Visit Hel, Poland – the Gem of the Baltic Sea

Every time I mention to my foreign friends that they should visit Hel, Poland, I get weird looks. But despite the funny name this really is one of the must-visit places in Poland if you are looking for a seaside getaway.

Wide and sandy beaches, nice town, beautiful forest, unique location, chilled vibe, and some interesting historical remnants – there are so many solid reasons to go to Hel. Since I remember it’s been my favorite place on the Polish Baltic Sea coast and every time I visit Hel I’m more than happy. This place never disappoints.

Whether you are looking for some fine day trips from Gdansk or you want to spend a few relaxing days at the seaside – Hel is a perfect place to go to!

Where is Hel, Poland

The town of Hel is located at the very end of Poland, at the tip of the Hel Peninsula – a narrow, around 35 km long stretch of land north of Gdansk .

This is a symbolic beginning of Poland, you can even find the monument dedicated to this fact at the beach in Hel. What makes Hel’s location special is that the town is surrounded by the Baltic Sea from three sides.

How to get to Hel

Getting to Hel is actually pretty easy and you have a variety of options to choose from.

My preferable mode of transportation is train – all year long there are direct trains from Gdynia (the journey takes less than 1,5 hours), in the summertime, there are also connections from other cities in Poland.

The train route to Hel is really scenic, it goes mostly through beautiful forests but occasionally you can admire the Baltic Sea or Puck Bay, or both at the same time (in the narrowest place the Hel Peninsula is only 200 meters wide).

Another popular option to reach Hel is to take the boat from Gdansk, Sopot , or Gdynia. You can find the details, including the schedule and prices here .

You can also take the bus (including famous bus no 666) or drive to Hel but it can be a nightmare in the summertime when the traffic jams happen often. So honestly, the train is your best option.

Where to stay in Hel

Since Hel is such a popular destination there are plenty of accommodation options for each taste. I would still recommend booking a place to stay in Hel in advance, especially in the summer season. Here you can find the best Hel accommodations.

The best time to visit Hel

In the summertime Hel, just like all the other popular seaside destinations in Poland, can get really packed so if you are not so much into tourist crowds it’s better to avoid the place in July or August. However, if you are looking for the typical summer madness with all its attractions this is the best time for visiting Hel.

My favorite time to go to Hel is either late spring (May-beginning of June) or early autumn (September-October). The weather is already/still good but the number of tourists significantly drops and you can properly enjoy the place.

But Hel is beautiful all year long, even in the winter, especially when the beach is covered in snow. So no matter when you go to Hel you will find it beautiful for sure.

A brief history of Hel

The first settlement, the so-called Old Hel, dates back to the 9th century. Over the years it developed into an important place in the region, mostly due to its location and fishing.

The town was even granted city rights but after a few centuries, when Gdansk’s importance grew, all the privileges of Hel were withdrawn. Old Hel was located around 1,5 km away from the current town but it was destroyed by fire and eventually flooding.

The current town was established when Old Hel still existed and that’s where inhabitants moved when Old Hel fell into difficulties. But the place started regaining its importance only at the end of the 19th century (it was under German rule then) when the fishing harbor was opened here. That’s also when the town also gained popularity among tourists.

When Hel was returned to Poland after World War 1, the area again developed rapidly, especially after the railway line was opened in 1922.

The peninsula became the fortified area in 1936 and Hel was home to the one of two main naval bases of the Polish Navy. After the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, Hel managed to defend for over a month. Until the end of WW2 Hel was occupied by Germany until it was returned to Poland again.

Things to do in Hel

Even if Hel is a small town with a population of just over 3.000 inhabitants, the place is full of attractions.

The main reason to visit Hel is obviously the seaside. That’s where you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Poland (or even on the Baltic Sea coast) – long, wide and sandy.

In the summertime, they are obviously packed with tourists but if you don’t mind walking a bit toward Jurata (the next settlement on the peninsula, some 10 km away from Hel) you will easily find more secluded areas.

Until recently the very tip of the Hel Peninsula was a military area, closed to the public, but now you can easily walk to the metaphorical beginning of Poland. And it’s such a beautiful place, with only a vast sea surrounding you from three sides.

Since Hel was such a heavily militarized area you will find plenty of remnants of war infrastructure in the forest all over the town. You can explore some abandoned bunkers and watchtowers or visit the museum dedicated to the defense of Hel. When walking in the forest (and these are really beautiful in Hel!) you never know what you can find.

The center of the town is really pleasant with some old houses (some of them from the 19th century) along the main street – Wiejska. That’s also where you will find numerous restaurants, cafes, and fast food points as well as souvenir shops.

Near the center, on the side of Puck Bay, you will find the harbor and probably the biggest of all the Hel attractions – the seal sanctuary. The popular aquarium is part of the marine institute of Gdansk University who focuses on protecting the seal population in this part of the Baltic Sea. Visitors can attend the feeding of seals which is always great fun.

If you would like to look from above at the Baltic Sea, the town of Hel, the peninsula, and even Gdansk you can go up to the top of the lighthouse. It’s located in the forest more or less on the way from the town to the beach and offers some great views of the surrounding area.

The lighthouse itself dates back to 1942 however the first structure was built here already in the 17th century.

And once you are done with visiting Hel you can go to other places along the peninsula that are really pleasant too: Jurata, Jastarnia, Kuźnica, Chałupy or Władysławowo. You can easily take the train to get to them or simply walk along the beach.

Final thoughts on visiting Hel

I might be biased here as I spent so much time in Hel since I was a kid and always loved it but I really believe this is the best place to visit on the Polish seaside. Not only it has beautiful nature but also offers plenty of attractions, especially for fans of military spots.

And while the place can be a bit overwhelming in the summer, if you visit Hel off-season you will easily enjoy the place. Even if you can only come here as a day trip from Gdansk it’s still worth the journey!

this is fantastic information! i am going to gdansk in august and want to spend three days at sea too. since it is high season i am a bit reluctant to stay in hel, even though it looks beautiful. i am more into beaches that are not that packed but still beautiful. do you have any nice recommendation at the baltic sea?

