Digital Nomad life: Essentials for Working and Traveling Anywhere

February 3, 2022

Are you dreaming of a life as a digital nomad, where you can travel the world while working from exotic locations? You’ve got the wanderlust, you’ve set up your online workspace, but are you ready to hit the road? Not quite yet!

Before embarking on your nomadic journey, there are crucial aspects to consider, from legalities to finances and practicalities. Fear not, as I’m here to guide you through building your ultimate nomad’s travel kit, ensuring a seamless transition to your new lifestyle.

As thrilling as it may sound, being a digital nomad comes with its fair share of challenges. From working outdoors in unpredictable weather to hunting for decent internet signals, you’ll encounter hurdles along the way. But fret not; these experiences are part of the adventure!

Surprisingly, free WiFi can be found in the most unexpected places. While London may pose challenges, remote locations like a mountain in Croatia might offer seamless connectivity, as I discovered during my time in Krka national park, with the most amazing waterfalls and definitely worth checking out here …)

Your Nomad Travelers Kit

digital nomad travel

First and foremost, your travel kit should encompass more than just work essentials. Since the goal is to explore new destinations and cultures, prioritize comfort and versatility in your packing list.

Selecting the right backpack is paramount for a digital nomad. Opt for a durable, spacious backpack with features such as breathable mesh, padded straps, and ample pockets. Consider versatile options like convertible backpacks that transition seamlessly from casual outings to work mode. Investing in a high-quality backpack ensures longevity and functionality, such as models from sustainable brands like Elk or The RealReal.

Look for designs that accommodate essential electronics like laptops, chargers, and USB drives while prioritizing comfort during long journeys. Concealed pockets are invaluable for storing important documents such as passports securely yet accessible. Additionally, convertible bags often offer flexibility in airline travel, optimizing space and convenience.

A compact, quick-drying towel is indispensable for nomadic life. Opt for microfiber towels renowned for their portability and rapid drying capabilities. Whether you’re caught in a sudden downpour or need to wipe surfaces during your travels, a microfiber towel ensures practicality without occupying excessive space in your luggage. I use one like this one here

Capsule Wardrobe

Traveling light is key to hassle-free nomadic living. Embrace a capsule wardrobe with versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. Opt for wrinkle-resistant fabrics like modal and jersey to minimize the need for ironing.

Avoid bulky adventure clothing and opt for chic, functional pieces that blend seamlessly with local culture. Utilize accessories like scarves to elevate your look while staying comfortable on the road.

You are moving around consistently, and it gets pretty tiresome lugging around extra things and weight very quickly.

As a digital nomad I travel with only a backpack and carry on luggage, this keeps things light and easy and saves me a tonne of money. I am able to purchase discount airline tickets, move on and off public transport easily with just these two items.

In keeping clothes to a minimum, you will need to create a travel capsule wardrobe. A capsule collection is a small selection of clothing that can be can be worn multiple ways and mixed and match with the other pieces in that collection.

When create a capsule wardrobe, Keep the colour palette simple, stick to 3 to 4 colourway, although it does not need to be boring. Use accessories such as a scarf or a wrap to lift or style the look. Wraps are great as they can double up on the plane as a blanket or for added warmth when out at night.

It is possible to look good traveling and working as a digital nomad, you just need to be a little more careful and selective with your choices and besides you want to fit in with the local culture not stand out!

Steer clear of adventure clothing as nothing screams tourist. See this post for some ideas on capsule collections and building a travel wardrobe. Ideally you want to choose things that don’t need to be ironed, fabrics such as modal, jersey, viscose are easy care, can be easily hand washed or put on a quick cycle in a washing machine. Blended cottons are good as well and are affordable. Steer clear on linen, although a gorgeous fabric, it creases very easily and looks terrible without ironing .

Rolling your clothes is a great way of saving space in your luggage. See this post on getting the most out of your limited space when traveling or this post for the solo traveler. When selecting packing cubes I find that cubes with a mesh side for breathability best, it can see the contents of each cube without the need to open every pack. See here for ones I like to use.

Kindle or Ipad

A Kindle is an incredibly useful gadget to take with you on holiday or nomadic travel, it will give you infinite reading material while taking up barely any luggage space. The best part is that it is half the price of an apple Ipad, and some even are capable of running movies, apps, games, and music.

