but there’s quite a bit to do around here even if you aren’t a football fan. You can explore quaint small towns, get outdoors, take in history and culture, or time your visit to one of its annual festivals.

Nearby  Bald Eagle State Park  offers hiking, boating, fishing, swimming, and camping. It’s an awesome place to escape the hurried pace of the big city. Wildlife abounds. Don’t forget to look up; you may just get a glimpse of a hawk or eagle. If you like the outdoors but not camping, check in to the  Nature Inn at Bald Eagle  nestled among the trees with stellar park views.

Just a few miles from campus, nature enthusiasts and hikers can conquer  Nittany Mountain .  The most popular hike is to the  Mike Lynch Overlook . It’s only a half mile but it scends 600 feet, making it a bit of a challenge. The reward is a spectacular view of the valley.

After your hike, reward yourself with one of more than 120 flavors of ice cream and sherbets at Penn State’s  Berkey Creamery .

Be sure to visit historic  Bellefonte . This historic small town with many wonderful examples of Victorian architecture has been home to seven governors. The town was also a stop along the Underground Railroad. Visit the  Bellefonte Art Museum  to see where freedom-seeking slaves once sought refuge.  Oh, and maybe check out the art, too.

Penn State’s enormous campus is home to five cosmopolitan museums including the  Palmer Museum of Art, Matson Museum of Anthropology, Earth & Mineral Sciences Museum & Art Gallery  and the  Frost Entomological Museum . Gardeners and horticulturalists will love the university’s  Arboretum .

Weekend Getaways to Maryland

Drive Time : 30 minutes

kids climb on pieces of the awakening on the beach at national harbor, an easy weekend getaway from washington, dc. hotels and shops are in the background.

National Harbor, just a water-taxi ride across the Potomac from Alexandria, is popular with Washington, DC parents looking for an easy night away or staycation treat.  Summer brings outdoor movies and music, a beach to play on. Winter brings holiday lights and seasonal festivities.

No matter the time of year, the Gaylord National resort hotel is a getaway in and of itself.  Rooms that face a soaring atrium, shops, restaurants, nighttime laser shows, special seasonal activities like ice sculptures and scavengers hunts. Plus, it has a good size pool. Why leave?

Tip:  If you don’t want to deal with traffic or want to give the kids a bit of an adventure, take the Metro to Alexandria, the trolley down King Street, and then one of those water taxis across to the hotel.

annapolis md state house

With plenty of things to do, small crowds and its walkable scale  Annapolis is ideal for a family weekend getaway.

In the center of this town that predates the American Revolution, you’ll find  the Maryland State House . It’s the oldest state capital building in continuous legislative use and it briefly served as the U.S. capital, too.

Historic houses such as the  William Paca House  or  James Brice’s house  make history personal and relatable to kids. The  Annapolis Maritime Museum  is a surprisingly engaging rainy day activity.

It shouldn’t be surprising that the home of the  U.S. Naval Academy  would offer plenty of ways to  get out on the water .  Kayaking, SUPing, sailing, fishing and guided tour-boat rides are all easy to find. The area’s  state parks  offer walking trails and beaches for swimming.

Walking down Annapolis’s cobblestone streets past wood-frame buildings and brick rowhouses feels a bit like walking back in time. While you’re wandering around town, keep an eye out the  Old Fox Bookstore . This homey bookstore with a cafe, reading nooks and an adorable garden is a hidden gem.

Come lunch or dinner time, seafood lovers will find plenty to make them happy here. Head to  Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls  for several variations on this New England classic.  The Boatyard , a few minutes from the town center, has a casual dockside vibe. You can have local crab is cakes, chowder or dip as well as rockfish and local oysters. For American fare with a dash of history, visit the  Reynolds Tavern . Your kids will thank you for making a stop at  Uncle Bob’s Fudge Kitchen  (and you might be happy, too!).

Drive Time : 60-to-90 minutes

a bird's eye view of baltimore's inner harbor, a popular destination with weekend visitors, especiall those with kids.

My family loves Baltimore and we often combine a night here with a visit to the capital. It’s a bit more than an hour from Washington if traffic is good, but it has such a different look and vibe, that a night or two here can feel like a real getaway.

The brick rowhouses tell you you’re in a Northeast city that dates back to the colonies, but the local food has a distinct Southern accent. It’s not surprising the city’s denizens had very split loyalties during the Civil War.

There are enough museums that there is always one we haven’t seen yet or a favorite that’s added something new. The  Americann Visionary Art Museum , perhaps the most kid-friendly art museum I’ve been to, changes its main exhibits annually, so there really is always something fresh. You’ll know it by the shiny mosaic-tiled bus in front.

It’s hard to visit Baltimore and not just dig into a tray of Old-Bay-Seasoned  blue crabs  for dinner. But there is plenty of other good food, too from brewpubs to Italian and Southern fare. Take a walk around  Fells Point  and see what calls to you. The streets around the  Inner Harbor  have a good mix of local places, too, tucked in among the familiar chains.

Weekend Getaway to Delaware

Drive Time:  A bit more than two hours By Lance & Laura Longwell at TravelAddicts

the springtime lavender around the fountain pool at winterthure gardens in the brandywine valley.

One of the great weekend getaways from Washington DC, is the Brandywine Valley, a 20-mile section of Brandywine Creek that is designated as a scenic riverway. It winds its way from Chester County, Pennsylvania through northern Delaware and pours into the Christiana River in the city of  Wilmington, Delaware .

An important Revolutionary War battle was fought along the creek, givingng it a significant place in American History. But most visitors come to see the many DuPont family mansions, several of which are museums. The  Winterthur Museum & Garden , the  Hagley Museum , and the  Mt. Cuba Center  enchant visitors with their beautiful homes with lush, sprawling formal gardens.

However, the crown jewel is the majestic  Longwood Gardens . These gardens are part of massive 1,000- acre estate that was home to Pierre du Pont. The gardens have plants that bloom throughout the seasons so there’s always something spectacular to see. The highlight at any time of year are two fountains that have nearly 2,500 jets of water synchronized to music. You can spend a full day wandering the gardens and Conservatory and still not see everything.

When you add in the cute B&Bs, excellent restaurants, a state park, and a scenic railroad young kids will love, there’s no shortage of activities to fill a weekend.

The Best Fall Getaways for Families

emholk / Getty Images

The kids may be back in school, but there are still plenty of opportunities to carve out some fun quality family time. Fall offers a slew of fantastic options for family getaways, from colorful autumn leaf-peeping drives to holiday weekend escapes and Halloween fright nights.

As the weather cools in September, October, and November, your family will be happy to get out and explore.