You still should consider Hel Peninsula. Beaches near towns can be packed but you can walk a bit further along the beach and it gets so much better. And the beach there is so beautiful, wide and sandy. You will enjoy it for sure. Have a great time!

Hel (Poland): 17 Places To See & Things to Do (Local’s Guide)

Looking for attractions to see and things to do in Hel (Poland)? Hel is a famous town at the tip of the Hel Peninsula – a paradise for kite surfers, beachcombers and history buffs. The town is well-known for its sandy beaches on the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Gdansk (Zatoka Gdańska), which meet at the Hel Peninsula, a must-see when visiting Hel. It’s not just beaches and the sea – you will have a lot to to do here even in poorer weather.

The tourist life of Hel takes place along Seaside Boulevard (Bulwar Nadmorski) and Morska Street . Children love the famous Seals Sanctuary (Fokarium) and occupy the unique Fisheries Museum (Muzeum Rybołówstwa). In the forests around, military monuments from World War II and museums await.

Although Hel is one of the most visited places by the Polish seaside , you’ll find peace on beaches even in high season. During a train journey around the Hel Peninsula, you’ll simultaneously see the sea and the bay. In the guide, I will share 17 attractions & places to see & things to do in Hel .

1. Visit the end of Hel Peninsula (Cypel Helski), where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Gdansk

You should start your tour of Hel from the Hel Headland – a small ‘prow’ in the southern part of the town. The Hel Headland is the last point of the Hel Peninsula and the place where the “main” Baltic Sea meets the waters of the Gulf of Gdansk. The point changes position slightly depending on the water level and sea currents.

How to get to the end of Hel Peninsula? A seaside promenade leads to it. You reach it by heading south along Morska Street. The route circles over the dunes and turns into the woods, where you will return to Hel’s centre. You can go there by bicycle or use a pushchair.

Walking to the headland, you will pass the Kashubian Mound (Kopiec Kaszubów) , symbolic of the beginning of Poland. Next to it are the foundations of the former Fire Station No. 1, one of the elements of Hel’s fortifications. From the footbridge, you can walk down to the beach and reach the Headland itself and then spread out with a blanket on the beach.

The promenade overlooks the sea and ships entering the Bay of Gdansk. Along the way, you will notice several information boards with the attractions of the Hel Spit. I come here whenever I’m in Hel – sometimes as soon as I arrive by train.

2. Look for military objects from the Fortification Trail (Szlak Fortyfikacji) in the woods

From the promenade by the Hel Peninsula, I recommend you to go back to town along Kuracyjna Street, which leads through the forest. On both sides of the street, you will see traces of the former military guarding the Hel Peninsula. Hidden in the forest are shelters, firing positions, artillery batteries and fire control points .

Many of the sites you can only see from the outside. Inside, you can visit one of the shelters with the exhibition “Macabre of the 20th Century” . Over a dozen rooms tell the dark story of the 20th-century wars. The site is run by the local activist group “Alternatywny Cypel”.

You can buy tickets to the “Makabra XX wieku” before entering the shelter . Look for an information board on Kuracyjna Street directing you to the attraction (a few dozen metres from the beach). The dark and gloomy interior may not be an ideal attraction for young children.

On the other side of Kuracyjna Street, inside another bunker, the association runs an exhibition called Morskie Tajemnice , aimed at families with children. There you will see, among other things, a large aquarium with Baltic fauna and a model of a pre-war harbour. Kids will also be able to assemble their fishing boat.

You can also walk to the well-preserved 21st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battery at entrance 66 to the beach. I recommend you rent a bike and track down the military sights on the more than 10 km long Fortification Trail (Szlak Fortyfikacji), whose main blue path starts at the railway station. Cycling is an excellent way to explore the area.

3. Visit the Seal Sanctuary (Fokarium) and learn about the habits of Baltic seals

Thick and moustachioed seals are much-loved inhabitants of the Baltic coast. They can sometimes be found in their natural habitat, near the mouth of the Vistula River on Sobieszewska Island (I went there while looking for the best holiday destinations on the Baltic), but they have another home in Hel. At the Seal Sanctuary (Fokarium Stacji Morskiej), they preserve their population in the Baltic Sea.

The Seal Sanctuary belongs to the University of Gdansk and is a tourist attraction a bit ‘by the way’. The primary aim of the Seal Sanctuary is to learn more about Baltic seals’ habits and treat those in poorer conditions . Due to harmful human activities, the number of seals is decreasing yearly.

See the website for tour details ( ticket prices and opening times – in Polish). Prepare two 5 PLN coins per person – you will need them to pass through the gates at the entrance.

I enjoyed listening to a lecture about seals (only in Polish). I recommend attending it – it takes place twice daily, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. After the talk, you can see the seal feeding and the exhibition. You can also donate to the Seal Sanctuary.

4. Check out the view from the lighthouse in Hel

Hidden in the Seaside Landscape Park (Nadmorski Park Krajobrazowy) forests is the historic lighthouse , open to tourists during the holiday season. It is the highest vantage point in Hel. You can reach the lighthouse from the town centre via Bałtycka Street, which leads through the forest.

You can buy tickets to the lighthouse in Hel at the ticket office before the entrance (you can pay by cash or card). If you prefer to avoid crowds, come here early in the day (around 10:00, and holidays around 9:00) – before the biggest groups of tourists arrive.

There are over 200 stairs leading up to the top in a spiral staircase (precisely the kind you associate with films). In high season, you will probably have to queue to get in, as the lighthouse is one of Hel’s most popular attractions.

The top of the lighthouse is a glazed viewing point – you can’t go inside to the outside platform. There is air conditioning at the top, but it’s still hot in summer. Your reward for climbing will be a view of the forest and waters surrounding the Hel Spit on three sides. And on windy days, it won’t blow in your face. 😉

5. Take a walk along the Seaside Boulevard (Bulwar Nadmorski) and Dune Park (Park Wydmowy)

When visiting Hel, take a walk along the Seaside Boulevard, which will take you to the Sealarium, the Sea Fishery Museum and the Dune Park. Get ready for a bustling atmosphere and crowds of tourists in the summer, as this is the centre of the town’s tourist life.

