Niagara Falls in Winter: The Ultimate Guide (2024)

Categories Blog , Canada , City Guides , Niagara , Ontario , Travel Guides

Niagara Falls in winter is one of the best times to visit because you’ll be able to see a partially frozen Niagara Falls. It’s quite the sight to behold in the winter months, surrounded by snow and ice! There’s really nothing like it anywhere else in the world. While I love going to Niagara Falls in the fall , the winter is one of my favourite times of the year to visit.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada is home to one of the world’s greatest waterfalls. It is one of the most visited places in the world. People flock here to witness its majestic beauty by the millions. An estimated 22 million people visit Niagara Falls each year (including both the Canadian and American sides).

Niagara Falls Winter

As you can imagine, it can get very busy here, especially during the summer months. It’s incredible to visit Niagara Falls in the fall with less crowds. However, it’s such a unique experience to see Niagara blanketed with a layer of snow and ice. To escape the crowds and view Niagara Falls in a whole new light, why not consider visiting Niagara Falls in winter?

As Justin and I live about an hour’s drive from the Niagara region , we hardly consider visiting in the summertime. We’ve both been fortunate enough to visit the Falls on numerous occasions during the warm summer seasons with our families throughout the years.

While it’s spectacular in the summer, Niagara Falls is brilliant in all seasons. Thankfully, the off seasons are a little less hectic, especially during the winter. Is it cold? Yes, pack your parka . Is it worth braving the cold to visit? Of course! Niagara Falls is a spectacular dazzler in the winter.

Niagara Falls Winter: Seeing Niagara Falls Frozen

Niagara Falls in Winter Time - Viewing Niagara Falls covered in snow and ice

One of the main reasons to visit Niagara Falls in winter? You want to see Niagara Falls frozen! Frozen waterfalls are absolutely stunning and offer entirely different scenery in comparison to what they look like during the other seasons. Sections of the waterfall become frozen over. The chilling mist rises up above the Falls and surrounds you at times.

Layers of ice and snow bury the rushing water down below. Only small sections of the Niagara River are visible; you can still observe just how fast the water is flowing. Dense clumps of snow and ice cover the protective fences and barriers, feeling as hard as the concrete beneath them.

Trees and plants are completely frozen and cling to the rocky cliff edges. Seeing Niagara Falls in winter is nothing like visiting in the spring, summer, or fall.

Does Niagara Falls Ever Completely Freeze Over?

Don’t visit Niagara Falls in winter expecting to see the waterfall completely frozen. It gets pretty icy, but it doesn’t completely freeze over. According to Niagara Parks’ official records, the last time it froze over was in 1848 during extremely chilly temperatures and an accumulation of ice glaciers.

It completely stopped the flow of water, so Niagara Falls did freeze over. It hasn’t happened since, and don’t expect it to happen again anytime soon!

When to Visit Niagara Falls in Winter

Frozen Niagara Falls - The American Falls / US Falls in the winter

When is the best time to visit Niagara Falls in winter? If you want to see Niagara Falls frozen or partially frozen, make your way there after it’s been freezing cold for a while. After many days of frigid and freezing weather, Niagara Falls will begin to grow more frozen and icy.

I’ve heard that when it gets really cold that you’ll see huge chunks of ice floating over the waterfall itself. That is beyond cool!  See what I did there!

Niagara Falls in February

Visiting Niagara Falls in Winter: Frozen Niagara Falls

I’ve updated this article as we went to see Niagara Falls in February after experiencing a lot of freezing weather. As always, it was absolutely gorgeous. Niagara never disappoints. The American Falls were mostly frozen over, and the Horseshoe Falls was frozen down below.

Niagara Falls Winter - Canadian Falls in February January March

Clumps of snow and ice were everywhere and covering every surface: barriers, trees, plants, you name it. The water is powerful, as always, no matter the season. Visiting Niagara Falls in February is probably the best time of year to go if you want to see the falls under layers of snow and ice.

Niagara Falls in January

Niagara Falls in January

We’ve also visited Niagara Falls in January. One year in particular, we ventured down to see a winter Niagara Falls to witness the magic. We reached Niagara Falls in the afternoon, which is typically the busiest point of the day in the summer. Depending on how cold it gets, Niagara Falls can be pretty icy and magical in January, too.

Niagara Falls in January

However, there weren’t any crowds of people to battle for a prime viewing spot. Visiting Niagara Falls in winter is way less crowded, cheaper if you’re going to spend the night, and it’s far easier to find a parking spot in any parking lot (and far cheaper!).

As we walked down to the path that runs along the edge of Niagara Falls, we saw only a few people here and there. It was always easy to view Niagara Falls in winter from any location as we never had to wait for someone to move out of the way.

Niagara Falls in December

If you are looking to travel to Niagara Falls in the winter, it’s always a tossup as to whether or not there will be snow and ice in December. There are years where we’ll receive a dumping of snow in November and it lasts straight through the winter season. On other occasions, we don’t get much snow until January.

Visiting Niagara Falls in December can be really fun for the holiday and Christmas festivals. I’ll go into more detail about the OPG Winter Festival of Lights and Niagara Falls Christmas Market under the “festivals” heading of this blog post.

What to Wear in the Winter

Wear layers and warm clothing to Niagara Falls during the winter, especially January and February, the coldest months

Dress for the season, and that means dress warmly. And even more warmly than you think. The mist from the Falls makes it even colder. Definitely pack a warm winter coat , scarf , hat , and mittens/gloves . Layers are your friend.

During your walk along the Falls, you can always take a break and hop inside one of the shopping areas. That’s what we did when we got a little too cold. There are opportunities to get Tim Hortons coffee should you desire a hot beverage. After you’re finished gazing at the stunning waterfall from several places along the path, you might want to get back indoors for a while.

What to Do in Niagara Falls in Winter

Other than seeing the Falls themselves, you might be wondering what else you can do. Thankfully, Niagara Falls is always exciting and alive. There are always plenty of things to do in Niagara Falls in winter.

While some of the main Niagara Falls attractions close down in winter (Niagara City Cruises, White Water Walk, Hornblower Cruises aka Maid of the Mist and the Whirlpool Aero Car are all closed), there are so many attractions that remain open in all seasons.

Journey Behind the Falls

Journey Behind the Falls in Niagara Falls Canada

Journey Behind the Falls, a Niagara Parks attraction, remains open all year long. You’ll have an alternate perspective of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls on this adventure. Take a self-guided walking tour through 130 year old tunnels to experience the power of Niagara.

Journey Behind the Falls in Niagara Falls Canada

There are multiple cave entrances where you can see Niagara Falls plummeting down right before your eyes. The best part of Journey Behind the Falls is the observation deck at the end of the tunnel system. Standing right beside Niagara Falls is an experience like no other.

While I’ve only visited this attraction in the summer and fall before, I am certain that standing beside Niagara Falls in the winter would be absolutely incredible.

Niagara Parks Power Station

Niagara Parks Power Station - Niagara Falls in the Fall

The  Niagara Parks Power Station  is the newest attraction in the city, and you can enjoy different experiences by day and night. It’s open all year long, so you can even visit in the winter. Located on the Niagara Parkway, this Romanesque style architectural masterpiece is truly a sight to behold.

Niagara Parks Power Station

It was the first major power plant on the Canadian side of the Falls, and it opened in 1905. It’s also the longest operating power plant on the Niagara River, open from 1905 to 2006. Nowadays, you can visit this restored landmark attraction with immersive exhibits, unique artifacts, and lots of stories.

Niagara Parks Power Station

Learn about the inner workings of one of the most amazing power plants that harnessed the energy of the Horseshoe Falls and turned it into electricity. You can even experience an interactive control panel where you’ll learn how to harness electricity from water power for yourself. It’s one of the best indoor attractions to escape the cold weather.

The Tunnel at the Niagara Power Station

Want to see Niagara Falls in a way you’ve never experienced before, even if you travel to Niagara Falls regularly? The Tunnel at the Niagara Parks Power Station is a long awaited attraction that’s open at last.

Descend 180 feet below the Niagara Parks Power Station to experience the 2200 foot long tunnel and a new underground perspective of the Falls. And it’s open all year round!

Learn about the history of hydroelectricity in Niagara, plus enjoy never before seen views of Niagara Falls from the viewing platform at the end of the tunnel. Get your tickets to the  Tower and Tailrace Tunnel Tour  for two fun attractions in one.

Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory

Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory in the winter

A trip to the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory is a great way to warm up on a cold winter day. It’s a tropical climate inside, and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful, colorful butterflies fluttering all around.

Take a wander around this gorgeous indoor garden full of lush greenery everywhere you look. Take photos of various species of butterflies as they land on plants or maybe even on you if you’re lucky (it’s good luck to have a butterfly land on you!).

Fallsview Casino

Fallsview Casino

Another fun indoor activity in Niagara Falls in winter is Fallsview Casino . Why not try your luck at the slots of the tables? While Justin and I aren’t frequent casino goers, we will go maybe once or twice a year for a couple of hours (until we lose our money!).

While the slot machines are always tempting, Justin and I really like the electronic roulette machines that are situated around an actual roulette wheel.

Fountain at Fallsview Casino

In the lobby of the casino, there’s this funky looking fountain that lights up all different colors. Many people were taking their photos in front of it, and we followed suit.

Margaritaville Niagara Falls

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Niagara Falls

After you’re done spending your hard-earned dollars at the casino, why not pretend that you’re at a tropical destination? We walked across the street to Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Niagara Falls for some drinks. I know that you might not want to think about drinking a frosty margarita on a cold day, but we were actually a bit thirsty after being indoors at the casino.

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

We went with our friend, Shannon, and we both got the same drink, the “Tropical Hurricane”. Wow, this drink was much stronger than I expected! It was still very fruity and tasty. Funny enough, this was my first time ever frequenting a Margaritaville, despite visiting numerous Caribbean islands.