For those wanting a little more grunt for their dollar, the Ipad is a useful choice with a touchscreen, color, wifi and web capability for a lightweight reader on the go.

Documents and Practical Considerations

Before embarking on your nomadic adventure, address essential logistical aspects to ensure a smooth journey.

Travel Insurance

Secure comprehensive travel insurance to safeguard your health, belongings, and activities during your travels. Digital nomad-specific providers like World Nomads offer tailored coverage for extended trips, providing peace of mind wherever you roam.

Bills and Mail

Set up automated bill payments and digital invoices to manage finances while away. Minimize paper mail by opting for digital communication channels and temporary cancellations of non-essential services like magazine subscriptions.

Research visa requirements, residency regulations, and tax obligations relevant to your destination countries. Ensure compliance with governmental guidelines and anticipate potential bureaucratic processes to mitigate travel disruptions.

Phone

Prioritize mobile connectivity by exploring international roaming options or investing in local SIM cards for cost-effective data and communication access. Optimize data usage strategies to navigate varying connectivity landscapes while minimizing expenses.

The best travel sim card for us was through Simcorner . The sim was delivered to our address before we left home and valid for 30 days of travel from activation date. We purchase several to last for months at a comparable cost to our home mobile. It comes with unlimited calsl and data in which you can get additional data for slightly higher cost.

House Care

Implement measures to safeguard your residence during extended absences, such as arranging plant care or utilizing remote monitoring systems for enhanced security. Explore innovative solutions like house swapping or Airbnb hosting to offset housing costs and ensure property maintenance during your travels.

We rented our house with Airbnb, so this helped with the cost of the trip and went toward paying our housing costs whilst we were away. See the post how to travel hack with house swapping for some ideas). Sign up to become an Airbnb host here

Your Travel Documents Pack

Compile essential travel documents, including passport copies, boarding passes, and accommodation confirmations, in both digital and hardcopy formats. Distribute duplicates strategically to mitigate loss or theft risks while ensuring accessibility throughout your journey.

Remember to keep the copies separate to your passport in another bag.

By curating a comprehensive traveler’s kit encompassing these essential elements, you’ll be well-equipped to embark on your digital nomad adventure with confidence and convenience. Prioritize functionality, adaptability, and efficiency to optimize your nomadic lifestyle and embrace the freedom of remote work and travel.

Roy Buzzelli

nomad travel kit

I have had nomad internet for a few months now. After a couple of minor bumps in the beginning that were taken care of quickly I'm very happy with their service. We have 2 tvs, computer, 2 tablets and 2 cell phones. We can use multiple devices at the same time with no problem. Prior to getting Nomad internet I spent lots of $$$ and didn't slove my problem. For people that are traveling rvers Nomad Air with Nomad travel plan is a good alternative to other plans.

Derrick Ray

I just got it set up a couple of days ago and so far I am ecstatic about the service. Moved out in to the east mountains of NM (east of Albuquerque) a bit ago and have been through several different services. Most of them gave mediocre at best speeds and were wildly inconsistent and required resetting the device at least daily but often multiple times a day. So far with Nomad I have excellent speed and am not constantly rebooting.

Karen Adams

I have Nomad and love it, tried Hughes, Verizon MiFi, Synergy, Solis, Skyroam, attempted Starlink (big $$$ and can't have trees, not mobile) Nomad is the only one that allows me to stream, connect multiple devices; I have the travel plan so we can take it Rv'ing. Try it you have nothing to lose - no contracts, no data limits ... They now have different management, 24/7 call service, online chat w/repair, and more advanced equipment.

Lisa Duchac-Helland

just did a speed test. Download is 155 mbps and upload is 19.1 mbps.maps. We need to have internet for work and Nomad has been amazing for work, streaming TV, gaming and our alexa. We have used it in several states with no issues. Extremely happy with the service and that there is no set up or take down on travel days and we don't have to worry about any obstructions.

I just got mine, less then a week. I had some issues getting it connected, but once I got it, it has been awesome, again I have not had it too long and I hope it continues to work this good all the time because so far it amazing and I have not been able to find anything that works in my area. I'll keep you all posted

James Hilmers

I just got it.....So far it works great. Wish I had found Nomad sooner. There are no cable options where I live, only satellite, which is too costly for me and it's limited. What they offered me for a month would only last 20 to 25 days.

