Great Gable announce national tour for ‘On The Wall In The Morning Light’

The Perth outfit will take their second album on the road in October

Great Gable. Credit: Charlie Hardy

Great Gable have announced a 13-date national tour in support of their forthcoming second album, ‘On The Wall In The Morning Light’.

The run will kick off in Adelaide on October 7, when the Perth indie-rockers take to the stage at the Lion Arts Factory. They’ll head to Hobart next, before knocking out a trio of Victorian shows (in Melbourne, Ballarat and Geelong) and four NSW dates (in Coffs Harbour, Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong) throughout the rest of the month.

Across the first weekend of November, Great Gable will perform in Brisbane, Byron Bay and Maroochydore. They’ll wrap it up with hometown show the following Friday (November 11), performing at Perth’s Astor Theatre.

The run will be supported by fellow Perth indie-rockers Dice, as well as Melbourne soul artist Velvet Bloom . Both openers will sit one date out – Dice won’t appear in Hobart, and Bloom will be absent for the Ballarat show. Tickets for all dates of the tour are on sale now – find them here .

‘On The Wall In The Morning Light’ is set to arrive on July 8 via Matt Corby ‘s Rainbow Valley Records. Thus far, Great Gable have released four singles from the album: ‘Hazy’ , ‘Another Day’, ‘Our Love’ and ‘Dancing Shoes’ . They performed the lattermost song for triple j at the start of June, alongside their Like a Version cover of Owl City ‘s ‘Fireflies’.

Great Gable dropped their debut album ‘Tracing Faces’ , in August 2020. It was featured in NME‘s roundup of the top Australian album picks for that month, with Alex Gallagher writing: “There’s an earnestness to what Great Gable do that makes them difficult not to find charming, with singer Alex Whiteman’s from-the-hip reflections on love, loss and mental health feeling like an authentic snapshot of a period in the band’s lives.”

Great Gable’s ‘On The Wall In The Morning Light’ tour dates are:

OCTOBER Friday 7 – Adelaide, Lion Arts Factory Saturday 8 – Hobart, Altar * Thursday 13 – Melbourne, 170 Russell Friday 14 – Ballarat, Volta ** Saturday 15 – Geelong, Barwon Club Wednesday 26 – Coffs Harbour, Hoey Moey Thursday 27 – Sydney, Factory Theatre Friday 28 – Newcastle, Cambridge Hotel Saturday 29 – Wollongong, Uni Bar

Recommended

NOVEMBER Friday 4 – Brisbane, The Brightside Carpark Saturday 5 – Byron Bay, The Northern Sunday 6 – Maroochydore, Solbar Friday 11 – Perth, Astor Theatre

* – Dice not appearing ** – Velvet Bloom not appearing

great gable tour

With a blend of early 2000s NYC rock and UK-influenced indie, Great Gable have crafted a sound that is uniquely their own. Their music is characterised by catchy hooks, heartfelt lyrics, and an overall sense of warmth and positivity. The band's ability to create anthemic, feel-good tunes has earned them a loyal and rapidly growing fan base.

Great Gable's latest release, ‘ Read The Room ’ has not only solidified their position as one of Australia's most exciting emerging bands but has also garnered attention on an international scale. Their breakout single ' So Cool ' is a vibrant and catchy song that perfectly encapsulates the band's signature sound.

Hot off the back of their massive UK/EU tour, Great Gable are headed to FNQ for the first time ever. With new music under their belt the Perth 4-piece have spent the first half of 2024 touring non-stop through New Zealand, the UK, Europe and Australia. Catch them at the Tanks for a very special one-off show.

Where is this walk?

Great gable from honister pass.

Great Gable is one of the best known mountains in the Lake District. The approach of Great Gable from Honister Pass is excellent with good views and an interesting varied descent over three more Wainwrights.

Buttermere from Brandreth

Sometimes described as the cheats way to the summit of Great Gable (due to its high start), I find it a sensible alternative to the unending steep slopes from which the summit is gained from all other directions. The views on the walk in down first Buttermere, then Ennerdale and finally Wasdale are excellent and to be savoured. The spiral wheel of the Lakeland valleys are best seen on this approach and there is nowhere the topography of the entire Lake District is better laid out.

However this does not mean that the rocky slopes of Great Gable on its summit cap are avoided. It simply means there is more pleasant walking before getting there. The outbound and return routes meet at Windy Gap between Great and Green Gable. From here it is a rocky path that climbs to the iconic summit. On the summit look out for the bronze plaque where the local mountaineering club erected the memorial in memory of those club members who died in the First World War. On the return I always like to keep high for as long as possible with on this occasion Green Gable, Brandreth and Grey Knotts adding to the tally of Wainwrights. By the time you have returned to Honister Pass you will not feel you have cheated at all.

