The heart of the Split is a pedestrianized UNESCO World Heritage site, straightforward to reach from the cruise port. However, cruise visitors to Split can also explore other fabulous destinations less than a 1-hour drive from the cruise port.

In particular, the Krka River National Park with magnificent waterfalls, the roman city ruins of Salona , the historic towns of Šibenik, Trogir, and Primošten . And the mighty Klis fortress made famous by the Game of Thrones series.

Split is one of the most visited cruise ports of call in both Eastern and Western Mediterranean itineraries during the Spring-Summer season, with as many as 360.000 passengers and over 282 cruise ship visits in 2019.

The cruise port of Split has a very appealing character, the historic area is very clean and immaculately kept. On the whole, Split is perfectly safe. The local population is friendly, pleasant, well mannered, and speaks English very well.

For those cruising with families , there are just a few enjoyable things to do. Cruise passengers with disabilities or with walking difficulties will find it relatively easy to wander around in Split on your own.

Split, in Croatia, is the country's 2nd city with a population of around 250,000 urban residents. The city is located in the Dalmatian region, on the picturesque West coast of Croatia, on the Eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, 140 miles (229 km) north of Dubrovnik.

The cruise port in Split is very close to the heart of the historic city center. Depending on the pier where the cruise ship docks the distance is between 0.5 mile (800 meters) and 0.7 mile (1,000 meters).

Where cruise ships dock

Ships dock on a medium-sized mixed (ferry and cruise) port with 3 piers, perpendicular to the coast, and quays for up to 6 cruise ships to berth.

If you read in less accurate port guides that cruise ships anchor in Split be aware that those reviews are outdated. In fact, it seldom happens that there are over 6 cruise ships in port and tendering does rarely occur.

Because the cruise port is at such a close distance from the historic city center of Split, neither the port authority nor the cruise lines provide shuttle buses.

Cruise port services and amenities

The cruise port in Split doesn’t have a terminal building. However, cruise travelers will find on the pier, close by the ship's gangway, the following services and amenities:

  • Shore excursion buses

Outside the port gates, there are will also many other services and amenities such as:

  • Coffee shops
  • Exchange Office
  • Tourist Office
  • Local tour guides
  • Post Office
  • Bus Station
  • Railway Station
  • Public phones
  • Car and scooter rental

Things to do in Split cruise port

Split is an extraordinary port of call for cruise travelers interested in historic and archeologic sites, unique museums, religious sites, and Jewish heritage.

In Split, cruise visitors will enjoy strolling quaint villages and historic towns, admire monuments and notable landmarks.

If you appreciate breathtaking scenic sights and magnificent natural wonders, there are a couple of sites not to be missed.

1. Split Old Town

Split’s Old Town is one of the most iconic places to visit in Split. The Old Town is almost completely surrounded by amazingly preserved 17-centuries-old city walls that you can access in less than a 10-minute walk from the port. You can access the Old Town from four different entrances and already from the outside you can admire the stunning Roman architecture.

Inside the walls, there are a handful of historic landmarks, including the magnificent Diocletian’s Palace which forms about half the old town. Quaint little alleys, hidden corners, and cobblestone streets filled with authentic shops, stores, bars, and restaurants await you in this charming place. Below are the top attractions you should visit:

  • Diocletian’s Palace – built as the retirement residence of the Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the 4th century AD, the fortress-like palace used to serve both as a residence and a Roman military camp. Although the majority of the structures within this massive rectangular palace complex were adapted by people and rulers over centuries, you can still see some of the original squares, streets, colonnades, and walls. You can roam the streets of the palace for free, but if you want to visit inside some of the buildings – there is a fee.
  • Peristyle – this is the inner courtyard and the central square of the palace featuring some original ancient structures including colonnades and a 3,500-year-old Egyptian sphinx. The square is filled with restaurants, souvenir shops, and museums.
  • Saint Domnius Cathedral – the former Mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Diocletian was transformed into a Catholic cathedral. The cathedral complex is part of Diocletian’s Palace and consists of a few places of interest, such as the Bell Tower, the Cathedral baptistery (housed in the former Jupiter’s Temple ), the Treasury (former Temple of Cybele ) and the Crypt of St. Lucy. All these buildings are centered around Peristyle Square and are located only a few minutes walk from each other. There are 4 different types of entrance tickets which include different parts of the Cathedral, ranging between 6.63€ to 10.61€ per person.
  • The Bell Tower of the Cathedral is one of the most iconic structures as it offers the best panoramic views of the old town and the entire city. To visit it, you can either go for the Green ticket which includes The Cathedral, Bell tower, and Treasury, or for the most expensive option – the Purple ticket which includes all five sites (The Cathedral, Crypt, Baptistery, Treasury, and Bell tower).
  • Vestibule – another must-see part of Diocletian’s Palace is a rotunda, which was once used as the first section of an imperial corridor that led via the Peristyle to the residential apartments of the emperor.
  • The  Cellars of Diocletian’s Palace is a set of substructures located at the southern end of the palace that was once used to elevate Emperor Diocletian’s chambers on the floor above. The cellars were also used as a storage space for the Palace and nowadays represent one of the best preserved ancient complexes of their kind in the world.
  • Four Roman Gates to the city include Porta Occidentalis (the western gate, aka the Iron Gate), Porta Meridionalis (the southern Gate, aka the Bronze Gate), Porta septemtrionalis (the northern gate, aka the Golden Gate) and Porta Orientalis (the eastern gate, aka the Silver Gate).
  • Diocletian’s Palace was also a filming location for HBO’s legendary series Game of Thrones (Season 4, Episode 4 – The Rebellion of Slaves in Meereen and the scenes with Daenerys).
  • The People’s Square – also known as Pjaca, this area is the first inhabited part of the city outside the Diocletian Palace, where Split’s nobility lived. The square is dotted with beautiful Renaissance and Venetian houses and palaces, souvenir shops, bars, eateries, and small businesses. The 15th-century Old Town Hall building dominates the square, and another famous landmark is a small, charming City Clock with a bell located just beyond the Iron Gate.

The fort has had a long and turbulent history that dates back more than 2,000 years and changed hands between many civilizations and nations.

The Fortress Klis is also known as a setting for the fictional city of Meereen in the iconic Game of Thrones series, which increased the popularity of the site. Due to its importance and epic panoramic views of the entire coast and the city of Split, the Klis fortress is a must-see place!

Spreading over 88 square miles (142 square kilometers), Krka National Park boasts pristine lakes, cascading waterfalls, lush woodlands, and jaw-dropping cliffs stretching along the banks of the Krka River. Some of the main points of interest include Skradinski Buk waterfall ,  Roški waterfall , Visovac Island and Krka Monastery , an Orthodox monastery built in the 14th century by Jelena Šubić, sister of Serbian Emperor Dušan Nemanjić .

One of the best ways to experience Krka National Park is by Hop on Hop off-style boat which leaves from the Skradin ferry pier. The boat tours’ duration varies from 2 hours to 4 hours and includes stops at different places. The ticket prices for the boat tours range from 10€ to 20€, depending on the locations your cruise includes. The entrance tickets to Krka National Park vary by season and depend on the locations included in your itinerary.

Popular activities in the park include walking, hiking, biking, and boating. Numerous tour operators combine Krka National Park with wine tasting and olive oil tours as the entire region is popular for the production of premium quality wine and olive oil. These tours normally last full-day, but half-day options are also available if your time in port is limited.

7. Hvar Island

Hvar is one of the coolest and most popular Croatian islands on the Adriatic coast, renowned for its lively capital Hvar Town, rocky sea caves, gorgeous beaches, and glittering lagoons. Hvar Town boasts a bustling harbour lined with recreation boats, luxury yachts, and a long waterfront promenade filled with shops, upscale restaurants, and bars.

The impressive St. Stephen’s Cathedral dominates the city square and is one of the most important historic structures in town. It was built on the site of an early 6th-century Christian church and represents one of the finest examples of Dalmatian architecture from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Dubovica Beach is one of the most famous beaches, a tranquil cove with crystal-clear turquoise waters and a laid-back vibe. If you seek some amazing panoramic views of Hvar Island and Paklinski Islands, head to Fortica Fortress , accessible by car or walk. Those of you who prefer to explore the island should opt for an island tour that will take you through lavender fields to old villages where you’ll get the chance to taste the local olive oil and wine.

Alternatively, you can rent a scooter, car, or ATV and explore the island on your own. Last but not least, Stari Grad on Hvar is one of the oldest towns in Croatia dating from the 4th century BC known for the Stari Grad plain , an Ancient Greek agricultural plain that still kept its original walls and crops.

To get to Hvar, you can take a ferry from the Split ferry port and in an hour’s ride you’ll reach the island. A tour around Hvar island takes about four to five hours, however, the most popular tours from Split include island hopping boat trips . These normally include stops at some of the most famous swimming and snorkeling locations in and around Hvar, including Green Cave , Budikovac Blue Lagoon , Blue Cave, and Paklinski Islands .