The Dune Park is a small park where, instead of trees, you will see dunes covered with coastal vegetation . A footbridge passes over them with several shelters and a descent to the beach. From the footbridge, you can see the Bay of Gdańsk – it is also a good spot for watching sunsets.

Parallel to the Seaside Boulevard, there are Morska and Maszopów streets with restaurants , food trucks, ice cream stalls and various shops. In high season, you sometimes have to wait a while for a free table. For good fish, check out the Stara Wędzarnia or Dorsz I Spółka.

At the end of the Boulevard, next to the entrance to the harbour and the Sea Fisheries Museum (Muzeum Rybołówstwa Morskiego), stands a statue of Neptune . Its author modelled it on a statue of Neptune from Bologna, Italy. The figure looks good with the former Evangelical Church of St Peter and St Paul in the background. The building of the former church of St Peter and St Paul now houses the Sea Fisheries Museum. The exhibition occupies the adapted interior of the 15th-century church. The building suffered damage during the Second World War but was successfully rebuilt and became a museum after the war.

Before visiting, check the museum’s website for current opening hours . The exhibition takes up several floors, but you can move between them by lift (it also takes you to the observation deck).

In the Sea Fisheries Museum in Hel, you will learn about the behind-the-scenes work of fishermen from the area . You will see, among other things, the workshop of a boat-builder, i.e. a specialist in shipbuilding; you will learn how to catch fish and see antique boats. It’s a unique opportunity to see the boats… inside the church. 😉

Also, climb the observation tower , which used to be an essential navigational point for ships coming to Hel. You get a good view of the immediate surroundings from the wooden tower – the busy harbour, the streets of Hel and the Bay of Gdansk. If you want to see more, I recommend you climb the lighthouse.

7. Look for old fishermen’s cottages on Wiejska Street

Today’s Hel is a modern holiday resort. However, it is possible to find traces of the old days when Hel was a fishing settlement with consistent and almost identical buildings. Start your search on Wiejska Street.

The history of the old fishermen’s houses on Wiejska Street dates back to the first half of the 19th century. They had characteristic features: half-timbered construction (the so-called half-timbering, i.e. wooden beams and white brick walls), gabled roofs and front walls facing the street. To distinguish them from each other, fishermen mounted wooden ornaments (so-called crowns) on the roofs.

Look at the Maszoperia restaurant at 110 Wiejska Street , housed in two historic houses. Inside, you will immediately notice the rustic décor in the atmosphere of an old fisherman’s hut with lots of wood. At Maszoperia, they serve fish and seafood. I recommend the place’s speciality, pike-perch in a delicious chanterelle sauce.

See also the building at Wiejska 78 (the seat of the Hel branch of the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association). The half-timbered structure can still be found in the contemporary-built Porpoise House at 4 Portowa St. The building used to be part of the Sea Fishery Museum but is now closed.

8. Explore military history at the Coastal Defence Museum (Muzeum Obrony Wybrzeża)

In the interwar period, tourists were not allowed to enter Hel. After Poland regained its independence, the Fortified Region of Hel was established at the peninsula’s tip (from the borders of Jurata to Hel). You can learn about the history of military Hel and the battles on the peninsula at the Museum of Coastal Defence (Muzeum Obrony Wybrzeża).

Tip : The best option is to buy a pass to visit all the sites . It also includes the Hel Museum, the Hel Railway Museum with a train ride, the Fire Control Tower, and the Hel Peninsula battery. You can use it in a few days (there is no validity period). Look for “KARNET na wszystkie obiekty” on the website to check the price.

The museum tells the story of the construction of the Fortified Region, the German expansion during World War II and the activities of the Polish military during the communist era. It occupies the former buildings of a German artillery battery, which adds to the authentic atmosphere. The MOW is part of the Hel Museum Complex (see map of facilities ).

The facility is named after Zbigniew Przybyszewski, who commanded the heroic defence of Hel in September 1939 (the beginning of the Second World War), which lasted over a month. Here you will visit historical exhibitions and see old military equipment. You can find free parking along the main road leading to Hel.

9. Take a ride on the narrow-gauge train to the Hel Railway Museum (Muzeum Kolei Helskich)

The military presence on the Hel Peninsula and around Hel required good logistics. The coastal forests were covered by a network of tracks by which supplies were to reach essential points in the Fortified Region. You can learn more about the significance of Hel’s narrow-gauge railways at the Hel Railway Museum.

Start your sightseeing adventure by riding on the narrow-gauge military railway from gun emplacement B2 (Bruno). You can also reach the Hel Railway Museum on foot (by walking along the main road to Hel) or by car (about 1 km from the Hel Museum, towards Jurata).

Please note : operation of the narrow-gauge railway is temporarily suspended . However, it may be available in the 2023 season – ask about it when you visit the museum. However, you can still see the Coastal Defence Museum and the Hel Railway Museum without restrictions.

From the exhibition in the former ammunition depot, you will learn more about, among other things, the use of the railway in supplying weapons and equipment to soldiers fighting during the coastal defence and its importance for communication with commanders.

10. Look at the Hel Peninsula from aboard a train

The train route from Władysławowo to Hel is one of Poland’s most beautiful railway lines . The tracks run parallel to the Baltic beach and the road to Hel. In the narrowest parts of the Hel Peninsula, you can see from the windows both the Baltic Sea and the waters of the Bay of Gdansk .

I love the holiday atmosphere always evoked when I travel by train to Hel. There are seasonal trains from many corners of Poland and daily services from the Tricity. The trains can be crowded in high season, and regional trains do not have seat reservations. Hel has no ticket office – you buy your tickets onboard.

You can take the train to the most important points on the Hel Peninsula – Jurata, Jastarnia, Kuźnica, Chałup and Władysławowo. From the stations, you can reach the beach in a few minutes. The Hel Peninsula is narrowest at the sections Władysławowo – Chałupy and Kuźnica – Jastarnia. There you have the best chance of seeing the Baltic and the Gulf at the same time.

