Devotional Tour

The Devotional Tour was a 1993 concert tour by English electronic band Depeche Mode in support of the group's eighth studio album, Songs of Faith and Devotion , which was released in March 1993.

The group continued to promote Songs of Faith and Devotion the following year on the Exotic Tour/Summer Tour '94 , which included an additional North American leg. Q magazine refers to Devotional Tour as "the most debauched rock tour ever".

After a two month break, the tour was extended with a named second leg through which the group (minus Andrew Fletcher, who took a leave of absence and was replaced by tour manager and longtime band associate Daryl Bamonte for thirty-nine of its sixty shows) played to countries and territories they had never previously visited, including South Africa, Australia, East Asia, and South America as well as additional shows in the United States and Canada. The tour began with an eleven-week European leg, which kicked off in Lille, France, in mid-May and culminated in London in late July. In September 1993, the group began a North American leg, which commenced in Quebec City, Canada. The 50-date tour continued until early December, when it wrapped up in Mexico City. Later in the month, the band returned to Europe for a short tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The five date jaunt began in Dublin and ended, once again, in London.

Releases [ ]

The concerts in Barcelona, Liévin and Frankfurt were filmed, with the compiled footage issued later that year on a video release entitled Devotional . The video was reissued on DVD in 2004. Additionally, a live album entitled Songs of Faith and Devotion Live was released in December 1993. The album was a track-by-track live duplicate of Songs of Faith and Devotion . The release featured recordings from the concert in Liévin, although two of the tracks were recorded in Copenhagen and New Orleans respectively. Certain tracks were also released on the singles Condemnation and In Your Room.

Tour dates [ ]

  • The two back-to-back nights at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, Mexico are unique in that they are the only two concerts on the Devotional Tour to not feature a support act.
  • Later tours would also employ live female backing vocalists whilst expanding their performative responsibilities. These included the 1998 The Singles Tour , which featured Janet Cooke and Jordan Bailey performing synchronized dances in addition to singing back-up. Bailey would reprise her "lead" backing vocalist role for the Exciter Tour in 2001, where she was joined by Georgia Lewis.
  • Wilder would state that his endurance as a drummer improved over the course of the tour. As a result, and to maintain consistency with the "rockier" nature of the Exotic Tour set, several songs which had previously relegated percussion parts to tape on the "Devotional" leg of the tour were adjusted to allow Wilder an expanded role behind the drum kit. These songs included "Policy of Truth", "Halo", and "Stripped".

Devotional

This is the concert film from "The Devotional Tour". Of note is the DVD release, which features a second disc filled with extra songs, projections, and other features.

While "Death's Door" was recorded (both audio and video), only the audio is played (out of sequence from the original concert setlist), over the end credits of the film.

The "music video" for the live version of "Condemnation" on the DVD is a different edit of the footage on the main DVD.

The original DVD issue was in a cardboard slipcase. The 2005 reissue is in a simple plastic case.

The original US VHS release removed four tracks ("Behind The Wheel", "Mercy In You", "Fly On The Windscreen" and "Everything Counts").

Diary Of A Devotee

Why are Depeche Mode fans called Devotees?

depeche mode devotional tour reddit

Simply put Depeche Mode fans are called Devotees primarily because their extreme loyalty to the band is unrivaled by almost any other music fans.

You could say Devotees are extraordinarily faithful to the band, their music, and their dark and grandiose way of thinking.  If you’re a Devotee then you know that Depeche Mode isn’t just another kind of music, it’s the soundtrack to your life!

It’s all about their Faith & Devotion

The use of the term Devotee started shortly after the explosive 1993 “Devotional” Tour to promote their 8 th album “Songs of Faith and Devotion” This was one of the first tours in history to make use of large screen displays that included dark and hypnotic imagery and videos that meshed perfectly with the darkest music Depeche Mode had produced to date.

Depeche Mode performing Stripped during the Songs of Faith and Devotion Tour 1993

Inspired by a T-shirt?

During the tour the stage crew and roadies wore T-shirts with the words “Devotee” printed on them in purple, and that is when the term Devotee first caught on.  This was the first Depeche Mode concert I ever saw, and I was utterly blown away. I can honestly say that I was a Devotee long before that concert, but I just didn’t have a word for it yet. Ask any other Devotee you come across and they will have a similar story.