While the bar wasn’t really busy, we still had a great time chatting among the four of us. Oh, and don’t worry, you’ll get to hear the Margaritaville song….several times. Searching for my lost shaker of salt…

Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower is open for business if you’d like to get an aerial view of Niagara Falls. It’s a revolving restaurant with non-stop gorgeous views out the window.

It isn’t cheap dining up there, but it’s all about the experience. You get admission to the observation deck included with your meal, as well as the fun glass elevator ride.

Clifton Hill

A trip to Niagara Falls isn’t complete without walking up and down Clifton Hill. There are so many amusements and attractions along Clifton Hill, like wax museums, arcades, and indoor mini golf. While some of the attractions are a little cheesy or tacky, it’s oddly charming.

The Niagara SkyWheel is open all year long and you won’t have to wait in any huge lineups. I recommend riding the Niagara SkyWheel at night when the Falls are all lit up.

For craft beer fans, check out Niagara Brewing Company on Clifton Hill. They have award winning beers, as well as local specialties, such as the ice wine beer. Open to the public since 2015, they’re serving up quality brews right in the heart of Niagara Falls, so be sure to stop by for a tasting or a pint.

Go Hiking in the Niagara Falls Area

Hiking the Bruce Trail

Why not escape the city and go for a winter hike in Niagara Falls? Just bring some winter hiking boots , bundle up, and hit the trails. You can go winter hiking at Niagara Glen , which is a super scenic spot near Niagara Falls. The Niagara Gorge is gorgeous in all seasons, and it’s truly a winter wonderland this time of year.

I also recommend exploring the Bruce Trail , which runs for 900km between Niagara and Tobermory , Ontario. You can start at Queenston Heights Park at the Southern Terminus Cairn . It’s the stone monument that signifies the very start of the Bruce Trail, and it’s right there in Niagara Falls.

Snowshoeing in Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for what to do in Niagara Falls in winter, you should try snowshoeing in the city. There are many self-guided snowshoe trails for all skill levels in Niagara Falls. Check out the snowshoe trails at the Whirlpool Golf Course all winter long.

Snowshoe rentals are available on site, or you can bring your own snowshoes and hit the trails with a low cost trail pass. A winter visit wouldn’t be complete without some outdoor activities!

Winter Festivals in Niagara Falls

Thinking about visiting Niagara Falls in winter? Why not time your trip for one of its winter festivals? There are lots of ways to celebrate winter in Niagara Falls, whether you’re viewing millions of twinkling lights or sipping a glass of Niagara’s famous ice wine.

Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls

The Niagara Winter Festival of Lights is an annual tradition with over 3 million lights on the Niagara Parkway, Dufferin Islands and Niagara Falls. There are one of a kind light displays that are interactive works of art.

There are also Christmas lights for the season, light displays in Canadian themes, and even the Falls themselves are illuminated. You can catch the Winter Festival of Lights at Queen Victoria Park. The Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse is bright and all lit up for the season, too.

This year, the OPG Winter Festival of Lights runs from November 12th, 2022 to February 20th, 2023. It runs for 101 nights in total, from the middle of November until the Family Day weekend. You can now see these beautiful lights right through until mid-February. There are so many things to do in Niagara Falls in winter, so make sure that you check out the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights.

Niagara Falls Christmas Market

Niagara Falls Christmas Market

The  Niagara Falls   Christmas Market  is located in downtown Niagara Falls, Ontario. It’s the largest Christmas market in the Niagara region. You’ll find 50 vendors specializing in handmade goods. They operate out of the traditional Christmas cabins we all love to see at Christmas markets in Canada.

There are also over 30 Christmas light displays, including interactive exhibits. The Niagara Santa Claus Parade kicks off the event in mid-November. Then, you can visit the market every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the middle of November to December.

Niagara Holiday Handmade Market

Looking for holiday gifts for that special someone? Check out the annual Niagara Holiday Handmade Market to browse beautiful handmade gifts that you won’t find anywhere else.

There are over 200 vendors, food trucks, wine, coffee, live music, and an art alley. The event runs every year at the end of November, and it’s not to be missed.

Niagara Falls for Christmas or New Year’s Eve

Niagara Falls is such a magical place to visit over the Christmas holiday or New Year’s Eve. The annual Santa Claus Parade is a lively event through the city streets in the middle of November. Then, there’s always an amazing New Year’s Eve concert event in Niagara Falls at Queen Victoria Park.

There are also fireworks and parties in the streets, and most of the attractions on Clifton Hill are open for business. If you’re going to visit Niagara Falls in December, I recommend checking out the New Year’s Eve celebrations if you love music and a great party. However, it will be very busy and crowded on NYE!

Niagara Icewine Festival

Throughout January, you’ll have the chance to attend the Niagara Icewine Festival to sample delicious sweet wine from the local wineries in Niagara on the Lake. Visit the Ice Wine Village (downtown Niagara on the Lake) to sample ice wine, view ice sculptures, go shopping, enjoy music, and taste culinary creations.

With an Insider’s Pass, you can try five ice wine samples and keep your souvenir glass. There are also several gala and dinner events surrounding the Niagara Icewine Festival throughout January and February. It’s the perfect place for a wine tasting in the winter.

Seeing More Frozen Waterfalls

Tiffany Falls Frozen

Niagara Falls also happens to be near the city of Hamilton, the waterfall capital of the world. If you’re still looking for more waterfalls to view in the winter, check out these five epic Hamilton waterfalls (though none are quite as massive as Niagara). This includes the brilliant Tiffany Falls .

Where To Stay in Niagara Falls

It is much cheaper during the winter to stay overnight at any hotels by the Falls. I highly recommend choosing a hotel with a view, especially considering that the waterfall is lit up at night.

  • Embassy Suites Fallsview : Enjoy a brilliant view of Niagara Falls and treat yourself to a luxurious experience. Read reviews from fellow travelers who have visited.
  • Marriott on the Falls : We stayed here for Justin’s birthday once and I can vouch that it was awesome. Read more hotel reviews by fellow travelers who have stayed.
  • Hilton Fallsview Hotel : Soak up the beauty of the Falls right from the comfort of your own hotel room. Here are many more reviews from visitors who have stayed.

Getting to Niagara Falls From Toronto

If you have access to a car, driving there on your own is the easiest way to reach Niagara Falls from Toronto. Need to rent a car? I recommend comparing car rental prices here to find the best rate. You can also check out the best things to do in Toronto in winter before heading down to the Falls.

If not, you can book a tour to Niagara Falls from Toronto that includes transportation, lunch, and some attraction tickets. It’s also possible to take the GO Train from Toronto to Niagara Falls on the weekends, even during the winter time now. However, you’ll have to be mindful of the train times as they only run during certain hours on the weekends.

Traveling from out of town, internationally, or overseas? There are lots of cheap flights to Niagara Falls, New York , and then you can quickly drive across the border to Canada. Take the Rainbow Bridge across to Canada.

Feel free to check out Niagara Falls on the US side and the Canadian side. When you’re over on the American side, you can visit Cave of the Winds, Goat Island, Niagara Falls State Park, and the Niagara Falls Observation Tower in Niagara Falls USA.

Alternatively, it might be easier to find flights to Toronto and then make your way down to Niagara Falls with the ways I suggested above. No matter where you’re coming from, don’t forget to get travel insurance before your trip. It might be a simple fall on the ice that can ruin your holiday, especially without the proper travel insurance.

Browse all of our travel photography in one place. There are also options to buy prints, gifts and more made from any of our pictures!

If you’re looking for what to do in Niagara Falls in winter, hopefully this Niagara Falls travel guide has given you lots of ideas! We highly suggest that you make the trip to see the Falls in the wintertime because it’s so beautiful, there are fewer crowds, it’s cheaper, and there are still lots of things to do in Niagara Falls.

Hi Lauren! Happy to find your blog and learn more about visiting in January 2024. Planning our 1 day to experience Niagara Falls (four adults) and wanted to run it by you. We are staying in Lundy's Lane area. Does it sound feasible to... Have late breakfast at Fallsview Restaurant; Walk a long the observation trail; Take the Journey Behind the Falls tour: Fallsview Casino and then dinner somewhere close. Anything you would suggest to make it better or add in? Not sure of the proximity/distance between of all these places and would love your insight!

Hi Christine! Those plans are totally feasible! If you have some extra time, you could walk around Clifton Hill - the attractions are pretty kitschy, if the Ferris wheel is your thing you could ride that all year round. I think you have the makings of a great day! Have fun!

Tuesday 28th of January 2020

Great post on visiting Niagara Falls in the winter.

We were lucky enough to visit Toronto for our 5th wedding anniversary a couple of years ago. This is in March so inevitable the Falls were frozen for our visit but we were so glad they were. The sun was the sky and the blue of the frozen water was so stunning. There was also no-one else around to get in the way of our photos!! Can't imagine visiting in the summer now.

The nearby town of Niagara on the Lake is also a stunning place to visit!

Thank you, Paul! I'm glad you got to experience the Falls in the winter when they were frozen. While it does look really pretty in the summer, there are lots of crowds - in the winter, you get it more to yourself! Niagara on the Lake is lovely, too. It also gets pretty busy in the summer, so it's good to enjoy that in the off season as well!

Winter in Niagara Falls: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

niagara falls winter trip

Niagara Falls is already magnificent when the water is flowing over the falls at 68 miles per hour, but seeing those same falls completely frozen over in the winter is something else entirely. If you can endure the frigid temperatures, winter is one of the best times to visit. The falls are especially stunning in the snow as the sunlight reflects off the long ice sheets that stretch across the width of falls and chunks of ice can sometimes be seen falling over the top if it gets really cold. You can also have this pristine beauty basically to yourself as the winter season tends to draw much smaller crowds than in the summer.

Niagara Falls Weather in Winter

Located on the Canadian-U.S. border, Niagara Falls can get very cold in the winter . Average temperatures typically range between highs of 28 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2 degrees Celsius) and lows of 14 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 10 degrees Celsius). It starts snowing in Niagara Falls in November and you may even catch a snowfall as late as April, however it typically snows the most toward the end of February. Before your trip, be sure to monitor the forecast for blizzards that may affect your travels.