Make the Most of Long Holiday Weekends

Tetra Images / Getty Images

In the fall, there are several long holiday weekends when the kids are out of school. The long weekends around the second Monday in October, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving provide great opportunities to score some much-deserved time away with your family. Choose a family-friendly resort, plan a mini road trip to explore the countryside or head to a big city for some museum hopping.

Holidays have great significance, but sometimes we forget the reason these days were set aside as special days. To help your children understand the significance of holidays, you can do a bit of educating while getting out and having fun.

Turn Veterans Day, for example, into a learning experience for kids, highlighting the sacrifices of the servicemen and women who fought and died for us by visiting military monuments and historic sites. Seattle, for example, has a number of memorials and monuments that are worth visiting. And, of course, Washington D.C. is full of places to go to honor service men and women. Take in Arlington National Cemetery and the powerful Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

If you live in or near the southern states, how about a day in Charleston, South Carolina, visiting the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, where kids can actually step aboard retired military ships like the famed WWII aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown. Spend a second day discovering the history and charm of old town Charleston, founded in 1670, and you have a special getaway for everyone in the family.

Another educational option would be to visit a Civil War memorial, like the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, where nearly 9,000 soldiers died as Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy. The battle inspired President Abraham Lincoln's great Gettysburg Address four months later in November 1863, in which he reaffirmed the principles of equality espoused by the US Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Take a Colorful Fall Foliage Drive

Michael H Spivak / Getty Images

Has your family discovered the joy of  leaf-peeping ? Nothing makes you appreciate the glory of autumn like a road trip to view fall foliage. From New England to the aspen groves of the West, the landscape changes from green to brilliant coppers, reds, and yellows every fall. It is a sight that children and adults should see at least once in their lives.

There are Internet resources that will help you decide where to see the colors at their boldest. The  Smoky Mountain National Park provides a fall foliage prediction map for the entire nation indicating which areas are at their peak over a two-week period. A key clarifies where each foliage-heavy area is in the color-changing process. Weather.com does fall foliage maps every day, indicating which areas are at peak or near peak on that day.

When you get to the woods or forests, make good use of viewpoints and short hikes to stretch everyone's legs. There's nothing quite like hiking through the woods in fall and, as the wind stirs the branches of the trees, having a shower of colorful leaves fall on you.

Get Away With Your Preschooler

Westend61 / Getty Images

For families with  preschoolers , the back-to-school season may be the best time of year to grab a getaway at a top family resort. Why? Because prices tumble then and resorts shift their focus to younger kids who are not in school.

Go for an extended weekend to Barcelo Aruba, a resort that has many amenities designed for families and small children like direct access to one of the best beaches on the island—Palm Beach, nanny services, a huge kids club with an outdoor playground, dining options, and evening entertainment with live music.

Alternatively, you may not have to go far for with your little ones. A trip to the countryside in fall will provide the family with picture-perfect experiences. Take a family hayride on a pumpkin farm that ends with big cups of hot chocolate. Stay overnight at a B&B and go see an apple cider pressing the next morning. You'll return home laden with pumpkins, baskets of apples, gallons of apple cider, and maybe a homemade pie or two.

Find Family-Friendly Deals

Deb Perry / Getty Images

The fall season, when business slows down at resorts and hotels, is a great time to score an affordable getaway. TripAdvisor.com calls Traverse City, in northern Michigan, one of the top 10 places in the country to see beautiful fall foliage. Ohio's state park lodges offer resort-like amenities in a lush wooded setting including family sports from hiking to geocaching.

In September, stay at some of Orlando Florida's famed resorts while the weather is still great but there are deals to be had and fewer visitors crowding the beaches. October is on the cusp of the off-season for San Diego resorts and attractions, which means they're offering good prices.

There's still plenty of sun in Florida and fun for everyone in the family. Visiting  Jacksonville  in November is easy on the pocketbook since the city offers a whole month of free admissions for children at some of its most popular family attractions.

Get Lost in an Amazing Corn Maze

James Worrell / Getty Images

All over the country, giant corn mazes are cropping up to the delight of families who flock to this quintessential fall experience. Wear comfy shoes or boots and bring your sense of adventure. And make sure to wear something bright so that someone can find you if you get lost.

There are mazes in practically every state. Seen from the air, many are amazing sculptural feats forming intricate designs like giant dinosaurs or Halloween pumpkins. If you don't have a corn maze close to home, you can choose from the 10 most amazing  corn mazes  in the United States to explore with kids.

Plan an Autumn Weekend in the City

ArtBox Images RM / Getty Images

Fall can be an ideal time to visit a major metropolis like New York City when temperatures are mild and the city is filled with fun activities, including  those that are free . You'll find walking tours, cultural events like hands-on museum exhibits for kids, intriguing toy stores, and fantastic Broadway shows for the whole family.

To keep accommodation costs down, consider renting an apartment for a few days. You'll save by choosing something just outside Manhattan in a less expensive, family-friendly area like Astoria in Queens or just across the Hudson River in Jersey City, New Jersey; both have frequent, direct subway service into Manhattan. Plus, you'll be able to do your own cooking and find places that can accommodate a big family at a decent price.

In  San Francisco , it actually warms up in the fall. You can ride the iconic Cable Cars, play with science at The Exploratorium at Pier 15 on the waterfront, walk out onto the Golden Gate Bridge. Kids love the Alcatraz boat tours where they ride across the bay to Alcatraz Island and tour the abandoned prison.

Find Spooky Fun During Halloween Season

Arman Zhenikeyev / Getty Images

Halloween is no longer just one day of the year. Now there's an entire season built around the spooky holiday, with destinations, theme parks, zoos, aquariums, resorts, and even cruise lines rolling out the orange-and-black carpet for families.

Cities and towns around the country are welcoming haunted houses, scary walks through decorated parks, boo zoos, and more to celebrate the season. These are open for days or weeks, and they are so popular they sometimes sell out way before opening day.

It can be a fun time to visit Philadelphia , for instance, during the Halloween Season as the city goes all out to celebrate.

In the Southwest, in states like Texas and parts of Arizona, the Hispanic holiday, Day of the Dead is celebrated with colorful altars, decorations on gravesites and special sweets and pastries. At the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden, early November is time for their family-friendly celebration with music and dance performances, crafts, face painting, and a  Mercado  filled with handcrafted art, jewelry, and other wares. In Tucson, Arizona, the early November All Souls Procession brings out costumed, painted-face folk art characters in droves. It's fun to watch or participate.