Are you a fellow Devotee?

Are you a Devotee as well? I would love to hear when you first realized you were one of the devout.

Since I first listen to them I guess. And love growing each new album. It is a GOOD band.

Yes I am now , I had forgotten how good this band was in the nightclubs. David Gahan and Martin have beautiful singing voices. It’s a huge part of my music at age 68. U could say I grew up with them , their not far behind me. Very few songs are bad.

NO songs are bad – just not to your taste!

Depeche Mode had been in my life since People Are People, grade school. Not only did Martin Gores swag impress me so but the industrial type sounds and roller coaster of sounds that got to me. Over the years I would save up babysitting money to walk miles for Smash Hits magazine just to get a glimpse of them. I loved their lyrics, which I’ve always found to be so vulnerable and human! I had all their albums and listened religiously. Ive seen them every tour since Music For the Masses, at which I peed my pants from the excitement! I’m just about 50 now, not peeing my pants anymore but still enjoying them as much as I did back then! I still follow them and wear more black than the average person and have one lonely rose tattoo on my shoulder. The loss of Andy Fletcher was like losing family and I have nothing but love for the devotion they have for their fans. I feel confident in saying, I’m a devotee. 😘

Hey Melisa it’s always nice to hear from a fellow Devotee! People Are People was the first Depeche Mode song I heard as well, and I will always love the chorus between Martin & Dave at the end of that song. I know all of us Devotees will miss Fletch, but we are grateful for the amazing music he helped create!

Absolutely, Scott! We traveled to NY from Boston this weekend to see them at Madison Square Garden, Andy’s presence was still there but he was very much missed! Great show and well worth the drive 🌹

I have loved their music since before I can pinpoint a date. I grew up with three aunts that were teens when I was born (1983) and that was how Depeche Mode became the soundtrack of my life. My daughters both have also grown up with Depeche Mode being the primary music listened to in our home and know nearly every song it seems. My oldest will be 16 soon and has been to three concerts and my 12 year old has been to two, with two more to come in November! It is so much fun to discuss with my daughters our current favorite songs as it seems our top 10 DM songs are always shifting. We are greatly enjoying the new album and quickly discovering extra new favorites!

Depeche mode have a such a big part of my heart ..the lyrics that Martin writes just hit me hard and i can so relate to them it is just amazing.. i have loved them since i was 13 years and the love goes on and on . I am extremely thankful for some of the songs as the have keept me from going insane when life was hard … i cant listen to Home without crying with thankfulness

Thanks for the heartfelt comment Bara! I was 13 when I first heard People Are People and I have been in love with Depeche Mode ever since! Home is such a beautiful song as well 🙂

Hi there, my name is Călin (it sounds something like Collin), I’m from Romania. Here we have an other word for DM fans, it’s “depeșist” (read it something like Depeche’ist, “someone who is with Depeche”). I’m 46 now and I’m a fan since I was 16. My son’s name is Martin (besides Codrin, a romanian name), although Martin is a very rare name in romanian culture, and I’m very happy everytime I have to tell people why he has that name 🙂 From a romanian Devotee

Hello Calin thank you for sharing your Depeche Mode experience. I always love meeting a fellow depesit 🙂

I was there in București in July 26th this year, it was an brilliant concert. And I wore an Arsenal shirt, for it’s Martin’s favourite football team 😀 And I didn’t mind it at all, although I’m a Liverpool fan 🙋‍♂️ I’m happy I found you on the net, maybe I’ll write some of my DM thoughts here. Greetings from România

Si eu tot depesista 😅 am fost acum in Nov 3 la concert cu Depeche aici in Montreal. Mi am dorit mult sa i vad. Sunt the Best. La sf concertului ma intrebam daca a cantat live ca parca Dave Gahan avea aceiasi voce superba ca in inregistrarile de Pe casetele mele de Pe timpuri 😬😅 de o sapt tot Pe ei ii ascult

Hablo poquito Espanol, pero me encanta Depeche Mode Tambien!