Spend some time exploring the slate community that has grown up at Honister Pass. The Via Ferratta rope day is excellent. So is the tour of the mines but last time we stuck to a simple mug of tea!

The traditional and most satisfying route up Great Gable is from Seathwaite .

Navigation Tips on Great Gable from Honister Pass

The summit area of Great Gable is rocky and paths are difficult to follow. It is compass territory in the cloud.

I am NOT good at map-reading, famously so, despite my long experience in the hills. I am 88 years old and need to start off earlier than my ‘guided’ party. I need to summit Great G. by noon on the 8th June to send messages to the RGS in London at that time.

How can I be sure of the route, without an experienced guide?

I am not sure which routes the rest of your party is taking so difficult to answer accurately! However the paths are all clear but the question is choosing the correct one. My favoured route heads towards Fleetwith Pike on the wide track before turning south at the quarry. It then climbs gradually until half way to Great Gable where it veers left and climbs steeper to the col before Green Gable and on to Great. An alternative is to climb south to Great Knotts from Honister slate mine at the start of the walk. The path is again good and just keep heading south over Great Knotts, Brandreth and Green Gable to Great. If the weather is bad/cloudy it is easy to miss people though if you have not the route planned and agreed with the others.

From meeting on the cricket pitch to recording their debut album with the help of Matt Corby, Great Gable are not a band to do things in the standard way. Never ones to worry about industry hype, they have spent the past few years focused on one thing only – getting their music heard by their fans.

The band have quietly been selling out multiple national and international tours and amassing millions of online streams for their music, building themselves a die-hard fan base that has stuck with them every step of the way. They’re back on the road in 2022, hitting up a bunch of their favourite spots across Australia & New Zealand. The tour follows the release of their fresh new single Hazy, produced by Alex Henriksson & Matt Corby at Rainbow Valley in Byron Bay.

Route Description for The Great Gable Round

Walking the Great Gable Round can be a bit of a daunting experience due to the rugged and steep terrain leading up to the summit, but if you are well prepared, you will be rewarded with some amazing views. Make sure to wear sturdy walking boots and plenty of layers to stay comfortable on the exposed trail.

The trail follows closely along several winding waterways, before beginning the steep climb up to the viewpoint atop Great Gable. Although it may be a bit of a challenge, once you reach the summit you will have some truly spectacular views overlooking the surrounding Lake District landscape. To the southwest, you will have a great view of Wast Water far below, and in every other direction you will be able to spot countless peaks sprawled out before you. This is an amazing Lake District walk that should certainly make it onto your list.

Setting out from the Seathwaite car park, follow the path to the right to skirt around the edge of the Seathwaite Farm Campsite and pass through a gate to cross over Grains Gill. Head through the next gate and take the left path at the fork, making an immediate left to follow along the stream to the south. From here, continue along the path for 1.2 km , as you walk at the foot of the steep slopes of Base Brown on your right.

Meeting up with Styhead Gill, continue along the trail as it turns to the west and begins to climb sharply uphill along the stream. Keep straight for 1.6 km , passing by the rushing waters of Taylorgill Force, before coming to the edge of Styhead Tarn. This charming body of water sits nestled safely in the valley, with the imposing peaks of Great Gable and Green Gable to the west, with Seathwaite Fell and Great Slack to the east.

Continue southwest along the trail for 0.5 km , where you will arrive at a junction next to a mountain rescue supply hut. Turn right here to begin the steep slog uphill to the summit of Great Gable. As you work your way up the rugged and rocky terrain, you will gain a great perspective of the surrounding mountains that make this area so wild and beautiful.

Once you have reached the viewpoint atop Great Gable, you will have a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape that includes Wast Water to the southwest and a whole host of rugged peaks, the highest of which are Scafell Pike ( 978 m ) and Great End ( 910 m ) to the south. After taking in the amazing views, carefully descend along the same trail that you came in on and make your way back past Styhead Tarn to arrive at a fork.

If you want to retrace your steps back to the trailhead, take the path to the left. If you are looking for a change of scenery on the return journey, head to the right and cross the bridge over Styhead Gill. From here, make your way northeast at the foot of Seathwaite Fell and follow closely along the edge of the water for 1.1 km , where you will once again have a scenic view overlooking Taylorgill Force.

Here, the trail will turn east and pass through a gate before arriving at a junction. Keep straight and pass through another gate that will bring you to a bridge over Grains Gill. After crossing over the bridge, the trail will turn to the north and follow closely along the rushing water. Enjoy the final views of the rugged landscape, as you walk the final 1.2 km back to Seathwaite. After wrapping up the Great Gable Round, make sure to pop into the cafe for some refreshments before heading home.