So, as you can see, there are various options and you can arrange your trip based on your preferences and your ship’s time in port. In this case, the safest option would be to book a shore excursion with the cruise ship or a reliable tour operator who will guarantee your return to the ship on time.

8. Bačvice Beach

Located only a 5-minute walk from the Split cruise terminal, Bačvice Beach is known for its shallow, calm waters and soft sands. It is a popular party place dotted with numerous beach bars, pastry shops, and fast food outlets. The beach is ideal for families as it offers a variety of family-friendly facilities including play parks, table tennis, inflatable castles, and water slides. Watersports such as windsurfing, jet skiing, parasailing, and banana boat rides are also available.

Bačvice Beach is also the birthplace of a special beach game called “picigin”, which resembles a game of volleyball played in the sea, just without the net. Ježinac Beach , Kasjuni Beach , Firule Beach and Žnjan Beach are other popular beaches in the area.

Nestled 10 km/6.2 miles (a 20-minute drive) north of the Split port, Salona is an ancient town originally founded by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC. Salona was later conquered by the Romans and became the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The ancient city is known for being the largest archaeological park in Croatia and the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian, who used to live in Salona before he decided to retire in his new palace in Split.

The city was mostly destroyed by Avars and Slavs in the 6th and 7th centuries, and today only the ruins remain including the 1st-century Roman aqueduct and the thermal baths . You can also visit the ruins of Christian cemeteries and basilicas , as well as the ruins of city walls and an ancient amphitheater that used to host 20,000 people.

10. Strossmayer’s Park

Also known as Park Josipa Jurja Strossmayera, this lovely city park is located just outside the walls of Split Old Town and is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the old town. Here, you’ll find a Museum of Fine Arts showcasing European and local art from the 14th century to the present, as well Galerija Kula art gallery featuring contemporary art.

As I´ve been to Split only once I can´t compare anything and can only comment about the one tour I took.

I choose the "Highlights of the Split Riviera" tour. This tour takes you along the coast line from Split to the small village of Trogir. In Trogir they will give you a short walking tour and then allow some free time to explore on your own. On the way back to Split there´s a stop at an old mill for some local refreshments. While the stop was nice and the refreshments good I thought the stop could have been a bit shorter.

All in all I enjoyed the trip and especially Trogir. The tour gets back to Split early enonugh to explore a bit on your own. The tour drops you off right in the city center and the tender leaves right from there as well.

For pics you can visit my website .

Which shore excursion do you recommend in Split, Croatia?   Thanks! Jamie

Unlike "famous" cities of Rome, Venice, etc; am not familiar with Croatia either and don't seem to have much curiosity/desire to explore it. Also, as end of our cruise, assume we will be getting tired of sight seeing. Perhaps that is all my ignorance or even plain stupidity. Anyway, we have signed up for tour to do Golden Beach, which is supposed to be quite famous. Anyone know anything about that?? Thanks

We did the Scenic Krka National Park excursion in April 2008. Fantastic waterfalls and scenery. One of our most enjoyable excursions to date. Would love to go back as we only saw a small portion of the national park. The park has a website which would give you a better idea of the sights that are there.

Also, check the Europe ports of call board for other suggestions.

Cottage411, were you able to go swimming in the waterfalls at Krka park?

Yes, there was a swimming area, but although the air temp was in the low 70's, the water was still very cold in early April and no one was swimming. As you walk through the park there are waterfalls in every direction you look. Some are massive but most are smaller. Swimming is in the designated area only and you are not able to climb the waterfall as you would in Dunn's River, Jamaica.

This excursion was a great change of pace from the other European ports we had been to. I believe that we were in the park for about 2 1/2 hours, and the ride to it was about 1 hour each way. Lots of time after the excursion for shopping and exploring the port area. The port area is an interesting mix of new construction and historical buildings and is well worth strolling around for an hour or two..

FreewayFortune

I'm glad to hear the excursion is so good. That's the one we booked for August. We also figured it would be a nice change of pace from the craziness of the other ports.

We just returned from our land vacation to Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia

We spent 2 nights in Split and loved every moment of it

Trogir and Split are both listed by Unesco as World Heritage sites http://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/hr

Diocletians Palace in Split is very easy to do on your own.

The TI is located in Peristil Square.

We have personal travel website and have just uploaded

where2next - just reviewed your vacation pictures of Croatia - they are great!

The pictures and the music bring back many fond memories of our visit a couple of months ago. I agree, it is an undiscovered gem and we can't wait to go back. Thanks for posting the link to your website

Jacques O

Hi Where2next

We are booked on the Brillance of the Seas from Barcelona on 22nd June to Venize and will be calling at Split.

made some research already about what to see and visit in town. Thanks for your information - match what we intend to do.