Average Temperatures by Month

  • December: 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius)
  • January: 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 1 degree Celsius)
  • February: 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius)

The winter months are the windiest months, which can make the air in Niagara feel even colder, especially at night. In the winter you will have fewer daylight hours to enjoy outside, especially if you visit in December, but if you visit in January or later, you can expect the sun to set at approximately 5 p.m. or later. The full freezing of all three waterfalls is a rare event (the last record of it happening was in 1848) but a partial freeze happens almost every year as long as the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius).

What to Pack

Craig Kanalley

If you prefer to see Niagara Falls with as few tourists as possible, winter is the best time to go, but make sure you've packed well. Even though there are ways to bide your time indoors where it's warm and toasty, Niagara Falls is a primarily outdoor destination and low winter temperatures can feel even colder when combined with heavy winds and the mist coming off the falls.

In addition to your heavy sweaters, you should also pack some thermal layers and heavy socks. Accessories like gloves, scarves, and a good hat are also must-haves. The sidewalks along the falls can get very icy and be very dangerous, so bring a warm pair of snow boots that have a good grip. Because cold and wet is never a fun combination, make sure your winter coat is waterproof.

Winter Events in Niagra Falls

Heather Rhodes / Flickr

In the winter, Niagara Falls is simply ethereal. As you stand on the brink of this massive flow of water and ice, you can't help but feel like you're privy to something really special that most people don't get to see. It may not be as busy a time as summer, but there are still many events from holiday lights to wine festivals if you're looking for entertainment beyond the main attraction.

  • Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights : It may be cold out, but the fantastic light sculptures at this annual winter festival will be sure to warm up your soul. The festival typically runs from late November until the end of December and is free to walk or drive through.
  • New Year's Eve : During New Year's Eve, you'll find many people gathered in front of the waterfall at midnight for fireworks over the falls and there is typically a live concert that gets started around 9 p.m.
  • Niagara Grape & Wine Festival : The Niagara Falls region is famous for its ice wine, a dessert wine made from grapes that are frozen on the vine. You can taste-test its uniquely sweet flavor at the annual festival that usually runs in January.

Travel Tips

  • To increase your chances of seeing the falls partially frozen, you should plan your trip in late January or February when temperatures are typically at their lowest.
  • With a lot of mist and freezing temperatures, be careful walking around Niagara Falls in the winter and keep your eye out for black ice.
  • You'll be saving on the cost of accommodation by visiting in the winter, so consider splurging on a fun excursion like taking a helicopter tour of the falls to see the snowy landscape from a new angle.
  • Rooms with a view of the falls can cost a fortune during the high season, but in winter they are at their lowest and are easier to book.
  • Some tours don't run in the winter, but you can still enjoy the popular "Journey Behind the Falls" tour which will take you through the caves that sit behind the waterfall.

Niagara Falls in Winter: What to Do & Visiting Tips

Wondering what to do in Niagara Falls in winter? You’ve come to the right place.

As someone who lived in Niagara Falls, Canada for over 10 years and still frequently visits, winter is one of my favourite times to visit Niagara. Beautiful lights illuminate the Falls and the surrounding area adding colour and life. Ice buildup creates the illusion that the Falls have frozen over. Crowds are fewer and many attractions are still open. The winter holidays bring holiday cheer.

A winter trip to Niagara is a very different experience than the summer. While it can be chilly, it’s also magical to see Niagara Falls covered in snow. This guide will help you plan what to do, festivals to attend, and adventures to try this winter in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Is It a Good Idea to Visit Niagara Falls in Winter?

Winter is a great time to visit Niagara Falls , especially covered in snow and ice. While summer is the busy season at the Falls, winter offers a unique view of the Falls not available in the summer and without the flocks of other tourists.

Even in winter, this natural wonder never sleeps . The Falls keep flowing, so there are still plenty of things to do and experience during winter. Winter offers hotel deals, more parking spaces to choose from, and less waiting for the perfect view of the Falls. If you haven’t considered a winter getaway to Niagara, I suggest you reconsider.

How Does Niagara Falls Look in Winter?

Each year, Niagara Falls transforms into a winter landscape unlike anywhere else . Icicles form alongside the Falls, the snow covers the rocks at the base of the American and Horseshoe Falls, and frozen mist coats the tree branches. Covered in snow and ice, Niagara Falls becomes very picturesque in winter.

While it would be incredible to see the Falls frozen, the Falls do not freeze over in the winter (other than in 1848, due to extreme temperatures and ice glaciers cutting off the water flow).

Yes, Niagara Falls is open in winter – even in the coldest weather. It is the off-season for Niagara, but most attractions are still available; only activities on the water are closed.

Before you go, I suggest checking the schedule for any winter activity you wish to do in Niagara to ensure it’s open, but you can visit the Falls anytime.

16 Best Things to Do in Niagara Falls in Winter

Here are the best things to do in Niagara Falls in winter:

Winter Festival of Lights Niagara Falls

1. Visit the Winter Festival of Lights

One of the top things to do in Niagara during the winter season is to visit the Winter Festival of Lights (WFOL). Every year for 101 nights from mid-November to mid-February, 5 pm to midnight, the Niagara Parkway and Dufferin Island transform into a winter wonderland. For 40 years, the WFOL illuminates the city with over 3 million lights and 75+ displays as Canada’s largest free outdoor light festival.

The new tunnel as part of the Niagara Falls WFOL

Living in Niagara Falls for part of my childhood, the WFOL was an annual family event for us, and now I continue to visit the festival to share that experience with friends and loved ones. Bundle up and go for a walk along the route for an up-close experience, or drive your vehicle to stay warm and enjoy this popular self-guided winter light display.

Here is a downloadable map of the festival route for your convenience. Prefer a guided tour? Check out this WFOL guided walking tour.

Note: Many attractions offer special winter activities this year to honour 40 years of the WFOL, and I have included them in this guide as options for winter things to do in Niagara.

2. Get Up Close to the Falls at Journey Behind the Falls.

Discover Niagara’s winter chill from the outdoor viewing platform at Journey Behind the Falls . Get as close as possible to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, descending 125 ft into the Niagara Gorge to visit the upper outdoor observation deck and two viewing spots behind the falls. Hear the thunder of the Falls while you walk through the 130-year-old tunnel through its bedrock.

Journey Behind the Falls was the first Niagara attraction I ever did when I was a teenager. And while I did it during the summer, I would love to see it in winter. Get close to the Horseshoe Falls and see them covered in snow and ice.

Note: The lower outdoor observation deck is closed in winter due to icy buildup.

New years eve in Niagara

3. Attend Niagara’s New Year’s Eve Celebration

On December 31st, Niagara Falls throws an a New Year’s Eve concert in Queen Victoria Park. With the Falls as a backdrop, the free outdoor event is a fun way to ring in the new year and kiss the current one goodbye.

I took part in Niagara’s NYE 2013 featuring Serena Ryder, Sam Roberts, and Demi Lovato, and it was a memorable night. If you like the band lineup for the upcoming performance, I recommend checking out Niagara Falls’s New Year’s Eve concert.

Note: Whether the NYE concert will happen in 2022 is TBD, with restrictions since 2020 due to the pandemic.

Seeing the Horseshoe Falls illuminated is one of my favourite things to do in Niagara in winter

4. See Niagara Falls at Night

Every visit to Niagara in winter should include seeing the Falls illuminated at night. Every night from dusk until late, Niagara Falls fills with colour from dazzling multi-coloured light projections.

In 2016, LED lights replaced the previous lights, which now light up the American Falls and Horsehoe Falls with a wider array of colours and a more beautiful intensity. Walking by Niagara Falls in winter and seeing the lights illuminate the falling snow is magical; one of my favourite Niagara memories.

American Falls illuminated

Significant dates mark for custom colours of the Falls in support of charitable causes and holidays, including blue for Human Rights Day or pink and red for Valentine’s Day. This year, in addition to the regular nightly illumination, there is a special six-minute display during the 101-nights of Winter Festival of Lights happening at the top of the hour at 6 pm, 7 pm, and 8 pm.

5. Take a Helicopter Tour Above the Falls

Want something thrilling to do in Niagara this winter? View Niagara Falls from the sky during a helicopter tour. This exciting tour combines adventure and a stunning bird’s eye view of Niagara for an unforgettable experience. Fly over and past many Niagara attractions, including the Whirpool Rapids, Niagara River, Skylon Tower, American Falls, and Canadian Falls, during your flight.

Flights are available daily, and you can choose from daytime, or the new night Winter Lights and Flights Experience, in honour of the Winter Festival of Lights. A helicopter ride over the Falls is on my Niagara bucket list, and adventure lovers will want to add it to yours too.

Niagara Falls fireworks cruise

6. Hop Aboard the Niagara Fireworks Cruise

To celebrate 40 years of the Winter Festival of Lights, Niagara City Cruises has a special Falls Fireworks Cruise available. For weekends in November, hop aboard a Falls Fireworks Cruise to watch the fireworks from a unique point of view , get close to the illuminated Falls, and admire the starry winter skies.

The 40-minute cruise combines two attractions into one: the Niagara fireworks and a light mist version of the Voyage to the Falls. It’s a winter experience unlike any other in Niagara, and I hope they make it an annual event.

Falls fireworks cruise

We boarded the boat at night, cruised past the American Falls until reaching the Horseshow Falls, and then headed under the Rainbow Bridge where we enjoyed the fireworks show. It was an incredible experience, and while I rode the US Maid of the Mist in the summer, I was so happy I did the Canadian one in winter!

Tip: While they call it a light mist experience, the poncho they provide will not keep you fully dry as it doesn’t have arms, so plan to bring an extra hat, scarf and jacket to wear after the boat tour.

7. Zipline with Incredible Views of the Falls

Ready for more thrilling winter adventures in Niagara? Soar past the American Falls while ziplining into the Niagara Gorge towards the Horseshoe Falls for an experience like no other. This 60-90 minute hands-free, fully-guided ride is enjoyed by thrill-seekers and those who want to zipline for the first time. During the winter months, admire the beauty of the snow and ice wrapping the Falls as you fly through the sky.