Join in at a Fall Renaissance Fair

Nicholas Lamontanaro / Getty Images

Fall is a great time for festivals. Among the festivals are Renaissance fairs, the largest being in Houston, Texas, which have become very popular over the past couple of decades. The fairs enable anyone to slip into life in a different era and have fun doing it.

As with most of the Renaissance fairs around the country, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire in Manheim, Pennsylvania, will get you into the period mood with a full complement of jousts, tournaments, heroes, damsels, royal folk, and live entertainment on the grounds of Mount Hope Estate and Winery.

There are Renaissance fairs in most states, although they take place year 'round.

Feast Your Eyes on the Northern Lights

Rudy Malmquist / Getty Images

There's no need to go as far as Iceland to see the Northern Lights . There are places in the United States where some of the most amazing Aurora Borealis sightings happen. In the Great Lakes region every year, typically from fall to spring, when the conditions are right, you can see the Northern Lights.

The Northern Lights, also called the  Aurora Borealis  or the "polar aurora," occur when large numbers of electrons originating from the sun stream toward the Earth along its magnetic field and collide with air particles. The air then lights up like a fluorescent light tube about 60 miles above the earth's surface. The resulting colors of the Northern Lights reflect gases found up there.

There are several places in the Great Lakes region to see this brilliant phenomenon, but one of the best vantage points is in Cook County, on the northeastern tip of Minnesota. Lie back and watch purple and neon green light up the sky from late autumn to early spring.

Sightings are likewise common in the spring and fall on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, one of the northernmost parts of the continental U.S. Locals say they can even see the glowing lights from their yards. The best places to see the Aurora Borealis in Michigan are Marquette or Michigan's northernmost Keweenaw Peninsula.

The northernmost region of Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Superior is a wonderful place to watch the Aurora Borealis in the fall and late spring. On a clear night, the lights reflect off Lake Superior, the largest expanse of freshwater in the world, creating a spectacular display.

Recreation.gov lists additional places to go to see the lights including Idaho. There have been rare sightings in Oregon and Washington as well.

Taste Your Way Through Harvest Festivals

Courtesy of High Hill Ranch

In Fall, especially, there are opportunities to expose your children to the seasonality of foods. It's harvest time. Anywhere there are apple orchards, look for U-pick experiences. Often farmers will be making fresh apple cider, a great fall treat. In California fall is time to head for  Apple Hill , just a short drive from Sacramento, the capital. There are special events for children and plenty of tasting to be done. Take home a bushel of apples and a freshly baked apple pie after your day in the orchards.

In most areas, the farm stands are still full of produce with wonderful apples, corn, squash, and other hardy vegetables and fruits. You may even find a place to get a great deal on your pumpkins for Halloween.

In New England,  fall festivals  and harvest events abound. And the harvest doesn't have to be from the bounty of the land. An annual tradition during the second weekend of October is the Mystic Seaport Chowder Days Festival, held at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut. Taste some chowder and enjoy this living history museum that preserves and celebrates America's seafaring heritage.

The charm of Kentucky hotels is something special, and I’ve experienced the best of what they have to offer.

My stay at Hotel Covington was like stepping back in time.

The vintage vibe, mixed with modern comfort, felt just right for a relaxing family getaway.

Now, if you’re more into arts and culture, the 21c Museum Hotel is your spot.

We enjoyed contemporary art all around us, turning a simple weekend stay into an art exploration!

My kids couldn’t stop talking about it.

But The Brown Hotel has its own appeal.

That classic elegance, coupled with their world-famous Hot Brown sandwich, was something I’ll never forget.

Compared to the others, it had a touch of old-school glamor that made me feel right at home.

Each place offers something unique, so it really depends on what you and your family are into.

How I Picked The Destinations

Choosing these destinations was no accident.

I’ve not only experienced them firsthand but also chatted with fellow locals and seasoned travelers.

I dug into the nitty-gritty, listened to fellow vacationers, and researched what makes each spot shine.

These gems were picked with love, insight, and a good dose of local know-how.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

Or, maybe you want to dig into a unique and delicious food scene, learn a bit of American history, or engross yourself in a walkable area and leave driving behind for your whole weekend trip?

No matter what you like to do, there’s an American city (or six) for that.

Here are 15 of the best cities for weekend getaways in the USA.

New Orleans

It’s often said that there’s nowhere like New Orleans–and that is completely true.

Spending a weekend in New Orleans ( or even a single day ) means lots of jazz, lots of delicious food (gumbo, beignets, po’ boys, muffulettas, and more–oh my!), and lots of good times.

Be sure to make time for a ghost tour to take a look at the more mystical part of the city (even if you’re not the superstitious type, I promise a ghost tour is worth it in NOLA!), and a bayou tour to check out southern Louisiana’s incredible landscape.

And, while it’s easy to have nothing but good times in New Orleans, you can (and arguably should) add more depth to your trip as well: consider a day trip out to somewhere like the Whitney Plantation to learn a bit about NOLA’s dark past, or even a Katrina-themed tour discussing the serious impacts of the 2005 hurricane.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

  • Best Western Plus French Quarter Landmark Hotel : The hotel itself is beautiful in that classic New Orleans way, and the (included) breakfast is varied and tasty. Best of all, this hotel is situated right on the edge of the French Quarter, meaning that all of the French Quarter and some areas beyond are within easy walking distance.
  • Omni Royal Orleans Hotel : Located in the heart of the French Quarter, this beautiful hotel is known for its gorgeous building, attentive service, and lovely ambiance–plus its ghosts. Yeah, that attentive service? It just may come in the form of the ghost maid who likes to tuck guests in at night!

Romantic Getaways in USA: Jackson Square New Orleans

If you’re hoping to soak up some fun in the sun during your USA weekend getaway, look no further than Miami.

South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree!

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though: be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning a trip out to the Everglades–or if you have a few extra days, road-tripping your way all the way to Key West , the southernmost point in the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

  • Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
  • The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Dripping with Spanish moss and home to one of the most stunningly beautiful historic centers of any city in the United States, Savannah is the perfect place to head for a weekend trip : not too big, not too small, and positively packed with some of the best southern food you could ever hope to find.

Come here to wander through all 22 of Savannah’s remaining town squares, tour a house museum or two, pay a visit to Forsyth Park, and to wander along gorgeous Jones Street.

Shoppers will love all the boutiques on Broughton Street, River Street, and in City Market, and those looking to indulge their taste buds will find limitless incredible food in Savannah , from classic southern meals at the Olde Pink House to tasty ice cream at Leopold’s.

If you’re a former Girl Scout like me, or just interested in their history, be sure to also pay a visit to the home of the organization’s founder, Juliette Gordon Low.