Jennilyn Silas

Had ours for about a week. We live out in the Sticks. We've never found a good affordable internet service till now. We love our Nomad Internet.

Stephan Brennan

I'm in. A pit and if you got Any kind of cell signal this is the one to go for. I like I said I'm in a pit and less then a quarter mi away from me. And they say they have nothing in my area. I contacted nomad. Thank the big guy I can now watch a complete movie through net flicks without buffering..... - eg: and I e got two neighbors connected ... Without buffering.... Knock on wood but my opinion is its GREAT NO PROBLEM AT ALL... TECH SUPPORT REAL GOOD. THANK YOU NOMAD...

Justin Silas

Best internet I've found out here in bfe. No throttling and I'm gaming and streaming with no problems. Large game updates that are like 165 gigs may take a day. Besides that I'm loving. I was about ready to move because of the lack of internet. I'm good now

Have had this for roughly 10 days now in upstate NY where home WiFi isn't available and it's been great. Kids can stream and game, I can game, all is well. Thank you Nomad

Holly Hubenthal

Absolutely love nomad internet. We have been with them for almost 2 years now no complaint. Our family uses a ton of Internet never have an issue.

Digital Nomad: The Ultimate Travel Kit

20.06.2023 | Reading time: 10 minutes Author: Lowepro

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a digital nomad, there is no better time than now. Countries such as Croatia, Dubai and Barbados are now offering Digital Nomad Visas. This makes it easier than ever to pack and move to a new country at a moment's notice. As long as you have a laptop and a good internet connection, you're good to go.

Waking up in a different country every few weeks with new people and places to experience is very exciting. It also means you need to carry your entire life (and work) wherever you go. To help you move between destinations easily and comfortably, we’ve put together this ultimate guide to nomad luggage.

Digital Nomad: The Ultimate Travel Kit

Digital nomads are not a uniform group and they come from various professions. Some might be creatives, like photographers. Others might be software engineers or virtual assistants. Their travelling interests might vary as well. Some would prefer to roam around cities, while others will go on week-long treks.

That’s why no one packing list will work for everyone. But some essentials are worth considering, no matter your job or destination.

  • Laptop travel bag . Since the digital nomad’s livelihood relies on their laptop, it has to stay safe. A bag like the Tahoe BP 150 is water-resistant, padded and can even fit a DSLR with lenses.
  • Universal adapter . Buy one that can be used anywhere in the world and has multiple ports, so you can charge all your devices at once.
  • High-wattage power bank . Invest in a portable battery that can charge your laptop while you work. You never know when you’ll get stranded without a power socket.
  • Noise-cancelling headphones. You’ll be grateful for them on busy flights. Or when you have a deadline and the hostel is having a party.
  • Gear organiser. To make sure none of your cables or memory cards go missing, you can get something like this GearUp Pouch .
  • Eye mask. Unlike regular holidays, sleep is more important when you have work to get done. This can help you get some shut-eye on trains, planes and buses.
  • Reusable water bottle. In case you don’t already have one that you carry everywhere. Hydration matters, especially in warmer climates.

GoNOMAD Travel: The Alternative Travel Network Since 2000

Check here regularly on our Media Kit for the latest information about GoNOMAD.com, the alternative travel portal where you can read fresh travel articles and accurate destination guides, browse hundreds of tour company listings, and buy air, rail, hotels, cars, and anything else you’ll need to take your own journey.

One thing about GoNOMAD’s Editor, Max Hartshorne. He covers the destinations more extensively than most of his fellow travel journalists. Coverage includes podcast episodes on the GoNOMAD Travel Podcast, radio show appearances mentioning the hosts, feature articles, and a large amount of social media coverage on platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Our editor meets with a large group of travel content creators again in 2022, first at the TBEX in Marbella, Spain and then at Traverse 22, in Brno Czech Republic, a similar association of travel bloggers and videographers, who gathered to share ideas and conversation. Max Hartshorne spoke at each of these events.

These gatherings give us a chance to meet many new writers and compare notes about our enterprise, and our new Travel Podcast, and meet with advertisers and sponsors in the travel industry.