One question : DO THEY ACCEPT EUROS THERE? AS THEY MOSTLY DO IN DOBROVNIK?

Can you pay the entrance into the museums and churches in Euros? it would be so convenient. Don't fancy changing currencency!

Jacques O, Paris

Bonjour Jacque!

I'm glad you asked me that. We were there in low season and cruise ships were beginning to arrive in Dubrovnik.

While I was in Dubrovnik I heard 2 seperate shop people say we DO NOT except USD, we can accept Euros

We paid everything in Kuna as we were traveling independently on land.

In the Grocery Stores they said NO to Euro.

At some admissions for Museums they said NO to Euro.

This we overheard when cruise ship people tried to do it.

Some places said yes, and maybe the yes will be more widespread once tourist/cruise season is in full swing!

My suggestion would be to add up the admissions and cost of food that you might need while in port and pick up some Kunas in an ATM in your 1st stop based on that.

It would be a total waste of your precious port time, to stand in line somewhere and be told we won't accept Euros since it's such a hit and miss.

To give you an idea on some of the prices...

While we were there 45 Kuna was pricing at 10 USD, for other conversions check out oanda.com or xe.com

Pizza ~ 45 kuna

16 oz smoothie ~ 20 kuna

Internet 30 min. ~ 20 kuna (this did fluctuate slightly, but seemed to be the general going rate)

ice cream ~ 5 kuna

bottled water ~10-15 kuna (go into grocery store - 4 kuna)

local bottled beer ~ 10-15 kuna

Linguine with Scampi ~ 90 kuna

small traditional egg shaped Christmas ornament ~ 26 kuna

Apple or Banana about ~ 6 -8 kuna

Most entrance fees~ 5 -20 kuna

Something I should note for USA visitors.

The Croatia Kuna is trading against USD at about the same as EURO. While Croatia was not expensive, it wasn't cheap either and most items ending up costing the same as if we were purchasing them at home in our local store or restaurant

We loved Split and Croatia as a whole.

The Treasury in Diocletians Mausoleum/Church of St. Domus

is quite good and worth a visit. The tower offers spectacular views! If you are the type of traveller that likes to immerse yourself the City Museum if very informative.

You might want to wander over to the port section as

I've been commenting on Split and Dubrovnik over there!

and as the french say....a la cravate!

Have a great time!

Hi where2next

Thanks for your info and advide. I guess i'll be wise to get some local currency. It might help visit some nice monuments where they don't acccept euros or USD to pay the entrance fee.

Review: Split & Trogir, Croatia Shore Excursion

Picture of Sarah Bretz, Contributor

Sarah Bretz, Contributor

  • January 10, 2018

The last stop on our  Norwegian Star   cruise was Split, Croatia. The voyage began in Croatia and ended there, which I thought was fitting because I absolutely fell in love with what little I saw of the country. We chose another Cruising Excursions tour, called the Split & Trogir Tour.

I am  so  glad we picked this tour, because the little town of Trogir had my heart from the moment I stepped foot off the bus. It was about a 30-minute ride there, where our guide gave us some history of the area and pointed out things along the way. When we arrived in Trogir, we pulled in a bus station right in front of a little harbor and I knew immediately that I would love the charming town.

IMG 8298

After that, we strolled through the town square and saw a monastery, as well as Cipko Palace. I cannot get over how these old European towns look and feel, it’s truly like being in a different world in a lot of ways. We visited a number of them on this cruise, and each time I was still in awe that I was actually standing in such a beautiful, historic place. We wound around the small walking streets and happened upon some people selling various items basically outside their front door. It literally looked like a magazine with the bright colors, greenery, and old stone structure.

trogir croatia

At the end of our time in Trogir, we had some time to explore the town and do whatever we wanted on our own. Doug and I found a little vintage wine bar and settled in for a glass. I tried Riesling because I am used to my own wine region’s Riesling, and wanted to compare it to Croatia’s. Theirs was crisp and refreshing just like what I’m used to, but wasn’t as sweet which I actually enjoyed.

trogir croatia

Back in Split, we headed to Diocletian’s Palace, which is enormous and almost a city-within-a-city. It’s not like a normal mansion-looking palace you would expect. It was built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the 4th century AD. Our guide walked us through, stopping along the way to tell us about different points of interest and give us some history that we wouldn’t have easily gotten elsewhere during the tour.

split, croatia

One thing in particular about Split that I will never forget is when we walked through the tall vestibule of the palace. There was a group of men singing a cappella, and they sounded absolutely amazing. The vestibule is basically a cylinder shape pointing up to the sky, and it’s clear that they’ve chosen that spot because of the beautiful acoustics. A crowd gathered around and we were all entranced until they hit that last note. I can’t speak for how often they are there, but I’d guess that it’s just about every day during the busy tourist season – so if you’re touring Diocletian’s Palace, keep an ear out for them.