Where to Stay in Savannah

  • The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
  • Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

The Best Things to Do in Savannah: Fountain in Square

Of all of the weekend getaways in the USA covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate, plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well, and there are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting.

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors. Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States, it’s a sight not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

  • Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
  • The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Home to country music, hot chicken, street art, and plenty of barbecue, there’s no doubt that Nashville, Tennessee is an excellent place to let the good times roll on your weekend away.

While Nashville is extremely popular as a bachelorette party destination and for other girls’ getaways, large groups are far from the only types of travelers who will enjoy a weekend in Music City, USA.

The best places to visit in Nashville include visiting the Grand Ole Opry (both for the show and for the backstage tour!), checking out the Johnny Cash Museum, seeing the Country Music Hall of Fame, and exploring Gulch, the street art neighborhood home to, among many other things, the #instagramfamous Nashville wings.

Be sure to save some time to enjoy the city’s famous nightlife when exploring the best things to do in Nashville . Its tasty food is also an important ingredient on any Nashville bucket list –be sure to try the hot chicken at least once, but be aware of your heat tolerance before ordering!

Where to Stay in Nashville

  • Hutton Hotel: Book into this stylish hotel for your romantic trip, relax on the hotel balcony, or stroll 10 minutes to Music Row.
  • Virgin Hotels: Part of the Virgin Group and with all the luxury details you might expect, with plenty of red and white details.

Located just a couple of hours north of Savannah, Charleston shares a lot of similarities with its neighbor to the south: fantastic southern food, Spanish moss dripping from the trees, beautiful architecture, lots of history to uncover–but it absolutely has its own distinct personality as well.

Be sure to visit the beautiful and photogenic Rainbow Row, check out the tea-making process at the Charleston Tea Plantation, visit the gorgeous and interesting Angel Oak Tree, stroll through Waterfront Park and Battery Park, and check out City Market.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there and Fort Sumter for its history (and views).

Even for non-military-history buffs like us, these sights can still be an interesting way to spend some time!

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

  • Market Pavillion Hotel : This hotel is a stunning choice in the heart of the historical district. Rooms feature four poster beds and charming classic decor, but the hotel amenities are really special with a mosaic pool and even its own Executive Pastry Chef whipping up delicious pastries for breakfast.

You are welcomed with champagne on arrival, there is also a port wine and cheese reception and freshly baked cookies with milk are served every evening. The perfect treats for your trip! Rooms are vintage inspired and really beautiful. This is the loveliest spot in Charleston.

Set right on the water with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Rainier, it’s no wonder that busy and beautiful Seattle is one of the most popular west coast weekend getaways in the USA.

A weekend trip is the perfect amount of time to eat your way through Pike Place Market, head to the top of the Space Needle, visit the famous Chihuly Museum, and  check out the fun and interesting Museum of Pop Culture.

Looking for interesting neighborhoods? Head to Fremont, where the self-proclaimed unofficial motto is “des libertas quirkas”, aka “the freedom to be quirky”.

Hoping to spend some time outside? Nestled in the heart of the magnificent Pacific Northwest, endless waterfalls, trails, and mountains–even Mount Rainier itself–are located within day-tripping distance from Seattle.

Much like Austin, Portland proudly embraces its weirdness, celebrating the eclectic and bizarre in all possible ways–and that makes it endlessly fun to visit!

Bookworms like me will immediately head to Powell’s City of Books–I still think it’s the biggest bookstore I’ve ever visited–while foodies will want to head directly to the local ice cream obsession, Salt & Straw.

Voodoo Doughnuts, now with a few locations nationally, also originated here and remains popular with tourists (though depending on who you ask, not locals–for what it’s worth, we’d rate the doughnuts 7/10).

During your weekend trip to Portland, make time to visit the Japanese Garden and the International Rose Garden, especially if you visit when everything is in bloom.

Plenty of incredible parts of the Columbia River Gorge, including famous Multnomah Falls, are also within easy reach of Portland and deserve to feature on your list of things to do in Portland !

Where to Stay in Portland

  • Portland Regency Hotel & Spa : This historic hotel offers a hot tub, steam room, full-service spa, and other luxurious amenities that will truly make your vacation to Portland one to remember!
  • Portland Harbor Hotel: Located on Portland Waterfront is this luxury and stylish hotel. With beautifully designed rooms and a great restaurant, you are also well located to explore more of Portland.

Possibly the most iconic of all these weekend getaways in the USA, Las Vegas is a prime destination for short trips.

First-time visitors will certainly want to hit the Strip, even if only to check out the hotels, fountains, malls, and generally see what all the fuss is about–but there’s more to Vegas than the Strip (if you want there to be, that is).

Whether you want to hit the casinos to gamble and soak in some shows, check out Las Vega’s interesting (and far less touristed) downtown area, or get out and experience the fantastic natural highlights of the Southwest, Las Vegas has something to offer.

While the more-famous southern rim of the Grand Canyon is really too far away from Las Vegas to make a practical day trip, options like Valley of Fire State Park, Red Rock Canyon, and the Hoover Dam are all possibilities.

Where to Stay in Las Vegas

  • The Venetian: As one of the most iconic hotels on the Las Vegas strip this is a fabulous choice for your romantic trip. Everything about this resort is luxurious and huge, from the 1.2-acre pool deck to the in house shopping mall. Book a suite and feel like a real star.
  • Bellagio: Fans of the Ocean franchise will know this hotel and its fountains, although almost any Las Vegas fans know the fountain show of the Bellagio! Stay in this famous hotel for the ultimate treat.

San Francisco

The city of hills, ocean views, and the famous Golden Gate Bridge is at the top of many people’s lists of best USA weekend getaways–and with an endless list of things to do that cater to all interests, why not?

Be sure to pay a visit to the touristed highlights that most interest you–Fisherman’s Wharf (and its adorable sea lions!), Alcatraz, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the Painted Ladies (of Full House fame), and checking out Lombard Street.

Once you cross those highlights off your list, though, make time for a few less-obvious attractions, like San Francisco’s Japanese Garden, the Land’s End Labyrinth, and Fort Point.

And, of course, you can’t forget to go for a walk in the woods while visiting San Francisco: the Muir Woods are an unforgettable experience worthy of your time on any weekend trip to the area!

Where to Stay in San Francisco

  • Petit Auberge: This adorable hotel in Nob Hill is the perfect place to base yourself for a romantic trip. Styled like a French Auberge with cozy furnishings and fireplaces in the rooms, opening onto pretty terraces, the hotel also has private parking. Essential in the city.
  • Beacon Grand: Opened in 1928 as a hotel for the creators of San Francisco society and recently reopened after restoration preserving architectural details and artisan crafts. Stay in a stunning piece of history and feel like a star.