11. See the record-breaking sculpture in the Kashubian Sculpture Park (Park Rzeźby Kaszubskiej)

Adjoining the railway station in Hel (built-in half-timbered technique – just like the old fishermen’s houses on Wiejska Street) is a park where you can see the world’s longest sculpture made from a single piece of wood. It is part of the open-air Kashubian Sculpture Gallery.

Between the alleys stand a dozen wooden sculptures made in the Kashubian style . Everything is consistent here – the benches and even the enclosures for the waste bins are made of wood. The most prominent attraction is the more than 15-metre-tall sculpture ‘Rzepka’.

The sculpture alludes to a poem by famous Polish poet Julian Tuwim – the turnip is being pushed to its side by wooden characters I still remember from my childhood. “Grandson for grandmother, grandmother for grandfather, grandfather for turnip.” 😉 A tree knocked down by lightning was used to create the sculpture.

12. Take a cruise on the Baltic Sea or use the water tram to the Tricity (Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot)

From the port of Hel, some ships will take you on a cruise on the Baltic Sea and bring you quickly to the Tricity. Such an excursion will add variety to your holiday full of sunbathing and sightseeing. You can choose between sea cruises and a water tram that goes to Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot during the season.

The water tram runs on weekends from May to September and daily during the holidays. Travelling along the Gulf of Gdansk is twice as fast as driving to the Tricity by car along a scenic but crowded road in high season. You can check the cruises available on a given day in the port of Hel.

What about heading out into the Baltic Sea to fish for cod or salmon? You can enjoy sea fishing trips in Hel . You don’t need any experience or equipment – the crew will train you and lend you all the necessary equipment.

You can also set off on a cruise ship on the Baltic Sea or enjoy a combined Hel – Gdynia – Hel cruise with sightseeing . If you are ready for an extreme experience (and a more significant expense), take a water taxi speeding up to 100 km/h and reach the Tricity in 15 minutes.

13. Watch the sunrise on a beach in Hel

On holiday, you don’t necessarily want to get up in the middle of the night and watch the sunrise, but I assure you that the experience is worth a sacrifice! In July, the sun rises over Hel’s beaches a little after 4 a.m. Dress warmly, as mornings can be chilly and windy.

Where to watch the sunrise in Hel? The sunrise will look most beautiful on one of the beaches. You can come to the Hel Peninsula or walk through the woods to the entrance of beach number 66. Sometimes there are beach yoga classes in the town (also at sunrise) – check out the Joga na Helu (Yoga in Hel) profile.

14. Take a cycling tour around the Hel Peninsula

The route along the Hel Peninsula is one of Poland’s most beautiful cycling routes and an excellent idea for a day trip in the area. It leads close to beaches, seaside forests and military monuments (the route starts along the Hel Fortifications Trail).

There are several bicycle rental companies operating in Hel during the season. Look for them on Wiejska Street (e.g. Ottobike at Wiejska 133) and near the railway station. You will be most comfortable riding a mountain bike on forest paths , but a regular “lady” bike will do just as well.

The route runs through the Seaside Landscape Park (Nadmorski Park Krajobrazowy) and past the nature reserve Hel’s Dunes (Helskie Wydmy). You can walk it along a short educational trail. By bike, you will reach the lighthouse ruins on Szwed’s Mountain (Góra Szwedów), which operated from 1936 to 1990.

The forest cycling path from Hel to Jurata is about 10 kilometres long, so you will cycle it slowly in less than an hour. You can continue towards Jastarnia and Chałup or return to Hel along the same road. If you get exhausted, you can always take the train on the way back.

15. Learn more about history and culture at the Hel Museum (Muzeum Helu)

The Hel Museum is the third part of Hel’s museum cluster, which you’ll find at the entrance road to the village. Unlike the military-focused Coastal Defence Museum and the Hel Railway Museum, this facility tells the traditions and history of Hel.

The Hel Museum has two main permanent exhibitions – dedicated to ethnography and nature. From the former, you will learn more about the mysterious history of Old Hel, which was submerged by the conquering waters of the Baltic Sea. You will see the former town on a model.

The Hel Museum is open in spring and summer – check opening hours and ticket prices in advance. I recommend buying a pass to visit all five parts of the Hel Museum Complex.

Another mock-up shows the luxurious German cure house (Kurhaus) “Hela” from 1896, which did not survive the Second World War. In the museum, you will also see a traditional Kashubian cottage, learn about local sculpture and embroidery, and find out more about the craftsmen of the past. After the tour, take a stroll through the peacock-dominated botanical garden.

16. Discover the shipwrecks of ORP Wicher II and Grom II

When you want to take a little break from the bustling centre of Hel, become an explorer of the area and head to the beach to the west of the War Port (Port Wojenny). The beach is much less popular than the one in the centre of Hel, so even in high season, you can feel like you’re in a wild corner of nature here.

The beach is about 2 kilometres from the railway station in Hel – walk west along Sikorskiego and Helska Streets. At the coast, you will discover the wreck of the ORP Wicher II ship embedded on the beach and the Grom II sticking out of the water next to it. Both ships were sunk deliberately to become part of the breakwater of the military harbour. They became an attraction in the process.

I recommend you walk a little further north to the tree-hung swings overlooking the bay . This is an excellent and unique photographic motif – only some people want to wander up to them. You’ll come across military sidings in the woods, which you’ve already learned more about at the Hel Railway Museum.

17. Take advantage of ideal conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing

The Hel Peninsula is a Polish mecca for kitesurfers and windsurfers . Nowhere is the wind more favourable than around Hel. On windy days, you will see dozens of kites on the Bay of Gdansk, lifting surfers into the air. Why not try to become one of them? 😉

There is a Funkite school at Camping Kormoran where you can sign up for individual and group kite- and windsurfing courses. You can acquire basic skills in two hours (I haven’t tried it yet). So you can quickly and at little cost see if these are the sports for you.