IMG 8426

All in all, this was a fantastic excursion and Trogir is now one of my favorite places I have ever visited. If you’re going on a cruise that stops in Split and you want to experience something a little bit down the road, I can’t recommend this excursion enough. I would go back in a heartbeat.

I think in general, Croatia as a whole with both Split and our port day in Dubrovnik was my favorite country I visited on our seven-night voyage, aside from our time before and after the cruise in Venice, Italy which I would consider a tie. If you missed my Dubrovnik excursion review, you can check it out here .

For more information on this tour, click here.

We were given this excursion in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Vita, vino, e viaggio!

Review of the Royal Caribbean Cruise: 7 Night Greece & Croatia Cruise

Rick and I are no strangers to cruising, but most of our cruising has taken place in the Caribbean as we head to the Bahamas or Mexico. We’ve been discussing cruising in different places and an opportunity presented itself this summer.

Unfortunately, Go Ahead Tours canceled a trip we were planning with our friends to Croatia two months before the trip was scheduled to go, so we had the time off work but nowhere to spend it. I still had Croatia on my mind so I started looking up if we could do it on our own or still visit it.

We were getting our money back from Go Ahead and then we thought about cruising as it’s relatively affordable and I happened to find this 7 Night Greece & Croatia Cruise through Royal Caribbean – who we normally cruise with – and over the dates we had off already. The cruise was set to depart from Venice, Italy (really Ravenna which is two hours away) on Sunday, July 2 and return to Italy on Sunday, July 9. We already had June 29 – July 10 off. Perfect!

We decided to spend a day and a half in Venice before the cruise as we’ve learned it’s always better to get there early than have something happen to your flights and freak out about missing the boat!

So, here’s what we thought of our first European cruising adventure with Royal Caribbean.

Cruise itinerary

  • Day 1: Venice, Italy (Ravenna port)
  • Day 2: Split, Croatia
  • Day 3: Cruising
  • Day 4: Athens, Greece
  • Day 5: Santorini, Greece
  • Day 6: Kefalonia, Greece (Originally it was Olympia)
  • Day 7: Cruising
  • Day 8: Venice, Italy (Ravenna)

The itinerary was perfect for what we were looking for as it included a stop in Croatia! I’ve wanted to visit Greece over the years but I wasn’t sure about my comfort level with planning a full trip in Greece on our own. This was a great way to visit iconic travel destinations in Greece without worrying about transportation or accommodations.

We booked several shore excursions during our cruise but did leave our last stop open just for wandering and enjoying the port city. We booked our excursions through Royal Caribbean, but many were operated by third-party vendors.

Our tickets for our excursions were in our stateroom when we arrived on the ship and most of the check-ins take place in the theater. The only one we didn’t meet on-board was our first excursion in Split.

Split by Open Air Sightseeing Bus with Walking Tour

This tour was fantastic and the most affordable! I will say the pictures of the tour were a bit misleading as it said we’d get views above the city, which we did not, but whatever.

It started with a bus tour of the more modern parts of Split before dropping us off at the Riva, waterfront walkway, for a walking tour of the city and Diocletian’s Palace. Our guide was great and is a Split local and talked about the changes the city’s gone through as well as regular life, such as pointing out the square where his parents met.

The only thing I wish we had known was that the bus pulled up right in front of the ship. We got off the ship and wandered to the parking lot where we saw buses but that’s not what we needed to do. We literally could have just walked off the ship at the meeting time and gotten right on board.

  • Tour time: 10:15 a.m.
  • Tour duration: 4 hours and 15 minutes
  • Price: $158 (for two people)

Explore Athens and Ancient Acropolis

I had no interest in waiting in long lines to get tickets for the Acropolis or figuring out how to get there on our own, which was a good decision as we actually dock in Pireaus and have to drive to get to Athens.

This was a pretty good tour as we were picked up right from the ship and then took a bus tour of Athens before heading to the Acropolis. Our tour guide was great and shared the history of the sites we were visiting and guided us to the top of the Acropolis.

We did have like 30 minutes to explore on our own and I really wish we had had more time to really appreciate the historic landmarks, read all the signs, and just enjoy our time there. I felt rushed and would have liked a bit more time, but it is what it is.