Trail Highlights

Great Gable

One of the most popular of the Lake District Fells, Great Gable features many different routes to the summit viewpoint that allow walkers to fully explore the rugged slopes of the mountain. Although the peak appears to be dome-shaped from almost every direction, when viewed from Wasdale it has the appearance of a pyramid, giving the mountain its name.

What Is a Gable Roof? 8 Styles to Know

Learn the pros and cons of a gable roof, plus how it compares to other popular roof styles.

Getty Images / 1000ways

A gable roof is a popular roof design that is used with most architectural styles . Not only are gable roofs beautiful, but they're easier to construct than other roof styles , such as hip roofs, mansard roofs, and gambrel roofs. Plus, the simple design sheds water easily and provides more attic space than most other roof styles. Below, we've explained what a gable roof is, defined popular types of gable roofs, and discussed the pros and cons of gable roofs, so you can decide what roof style is best for your home.

What Is a Gable Roof?

A gable roof is a roof style consisting of one horizontal ridge and two slopes that form a triangular shape. Because gable roofs are very simple, they're often accompanied by dormers , which rise vertically from the roof slopes to create more living space and architectural interest.

Variations of Gable Roofs

Within the larger genre of gable roofs are numerous variations. Some methods are commonly used across many home designs, while others are reserved for specific architectural styles.

Here are some popular types of gable roofs:

  • Open Gable: The open gable is a standard gable roof consisting of two slopes meeting at one ridge to form a triangular roof. The gable's end is left open and the wall fills the space between the slopes.
  • Box Gable: On a box gable, the gable's end is closed and the wall stops below the start of the gable. The finished triangular section gives the roof a more finished look.
  • Front Gable: A front gable is a standard gable roof that jets out at the front entrance of the home.
  • Gambrel: While often designated as a separate roof style altogether, a gambrel roof is technically a variation of a gable roof in which the sloping sides are broken into two pieces with different pitches.
  • Saltbox Gable: A saltbox gable is one with an off-center peak, resulting in two slopes with differing lengths. The slopes can be the same pitch, which allows them to reach different wall levels by spanning different distances, or different pitches, which allows them to reach the same wall level over different distances.
  • Dutch Gable: A Dutch gable is a hybrid roof style combining features of a hip roof and a gable roof. The lower portion of the roof is a hip roof and the upper portion is a gable roof.
  • Shed Gable: A shed gable is often called a skillion or a lean-to. This design is defined by a single roof slope that's often standalone but can be attached to a building or another roof surface.
  • Jerkinhead: A jerkinhead roof is a gable roof with a hipped portion near the peak. This hybrid style creates a unique aesthetic while offering a significant level of wind resistance over a standard gable roof.

Gable Roof: Pros and Cons

Gable roofs are undoubtedly the most popular style of roof in America. The reason for this? Gable roofs have many more advantages than disadvantages. Here are some pros and cons of gable roofs.

Pro: Attic Space

When compared to a hip roof, another popular roof style, gable roofs create far more usable attic space.

Looking to create livable space in your attic? Consider a gambrel roof. This variation of a gable roof creates even more usable attic space, as the lower portion of the slope features a steeper pitch. This steeper framing makes the lower portion more vertical like a wall.

Pro: Easy to Build

A simple gable roof is the easiest type of roof to build, as it has a very simplistic frame.

Pro: Rain and Snow Resistance

A gable roof's simple two-slope design allows it to easily shed rain and snow, assuming the roof has the appropriate pitch for the given location. This is because gable roof design lacks an excess of ridges and valleys, which may create potential leak points.

Con: Poor Wind Resistance

While gable roofs are plenty strong, they aren't always the best pick for areas that see high winds or hurricanes. Hip roofs have superior wind resistance thanks to their aerodynamic design and strong frame design.

If you love the look of a gable roof but need more wind resistance, consider a hybrid roof option like a jerkinhead, which utilizes a small hipped portion near the top of the gable to increase the strength and wind resistance.

Pro: Design Possibilities

Gable roofs aren't limited in their design potential, making them popular choices for many architectural styles, from Bungalows to Colonials to Greek Revivals. On the other hand, hip roofs, gambrel roofs, mansard roofs, and other common roof styles tend to heavily alter a home's overall look.

Pro: Ventilation

The horizontal gable at the end of a gable roof creates an ideal spot for an attic vent. This is preferable, as gable vents are some of the best ways to vent an attic, over other options like ridge vents, roof turbines, and soffit vents.

Sunday Story-Lines: Travelers Championship set to culminate in big name shootout

Draws and Fades

Change Text Size

Cream has risen to the top at TPC River Highlands as a host of big names are set for a Sunday showdown for the final Signature Event of the season at the Travelers Championship.

Early pace-setter Tom Kim continued to play great golf and adds the 54-hole lead to his 18 and 36-hole leads this week. It was +900 for a wire-to-wire winner this week via DraftKings at the start of the tournament and Kim might have a few bettors hoping he keeps the pedal down one more day.