New York City

How much of New York can you see on just a USA weekend getaway? Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately.

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, whether you want to track down iconic spots, explore the best food in New York , see a show (or three), or discover offbeat NYC , you can find something to captivate you.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits, a weekend in New York is certainly long enough to see all those sights we’ve seen in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge–in a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just one (no more–too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
  • The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

4 Day New York Itinerary: Manhattan Skyline with Brooklyn Bridge

Incredibly beautiful and steeped in both American history and its own distinct, modern culture, Boston is one of those cities you visit for a weekend and fall in love with for a lifetime (we would know–we’ve been crazy about it ever since our brief 3-month stint of living there!).

While you’re there, be sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

Also consider strolling through the Boston Public Garden (one of our favorite spots in the city) and the Boston Common, visiting the penguins at New England Aquarium, meandering along the Freedom Trail, and hitting the water with a whale-watching cruise .

Bibliophiles like us shouldn’t miss the Boston Public Library (check out the Reading Room on the second floor!), nor Brattle Bookshop.

Sports fans, head directly to Fenway Park for a tour and/or a game.

Where to Stay in Boston

  • Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.
  • Revere Hotel Boston Common: Also in the Theatre District and close to Boston Common is this stylish hotel with a stunning rooftop terrace and bar, perfect for afternoon drinks. Rooms are spacious and have a coffee machine for those of you who need coffee the moment you wake up.

2 Days in Boston Itinerary: Beacon Hill

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip in the United States, and an incredibly popular stop for visitors from other countries who are planning a trip to the USA !

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC–everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, are available–far more than you can visit in a single weekend.

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, and those looking to enjoy the city’s magnificent food scene will love taking a DC food tour .

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that cherry blossom season in Washington DC is one of the best (and most popular) times to visit.

As a bonus, many of the things to do in Washington DC , including all of the Smithsonian museums, are free to enter.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

  • CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
  • Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

The self-proclaimed live music capital of the world, the home of the world-famous SXSW festival, and a city full of classic American charm with a country flair: when you’re looking for the best weekend getaways in the USA, it would be a shame to leave off the gem that is Austin, TX.

I have lived in Austin as both a child and an adult, and when I wasn’t living there, returned at least 1-2 times a year for most of my life due to family living in the area–and I never, ever get tired of visiting to tuck into a plate a delicious breakfast tacos, general TexMex, or barbecue.

During your weekend trip to Austin , head down to South Congress for fabulous food, eclectic boutiques, and incredible street art, and “Dirty Sixth” for some unforgettable nightlife (or alternatively, Rainey Street or Guadalupe Street for a different vibe).

Of course, this is the capital of Texas, so save some time during your weekend trip to Austin for some more typical cultural highlights, like visiting the Texas State Capitol and the historic (and possibly haunted) Driskill Hotel.

Plus, as Austin is surrounded by the stunning Texas Hill Country, no trip there is complete without going for at least one hike in Austin and taking a day trip to beloved nearby towns and wineries– Wimberley and Fredericksburg are both favorites.

Where to Stay in Austin

  • The Driskill: Originally built in 1886, The Driskill elegantly combines old-world charm with all of today’s modern luxuries. Dine at the award-winning on-site restaurant and enjoy the luxury of this iconic Austin landmark.
  • Hotel Saint Cecilia: This hotel set in pretty gardens is a great oasis in the city. There is an onsite pool with private bungalows, perfect for relaxing.

Visiting Chicago means it’s time for pizza, pizza, and more pizza… and okay, probably some sightseeing as well.

The sprawling city of Chicago, set right up against beautiful Lake Michigan, is certainly worthy of being included on any list of the best weekend getaways in the USA–and there are definitely plenty of fun things to do in Chicago to keep you busy while you’re there, including plenty of opportunities to explore the culture, enjoy delicious food, and even get outside in Chicago .

Come to Chicago for the weekend to snap selfies at The Bean, test your fear of heights on the famous Chicago Skydeck, pay a visit to Navy Pier, and of course, to eat a lot of deep dish.

Art lovers will find plenty of museums to devour in Chicago, including the incredible Art Institute of Chicago, and baseball fans will enjoy seeing the Cubs play a game at the famous Wrigley Field.

For animal lovers and family travelers, head directly to Shedd Aquarium (and for family travelers, make note of the American Girl Place as well–the highlight of my first visit to Chicago long, long ago!).

Where to Stay in Chicago

  • Warwick Allerton: Situated on the Magnificent Mile in Downtown Chicago, the hotel is perfect for shopping and discovering iconic architecture.
  • Staypineapple: This oddly named hotel was designed by a world renowned architect and features stylish details such as mosaic floors and marble ceilings. No detail is spared and rooms are a testament to the thought that has gone into each part of the hotel.

Safely, Detroit is not on your list. Detroit is a fabulous city and Michiganders are very friendly and likeable.

Austin is not the country music capital — it’s the live music capital.

Well isn’t that an embarrassing typo for someone who has owned a Keep Austin Weird shirt for 20 years! Lol. I’ll get it fixed.

Very interesting

Or Madison… both have their own unique quirks that can keep a weekend enjoyable

You forgot Richmond Virginia, which would probably run circles around half of these cities on your list.

Not even close Tony!

absolutely incorrect

Umm Philly????

Will go on the list when we expand it! We love Philly. 🙂

Boise is an awesome city in the west too!

Love what you do, just curious, how do you make ends meet?

How did Dallas not make the list

Cause it sucks.

Great ideas, thank you!

Personally, I absolutely loved San Antonio what a great little weekend get away!

We love it too–one of our former homes and one of our favorite places to eat in the country!

Family weekend getaways

Cooperstown, New York

1.  Cooperstown, New York

Travel time: 4hrs and 45min by car

Few sports inspire the kind of devotion baseball does, which is why the bucolic village of Cooperstown, home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum , is on the national map. Thanks to the museum’s artifacts collection, Hall of Plaques and the interactive Sandlot  section, youngsters will no doubt leave knowing more about the sport and its players than when they arrived. For a change of pace, head to the nearby Farmers’ Museum , a multifaceted paean to rural 19th-century America with a working farmstead and children’s barnyard. At some point, strike a deal with the kids: First you’re going to the  Ommegang Brewery  for a tour and tasting (or lunch at its café), and afterward you’ll stop by  Barnyard Swing Miniature Golf  for a round of summery fun.

STAY : The outdoor heated pool and fire pit make the August Lodge Cooperstown  an obvious choice for families.