After our exploration it was back on the bus to head back to the ship. We had debated staying in Athens on our own just to see more but we were also hot and tired and decided to take the bus back to the ship. I think if we do this itinerary again we’ll look up how to get a cab back to the ports so we can spend more time in Athens.

  • Tour time: 8:30 a.m.
  • Tour duration: 4 hours and 15 min
  • Price: $238 (for two people)

Selfie Tour of the Best of Santorini

The name of the tour was kind of cringe, but we forged ahead as I thought we’d get a neat photography tour of Santorini and this was the most disappointing excursion we booked as it was not really a photography or even selfie tour.

We took a tender boat to Santorini and then boarded a bus and drove to Oia and on the way one of the guides handed out selfie sticks… Okay… And then our guide led us to the drop-off point and Oia and told us where to go.

For what we paid, we might as well have booked the simple Oia tour and saved money. I expected a guided tour of the city and “hidden” spots to snag the best photos. I’m still glad we got to visit Oia as it’s cute, but honestly, Rick and I snapped a few pictures and then went to a wine bar to escape the crowds.

Oia is small with narrow alleys and the crowds were ridiculous. We had like an hour at this stop to take pictures and you’re waiting at least 5-10 minutes to get a good spot to get some photos.

I’d love to return to Oia but stay at a hotel there to fully enjoy the city and wait for the cruise crowds to head back to the ships, and then enjoy a gorgeous sunset!

This tour included stops in Oia and Fira and we really loved our time in Fira! The tour does state that you have to get back to the ship on your own, but many people apparently didn’t read the tour description. You can either pay six euros and take a cable car down to the port and board a tender boat there, or there is the Donkey Trail which you can walk that also leads you back to the port and tender boats.

Rick and I opted to walk the Donkey Trail and it is steep and the trail is rocky, so if you want to walk it, wear good shoes with good traction or tread!

  • Tour time: 8:15 am
  • Duration: 4 hours 15 min
  • Price: $278 (for two people)

Check-in & check-out & transportation

Rick and I were both surprised at how much more streamlined the boarding process was in Italy compared to our times getting on cruises in Florida. Once we got off the bus, we got in a line for security. They scanned our boarding passes, checked our carry-on bags, asked us a few health-related questions, and then we were good to get on the ship and get to our room.

Check-out was also easy, at least for us, as we opt to carry our own bags off the ship. So, we bypass the whole bag collection and waiting for your group to be called to disembark. We did have to visit guest services to let them know how we wanted to get off the ship and how we were getting back to the airport, but otherwise we docked at 6:30 a.m. and walked off the ship at 6:45 with our own bags and met our driver right there at the dock.

We had booked bus transportation from Venice to Ravenna via Royal Caribbean and it was pretty easy to figure out, it was just a lot of waiting around. We arrived at the Tronchetto around 10:30 a.m., waited at least an hour and a half, in the sun, before boarding our bus. It is a two-hour drive from Venice to Ravenna (without traffic). The bus ride did include one stop for bathrooms and it cost about €1.50.

We did book a private car to get us back to Venice for our flight home as we have had issues in the past with the group transportation back to the airport. Like, one time we sat on the bust for over an hour before leaving for the airport and we had a flight to catch! We weren’t chancing that with an international flight so we booked our own car service back to Marco Polo airport.

The Explorer of the Seas

We were on the Explorer of the Seas for this cruise and you could tell the ship was older but it was still well-maintained. It had all the same amenities and dining and bars we expected to find, such as the theater, lounges, casino, pool deck, and dining.

It felt exactly like the other ships we’ve sailed on in the Caribbean.

Accommodations

We have learned to spring for a stateroom with a balcony when we cruise and we definitely wanted one for this adventure as we pulled into the different ports. Our room was spacious enough for our needs and had a Queen-sized bed, couch, desk, closet, and bathroom.

The bedding was cozy but I think the pillows could have been a bit better, but we made do. For how often we were in our room, it worked for the two of us. When we were in our room we were most often on the balcony, enjoying a drink and the exceptional views of the Greek islands.

Housekeeping

Our attendant, Iwayan, was fantastic! He took great care of our room, provided us with anything we needed (like a corkscrew to open our wine), and was often around to let us back into our room if we were carrying souvenirs or cocktails back to our room.

He also checked in with us on the first day on-board to ask what time we would like our room cleaned and so we got to pick 9:30 a.m. as we knew we’d be out of the room by that time each day.

Dining & bars

The ship had the typical dining options we expect onboard a Royal Caribbean ship, such as:

  • The Windjammer (buffet)
  • The Promenade (pizza, sandwiches, light bites)
  • The dining room (which we did not visit during this trip)
  • Specialty restaurants (which we also did not visit)

We opted to just eat at the Windjammer buffet so we could eat on our own schedule. I know, we’re boring like that.