Traverse22

The GoNOMAD Travel Podcast made its long-awaited debut in June 2023 and we are about to hit 140 episodes. The format is short-form, emphasizing the interesting aspects and details of our latest travel stories.

Episodes include All About Railpasses, What We Can Learn from Berbers,  The Mosque in Tabuk Saudi Arabia and many more. We keep them to 4-7 minutes to provide a short jolt of travel inspiration to our listeners.

August 2021

Traffic to the site climbs to higher than ever levels as the world collectively recovers from the pandemic and slowly, travel resumes. Plans are made to again sponsor World Travel Market in London in November and travel plans for London, to the IPW conference in Las Vegas, and to Traverse 21 in Mallorca Spain are on the books. These meetings are an important way we continue to keep our name out there with travelers.

We have increased our RV Travel section with lots of new stories about RV adventures, and we also created a new section of timely and relevant travel articles called COVID TALES . Traffic dipped in April 2020, but it’s rebounded and now we are seeing longer visit durations and a steady 145,000 unique monthly visitors.

GoNOMAD is a media sponsor for World Travel Market, the biggest travel trade show in the world, held each year in London. GoNOMAD will help promote WTM on all of its channels and participate in seminars for the travel industry. This partnership is similar to what we have done for many years with the NY Times Travel Show.

Max Hartshorne joins hundreds of travel bloggers in Trentino, Italy, for Traverse19, where he was a featured speaker about travel writing and the importance of good writing for all social media influencers, travel writers, and publishers.

GoNOMAD is recognized for another year as being one of the top ten travel websites out of more than 1600 others. This is a very important combination of statistics without any bias, that gives the edge to older sites with more recognition from both travel writers and the travel industry.

August 2018

GoNOMAD is ranked number 4 among the all-time top travel websites, according to a combination of key ranking factors including MOZ’s Domain Authority, TrustFlow, and Klout. We are in a high-class company here! Details

GoNOMAD goes to WordPress!  With a completely new design that is responsive and flexible, we set out to a new adventure in publishing. We are continuing our partnerships with major travel brands. Max Hartshorne presented at the TBEX Travel Bloggers Exchange and the PRSA Public Relations Society of America Travel Conference. He also attended the USTA’s IPW Show in New Orleans in June 2016 and met many of his travel colleagues and friends.

GoNOMAD continues our business partnership, the 360 Travel Network , an association of three sites and seven travel blogs, running content marketing campaigns for major brands like Trivago.com, Allianz Travel Insurance, and Enterprise Rent-a-car, providing a full range of branding using display advertising, as well as content marketing, and a large-scale social media promotional effort.

Clients are very pleased with the results and both renew. Website traffic has been building steadily, now at 118,000 unique monthly visitors and 300,000 monthly pageviews.

A completely new mobile site was launched in March 2015, so every visitor no matter what device they are using can easily read our stories, all built for the smaller screen. Editor Max Hartshorne speaks at TBEX in Cancun, Mexico to travel bloggers about how GoNOMAD uses virtual assistants, student interns, and outside sales staff.

Paul Shoul and Max Hartshorne spoke again at the NY Times Travel Show about travel writing and photography, the hall was fully packed for the presentation.

Editor Max Hartshorne is invited to speak at the Public Relations Society of America ‘s travel conference in Tampa about best practices working with online media, joined by editors from AARP Magazine and AOL Travel.

He also makes a presentation at the New  York Times Travel Show with photographer Paul Shoul about shooting travel photos, to a standing-room-only crowd at the Javits Center.

We publish our 24th Plane Reader Ebook, about Australia, and site traffic begins to rebound with the new content management system in place.

GoNOMAD launches a completely new redesign and automates all of its publishing to the Joomla platform. This means faster publishing of stories and much easier navigation, as well as new features like video and better social media integration.

Stories can now be posted from the road or anywhere and the editor is no longer chained to the office. It has been a labor of extreme proportions–the project started with a meeting with webmaster Rich Roth of Greenfield’s TNR Global in 2012.