If you want to get into all-in kitesurfing, sign up for a 14-hour course that follows International Kiteboarding Organisation guidelines. Costs will be lower if you sign up for the training in a group of two or three people. Maybe it’s a good idea to have fun together with your partner or friends 😉

Visiting Hel – what’s worth knowing? My practical tips

You already know about all the attractions and things to do in Hel. However, that’s not why I spent some time in the city to keep the practical tips for myself. From my experience:

• get around Hel on foot, by bicycle or melex – the small town receives many visitors during the holidays, so there are sometimes parking problems. It’s also a shame to spit out exhaust fumes unnecessarily in such beautiful natural surroundings. In my experience, getting to even the furthest attractions is not breakneck 😉
• visit attractions as soon as they open – unless you want to get stuck in a queue at, for example, the lighthouse or the Sealarium. Tourists don’t want to get up too early (I know something about that). You can set your alarm clock even earlier and plan to watch the sunrise!

Where to sleep in Hel near the sea?

You can walk through the centre of Hel in a dozen or so minutes. Whatever hotel you choose, you should be close to the town’s main attractions – the Sealarium, the Fisheries Museum or the Seaside Promenade.

When choosing accommodation on Hel, check whether it offers free parking (essential in high season, as Hel can be crowded). Free beach equipment rental and breakfast included in the price of your stay are welcome. The closer to the forest, the quieter it should be.

How to get to Hel?

You can get to Hel by car via the road from Władysławowo , the parallel railway line and the seasonal water tram from the Tricity . Cars can get stuck in traffic jams during the holidays, as the number of people eager to visit Hel is always high.

You can get to Hel by direct trains from many corners of Poland. It was by rail that I came most often to the peninsula. Seasonal night trains pull sleeping cars, making a long ride more comfortable. There are regional trains from the Tricity (Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot) all year round. Check the timetable on Portal Pasażera .

I have already written about the water trams in the attractions section. You can get to Tricity by train, hop on board a ship and sail to the port of Hel in this way. You can get to the hotel by the melex popular on the coast.

We decided to travel by car , as I wanted to realise my big dream – a road trip through the Polish coast. In two weeks, we drove from Krynica Morska to Świnoujście, visiting the most important attractions of the Polish Baltic coast.

How much time should I spend visiting Hel?

You should spend at least two days exploring Hel . It will be convenient for you to stay in Hel for one night .

On the first day , you will visit the town centre attractions and the Hel Peninsula while seeing the military attractions hidden in the forests.

On the second day , you can take a cycling tour of the area. You will then look at the Museum of Coastal Defence, the Hel Museum and the Hel Railway Museum, reach the Hel Dunes reserve, see the Swedes’ Mountain and discover shipwrecks around the harbour.

I have shared everything I know about the attractions and places to see in Hel. With this information, you will be able to plan an unforgettable holiday. The Hel Peninsula is one of the greatest natural treasures of the Baltic Coast. I wish you a good time at the Baltic seaside!

A Traveler’s Guide to the Hel Peninsula in Poland

The Hel Peninsula, located in the north of Poland is one of the most picturesque and unspoilt parts of the Baltic Coast . Lovely beaches, the water surrounding the peninsula on three sides, a pretty resorts and charming Kashubian villages make the Hel Peninsula the perfect holiday setting.

Hel Peninsula Facts

The Hel Peninsula begins in the vicinity of the village of Władysławowo, its width is approximately 300 meters, extending all the way to the town of Hel, which owes its name.

In Hel’s vicinity, the width of the penisula is about 3 kilometers, but in the narrowest point, the Hel Peninsula is only 150 m. You will find here beautiful and charming holiday resorts, such as Wladyslawowo, Kuznica, Jastarnia, Jurata, and Hel.

Hel Peninsula has an excellent transport connection with the rest of the coast, and railway tracks run along the Penisula length from Wladyslawowo to Hel. You can also get to Hel by a water tram from one of the so-called Tri-City towns: Gdynia , Gdańsk , or Sopot .

During your stay, you can enjoy the beautiful, clean beaches by the sea or the shores on the Bay of Puck , which offers many opportunities for leisure and it’s the allure of the sea you want, the campsite is a haven for water sports enthusiasts and sun-seekers. From sailing and windsurfing, there are plenty of sports to try.

Extraordinary History and Culture

The very foundation of Hel brings with its many puzzles and exciting stories, and even legends. History has left many traces, made available today in the form of a military trial. The peninsula is still a combination of amazing Kashubian and fishing culture.

The inhabitants of Hel are primarily Kashubians, actively cultivating tradition and history. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Hel Peninsula was visited by summer tourists who, enchanted by the Kashubian community, the unique beauty of nature and the proximity of the shores, settled here permanently.

The legends say that many passing ships were carrying large amounts of gold and unfortunately sunk in the sea depths. The sunken ships settled at the bottom of the Bay of Puck, becoming an attraction for archaeologists and treasure hunters.

Towns of the Hel Peninsula

Little coastal towns of Hel Peninsula are known for their charm, beautiful sand beaches, and free-pollution air. Perfect for those seeking a casually elegant experience, the picturesque towns are filled with historic sights, museums, antique shops, and phenomenal seafood restaurants.

Perched on the very end of the Hel Peninsula, the small town of Hel offers typical seaside recreation with its sandy beach, traditional pier, and stunning cycle paths. You can relax on lovely beaches, in the apartment, or do some of the water sports organized in this charming tourist destination.

You can also pop-in to the Fisheries Museum, which is undoubtedly a special place located in the post-evangelical church of Saints Peter and Paul. It is a perfect place for all those who want to learn a bit of history related to the development of fishing.

Speaking about museums, you should direct your steps to the Coastal Defense Museum. This place is an exhibition of a vast military collection, which is closely related to the history of the country. It can be safely said that it is one of Poland’s most famous museums.

Another great attraction of Hel maybe a trip to the seal sanctuary, where, apart from admiring seals from behind the glass, you can learn a lot about the life of these beautiful animals and realize how dangerous their existence is due to anthropogenic activity.

On the hill in forest stands a stunning, octagonal brick lighthouse on a square base. If you are in shape and climb hundreds of steps, go for it because once you get to the top, the view of the peninsula is unbelievable.

While Hel combines a bit of a fishing village atmosphere, Jastarnia crushes in terms of the youth atmosphere. People here wear fashionable brands straight from showrooms and chill in stylish pubs.