Mystic, Connecticut

2.  Mystic, Connecticut

Travel time: 3hrs and 40min by car

Awaiting the maritime-obsessed is the tremendous  Mystic Seaport , a 19-acre living history attraction where families can explore a re-created 19th-century village filled with “working” shops (an oyster house, a ship carver), an authentic whaling ship, and more. Luckily for kids, the town’s also home to the  Mystic Aquarium , home to thousands of species of marine animals (including the largest outdoor beluga whale exhibit in the country).   Don’t forget to check out the Mystic Bridge Historic district, where great architecture, shops, and ice cream parlors await. There's plenty of seafood options for older members of the brood, but the youngsters might prefer dinner at  Mango's Wood-Fired Pizza Co . STAY:  The lovely Whaler’s Inn is situated near all the town’s attractions and offers guests a $15 daily food credit to the hotel's restaurant.

Bucks County, PA

3.  Bucks County, PA

Travel time: 2 hrs by car

Drive a mere two hours away from NYC and you'll feel like you're in another world. Located in Bucks County, New Hope boasts a quaint, country atmosphere with shops, attractions, restaurants and annual community festivals. You'll want to take in a show at Bucks County Playhouse and bring the kids to  Bucks County Children's Museum , which features a digging station, a hot air balloon VR experience and a mini town square that transports little visitors to the turn of the century with a cute general store, ice cream shop and other amenities. For the little locomotive fans in your life, hop aboard the  New Hope & Ivyland Railroad  for a glimpse at the bucolic scenery. Don't forget to visit during the holidays, as both Easter Bunny Tours and the North Pole Express are available for families. Venture to the historic  Peddler's Village  for shopping and dining. Seven full-service restaurants allow families to pick and choose selections that work for them (American classics, cafe brunches and more options are available). One thing's for certain, no trip to the sweet destination is complete without an equally sweet scoop of ice cream from Nina's! If you're looking for an amusement park environment, Sesame Place is certainly the way to go. Make sure to give Elmo, Big Bird and the rest of the crew our regards.   STAY: Outdoorsy types can pitch a tent at the  Colonial Woods Family Camping Resort .

Washington, D.C.

4.  Washington, D.C.

Travel time: 4hrs and 20min by car

The country's capital has plenty to keep visitors entertained, whether they're curious about U.S. history, politics, exploration and so on. After catching a glimpse at all of the monuments, there are plenty of museums and attractions at visitors' disposal: the International Spy Museum , Newseum , the United States Botanic Garden ,   and much more (so bring comfortable walking shoes). Of course, no visit to Washington, D.C. would be complete without checking in on the characters at the National Zoo . After covering so much territory, the kids are bound to get hungry, so check out some of the city's best family-friendly restaurants , from locations at the National Mall to museum cafés, sit-down restaurants, and everything in between. Options abound at Union Market  where even the pickiest of eaters can find something to satisfy their taste buds.

STAY:  The ideally-located  JW Marriott Washington D.C.   has an outdoor pool—perfect for the kids after a day of sightseeing.

Montauk, New York

5.  Montauk, New York

Travel time:   3hrs and 45min by car

Although millennials continue to flock to this Long Island destination, there are plenty of reasons for families to take notice, too. Parents and kids can keep busy with a variety of options: Climb to the top of the Montauk Lighthouse —a national landmark—stop by Puff 'N' Putt not only for a game of mini-golf, but boating and kayaking, pick up a nautical-themed souvenir at  Captain Kid Toys , hit the waves during fun  surfing lessons  and, of course, spend time getting sand between your toes at one of the town's great  beaches . Seafood options abound, naturally, and you'd be remiss not to have at least one meal at Gosman's —it's essentially an unwritten requirement.

STAY:  The cozy Ocean Resort Inn ,  situated right on the Atlantic, is just a short walk from downtown

Hershey, PA

6.  Hershey, PA

Travel time: 3hrs by car

They say Hershey is the sweetest place on earth, and we're not here to argue with obvious facts. Let the kids pretend they're Willy Wonka for a few days with a short visit to this Pennsylvania family hotspot. Everyone in your brood with a sweet tooth (even the adults) will have a stellar time visiting Hershey's Chocolate World , which features tastings, tours, and even a "create your own candy bar" experience (a.k.a. every kid's dream). Make sure to stop by well before (or after) your visit to Hershey Park,  home to roller coasters and a water park (Mom and Dad: If you have some down time, you'll be pleased to know that there are  shopping, golfing and spa appointments waiting for you!).

STAY: At the Hershey Lodge , kids get their own special check-in (offered seasonally), and can play a Hershey’s candy guessing game to receive a personalized lanyard and chocolatey treat—sounds like a no-brainer!

7.  Finger Lakes, New York

Travel time: 4 to 5 hrs by car

Home to eleven iconic lakes, New York’s Finger Lakes region is the perfect escape for swimming, paddleboarding, chasing waterfalls, and pretty much every kid-friendly activity you can imagine. Think of the region as a destination of scenic road trips: Spread across 9,000 square miles, charming towns pop up around each lake, meaning that you can spend a whole weekend hopping from one to the next (tip: if you arrive in time for fall foliage, the drive alone will keep the little ones in awe). Head to Watkins Glen State Park , just south of Seneca Lake, where easy trails lead toward the dramatic Cavern Cascade. In the tiny town of Corning, the Corning Museum of Glass is surprisingly kid-friendly with live glass blowing demonstrations and even a Make Your Own Glass experience (fear not: it’s safe for all ages). Looking for a sweet pit-stop? Ithaca’s Purity Ice Cream is a no-brainer: it operates out of an ice cream shop that opened back in 1936, meaning you’ll get old-school scoops made with milk from upstate farms.

STAY: Set right along the shores of Seneca Lake, the  Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel  offers affordable rates with a view the kids will love.

Narragansett, Rhode Island

8.  Narragansett, Rhode Island

Travel time: 4 hrs by car

Rhode Island's popular seaside town is a go-to for all vacationers on the east coast looking to hit the beach—or three, to be exact. Bring surfboards and boogie boards to the well-known Scarborough State Beach (note that these waves are probably more suitable for the older kids in your clan) and venture to the less intense Roger Wheeler State Beach with tiny tots who will gravitate toward the playground and the calmer waters. Salty Brine State Beach has gentler waters, too. Naturally, no beach town would be complete without a lighthouse. Although Point Judith doesn't welcome visitors inside, families are able to head to the grounds and take scenic photos off the coast. When hunger strikes, adults will opt for seafood dishes (including amazing lobster rolls) and seaside views at Coast Guard House but those craving comfort food will find something desirable at Eddie's BBQ. Regardless of what's on the menu, all suppers should conclude with a visit to the nearby ice cream shop, Brickley's .