While I’ve gone ziplining in Costa Rica , I have yet to try the Niagara Falls zip line and hope to soon. I have watched people zip line in Niagara; it looks like fun!

Niagara Falls Christmas Market shops

8. Niagara Falls Christmas Market

Start your holiday shopping or indulge in Christmas-themed treats at the Niagara Falls Christmas Market . From mid-November to mid-December, the market runs on weekends and offerings shopping from artisanal vendors, live entertainment, light displays, photo-ops, a skating rink, and more . Get into the Christmas spirit and warm up by the fire for a joyful holiday activity in downtown Niagara Falls. And if you are feeling extra festive, get your photos with Santa or the Grinch!

Niagara Falls Christmas Market swings

During my visit to the Niagara Falls Christmas Market, I had so much fun interacting with the light displays and photo-ops and riding the see-saws and swings. I went right when the market opened at 5 pm, and it was perfect; more people were starting to arrive by the time I was leaving.

9. Raise a Glass at the Niagara Icewine Festival

The Niagara region is home to some of the best icewine in Canada. Wine lovers look forward to the cold weather to indulge in this sweet dessert wine , often referred to as liquid gold. Each year in January, Niagara Falls hosts the Niagara Icewine Gala to celebrate the region’s best icewines and culinary scene. This 19+ event includes wine, beer, delicious food, and live entertainment and features wine from 35 wineries across Ontario.

Looking out over the Horseshoe Falls from the Skylon Tower observation deck

10. Observe the Falls From Up High at the Skylon Tower

Get as high above the Falls as possible without a helicopter while at the Skylon Tower ! Choose to stay warm during winter at their indoor observation area or bundle up and go outside to their outdoor viewing deck. See panoramic views of the Falls while almost 800 ft above Niagara Falls . On a clear day, see as far as Toronto and Buffalo from the Skylon Tower. I visited the Skylon Tower in late winter/early spring when the Falls were slowly waking up from their winter slumber, and oh, was it windy on the outdoor observation deck!

Niagara Falls Skylon Tower dinner

Another way to visit the Skylon Tower is by enjoying a meal at their revolving restaurant. While I had dinner at the Skylon Tower in the spring, I would love to see it in winter. You can’t get a better view of the Falls while dining! Add a trip to the Skylon Tower to your Niagara winter itinerary.

11. Experience Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed

Located in the restored Niagara Parks Power Station , experience the night-time light and sound show that is Currents. This interactive media show features projections that react to your presence while immersing you in the history of Niagara Falls and harnessing its power for over 100 years. See the water of the Horseshoe Falls transform during this 30-minute sensory experience through imagery, light, colour, sound, and music.

Niagara Falls hot chocolate trail is a perfect winter activity to keep you warm after exploring

12. Sip on Hot Cocoa at the Niagara Falls Hot Chocolate Trail

A yummy winter activity, the Niagara Falls Hot Chocolate Trail is a fun addition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Winter Festival of Lights. This self-guided hot chocolate trail features 17 stops and 23 wild flavours of hot chocolate, ranging from classic to orange to s’mores (non-alcoholic and alcoholic options available). Warm up this winter with delicious hot cocoa from local restaurants each night from November to February. Perfect for a cold night exploring Niagara.

Here is a map of the Hot Chocolate Trail to guide your sweet journey. While walking the hot chocolate trail, I enjoyed a chocolate orange hot chocolate from Niagara Distillery. It looked so pretty and was perfect before heading outside to walk along the Falls.

Niagara Falls fireworks

13. Watch Fireworks Over the Falls

There’s nothing like watching fireworks explode over Niagara Falls to make your trip more memorable. During winter in Niagara, there are continued Fireworks shows on weekend evenings from November through February, plus additional nightly displays over the Christmas holidays. The Niagara Falls fireworks displays can be seen from many points within the city, including the SkyWheel, your Fallsview hotel room, standing in front of the Horseshoe Falls, and more. Shows start at 8 pm and are weather dependent.

Here is the schedule of Niagara’s winter Fireworks for your convenience.

14. Walk through the Tailrace Tunnel

Discover an underground perspective of Niagara Falls by visiting one of Niagara’s newest attractions: The Tailrace Tunnel . Ride an elevator 180 ft below the historic Niagara Parks Power Station to the tunnel, leading to panoramic views from the observation deck at the river’s edge.

Excavated over 115 years ago using only lanterns, rudimentary dynamite, pickaxes and shovels, the tunnel has been called a marvel of engineering. Learn the power station’s history and walk the same path once travelled by water to enjoy this new angle of the Niagara River and Falls. The Tailrace Tunnel is open year-round, so you can stop by while sightseeing in Niagara in winter.

Niagara SkyWheel in winter

15. Stay “Inside” at the SkyWheel

A fun activity, even in winter, ride Clifton Hill’s SkyWheel day or night for incredible views of the Falls while staying “indoors.” Standing 175 feet over the Niagara skyline, the SkyWheel is Canada’s largest observation wheel . Enjoy the 8-12 minute ride in a climate-controlled gondola as you take in scenic views of the American Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and other Niagara attractions in comfort.

16. Snowshoe Along Niagara Parks’ Winter Trails

Admire winter in Niagara by getting outside and snowshoeing along Niagara Parks’ winter trails . On weekends from late December to late March, there are three snowshoe trails at the Whirlpool Golf Course. The self-guided trails offer multiple difficulty levels so all skill levels can experience snowshoeing in Niagara Falls. Bring your own or rent snowshoes on-site and enjoy the winter sights along the Niagara River Parkway from the scenic lookouts along the trails.

Visiting Niagara Falls in Winter

Here is what it’s like visiting the city of Niagara Falls throughout the winter months, and the months that feel like winter (late Fall/early Spring):

Niagara Falls in November - WFOL

November in Niagara Falls

While still officially fall, Niagara Falls in November can feel like the beginning of winter, hence why I included it in this guide. November marks the start of the Winter Festival of Lights, the Christmas Market, and brings Niagara into joyful vibes, which continue into December. My most recent visit to Niagara in November had no snow, but the lights still stole the show.

Niagara Falls in December

December in Niagara Falls

It can be hit or miss for snow in Niagara Falls in December, but the holiday spirit is in full bloom. Festivals and markets are open and lively. The end of December brings the official start of winter and NYE celebrations, as one year ends and the next is ready to begin. November and December are great months to enjoy the festive side of Niagara and are among my favourite months to visit Niagara Falls. Visit after a light snowfall for a magical Niagara moment.

Niagara Falls in January

January in Niagara Falls

The coldest winter month, where daily highs are at or below 0°C, be prepared to bundle up while visiting Niagara Falls in January. Snow was everywhere, from the Falls to the ground, to the Niagara River. You almost couldn’t see the American Falls as there was so much snow and mist. January is an excellent month to visit for fewer crowds, hotel deals, and no lines for indoor winter fun in Niagara.

I had fun visiting Niagara in January with family, and enjoying some indoor activities up Clifton Hill, such as the Fun House and Movieland Wax Museum of Niagara Falls. We almost had the views of the Falls for ourselves! It was great.

Niagara Falls in February

February in Niagara Falls

During Niagara Falls in February, the Falls become covered in a thick layer of snow and ice. The air is crisp, and while it is cold, it tends not to be as frigid as in January. Visiting Niagara in February is one of the best months to see Niagara in its winter glory. The American Falls have a fluffy blanket of snow, and ice surrounds the Horseshoe Falls.

I travelled to Niagara during the February holiday weekend because the weather was pleasant. While it was busy in the afternoon, I found quiet spots to enjoy the falls and take photos, different from the crowds in Niagara in summer. Everyone was near the Horseshoe Falls’ edge to see the ice build-up, so I didn’t go close on this trip to avoid the crowds. Avoid visiting the Falls on Family Day Weekend if you don’t want winter crowds.

Niagara Falls in March

March in Niagara Falls

While Niagara Falls in March can still be chilly, but it has a mix of warmer days and marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Early March is still technically winter and can still bring snow. The Falls, while not covered in snow, still have snow and ice at the base that floats along the Niagara River. I visited the US side of the Falls on a lovely warm winter day, and while I didn’t wear a coat during the day, I had one for the cooler evening temperatures.

Niagara Falls Winter Temperature

During the winter, daily average temperatures for Niagara for December, January, and February range from 2°C to -1°C and night-time lows average -4°C to -8°C. The weather in winter is cold, windy, and snowy, with the wind chill and mist from the Falls making the temperature feel colder than the forecast.

what to wear in Niagara Falls in winter

What to Wear to Niagara Falls in Winter

When packing for a Niagara winter vacation, you will want to dress in layers as it can get quite cold in winter. Wear essential outerwear items, including a warm winter coat, hat, scarf, gloves, and boots. For winter clothing, plan to wear pants or a skirt/dress with leggings, long-sleeve tops or sweaters.

Wear more clothing layers than you think, and bring a day bag to carry any layers you remove or need to add when you plan to spend the entire day and night outside. You will want to dress warmly to have the best winter experience in Niagara, especially at night.

My typical winter outfit for a cold day in Niagara Falls includes a tank top, sweater, pants with possible longjohns underneath, winter coat, scarf, gloves, and boots. For a milder winter day, I wear a sweater, pants, coat, and boots.

Helpful Tips for Visiting Niagara Falls in Winter

  • Wear footwear with a good grip ; so you don’t slip while walking on ice. Also, don’t try to run on ice, as you will fall.
  • Bundle up and wear layers to keep warm . You don’t want to be cold, especially while walking around outside for hours.
  • Be prepared to get misted the closer you get to the Horseshoe Falls . If you don’t want to get wet, don’t get near the Canadian Falls.

If you find yourself in Niagara Falls during the winter, there is still plenty of things to do. While different than visiting in summer or fall, the winter offers fewer crowds and the magic of seeing the falls covered in snow and ice. So get outside and enjoy Niagara’s winter activities not offered at other times of the year.