Speak and spell was the first concert I attended , 1981 I was 15 years old , literally a few feet from the group , bang centre of stage up close I could have touched Dave , I was in love with him ha ha , his good looks and snappy dresser he was a massive crush to be but the music .. oh the music I was in my element ! I was a big synth fan and there wasn’t single song I didn’t like , I was there next year for the the broken frame tour then the year after construction time again , the years went by , the music changed with the times but always had that “ Depeche “ sound and uniqueness with that synth I loved so much mixed with grunge / rock , Dave’s the best front man ever and Martin is just wow , rip Fletch .. now I have three grown kids , three grandkids but Depeche are in my blood , I had a tattoo a few years ago of the violater rose to be a permanent part of me , Just saw them in Manchester momento mori tour and it was one of the best nights of my life , they are the theme track of my life 🖤

I’m jealous my first concert was SOFAD in 1993. It sounds like you have have been to some really awesome Depeche Mode concerts. I’m sure seeing them in Manchester was an absolute blast! Stay Depeched 🙂

My first Depeche mode concert was to see the boys on the Construction time tour in Sheffield, 16-09-83 when I was 17 with my younger brother Paul ( he’s got a Violator rose on his arm too but I haven’t any tattoos). We’d seen Depeche on TOTP from release of New Life and liked them but it was when Vince left and A Broken Frame was released that we started to get more into them. But we missed the Sheffield gig in 82 in support of that album but I went to every gig after that up to MFTM which we saw in Sheffield and I was working in Guernsey and flew home for. Then I left the UK in March 88 to live and work in NZ where I still reside today, but I have always loved DM. I finally got to see them again for the 1st time in 30 years in 2017 when I flew to Vancouver and Paul flew from the UK and we saw them at the Roger’s Arena. It was difficult for me to keep my shit together because I felt like bawling my eyes out but with happiness. It’s a deep feeling in one’s heart and stomach and it’s pure love for Martin and Dave for what they have brought to one’s life, like so many others, their music is the soundtrack to our lives. Fletch’s death was a real shock and like so many grieved his passing, I always laughed at others who cried when Michael Jackson or Prince died but understood exactly why, when Fletch died. I couldn’t believe that I’d feel that emotion but we all lost someone we know and care for deeply but without really knowing them but his part in DM meant possibly the end of DM but if not the end, it’d certainly be different, not the same, just like when Alan left. We saw them again in NY last October at the Staples centre ( boy what a set list,!) and our youngest brother Lee who also now lives in NZ also went but we took our wives with us and had an awesome time. Paul the lucky bugger just like in 2017 has travelled extensively to see the boys and he’s seen them 7 times this tour, his last gig being in Budapest. Sometimes I wish I still lived in the UK but only when Depeche are on tour! So probably like U, I do hope this isn’t the end and that Martin and Dave in 4-5 years decide to do it all again. Life without their creative genius and dark but beautiful music just wouldn’t be the same but we have wonderful memories because of them. So yes I am a devotee.

It must have been so awesome to see DM way back in those days. Being from a rural town in the US I didn’t even hear DM until People Are People Hit the charts but was hooked from then on. It’s awesome that you have gotten to see them so many times! I hope Dave & Martin will decide to tour again, but I’m so grateful for their music and incredible shows. I think for all of us Devotees their music is the soundtrack of our lives.

Like so many , the soundtrack of my life , and my go to play list. DM are probably the most underrated band of their time . Now I think their natural home is a stadium stage. I have been lucky to see them live many times in both the U.K. and in Europe. Berlin’s Olympic stadium last year was spectacular but the best gig so far has to be their concert supporting the Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall in 2010. Seeing Alan Wilder join Martin Gore on stage was magical.

Obsessed with the Devotional tour. I've been binge-watching the Devotional Tour on YouTube, (seems like the stop at Barcelona), just love it! While "In Your Room", Dave throws himself to the crowd, what a moment! He just goes freely and has an evil grin when he goes back to the stage, I wonder who got to keep the shirt he was wearing!

  2. Is devotional the best DM tour? : r/depechemode

Absolutely, the best era. Devotional is a fantastic album. But there is a lot behind the curtain that broke the band. Dave was very high on drugs during the filming and at times gets lines wrong. The tour caused Fletch depression for him to leave the tour, and still got paid as if he was in your.