Stay: The family-run Anchor Motel , located right across from Scarborough Beach

Annapolis, MD

9.  Annapolis, MD

Travel time: 4hrs by car

There’s plenty for all ages in Annapolis, where the historic downtown is gorgeous (cobblestone streets) and features a mix of traditional bed and breakfasts, shopping, and beautiful landmarks like the U.S. Naval Academy. Hit up the   Naval Academy Museum   and   Jean-Paul Jones’ Crypt   for a dose of history, then visit the   Annapolis Maritime Museum   to learn about aquatic life and Annapolis’ role in the oyster industry. There’s also a newly refurbished   downtown dock   that’s always filled with impressive boats.

STAY:   The   Holiday Inn Express & Suites   is close to downtown and sits at a little over $100 per night. There’s also a complimentary breakfast!

Long Beach, NY

10.  Long Beach, NY

Travel time: 2hrs and 10min by car

Those that spend these family weekend getaways at this “City by the Sea” won’t regret it. There are a ton of fun   parades and festivals   throughout the summer, plus plenty of local   parks and playgrounds  where kids can make the most out of the warm weather . Plus, the boardwalk is perfect for a few family photos! Be warned: The beach does have a $15 fee per person for non-pass holders. Kids will want to refuel with lunch and a rainbow-colored shake at the Diner by the Sea,  and we can't blame them!

STAY:   To keep things cost-effective, the Best Western Mill River Manor  will run about $140 per room—luckily, there's an outdoor pool!

Ocean City

11.  Ocean City

Travel time: 4 hrs 30 min by car

This seashore town—located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Isle of Wight Bay— boasts white sand beaches and plenty of places to romp and play. Stroll along the boardwalk a long list of food options when your stomach starts to rumble. Pop into Ropewalk for a family-friendly seafood feast. For other kinds of fun, take a break with a ride on one of the 45 hand-carved animals on the historic Trimper’s carousel or cater to your inner thrill-seeker with a trip to Jolly Roger’s Splash Mountain Water Park .

Stay: Spend your nights at  Carousel Oceanfront Hotel & Condos , which features a kiddie pool, bounce house, game room and a pirate ship jungle gym.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

12.  Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Travel time: 5hrs and 30min by car

If spectacular beaches, salty air, and delicious hole-in-the-wall seafood spots sound right up your alley, Cape Cod is one of those family getaways you can't miss. Its 22-mile path, the  Cape Cod Rail Trail , is perfect for those who love a scenic bike ride. Running along a former railroad track, it stretches from Dennis to the town of Wellfleet. Parking areas dot the paved railbed, so you can go as far as you'd like in either direction—and you'll even hit the beach along the way if you do a little advance planning. North of the Rail Trail, between Wellfleet and Provincetown, beach options expand. Families with young children might prefer sticking by the bayside where water is warmer and there’s no undertow, but oceanside strands like Head of the Meadow or Marconi—both part of the Cape Cod National Seashore —are breathtaking. So are the whales just beyond them, who arrive from warmer climes to feed in the area’s teeming waters from April through the end of October.  Whale Watch Dolphin Fleet ,   in Provincetown, offers great family excursions. Feast at Quicks Hole Tavern , where youngsters under 10 get to make selections from the kids' menu.  STAY:  Situated right on the Rail Trail, Midway Motel   has a secluded feel and hard-to-beat rates (often below $100 per room).

13.  Rocking Horse Ranch, Highland, NY

Travel time: 2 hrs 30 min by car

Get ready for an all-inclusive resort like no other. Rocking Horse Ranch pays homage to summer camp days with horseback riding, water sports and other fun outdoor activities for the whole family. Looking for performances? You’ll have it made with magic acts, ventriloquists and other fun offerings. When activities become too overwhelming (for parents), make sure to take advantage of spa treatments such as facials and massages.

Wildwood, NJ

14.  Wildwood, NJ

Phew: This Jersey Shore town is more family-friendly than MTV cameras led us to believe. Morey's Piers offers two parks for one price: Raging Waters and the Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club, a 10-minute walk or five-minute tram ride away. Those who want to remain on dry land can hit up carnival rides and other attractions at three amusement piers though combo tickets are available if your little ones can't decide. Indulge your seafood cravings at Crab & Seafood Shack , where kids 12 and under have their own menu with the typical fare: hot dogs, chicken fingers and more.

Stay: Book a room at El Coronado Resort and enjoy poolside barbecues, movies and live entertainment.

Crystal Springs Resort, Hamburg, NJ

15.  Crystal Springs Resort, Hamburg, NJ

Travel time: 1 hr 30 min by car

Sure, you want the kids to have fun on vacation...but getting a little adult r&rwould be pretty sweet, too. For a getaway that will sate the offspring yet also allow you a little self-indulgence, Crystal Springs Resort should do the trick. The very kid-friendly place is 90 minutes from New York, so you'll be pulling up to the sprawling grounds in no time. Seven indoor and outdoor pools allow for splash time no matter the weather. You, meanwhile, can kick back on a lounge chair with a cocktail from the poolside bar, or take turns watching the kids while one of you sneaks away for a massage in the on-site spa or a round of golf on the adjacent course. In the evening, head to The Glenwood for burgers, wraps or pizza, then hit the Warwick Drive-In for a first-run double feature. After breakfast the next morning at Kites, the resort's restaurant, kids will no doubt want more pool time. That will leave them refreshed for a hike along the Canal Road section of the Appalachian Trail before you head back to the city.

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

16.  Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Travel time: 7 hours by car

Okay, okay—this is one of those family weekend getaways that's a bit of a haul from NYC (but so worth it). Few venues compare to Omni Mount Washington Resort’s spectacular scenery. When it’s nice and warm, families can enjoy sweet activities such as horseback riding, hiking on local trails, rounds of tennis and other great offers like free scenic tours (via a ski lift!) and mountainside ATV tours. Come winter, a free shuttle will take visitors to the lauded Bretton Woods Ski Resort, just two minutes up the road. A boast-worthy bonus: Young visitors can experience the thrill of swimming outdoors amid a snow-covered landscape thanks to an outdoor pool that’s heated year-round. If the allure of Mt. Washington won’t let go, consider taking the Cog Railway  up rather than driving. You’ll have an hour to enjoy the stunning views, visit a museum and have a bite to eat before heading back down. STAY : The Omni Mount Washington Hotel is the crown jewel, but families can also choose the Lodge at  Bretton Woods .