Visiting Niagara Falls Canada

The waterfalls of Niagara Falls lie on the border of Canada and the United States of America, and somewhat confusingly Niagara Falls is also the name of the towns which lie on each side of the waterfalls and the border.  To be clear, this article focuses on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada.  The activities and things to do in Niagara Falls listed here all refer to the Canadian side.

If you are in Canada and want to visit the American side of Niagara Falls, you will need to have the correct paperwork in order to cross the border into the United States, whether that is a passport or a visa if necessary.  It is a true border between the two countries, so you can’t just wander across without going through the immigration checks.

The Rainbow Bridge is a popular place to cross the border, as you can walk, cycle or drive across at any time of the day or night for a small fee, as long as you go through immigration.

There is a great view of Niagara Falls from Rainbow Bridge, and is often where you can see a rainbow shining in the spray from the falls.  When I visited Niagara Falls from the American side way back in 2002 we walked across the bridge from the US side to visit Canada, although it was only for about half an hour!

If you have more time to spend on the American side there are plenty of things to do in Niagara Falls New York to keep you busy, including Niagara Falls Observation Tower, and Niagara Falls State Park which has attractions like the Cave of the Winds boat tour, and Terrapin Point where you can get close-up views of the top of the falls.

The Rainbow Bridge Niagara Falls from the US Side

However, for this article, we’re focusing on Niagara Falls Canada, so let’s dive into our Niagara Falls guide!

Why Winter is the Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls

It is a well-known fact that Niagara Falls is a popular place to visit in Canada. Lovers, families, friends and solo travellers flock to this iconic Canadian tourist destination from across the world in order to catch a glimpse of the magnificent waterfalls also known as Niagara Falls.

Imagine yourself surrounded by a field of soft white cotton, with the snow falling gently onto the tip of your nose, a cold breeze blowing, and a cool mist spattering against your face. With the vision of the ice sparkling against the largest waterfalls in North America, you can’t help but feel like you’re in a fairytale, not the Ontario tourist town of Niagara Falls.

While summer is the most popular time to visit Niagara Falls, a visit to this wonderland during the winter months should be added to everyone’s bucket list. Winter is the best time to visit Niagara Falls Ontario if you want to avoid the mass amount of tourists, and the prices of many of the top attractions drop slightly which makes this popular destination more affordable for families.

Winter Weather in Niagara Falls

To sum up the winter weather in Niagara Falls in one word, it’s COLD! From December through to March, the temperature in Niagara Falls drops significantly with the average daily temperature being below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

The coldest month of the year in Niagara Falls is January with the temperature dropping to an average low of 20 degrees Fahrenheit and reaching a high of 31 degrees Fahrenheit. Factor in the wind chill and the mist from the waterfalls, and you have frigid weather.

What to Wear When Visiting Niagara Falls in the Winter

Niagara Falls is the ultimate destination to visit during the winter, but given the cold weather, it is essential to dress appropriately in order to enjoy your time exploring everything that Niagara Falls has to offer.

Part of the fun of visiting Niagara Falls during the winter is experiencing the outdoor activities and taking in Niagara’s natural wonders. When considering how to dress for your Niagara Falls adventure, think layers, layers and more layers!

You will definitely need the standard winter jacket, snow pants, boots, hat and mitts, but I would also add a base layer and mid layer to your packing list. I recommend that jeans be avoided if you plan on spending the day out in the cold, as they have a tendency to retain the cold and moisture.

You will get wet when you are close to the falls so a good quality waterproof jacket is highly recommended.

The Best Things To Do In Niagara Falls In The Winter

There are activities and adventures galore in Niagara Falls, even when visiting throughout the winter months. Whether you are an indoor or outdoor person, Niagara Falls has something for everyone.

Some of the top things to do in Niagara Falls at any time of year include:

  • Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour
  • Sparkling and Icewine Tasting
  • Small Group Wine Tour of Niagara-on-the-Lake

You can browse more tours and attractions in Niagara Falls here .  Most of the tours and activities in Niagara Falls are available throughout the year, you’ll just need to dress accordingly – and remember that it gets dark earlier during the winter – and plan your trip bearing in mind the weather might not cooperate!

Outdoor Winter Activities in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a year-round playground and when visiting in the wintertime you will still have the same choice of activities as you would if visiting throughout the Summer months. The bonus is that there will be way fewer tourists, as long as you are prepared for the cold weather and snow in Niagara Falls.

Journey Behind the Falls Viewing Deck

View the Falls

Viewing the Falls themselves is why people come to Niagara Falls, and they are never more beautiful than in the wintertime. Bring your camera as you will want to capture the glistening ice and icicles that form in the cold winter weather and hang precariously from the rocks surrounding the Falls.

The great news is that viewing Niagara Falls is free, as the Falls are in a public location on Niagara Parks land and can be accessed for free 24/7 all year around. Walk along the promenade and stop off at the viewpoints to enjoy different perspectives of the Falls – Queen Victoria Park is a popular spot.

Nightly Illumination

The Nightly Illumination shines a spotlight over the Falls year-round, transforming the Falls into a multi-coloured masterpiece. This light show can be seen from most locations in the Niagara Falls tourist district, as well as from rooms in many of the hotels. It is a scene that you won’t want to miss, and the view is particularly impressive from Victoria Park or the Skylon Tower.

Niagara Falls Illuminated at Night

Journey Behind the Falls

The Journey Behind the Falls in my opinion is a “must do” activity in Niagara Falls, especially when visiting Niagara Falls during the winter. You will descend 125 feet below and have the opportunity to view the Falls from behind. The frozen rocks and Falls make this activity even more spectacular during the winter months.

Niagara Falls Skywheel

Niagara Skywheel

When visiting Niagara Falls in the winter, make time to view Canada’s must-see attraction from the Niagara Skywheel. This viewing opportunity will provide a unique view of the Falls from 175 feet above (and kids and couples will especially love it).

Pre-purchase your admission ticket online .

Clifton Hill

You can’t be a proper tourist in Niagara Falls without wandering around Clifton Hill. Clifton Hill is where you will find many indoor museums, mini-golf, restaurants, coffee shops, candy stores, arcades, laser golf, and of course, souvenir shops. Clifton Hill is where the action is, even in the winter.

Attractions and Restaurants on Clifton Hill - Frankenstein Themed Burger King

Indoor Winter Activities in Niagara Falls

When it is time to escape the cold winter weather in Niagara Falls and head indoors, you will have plenty of options to choose from here.

Butterfly Conservatory

The Butterfly Conservatory is one of the largest enclosed butterfly conservatories in North America, boasting over 2,000 species of butterflies. While wandering the cobblestone stone paths lined with trickling waterfalls, you may get lucky and have a butterfly land on you.

Butterfly in the There are over 2,000 butterfly species at Butterfly Conservatory at Niagara Falls

Bird Kingdom

Talk a walk through the world’s largest free-flying indoor aviary and discover hundreds of tropical birds. You will want to have your camera handy to snap a shot of your bird encounters.

If you are visiting Niagara Falls with kids, they will love a day at one of Niagara Falls’s indoor waterparks. Bring bathing suits and spend the day water sliding and splashing around in the heated water. Why stop at a day, book a night to get the most out of your Niagara Falls visit?

Niagara Parks Power Station

Niagara’s newest attraction involves descending 180 feet below ground to walk through a 2,200 foot long tunnel to the observation deck along the river’s edge. Learn the history while you explore the first major power plant on the Canadian side of the river.

Skylon Tower

To end a perfect day in Niagara Falls, travel 764 feet up and dine at one of the two dining rooms located in the Skylon Tower for some of the best views of Niagara Falls in Canada. This entertainment hub is also home to an indoor/outdoor viewing deck, 12 specialty shops, an amusement area, and food court.

Things to do During Christmas in Niagara Falls

From late November through December to the beginning of January, Niagara Falls celebrates Christmas cheer and all the fun of the Holiday season. In my opinion, this is the best time to visit Niagara Falls as you can’t help but feel like you are in a fairytale.

Winter Festival of Lights

Throughout the Christmas Season, life-like displays of lights, characters, and scenes from your favourite festive movies are spread along the river. Consider visiting on a weekend and enjoy free live music as you wander through the massive light display. This free event is Canada’s largest outdoor light festival.

Niagara Falls Santa Claus Parade

Get into the Holiday spirit by attending Niagara Falls annual Santa Claus parade which takes place in November each year. It starts at Victoria Avenue and ends at the City Hall with a tree lighting ceremony to mark the start of the Christmas decorations.

Niagara Falls Christmas Market

Get a jump start with your Christmas shopping at the Niagara Falls Christmas Market, which is open Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays from November 12th to December 18th. With up to 50 Vendors to choose from you will surely find a gift for everyone on your list.

New Year’s Eve in Niagara Falls, Canada

There is no better way to ring in the New Year than to listen to the sound of live bands playing alongside the backdrop of the illuminated Falls. Grab a hot chocolate from one of the many coffee shops and bring the family to this fun, free event. End the year off with a bang as Canada’s largest fireworks display lights up the sky over the Falls.

Visit Niagara Falls in January for the Icewine Festival

To combat the winter blues, why not visit the Niagara Region in January and help to celebrate one of Canada’s many prized treasures…. Icewine! The Niagara Icewine Festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday for three weeks every January. Book your hotel room early as they fill up fast for this event.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls in the Winter

Since Niagara Falls is a popular tourist destination, accommodations can be quite expensive, although they are more reasonably priced during the winter months.

Any of the Niagara Falls hotels with a view of the Falls will be more expensive, but when booking a falls-view or river-view room at any of these hotels, you will be able to view the nightly illumination from the comfort of your hotel room so it might be worth the extra cost if you can afford it!

My personal favourites are:

  • Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa
  • Marriott on the Falls
  • Sheraton Fallsview

This route is part of the Niagara Winter Festival of Lights , and it goes through Queen Victoria Park, Dufferin Islands, and more.

The route runs from early December until early January.