Editor Max Hartshorne spoke at a panel in Dijon France about social media and our writers fanned out to places around the world writing stories. We will be continuing our streak of Plane Readers with new titles coming out monthly, including Canada, Thailand and New Zealand. Our website traffic is rebounding at 90,000 unique visitors per month, and with the new code, we expect it to grow significantly. The site is also very attractive when viewed on an iPad or other tablets.

October 2012

We have closed our cafe but we are roaring into e-publishing, with eighteen titles already on Amazon, BN and iTunes, and more to come! We are rolling out a newly designed GoNOMAD Travel that will be easier to navigate and contain even more amazing travel content. New features will be added monthly, a very exciting development. See all of our Plane Readers here.

Editor Max Hartshorne spoke to travel bloggers in July 2012 at TBEX , the travel bloggers convention in Colorado. He continues his speaking with a New York Times Travel show appearance in January 2013, and to artists at the Creative Economy Summit in Turners Falls, MA.

Our new partnerships with Wanderlust and Lipstick.com and PerceptiveTravel.com have created very successful marketing plans for hotels, airlines, and other travel clients. We are excited about this growth and look forward to new ideas in mobile technology, our new site will be very mobile friendly.

December 2009

As we come to the close of another year, we prepare to exhibit at a second major Travel Show, this will be the Boston Globe Travel Show in February 2010. We will join our friends at Bootsnall.com to offer a seminar to travel professionals about using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and blogs to help market travel destinations. Later in February, we will return for our third year, for the New York Times Travel Show and there we will present a seminar on Travel writing for newbies and staff our own booth for three days.

Our traffic is at a record–199,000 monthly unique visitors–and we have never had so many excellent articles to publish. The word is spreading fast about the quality of our editorial and more and more people are finding us a useful place to begin travel planning.

The cafe is going great guns, full of neighbors and travelers enjoying panini, homemade soups, coffee and conversation. In the works are a radio program to be aired three times a week on WHMP-AM, and a cable Television program to be aired on the local cable channel.

As usual, we have two interns joining us as we have done since 2005!

August 2009

GoNOMAD Travel editor Max Hartshorne is quoted along with Pauline Frommer, Peter Greenberg, and other travel experts for a round up of summer travel ideas in READERS DIGEST magazine. This fall he may be getting a chance to write a blog for a local newspaper. Max and Kent St. John regularly go on travel radio shows to talk about their stories. Audio podcasts can be heard for many of these.

Three interns join the ranks at GoNOMAD, contributing articles, doing travel research, writing blogs and helping us promote the website. They also traveled, going on story assignments to interesting places around the world. Many of our newest articles are set closer to home, in New England and other US destinations.

January 2009

Going into our third year at the GoNOMAD Cafe and bringing on many new features and a new catalog of exciting trips and tours, we have been seeing great traffic in the cafe and on the website! In our ninth year on the web, we’re working on a redesign of the whole site. We continue to get the word out with our second year at the NY Times Travel Show exhibiting and developing a new TV show about our brand of travel.

December 2008

It’s been a great year for GoNOMAD, beginning with sending writers around the globe in search of stories. We were invited to go to Iran by the government tourism officials and joined 120 other professionals for a tour of Iran’s great cities.

We began the year with the New York Times Travel Show, where we had a booth and met many of our readers and fans during the large travel trade show.

During the show Kent St. John, Max Hartshorne and guest Matthew Link offered a three person look at how to become a travel writer. We gave tips for dealing with editors and how to write for publications to a large audience at the NY show.

GoNOMAD has also will be speaking for the second year on Search Engine Optimizing for Travel sites at the Boston Globe Travel Show in February 2009.

The GoNOMAD Cafe celebrates one year in business and adds sandwiches, new coffee drinks, and salads to the menu. A larger new cappuccino maker joins an industrial-sized oven to allow many more exciting foods to be served.

The cafe has become the hub of the town, a gathering place for many folks young and old. GoNOMAD.com counts 340,000 unique monthly visitors exploring the website and our CPC, CPA, and CPM ad programs bear generous fruit. Internet Advertising Has Arrived.

Content arrangements with Tribune Publishing and other newspaper companies provide added publicity plus a new revenue stream. Yahoo Travel links 400 of GoNOMAD’s articles as expert guides on their site.