Lehigh Valley, PA

17.  Lehigh Valley, PA

Travel time: 1 hr 40 mins by car

If the family can’t choose between thrilling amusement rides and swimming pools to beat the heat, then an itinerary centered on Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom will satisfy everyone. The older set will enjoy the twisting, turning dry and wet rollercoasters while little ones enjoy Peanuts-themed rides. Come nighttime, watch movies under the stars at Shankweiler's Drive-In Theatre .

Stay: Tuck in at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites for close access to the theme park.

Amherst & Williamstown, Massachusetts

18.  Amherst & Williamstown, Massachusetts

Travel time: 4hrs and 15min by car

The verdant Berkshires and neighboring Pioneer Valley in western Massachusetts are appealingly sleepy, but if you’ve got a gang of culture vultures, you’ll find it’s brimming with artistic gems, too. The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art  in Amherst, which opened in 2002, mounts regular shows spotlighting the art of picture books. The contemporary art scene is alive and well too thanks to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art , a world-class museum in North Adams inhabiting a cluster of converted, 19th-century brick factory buildings. The stunning museum mounts eclectic shows, one of which is designed especially for kids in a gallery-studio hybrid called Kidspace; children can drop in and make art there free of charge on weekends, and every day of the summer. While you’re in the area, pay a visit to Old Sturbridge Village ,  New England’s answer to Virginia’s Williamsburg. The outdoor museum recreates an early 19th-century town with authentic shops like blacksmiths and bakeries, complete with costumed thespians—er, interpreters—glowing fires and baking bread. Grab a bite of some kid-friendly dishes (think mac n' cheese and chicken fingers) at Bullard Tavern Cafeteria .

STAY:  Friendly owners and reasonable prices win at Maple Terrace Motel , right in Williamstown.

Baltimore, Maryland

19.  Baltimore, Maryland

Travel time: 3hrs and 40min by car

Though often bypassed by travelers on their way to D.C., the city of Baltimore has come into its own, especially given the renaissance of its Inner Harbor. Foremost, there’s the top-notch National Aquarium , a must-see for kids and adults alike . The   ocean-obsessed will come closer than ever to majestic marine life such as stingrays, a giant sea turtle, and blacktip reef sharks. At the B&O Railroad Museum ,  about a mile due west, kids (and maybe their parents) will learn that Baltimore is where the first commercial mile of railroad track in the U.S. was laid; they’ll also get to explore it via a 20-minute ride on an actual train, the  Mile One Express . Maritime lore lovers won’t want to miss the hour-long Urban Pirates Family Adventure ,  a swashbuckler-themed cruise in Baltimore Inner Harbor, where they can dress up like pirates, learn sea chanteys, and spray water cannons. Lexington Market offers something for everyone when lunchtime strikes, while Broadway Market is the latest smorgasbord, which recently opened in a market that dates back to 1786.

STAY:  Located in the original B&O headquarters, the Monaco Baltimore has large rooms and an extremely pet-friendly policy.

Gillette Castle, East Haddam, CT

20.  Gillette Castle, East Haddam, CT

A mansion tour isn't at the top of most children's must-do lists, but this isn't just another rich family's house: Among other novelties, you take both an antique train and a ferry to get here. Kids used to jam-packed subway cars will love settling into their comfortable seats on the Essex Steam Train for an hour-long trip through the Connecticut River Valley. Disembark and, after a brief walk, hop aboard the Chester/Hadlyme Ferry. As you approach landfall, keep an eye out for the medieval-style stone structure atop a hill—that's Gillette Castle , and it's just a short hike from the shore (though keep in mind it is not stroller-friendly). Once you're there, tour guides will take your crew through two dozen wood-and-stone–clad rooms. Built in the early 20th century by the then-famous actor and Sherlock Holmes portrayer William Gillette, the mansion is like a mystery-movie tableau where ghosts and evildoers might lurk at any turn. Gillette was also a stage manager who invented many trick props, and a bit of a prankster: He devised a series of mirrors to allow him to spy on visitors, and a hidden staircase so that he could sneak up on guests—or escape from them. Before or after your ferry ride, fill up at the Trackside Cafe, a converted dining car at the steam train depot.

Stay: Relax at the outdoor pool at the former Sandpiper Inn in Old Saybrook, now an Econo Lodge Inn and Suites .

21.  Lake Placid, NY

Travel time: 5 hours by car from NYC

Lake Placid is one of those family weekend getaways that provides an opportunity for visitors to catch their breath with hiking trails, rock climbing, fishing, and paddle boating. Kids will get a kick out of Big Z's Lake Placid Lanes . While you’re in the area, be sure to make a stop at High Falls Gorge for an amazing walk around four waterfalls. Afterward, share a thin and crispy pizza pie at Lisa G’s or have the kids select from their own menu .

STAY: Once the kids are tuckered out, head to your room at Cobble Mountain , where the range of cozy rooms and cabins host families of all sizes.

Why go? Downtown Louisville has lots to offer families from creative hotels and interactive museums, as well as dining and sports.

What to do: Get a lesson in baseball at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, where everyone takes home their own mini baseball bat and gets a firsthand look at how the bats are made. You definitely have to check out the famous Churchill Downs horse racing track, home of the Kentucky Derby, and the Kentucky Derby Museum. Other must-dos include the interactive Kentucky Science Center downtown, ziplining inside a cave at Louisville Mega Cavern and a chance to ride a real riverboat down the Ohio on the Belle of Louisville.

Where to stay: Stay amidst an art museum at the 21c Museum Hotel located in the heart of downtown. The hotel’s museum is open 24 hours a day for free with art installations intermingled throughout the property.

What to do: Explore many different activities in Centennial Olympic Park like the Georgia Aquarium. At the World of Coca-Cola, you can learn how Coca-Cola is made (but not the top secret recipe!) and sample cola drinks from all over the world. Kids will love splashing in the fountain of rings and you may want to go for a ride on the Skyview Atlanta Ferris wheel. Take a break for some gaming fun and dinner at nearby Game-X or try some of the city’s top barbecue at Twin Smokers.

Why go? San Antonio offers a variety of things to do from its lovely River Walk to history at the Alamo to the charming Hill Country of Texas.

What to do: Be sure to stroll the River Walk or ride a river barge through the 15-mile waterway. Encourage the kids to “remember the Alamo” with a visit to the Alamo and a lesson on its role in history. At Natural Bridge Caverns, you can explore underground caves and their impressive formations, or spend some time at SeaWorld & Aquatica San Antonio or Six Flags Fiesta Texas for some theme-park fun.

Where to stay: The Hotel Indigo San Antonio River Walk is a Spanish-style property with an outdoor pool, rooms with balconies overlooking the river and a fitness center.