Take a hike through Niagara Glen

This 6,000-acre park is a nature lover’s paradise.

The reserve sits near Niagara Whirlpool and has 4 km or 2.5 miles of hiking trails to trek through. It’s a pet-friendly reserve, and you don’t have to pay for entrance or parking.

In winter, the trails are covered in snow and sometimes ice, making for a beautiful hike but also one that you need to be wary of.

Be sure to dress warmly and wear proper footwear.

Some viewing spots and especially treacherous pathways may be closed during winter, so look out for signs — and obey them!

Explore Niagara-On-The-Lake

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a charming town in Ontario that is worth visiting any time of year.

However, it is especially beautiful in winter, when the snow creates a picturesque landscape and the town is lit up with Christmas decorations.

This charming town is filled with 19th-century buildings, tree-lined streets, and a rich history.

There are plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy, as well as scenic walks along the river. The best part is that it’s all free!

Visit a Christmas market

When you visit Niagara Falls in winter, there’s a high chance you’ll get to experience the Niagara region’s Christmas cheer.

The main place to soak in some festive spirit is at the Niagara Christmas market in Downtown Niagara Falls.

Take a cooking class

If you’re a foodie, you’ll love taking a cooking class at a local culinary school.

Not only will the kitchen be one of the warmest places you can find, but indulging in a lovingly-prepared meal is another winter warmer idea.

Niagara College offers classes for all levels, from beginner to expert. You’ll learn how to cook traditional Canadian dishes as well as international cuisine.

See the Niagara Falls Illumination

While the sight of Niagara Falls during the day is often a breathtaking moment, we’re here to tell you that it gets even better!

Anyone who has visited Niagara Falls only during the day just hasn’t seen this natural wonder’s full potential.

Every night, Niagara Falls becomes illuminated in a rainbow of colors. It’s a spectacular sight and one that you won’t want to miss.

In winter, the show starts at 5:00 pm and runs until midnight.

Book a Niagara Fall day and night tour here

Catch a firework show at Queen Victoria Park

Every evening at 10:00 pm, a burst of light shoots into the sky above Queen Victoria Park, Niagara Falls’ main parkland.

niagara falls winter trip

This show of fireworks comes from Niagara Gorge, but the best place to see it over the Falls is Queen Victoria Park.

The show only lasts about five minutes, so you really can’t be late. This is also another weather-permitting activity since rain or snow means no fireworks.

Visit Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens in Niagara Falls Canada

If you drive north from the Falls, in about 10 minutes, you’ll find these European-style gardens.

The 40-hectare green space first opened in 1936 and has been going strong ever since.

The gardens are open all year round and offer a variety of seasonal events.

An adult entry ticket starts at $15.95 CAD. When purchased online, the general admission price includes any time visits with no expiration dates (but are non-refundable).

See the famed Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum

For a bit of fun, head to Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum. It’s full of odd and interesting artifacts from around the world.

Either way, it’s a great way to get a bird’s eye view of the city. The tower is also home to an arcade and a fine dining restaurant.

Note: You will need to buy entrance tickets to gain access to the tower , the deck, and the inside attractions.

This is more than a chocolate store. It’s an interactive shopping experience set in a 7,000-square-foot space.

You can take a tour of the chocolate factory, make your own candy bar, and indulge in sweet treats.

And don’t miss out on taking the HERSHEY’S Chocolate Tour ride, which is totally free. This is great for everyone but tops the list of family-friendly activities in Niagara Falls.

Check out the street art in Niagara Falls

At one stage, the entire Niagara region had a problem with graffiti being plastered across the walls of the suburbs.

So residents and business owners decided to take things into their own hands and create street art murals to prevent graffiti and vandalism.

In recent years, Niagara Falls has become a mecca for street art. There are murals and graffiti all over the city. It’s a great way to explore the city and see some incredible art.

Take a walking tour on your own or with a group and discover some of the beauty around the towns.

Interact with exhibits at the Niagara Parks Power Station

Visit Canada’s first major power plant and learn about the hydroelectric power generation process of the station.

Before it was closed, this power plant harvested the energy of Horseshoe Falls to create electricity for Canadian residents.

In 2021, the plant opened as a museum with interactive exhibits. Inside, you’ll find the original turbines that were used to generate power, as well as a variety of historical artifacts.

❄️ FAQs – Best Niagara Falls Winter Tours

Niagara Falls is incredible to visit all year long. In fact, Niagara Falls is even more breathtaking in the winter . From the snow-covered trees, and the sparkle of the ice on the partially frozen American Falls, it really is a sight to behold.

No. The Falls do not freeze over completely during the winter. There has only been one case noted on Niagara Parks’ records where the Falls froze over completely. This was back in 1848 and was due to sub-zero temperatures and an accumulation of ice stopping the flow of water. Since then, barriers have been put in place to ensure that this can no longer happen.

Yes. The Journey Behind the Falls remains open all year long . If you are looking for a new way to see the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, you will definitely not be disappointed during this adventure.

No. The boats do not go behind the Falls. The Maid of the Mist boats will take you from the docks, past the base of the American Falls, and then into the basin of the magnificent Canadian Horseshoe Falls. The views of the Falls during this excursion are absolutely breathtaking and one-of-a-kind! Just prepare to get a little wet!

Yes! Most wineries here in Niagara are OPEN all year round . And although many have reduced hours, and may not offer the same services (like tours or outdoor patios), they are still fun to visit. In fact, some even offer special winter activities, like a full outdoor skating rink at Wayne Gretzky’s Winery , that are a ton of fun and make the trip to Niagara worthwhile.

It is best to dress warmly and in layers when visiting Niagara Falls in winter. Boots, hats, gloves, and a waterproof jacket are all recommended if you are planning to venture behind the Falls or head out on one of the cruises.

Niagara Falls: 4 Mistakes to Avoid & What to do Instead

This post contains affiliate links, for which I may earn a commission if you make a qualifying purchase.

niagara falls winter trip

Sharing is caring!

When we took our first trip to Niagara Falls more than a decade ago, I was convinced it would be our last. It wasn’t that impressive, the area seemed kind of tacky and in three hours we felt like we’d seen more than we really needed to.

It turns out we were doing it wrong. We made plenty of Niagara Falls “rookie mistakes”, but fortunately I learned from them and our visit at the end of our epic New York/Canada road trip . Our second trip to Niagara Falls was far more successful, so I’m here to share what I’ve learned along the way: the best things to do in Niagara Falls and what not to do in Niagara Falls. You’ll also find out where to stay in Niagara Falls, how to get around Niagara Falls Canada and more in this Niagara Falls trip planning guide.

Where to stay in Niagara Falls (Canadian side)

niagara falls winter trip

I’ll discuss the reasons why more below, but I strongly recommend that you get a hotel on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. There are a few features I’d look out for that are specific to staying overnight in Niagara Falls, and in my opinion a clear winner .

  • Falls view: The point of staying overnight in Niagara Falls is to have an amazing view at all hours, so don’t skimp on this! If you’re using a hotel comparison engine to narrow things down by price, they generally show you the cheapest available room rather than the room with the view you want – prepare to do some digging.
  • Accessibility to Niagara Falls viewing area: The vast majority of Niagara Falls hotels with a view are located along Fallsview Blvd. However , that’s up a fairly steep hill from the platforms along Niagara Parkway and there’s basically just one pedestrian route connecting them – Murray Street.
  • Breakfast: In 2022 none of the hotels were offering free breakfast, and it showed. I kid you not that the line at the closest Tim Horton’s was out the door and all the way along the outside wall of the shop at 9am! For 2023, it looks like complimentary breakfast is back on at many hotels. If you’re planning ahead for a visit during the busy summer season, try to book a hotel that will serve a quick breakfast and get you out the door and on your way to the top Niagara Falls attractions.

Speaking of planning ahead, the good rooms at best hotels in Niagara Falls do book up early! Don’t miss out on a room with a view of Niagara Falls, especially if you’re visiting in the summer.

niagara falls winter trip

So which hotel do I think you should stay at in Niagara Falls? To me the winner is Embassy Suites Niagara Falls/Fallsview – which is not where we stayed . The Embassy Suites has a front-and-center view of both the American and Canadian sides for the nighttime light show, and it’s one of the best hotels where you can see the Niagara Falls fireworks! It’s one of the tallest hotels in Niagara Falls, so there are lots of opportunities for an excellent view. The hotel includes free breakfast and an evening manager’s reception, plus there’s a Starbucks in the lobby.

The other piece that makes the Embassy Suites a stand-out is the Niagara Falls Incline Railway in its backyard. Instead of hoofing it all the way to the Casino and traversing the steep hill of Murray Street, you can pay a few dollars to be deposited right where you want to go: the main viewing platform for Niagara Falls and the Niagara Falls Welcome Center. The Incline Railway is a miniature funicular and you can buy unlimited rides for just over $6 CAD per day. While the Niagara Falls Incline Railway is available to anyone willing to pay, the convenience for Embassy Suites guests is just unparalleled.

Check prices on these sites to make sure you get the best deal on the Embassy Suites in Niagara Falls:

niagara falls winter trip

If the Embassy Suites is so great, why didn’t we stay there? First, because I didn’t fully realize how isolated most of Fallsview Blvd is from Niagara Parkway (and when we arrived late at night the hotel clerk didn’t mention that we could shorten our walk by catching the Incline Railway). But second, I booked relatively last-minute for a holiday weekend and the cost would have been much more than I was willing to swallow.

As a compromise, we stayed up the street at the Radisson Hotel & Suites Fallsview . Check out our view above! In addition to the cheaper room, parking cost a reasonable $25 CAD compared with $70 CAD at Embassy Suites (yes, you read that right).

The Radisson isn’t nearly as tall as many of its neighbors and it’s located behind them (specifically this one ), but they do offer several rooms (including ours) with excellent views. Check out our view here! It flies a little “under the radar” compared to some of its neighbors so you may be more likely to score a deal compared with other Fallsview hotels. The staff was very helpful and the kids couldn’t get enough of the enormous polar bear in the lobby.