You will find here wide clean beaches, spectacular dunes, a railway line, and cycling paths. This quaint resort attracts a huge number of celebrity characters on an annual basis. While taking a break here, you should head to one of the cozy restaurants, nearby pubs and taverns to try local specialties.

Don’t miss a 120m long pier and take a stroll along to admire views of the Puck Bay. For those who already have water madness experience, the local centers offer water equipment rentals, from kayaks to jet skis.

In the summer season plane, lovers can admire an unusual air-shows. Worth seeing as well are bunkers open to the public, which were Resistance center during WW II.

If you want to feel the atmosphere of old fishing villages, consider a trip to Kuźnica! This beautiful seaside resort is a part of Jastarnia. Its name derives from the German “kusfeld,” which means nothing less than a “kiss place.” Kuznica is indeed a place of a symbolic kiss between the sea and the land. Together with Jurata and Jastarnia, Kuźnica forms the so-called “little Tricity.” Here you can admire authentic fishermen’s houses from the 19th century, two marinas, or the almost 100-year-old church of St. Antoni.

If you fancy a more luxurious resort, Jurata is a place to be. Walks along the local beach offer sweeping views, and the air is extremely clean. Jurata is not, as many believe, a separate town, but a part of the city of Jastarnia. It was founded in 1928 and immediately became a luxury summer resort among Polish elites.

It was considered the most modern Polish resort and even called the “Polish Palm Beach.” Guesthouses and holiday homes were popping up here like mushrooms; many of them have survived to this day. You can find here not very wide but intimate beach perfect for relaxes hidden among lush vegetation.

Couples in love will find this place very romantic. Walks along the seashore and the local forests will surely be remembered for a long time.

It is a small Kashubian village with access to the sea from the north and the shallow Puck Bay from the south. The town is trendy among amateurs of water sports because it offers perfect conditions, especially for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

You can rent here water equipment, bicycles and try a tasty smoked fish. This charming village is famous for the first in the country naturist beach and has become a mecca for tourists.

The only drawback of the town is the difficulty of parting with it after the end of the holiday, which accompanies everything beautiful. Chałupy always welcomes tourists with open arms.

Wladyslawowo

Władysławowo is a place you love or… honestly hate. However, you find tourists who flock to this resort regularly. Fans of the town find here a multitude of attractions and a vibrant atmosphere. Those who appreciate the beauty of the long and wide beach or the contemplation of nature may feel overwhelmed by the momentum with which Władysławowo welcomes its guests in the summer.

Located at the foot of the Hel Peninsula (48 km from the Tri-City and less than 30 km from Jurata and Jastarnia), Wladyslawowo attracts crowds of tourists annually. The town boasts the widest beaches on the Polish coast, the highest water temperatures, and the largest fishing port in Poland.

The port mentioned above is one of the most important fishing ports on the Baltic Sea and most instagrammable place in Wladyslawowo.

You should pop-in to Fisherman’s house and climb up an observation tower. The observation deck, located on the 9th floor, allows you to admire the beautiful panorama of the city and entire Hel Penisula along with the Baltic coast. Don’t miss here Butterfly Museum on the 3rd floor and an exhibition Magical Head’s Spinning on the 5th floor, which guarantees unusual entertainment.

Families with children should visit Sowinski Lunapark, a great source of fan and even sometimes a moment of fear. The vibrant entertainment offer includes extreme attractions for adults and safe carousels for the little ones.

When it comes to beaches, I strongly advise avoiding overcrowded main beach Wladyslawowska; instead, you should choose the beaches from the side of Chałupy village. After a short stroll along the beach, you will enjoy the silence and maritime climate away from the crowds.

If you sports fan, you should head to Poland’s first avenue devoted to Polish and foreign athletes. In 2014, the “Crown of the Himalayas” monument was erected at the end of the avenue. The rock plates symbolize the eight-thousanders that Poles conquered!

Wladyslawowo is a safe, friendly, and vibrant place perfect for lovers of entertainment.

Loved your travel guide. We are planning a 10 days trip to Poland arriving in Gdnask; we would like to see Trójmiatro e spend few days at Hel Peninsula. Which beach do you recommend? We love it quiet. Then we going to the south to meet a local friend to show as the mountains, etc… she’s between Krakow and Katowice town. It’s our first time in Poland and looking forward to get to known your beautiful country.

Hi Simone, If you love quiet Bialogora or Piaski are great beaches. However these are not based on Hel Peninsula. Hel’s beaches like Jastrania and Jurata are quite nice. Hope I could help. Have a great time.

Finding Poland

Visit Hel at your earliest opportunity. Don’t wait 16 years like I did.

Astonishingly, I’ve been doing the rounds in Poland on and off since 2006 and I had never been to Hel (no pun intended) – before July 19, 2022. 

In recent years, I had come rather close to the Hel Peninsula, having visited Rozewie in 2020. A charming seaside village indeed. Hel, however, is in a league of its own.

Frankly, I think my wife and I had a miracle when we found a decent place to stay on Booking a few days before visiting Hel.

I’ve just run a random search on Booking for a one-night stay on Wednesday 10 August. This is around seventeen days away from the time of writing this post.

Booking’s response :

96% of places to stay are unavailable for your dates on our site .

The four property types that are available in Hel at that time include a caravan, tent, an overpriced quadruple room and Hotel Hel (not cheap either). 

How I found a presentable property for less than 500 zl, I will never know. Luck was on my side.

Anyway, Villa Nova 34A was our humble hangout for the night. 

The property is on the main road which runs to the end of the Hel Peninsula. However, the traffic dies down by the time you get to the far end of Hel. Our room was on the main road side of the building. Nevertheless, we slept just fine.

All in all, free parking at a nearby location, friendly hosts and well-kept rooms. We couldn’t have asked for more.

Top things to do in Hel

If you ever get the chance to visit Hel, make sure you add the following items to your to-do list:

1. Stroll along Wiejska Street :

The first thing we did when we left our hotel was to walk to the (mostly) pedestrianised Wiejska Street.

Lurking on the junction of Kaszubska Street and Wiejska, and not knowing whether to turn left or right due to the fact that we were overcome by all the charm that Wiejska exudes, we could do little else but stand still and take stock of our surroundings. 