February 2006

GoNOMAD.com owner Max Hartshorne opens the new GoNOMAD Café in bustling downtown South Deerfield, where customers can get coffee and pastries, check their email, and surf the web. The new café features five pcs as well as wireless access. Though it was a fun idea at the time and provided a wonderful gathering place in town, this was perhaps one of the worst financial decisions ever made by a web publisher. Never again.

December 2005

A crew from WGBY Springfield visits GoNOMAD’s offices to shoot a segment for their series “Making it Here ” that was aired in May 2006.

August 2005

More than 7500 readers visit GoNOMAD.com every day.

February 2005

GoNOMAD.com emerges from the cellar! The website officially moves out of editor Max Hartshorne’s basement to a spacious office at 14A Sugarloaf Street in picturesque South Deerfield, Massachusetts, next to Charsky Insurance and Fisher’s Garage.

In February of 2005 GoNOMAD.com hangs its shingle outside the new office at 14A Sugarloaf Street in South Deefield, Massachusetts.

GoNOMAD.com is written up in the  Daily Hampshire Gazette .”If you approach something with real passion and dedication and think about it all the time, and work on it until 1 am,” Hartshorne told Staff Writer Nick Grabbe, “eventually you’re going to succeed. I’m already succeeding by traveling, editing, and teaching people how to work with the Web. And I’m having a ball.”

January 2004

GoNOMAD.com Editor Max Hartshorne, Senior Travel Editor Kent St. John, Travel Writers Cindy Bigras and Lisa St. John, and Sales Director Joe O’Rourke staff an exhibit at the  Adventure Expo  at the Javits Center in New York City. 22,000 people attend.

F ebruary 2002

Max Hartshorne leaves Transitions Abroad magazine and purchases the two-year-old GoNOMAD Travel, which had been created in Vermont by Lauryn Axelrod and already had a base of 65,000 unique monthly visitors. It was ready to grow, and for the first two years it was a part-time labor of love.

Nomad II closes doors after 41 years

Jack Sussman, right, shakes hands with President Harry S. Truman during a visit to Oklahoma City. [Photo Provided by John Bennett]

Nomad II Italian-American Grill, 7301 N May Ave, closed Tuesday according to an announcement on its Facebook page.

Nomad II was the last restaurant opened by legendary restaurateur, gambler and rapscallion Jack “Sussy” Sussman in 1975. Rick Bailey, whose family has owned the place since Sussman died in 1980, was its last owner.

The closing marks the fall of another prominent domino in Oklahoma City dining history.

In December, Boulevard Cafeteria closed, marking the end of an era for local, independent cafeteria concepts that flourished for more than five decades.

The Coach House, Oklahoma City's culinary vanguard since 1985, closed in February, and earlier this month iconic drive-in Charcoal Oven closed after 58 years.

Sussman partnered with nightclub owner Jake Samara in 1947 to open Sussy's Italian Restaurant, which is generally believed to be the first restaurant in Oklahoma City to sell pizza.

Sussman and Samara did so well, they opened numerous restaurants and started frozen pizza and boil-in-the-bag spaghetti businesses.

The Sussy's legend

Samara was unafraid to work the fringes of propriety in pre-World War II Oklahoma City. The Central High School graduate attended business college, became a bookkeeper for Armour Meat Co. and boxed for 50 cents a fight at the Stockyards Coliseum to save money to open his own business.

“I sold the bar for $800 and bought the old Quality Barbecue place on NE 23 Street,” he once told former Oklahoman and Journal Record columnist Max Nichols. “I changed it to Jake's Barbecue.”

The place went from Jake's Barbecue to Jake's Nightclub and started bringing in touring acts. A program aired live from Jake's Nightclub on KTOK radio in 1940. Brushes with the law were more common than not for Samara. In 1939, he was cited for operating a slot machine in the club.

After changing the club into Jake's Cowshed, his license was revoked in 1947 for allowing dancing in an establishment where beer was sold. So he reopened under the name Jamboree Supper Club, which required members to pay a $32.12 initiation fee and $7.31 per month in dues. Privileges included dining, dancing and a bartender to mix drinks. Samara also owned the swanky Derby Club at 3133 NE 23, which also fought raids for selling booze in a dance hall.

The Jamboree featured striptease acts, which was sugar to a fly for Jack Sussman. In an interview with The Oklahoman in 1999, Jake's brother Mike Samara said Sussman's wife was an exotic dancer at the Jamboree Club.