Check prices for the Radisson Niagara Falls here:

A final option to consider is the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel . It underwent a massive renovation within the last few years. It offers great views of Niagara Falls if you select the right room – be careful when booking because some rooms don’t even have a window (which I’ve never actually experienced at a hotel). If you want to see Horseshoe Falls, you have to select either “Fallsview” (preferably high floor) or “Canadian Fallsview Corner”.

One reason lots of families like the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel is that it’s directly connected to the fantastic Fallsview Indoor Waterpark. When you book directly through Marriott you can select a package that includes tickets. The waterpark has fun for all ages and is open (and heated) year-round.

If none of these strikes your fancy, this handy map should help you find a great hotel that meets your location needs and budget:

Niagara Falls Mistakes to Avoid

Want to have an amazing trip to Niagara Falls? Be sure not to make these mistakes – including a few that we’ve made in the past .

DON’T: Stay only on the American side

niagara falls winter trip

On our first visit to Niagara Falls, many years ago, we were driving from Buffalo and made a quick stop en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Stopping on the American side of Niagara Falls made sense for our plans so that’s what we did.

Unfortunately, the view from the American side of Niagara Falls is… incomplete. You can’t see all of Horseshoe Falls, and you’re standing right next to American Falls so that you can’t see all of that either when you’re in Niagara Falls State Park. When you’re debating Niagara Falls Canada vs New York, the winner is clear.

The only reason to skip the Canadian side of Niagara Falls in favor of the American side is if you don’t have a passport or you’re in a huge rush coming from the New York. If you have enough time, feel free to stop at both!

I won’t go into depth on the tourist attractions in Niagara Falls NY, but you’ll want to check out both Maid of the Mist and Niagara Falls observation tower (which extends over Niagara River Gorge) so that you can see American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Under the encouragement of Frederick Law Olmsted, the area surrounding the falls was wisely preserved as America’s first state park so there are plenty of beautiful free viewpoints.

We always love to book a photoshoot when we’re traveling. As a mom, it’s tough to get in the photos since I’m always behind the camera. We use Flytographer to capture our memories. You can get $25 off your shoot by booking with this link or using code FAMILYVOYAGE.

DON’T: Get sucked into a scam

niagara falls winter trip

Confession time: on that ill-fated first trip to Niagara Falls, we didn’t do any research. We were just taking a quick side trip from Buffalo and we assumed everything would be straightforward. Go take in a view point, take a ride on Maid of the Mist and then move on to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Everything seemed fine as we pulled into the parking lot at One Niagara Welcome Center (pictured above so that you can avoid it) – it offers some of the cheapest parking in Niagara Falls New York. But once in the lot, we were funneled into the massive, official-looking building in order to access the Falls.

Since they advertise attraction tickets we asked to buy tickets for Maid of the Mist. They were happy to sell us tickets, but told us that the only way to go on Maid of the Mist was as part of a tour to see several Niagara Falls sites. That was an out and out lie, but we only found out after we had paid and been herded onto a shuttle bus that took us miles away (with other unsuspecting tourists) to see some other part of the Niagara River. At the end of the tour, more than an hour later, we were dropped off at the actual entrance to Maid of the Mist and handed bulk-purchased tickets.

Needless to say the experience left a bad taste in our mouths, as we felt we’d been cheated of our time, our money and our preference to be independent travelers. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York State and has the infrastructure to match – just don’t get suckered.

DON’T: Spend all of your time mobbed by tourists

niagara falls winter trip

The most popular place in Niagara Falls, Canada is the walkway between the Table Rock Visitors Center and the boarding area for Niagara City Cruises, then continuing up to the Clifton Hill entertainment area. It’s packed!

Don’t be afraid to get away from the crows to have a different Niagara Falls experience. We found it much more peaceful on either end of Niagara Parkway (closer to Rainbow Bridge and near the Niagara Parks Power Station ). After being packed like sardines on a 700 person boat, finding ourselves virtually alone in Bird Kingdom was a welcome change – more on that below!

Another great way to avoid huge crowds is to visit Niagara Falls in winter !

DON’T: Leave after just a few hours

niagara falls winter trip

While you could get a quick taste of Niagara Falls just by looking out from the platform and taking a boat tour, you’d be missing out! Seeing Niagara Falls illuminated at night, getting below the Falls, watching fireworks over the American Falls, checking out an aerial view of Horseshoe Falls… there’s just so much to do that it’s worth spending at least 1 day in Niagara Falls.

We arrived in Niagara Falls mid-afternoon and departed just before lunch the following day. That allowed us enough time to see the Falls both day and night, and also minimized our crowded, tourist-priced meals.

niagara falls winter trip

Even if you’re only exploring the Niagara Falls American side, it’s still worth catching the unique side view of the illuminated American Falls before checking into your Niagara Falls New York hotel for the night.

Niagara Falls Things to Do

niagara falls winter trip

We’ve gone over what not to do, but what are the best things to do in Niagara Falls? Here are a few absolute “musts” along with Niagara Falls tips to ensure everything goes smoothly for you. Don’t forget to slow down and enjoy how pretty the area is!

DO: Get a room with a view

niagara falls winter trip

I’m not normally a hotel splurger, and I hesitate to even call our one night at the Fallsview Radisson a “splurge” at just over $300 USD. But there’s truly something special about seeing Niagara Falls from above during both the day and night. I even went to sleep with the window shade up a bit so that I could watch the light show on Horseshoe Falls from bed.

Since I went over the Fallsview hotels I recommend above I won’t rehash them now, but be sure to review those options carefully. Here are a few quick picks:

  • Embassy Suites Niagara Falls/Fallsview
  • Radisson Hotel & Suites Fallsview
  • Map view with more options

DO: Take a boat tour

niagara falls winter trip

One of the most classic things to do in Niagara Falls is a boat tour, either Maid of the Mist on the New York side or Niagara City Cruises (formerly Hornblower) on the Canadian side. The two Niagara Falls boat tours are basically the same except for the departure point and the Canadian boats are a little nicer in my opinion. They both cross in front of the American Falls and then proceed into the thundering water of Horseshoe Falls for a drenching. Thankfully both boats give visitors a poncho to stay dry – red on the Canadian side and blue on the American side.

How long is the Niagara Falls boat tour? Surprisingly, it’s only about 20 minutes. But allow plenty of time for the complete “experience” if you’re visiting Niagara Falls in the summer – from the time we got in line to board to the time we disembarked it was a solid hour, plus a few more minutes waiting for an elevator back to the top.

What should you wear for Maid of the Mist or Hornblower? On a small adult carrying a backpack, the poncho goes to about knee length. I chose to wear shorts and waterproof shoes to avoid walking around soggy for the rest of the day. The ponchos extend much further on kids obviously, so only their shoes were exposed. One kid wore Keens while the other wore these boots and both stayed dry and comfortable.

niagara falls winter trip

Where is the best place to stand on a Niagara City Cruise? We took our Niagara Falls cruise in the afternoon, and it worked out great to park ourselves near the front of the boat a little toward the American side. We had a fantastic view of all three waterfalls for almost the entire boat ride and didn’t have the sun in our eyes except for a brief time at the end (when we were already soaked from Horseshoe Falls and didn’t care).

Can you take a baby on Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower)? There’s no age restriction on children riding the Hornblower/Niagara City Cruises/Maid of the Mist. However , you need to think carefully about how you’re going to bring your baby on board. The provided ponchos do a very good job of keeping your upper half dry, but wouldn’t be safe for babywearing since they’re totally unbreathable.

The family next to us actually brought their entire stroller/car seat travel system on board but quickly seemed to realize it wasn’t a great choice: absolutely everything was soaked as soon as we got near Horseshoe Falls and there’s a risk that their car seat will develop rust and/or mold if not properly drained and air dried very quickly. At some point they took their overwhelmed and unhappy baby out of her car seat to hold her and they did their best to hold the slippery poncho around her. I’m not sure there’s really a great way to take a baby on a Niagara Falls boat tour but hopefully this at least gives you some food for thought.

DO: See Niagara Falls from different perspectives

niagara falls winter trip

The water flow rate over Niagara Falls clocks in at a cool 750,000 gallons per second . It is truly jaw-dropping and a place you have to see.

But one of the most fascinating things about Niagara Falls is that it looks completely different depending on where you’re standing. Give yourself time to check it out from different angles! Obviously be sure to stop at the main viewing areas along Niagara Parkway – there’s a reason this area is the most popular place to view Niagara Falls.

niagara falls winter trip

I’d recommend heading to the far ends of town for a more unique perspective in addition. For instance, if you head over toward the Falls from the Niagara Parks Power Station (more on that later) you can actually get right near the water before it tumbles over the cliff… and then you can get down to the bottom of the Falls too.

Closer to (of even on ) Rainbow Bridge on the opposite side of town you’ll get a wider perspective on the Falls. You can also get that broader – and higher – perspective from the top of Skylon Tower standing 775 feet above the Falls. Be sure to check this Groupon for discounted tickets!

DO: Consider your transportation options

niagara falls winter trip

The simplest way to visit Niagara Falls is by car. That’s straight-forward if you’re on a road trip, but if you’re flying in you’ll want to arrive in Toronto (2-2.5 hours depending on traffic) or Buffalo (45 minutes plus time to cross the border).

While Buffalo Niagara International Airport is closer, flights may be more limited an expensive – for example, our home in Columbus is much closer to Buffalo and in the same country, but Buffalo flights are more expensive and inexplicably require a stop. Greater Rochester International Airport faces the same challenges and is even further from Niagara Falls, though it’s a good gateway to visiting the Finger Lakes NY .

Keep in mind travel document requirements, which vary based on exactly how you get to Niagara Falls, Ontario.

  • Flying into Toronto: Everyone needs a valid passport book
  • Flying into Buffalo and crossing overland: Adults need a passport book, passport card, enhanced drivers license ( not the same as Real ID ) or NEXUS card; children under 16 only need a birth certificate

Why does this difference in documentation matter? If you’re planning to visit Niagara Falls with kids and your family doesn’t travel overseas with any regularity, it may be cheaper to fly into Buffalo since only the adults need a passport and they may have access to less expensive alternatives.