Right in front of us – the Fisheries Museum – a branch of the National Maritime Museum. Reviews I had read of the museum were overwhelmingly favourable and I’m usually in decent enough fettle to enter museums. Nevertheless, we didn’t visit Hel to spend time indoors. Besides, it was gloriously sunny and pushing 30 degrees outside. 

With a length of 900 metres, Wiejska Street allows you to move several hundred years back owing to intriguing half-timbered fishermen’s houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. These distinctive buildings give Wiejska a special vibe.

Dorsz i Spółka restaurant

Finally, a real gem of a restaurant at Wiejska 54 called Dorsz i Spółka . On the first day, we both devoured the cod fillet in beer batter, served with chips, salad and shrimp mayonnaise. On the second day, my wife had the “Green Meadow” vegan option, while I went for the cod meatballs in dill sauce. 

Prices are very reasonable. The service was friendly and not too imposing.

2. Stroll along the Seafront

We left Wiejska Street and sauntered towards the Seafront ( Bulwar Nadmorski ).

Firstly, we climbed up some steps to stand on a boardwalk which overlooks the beach and the Bay of Puck ( Zatoka Pucka ). The water was crystal clear, the sand fine and white. What a spectacle, and what an atmosphere. 

The Statue of Neptune

Just off the southern end of the seafront, check out the Statue of Neptune.

The original statue of Neptune was casted in Bronze and assembled in Bologna, on the centrally located Piazza Maggiore, in 1564.

Hel’s version of the Neptune of Bologna stands at a height of 5.5 metres, when measured from the base of the plinth to the top of Neptune’s trident. 

Neptune, or Poseidon in Greek mythology, was the god of the oceans and seas. He personifies “strength and vigour” through the attributes hidden within the body of a young Roman athlete, and also “wisdom” through the head of a Greek wise man.

3. Head down to the Hel Headland

At the southern end of Wiejska Street, there is a roundabout where it’s worth taking the first exit straight onto Kuracyjna Street.

Walking down Kuracyjna, the countless souvenir kiosks and stalls, amusement arcades, taverns and fish restaurants will ably catch your attention.

Approaching the end of Kuracynja, the beach on Hel Headland ( Plaża na Cyplu Helskim ) comes into view. We hooked a right onto the wooden promenade, constructed in 2013. The walkway wasn’t crowded at all.

“The Beginning of Poland” obelisk

The promenade walkway winds its way around the headland and continues north. Then, a very famous monument – the Kashubian Mound ( Kopiec Kaszubów ). If you visit Hel, it’s worth taking a picture of this obelisk which honours “The Beginning of Poland” ( Początek Polski , as written on the monument).

The idea to emphasise Hel as the symbolic “Beginning of Poland” was born in 2007. It was initiated by Tadeusz Muża – the then President of the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association in Hel, Zbigniew Chmaruk – the then deputy mayor of Jastarnia and Mirosław Wądołowski – the mayor of Hel. The three men also sought to emphasise the unity and identity of the Kashubian community. 

In the centre of the monument, one can see the Kashubian Gryphon . The Kashubian coat of arms has a black gryphon with a crown on a yellow shield. 

The Kashubian Mound was officially unveiled on June 23, 2013.

4. Walk through the forest to reach the open beach

Day two had dawned. What a gloriously sunny morning it was. We stuck to the plan we’d made the previous day and walked through a beautiful forest to reach the open beach on the eastern side of Hel. 

Our hotel was just a few hundred metres from the beginning of our intended trail dead opposite the eastern end of Kaszubska Street. This route is also part of the area’s Military History Trail. Right off the end of this particular trail, there are several military artillery and anti-aircraft batteries. 

All in all, we set out at around eight o’clock in the morning and barely saw a soul, both in the forest and on the beach. Blissful peace.

We did notice several beachgoers on our return stroll through the forest.

The four things to do in Hel which I have described above are recommendations based on my own experience in the resort.

Frankly, I didn’t want to immerse myself in the Military History Trail and visit the Coastal Defense Museum . Firstly, due to the glorious weather. Secondly, I think we’ve all had our fill of war in recent months. 

All in all, Hel is like paradise on earth.

Surrounded by the waters of the Baltic Sea on three sides, Hel is a unique town in Poland – and each year it attracts thousands of people wanting to spend time at the seaside. If you are going to visit Hel, why not drop in to seal centre at the Hel Marine Station? It is a breeding centre for seals, which are later released to help re-establish the species in the Baltic Sea. It is definitely the biggest attraction for children here. The Museum of Fishing is also worth seeing – located in a former church with a high tower from which you can admire the beautiful landscape. The second most popular spot for visiting is a lighthouse dating from the early 19th century.

There is a promenade in the centre, with many amazing small cafes in the fishing style to encourage you take long walks down there. The harbour now serves primarily as a yacht marina, but you can sail to Tricity from there as well. Hel houses a sea life biological laboratory, a geophysical observatory and throughout the town there are many interesting examples of naval armament and equipment exhibited (torpedoes, torpedo tubes, mines etc.). The stone strengthening of the breakwaters and many interesting wrecks in the shallow sea near Hel make the area most popular for divers (e.g. a U-Boot and the tugboat Abille).

Hel is situated in the Pomeranian Voivodship in northern part of Poland, on the tip of the Hel Peninsula and some 34 kilometres from the Polish mainland. There are other seaside towns on the peninsula, including the famous Jurata (10 km) where Polish presidents spend their holidays, Jastarnia (13 km), Kuznica (20 km), and Chalupy (25 km) where windsurfers can enjoy the best winds in this part of Europe.

The name of Hel exists in Danish documents as early as 1198, but the first settlement in this place was much earlier. At that time most of inhabitants were fishermen, all other goods being brought here from other nearby locations. There were also some taverns, for the many sailors who often visited Hel. The 15th century saw the building of a new church of St. Paul, patron of fishermen. This church still exists to this day, currently playing the role of Museum of Fishery.

During its rich history Hel has been owned by a number of different countries at various times. For many years it was under the rule of Gdansk , while after the Partitioning of Poland it was annexed by Prussia. After World War I, as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, Hel became a part of Poland. On February 10th, 1920 there was a symbolic celebration held here – the Nuptials of Poland with the Sea.