Kim fired a 5-under 65 to move to 18-under for the week, alone at the top of the leaderboard and one ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia.

A late blitz from World No. 1 Scheffler, which saw four consecutive birdies to finish his round of 64, has the Texan eyeing off a sixth win of the season as the betting favorite with a round to go.

Scheffler is now +150 to be the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to notch up six wins in a PGA TOUR season.

Bhatia birdied the final two holes to also post a 64 on Saturday, giving the pre-tournament longshot a real chance at a third TOUR win.

PGA Champion Xander Schauffele surged into the lead with three birdies in a row in the middle of the back nine before cooling off. A last-hole bogey could prove pivotal as it dropped him to 16-under and two back.

He’s joined at 16-under by Sungjae Im while Collin Morikawa is sixth at 15-under.

Here is a quick look at the latest odds and storylines heading to Sunday with my draws and fades below.

  • +150: Scottie Scheffler (-17, T2) – With a win the World No. 1 would make it six on the season and 12 in his career. Last player to have six or more wins in a TOUR season was Tiger Woods (6) in 2009.
  • +333: Tom Kim (-18, 1st) – Led after 18, 36 and now 54 holes. Three-time TOUR winner turned 22 this week and looking to be the first South Korean to win the Travelers Championship. Sits 61st in FedExCup looking to secure Playoffs this week.
  • +550: Xander Schauffele (-16, T4) – Chasing ninth PGA TOUR win, and second this season after his PGA Championship victory. Was Travelers champion in 2022 and leads the field in SG: Putting.
  • +700: Akshay Bhatia (-17, T2) – An 80/1 longshot pre-tournament showing he belongs. Seeking a third TOUR win, a second this season after winning the Valero Texas Open.
  • +1200: Sungjae Im (-16, T4) – Like Tom Kim, looking to be the first Korean to win the Travelers. Two-time TOUR winner but not since the 2021 Shriners Children’s Open. Second this week in Par 4 Scoring.
  • +1400: Collin Morikawa (-15, 6th) – Hunting TOUR win No. 7, a first since the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP last October. His last eight starts all top-25s including four top-4s.
  • +4000: Tony Finau (-14, T7) – Hoping for lucky TOUR win no. 7 on Sunday, Finau leads the field in Par 5 Scoring and Sand Saves.
  • +5000: Justin Thomas (-14, T7) – Last of his 15 TOUR wins came at the 2022 PGA Championship, over two years ago. Tied the hottest player on the Back 9 this week and leads Driving Distance.
  • +6600: Shane Lowry (-14, T7) – Former Open Champion won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Rory McIlroy but now chases a solo win. Third in SG: Tee-to-Green, fourth SG: Approach and fourth SG: Around the Green this week
  • +8000: Patrick Cantlay (-13, T10) – Shot 60 as an amateur at TPC River Highlands and might need to do so again to get ninth TOUR win and first since 2022 BMW Championship.
  • +10000: Cameron Young (-13, T10) – Rocketed into contention after an 11-under 59 in the third round. Just the 12th golfer to shoot sub-60 on the PGA TOUR. Still pining for a maiden TOUR win.

Xander Schauffele +550

Call me crazy but I am going back to the well on the man I picked pre-tournament and again after the second round. While his final hole bogey was far from a huge confidence booster and puts him behind Scheffler instead of on level pegging with him, it might be just the kick in the backside Schauffele needs. He thrives on people discounting him and his recent PGA Championship victory expelled any personal doubts. Schauffele is the value on the board as a former champion at TPC River Highlands AND as the leader in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Akshay Bhatia, Sungjae Im, Collin Morikawa are all value bets in this situation also if you don’t love Schauffele. The fact Scheffler is in the final group has inflated the odds of others and given you a chance to take a calculated risk in a birdie fest. I’ve liked Bhatia all week and expect he can hold a place in the top five, Im has come from the clouds with an all-around game this week and Morikawa has been in exceptional form of late without winning. My lone concern with Morikawa is he will need to make all his putts on Sunday to make up his deficit. Remember also, six of the last eight champions here have come from the final group on Sunday. That puts another check in the Bhatia column.

Scottie Scheffler +150

Do I think Scheffler can’t win the Travelers Championship
of course not. He is the favorite for a reason and his finish of four straight birdies after a bogey was befitting of the best player in the world on Saturday. But I don’t like +150 in a shootout where putting will be the key down the stretch. If Schauffele, or someone else, can set a pace early and place the pressure on the greens for the final group then the odds become dangerous around Scheffler. Yes, you’re getting plus money when you might normally get negative odds, but it just feels like a trap play. I’ll eat my words, like I have many times with Scheffler before, if he pulls ahead and wins easily, but at the end of the day I’m trying to protect the bettors out there!