Once you get to an airport in the region, you can consider either renting a car or taking one of the many shuttle options from Toronto or from Buffalo . Which option is right for you depends a bit on what you intend to do – if you just want to spend a day or two at the falls, don’t plan on driving or you’re staying at a hotel with crazy expensive parking then the shuttle option maybe be a great fit.

niagara falls winter trip

Within the town of Niagara Falls, you can walk to some locations, take the hop-on/hop-off WEGO tourist bus (particularly the blue line) or drive and park as need be. If you have a rental car, you may want to park it at your hotel as soon as you arrive in Niagara Falls and then walk or take WEGO everywhere. Daily parking at most lots that are anywhere near the falls is $25-30. I paid it one day because it made logistical sense for our plans, but it definitely hurt!

niagara falls winter trip

If you’re thinking about the bus, WEGO Niagara Falls bus fare in 2022 is $10 per 24 hours for adults and $7 per child. You can also combine it with a daily package for the Niagara Falls Incline Railway at $6 per day. These options are all reasonably priced, but if you’re traveling as a family then parking in one of the convenient lots may just be the most sensible choice. In the photo at the top of this section, you can see where the Incline Railway, WEGO and parking all meld together near the Table Rock Welcome Centre.

DO: Visit some less popular attractions

It seems like there are a thousand different Niagara Falls attractions – some good, some bad and apparently some ugly . This time around we managed to have a few fantastic experiences that most tourists overlook.

Niagara Parks Power Station

niagara falls winter trip

The  Niagara Park Power Station  just opened as an attraction in summer 2022, so it’s still a little bit of a hidden gem. It was the first major power station on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and (other than added explanatory posters) still looks much like it did when it was operational. I highly recommend the guided tour, which explains how the falls were used to generate electricity, the fascinating history of the power plant and how it impacted the entire Niagara region.

niagara falls winter trip

After the tour, you’ll take a glass elevator down 180 feet and then walk the half-mile tunnel that used to carry water back into the Niagara River at the base of the falls. The viewing platform adjacent to Horseshoe Falls provides a fantastic perspective. It’s not as immersive as Maid of the Mist and Niagara City Cruises, but without the sheer power of Niagara Falls blinding you with its spray.

niagara falls winter trip

We spent about 2.5 hours at the Power Station including the guided tour and tunnel. The tunnel is cooler than it is outside, so you’ll want to throw a sweatshirt in your bag to be prepared or wear a long sleeved shirt. There are ponchos available (you can see them in yellow in the photo above) in case the wind picks up and brings spray toward the platform, but it’s less common than on the boat tours.

Bird Kingdom

niagara falls winter trip

We often prefer to visit locally-themed attractions when we travel, but an Ontario family we met over the summer convinced me that Bird Kingdom was well worth a visit. They were absolutely right! Be sure to add this to your plans for a family vacation to Niagara Falls, Canada.

Before I tell you how great the experience is, it’s good to know that Bird Kingdom is accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums – their residents come from other zoos, from the Species Survival Program, from surrenders by private owners and other ethical means. It’s run professionally and prioritizes animal welfare.

Now that the critical stuff is covered, our experience at Bird Kingdom was just as lovely as our Canadian friends promised! Even though we visited on Sunday afternoon of a holiday weekend, we were just about the only people there. We spent tons of time privately enjoying the company of parrots, macaws and other exotic birds while peppering their human caregiver with questions about their behaviors, personalities and care. The kids and I were all enthralled!

niagara falls winter trip

The biggest claim to fame is that Bird Kingdom is the world’s largest indoor free-fly aviary. You can easily spend an hour watching a huge variety of birds flying around just being birds! There’s also a fun opportunity to feed the adorable lorikeets.

Thankfully Bird Kingdom has its own two-level parking garage that costs a very reasonable $3 per hour! You pay at the machine with a credit card and just pop the receipt in your windshield. Because Bird Kingdom is past the Rainbow Bridge, it’s much quieter than everything closer to the Falls. We parked our car there and made the quick walk over to Niagara City Cruises, then came back after the boat ride to spend an hour with the birds – Bird Kingdom is open until 6:30 in the summer (last admission 5:45).

We found the cheapest ticket prices through their (permanent?) Groupon using one of the frequently-available coupons to save on local activities.

DO: Drive for food if you need to

niagara falls winter trip

As I scoured Yelp for the best Niagara Falls restaurants, I was struck by the high prices and mediocre reviews paired with exhausting wait times reported for nearly every spot close to the Falls or the popular (and ultra-crowded) Clifton Hill entertainment area. Since I have no tolerance for that combination of traits, I asked some locals where to head for a better experience.

The universal suggestion was to head to the Lundy’s Lane district, about 3km from Clifton Hill. It’s a quick drive but offers better restaurants and little to no wait time even when we visited on a crowded holiday weekend. We had a nice, quiet Thai meal at Micah’s Bistro . Another recommended option is Italian restaurant Carpaccio just across the street.

niagara falls winter trip

The great news is that if you’ve chosen to rely on WEGO to get around Niagara Falls, you can take the red line to Dorchester Road to access some of these good restaurants in Niagara Falls.

For a truly special dining experience, head to nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake for dinner at HOB NOB . It’s housed in a restored 1832 Victorian manor that’s also the location of The Charles Hotel . We dined there for our anniversary what seems like a lifetime ago and it remains a memorable experience! While I know I suggested above staying in Niagara Falls and I still stand by that, I’ll forgive you for choosing the romantic charm of Niagara-on-the-Lake instead.

DO: Explore the rest of the area

The Niagara region of Ontario and western New York offer so many wonderful sites to explore! It would be a shame to overlook them. Even within just a few minutes of Niagara Falls there are a few places that should be on your radar for a Niagara Falls itinerary:

Niagara-on-the-Lake

niagara falls winter trip

On our first visit to the area we stayed overnight in this charming village just 15 minutes north of Niagara Falls, Ontario. It offers beautiful scenery along Lake Ontario, great dining and wonderful wineries to sample. The local specialty is ice wine, which benefits from the cold winters.

niagara falls winter trip

To avoid driving yourself from winery to winery, check out these two unique tour offerings:

  • Small group wine tasting tour – Includes visits to three hand-selected wineries to showcase a variety of styles and sizes
  • Vine and Dine winery bike tour – During our visit we saw just how bike-friendly the region is, so this will be our pick next time! You’ll visit four wineries and enjoy a picnic lunch all while getting in your exercise for the day.

Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center

While most of this article showcases things to do in Niagara Falls, Ontario, there’s one spot that’s on my personal “to visit” list for Niagara Falls, New York: the Underground Railroad Heritage Center . We missed it only because it wasn’t open the day we were on the New York side of Niagara Falls! This is a must-visit if you’re considering a 4 day Niagara Falls itinerary, which would give you plenty of time to explore both sides.

This region played a critical role in the search for freedom by self-emancipated Black Americans. Translation? Even as formerly enslaved people traveled up the East Coast or through Ohio away from “slave states”, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 kept them at risk as long as they remained in the United States. Thousands of people flooded across the Niagara River Suspension Bridge to reach safety and freedom in Canada – you can read more details here .

At the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center you’ll learn the stories of individual freedom seekers and pay homage to their lives through a unique art, interactive exhibits and more. Guided tours are available morning and afternoon most days of the week.

Niagara Falls is the connection point between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. It straddles the border between southern Ontario, Canada and western New York State.

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls affords a more complete view and robust tourism infrastructure for visiting Niagara Falls.

If you don’t have the time or documentation to cross the border to see Niagara Falls’ Canadian side, it’s still worth a quick visit to the American side.

Can I fly into Buffalo and stay in Canada??

Hi Cynthia,

Absolutely! But you’ll need a passport to cross the border.

Safe travels, Melissa

I must say that shared information is really good. I will try to visiit this fall again!

My family and I just came back from the Falls and had a wonderful time. I wish I saw this well written blog prior to our stay, such valuable information!!! Definitely do Maid and the Mist that was extremely fun for the my family. Enjoy your trip and thanks for this insightful information, which I will definitely us upon our return.

I’m so glad you guys enjoyed all of the things to do in Niagara Falls!

Safe travels,

My daughter and I are in Toronto for just four days, and I rented a car from 6 PM Thursday to 6 PM Friday so we could drive out to London to see Western University. I thought about trying to cram in the most American thing ever… a drive-by visit to Niagara Falls!

Thanks to your article I was able to make a plan that worked fine. We left downtown Toronto at 6 AM, arrived at the Falls at 7:30 AM, turned towards the power station and parked in the tour bus only lot that is just 50 yards from the best view of all. No one is out enforcing anything at that time in the morning, so we got a few photos and a video and made it to Western with half an hour to spare. On the return trip we got the car back with another half hour to spare.

Couldn’t follow your recommendations to really take everything in, but it’s better to have seen it than not, yes? I thought it was so majestic at that hour, though very misty.

That’s a quick trip but I’m glad you made it there!

Enjoy your next adventure,

Such great information! We’re planning a trip next summer. Thanks for taking the time to write all of this out.

I’m so glad you found it helpful! Have an amazing trip to Niagara Falls.

Hi Melissa, planning our first family trip to Niagara Falls. Planning to visit both the US and the CAN side. From research, it seems choosing to stay in a hotel on the CAN side is preferred. We are flying from Louisiana. Should we fly into Toronto (YYZ)? 2 hour ride to get to Ontario. However, I don’t know if it would be feasible to fly into closer Niagara Falls Airport (IAG) then cross the Rainbow Bridge with all four of us pulling our carryon luggage to get to our CAN hotel. Thoughts?? Thank you. Really informative blog!

Hi Melanie, thanks for stopping by! The bridge is pretty long and I wouldn’t choose to cross on foot with luggage. Are you renting a car? It’s simple to cross by car.

Nice post. This wasn’t what I was searching for but I still liked reading it.