We did visit plenty of the bars though! We both loved the British pub, the Schooner Bar, and The R, plus we visited the pool bars a few times while soaking up the sun. Each bar has its own menu of specialty drinks, plus they all serve the cocktail of the day, and you can get standard bar drinks too.

We mostly stuck with prosecco but we did try a few specialty cocktails. I absolutely loved the rum punch at The R and ordered two of those and I also made some return trips to the British pub to get this beer-based cocktail that had jam and honey.

We also made sure to bring our own wine on board as you’re allowed to bring one bottle of wine per person on the ship. We feel this is a great way to save money at the bars and not buy a full drinks package. But, we also do have Diamond status so we also get four drink coupons each every day. So that also makes it easier to not buy a drinks package when we cruise.

Diamond Lounge

Royal Caribbean changed up its loyalty rewards program a bit. Rick and I have Diamond status and that used to mean that we could make great use of the Diamond Lounge for its happy hour where it was all-you-could-drink from 4-8. Now, your SeaPass card is loaded with four drink coupons to use throughout the day.

So, this was the first cruise we’ve been on where the Diamond Lounge is kind of dead. I think we only ever saw at most five other people in the lounge with us at any given time. We did pop in a few mornings to get some breakfast, served from 7-10 a.m., and enjoyed the breakfast breads and pastries, fresh fruit, and yogurt parfaits, plus some lattes!

We still visited the Diamond Lounge in the evening as it offered a great and quiet place to relax, have a glass of prosecco, and watch the sunset.

Entertainment

We enjoyed the entertainment on the show and felt the cruise directors and entertainers were engaging. We checked out the ice skating show, battle of the sexes, trivia nights, the comedians, the dancing shows, live music, and so much more.

We really love the audience participation games, like Battle of the Sexes, The Newlywed Game, and so on as every single show is different. I’d seen a few online reviews that said the entertainment wasn’t good on this ship but I would disagree. Sure, it’s your standard cruise entertainment, but it wasn’t bad by any means.

Since we had two days at sea, Rick and I knew we’d be paying a visit to the spa! I booked a 100-minute hot stone massage and Rick chose a traditional 100-minute Swedish massage treatment.

Both of our treatments were fantastic and we’re so glad we waited until the last day of the trip and last day at sea to book our appointments. It was the perfect way to tend the trip and relax after days of walking and exploring.

It’s good to note that gratuities are already included in your fee for any massage treatment!

With our Diamond status we do get one free day of internet, which worked wonders on on our last day to check in for our flight home. But, I will say the internet is not great. I would not be happy if I paid almost $30 per day for it. I could not use the internet in our room and had to go to a main area to be able to check in on the United app.

It worked okay out about on the ship but it became super slow, like I was having flashbacks to the internet of 1999 as soon as we were in our room.

Royal Caribbean app

You definitely want to download the Royal Caribbean app before your trip so you can view the ship’s deck maps, activities, and discover what’s open for eating and drinking. It also loads your booked activities so we knew what time we had to be ready to go for our excursions and where to meet.

All in, we had a great experience with our first European cruise! We love this type of travel, cruising and guided tours, as it allows us to get a taste of certain travel destinations and understand if we want to come back or we’ve seen it and are ready for new adventures.

We weren’t sure what to expect with Royal Caribbean in Europe, but honestly, it felt the exact same as departing from Florida. So, if you’ve cruised before it’ll feel so familiar.

Now that we’ve done it, I’m already looking up other options for future European cruises as we really enjoyed our experience!

What other destinations do you recommend we check out on a European cruise? Let us know your favorite cruising destinations in the comments below!

Hey, I'm Stephanie! I'm a copywriter living in beautiful Denver with my husband Rick, and our dog Rocco. I love traveling, writing, reading, and being outside as much as possible - unless I'm on the couch binge watching Stranger Things with a glass of wine! Thanks for reading and being a part of the adventure with Back to the Passport! ❤️

Do they speak English on the excursions in the foreign countries(Greece, Croatia etc)? On board- are there any announcements in English from the captain or the activity planner?

Hey Julie, yes to both! They do offer excursions in other languages but they also have English-speaking options and it will be clearly labeled what language the tour is in. And all the announcements are made in English, plus a few other languages. The Cruise Compass (the printed schedule of the day’s activities) is also in English.

Discover Historic & Natural Beauty on Split Shore Excursions

Split, Croatia is one of the jewels you’ll experience on an Adriatic cruise due to its gorgeous harbor and historic Old Town that’s housed in the remains of a 4th century palace. All this natural beauty and history means you'll have both an educational and fun time on a Split shore excursion.