She also happened to be Italian. So, at her request, Sussman and Jake Samara struck up a partnership to open an Italian restaurant at 629 NE 23, across the parking lot from the club.

“Jack, since you're Jewish and I'm Lebanese, we need an Italian name,” Jake Samara said. “We'll name the place Sussy's, and I'll start calling you Sussy.”

Pizza, pasta come to town

Mike Samara said most of the recipes came from Jack's wife, and cheeses were imported from Italy to ensure quality. In that 1999 story, Dot Curry said she went to work at Sussy's when it opened and worked in the kitchen for the next 20 years.

She said Sussy brought a chef in from New York City, a native of Naples, Italy, to train the staff how to make pizza, antipasto plates, Italian salad bowls, lasagna, Italian meatballs, ravioli, veal Scallopini and chicken Cacciatori — all made with Sussy's original sauce.

Pizza was not only exotic and delicious, it was easily packed for take out, which increased its popularity exponentially.

Jake Samara and Jack Sussman had a hit on their hands, but they didn't have it easy. On top of frequent brushes with the law, Sussman was shot in the leg during a 1953 robbery of the original Sussy's by escaped convict Robert Fout.

That didn't stop Sussy's Italian Restaurant No. 2 from opening July 6, 1956, at 9014 N Western Ave., where Baker's Printing stands. That same year, they began selling frozen versions of Sussy's pizza and boil-in-the-bag spaghetti and meatballs.

Later that year, Sussman announced plans to open a grand, new restaurant and club called the Sirloin Strip Steakhouse. Sussman told The Oklahoman it would have capacity for 300 divided among three dining rooms in the 7,700-square-feet space that included a large lobby, lounge and stainless-steel kitchen and an exterior of pink brick.

By the time the building was completed, Sussy decided to call the restaurant Jack Sussy's Italian-American Restaurant and Steakhouse. By the 1960s, he carved his grand property into units, adding a liquor store and The Nomad Club to the space.

He opened a Sussy's in Norman, on State Highway 9 in the old Redwood Inn, in 1959. Sussman expanded his investments in the early 1960s with Jack Sussy's Nomad Apartments at 3100 NW 36 and a pre-civil rights complex for blacks at 832 NE 8.

Burning down the house

In November 1966, arsonists did heavy damage to the building, but even worse damage to Sussman.

The arsonists implicated Sussman, leading to first-degree arson charges that went to trial. However, the judge ended the proceedings in a mistrial in September 1967.

In the end, Sussman avoided conviction but found himself financially crippled. He rallied to open Sussy's Tally-Ho Restaurant at NE 36 and Lincoln in 1968, featuring pizza, spaghetti, chili, tacos, hot dogs, burgers and pies. A few months later, the building that burned was sold at auction for $100,000.

Sussman opened a Sussy's at SW 24 and Robinson, with Club Stage Door, which featured go-go dancers, in the back in 1967. He opened the seafood concept, Captain's Table in 1969. He also had a stake in Casa Mia Italian Restaurant in 1969, which featured strip bar Club Barbarella, in a location next-door to the present-day Red Dog Saloon. He hosted dinner at SPQR Italian Restaurant in Quail Plaza in the early 1970s. Mario's in Casady Square sold Jack Sussy's Famous Pizza plus lasagna, manicotti and steaks in 1973.

Nomad born, Sussman dies

In 1975, The Oklahoman printed an ad that read: “The Original Jack Sussy Now at 73rd and N May would appreciate a visit from my old and new friends.”

Visits to the new place, which would eventually be known as Nomad II Italian American Grill, obviously were mostly from old friends, but maybe not those he sought.

Sussman was arrested in September of that year, accused of conducting illicit gambling at his apartment on NW 56. He died in 1980, leaving behind three Sussy's concepts. His place on Lincoln was razed in 1993.

Bailey's Nomad II carried on Sussy's culinary tradition with fried pepperoni pizza, The Fleetwood, veal Marsala and fried chicken livers for the next 36 years.

Friends and fans of Nomad II and Jack Sussy's other restaurants, I would love to hear from you. Email [email protected] to share your memories of the Sussy legend.