Before World War II it was decided to limit access to the town and the peninsula in order to create the Fortified Region of Hel – a strategic defensive point. After the aggression of Germany on September 1st, 1939, Hel became famous as one of the heroically and long defended regions of Poland. The city was liberated in 1945, and after the war it grew not only as a fishing port, but also as one of the most popular Polish holiday resorts. more >> -->

Things to Do in Hel Peninsula

The Hel Peninsula, to the northeast of the Tri-City, is a pencil-thin strip of land that juts out into the Baltic Sea. This picturesque stretch of windswept, sandy beaches and pine forests is saturated with local holidaymakers in the summer months. Although the resort villages have the usual trappings of kitschy amber shops and fish-fry shacks, the peninsula retains a throwback-to-yesteryear charm. So much so, you can almost see a sepia glazing around you.

Aside from beachcombers, the area also reels in health-conscious vacationers who come here for its microclimate of salubrious iodine-rich air. It is a place to wind down, but the peninsula also has a reputation for high-speed pastimes. The Puck Bay is very shallow, making it a natural wading pool for beginner windsurfers; even 200m (656 ft.) from the shore, the water comes up only to your waist. However, daredevils take to these waters, too. The winds pick up enough gusto for old hands to get adrenaline kicks from kite surfing.

Before the area became a holiday zone, it was a Polish naval base. The navy has moved out, but what remains in the surrounding waters are over 1,500 shipwrecks, mostly casualties of World War II, attracting divers to dip in for viewing.

From end to end, the peninsula measures 34km (21 miles). At the northwestern tip, where the strip of land joins (or, rather, leaves) the mainland, is the fishing port of Wadysawowo (pronounced va-di-swa-vo'-vo ). And at land's end, so to speak, is Hel, another fishing port. In between Wadysawowo and Hel are the small villages of Kuznica, Jastarnia, Chaupy, and Jurata. All of them are tourist hubs. From the Tri-City, Hel is a popular destination for a day of kicking about in the sand. In summer, if you plan to stay overnight or do any watersports, book at least 2 months ahead. Off season, the special deals in the spa hotels are the reason to come.

Train to Hel – Take the train from the Gdansk Main Train Station. There are numerous connections throughout the day, so plan your trip according to your schedule. The journey takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to Hel.

1. Seal Sanctuary in Hel

What to see in Hel Poland? Without a doubt the Seal Sanctuary is the most famuse place on the Hel Peninsula Poland!

Back in March 1992, a wounded and exhausted infant seal was found on the nearby beach. It was transported to the Marine Station of the University of Gdańsk in Hel, and sometime later returned to good health.

Balbina, as it was called, was a huge tourist attraction of Hel. The fame of the seal contributed to the construction of a real sealarium!

It is highly recommended to visit the seal aquarium during feeding hours of seals – at 11 am and 2p m. You will get to listing to a short lecture before the seals start lunch 😉 The main task of the seal sanctuary is to protect and restore the population of grey seals in the area of the Baltic Sea.

So, would you visit the seals while on holiday in Hel, Poland? Hel Seal Sanctuary really is a top attractions for both kids and adults.

2. Fisheries Museum in Hel Poland

What to do in Hel? This is one of the main building in the town of Hel!

The museum is located in the post-evangelical church of Saint. Peter & Paul , next to the port and no far from the Seal sanctuary. Let’s be honest, everything in Hel is located close to each other ?

There are few interesting items on the exhibition, including an original fishing net used by Kashubian fishermen or a former boatbuilding workshop .

It is also worth climbing the stairs to the wooden church tower. It is a great viewing point on the Bay and the seaside promenade.

3. Hel lighthouse

Things to see in Hel? Any visit to Hel Poland wouldn’t be complete without seeing the lighthouse! It really is a stunning building.

Hel lighthouse is an active lighthouse, a historic attraction available to tourists in the months of May-September. It is situated at the eastern tip of the Hel peninsula and guides ship traffic into Gdańsk Bay and the Bay of Puck .

The 40.8-meter tower is painted red and octagonal in shape. How long will it take you to climb on it? 😉 The light source is set 38.5 meters above sea level, with a range of 17 miles.

The lighthouse is a tourist attraction and opens to the public during summer. Make sure you have it on your bucket list if you are in Hel on your summer vacation ?

4. The Museum of Coastal Defence in Hel

What to visit in Hel, Poland? If you want to experience 30 minutes of hel, then visit the Museum of Coastal Defence in Hel.

One of the most interesting fortifications in Poland. The fortifications of the Hel Peninsula is stretching from Kuźnice right to Hel. The museum is based in two largest buildings: the artillery stand s of the powerful Schleswig-Holstein battery and the fire control tower.

It’s a great place to learn about the heroes who were defending Hel for 32 days in the autumn of 1939 .

If you’re interested in WWII and the navy history, make sure to pay a visit to this museum. There is a great exhibition covering the 1939 attack on Poland with many items on the display.

What to see near Hel, Poland?

• Wladyslawowo

Located in the western part of the Gulf of Gdańsk, Puck bay is separated from the open sea by the Hel Peninsula. The average depth is only about 3 m which makes it perfect for water sport. During high season you can watch sailing competitions every week.

Harbor in Kuźnica

Called the fishing centre of Hel peninsula, this beautiful village has been known for years as the best place to get fresh fishes. It’s not exactly as British fish & chips but it’s definitely a must-try when visiting this region!

Lighthouse in Jastarnia

It is not the highest lighthouse on the peninsula but it’s still worth visiting as it really is a key landmark of the region. There are a few nice walks you can do around.

Naturist beach in Chałupy

This is definitely one of the most famous beaches in Poland mainly due to a song from the ’80s called Chałupy welcome to . The oldest nudist beach in Poland is almost 4 km long and is really beautifully situated with a natural fence of dunes and pine forest.

If you are planning to visit Hel in Poland and you are not restricted by a specific month, it is much better to visit the peninsula during June or September. You will have more space to enjoy this amazing region.