One of the top Split cruise excursions to enjoy is related to that aforementioned palace. It was built to serve as the palatial home for Roman Emperor Diocletian in his retirement. It is a unique site to behold since the walls that once served as his living quarters have been revamped today to house restaurants and shops with narrow cobblestone walkways leading between them. It’s a marvelous place to explore and Split shore excursions that include a tour of Diocletian’s Palace can ensure you don’t get lost!

When you’re on one of our cruises to Split, Croatia , seeing what’s underground Diocletian’s Palace is a must-do. The palace was built with a basement in order to house food and wine. It reflects the layout of the above-ground portion of the castle, so touring it gives you a good sense of how Diocletian’s living quarters were laid out back in the 4th century. The basement also has informational boards so you can learn more about the history of the palace.

Beyond touring Diocletian’s Palace, there are many other interesting and exciting shore excursions you can experience during a day in port. You can get away from the bustling Old Town and escape to the Dalmatian countryside. Another fun getaway is spending the day on Krka Island in the serene Krka National Park.

If you’re a wine connoisseur, you can also learn more about Croatian wine on a wine-tasting shore excursion. And if you’re more of a connoisseur of famous TV shows, namely Game of Thrones, you’ll love one of the Split cruise excursions that takes you to local filming locations of the show.

From history to modern day attractions, you’ll have a memorable time exploring Croatia’s Dalmatian coast on a Split shore excursion.

From disco hits to punk ballads, every night's a different sonic adventure here — and there's a good chance you'll end up on the dance floor.

1400℠ Lobby Bar

A vintage aesthetic meets modern chic at 1400℠ Lobby Bar, an upscale hangout with indoor and terrace seating that delivers wow-worthy sea views. It's the first time the Royal Promenade has ever opened to the outdoors on anyof our ships, and this bar is sure to leave a lasting impression. The cocktails here are also exceptional; each has been developed with world-renowned mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim.

Trellis Bar is the place to kick off your evening as one of the most charming options for drinks and bites onboard Icon of the Seas℠. Stop in for pre-dinner appetizers that look as beautiful as they taste, paired with cocktails and wines. The surroundings are as impressive as the food, thanks to the thousands of tropical plants and lush living walls that encircle Central Park®.

You don't need to be celebrating something to crave a glass of bubbly. Located in the buzzing heart of Central Park®, Bubbles℠ is a walk-up Champagne bar serving fizzy favorites by the glass or bottle. Swing by in the morning to start your day with a mimosa, then raise an evening flute to a day well spent. This bar is another ideal option for couples looking to toast an incredible cruise. Don't forget to snap a shot of the trickling Champagne tower.

If you came to show off your steps, there's no place onboard like Boleros. The six-piece band at this vibrant, Latin-themed club keeps the samba, salsa, merengue and bachata beats going until the early morning hours. The bartenders keep step, making sure the Cuban mojitos and Brazilian caipirinhas stay flowing.

It's all about the singalong at this nautical-themed venue, where the soundtrack is set by a talented pianist who's always down to take requests. Order up a frosty pint, settle in beneath the mast and get ready to raise a glass to one heartwarming ballad after another.

Point & Feather℠

Point & Feather℠ is a snug English pub onboard Icon of the Seas℠ where you can enjoy a diverse variety of brews while aiming for the bullseye in a round of darts. Keep an ear out for live music; this inviting watering hole regularly hosts live guitarists. The pub is a fitting option for those looking for more easygoing nightlife entertainment.

Spotlight℠ Karaoke

One of the best cruise ship nightlife options onboard Icon of the Seas℠ is Spotlight℠ Karaoke . Choose from thousands of popular songs and belt them out in front of a live audience. Or reserve your own room for a private singalong party with your crew. Need some liquid courage? Grab something to quench your thirst from the onsite bar before your big break.

The shimmering AquaDome℠ perched at the top of Icon of the Seas℠ unlocks a world of sensory discovery. At this next-level venue, athletes dazzle with spellbinding stunts beneath a shapeshifting waterfall as you sip delicious craft cocktails paired with unique culinary creations.

When you sail onboard Icon of the Seas℠, evenings are just as exciting as days spent exploring ashore or enjoying the ship's many cruise activities and attractions. With so many thrilling experiences onboard, leveling up every night of your cruise getaway is easy. Pro tip: make a game plan ahead of your sailing to maximize your time once the sun goes down. And make sure you save some energy each day for whirls on the dance floor, karaoke sessions and late-night cocktail hours.
